Ah, you didnt watch S7? You are a true believer then! I cant really think of one ep that has been really really good in S7, unfortunately. The finale is the exception maybe.
Poor Willow. Everyone still thinks she did do the spell. She is supposed to be the weakest one and she was the only one who could withstand temptation. They have a lot to apologize for when all of this is over.
"I guess those monks messed up when they made her the Slayers sister. I mean even I can see the dangers of making something as valuable as the key related to someone who's constantly fighting the forces of darkness."

See, I always wondered... why didnt they make Dawn a pencil sharpener or a cute puppy? :p
“I know what you want. I can kill her for you.”

Oh-oh...
Such a quick update! You are like Speedy Gonzales!

WillowRulez: My #1 Fan :)

Poor Willow. Everyone still thinks she did do the spell. She is supposed to be the weakest one and she was the only one who could withstand temptation.

It is ironic that everyone thinks she's a danger with her magic when she was the only one to resist Catherine's manipulation.

See, I always wondered... why didnt they make Dawn a pencil sharpener or a cute puppy?

Or perhaps a piece of dryer lint, as suggested in AntigoneUnbounds brilliant Gods Served and Abandoned.

Oh-oh...

I see your Oh-oh and raise you a :paranoid

She's back

D minus 9 days

Tara paused outside the Magic Box to steady herself. As much as she knew that what Giles and Buffy had down to Willow hadn't been their fault, she still felt some anger towards them. Pushing these feelings aside she went into the shop.

“Ah Tara.” Giles took the small wooden box from below the counter and tapped the lid nervously. “So I did some tests on the necklace. It is permeated with dark magic.”

Tara nodded, given the way Willow had reacted, that wasn't surprising. “Targeted at Willow?”

“No. Actually it seems to have been... targeted at your mother.”

Tara paled. The thought that someone might have been using dark magic against her mother had never occurred to her. “What does it do?”

“Well, I...” Giles hesitated.

“Please, I need to know.”

“I believe that prolonged exposure would make a person ill, and eventually kill them.”

Tara took a moment to digest this. “So it was this necklace that made my mother sick.”

“Yes, I believe so.”

“Do you think my father knew it would do that?”

“Honestly I don't know. After your recent adventure I wouldn't put anything past him.”

Tara wondered if this was right. After all he had tried to kill her. Tara shook her head as she realised the problem with this. “No, even if he had wanted mom dead, and being willing to kill her he wouldn't have used something magical to do it.”

“Yes, you're right. Given his distaste of magic he would have most likely used more mundane means.”

“So that leaves us with the question of who's behind it and why did it affect Willow so strongly?”

“As to the second I believe that it's because of her high level of connection to the magical forces. This made her more susceptible to the magic within the necklace.”

“What are you going to do with it?”

“I have some friends who can dispose of it, if you like.”

“Yes, please. I want it destroyed.” Tara was silent awhile before saying, “When we were in Carolfield, the creature there said something about a darkness eating away at the town. Willow saw that symbol at a couple of places. So maybe it's connected to the darkness.”

Giles nodded, but remained silent. He had an idea where Tara was heading but didn't want to interrupt her chain of thought.

“It also said my mother was immune, so maybe it killed her. Killed her because it couldn't control her.”

“That is possible. Though why did it kill Mrs Madison?”

“I... I don't know.”

“Well, we'll look into this,” Giles assured.

Tara nodded. “I need to get going.”

As Tara walked to the door, Giles said, “I really am sorry Tara.”

“It wasn't your fault; we were all being played.”

Giles didn't look as though he accepted that. “I know, but somehow I feel I should have known.”

***

Giles noticed Tara stop outside the shop to talk to someone. A short while later that person came in. Seeing it was Buffy Giles explained to her what they had learnt.

“Tara's mother wasn't the only one who was immune,” Buffy pointed out, once he'd finished.

“No, that's right. Tara is as well.”

“So maybe it has plans for Tara...”

“And Mrs Madison was interfering with them somehow. But if that is the case...”

“Then we need to keep an eye on Tara,” Buffy said in a firm voice. “Whatever this thing is, it's not getting anywhere near her.”

***

When Tara got home she made some lunch while Willow sat staring into space. Her eyes were moving about as though she was watching something flying about in front of her.

She sat down opposite Willow. "So I was thinking that we could go to The Magic Box today. Look for ways to reverse the spell." Willow didn't answer. She reached out and took Willows hand. "Give me something, give me some hope." Willow didn't answer, but she squeezed Tara's hand slightly.

Summary: Tara tries to find a cure for Willow, meanwhile The Great One makes his first move.

Where there's a Willow, there's a way-oh

D minus 5 days

Quentin Travers sat in a large, darkly furnished office. For the last few weeks he had been doing a review of the Council's procedures and was now writing a report on his findings. He was also including recommendations on improving the training of Potentials. Buffy's rebellion against Council control and, worse yet, Faith's fall to a life of crime, were great embarrassments to him. He wanted to ensure it never happened again. The room was silent save for the scratching of his pen and the ticking of an old grandmother clock.

He looked up from the report at a knock at his door. A moment later an assistant came in. “Sir there's a man here to see you.”

Travers looked down; he needed to get this report finished. “Tell him I'm busy.”

“He says his name is Ethan Rayne.”

Travers' head shot up. “Is that so?” He smiled in a way that made the assistant take a step back. “Then let him in.”

As he entered Ethan smirked in his normal, annoying way. “Quentin, you're looking as well as ever.”

“Ethan. Please tell me why I shouldn't have you bound and cast down our deepest dungeon?”

Ethan sat down, not seeming at all upset by the threat. “Because of this.” Ethan took a disc out of his pocket and, placing it on his hand, he held it towards Travers. A beam of light went up out of it, creating an image of an eye within a circle, floating a short way above the disc.

Quentin gasped. He knew what the symbol meant but he'd never expected to actually see it. He recovered himself and then asked, “So who did you steal that from?”

“Now come on Quentin, you know as well as I do that one of these would only work for the person it was given to. No one does biometrics like the Powers.”

“I cannot fathom why they would send you.”

“Me neither. However the fact remains that they did. I have a short message. There are important events brewing in Sunnydale.”

“I know; our seers saw some of it. We are researching it.”

“The powers want you to stay out of it.”

“What?”

“It is none of your concern.”

“What about the Slayer?”

“They would ask you to tell her to stay out of it, but they know that wouldn't do any good. They're well aware of your failure to control the Slayer.”

Travers gulped at this. When he had taken over the council his predecessor had explained to him how it had been the Powers who had set up the council in order to control the slayer. To stop her rocking the boat, was the phrase he had used. It had been at that time he head learned of the mark used by the Powers and their minions.

Tavers composed himself, then asked, “Is that all?”

“So you'll comply?”

“Of course I will. It's not like I have much choice.”

“Good. Well I won't keep you.”

***

That evening Ethan was sitting in his room, still enjoying the memory of how he'd gotten to Travers. He was broken from his thoughts by the phone ringing. He answered it, saying, “What is it?”

“I've got the information you wanted.”

“You've found out who it was who called me?” A month ago Ethan had received a call from someone saying they represented the Powers That Be, saying they had a job for him. Intrigued by the call, Ethan had been trying to find out who they were.

“Yeah, it was from a law firm. Wait a minute I've got the name written down. Here it is, Wolfram and Hart.”

“Sorry mate, I think it must be a bad line. Could you repeat that?”

“Wolfram and Hart.”

Hanging up, Ethan said to himself, “Well isn't that a turn up for the books.” He wondered why those two would be working together. As he sat back down on his bed Ethan noticed something in the corner of his eye, but when he turned towards it, it disappeared. “Ah,” he said, as it occurred to him that maybe he should have resisted his natural curiosity this time.

***

Tara sat at the desk in her and Willow's bedroom, while Willow was lying on the bed napping. There were a couple of books piled precariously on the desk and several more piles around her on the floor. She was going over the list of the symptoms Willow had been experiencing, which included: lack of focus, drowsiness, withdrawn, memory loss, loss of appetite, NOT WILLOW.

Putting the notebook down Tara reached for one of the books on the desk. In doing so she upset the pile it was in and had to quickly grab the pile in order to stop it toppling over. She then pulled the book out carefully, making sure not to disturb the other books.

After reading through it for a few minutes Tara gave a frustrated grunt. There was nothing in it that helped her. She started to put it away, but then stopped and hurled the book against the far wall. It hit the wall, then slid down to the floor with several of the pages bending.

“What is the point of having all this power if I can't even help the woman I love?”

Tara glared at the book for a moment as she tried to calm herself, and then stood up to retrieve it. While she was doing so there was a light tapping at the door. “Tara, can I come in?” Dawn asked.

“Of course Dawn.”

Dawn opened the door, looking worried. “Tara are you okay?”

“Yes Dawn. I was just getting a little frustrated.”

“Maybe you need a break. There's a new series of American Idol. What could be better than people making fools of themselves trying to sing?”

Tara looked up. “What did you just say?”

“Uh, people making fools of themselves singing?” Dawn looked worried. “Is something wrong?”

“I think I just had an idea, or maybe just the hint of an idea.” Tara shook her head, not sure what she meant.

“You mean to help Willow?”

“I think so.”

Dawn glanced over at where Willow was sleeping. “It's just a pity we haven't been able to work out exactly what's wrong with her.”

Tara stepped forward and hugged Dawn. “That's it! Dawn, you're brilliant.” Moving to the door she went on, “I better start making some arrangements. Thank you, Dawn.”

Dawn watched Tara leave with a confused expression. “Uh, you're welcome?”

***

Buffy walked through one of Sunnydale's many cemeteries, as she said to herself, “Well I'll just check this one over, then I'll return home.” Checking the new graves for signs they'd been disturbed, she went on, “There doesn't seem to much going on, which probably means something nasty's about to come after me.”

“Guardian, you have a a knack for understatement.”

Spinning around Buffy saw a man, wearing a dark suit standing behind her. “And who might you be?”

“I am known by many names, Guardian. Most of my followers call me the Great One.”

“Not another one,” She muttered. “And what's with this Guardian? I'm known as the Slayer.”

“Soon you will be known as Dead.”

One moment he was standing several meters away from her, the next he was next to her. A moment later Buffy was flying backward through the air. She smashed into a gravestone. Ignoring the pain in her back Buffy scrambled to her feet only to find herself flying through the air again.

Getting to her feet again she saw that the Great One had drawn a sword and was running toward her. Buffy was only just able to duck out of the way of the swing; the sword passing millimetres away from her neck.

As Buffy struggled to remain conscious, the Great One stopped to study her. After some time he put his sword away.

“What,” Buffy said. “Giving up already?”

“You're not her Guardian.”

“I told you, I'm the Slayer.”

“This has been a waste of time.” With that he disappeared.

“Yeah well it hasn't been a riot for me either.” Not seeing anyone else around, Buffy turned and staggered off home.

***

Seeing Buffy come in, and the state of her, Tara rushed over to her, saying, “You're hurt.”

“Yeah, I met the latest big bad, I guess. Called himself the Great One.”

“Another one? Are you okay?”

“I will be. I just need to rest a bit.” Sitting, Buffy said, “So why were you waiting up? Shouldn't you be looking after Willow?”

“Earlier Dawn gave me an idea. How to help Willow. Well, a way to find out how to help her.”

“Go on.”

“There's a demon.”

“Demon?”

“He's a friend of Angel's. Called Lorne.”

“Oh you mean the green guy. Who can read people's destinies.” As Tara nodded Buffy went on, “You want to take Willow to him.”

“At the moment, we don't know what's wrong with Willow, not exactly. If we can find out then it'll help us find a cure.”

“So we won't be researching blind anymore.”

“That's it.”

“It'll mean going to LA.”

“I know, and I know you can't leave with a new big bad just appearing.”

“You can't go to LA on your own.”

“I'm not. Willow will be coming with me, and Amy said she'd come as well.”

“Amy? Are you sure you can trust her?”

“Yes. I know she's made mistakes, but she's trying to help.”

“Okay then, when will you be going?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Where there's a Willow, there's a way-oh

D minus 4 days

Tara lowered the sun visor as the sun came up over the horizon. She had set off early, wanting to reach LA as soon as possible. Amy was sleeping in the seat next to her, her head tilted back, while Willow was in the back, gazing out the window. Every so often Tara glanced back to make sure that Willow okay.

“Are we almost there?” Amy asked.

“We've another hour to go Will-- Amy.” Wanting to cover up her mistake Tara quickly went on, “How was your nap?”

“Pretty good. I'm sorry I can't help with the driving but the whole spending a few years as a rat thing got in the way of getting my license.”

“I can imagine it would.”

They both sat in silence a while, before Amy said, “You'd think we'd have a lot to talk about given how much we have in common.”

“We do?”

“Well we're both witches, and we've both had a parent try to kill us.”

“What about your father? Have you heard anything from him lately?”

“He doesn't want anything to do with me. He says I'm too much like my mother.”

“I guess that's something else that we've got in common then.”

Amy glanced back at Willow. “I really am sorry about what happened.”

“It wasn't your fault. I mean your mother was as much out to get you as she was us.”

“I didn't mean...” Amy paused as she considered what she had meant. “I guess I meant I'm sorry about taking Willow to Rack.”

“Why did you?”

“I don't know. She was really into magic, and I thought if I took her to see this uber magic guy, then she'd think I was cool and like me.” Amy shrugged. “Seems kind of silly now.”

“The whole wanting to fit in and be accepted thing? Yes, it kind of is, but it's a problem we all have.”

***

“Are we there yet?” Amy asked. “It seems like we've been driving round LA for hours.”

“It hasn't been that long. I'm just having trouble remembering exactly where Angel's hotel is. Willow drove us last time we were here.”

“Well we could always...”

“Here it is.” Tara indicated a tall building by the side of the road before driving to the car park behind it.

They went round to the front of the building to find the foyer deserted,

“Do they know we're coming?” Amy asked as she looked around the entrance foyer.

Tara put her arm around Willow, guiding her into the hotel. “No one was in when I phoned so I left a message.” She wondered if coming here had been a mistake. Once she had had the idea of taking Willow to Lorne, she had wanted to do it as soon as possible. Her only focus being getting Willow better. Now it occurred to her that they might have problems of their own. They probably wouldn't appreciate her just turning up in the middle of a crisis. Tara was just starting to consider leaving and finding somewhere to stay when the door to the office opened.

Cordelia came out of the office, looking at what seemed to be a set of brochures. Without looking up she started to say, “Angel Investigations, we help the...” Cordelia stopped as she saw who had come in. “Tara.”

Tara just stared at Cordelia, not saying anything.

Cordelia studied the small group. “So what's up? Don't tell me she's died again.”

“It was you,” Tara said, not seeming to have heard the question. “I mean that I saw in the Summer Land.”

Cordelia looked faintly embarrassed. “Oh, right. I was hoping you wouldn't remember that.”

“What happened? Why were you there? How did you get back here?”

“Uh, I kind of ascended and things didn't really work out. Let's leave it at that. So you haven't told me what's up.”

“I'm here about Willow.”

Cordelia turned to the other woman wondering what the problem was. “Oh hey Willow.”

“Hello Cordelia.” Willow's voice was flat and lifeless.

“Hey don't overdo the enthusiasm.”

“That's what I'm here about. Willow's been bound. I was hoping that if Lorne read her he might be able to give us a better idea of what's wrong.”

“Bad news,” Cordelia said as she shook her head. “Lorne's left. Gone up to Las Vegas.”

“Oh. Are you the only one here?”

“Well Angel's visiting the psycho.”

“Psycho?” It took Tara a moment to figure out who Cordelia meant. “Oh, you mean Faith.”

“Fred and Gunn are off on a date and Wesley is at home sulking.” Cordelia studied Tara for a moment. “You're going to Vegas, aren't you?”

“He's the only way I can think of to help Willow.”

“Well I'll find out his...” Cordelia stopped as the doors were flung open and a green skinned demon stormed in.

“No one talk to me about Vegas,” Lorne said as he stormed past them all, not seeming to notice the new arrivals.

“Or maybe not,” Cordelia finished.

***

Once Cordelia had explained the situation to him, Lorne readily agreed to give Willow a reading. Cordelia locked up the main doors and they all went through to the office.

“Willow I need you to sing something,” Lorne said.

“Sing?” Willow didn't look as if she understood. She just stared at Lorne with a wide eyed expression.

“Willow, why don't you sing the dreydl song,” Tara suggested.

Willow nodded then started singing:

I have a little dreydl
I made it our of clay
And when it's dry and ready
Then dreydl I shall play.

“That's it,” Lorne said. He sat still, looking thoughtful.

Tara waited for a moment and then asked, “Do you know what's wrong with her?”

“I have an idea, but I'm not seeing the whole picture.”

“Do you need her to sing something else?”

Lorne turned to Tara and said, “Actually I need you to sing.”

“Me?”

“It would help.”

“Um, okay.” Tara thought for a moment then sang:

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

“Did that help?” Tara asked.

“Yes it did. You know that you and Willow are soul mates?”

“Well I hoped.”

“More than that, your essences have become merged to a degree.”

“Because of Glory, but what's wrong with Willow?”

“Her essence has been split in two. The part of her that could do magic has been locked away, hidden. That's also the part that can feel.”

“So to heal her...”

“You have to reunite the two parts of her essence.”

Tara nodded. “Thank you.”

“There's something else. I couldn't help notice you have a couple of holes in your memory.”

“I know.”

“Well Cordelia can help you with those.”

Cordelia stepped forward. “Of course I can. Hold out your hands.” Tara did so and Cordelia took hold of them. As she held Tara's hands she began to glow softly.

“What do you want me to do? Sit silently and say nothing?”

“Well it would help

“Willow if you don't give up your magic then I'm leaving you.”

“You didn't answer my question. What does it feel like knowing you're putting your friends in danger.”

“Goddess,” Tara moaned as her memories came flooding back.

“Are you okay?” Amy asked, approaching her.

“I... I just need to collect my thoughts.”

“We'll give you a moment alone,” Cordelia said.

As they were leaving Amy said, “Uh, Mr Lorne. I was wondering if you could...”

“You'd like me to give you a reading?”

Amy nodded.

“Certainly.”

Once they'd gone Tara thought about the things she now remembered. The argument with Willow surprised her. She had known it must have been bad, otherwise Willow wouldn't have made her forget it. Yet something, about the way Willow had spoken to her shocked her.

Her main concern was the later memories. The fact that they hadn't killed the Great One. Then it hit her. If that's the memory that had been taken, it can't have been Willow who did it. Thinking about what had happened, the timing, there was one unmistakable conclusion. It must have been Catherine who had done it. A part of Tara blamed Giles and Buffy for what had happened. Yet now it seemed she had to shoulder some of the blame. if she hadn't jumped to the conclusion that Willow had cast the spell on her, then they wouldn't have bound her.

Turning to Willow, Tara said, “Oh Willow, I'm so sorry.”

***

That evening Tara phoned Buffy. “So was he able to help?” Buffy asked.

“Yes, I've got a better idea of what's wrong with Willow now.”

“So when are you coming back?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Good.”

“Buffy, they were able to restore my memory. There's something I need to tell you. The monster you fought last night. I think that was what those monks summoned.”

“But what about the Great One? The other one.”

“That was just a decoy. At least that's what Catherine Madison told me.”

“Oh and she's so reliable.”

“I think she was telling me the truth.”

“Okay we'll look into it. Why did Willow want to make you... she didn't cast the spell on you, was it?”

“No, it was Catherine.”

“But that means...”

“I know.”

“We really misjudged her.”

“I know.”

“Well once we've cured to Willow we can work on making it up to her. For now you concentrate on looking after Willow.”

“I will.”

***

Going to her room, Tara met up with Amy going down the hallway. “Hey,” Amy said. “So did that Lorne guy help at all? It all seemed kind of vague to me.”

“I think so. It gave me some ideas which I can look into. The main thing is, I know where to start looking. What about you? Was he able to help you?”

“I guess. Like I said, he was kind of vague.”

“Well if you want to talk about it, then you know where I am.”

“Thanks. Well goodnight.”

“Night.”

***

As she got ready for bed Tara thought about what she had to do. If Willow's essence was split then she needed a way to find the other half. The easiest way would be to visit the nether realm. She would need an anchor for that though. Amy could do that, but Tara could remember how intense the spell was, how it had affected Willow. That wasn't something she wanted to share with Amy, or anyone apart from Willow.

Tara was still thinking about this as she went to bed. “Where there's a will there's a way. Or where there's a Willow there's a way-oh.”

***

As she was led into the meeting room Faith went to sit down without looking at the young man sitting at the table. After a moment he said, “I hear you had a visit today.”

“Yeah, Angel did his monthly check up. You know I really hate lying to him.”

The man looked up at her. “Well then, maybe you should tell him the truth.”

Faith brightened up a little. “Really?”

“No Faith. You cannot tell Angel the truth. The less people who know you're working for the government the better.”

Faith snorted. “So, is this just a social call or what?”

“I have a job for you. One of your old haunts: Sunnydale.”

“Well if there's something bad up there, Buffy and her group are probably already working on it. Maybe I can...”

“I don't think it would be wise to have any contact with them.” He passed Faith a file.

Faith opened it up and read the name. She reread it. She Looked up at the man and then said, “Is this a joke?”

“Now Faith you know I don't joke. Is there a problem?”

“I don't get it. Why her?”

“You know they don't tell me why a target has to be eliminated, just that they do. These orders came direct from the Pentagon.”

“Shit.”

“I will arrange transport for you. Call me once you're in Sunnydale and once you've done the job.”

The man got up and left the room leaving Faith staring at the paper in front of her. She kept hoping that if she read it enough times the name would change. But it kept saying the same thing: Tara Maclay.

Yay, another update!
Neat way to give Tara her memories back and to let her find out the truth about the last 'forget' spell.
Wow, it's getting more angsty again! Faith as an assassin... what has Tara done to deserve this? (Well I have my theories.)

Glad you liked it

Wow, it's getting more angsty again!

And there's more angst to come :paranoid

Faith as an assassin

I thought this version of Faith would be different from the others people have written.

what has Tara done to deserve this?

My theory is she's got too many unpaid parking tickets :spin they're really starting to crack down on that sort of thing.

Where there's a Willow, there's a way-oh

D minus 3 days

Tara looked at the candles she had just positioned with a critical eye. She moved one slightly then gave a small nod of approval. She got a small sheet of paper from her pocket and went over the list on it. She had had a restless night, filled with strange dreams which she couldn't remember now. However, she had woken up this morning knowing a way to help Willow. Even though it was still early and everyone else was still asleep, she had wanted to get started right away. She had borrowed the necessary supplies and started getting everything set up.

Once the various circles had been drawn and the candles put in place, Tara went to get Willow. Leading her into the centre of the circle, Tara said, “Stay here sweetie.” She then started lighting the candles. Once that was done, she went to stand in front of Willow and took her hands. She closed her eyes and started chanting.

Tara opened her eyes to find herself surrounded by a confusion of colours. She tried to figure out where she was, but when she tried to focus on anything she began to feel dizzy. Then, as she began to adjust, the dizziness passed and her surroundings began to grow clearer, revealing her to be in a forest.

'Why am I here?' She thought to herself. She began pushing through the trees, the branches whipping at her face. Just as she was starting to think she might never get through, Tara stepped into a clearing. There was a small stone cottage in the middle of the clearing. It looked like something she would expect to see in a cross stitch mural. A squat building with neatly trimmed lawns and smoke coming from the chimney. Tara walked gingerly up to it and knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

Opening the door Tara found two old women sitting there. One, a plump, pleasant-faced woman, was knitting, while the other, a narrow faced, stern-looking woman, was reading a large book.

The second woman took her reading glasses off and then studied Tara for a moment. “What can we do for you?”

“Uh...” Tara stammered.

“Well? Spit it out.”

“Now, Lillith be nice,” the other woman said.

“Eve, I'm not as young as I used to be. I don't have time to listen to these youngsters stammering and fidgeting.”

“She's probably lost something. Haven't you dear?”

“Yes, but I don't know what.” Tara looked at the two women, hoping they could help her.

“I know just what it is,” Eve put her knitting aside, got up and then went to look in a cupboard. “It was your cat, Miss Kitty, wasn't it?”

“Yes,” Tara said as her face lit up. “Have you found her?”

“Here she is, as good as new.” The woman came over to Tara and handed her a toy kitten.

Tara hugged the cat tight to her chest. “Oh Miss Kitty I thought that I'd lost you forever.”

Suddenly the toy cat came to life. She began squirming in Tara's hands. When she had managed to get loose she ran for the door.

Eve, who had already resumed her knitting, smiled at Tara. “You'd better hurry dear, don't want to lose her again.”

“No.” Tara ran out after Miss Kitty.

She found Miss Kitty standing under a tree. She was stroking herself up against the tree trunk and purring happily.

“What kind of tree have you got here, Miss Kitty?” As she got closer she knew the answer. “It's a Willow tree isn't it?” Looking up at it she sang to herself, Lost in ecstasy spread beneath my Willow tree. “Willow! I have to find Willow. Come on Miss Kitty.”

Miss Kitty gave a small mew and then started to trot away.

“You know where she is, don't you?”

After following Miss Kitty a while Tara found herself standing in front of what seemed to be a theme park ride. “Okay, this is getting weird. Weirder.” She read the sign over the entrance. “The Triple Goddess. Is Willow in there?” She started toward the entrance.

“Wait!” a voice called. “Wait!”

Tara turned and saw a dark skinned, young woman running toward her. As the woman got closer, Tara saw she was wearing a sparkling show man's suit and carrying a cane. When she had reached Tara she leant on the cane and tried to catch her breath.

“You can't go in yet. It isn't finished. It's not safe.”

“Oh.” Tara gazed at the entrance, wondering how she was going to help Willow if she was in there.

“Aww, don't look so sad.” She produced a pair of tickets from her pocket as she went on, “Here, have two free tickets. I promise that you and your girlfriend will be the first people to try the ride out.”

As she took the tickets she started, “How did you...”

“I think someone wants your attention.”

Tara Looked down and noticed Miss Kitty rubbing against her legs. “Do you want to get going?” she asked the cat. She Turned back to the woman and said, “Thank you for the tickets.” Tara then turned to follow Miss Kitty.

The woman watched Tara go, murmuring to herself, “What a nice girl. Now what do I need to do next?” She got a palm pilot out of her pocket and after pressing a couple of buttons, she said, “Oh yes, I need to call the painters.”

***

Tara caught up with Miss Kitty at the top of a dark, steep staircase. The steps were narrow and slippery and she didn't relish the idea of going down. After staring down the stairs a while, Tara said, “She's down there, isn't she?”

Miss Kitty just sat down and started licking her paw.

Tara took one of the torches that was on the wall and started down the stairs. She had to put her free hand against the wall to steady herself as she descended. After what seemed like hours, she reached a wooden door. There was a key hanging from a hook next to it. “Willow, are you in there?”

After a few moments, Willow's face appeared in the window in the door. “Tara what are you doing here?”

“I've come to get you out.”

Willow took a step back. “You can't. I was bad. I can't be trusted outside.”

“No, it was a trick. We were all tricked.”

“No, you can't do this.” Willow backed further away from the door.

“Willow, do you trust me?”

“Of course I do. With my life, with my heart and with my soul.”

“Then trust me when I say this is the right thing to do. You don't belong in here.”

Tara took the key off the hook and unlocked the door. A moment later, Willow came out. Then everything went black.

***

Tara opened her eyes to find Willow watching her, a small smile on her face. “Hey, you're back.” Willow said.

Smiling, Tara said, “I guess I'm not the only one.”

***

They were still a couple of miles away from home, when Tara pulled over to the side of the road.

“Is something wrong?” Willow asked.

“I just wanted to talk to you... about what happened. I'm really sorry I thought you'd used that spell on me again.”

“I wanted to,” Willow said in a quiet voice. “There was a voice in my head, telling me I'd lose you again if I didn't.”

“That was Catherine, trying to control you, but you were able to resist her. Which makes the fact I didn't trust you even worse.”

Willow looked down at her lap a moment, saying, “I am hurt you didn't trust me.” Turning back to Tara she went on, “But it's my fault that you didn't. I mean, if I hadn't betrayed you before then you'd have had no reason to suspect me.”

“Do you think you can forgive me?”

Instead of answering, Willow reached over and pulled Tara closed, kissing her gently on the lips. Willow kissed Tara for a few seconds then, as she pulled away, she said, “I already have.”

As Tara pulled out, Willow smirked slightly and said, “Buffy, on the other hand, is going to suffer.”

***

As she pulled in, in front of Buffy's house, Tara saw Buffy coming out the door.

Buffy waited till Tara was out of the car before saying, “Tara, we've been researching all morning and we've got a few leads.”

“Buffy, I should have phoned. You see...”

Tara was interrupted by Willow getting out of the car. “Hey Buffy.” Willow grinned.

“Hey, Will.” Buffy turned back to Tara and opened her mouth to speak. she stopped and turned back to Willow again with a confused look on her face. “Will?” Seeing the way Willow was smiling she said, “Hey Willow, you're better!” Buffy started towards her friends but then stopped and pouted. “You mean I did all that research for nothing.”

“Sorry Buffy,” Tara said, “I had an idea last night and once I cured Willow we wanted to get straight home.”

“I guess I'll let you off,” Buffy said as they moved to join her. They all started towards the house, but after a couple of steps Buffy stopped. “So where's Amy?”

Willow's eyes widened. “Oh no.”

Tara turned to Willow with a look of concern. “We didn't leave her in LA did we?”

Willow shook her head. “We must have done.” She shrugged. “Well I'm sure she'll find a way back.”

Buffy looked at her two friends with a shocked expression on her face. “You've got to be kidding.”

“Yes, we were,” Tara answered, smiling. “We dropped her off at her flat on the way here.”

Where there's a Willow, there's a way-oh

Previously

Willow woke up with a slight gasp with her heart pounding and though she couldn't remember what she had dreamt about she knew it must have been something terrifying. As Willow calmed a little she noticed that Tara wasn't next to her. She started to worry again a little, as she always did when Tara was out of sight, until she heard someone singing to themselves downstairs. After listening for a moment she guessed that it was Tara. Getting up, Willow grabbed a robe then stumbled blindly downstairs. Reaching the bottom she heard a cat meowing outside, and absently wondered if Miss Kitty was fighting with another cat. Making her way into the kitchen she said, "Tara I think..." She stopped when it suddenly hit her that the woman standing in front of her wasn't Tara. It was only then that she realized that she wasn't home. In fact she had no idea where she was.

"Hey, Willow, you're awake."

"Where am I?"

"I'm Kathy, this is my home." She explained, "I found you outside earlier this morning. You were unconscious so I brought you inside."

"Do I know you?"

"No, this is the first time I've met you."

"It's just you knew my name."

Kathy looked embarrassed, "Oh well I kind of went through your wallet. But I promise I didn't take any cash and I didn't buy too much with your credit card." She smiled at this last comment making Willow think of Tara. "You know you look kind of peaky, I think you should sit down." Willow gave Kathy a grateful look, she didn't feel like standing much longer, then started looking for a chair. Finding one she pulled it over, noticing as she did that her hands were shaking.

D minus 2 days

Kathy woke up with a gasp. She fumbled for a moment, before managing to get the light on. “Wow, that was an intense dream. Ow!” She noticed her hand was aching. Lifting it up, she saw a slash a long her palm.

There was something coming out of the ground. Large insectoid creatures. They were coming up all around her. One of them slashed at her with one of its claws, cutting her hand.

“I cut myself in my sleep? Way to go, spaz.”

She went into the bathroom, got out a roll of bandage and began cutting off a strip.

She backed away from the things. “Megan, where are you?”

One of the creatures lifted itself up, looking directly in her eyes. “She's already dead.”

“Megan?” Kathy wrapped the bandage around her hand. “Maybe I should... No I'm being silly, it was just a dream.” A few moments later she was at the phone dialling Megan's number. After a couple of minutes, she hung up. “So there was no answer, that doesn't mean anything. It was just a dream.”

She had met Megan three years ago, shortly after moving to America and had rented the apartment opposite Megan. After becoming friends, she had started helping Megan with the archaeological work she was doing. It was then that the nightmares started.

After a couple of months Kathy had gotten her current job and had moved away. The nightmares stopped and she soon stopped thinking about it.

That is until a few days ago when she had gotten a package from Megan. It had just been a sheet of parchment with some pictograms on it. However, Kathy was certain that it was connected to the dream she had had.

She put the dream out of her mind, deciding she wouldn't let it bother her. An hour later she decided to try calling some mutual friends.

***

Kathy was starting to do some washing up when the phone rang. “Why does the phone always ring when you're up to your elbows in soapy water? They better not be selling something.” She answered the phone, “Hello.”

“Kathy, it's Sam.”

“Hey, I tried calling you earlier.”

“Yeah, I got the message. I tried to call you last month. I guess I must have an old number.”

“Yeah, I've been moving about a lot lately. I wanted to talk to you about Megan.”

“Funny, that's what I wanted to talk to you about. There's no good way to say this, so I'll just say it. She's dead.”

For a moment Kathy couldn't believe what she'd just heard, wouldn't believe it. “Was it...” Kathy found her mouth too dry to talk. She swallowed and managed to go on, “Was it her heart?”

“No, it was an aneurysm. She died in her sleep; I doubt if she felt anything.”

“Okay, thanks.” Kathy carefully hung the phone up. Then, sinking down the nearest chair, she started sobbing.

As she started to recover, something odd occurred to her. If Megan had died a month ago, who had sent her the package? There was a lot about this she didn't understand. Fortunately she knew some people she thought might be able to help.

***

After pulling over by the side of the road Kathy got out of her car and, giving the wheel a quick kick on the way by, she went to the bonnet. She was renting this car whilst her own was in the garage and had grown convinced that it hated her. She had been having problems since she got it. After opening the bonnet she stared at the empty space for a moment before saying in a stupid voice, “Oh hey Kathy looks like someone's stolen your engine. Oh well that's okay, I've got a spare in the boot.” She slammed the bonnet shut, muttering, “Idiot.” She then walked round to the back and opened the boot up. As soon as she did she was enveloped by a cloud of steam coming from the engine. “Oh this is just brilliant.”

“Can I help you at all?” a young man asked as he approached Kathy.

“Wow, I guess chivalry isn't dead after all. Do you know anything about cars?”

“Not really, no.” The man's face changed, his forehead growing ridges and his teeth becoming longer.

“What the...” Kathy took a step back and bumped into the back of her car.

The vampire pushed her back against the car and then leant over to bite her neck. He held his mouth over her neck for only a moment before pulling away. He looked at her with an expression of disgust. “What is wrong with you? That was revolting!”

She was too shocked to think of an answer.

The vampire wiped his mouth on his sleeve. “Well even if I can't drink you I can still kill...” He stopped, a look of pain on his face. A moment later he exploded into dust.

Behind where the vampire had been, Kathy saw a dark haired woman wearing all black.

“What the fuck just happened?” she asked as she held a hanky up to her neck.

“Are you okay?” the woman asked.

“I'm so far from okay I couldn't even see it with a telescope.”

“Where're you heading? Maybe I can help you get there.”

“I'm going to sixteen thirty Revello Drive.”

“Shit, I have to go.” the woman turned and ran down the road.

“Wait!” Kathy called out but she had already disappeared. “I don't even know your name.” Realising she was on her own Kathy went back to try to fix her car.

***

Kathy managed to get her car working well enough to make it to Buffy's house. Willow answered the door. “Kathy, what are you doing here?”

“At the moment, bleeding mainly.” Kathy indicated the hanky she was holding to her neck.

“Oh God, you should come in.”

Going through, she said, “Hi everyone.”

“Kathy, what happened to your neck?” Tara asked.

“Oh I was just mugged by some guy who tried to bite me.”

“Oh, that would be a vampire,” Buffy told her.

“Hmm, I guess that would explain the whole drinking my blood thing.” Kathy took the hanky away from her neck and, noting that the bleeding had stopped, she put it away.

“But if you were attacked by a vampire, why aren't you dead?”

“That was weird. He bit me then started complaining about my blood not being good enough.”

“The only time we've seen that was the people who were doing steroids,” Buffy said. “You aren't?”

“No, of course not.”

“Maybe it's because you're diabetic?” Willow speculated.

“Who knew vampires were so fussy?” Buffy asked. “So what happened after that?”

“He was going to kill me when poof.”

“Poof?” Willow asked.

“He turned into dust. I think it had something to do with the woman shoving a stake through his heart.”

This got everyone's attention. Buffy, in particular, seemed rather agitated as she asked, “Who was it?”

“I don't know; she disappeared before I could find out. It was all very masked heroish, though without the mask.”

Buffy got up and walked out.

“What did she look like?” Willow asked.

“She was about my height, with long dark hair. She was wearing all black.”

“Sounds a bit like Faith,” Dawn pointed out.

“But Faith's in prison, Angel visited her while we were there. Buffy?” Willow noticed that Buffy had left.

A short while later Buffy came back. “I called Angel. Faith's still in prison.”

“That's what I just said,” Willow said. She turned to Tara. “Didn't I?”

“Yes Willow, you did,” Tara answered. “So we have a mystery woman in town killing vampires.”

“I was right,” Kathy said. “You do know all about this supernatural stuff. I mean after what happened in that weird manor and with you being witches I thought you would, which is why I came.”

What Kathy had said brought everyone's attention back to her. “Why did you come here?” Buffy asked.

“You see last night I had a nightmare.”

“You came all this way over a nightmare?” Buffy asked.

“Yeah, one which left me with this.” Kathy held her hand up, showing them the bandage.

“Did this nightmare involve any burnt men with knives on their gloves?” Dawn asked.

“Maybe I should start at the beginning.” Kathy explained about meeting Megan, and the dreams she had been having.

“So what happened?” Tara asked.

“Well I got a new job and had to move. The nightmares stopped and pretty soon I forgot about it. Until a couple of days ago I got a package from Megan. It was one of the parchments she had found at the site and a note asking me to look after it.”

“So why not ask this Megan about it?” Buffy asked.

“I tried, but I wasn't able to get through to her. Then today I got a call telling me she had died last month in her sleep, an aneurysm.” Kathy got out a piece of parchment in a clear plastic folder, out of her bag. “This is it.” She handed it to Willow.

“Buffy, look at this,” Willow said. She showed it to Buffy pointing at one of the pictures. It was of an eye within a circle.

“I think we need to show this to Giles,” Buffy said.

“So I'm not going mad? There is something weird going on?”

Willow nodded. “It looks that way.”

“Well I better get going. I need to find a hotel or motel or something.”

“You can stay here,” Buffy offered.

“You're sure?”

“You'll have to have the couch but yeah I think it'd be better,” Buffy said.

“You mean less chance of me running into any vampires?”

***

“So what do you think about visiting England?” Willow asked suddenly.

Tara had just been drifting off to sleep so it took her a moment to process what Willow had just said. “Uh, well I'd like to go there at some point.”

Willow nodded. “What do you think about visiting England for our honeymoon?”

“Oh well I guess I hadn't really thought about the honeymoon.”

“But it's something that needs to be thought about. I mean, we can't have a wedding without a honeymoon and it needs to be organised. Flights need to be booked, hotels need to be reserved, itiniaries need to be drawn up. There's a lot to think about.”

“Willow I'd love to go to England, or anywhere else, as long as it's with you.”

Willow kissed Tara on the cheek, “You're such a sweet talker.”

Tara stifled a yawn then said, “Can we discuss this in the morning?”

“Sure. I just wanted to see what you thought about the idea.” Tara closed her eyes and was starting to drift off again when Willow said, “What about Scotland?”

Where there's a Willow, there's a way-oh

D minus 1 day

At the meeting Giles said, “I've been going over the document that Kathy gave us but I'm having some trouble translating these hieroglyphs.” Willow and Tara had dropped the parchment off at the magic while on their way to class, that morning and Giles had spent the day trying to decipher it, without much luck.

“I'm shocked,” Xander said. “This is really ruining my image of you knowing everything.”

“Yes, well, somehow I'll live with that. I've been trying to get some help from the Watcher's Council but have been move about from pillar to post. I'm starting to think they're giving me the run around.”

“Do you think it's deliberate?” Buffy asked. “In order to put us in our place. I'd rather not have to go through any more of their tests just to get some intel.”

“I agree. However I think the Council is just being extra bureaucratic at the moment.”

“Um,” Willow said hesitantly. “This might seem a silly idea but maybe we should ask Kathy.” She indicated the woman who had been quiet throughout this exchange. “I mean maybe her friend had some luck translating it?”

Kathy gulped as everyone turned to her. “Uh, yeah she did have a bit of success. She said it wasn't like any other language she'd seen, but by comparing it to other documents and doing something clever she was able to get some understanding of what it said.”

“And that is?” Giles asked.

“Oh, well it seemed to be about the people's deities. It described some of their rituals. Uh, they worshipped a group called...” Kathy paused. “Um, it was something like those we worship or those who rule.” She shook her head, looking annoyed. “No, that's not right. It's something silly like that though. Sorry I guess it wasn't that much.”

“No,” Giles said. “Knowing the purpose of the document will help.”

“Oh and that eye thingy, that was their symbol,” Kathy said.

“The people, or the deities?” Giles asked.

“The deities.”

Tara looked as though she was going to say something, but stopped, sitting back down in her seat.

“Well thank you, that will be useful. Tara, you said that Wesley had fallen out with Angel and the others?”

“Yes. They didn't tell me any details, but apparently they weren't on speaking terms.”

“That's a pity. He was one of the Council's best translators. Still I suppose we should get started on researching this. I've made a note of some books which I think will help.”

“Um, should we be researching this?” Tara asked.

“I thought you of all people would want to know the details about this.”

“I do. Definitely. Just don't we have more pressing matters like the Great One?”

“I haven't forgotten about him. However, given the scant information we have, there is little to research. I am expecting a couple of calls about it, but until I get those we might as well focus on this matter.”

Tara nodded, uncomfortable that her problems were being given priority.

***

Kathy pushed the door to the study open, trying to keep the cups of coffee from spilling. This was made harder by the fact she'd overfilled them both. She paused for a moment to watch the young woman working in there. Her long, dark hair was pulled back in a loose pony tail, and she was wearing a pair of small, octagonal reading glasses. She chewed her lip slightly as she read one of the many printouts on her desk.

“I thought you might want some coffee,” she said, taking a step into the room.

Megan turned and grinned at her. “Thanks, you're a life saver.”

Kathy carefully put the mugs down on a clear part of the desk. “So how's it going?”

“Pretty well, I've almost translated one of these documents.”

Kathy sat down, giving Megan an impressed look. “Wow, that's really good. So come on, what does it say?”

Megan picked up one of the printouts. “It's an incantation to bring an inanimate object to life. Would you like to hear it?”

Kathy nodded as she picked up one of the mugs and took a sip.

“Okay. It says,” Megan cleared her throat then read out:
Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss
Old fat furry cat-puss
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring
Wake up, be bright
Be golden and light
Bagpuss, Oh hear what I sing

Kathy clamped her mouth shut as she quickly swallowed the mouthful of coffee she'd just taken. After she'd recovered a little she said, “God Megan, are you trying to make me spit coffee over your work?”

Megan grinned. “I just like hearing you laugh.”

Kathy jumped as Tara touched her arm. Blushing, she said, “Sorry, I was miles away.”

Tara smiled. “I noticed. I was just going to go on a Mocha run, I was wondering if you wanted to come with.”

“Sure, I could do with some air. Is Willow coming with?”

Tara pointed to where Willow was practically buried under a pile of books. “I think it'll be a while before Willow comes up for air.”

As they left, Tara said, “This must all be quite a shock to you.”

“You can say that again. I mean when all that stuff happened with Willow, I thought, 'Wow this is weird,' but that it was a one off thing. That nothing like that would happen again. Now there's vampires, ancient cults and I'm thinking you're all old hats at this.”

Tara nodded. “We are. I mean Willow's been doing this longer than me, but we've dealt with our share of apocalypses.”

“Wait, apocalypses? As in more than one?”

Tara nodded.

“Oh, boy. This is all just...” Kathy shook her head.

“It's okay to be freaked.”

Kathy nodded but didn't say anything. After a few minutes she said, “I got a letter from Paula a couple of weeks ago.”

Tara was a little surprised by the sudden change in topic but just said, “Paula?”

“Oh yeah, she was my best friend in university. We kind of broke up after I found out that she was sleeping with my boyfriend.”

“That must have been difficult.”

“You could say that. The worst thing was, she was my friend. I don't know how she could betray me like that.” Kathy shook her head. It still hurt her to think about how her friend had gone behind her back, lied to her for so long. “As for Adam, well it was almost a relief.”

“A relief?”

“Yeah well. I liked Adam; he was nice, good looking but there wasn't any...”

“You didn't click?”

“That's it; we didn't. I think I just stayed with him because it was comfortable, being with someone, you know?”

Tara nodded. “You know one day you'll meet someone that you really click with and then it won't just be about being comfortable.”

“I think I might have already met that person.”

“Really? Who?”

Kathy stopped dead in her tracks and turned around looking shocked. “Huh? Oh, I got distracted. I was telling you about the letter.”

Tara nodded, wondering what Kathy had been going to say, and why she had stopped herself.

“Anyway Paula said she'd divorced him.”

“Him? Oh you mean Adam.”

“Yeah. When I found out about them, they kept telling me how they hadn't wanted to hurt me but that they truly loved each other and were meant to be together.” By this point they had reached the Espresso Pump. As they joined the queue Kathy went on, “They even used the phrase soul mates. Now, just a few years later, they've split up. I have to wonder, is any of it real? How do you know if you've really found your true love, and it's not just indigestion?”

“It's hard to say. I guess it is possible to think what you've got is the real thing, and for it to turn out not to be. On the other hand I do think true love really does exist and you can find it.”

“You mean like you and Willow?”

“Yes.”

“I guess you're one of the lucky ones. Sorry, I'm feeling pessimistic at the moment.”

They had reached the till, so Tara made the order.

As they left the shop with the coffee, Kathy said, “I was thinking about Megan earlier. I think she really would have fit in with your group.”

“She would?”

“Well she was really good at research, being an archaeologist. Plus she was an expert at kick boxing.” Kathy smirked. “I think she wanted to be like Lara Croft. Plus she was totally insane. Uh, in a good way. You see she had this condition. I don't know what the technical name is, but she basically had a hole in her heart.”

“Weren't they able to treat it?”

“She had some medication, but she always had to live with the knowledge her heart could give out at any time. So she was very much about living in the moment, the whole Carpe Diem thing.”

“You must have really liked her.”

“Yeah. I hated having to move away from her. I probably wouldn't except I was broke and really needed the job. I would have kept in touch except...” Kathy shrugged. “Well I suck.” Kathy shook her head. “Like the songs says, all it would have taken was some time.”

Moving awkwardly, because of the tray of drinks, Tara put her arm around Kathy. “It'll be okay.”

When they reached the Magic Box, Kathy held the door open for Tara. Tara put the tray down on the counter then took two of the cups. “I'm just going to find Willow.”

“Sure.” When Tara had taken a couple of steps, Kathy said, “It was Megan.”

Tara turned with a questioning look.

“The only person I really clicked with; it was Megan.”

***

It was a small room with little in the way of furnishing, and nothing to hint at the personality of the person staying in it. No personal affects, which was how Faith liked things, no clutter.

Faith paced her motel room.

Faith couldn't understand why this job was causing her so much trouble. It was just a young witch. Not a vampire or demon, just a witch. That was the problem though, it was a human. Faith had killed a human before, since her time in prison; a young warlock in Alaska had risen a group of zombies and had used them to take over her town. That wouldn't have been a problem except the warlock's ambition had extended to taking over the whole state, perhaps even further. Travelling up to Alaska Faith had managed to work her way into the young woman's confidence. Then, one day, she had walked up behind the woman, put a gun to the back of her head and shot her. Even though she knew she had had to do it, Faith still had nightmares about it.

This was different though. Tara wasn't summoning zombie armies, intent on taking over the world. She was just a young woman who stuttered sometimes and who, it seemed, rocked Willow's world. Maybe there was something else, something she wasn't seeing. What though? She had only met Tara twice. Once when she had taken over Buffy's body and again when Tara had visited her in prison to tell her about Buffy's “death”. However, even with just these two meetings, Faith's instincts told her that Tara was one of the good guys.

She went to pick up the file, hoping she'd find some clue in there that would help resolve this. However, what she found just confused her more. There were instructions that after killing Tara, Faith was to take possession of her body. There were then detailed instructions on how to dispose of the body. It was almost as if they wanted to make sure she didn't come back again.

***

“How's Kathy doing?” Willow asked Tara as she came into the bedroom. “I mean how's she coping?”

“I think she's finding it a bit of an adjustment.”

Willow nodded. “I know it was hard the first time I met a vampire. Plus she does seem to have come in right in the middle of an apocalypse.”

“I don't think that's bothering her as much as what happened to Megan. I think she was in love with her.”

“You mean they were good friends... No, you don't. You mean love, love.”

“I think so.”

“Then why did she leave Megan?”

“I think she might be having trouble coming to terms with her sexuality.”

“But she never had any trouble with either of us.”

“There's a difference between accepting other people being gay, and accepting that you are yourself. Especially if you were raised to believe it's wrong.”

“You mean like you were?”

Tara nodded.

“Kathy's never mentioned her childhood.”

“I could be wrong.”

“Well we'll have to see. If Kathy wants to talk about it, then we'll be here for her.”

***

Buffy blocked a blow from the vampire she was fighting then, hitting it in the chest she knocked it back a few steps. “Come on is that the best you can do?” she asked. “I mean here I was hoping for a bit of a work out but I'm hardly working up a sweat.” The vampire tried to rush her but Buffy had her stake positioned ready, so the vampire impaled itself on it. As it turned to dust she said, “That was almost too easy.”

As she said this she heard the sound of another vampire dusting behind her. Spinning round she saw a cloud of dust. Behind that she could make out Faith.

“You're slipping B. Not normal for you to let a vampire get the drop on you.”

Buffy took a step back. “Faith, what are you doing here?”

“To be honest, I'm trying to figure that out.”

“Last I knew you were in prison; does Angel know you're out?”

“Not exactly no.”

“You know I'm not exactly hearing a lot of reasons why I shouldn't kick your ass and send you back to prison.”

“Because I have information, about Tara.”

“What do you mean, about Tara?”

“There are people who want her dead.”

“Go on.”

“You know it's a bit chilly. Maybe we can go somewhere warmer and I'll explain everything.”

***

Buffy glowered at Faith, who was quietly nursing a cup of coffee. They had gone to the Espresso Pump but so far she hadn't heard much in the way of explanation. “I'm waiting.”

“Okay. A couple of months after I turned myself in I was contacted by the government, wanting me to work for them. They would let me out to do jobs for them, in return for a reduced sentence.”

“That's nice. It has what to do with Tara now?”

“Shit B, I'm getting there. I've got to start at the beginning, don't I?”

“All right fine. What sort of jobs?”

“Mainly taking care of demons that the military couldn't deal with. That's why I'm out of prison.”

“You're on a job, to do with Tara.”

“No,” Faith didn't like lying but she knew Buffy would never trust her if she knew the real reason for her being in Sunnydale. “It was a small job, nothing to worry about. But I've found out there are people who want Tara dead. More than that, they want her killed in a way which stops her from coming back. I mean I thought you were the only one who did the back from the grave trick.”

“No, Tara managed it as well.”

“Well then I guess that that makes sense.”

“Okay, you better come with me to meet the others. If you're lying though...”

“Yeah, I'm pretty sure I won't live to regret it.”

***

Cordelia watched Angel through the window of Wesley's office talking on the phone. As he came out of the office she said, “Don't tell me the world's ending again.”

“Huh?”

“It's just you've got that serious, world's coming to an end look on your face.”

“Oh. I was talking to the prison, Faith's in solitary again.”

“Well then at least we know she's still in prison.”

“It just seems she's in solitary a lot.”

“Faith never was the most stable of people.” Looking at Angel, she said, “What, do you think she's broken out and they're covering it up for some reason?”

“I don't know.” Angel walked away, still looking worried.

***

As they were getting ready for bed Tara asked Willow, “Are you feeling okay? You seem a little on edge.”

“I don't know. I'm feeling weird. My skin's all tingly. It's kind of hard to explain.”

Tara walked over to Willow and put her hands on her shoulders. “Do you think it's from the binding?”

“It could be. I mean having your essence split in two and then rejoined has got to have some side effects.”

You can miss me after this post! :pride Hehe, am glad you updated again before I went on vacation.
Poor Kathy, she has been through a lot.
Good that Faith went and told Buffy, even though she wasnt completely honest. I cant help thinking: Who wants Willow evil? Okay, she had that binding. So does these people know? Is it that Willow and Tara together are endangering something they are planning to do...? :smash

Where there's a Willow, there's a way-oh

D

Everyone gathered at the Magic Box the next day for an update on their progress. As the others got themselves settled, picking out their favourite chairs and organising their drinks and snacks, Buffy said, “I've discovered who our mystery vampire slayer is. It was...”

“Faith!” Xander gasped, jumping out of his chair.

“Yes, how did you...” Buffy stopped as the door opened. She turned and saw Faith in the doorway.

“Hey, B.”

“Buffy,” Willow said in a stage whisper. “Faith's here.”

“I know Will. She's here to help.”

Willow glowered at Faith.

“Hey Red, if looks could kill, I'd be mildly stunned by that one you're giving me.”

Ignoring Faith's comment, Willow asked Buffy, “You trust her?”

“Yeah, for now I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt.” Looking at the faces around her, Buffy realised that neither Xander nor Willow were in a forgiving mood mood.

Just as she was wondering what to say, Kathy stood up. “Uh, hi. I'm Kathy, the new girl. I just wanted to say thanks for the whole saving my life thing. Being killed by that vampire would really have sucked. No pun intended.” With that she sat down again.

Buffy noticed that with that reminder of what Faith had done, everyone seemed to be a bit less ready to judge her. She Turned to Faith and said, “Maybe you should tell them what you told me.”

Faith explained as much as she could about the death warrant on Tara, without giving away any details of her own involvement. They were all taken aback by the news, with Willow reacting the strongest. Tara took her hand and reassured her that they'd deal with this.

“Why would anyone want to hurt Tara? She's harmless,” Anya commented. Which seemed to be the cue for them to start researching.

***

Faith tried to focus on the book in front of her. It wasn't an easy task, partly due to the fact the book was totally boring but also partly due to the turmoil she was feeling. Sitting so close to the woman she was supposed to kill was making her nervous. She kept glancing up at Tara, trying to get an idea what she was like. Tara was discussing a large, heavy looking tome with Willow and the new girl... Kathy. She wasn't picking up any bad vibes from Tara, no sense that she might be a threat to the country or planet. So what did her employers know that she didn't?

Turning back to her book, Faith realised that the fact she was having so much trouble with this decision was an indication of what she had to do.

Just as she had come to this conclusion, Buffy approached the table saying, “Guys, you know how much I hate researching on an empty stomach, so I'm going to get some food for us all.”

Standing, Faith said, “I'll come with if you don't mind.”

Buffy shrugged. “Sure.”

***

Once they had left the Magic Box, Faith stopped and said, “Listen B, I had an ulterior motive for us leaving.”

“Sure you did. You like research about as much as I do.”

“That's not it, I wanted to talk to you about why I'm in Sunnydale.”

“Oh you mean your mission? Do you want help with that?”

“Not really.” Faith stopped then as Buffy turned to face her she said, “B, I was sent here to kill Tara.” Her head jerked back as Buffy punched her in the face.

“God dammit Faith. I was starting to think that maybe I could trust you.”

“Shit B, I wasn't going to go through with it. Do you think I'd be standing here telling you if I was?”

“You know 'F' I wouldn't put anything past you. Now how about telling me the truth. Why are you out of prison?”

“I told you I'm working for the government.”

“Why the hell would the government want Tara dead?”

“I don't know. They don't tell me or stuff like that. They're like the Watchers Council.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because I'm telling you the truth. There are people who want Tara dead. I don't know what she's done, but I know it's not right. So I want to help you.”

***

They went back to her apartment. Once there, Buffy said, “Okay let me have a look at your orders.”

“What?”

“Well you said they wanted to make sure she didn't come back, I just want to see what you meant. You do have a copy, don't you?”

“Sure B.” Faith tapped her forehead. “Right up here. Listen, this is very much a Mission Impossible type deal. If I get caught they'll deny any knowledge of me working for them. So obviously I don't get to keep any incriminating documents. They wanted me to burn her body and they seal the ashes in a flask filled with holy water.”

Buffy nodded. “Who is this they? Who are you working for?”

“Officially it's called the Department of Fisheries and Livestock Management.”

“That sounds pretty dull.”

“They need to have something to put on the budget forms.”

“And unofficially?”

“They're known as the Bad Wolf Group. Don't ask me where the name comes from. The thing is when a department comes up against something supernatural, something they can't handle, eventually it gets to us and we deal with it.”

“But then why kill Tara?”

“I really don't know.”

Buffy seemed about to answer when her phone rang. She looked at the screen for a moment. “Oh hell, I forgot about Willow.” Answering it she said, “Hi Willow. Sorry, There was something Faith and I wanted to look into. I'll be back soon.” She put the phone away and turned back to Faith. “If you don't go through with the job, they'll send someone else won't they? How long?”

“That's the weird bit. According to my orders I was supposed to come to Sunnydale right away, but not actually perform the hit till tomorrow.”

“Why the delay?”

Faith shrugged. “I can call them up, try to buy some time, but we'll only have a few days, a week tops.”

“Okay then, you do that. I'll break the news to Tara.”

***

“So it's not some monster that wants Tara dead, it's the government,” Willow summarised.

Buffy nodded.

“And they sent Faith to do it.”

Buffy nodded again.

“But she's not going to,” Tara said quickly. “That's why she came to us.”

“Yeah, she totally knows Tara's one of the good guys,” Buffy added.

“But is she?” Willow asked.

“Why would the government want me dead? I'm not a dissident, or a terrorist, I'm just a college student. Like Anya said, I'm harmless,” Tara said.

“I'm not sure about harmless,”Buffy said. “Not with the way you wield an axe. But you're right, it doesn't make sense.”

“Tara,” Kathy said, “you said the Beast said the darkness in your home town had been corrupting the people there.”

Tara nodded. “It said almost everyone was affected by it. Is it connected?”

“Well if Megan's translations were right then people used to worship it.”

“So it's probably pretty powerful,” Buffy said. “We know it killed your mother, now maybe it's after you.”

“Because it sees you as a threat,” Willow said. “If it's controlling the government then it probably has designs beyond just controlling one small town.”

“So anyone who's immune is a threat to it,” Tara said in a quiet voice. “This is a lot to take in.”

Willow put her arms around Tara, holding her close for a moment. “It's going to be okay. We're going to deal with this.”

***

At dinner, Tara sat opposite Willow and spent the entire time rubbing her foot slowly, gently up and down Willow's legs. Then afterwards they sat together on the sofa, their arms round each other.

After saying goodnight to the others, Willow and Tara quickly made their way up to their room. They were kissing each other even before they were through the doorway.

***

The Great One stood staring out of a window as the skies around his lair began to cloud over. His emissary approached, saying, “Master, the demons are getting restless. How long before we move?”

“Soon. It will be very soon now.”

As the sky darkened further, and rain began to fall, the Great One opened a door and went outside.

***

Carefully pulling Tara's top off, Willow whispered, “Goddess Tara, you get more beautiful every time I see you.”

“You make me... beautiful,” Tara breathed back, her voice catching as Willow ran her hands down Tara's body.

***

The rainfall grew in intensity till giant raindrops were smashing down into the ground. Then the area began to cool down, freezing the rain, turning it into a deadly barrage of hail.

***

With both of them undressed, they began kissing each other fiercely, there hands moving over each other's bodies. While this was going on, they made their way over to the bed, and fell on top of it.

***

The Great One ripped his clothes off. The hail stones cut his skin but he didn't seem to notice the pain.

***

Their moans of pleasure grew louder as they explored each other with their hands and mouths, bodies moving together.

Tara felt the pleasure growing within her. As she climaxed, she cried out, “Willow!” Tara kissed her face and throat, whispering, “I love you Willow. I love you so much.”

***

“Why does he do that?” a vampire asked the Emissary, watching the Great One.

“It is to cleanse himself. Prove he is worthy of the power he will need to achieve his goal.”

“And what are those goals?”

“The extermination of all life on the planet. Gaia has had a free hand for too long. It's time she was brought down.”

***

Faith was getting ready to go out on patrol when there was a knocking at her door. Answering it she saw Buffy there.

“Hey I was about to patrol a bit,” Buffy said.

“Good timing; so was I.”

They were just at the entrance of one of the cemeteries when they were bathed in darkness, so deep that they couldn't see through it even with their enhanced eyesight.

“What happened to the lights?” Faith asked.

“Must be a power cut.”

“So what happened to the stars?”

Buffy realised that the stars had vanished, as had the moon. “Hell.”

There was an explosion across the other side of town. The faint light from the fire allowed them to see a little.

“Something bad's happening.”

“Check on Giles, I'll check on the others,” Buffy said.

***

Angel stopped the car, looking at the shimmering field which seemed to be reflecting the headlights.

“Why are we stopping?” Cordelia asked.

“There's something there.” he got out and walked up tot the shimmering wall. Putting his hand on it he found it was solid.

“That field goes all around Sunnydale,” Whistler said, approaching them from the side of the road.

“How do we get through?” Angel asked.

“I'm afraid you don't.”

“Buffy needs me.”

“Maybe. The problem is, by the time that field goes down, everything in Sunnydale will have been resolved. There are problems that need you in LA. Let Buffy take...”

A figure moved up behind Whistler and hit him round the back of the head with a cane. He fell to the floor, unconscious. As the figure moved forward they saw it was a young woman, who was wearing a sparkling suit. “Is he annoying, or is he annoying?”

Angel felt his face shifting as he took a step forward. “Who are you?”

“That's not important. What is though is Buffy does need you.”

“How do I get through the wall?”

“I'm afraid he was telling the truth there.”

“Who the hell are you?”

“Listen, this wall is going to come down. When it does Buffy is going to need you.”

Angel stared at the woman. For some reason, he felt he could trust her. He knew it was foolish to take her word over Whistler's so easily. He had only just met her, while without Whistler he wouldn't have gotten past his living in the streets and eating rats phase. Yet he did believe her. A part of him pointed out that it might just be that he wanted what she said to be true, for Buffy to still need him, even after all this time. Angel ignored that idea and asked, “What should I do?”

“Wait here. When the wall falls, get to the Magic Box as quickly as you can. There won't be any time to lose.”

“What's your name? At least tell me that.”

The woman nodded. “It's Ashford, Megan Ashford.” Megan hit her cane against the ground and both she and Whistler disappeared.

“So what are we going to do?” Gunn asked.

“We wait,” Angel said.

***

The Great One stood on a platform staring at the horde of demons and vampires in front of him. “As promised I have plunged this town into eternal darkness. I have taken away all of their tools.” He paused for a moment. “So why are you waiting for? Go out there and have some fun.”

I was really glad that Faith told Buffy everything, without holding anything back. Better for all of them to know everything and be prepared.
The part that switches from Willow & Tara to The Great One cleansing himself was beautifully written! :smash

Well the feedback has picked up with this last update, which is nice :peace

I've written the next story and am editting it at the moment. I'm just having a bit of trouble getting it to the stage where I'm happy enough with it to send it to my beta.

Anyway I'm hoping to start posting it by the end of the week.

Times of Darkness

Chapter 1

Kathy woke up with a groan. She Rolled over and grabbed her watch, only to find that it wasn't working. Deciding, from how dark it was, that it was still early, she rolled over and tried to get to sleep. This was made impossible by the fact that she really needed the toilet. She sat up and fumbled along the wall till she found the light switch. She flicked it, but nothing happened. She flicked the switch a couple more times but with no more luck.

“What a great time for the bulb to go,” Kathy said as she stood up. There was just enough light to be able to make it to the door. Once in the hall Kathy again fumbled round on the wall till she found the switch. This light also wasn't working. “Okay, so maybe the electricity's gone.” She was tempted to go back to bed, but now she was up she really needed to get to the toilet. Running her hand along the wall Kathy made her way slowly upstairs. She was about halfway up when her hand caught a picture and knocked it to the floor with a crash. “Bugger.”

***

Willow woke up with a start. She was sure she had heard something crash outside. She heard some footsteps on the stairs.

“Tara, Tara!”

“What is it?” Tara asked in a sleepy voice.

“I think someone's broken into the house.”

“One minute.” Leaning over Tara tried to turn her light on. “Oh. My light's gone.”

“Mine too.”

Tara found a lighter, lit it, and used the light to get over to the dresser where she lit a candle. While she was doing this there was a knock at the door.

“Hey, guys. I think your powers gone and I kind of broke one of your pictures.”

“Just a moment Kathy.” Putting a dressing gown on, Tara went to the door, where she found a shamefaced Kathy holding the picture in question.

“Sorry, I knocked it off the wall in the dark. I think it might be the whole street that's gone.”

“Actually, I think it's the whole town.” Willow had gotten out of bed and stood looking out the window. The whole town was blanketed in darkness.

“Willow, why don't you and Kathy get some more candles while I go and check on Dawn?”

“That sounds like a plan,” Kathy agreed with a nod.

***

Once Willow had lit herself a candle, she and Kathy went downstairs. “Can you hold this?” Willow handed Kathy the candle and bent down to open up the cupboard beneath the stairs.

“So Buffy's out patrolling, right? I hope the black out doesn't affect her.”

“I wouldn't worry. She's got enhanced slayer vision, so she should be okay.”

“Okay. I guess it must be handy.”

“I imagine so. Here they are.” Willow pulled a bag of candles out of the cupboard.

As they were lighting them the door opened and Buffy came in. “Oh good, you're up.”

“Yeah, we know about the power cut.”

“Will, it's not just the power. The moons gone and there are no stars.”

“I thought it was just cloudy,” Willow said

“There aren't any clouds. The only source of light around are the fires which are starting round the town.”

“So this is more than just a blackout?” Kathy asked.

“I think so. Just after the lights went I was sure I could hear drums beating. So why's everyone up?”

“Oh shit.” Kathy grabbed a candle and ran upstairs.

“What's wrong with...” Willow stopped as she heard the bathroom door open and close. “Well I guess that's why she was up.”

***

A short while later everyone was in the living room surrounded by candles. They had quickly discovered that none of their torches were working.

“So nothing electrical is working,” Willow summarised. “Even if it's not connected to the mains.”

“If you're going to be okay here,” Buffy said, “I better go check on Anya and Xander. This is a perfect opportunity for any vampires to go all mayhemy.”

“What about Giles?” Willow asked.

“Faith was going to check on him.”

“Can you see if Amy's okay?” Tara asked.

“Sure, her apartment's on the way.”

As Buffy collected some weapons Willow asked, “Will you need someone to do candle duty?”

“That's okay; there are enough fires around to see by. You make sure everyone's okay here. I'll come straight back from Xander's.”

***

Faith had made a quick stop at her apartment to pick up some flares and weapons before heading to Giles' apartment. When she reached the apartment she found the front window broken. Drawing a gun, she carefully moved to the window and peered in. The room was a mess. By the flickering light of a few candles she could make out Giles lying on the floor, holding a broken sword up, trying to fend off a tall stony skinned demon that towered over him. It's head was a large rock, almost spherical in shape, save for depressions for it's eyes. It's long, thick arms ended in large mallets. One of them was raised ready to hit Giles. Faith aimed and fired at the demon. Her bullet bounced off its skin, not seeming to do any harm. Unperturbed Faith kept firing at it. Her shots still didn't do it any harm but did distract it from Giles. Grabbing the chance Giles scurried away from the demon and ran towards the window. Faith helped him out and they moved away from the building.

“What is that thing made out of? Stone?”

“Granite actually,” Giles answered.

Faith opened the barrel of her revolver and tipped the casings, and remaining bullets out on the floor. She went through a bag on her belt and got out a loader of armour piercing bullets which she slipped into the gun.

The demon smashed through what was left of the window and roared at the two humans.

Faith took careful aim and fired. This time the shot went through the demon's shoulder, causing a greenish liquid to start seeping out the hole. The demon hesitated, looking confused at what had happened. Faith adjusted her aim and fired again. This time hitting it in the eye. The demon took a step forward and then crashed onto the ground. Faith walked towards it, keeping it covered with her gun.

“I think it's dead,” Giles said. “Do you have any idea what's going on?”

“Not a clue.” Faith put her gun away and looked up. “B was going to check on the folks back home. We should meet up with her there.”

“That would be best. Though I could do with a bit more light.”

“Light I can give you.” Faith pulled a flare out from her belt. “Though it'll probably attract a lot of attention.”

“Then maybe we should do without. I'll follow you.”

“Okay then, let's go.”

As they were leaving Giles said, “Faith, thanks. For saving my life.”

Faith shrugged. “It's what I do.”

“Things look really bad out there,” Dawn said as she peered out the window.

Willow was pacing the room. “I feel like we should be doing something.”

“As soon as the others get here we can get and try to see exactly how bad things are,” Tara said. “See if we can help people.”

“They're probably trying to do as much damage as possible before the sun comes up,” Kathy said. She thought about her words for a moment. “The sun is going to come up, right?”

“We don't know,” Tara answered.

“Hey guys,” Dawn said, “there's a group of vampires chasing a girl down the street.”

“We should get out there,” Willow said.

“There's eight of them,” Dawn told her.

“What about the Ball of Sunshine?” Tara suggested.

“I don't know... It's never...” Willow stammered.

“Whatever we're going to do, it needs to be quick,” Kathy pointed out.

“Okay,” Willow said. “We need you to keep the vampires away from the girl while we cast the spell.”

“How do we do that? Bad language?” Kathy asked.

Dawn had gone to the supply chest and gotten some crucifixes and holy water. She handed a cross to Kathy. “Come on, we'd better hurry.”

Rushing outside Dawn went to the girl while Kathy ran between her and the vampires.

“Hey looks like it worked,” one of the vampires said.

Kathy held up the cross. “Uh, the power of Christ compels you!”

The vampire jumped at Kathy knocking her to the floor. Kathy struggled to push it away, yelling, “I'm diabetic!”

A moment later the weight on her vanished and some dust settled on her face. Kathy opened her eyes to see that the area was bathed in light and all the vampires had gone. She stood up and while she dusted herself off she said, “That's a pretty potent spell. Where's the girl?”

Dawn just pointed at a small pile of dust where the girl had been.

“You mean she was...”

Dawn nodded.

“The spell won't last long,” Tara said. “We should get back inside.” As they were going in the light started to fade. It had gone out by the time they were inside.

Looking back outside Kathy said, “That's a handy spell, it's a shame you can't make it permanent.”

Willow considered this for a moment and then said, “Maybe we can.”

Whistler woke up to find himself in a wooden hut, on a hard wooden seat. He Tested his arms and found he wasn't restrained in any way. He saw Megan standing looking out a window.

“Why are you doing this?” he asked. “Is it revenge? The Powers had no choice. The knowledge you had obtained was too dangerous. They had to kill you.”

Megan ignored him for a while. Eventually she turned and said, “This isn't about me or the so called Powers That Be. This is about her.”

“Her? Oh you mean Tara. The Powers don't want to kill her, but they have no choice.”

Megan didn't look impressed by this. “Is that so?”

“This wouldn't be necessary if she had just married Jeb like she was supposed to. It would have been better.”

“Better? You mean being beaten by that drunk. Not to mention letting her children suffer the same abuse that she did. Is that really better?”

“It would have been for the best.”

She took a step towards Whistler, her face angry. “You sick mother fucker.” She raised her hand as if to strike him. Stopping herself she seemed to calm down a bit. “It's lucky for you I'm a pacifist.” She returned to the window. “I know what you're masters are planning. “

“It must happen. Humanity cannot go on as it is now.”

“So to save Humanity you're going to destroy the thing that makes us Human.”

“You can't stop us.”

Megan turned to look out of the window. “You're right I can't, but I know a woman who can.” She turned back to Whistler and smiled. “Two women actually.”
