WillowRulez: I'm glad you liked the update.

I'm not sure why you found Whistler annoying. Unless it was because he thinks it would be better if Tara had been forced to marry an abusive drunk. That might be it.

Will Willow and Tara save the day? find out soon.

Amber Addict: Thanks for the feedback.

You'll find out more about Megan later.

Times of Darkness

Chapter 2

Willow and Tara hurried upstairs, leaving Dawn and Kathy to sort through the weapons and other supplies. Tara started going through the book case picking out any that looked useful, while Willow read her notes on the spell.

“Modifying this spell will be tricky. I mean making sure nothing goes wrong.”

“No trolls?” Tara joked.

“I'm more worried about it blowing up. Cause a ball of flaming death isn't really going to be as helpful as a ball of sunshine.”

“What inspired you when you were creating the spell?”

“Well I was thinking about how Buffy's job would be easier if we could summon up sunshine on demand. Because vampires and sunlight equals poof.”

Tara smiled. “I mean what sources did you draw from? That'll tell use where to start looking.”

“Oh right...” Willow stopped, looking down at the floor.

Noticing Willow hesitating, Tara walked over to her. “Hey, what's wrong?”

“It's just... things are getting pretty bad and everyone's going to be counting on me and I don't know if I can do it. I don't know if I'm strong enough to be able do this on my own.”

Tara lifted her hand to Willow's shoulder, letting her fingers run through her hair. “You're not. None of us are. We can do this together.”

“I can't lose you again.”

“You won't.” Tara kissed Willow on the forehead. “Together we're unstoppable.” A moment later Tara had her hands cupped round Willow's cheeks, and she kissed her deeply.

It was some time before they broke apart. “The spell!” Tara said. They hurried to gather some books together.

***

As she approached the motel, Buffy noticed several fires around it. The main entrance, leading through into the car park, was barricaded. As she looked around for a way in, Buffy had the feeling she was being watched. She Looked up and saw a silhouette moving about on the roof.

“Hey...” Buffy shouted.

Suddenly, a door opened and a woman shouted, “Come in, quickly.”

Buffy ran in and the woman closed the door behind her, locking it and putting a heavy bar in place. “It's not safe out there at the moment,” the woman said.

“Yeah, I kind of noticed that.”

“I'm Jenna.”

“Buffy.”

Jenna led Buffy through to a communal area. Amy was talking to two men. When she finished, Amy turned and said, “Buffy.”

“Amy, how are you doing?”

Amy shrugged. “Surviving.”

Buffy looked around and said, “You seem to have everyone here pretty organised.”

“Yeah, well, when this all started my first thought was to run , but then I thought, what would Willow do? So I got everyone together and started fortifying the place. What do you know about what's happening?”

“Not much at the moment,” Buffy replied, “The place has been plunged into darkness and nothing electrical is working.”

“You forgot about the marauding demons.”

“Oh yes, can't forget about them.”

“So what's the plan?”

“Do you think you can get everyone here back to my place?”

“I think so.”

“Good. When you get there start working with Will and Tara to try and figure this all out. I'm sure they've already started with the research by now.”

***

Willow and Tara stood facing each other. They took each other's hands and began chanting the words to the spell. After a few moments a small ball of light formed between them. It rose up, passing through the ceiling and through the roof of the house. Once it was a short distance above the house it cast a cone of light down around the house and the surrounding area.

“So this is permanent?” Dawn asked.

“It should last a few hours,” Willow answered,

“Long enough to figure out what to do next,” Tara added.

Kathy came into the room, saying, “Guys, Faith and Giles are here.”

They went downstairs to meet them. “Are you two okay?” Tara asked.

“Five by five,” Faith answered.

“I take it this is your work,” Giles said.

Willow nodded.

“Well, this'll keep the vampires away, but not the demons,” Giles said.

“They won't be killed by the sunlight,” Tara said, “but won't they prefer to stay in the dark areas of town?”

“True.” Giles nodded. “Though we should probably work on some fortifications.”

“We can't stay here,” Faith said.

“And why is that?”

“Well we might all be safe here, but unless we're planning on leaving the rest of the town to fend for themselves, there's going to be a lot of people to look after. There's no way we can protect them all unless we move.”

“So where do you suggest?” Giles asked.

“What about the hospital?” Tara asked. “It's large enough and the medical supplies will come in handy.”

“I'm not sure how easy it'd be to defend,” Giles said. “Also it's a long trek from here. Getting everyone there will be hard.”

“While I was driving here I noticed a castlet. What about that?” Kathy suggested.

Willow nodded. “It's closer and we shouldn't have any trouble defending it.”

Giles said, “That's a good plan. We should probably get together the people from this street, make sure they're safe.”

***

Dawn looked carefully around the street, checking that the coast was clear. She then set off down the street with Kathy following close behind clutching the supplies she'd been given. “Let's see, holy water and crosses,” Kathy said. Catching up with Dawn she went on, “So what are we going to say to people? That there's something demonic going on?”

Dawn shook her head. “I was thinking we'd say we'd heard there was a lot of rioting, because of the black out.”

“I guess that'll work.” Kathy brightened. “Or, hey, we could say we're having a black out party.”

“I don't think the people who live here would be interested in that sort of thing.”

“Oh, okay. We'll go with your plan then.” Kathy knocked sharply on the first door. After a couple of minutes she knocked again. “Maybe they're not in.” Kathy peered round to look in the window.

“Or maybe they're asleep,” Dawn countered. She was standing near the gate, keep an eye out.

“That too. So what should....” Kathy stopped as the door swung open to reveal a tall balding man, who was wearing a dressing gown.

“Do you know what time it is!”

Kathy was a little taken aback by his anger. She recovered herself she said, “No, none of our clocks are working.”

Frowning, the man got a watch out of his dressing gown pocket.

“Uh...” Kathy started

“Young lady, it is precisely five minutes past one in the morning.”

“That's not electrical, is it.”

“No, it isn't. Now why don't you...”

“Who is it Marve?” a voice called from upstairs. “What do they want.”

The man turned back inside and shouted, “Go back to bed Nancy. I'll handle this.” He turned back to Kathy. “So what was it you wanted?”

“Well, as you might have noticed the power has gone and there's been a lot of rioting, so we thought everyone from the street should get together, for safety.”

“I'm sure we'll be fine here. Now if that's...”

“But we've got light,” Dawn said.

“What are you...”

He stopped as Dawn pointed back towards her house. It was only then he noticed the sphere of light around it. Like most people who lived in Sunnydale, Marve didn't believe in the supernatural. As far as he was concerned, Sunnydale was a nice, normal town. Sure, the death rate was slightly higher than it ought to be, but that was nothing to worry about. However there was a part of him that saw. A part of him that knew. That knew that the darkness wasn't safe, that it was a time when others ruled the street. That part told him that light meant safety, told him that he needed to get to the light. He Turned to look inside and shouted, “Nancy get dressed! We're going to stay with the Summers!”

“Might want to put some clothes on yourself, old boy,” Kathy said. “The whole Arthur Dent look, so not you.”

As they walked to the next house Kathy said, “hat went well. “

“Brilliantly,” Dawn answered, not able to resist rolling her eyes as she said it.

Kathy started singing the song: “It's the end of the world as we know it.”

***

Amy and her group were getting close to their destination when Jenna touched her on the arm. “There's a light up ahead.”

“I see it. That's where we're going.”

“How did they get light?”

“Magic.”

“Before tonight if you'd said that, I would have thought you were crazy.”

“And now? What do you think?”

“Now I think that I'm crazy.”

About Whistler: I meant that to me he is annoying as a person, not that his actions are. Of course it's great what he has done for Tara but he is always surrounded by an superior air (in the show) and that annoys me :x
“Together we're unstoppable.”

Three words can express so much. Well, four.
Kathy started singing the song: “It's the end of the world as we know it.”
I always felt as if that should be the Buffy theme song.

Now I'm a bit confused. Whistler wanted Tara to have married Jeb, the abusive drunk. So I'm not sure he's done anything great for Tara. (BTW I was agreeing with you, in an overly sarcastic kind of way ;-) )

I always felt as if that should be the Buffy theme song.

:lol

Thanks for the feedback

I got that it was meant to be sarcastic. I just wanted to make a little fun of the whole deal.
In the show he did do SOME nice things but he IS a demon after all and
is annpoying. Period. And that he has weird pov makes him even more hateable. But hey, she never married that guy, so we can just let it go :P

Times of Darkness

Chapter 3

Approaching the apartment building that Xander and Anya lived in, Buffy was surprised to see a pitched battle being raged around it. Xander, Anya and a group of tenants were fighting against a large group of vampires. They seemed to be holding their own, but Buffy knew it wouldn't be long before the battle turned in the vampires' favour. Buffy dusted one of the vampires with a shot from her crossbow. She then ran into the fray, and staked two before they could even react to her presence. Sensing that she was the larger threat, four of the vampires turned to attack Buffy and she soon found herself in a pitched fight.

With some of the vampires diverted the others were able to regroup. Xander bashed a vampire over the head with a crowbar, letting Anya move in and stake it.

“I wish I had an axe,” Xander said.

“What would you do with that?” Anya responded.

“Well I could axe the vamps a question.”

Shaking her head Anya moved to stake a vampire who was too engrossed in drinking from a young man to pay any attention to the battle going on around him.

Buffy punched one of the vampires then staked it. She reversed the stake as she pulled it away and plunged it into another vampire that had lunged at her.

One of the two remaining vampires turned to run but was struck by a Molotov cocktail. It burst into flames, stumbled into another vampire and setting it alight as well.

Buffy tripped, with a low sweep of her legs, the fourth vampire then staked it. She saw there was only one vampire left, a young woman who was backing away from the defenders.

“You don't want to do this. I've... I've got a soul.”

“Is that so?” Buffy asked.

“Yes! Because of the gypsies and their curses and... Oh screw the lot of you, I preferred Hell anyway.” With that she pulled a wooden plank out of the hands of a nearby woman and drove it into her own chest.

“Well that was weird.” She turned and saw the survivors were gathering together and taking care of any wounded.

“Buffy, what's going on?” Xander asked.

“The light and power's gone and all the demons are on the rampage. That's as much as we know. We're all gathering at my place.”

“Then what?” Anya asked.

Buffy frowned, She didn't like not being to give them more. “That's as far as the plan goes at the moment.”

***

Buffy quickly led the survivors from Xander and Anya's apartment building towards her home. Xander was up front with her, whilst Anya watched the rear.

“Hey, what's that?” Xander asked as a light appeared in the distance.

“That's coming from my house.”

“That's handy.”

“Oh yeah, brilliant,” Buffy's tone was dry.

Xander couldn't help notice the sarcasm in her tone. “What's up?”

“Are they trying to draw attention to themselves? I mean there's demons and vampires everywhere and they just threw up an all-you-can-eat sign.”

“Well, um...” Xander didn't know what to say.

“Come on we better hurry up.”

***

“Wow, are they having some sort of street party?” Xander asked as they reached Revello Drive.

“I guess people must be gathering here. I sent Amy here with a load of people, and with all the people from the street...”

“There's a lot more people here than that,” Anya pointed out.

“They must be coming because of the light.”

Spotting them Willow walked over. “Hey Buffy, I was starting to worry.”

“Well when I said Amy's flat was on the way to Xander and Anya's, turns out it's not so much. Will, this light's going to draw the monsters here.”

“We haven't seen any so far. Besides it'll keep the vampires away.”

“It takes sunlight... wait, you got the ball of sunshine working? That's great.”

Willow nodded. “I'm not sure how, but we got it working just when we really needed it. Come on, Giles will want to go over the plans with you.”

“I knew you'd have a plan for dealing with this monster already.”

“Uh, we haven't gotten that far yet. We've just been working out how to keep everyone safe.”

“Well that's good too.”

***

Giles walked out in front of the people milling round in front of Buffy's house.

“Okay, quiet please, everyone.” Everyone kept talking, apparently not having heard him. “I'd like to...”

Walking up beside him, Faith said, “I'll handle this.” Faith drew her gun and and fired a shot up in the air. Everyone went quiet and turned to look at them.

Giles gave Faith an annoyed look then said to the crowd. “We can't all stay here, it isn't safe. We need to move...”

“Where are we going?” Someone from the crowd, an oldish man, who was leaning on a cane, asked.

“We're going to the castle. Now it is quite far so we're going to have to move quickly. In particular you need to keep an eye on each other and watch out for anything untoward...”

“Like what?” a young woman, who had a baby in each arm, asked.

“Vampires, demons,” Faith said. “You know, the things that have been stalking this town for years but you've been too stupid to notice.”

“Thank you Faith. Now Buffy and Faith will lead the way but you'll all need torches and candles for light.”

***

Inside the house, everyone was getting ready. Buffy was looking over a crossbow. Xander grabbed an axe from the weapons chest and said, “Now this is what I'm talking about.”

“What on earth are you going to do with that?” Anya asked.

“I thought that if any vampires attacked, I could axe them a question.”

Shaking her head, Anya walked over to the other side of the room.

Willow and Tara stood facing each other, practising spell incantations. Suddenly, a vase lifted off the mantelpiece and flew at Buffy, forcing her to duck out the way.

“Easy there Will,” Buffy said. “We don't want to put any holes in the dry wall.”

Willow looked around, looking sheepish. “Sorry it got away from us.”

Kathy looked in the chest, with a critical expression. “I'm not really into... Ooh knife.” She grabbed one from the chest and made a couple of stabbing motions. “Heh, just like Resident Evil.”

Tara, who had been watching this, turned to Willow. “She's going to get herself killed.”

“I'm sure she'll be okay.” Willow said, trying to sound confident.

A short distance away Amy snapped her fingers and a candle lit itself.

They all stopped as Giles came in. “Is everyone ready?” He asked. Getting a variety of answers in response he went on, “Well then, we should get going.”

While they were moving out Willow caught up with Dawn saying, “Dawn, while we're travelling to the castle, can you stay close to Kathy.”

“I don't need her to look after me,” Dawn answered, her face getting ready to form into the infamous Dawn Pout.

“Actually I was hoping you'd look after her. She's not used to all this stuff.”

“Oh, sure.” Dawn grinned, glad they were realising she could take care of herself. “I'll keep an eye on her.”

“Thanks.”

“You know, the things that have been stalking this town for years but you've been too stupid to notice.”

Somehow they all must know what's going on, right? I mean, why would everybody leave town in S7 without knowing anything? But yeah, ognorance all around haha.

Times of Darkness

Chapter 4

Buffy and Faith led the group. They were both several meters ahead of the others, both keeping an eye out for any possible attacks.

“I still don't think it's right for a slayer to be using a gun.” Buffy fidgeted with her crossbow. As if trying to make the point that this was a more acceptable weapon for a Slayer.

“Not traditional enough for you, B?” Faith asked. “Face it, the Middle Ages are over.”

Up ahead a couple of cars, barricading the road.

“We better check this out,” Faith said. They jumped over the bonnet of one of the cars and found a pair of police men slumped against the cars, both dead.

“Looks like having guns didn't help these two,” Buffy said.

Before Faith could answer a vampire leapt at her and knocked her to the ground. Buffy moved to help but two more vampires intercepted her.

Faith was grappling with the vampire's throat with her left hand to keep it from biting her. She raised her right hand slightly so her gun was pointing at the vampire's crotch, and fired. As the vampire howled with pain Faith knocked it off her. She rolled on top of it and brought a stake down on its chest. Standing, she saw Buffy dusting one of the vampires. Faith rushed over and staked the other.

“That's one to you and, huh, two to me.”

“I would have gotten that second one if you hadn't butted in.”

“Of course you would.”

Before Buffy could respond a howl rose up from behind them. “Maybe we should go quicker.”

“Right behind you B.”

***

Willow and Tara were walking alongside the mass of people, their hands linked, both to be ready to repel an attack and for mutual comfort.

“So what are we going to do once we get to the castle?” Tara asked.

“We can try the light spell but I'm not sure we can get it to last any longer.”

“Plus it won't help against demons.”

“So maybe we can use the shield spell I used when we were running from the Knights. With Amy's help we should be able to surround the castle.”

“But what if any survivors arrive?”

“We'll need to have a look out who can tell...” Willow stopped as a demon jumped in front of them. It was quite a small, compact creature with heavily muscled arms. It's long mouth was lined with razor sharp teeth and drool leaked from between them. It swung an arm at Willow, but Tara pulled her back out of the way. In doing so Tara stumbled, and fell to her knees. She looked up in time to see the demon approaching her. They stared at each other for a moment, before the demon jumped onto a nearby car. Then Willow's hands were around her helping her to her feet.

Joining hands Willow and Tara turned to look at a car that was parked a short way down the road.

The demon roared, then tensed, ready to jump. Before it could, the car crashed into it, sending the demon flying back through the window of a nearby shop.

“What was that?” someone asked.

“Is it dead?” another voice asked.

As if to answer that question the car started to move.

Pushing her way through the crowds Amy said, “I'll handle this.” She stared at the car and then snapped her fingers. The car exploded – she had ignited its petrol tank.

“Well, that won't draw attention to us,” Willow said.

“Hey, I dealt with the demon, didn't I?”

“I think we should get going,” Tara said, trying to stop an argument from developing.

***

Dawn and Kathy were travelling with a group of people when Kathy stopped. “Hey Dawn, wait a minute.” She walked over to a bin, which was only loosely attached to its post and pulled it away.

“What are you doing?”

“I'm...” Kathy spun round and threw the bin through the door of a chemists. “looting. What does it look like?” She went to the door and used the hole to open it, before going in.

Dawn quickly followed her, saying, “Isn't this kind of illegal?”

“Oh yeah, we could get shot.” Kathy looked at some of the bottles of medicine on the counter then began stuffing them into her bag. “But, needs must when the devil drives.”

“What do we need?”

“Gauze, bandages and antiseptic mainly.”

Nodding, Dawn began clearing the shelves.

Once they had everything they needed they hurried outside. A woman was looking around with a panicked expression on her face. “Jenny! Jenny!” she yelled.

“Is something wrong?” Dawn asked her.

“I've lost my daughter, Jenny. I turned away a moment and she was gone!”

“We'll help you look,” Dawn said.

“Sure,” Kathy agreed.

They crossed over the road and started looking down the side alleys.

“I wonder where she's gotten too,” Kathy said.

“Kids can be like that. Take your attention from them a moment and they're gone,” Dawn said.

Kathy was about to answer when there was a loud bang. The ground shook, causing the alarms of some of the parked cars to go off. “Was that a bomb?”

Looking round Dawn saw a large fire burning a short way across town. “It was probably a gas station or something.”

“Oh. Hey!”

“What?”

“There's our errant child.” Kathy pointed down a side alley, where a small child was standing staring at the wall.

“Careful, she might not be Jenny.”

Nodding, Kathy got her cross out. She walked to the girl saying, “Hey, are you Jenny?”

The girl nodded. “I wanted to talk to the pretty lady.”

“The who?”

“The lady. She was here but she's gone.”

“Oh well your mother's worried about you. You shouldn't run off like this.” Kathy took the girl's hand and started to lead her back to her mother.

“This woman looked just like a princess,” Jenny said.

Kathy gave Dawn a confused look, but she just shrugged in response.

***

Coming over the brow of a hill, Buffy and Faith saw the castle a short distance away. They waited as the others caught up with them. “Well I guess it should be quite easy to defend,” Faith commented.

“Maybe, but we can't afford to just shut ourselves away. The Great One's up to something, and we need to find out what.”

“Sure. Once everyone's safe we can work on that.”

“So this is it then,” Giles said as he approached them. “I hope the demons aren't using it as a stronghold.”

“We should probably check it out before everyone goes in,” Faith suggested.

“But we can't leave everyone out here. They'll attract too much attention,” Giles countered.

“Get everyone in the courtyard,” Buffy said. “They'll be safe there, plus it'll be easy to get everyone out if we do find anything.”

Giles and Faith both agreed. The Slayers headed towards the castle, while Giles told the others the plan.

***

The group of people followed Faith and Buffy down the hill to the castle. They went through the main gate and into the courtyard. Giles and the other Scoobies gathered as the others milled around, looking dazed and slightly confused.

“So what now?” Anya asked.

“We should probably start setting up the defences,” Willow said.

“Are you sure that's wise?” Giles asked. “Buffy and Faith are still checking the place out.”

“Well, if we do need to leave the spells can be dropped quickly, and if we stay we'll want it secured as soon as possible,” Tara pointed out.

“Yes, you're right,” Giles said.

“You know, there's a lot of wood about,” Kathy commented.

Everyone turned to her, wondering what she was saying.

“I thought we could build a bonfire. I mean we could use the light and working on it might take people's minds off of how we're all going to die.”

“You're right. People need something to focus on or they'll just panic” Tara said. “Though we're not going to die. You shouldn't be so pessimistic.”

“Hey, I'm English. pessimism is in my blood.”

“Won't a fire draw attention to us?” Dawn asked.

“From a distance it won't look any different from the other fires around town,” Willow answered.

***

“I never knew there was a castle in Sunnydale,” Faith commented as she and Buffy wandered down one of the corridors.

“We didn't notice it till we took on Dracula a couple of years ago.”

“Dracula? Shit, B, I thought he was just a myth.”

“Nope, he was very much real. I just hope his vampire brides aren't still hanging round here.”

“So what do we do if we run into any demon legions?”

“We get to a window then send up a flare to warn the others.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

***

“So you're saying the cult summoned this guy because they wanted to put everyone on the planet out of their misery? Kind of like, Earthanasia?” Kathy asked, after having been filled in on recent history by Dawn.

“Pretty much,” Dawn answered.

“Hi,” Jenna said as she approached them. “I'm Jenna, I live next door to Amy.”

“I'm Dawn, and this is Kathy.”

“Hello.” Kathy raised her hand in greeting.

“Well, this is all kind of freaky,” Jenna said.

“To put it mildly,” Kathy added.

“I always thought Amy was a nice, quiet girl and it turns out she's a witch. I mean, a, for real, doing magic type witch.”

“There's nothing wrong with that,” Dawn pointed out.

“Oh no. Though all these monsters. Do you think that dark haired girl was right? That we only didn't know about them because we're too stupid?”

“Probably,” Kathy said with a shrug.

“Did you know about them?”

“I don't live in Sunnydale,” Kathy shot back, a little defensively.

“You're not stupid,” Dawn said. “It's just how we cope with all the danger in the world. Our brain has to block out most of it or we'd spend all our time too afraid to do anything.” Noticing the way the two other women were looking at her, she said, “Willow let me read some of her Psychology papers. It was interesting.”

***

Once Faith and Buffy had given everyone the all clear, everyone went into the castle and found rooms in which to get some rest.

Malcolm lay on one of the narrow beds in the barracks, trying to get some sleep. He was just about to give up when he heard someone coming into the room, and turned to look. He quickly lay down again when he saw who it was. It was the witches. They moved quietly across the room, not saying a word to each other. The only sound they made was the faint swish of their clothes. They looked just like three perfectly normal women, and yet, the way they carried themselves hinted at the terrible power they possessed. He knew they were good guys, but he couldn't help feel a certain amount of fear and awe at anyone who could throw a car about with a gesture or ignite it's gas tank with a click of their fingers.

Malcolm breathed a bit easier when the three witches left the room.

WillowRulez I'm glad you found it interesting :D

Amber Addict: Malcolm's just one of the survivors, he isn't anyone important to the story. I just thought it'd be interesting to see them from someone else's point of view and to show that to someone who doesn't know them they are kind of scary-powerful

About the woman Jenny was talking to, it wasn't Megan. Aside from that you'll have to wait to story 11 to find out :)

Thanks for the feedback

Times of Darkness

Chapter 5

Faith found Kathy in one of the bedrooms filling up a syringe from a small bottle.

“Not interrupting, am I?”

“No, I'm just shooting up.”

“Uh, is that wise?”

Kathy laughed and said, “Relax. It's just insulin.”

“You're diabetic?” Faith nodded, a thoughtful expression. “Guess that explains it.”

“Explains what?” Lifting the syringe up Kathy squirted a small amount out, then tapped the needle.

“The others seem to be treating you with kid gloves, like you're going to break.” Faith realised that she was being rather blunt, and quickly added. “Um, no offence.”

Kathy nodded. “Well I'm not going to break. I mean I might go into a coma and die, but I won't break.” Kathy rubbed the underside of her arm with a cloth and then held the needle against it. After a moment, she pulled it away again.

“Is something wrong?” Faith asked.

“My hand's shaking.” Kathy put the needle back to her arm and this time Faith noticed the way the tip was shaking.

Stepping forward she said, “Here, let me. I did extensive first aid when I signed up with the government, including giving injections.”

“Thanks.” Kathy handed the needle to Faith. Faith took Kathy's wrist with one hand and used the other to insert the needle. Kathy hissed with pain as the needle went through her skin.

“Sorry. I'm not so good at giving injections.”

“No. I'm just a big wuss when it comes to pain.”

Faith pulled the syringe out and handed it back to Kathy who started cleaning the needle. “Did you want something?” Kathy asked.

“Oh yeah. There was a doctor amongst the people who came with us. He's helping anyone who was injured but he's going to need help. I heard you used to be a nurse, so...”

“Sure, I'll be right there.”

***

Once everyone had started to settle in the Scooby Gang met up in one of the banquet halls in order to start working on a plan of action.

Giles started off the meeting. “I'm sorry to say I only received one of the calls I was expecting before this field appeared. I am assuming that we won't be able to receive any more help from outside.”

“So what did the call say?” Willow asked.

“Not much that we don't already know. This Great One is a true demon. His arrival was engineered by a law firm called, Wolfram and Hart. I'm at a loss as to what their interest in this matter is. There is very little information about what this demon is and what its weaknesses are.”

“So what you're saying is: we've got nothing,” Buffy summarised.

“Pretty much, yes.” Giles looked abashed.

“Okay then. Here's the plan, I'll find this Great One, then I'll kill him.”

“Uh, Buffy,” Willow said, “maybe you've forgotten this, but didn't he kick your ass last time you fought?”

“Yes, but I'll be ready for him.”

“You're doing it again, the whole 'I'm the Slayer, I don't need anyone else. I can do everything alone' thing.”

“Will, what's wrong? Is this about the Binding?” A look of regret passed over her face, but she quickly banished it. “I said I was sorry about that.”

“No, this isn't about the Binding; I've forgiven you.”

“Then why can't you trust me to do my job?”

Willow stood up and shouted, “Because it's going to get you killed! Maybe you can beat the Great One but that's not the point. The point is: if you keep trying to take the world on your own you're going to die. I'm your friend, Buffy; I'm not going to stand by and let you throw your life away.”

“Willow, I...” Buffy stopped, not sure what to say.

Willow sat down, blushing deeply. “I'm sorry, I shouldn't...”

“No, you're right. We're a team. It's just silly old me has a tendency to forget that sometimes.”

“I've got an idea,” Faith said. “There are probably survivors still out there. Why don't Buffy and I take a look for them, and see what the situation's like out there while you all do the research thing.”

“That's a good idea Faith,” Giles said. “But be careful, both of you.”

“Sure, G-man. Any sign of this 'Great One' and we'll high tail it back here.”

***

“So what's it like?” Faith asked when they had left the castle.

“What was what like?”

“Being dead. The whole afterlife experience.”

“It was nice. Everything was very calm and peaceful.”

“Sounds pretty dull to me.”

“No. It was just very tranquil.”

“I guess whatever floats your boat.”

“It was all a lie.”

“How so?”

“I was convinced my friends were okay. That they were all safe, but they weren't. They were still facing all the same dangers, just without a slayer.”

“So if you had a chance to go back?”

“Not yet.” Buffy smiled. “I've got too much to do.”

***

“Hey, over there.” Faith pointed to the top of a building where a light was flashing on and off. There were three long flashes, followed by three short ones, followed by three long ones again. The light went off a little while, and then the sequence repeated. “An SOS.”

“We should take a look,” Buffy said.

They headed in the direction of the light. After a short while they arrived at an office block. The light was coming from the top floor. They approached the building cautiously, keeping an eye out for any monsters and reached the entrance without any incident.

“I don't see anything about,” Buffy said.

“Maybe they're inside.”

They went in and found the lobby deserted. Faith walked up to the stair well and opened the door. She quickly slammed it shut again, trapping an arm, which had come through the opening.

“What is it?” Buffy asked.

Faith pressed her back against the door, holding it shut. “Zombies. Hold the door a sec.”

Buffy ran over and held the door shut. Faith moved away, aimed her gun through the gap between the door and the frame and fired. The arm fell back through the doorway, letting Buffy slam it shut.

“How many did you see?” Buffy asked.

“The stairs are packed with them.”

“So the people upstairs are trapped. How can we get to them?”

“Lift?” Faith suggested.

“Electricity,” Buffy responded.

“I meant using the lift shaft. We can climb up,” Faith explained.

“Okay, that'll work.”

The two of them managed to pull the doors to the lift open, giving them access to the shaft.

“What if the lift stopped between us and floor we want?” Buffy asked.

“In a power cut they should return to the lowest floor.”

“But this wasn't a power cut. they would have just stopped.”

“True. I wonder if anyone's trapped in there.” Faith lit a flare and glance up the lift shaft. “Shit, you're right. It's in the way.”

“So we've still got no way of getting up, plus there might be people trapped in the lift.”

“I wonder how they got shut in there,” Faith said.

“What?”

“The zombies. Did they all crowd into the stairwell and then close the door behind them?”

“Maybe they're coming up from the basement.”

“Good point. If that's where they're coming from, maybe the thing that summoned them is down there.”

“Could be, only one way to find out.” Buffy peered down the shaft, I don't like the idea of jumping.”

“Easy.” Faith threw the flare down the shaft, then walked over to a nearby fire-hose and started unrolling it. Buffy hurried over and helped her. They had soon pulled it out far enough to hang it down over the edge of the lift.

Facing away from the shaft Faith took hold of the hose and swung herself over the edge and lowered herself down. Once she'd reached the bottom Buffy followed. The flare was starting to burn down so Faith lit another one. They then pulled the doors apart. As they'd expected the basement was filled with zombies. There were two other things in the room: a skinny looking demon with grey skin, and a shimmering, multi coloured portal.

“So you're the one summoning the zombies,” Buffy said.

“I am Namnar, Ruler of the Underworld. Kneel before me and tremble at my magnificence! The whole world trembles...”

BANG

The bullet Faith had fired disintegrated upon hitting the shimmering field around Namnar.

“...at the very mention of my name.” Namnar went on, unperturbed.

“So much for that idea,” Faith said.

“Kill them!” Namnar ordered. The zombies turned and attacked Buffy and Faith.

Buffy cut the head off one of the zombies and then, putting her hand on it's shoulder she leapt up over the heads of the zombies. Somersaulting round, she landed behind Namnar and thrust her sword at his neck. The sword started to disintegrate as it passed through the field, but enough of it survived to impale his neck. He fell to the ground, dead. The portal closed; and a moment later, the zombies collapsed.

“Way to go B. So much for the all-powerful Namnar.”

They went to the stairwell and were able to get up the stairs, though they had to clamber over the bodies of zombies at some points. When they reached the fifth floor Faith said, “I think this is where the lift was.”

They soon found the lift, but it'd already been opened and there was no on inside. “I don't see any bodies around,” Buffy said. “So it probably wasn't the zombies. If anyone was trapped inside then they must have gotten out.”

“Yeah.” Faith said.

A short while later they had reached the top floor. Buffy was just reaching for the door handle when Faith pulled her away. “We don't want them to think we're zombies. They might be armed.” She moved to the door and she shouted, “Hey! Is anyone in there?”

“Yes!”

“Well we're alive, so don't shoot us.” Faith waited a moment as she heard some stuff being moved away from the door. They then went through and found a group of people there.

“What happened to the... those things?” a middle aged man asked, his voice trembling.

“We dealt with them,” Faith said.

“It's not safe to stay here,” Buffy added. “We've got a safe place you can go to.”

“What's going on? There are monsters and everything!”

“We'll explain when we get somewhere safe. We got rid of the zombies but there are other things around.”

Buffy and Faith led the survivors back to the castle. Once they got close, seeing there was nothing around, they told them where to go in the castle before setting out again.

***

“I really don't think this is going to be more survivors,” Faith said. She and Buffy had heard a drum beat a short while ago and were investigating.

“I want to know what's going on. Besides you never know, there might be some here.” As they rounded a building they caught sight of a large fire. Staying under cover behind a section of wall that had collapsed, they watched what was going on. Demons were dancing round the fire to the music provided by the ones beating the drums. Poles were stuck into the fire with bodies hanging from them.

“So this is a demonic hootananny,” Faith said.

“I think we've seen enough. There's nothing we can do for those people.”

“And while the demons are partying, they're not rampaging.”

They started to move away, keeping low, trying to avoid being seen. Yet, despite their best efforts...

“Madala!” The cry went up from one of the demons and was quickly echoed by the others.

“Oh shit,” Faith muttered as they both started to run.

“We can't lead them back to the castle,” Buffy said.

“You don't say.”

They wove through the various streets and back alleys, trying to shake their pursuers. No matter how much they snaked about, or how fast they ran, they could still hear the cries and roars of the pursuing demons.

“Persistent lot, aren't they?” Faith said, as she fired a couple of shots off behind her.

“We can't keep this up much longer.”

“We need to get back to the castle, deal with them there.”

Buffy looked like she was going to argue, but instead said, “Fine, let's do it.”

Changing course they headed straight for the castle.

Times of Darkness

Chapter 6

In one of the towers of the castle, Tara stood gazing over Sunnydale. She turned when she heard someone come in, and smiled when she saw it was Willow. “Hi,” she said.

“Dawn told me you were up here.”

Tara turned back to the window. She looked worried as she said,“There's something out there.”

“Is something wrong?”

“I don't know. Whatever it is, I feel drawn to it.”

“Why?”

Tara shook her head. “I just have this feeling that I'm supposed to go to it.”

Standing next to Tara, Willow said. “Whatever it is, I'll protect you.”

Tara took Willow's hand. “And I'll protect you.”

Before they could say anything else, they saw a flare shooting up from just outside the shield.

***

“Finally,” Buffy said, when they saw the shield, and the castle behind it.

“I just hope they've got someone on lookout.” Without slowing down, Faith pulled a flare gun from her pack and loaded it. She pointed it in the air and fired it. “That should get their attention.”

As they got closer they saw a gap in the shield and a group of people in military uniforms coming out. They knelt down and pointed their rifles at the slayers. Buffy and Faith split up to give the soldiers a clear line of fire at the demons behind them.

“Chap with horns, five rounds, rapid!” The soldiers started shooting. Buffy glanced back and saw the hail of bullets was slowing the pursuing demons down. As they reached the line of soldiers Faith stopped and turned. She drew a second hand gun and started shooting at the demons.

“Get back inside!” Faith shouted.

Once the soldiers were inside, Faith and Buffy followed them.

Willow, who had come outside with Tara and was standing just inside the shield, said, “I'll close the hole.”

“Wait,” Faith said. She watched the last standing demon as it ran towards her. She waited till it was almost at the shield, then, extending her gun, she shot it in the head. When it fell to the ground she said, “Okay, close it.”

Willow and Tara chanted and the hole in the shield started to seal itself.

“So what's the army doing here?” Buffy asked.

“Oh, they're survivors from the local barracks. They arrived shortly after you guys left,” Willow answered.

***

Buffy had just started going over one of the maps of the area when someone tapped her on the arm. She spun round she saw that it was Faith.

“Come and look at this,” Faith said. She led Buffy to one of the windows looking out on the yard of the hospital. Looking out Buffy could make out hordes of demons moving round.

“There's hundreds of them!”

“Thousands,” Faith corrected. “You know if the spell the witches put up fails...”

“Then we're all dead.”

***

“Have you heard?” Willow asked as she caught up with Tara.

“Yes, we're completely surrounded.”

“Whoever the Great One is, he's certainly amassed quite an army. I don't think we're going to be able to save Sunnydale.” Willow couldn't help feeling sad. After everything she'd been through it was hard to accept the loss of her home. She tried to push these thoughts from her mind, telling herself that she needed to focus on making sure the people of the town didn't share its fate.

“What about the rest of the world?”

“That's the big question.”

“We need some way of finding some information on the Great One, its weaknesses.” Tara said as she put her hands in her pockets. Finding something there she pulled it out. It was the tickets she'd been given when looking for Willow's essence. Smiling she said, “I think I might have a way.”

***

Giles walked through the passages of the castle reading a large tome, muttering to himself, “There's nothing in here about the Great One. Why has no one heard about him before?”

“Talking to yourself?” A voice said. “That's the first sign of insanity.”

Giles turned. “Ah Kathy, I didn't see you there. How have things been in the infirmary?”

“Not good. Many of the people coming here are too badly hurt to help. With the supplies we've got we've not been able to do much.” Kathy smiled a little. “It's been almost like old times.”

“There's something I wanted to talk to you about. I'm a bit worried about you. Things are very difficult at the moment. I'm worried you're enjoying things too much.”

“Enjoying?” Kathy looked a little confused. “Well, yes I suppose that aside from feeling like I'm heading towards my second nervous breakdown, I am enjoying all this.”

“But you seemed to be having fun.”

Kathy looked annoyed. “Yes, that is what is known as putting a brave face on things.”

“I see. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions.”

“Doesn't matter. So have we learnt anything new?”

“Not much no. Nothing I've read tells us much about this Great One. If we don't know what it is, how can we know what its weakness are?”

“If it's not in any of the books is there anywhere else you can go for help? I mean I know you can't call anyone, but maybe you can get help through other means.”

“There have been times when we've gotten information from a group called The Powers That Be, there is a chance...”

“Woah, wait a minute. Back up a bit there. What did you just say?”

“That we got information from The Powers That Be. Why? What's wrong?”

“That's it. That's the name of the deities mentioned on that parchment, the Powers That Be.”

“You're serious?”

“Of course.”

“I mean, you're positive of this.”

“That's what Megan said they were called. Why, what's...” Kathy paused a moment then answered her own question, “Those are the people who want Tara dead.”

“And we know for sure they killed Tara's mother.”

“But you made it sound like they were good guys.”

“That is what we've always thought. I think we should talk to Willow and Tara about this.”

“Right behind you.”

***

As Willow and Tara got the supplies together for the spell, Willow said, “This looks like the nether realm spell.”

“It's based on that spell but I've modified it so it won't require an anchor.”

“Will it have the same affect as the Nether realm spell?” Willow looked hopeful.

Tara smirked slightly, “I'm afraid not.”

“Oh well, it'll probably be better to have a clear head.”

With everything set up they began chanting the words to the spell.

The found themselves in what seemed to be an amusement park.

“This has changed since I was here last,” Tara commented.

“So where's this ride?” Willow asked,

“Over here.” Tara pointed over to a small group of trees.

A group of children passed by them. As they went past the youngest, a sandy haired young boy, shouted, “Hey look, a Dungeons and Dragons ride.”

Willow turned to Tara with a smile.

Tara shook her head, “I don't think we have time.”

Willow sighed. “I suppose you're right.”

They soon found the ride they were looking for. Unlike the rest of the park there was no customers around. The woman Tara had met before was sitting reading a book, her feet propped up on a table.

Noticing them approaching she jumped up and, she ran over to greet them. “Step right up, step right up. Right this way for the most exciting and informative ride you'll ever go on.”

“You don't seem to be very busy,” Willow said.

“Ah well, I did promise you'd be the first to go on it, didn't I? I'm sure business will boom once it has your seal of approval!” She smiled as she said this.

Tara gave the two tickets to the woman, who punched holes in the both before handing them back. She then led them to a car and opened the door for them. As they sat down she said, “Remember to remain seated and to keep your arms within the vehicle at all times while it is moving.” She shut the door before saying, almost as an afterthought, “And try not to hurl.” With that the car started racing down the track.

***

Giles and Kathy found Willow and Tara in a trance. “This is hardly time for them to go gallivanting around the ethereal planes,” Giles complained.

“Uh, there's a note,” Kathy said. She picked it up and read out, “We think we know how to get some information about the great one. We'll be back as soon as possible.” Putting it down again she said, “Maybe they'll find something useful.”

“I just hope they find it before it's too late.”

***

The Great One stood on a platform watching the fires burning round Sunnydale. “Everything is going to plan.”

“What about the Guardian?” His emissary asked.

“Soon she will come to me, then I will kill her.”

“Of course but...”

“You doubt me? There is no reason. I understand now. The reason I haven't detected her is something has kept her weak. Stopped her from reaching her true potential. So I will have no trouble eliminating her. Then there will be nothing that can stop me destroying all life on this pitiful planet.”

WillowRulez: You're right both the PTB and the Great One are in need of a spanking and not in a nice way :smash

Thanks for reading and feedbacking.

About the next story. It's kind of written but I'm having trouble getting enough time to edit it. So I can't give any promises as to when it'll be posted.

ETA: I'm sorry to say it's not looking like I'll be able to get back to this story this year. Hopefully in the new year I'll have some more time and I'll be able to finish it off.

My apologies to everyone who's reading.

Both of you ;-)

The Triple Goddess

Part 1: Maiden

The train came to a halt at a platform. Willow leant against the front looking a little queasy. “I see what she meant about not being sick.”

“Are you going to be okay?” Tara asked. With a mischievous smile she asked, “Do you want me to rub your tummy?”

As they got out they looked around the station. A short distance down the platform there was a pair of large doors. A glowing neon sign above the doors read, 'Maiden'. Next to the doors were a series of vending machines. Tara went to look at the door, while Willow examined the vending machines. Turning back to Tara she said, “As Giles would say, 'bloody hell'!”

“What's wrong?”

“The prices on these things.” Willow waved a hand at one of the vending machines. “You don't really expect to get ripped off in the Nether Realm.”

Tara couldn't help smiling at Willow's disgruntled expression. “No, I don't expect you do. Well this is the only way to go.” Pushing the doors open they stepped through into a dome shaped room, which had a screen running round it.

“Looks like an Imax theatre,” Willow said in an awed tone.

An image started to appear on the screen, then they were standing in a bathroom.

“Well this isn't like Imax,” Willow commented.

There was a young girl sitting on the toilet.

“Uh, hello,” Tara said, wondering why they were there.

“I'm a big girl now,” The girl said.

“Oh hell,” Megan said as she ran into the room, frantically hitting the buttons on a remote. The image disappeared and they were back in the theatre. “Sorry, wrong tape.” Lifting a radio to her mouth she said, “I thought I told you to erase that tape.”

“How did you get here?” Willow asked.

She looked surprised at that question. “How did I get here? More importantly, how did you get here?”

“Uh, we came on that train thing.”

“Well good. I'm glad we sorted that out.” Speaking into the radio again she said, “Just put the right tape on.”

A moment later Willow and Tara were standing on a large plain. There was an occasional bush, but nothing else in sight, the woman had disappeared. The ground started to shake and there was a rumble of something large approaching. It soon came into sight, a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

“Are we safe here?” Tara asked.

“I don't know,” Willow answered, looking for somewhere to hide.

Before the dinosaur could reach them a gigantic worm burst up out of the ground, swallowing whole. The worm came out onto the surface a short while then dove back down into the ground.

Neither Willow or Tara said anything for a while.

“I think that was a true demon,” Willow said finally.

“So we're seeing the past? I mean the really, really distant past. Like prehistoric past,” Tara said.

Before Willow could answer the scenery started moving around them. They raced across the ground, crossing valleys and oceans till they finally came to a forest. They stopped in a small clearing where a woman was chained to a tree. They tried to determine how old she was but couldn't.

“That's the woman from my mom's drawings,” Tara said. “I'm sure of it.”

A large horned figure, with cloven hooves crashed into the clearing.

“Another demon,” Willow said,

Ignoring them the demon said to the woman, “So you see Gaia, your attempts to get rid of us have failed.”

“Did he just say Gaia?” Willow asked.

“I think so,” Tara answered.

“I haven't given up yet,” Gaia said to the demon, “I will rid this planet of your scourge.”

The demon just laughed before walking away.

“Okay this is all very interesting and educational,” Willow said, “but why are we seeing it?”

A small female figure came out of the scrub land and walked up to Gaia. Touching the chains she unlocked them.

“What are you doing?” The demon roared.

A bolt of lightning hit the sprite, throwing her backwards. She struck a tree and fell to the ground, not moving.

Gaia rose to her full height, seeming to grow in stature. “I said I would rid the planet of your presence.”

“And just what do you intend to do?”

“I've already done it.”

“Look,” Willow said, pointing off into the distance. There was a column of thick black smoke rising into the sky. They then spotted several other around them. “I think they're volcanoes. If there's enough of them then it'll blanket the aptmosphere with dust, causing a nuclear winter. Well not nuclear really but similar.”

No sooner had Willow said this than the sky started to darken,

The demon they had seen earlier came crashing into view. It seemed to be struggling against something, though they couldn't see what. A translucent light seemed to be sucked out of it, then it's body dissolved. All around this seemed to be happening to other demons.

“They're being pulled back to hell,” Tara said.

Then they saw one demon that seemed to be resisting the pull. It stumbled into a cave and began drawing runes on the walls. As it did the pull on it lessened. It said to itself, “The planet no longer welcomes my kind, but this will change, in time.” Lying down it went to sleep. Then the entrance of the cave collapsed.

Time passed rapidly and the dust began to clear away. As it did so new animals began appearing, including mammals. Then the cave burst open and the demon came out. Now it was only just able to resist the pull back to hell. “No, things have gotten worse!” Spotting a human the demon fell on him, biting him then forcing him to drink the demon's blood. Then the demon let himself be pulled away.

“This is what Giles is always talking about. The last demon infected a human with its blood, creating the first vampire.” Sure enough when night had fallen the human rose up, it's face permanently stuck in the visage of a vampire.

“But why are we seeing this?” Tara asked.

“I don't know. Unless... maybe the Great One is the last demon. Buffy said she'd faced some vampires that were tougher than normal.”

“If they'd been sired by the last demon then they would be,” Tara put in.

“Yes. Does this help us?”

“It was Gaia who got rid of the demons originally, can she help us now?”

“I don't know.” The scenery around them was moving between light and dark as time passed rapidly.

“I guess there's more to see,” Tara said.

***

They found themselves in a small village. They were in the central square, surrounded by wooden houses which had thatched roofs. The door to one of the buildings opened and a young woman walked out, holding a small basket. She laughed at something that was said to her from within the building then, waving to the person inside, she started down the path out of the village.

“I get the feeling we're supposed to follow her,” Willow said.

“Me too,” Tara agreed.

They started down the path, following close behind the woman. “I wonder who this woman is,” Willow said, “I keep getting the feeling I know her.”

“But this looks like several hundred years ago,” Tara pointed out.

“I know, maybe she's an ancestor of someone we know.”

“She could be,” Tara said, though she didn't look convinced.

They hadn't gotten too far out from the village when a young man came running down the path. “Heather! Heather!”

“What is it Douglas?”

“There are monsters in the woods.”

“Monsters, what sort of nonsense is this?”

“Not nonsense, I saw them myself. They killed Hamish.”

“I'll go and have a look.”

“But...”

“Don't fret boy, I'll be careful.”

“You better be Heather Maclay or you'll be in trouble.”

“Well that answers that question,” Willow said, almost to herself.

They followed Heather into the forest. Before they had travelled far they could hear noises from within the forest. Slowing down Heather moved cautiously through the woods. she soon reached a small clearing. Hiding behind a tree she looked into it, where a group of demons were eating a large dog.

“That must be Hamish,” Willow said.

Heather stood up and started to back away, but her foot caught a small twig, snapping it. As the demons turned towards her, Heather turned and ran out of the forest as fast as she could. However the demons were starting to gain on her.

“We can't let them get her,” Tara said.

“But...” Willow started.

Tara was already moving. She grabbed a branch and moved it in the way of the lead demon. It hit the branch and was knocked down. The other demons slowed down and watched the branch with suspicion.

“I don't think they can see us,” Tara said.

“Still we should get moving.” As they chased after Heather Willow said, “You know if we're interacting with the past and not just observing it then you could have caused a paradox.”

“I think my ancestor being eaten would have been a worse paradox.”

“But we know she would have escaped.”

“So I was obviously supposed to intervene to save her. So really I just ensured that history took the course it was supposed to. A predestination paradox, if you will.”

“How do you know about that?”

“Xander's been getting me reading science fiction.”

Suddenly it was night time and they were in a small clearing just outside the woods. “What just happened?” Willow asked.

“I guess this is the next scene.”

Heather was sitting cross legged, in front of a small fire. she picked up a small bunch of dried herbs and threw them on the fire. “With these herbs I call on the Goddess.”

“She's a witch?” Willow asked.

“I guess so.”

Heather threw some seeds on the fire, “With these seeds I call on the Goddess.” She picked a knife up and ran it along the back of her wrist. Turning her wrist she let some of the blood drip onto the fire. “With this blood I call on the Goddess.”

For a few moments nothing happened. Then a strange calm settled over the area and the sky seemed to darken. Everything went dark a moment. When they could see again there was a tall, red haired woman standing the opposite side of the fire.

“I...” Heather stopped, obviously surprised that this had worked.

“You weren't expecting to see me were you?”

“Are you the Goddess?”

The woman laughed, a rich melodic sound. “No child, I am lamb and the wolf, the sparrow and the hawk, the tree and meadow. I am the spirit of this planet.”

“Gaia,” Tara whispered.

“She looks different from before,” Willow said.

“There are demons,” Heather quickly explained. “If they're not stopped they'll kill everyone in my village.”

The woman nodded, “Demons can be a nuisance. I can give you the strength to deal with them. There is a price though.”

“Isn't there always?” Willow muttered.

“What is it?” Heather asked.

“Like I said demons can be a nuisance and not just here, pretty much everywhere. This planet needs... I need a little help protecting myself. I mean there's the Slayer but there's only so much...”

Heather looked confused at this. “The what?”

The woman waved the question away. “It doesn't matter. The point is from this day on it'll be your responsibility to protect the planet from any threats, demonic or otherwise.”

“How?”

“The power will be available to you when you need it most.”

“Then I...”

“Before you agree, there's one other thing. This won't just be your responsibility, but also your daughter's and your daughter's daughter's and so on till the world no longer needs a guardian.”

“I see.” Heather considered this a moment then said, “I'll do it.”

“So Heather had this power for fighting demons,” Willow said.

“It looks that way.”

“But if it passed down to all her female ancestors then...” Before Willow could finish the thought everything went dark.

***

They were standing in a large chamber. In the centre of the room there was a glowing sphere. It was showing a young, blonde haired, woman, surrounded by tall scaly demons. Her eyes were glowing blue and she was firing lightning bolts at the demons.

Willow and Tara suddenly realised there was shadows moving round them. They tried to see what it was but couldn't make them out.

“The guardian is a nuisance. She will ruin millennia of work.”

“Indeed. She has already wrecked several projects. Projects that we had spent a long time bringing to fruition. Can't we control her in the same way we control the Slayer?”

“No. We have tried, but she has proved resistant to coercion. She will have to be eliminated and the line ended.”

“Perhaps not. If we could come up with a way to control her then she would prove invaluable.”

“But what about the damage she'll do till then? The risk is too great.”

“Well then we need to remove that risk. Not by eliminating the Guardian, but by neutralising her powers.”

“How exactly do we do that?”

“Simple, we make her afraid of her powers. The Guardian has always been a very moral woman. What if we can make her think her powers are evil, demonic in nature. Then she'll be afraid to use them and won't be a threat any more.”

“Goddess,” Tara moaned.

“Tara?”

“This is it. This is how the demon myth got started.”

The scene faded away and they were back in the theatre. Megan was sitting a short distance away watching them.

“So what do you think about it so far? No don't answer, there'll be a customer satisfaction survey at the end of the ride.”

Tara looked at her with a mixture of confusion and hurt.

“I know this isn't easy and I'm not showing it to you to hurt you. You need to know who you are, what you can do.”

“I'm the Guardian,” Tara said. “Whatever that means.”

“Yes. It means you have the power to take on the Great One.”

“But I don't have any powers, I mean I can do magic but nothing to take on major demons.”

“Why do you think that is?”

“Because of the demon myth?”

“Partly, but also because your powers will only activate when you will need them.”

“Why does Tara have to be the one to deal with this Great One? To be in danger?” Willow asked.

“When something is wrong, anyone with the ability to put things right has a responsibility to.”

“That's easy for you to say, I mean you're not the one in danger, you're not the one fighting.”

“Well I admit I wasn't living on a hellmouth but if you want danger then try being a gay Iraqi living in the town with the highest BNP and Combat eighteen membership in all of England. Anyway I did fight though, against ignorance and intolerance. In the end it was this search for truth got me killed.”

“What happened?”

“I found out stuff I shouldn't so they,” Megan tapped her forehead, “fried my brain.”

“Who are they?” Tara asked.

Megan cupped her hands together, causing an image of an eye within a circle to appear.

“The people who killed my mother,” Tara said. “Who are they?”

There was no answer since Megan had disappeared. A light came on across the room from them. It was illuminating a door which had a sign on it saying, “Mother.”

JujuDeRoussie: Hi, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you're enjoying the story.

Oh I have something to say: Tara's Mother's name is first Samantha, then Melissa and then Emily... is this mean something?

Um, it means the writer has a terrible memory and kept forgetting what he had called Tara's mother :blush I will issue a decree, from henceforth Tara's mother will be known as Samantha Maclay.

Thanks for reading.

The Triple Goddess

Part 2: Mother

“Well I guess that we're supposed to go through here,” Willow said as they walked towards it. The door opened revealing a brightly lit corridor. Stepping out into it Willow said, “Well this looks nice.”

“Yes, nice carpet.” They looked up as a couple of security guards approached, but they just walked straight past, not seeming to notice either woman.

“So where are we.”

Tara pointed at one of the doors, “I know that name.”

“Oh hell,” Willow said.

Holland Manners
Special Operations.

“So we're in Wolfram and Hart?” Willow said, sounding anxious. She'd heard a lot of bad stories about this place. “What are we doing there?”

“Maybe we'll find out in here,” Tara indicated the door.

“Though isn't he dead?”

“Maybe this is still the past.” They entered the room and found Holland there going over some paperwork.

A moment later his intercom sounded and a voice said, “Sir there's something here to see you.”

“Tara,” Willow pointed at the door where a shadow was moving into the room. Once it was fully in the room it started to stretch upwards, growing into a cloaked figure.

“Do you have it?” The thing spoke with a strange flat tone, which didn't contain any inflection or emotion.

“It's right here.” He opened a drawer up and pulled out a small box. He took out a gold necklace and handed it to the creature. Tara gasped as she saw it.

“Is that...?” Willow asked.

Tara just nodded.

The creature then shrunk back down into a shadow and left.

“Maybe we should follow it,” Willow suggested. When they got outside there was no sign of the creature. Also the colour of the walls and carpets had changed. “I think we might be in a different time now.”

“So those eye people, they're Wolfram and Hart?” Tara speculated, “I guess that explains why they don't like the Guardian, why didn't that woman just tell us that?”

“Maybe she likes being mysterious. Though didn't they say they were using the Council to control the Slayer? I mean I've never like the Watchers Council but I'd never have suspected them of working with Wolfram and Hart.”

“Maybe we'll find out more later.”

Willow nodded, then pointed at the door. “Look.” The sign now read “Lillah Morgan”

“So this is after he was killed by Darla,” Tara said.

“Well then shall we go in?”

They entered the office and found a young, dark haired woman looking into a tall mirror. Rather than her reflection they could see in that a tall man. She said, “Preparations are well under way. We have a cult indoctrinated to our cause working on it. They should be ready to start the ritual soon.”

“Why are you helping me?” The man asked.

“You've been looking for a way back here for a long time. We thought you deserved to get a chance.”

“You have my gratitude.”

“It's our pleasure.” Lillah bowed a moment, “Great One.”

“That's him,” Willow said. “What did she mean about indoctrinating the cult? I thought they were all about ending everyone's suffering.”

“Maybe they were using that to manipulate them.”

The image from the mirror vanished and Lillah turned to look over some papers. After a while there was a knock at the door. A young man came in and said, “We have a problem. The cult are trying to resurrect Rack. To use in the ritual.”

Lillah frowned as she considered the news. “Can we stop the resurrection?”

“Yes, we can block it.”

Lillah nodded then picked the phone up. After dialling a number she said, “Are you certain the Guardian is going to be resurrected? But you don't know who by? Okay then.” She hung up and said to the young man, “Okay then block the resurrection. We have to be certain they use the witch for their ritual.”

The man nodded then hurried out.

Willow turned to Tara. “Guardian? That's you?”

“So Wolfram and Hart wanted to make sure I was used for the ritual. Why me?”

“I don't know. I mean they wanted you dead, right? None of this is making any sense.”

“It's okay. We'll figure this out.”

Willow nodded, though she still looked upset. “Sorry, it's just getting to me a bit.”

“It's okay. I think we're both a bit freaked by this.”

***

They found themselves back in the large chamber. This time the sphere was showing images of Sunnydale, shrouded in darkness. “So am I right in thinking that these are the senior partners?”

“I guess they must,” Tara said.

“The Great One is almost ready to begin the next stage of its plans,” a voice said.

“Before that it must fight the Guardian. When it kills her the spell that brought it here will end, returning it to hell.”

“I guess they don't have much confidence in me,” Tara said.

“That's because they don't know you.”

“What about if she beats the Great One? The assassin that was sent has betrayed us.”

“We have other measures in place.”

“Assassin?” Willow said. “I guess they mean Faith.”

Tara nodded then said, “What I don't get is why go to all this trouble. Why summon the Great One if they just want it to be banished again?”

“I don't know.”

“What about the prophecy the Guardian wrote?” A new voice asked.

“Prophecy? I don't remember writing any prophecy,” Tara said.

“It must be prevented. What about Whistler?”

“He seems to have disappeared.”

“I thought Spike said Whistler worked for the Powers That Be,” Willow said.

“We only need to keep Angel away. Maybe Cordelia.”

“Our link to her has weakened since her return to Earth.”

Tara had been standing quietly, thinking about what she'd been hearing. A concerned expression had formed as an idea occurred to her. “Willow, this might sound crazy but what if these are the Powers That Be?”

“But I thought they were the senior partners.”

Tara nodded. “Maybe they're both.”

“But...” Willow wanted to argue this, but couldn't think of any way to refute it.

The shadowy figures around them faded from view and a doorway appeared. Above it was the word, crone.

The Triple Goddess

Part 3: Crone

“So another door,” Willow mused. “The last two have been past and present...”

“Present?” Tara looked skeptical. “Didn't the last one start ten years ago?”

“Okay so it's a rather broad definition of present. Anyway, what I was saying was I've got a feeling this one's going to be the future.”

“Only one way to find out.” Tara opened the door and they stepped through.

Willow found herself in a graveyard. “This looks like...” Willow stopped when she realised that Tara wasn't with her. Then she saw the gravestone in front of her.

Tara Maclay
You are light
1980 – 2002

Willow noticed Buffy walking up beside her. “How are you holding up?”

“It hurts so much. I don't know how I can go on.”

“I know Will, but it'll get easier.”

Willow absently wiped the tears from her face. “When? When will it get easier?”

***

Tara stepped through the door into a kitchen that she didn't realised. “Where do you...” Tara stopped when she noticed Willow wasn't with her. “Willow?”

A moment later Willow burst through a different door, looking flustered.

“Willow, what's wrong?”

“What's wrong? They're going to be here in an hour and nothing's ready. The night's going to be a disaster.”

Tara took Willow by her shoulders. “Okay, Willow you need to calm down. Everything's almost ready and we've got plenty of time to do the rest. Everything is going to be fine.”

Willow nodded, calming herself down. “You're right. I'm just getting worked up over nothing.” She then started to panic again, looking wildly round the room. “Where are the plates?”

“I'll get them.”

As Tara was going through into the dining room Willow asked, “How do you think the other's will react, to our news?”

“I'm sure they'll be happy for us. They're our friends after all.” Grabbing the stack of plates Tara headed back to the kitchen.

***

Willow was getting out of her car as Buffy approached her. “I've got bad news Will,” Buffy said.

“Good morning to you too Buffy.”

“Sorry. Good morning Will. Now, you'll want to see this.” Buffy held the front page of the newspaper up.

“More demon sightings. I guess now everyone knows they're not blind to them any more.”

“Yeah, the Great One really let the cat out of the bag. Anyway I meant the other story.”

Willow scanned across the page. When she found the story she had to reread it a couple of times before she could believe her eyes. “But Warren's dead. Dead people can't be education secretary. How is this possible?”

“I don't know but I've got an idea who's behind it.”

“You mean the power's who jerk us around?”

“And we have a winner.”

“So why do they want him alive and in the cabinet?”

“That's the big question.”

***

Tara was surprise to find herself in another unfamiliar kitchen, completely different from the one she'd just left. Also the plates she'd been carrying had vanished. “How did I get here?” She wondered out loud. Turning back she saw the room she'd just been in had also changed.

“Mama, when is mom coming back.” A small red haired girl came running into the room.

Tara crouched down and caught the girl in her arms. “Soon, little girl, soon.”

As if on cue the door opened and Willow came in.

“Have you got it Mom? Have you?”

“Was I supposed to be getting something?” Willow asked.

“Mom!” The girl whined.

“Of course I've got it.” Willow turned to Tara and said, “I've also got some good news. Proposition nine four two was voted down.”

Tara gave a sight of relief. “I knew it would be, but I was worried.”

“I think most gay Americans were worried. You know it's down to you that it was voted down.”

Tara blushed. “I didn't do very much.”

“You did enough.” Willow kissed Tara on the cheek then said, “Oh and before I forget there's some more news. Mr Former secretary of education Warren Mears has been committed at a psychiatric facility. It seems he's been telling everyone that demons exist.”

***

Willow found herself sitting in the living room. The TV was showing the news.

“Now we have live footage of the attack on the Whitehouse.” The picture changed to show large grey skinned creatures moving along the lawn of the Whitehouse. “We do not yet know what these things are. Reports say that they seemed to be impervious to any weapons fire. We will bring you more news as...” He stopped, listening to something in his earpiece. “This breaking news just in. Airforce one... has been attacked and destroyed. The president... the president is dead.”

Willow was standing in front of a whiteboard with the names of all the members of the cabinet on it. The president, vice president and a few others had been crossed off. Willow glanced at a newspaper story detailing a demon attack. She turned back to the board and crossed off the Speaker of the house and the Attorney General.

Willow was still standing at the board, but she had the feeling that some time had passed. this time she crossed off the President pro tempore, Secretary of defence and Secretary of Commerce.

More time had passed and Willow crossed off more names. Then more. Till there were only two names left. The Secretary of Homeland Security and The Secretary of Education, Warren Mears.

Willow stepped back trying to remember who was next in the line of succession. Of course she knew the answer to that, there was no way she couldn't, she just didn't want to know it.

***

Tara found herself sitting in a park. Their daughter Hazel was playing a short distance away.

“She certainly is a bundle of energy,” Buffy, who was sat next to her, pointed out.

Tara smiled. “I think she gets that from Willow.”

“Speaking of Willow, how's she liking the new job?”

“She's really enjoying it. I mean the work is challenging, she seems to be spending most of her time there,” as she said this Tara couldn't help sighing.

“What's wrong? You haven't had a fight have you?”

“No, not a fight. More a disagreement. I just get so insecure sometimes.”

“Tara, no one's perfect, not even you.”

“Buffy,” Tara said sharply, indicating Hazel who had stopped running around and was standing watching them both,

“Uh, I mean ignore your crazy aunt Buffy, Hazel, of course your mother's perfect.”

***

Willow was again in front of the television as Warren was sworn into office.

“I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Suddenly everyone seemed to freeze, except for Warren who turned to look at Willow. “I also do solemnly swear that I will kill you Willow Rosenberg. My only regret is I can't get at your bitch lover. Oh well, the pain you put me through will be nothing to what I'm going to do to you.”

***

Willow was walking down the corridors of a building. She stopped at one of the doors and cast a spell, opening it. Kathy was sat on a narrow bed in the room. She was leant against the wall with her eyes closed. Her face was pale and she seemed to be having some trouble breathing. Opening her eyes she squinted at the entrance before saying, “Hey Willow, what are you doing here?”

“Kathy, you look terrible! What have they done to you?”

“They stopped giving me my insulin a while ago.”

“Those bastards.” She went to help Kathy up. “Come on we need to get going.”

Kathy shook her head. “I think it's too late for that.”

“For both of us,” Willow said. “But I'm not going to let you die here.”

Willow helped Kathy up and Kathy leant against her as they walked out.

“Where are the guards?”

“Left, I guess they knew what's coming.”

As they left the prison Kathy looked round at how empty everything was. The who city seemed to be deserted. She finally figured out what was going on. “This place is going to get nuked isn't it?”

Willow nodded. “A couple of minutes now.”

“You should have just left, why waste time getting me out?”

“Like I said I couldn't let you die in there. Besides, where would I go?”

“I guess this is it for humanity.”

“No, I think some people will survive. I don't envy them though.”

“When the bomb hits, will it...”

“We're close. It'll be quick.”

As she said this there was a flash of light from the centre of the city.

***

Willow opened her eyes to find herself back in the theatre. Seeing Tara nearby she threw her arms round her. “Oh goddess Tara.”

“Willow what's wrong?”

Willow looked at Tara and tried to explain what had happened, but all that came out was, “You... You...”

“Had something happened to me where you were?”

“You were dead,” Willow finally said.

“It's okay Willow. I'm alright. We were just seeing things that might happen.”

“What about you? Were we both okay in your visions?”

Tara smiled. “Yes, we had a daughter.”

“I'm glad yours was nicer.”

“Though,” Tara frowned. “Warren was alive. I don't know how.”

“He was in mine as well. He was made President, then he started world war three.”

“He got committed in mine.”

“Yours is definitely the better one.”

“Hi,” A voice said.

Turning they both said, “You!”

“Uh, I guess you don't really want to see me,” Megan said. “I can understand that. Like I said, you weren't shown those things to hurt you. You need to know what the powers are up to. The Great One is the pebble that starts the avalanche. With knowledge of demons widespread paranoia will grow till war is inevitable.”

“Why start a nuclear war? What do they gain from Killing almost everyone?”

“I guess there's getting to be too many of us, we're getting too unruly. So they're going to thin down our numbers a bit. Which will make us easier to control and to mould into what ever image they see fit.”

“They have to be stopped.”

“I'm afraid stopping the Great One will be easy compared to that.”

“Why are you helping?” Willow asked.

”Let me tell you a story. It started about three weeks ago. I had only been dead a little while but was already pretty sure things weren't going as they ought to. I was also fairly certain it was down to some texts I'd translated. Anyway I was approached by Hecate who asked me to put this all together, to help guide you along.”

“We still don't know why she's interested in us,” Willow said. “She said she owes someone a favour.”

“But we don't know whom,” Tara finished.

“That would be me,” A voice said from behind them.

Spinning round the first thing Willow thought was that the woman looked like Tara. She found out why as Tara said, “Mom!”

“Hello dear girl. And you must be Willow. It's a pleasure to finally meet you.”

“And you,” Willow said. “Forgive me for asking me this, but how have you got a goddess or three owing you favours?”

“Well when I tried to escape with Tara I prayed to Hecate to help me. They failed and we were caught as a result. They told me that to make up for it they would do me one favour. When I found out that you had died but were being returned in order to take on the Powers, I asked them to help you.” She paused a moment then said, “Tara, I'm so sorry.”

“What for?”

“If I hadn't believed my father's lies then I could have spared you so much pain.”

“Mom, it's not your fault. It's not Dad's, or even Granddad's. The only people to blame are the Powers. They corrupted a whole town just to keep us under their thumb.”

“Because they're afraid of you,” Megan said. Tara jumped a little. Haven gotten caught up in seeing her mother again she'd almost forgotten about her.

“And that is perhaps the thing I'm finding hardest to believe.”

“Tara. After you beat the Great One, you'll have to make a choice. I can't tell you anything but I know you'll make the right one. For both you and for Willow.”

No sooner had Tara's mother said that than Megan snapped her fingers and Willow and Tara both disappeared.

Samantha looked over at Megan and said, “So what is Hecate giving you for all this?”

“Ever since I died I've felt different. I don't know who I am any more. Hecate is going to help with that.”

Samantha shook her head saying, “I'm not sure even a Goddess can manage that.”

***

Willow and Tara found themselves back in the amusement park. A short distance away a young girl was dragging her mother along. “I want to go on the Triple Goddess,” She whined. “It's been approved by Willow and Tara.”

“Okay, this is just getting too surreal,” Willow said.

“Agreed,” Tara replied. “Let's go home.”

***

Tara opened her eyes to find herself back in the castle. Willow was sitting opposite her and Giles and Kathy were nearby with concerned expressions on their faces.

“Of all the foolish things to do!” Giles was ranting. “Do you have any idea how dangerous what you did is?”

“Uh, pardon me,” Kathy started. “But maybe we should save the lectures for when the world isn't about to end.”

“Fine. So did you find anything out?”

Tara looked at Willow a moment then said, “You could say that.”

Hello Justin!

It's great I hadn't to wait too long Thank You :-D

“Tara. After you beat the Great One, you'll have to make a choice. I can't tell you anything but I know you'll make the right one. For both you and for Willow.”

Oh... I imagine this will be a really difficult choice... erf

“Of all the foolish things to do!” Giles was ranting. “Do you have any idea how dangerous what you did is?”

Dying here without any idea how to defend themselves or dying while they're searching answers... lol! I liked Kathy's answer

maybe we should save the lectures for when the world isn't about to end

Good update ;-)

Again take your time but I will not be upset if you update soon ;-)

imjustme: I'm glad you enjoyed the story. Thanks for reading and leaving feedback.

JujuDeRoussie: I'm glad you liked the last update :D

Regarding the posting schedule, I had written the last three stories a while ago but I've been having trouble getting them to the point where they're ready to post. The last story was the hardest due to the surreality of the story and the fact that it's mainly exposition. So now that I'm over that bump it should be a lot easier from now on. I don't foresee (touch wood) any delays in posting.

Gaia's Guardian

Chapter 1

The Scoobies all gathered once again in the banquet hall. While they were waiting for everyone to arrive Willow and Tara discussed the best way to explain what they'd found out. They realised that some of the others might have a problem (“cough Buffy cough,” Willow said) with their plan.

Once everyone had gotten settled, they started with their explanation. As they'd expected it wasn't long before they were interrupted.

“Let me get this straight,” Xander said. “Because I'm having a bit of trouble getting my head around it. You went on some sort of mystical amusement ride and found out how to beat the Great One?”

“That's pretty much it,” Willow replied. She had a feeling they wouldn't believe her, she was having trouble believing it herself.

“Okay enough of the chit chat. What do I need to do?” Buffy asked.

“Um, actually you can't beat him,” Willow said.

This didn't sit well with Buffy. “Then what, we just give up?”

Tara raised her hand, saying, “Actually, I have to fight him.”

Everyone turned to Tara with varying levels incredulity.

Buffy blinked then said, “Could you run that past me again?”

“I'm the one who has to fight the Great One. Buffy remember how he thought you were the Guardian?”

Buffy just nodded, not looking as though she was liking where this was headed.

“Hundreds of years ago a woman was given the power to fight demons and other threats to nature. That woman was Heather Maclay, my ancestor.”

“So you've inherited her powers? Why haven't we seen them before?”

“The power only becomes available when it's needed. The greater the need, the greater the power.”

“But you've needed it before, I mean it would have been useful against Glory.”

“The demon myth. The Powers That Be were afraid of the guardian, so they used the demon myth to keep us weak,”

“Hold on a minute, the Powers are good guys!” Buffy protested.

“Actually not so much,” Kathy said.

“We believe it was the Powers that killed Tara's mother,” Giles added.

“Oh. But how do you know it isn't a trick? Who told you all this?”

“We didn't get her name,” Willow admitted, knowing it didn't help their case.

“Buffy, I know this doesn't sound plausible, but I know it's all true.”

“So it has to be you who fights the Great One,” Buffy said slowly. “but that doesn't mean you can't have some back up does it?”

“Nope, the more backup the better.”

“Thanks Buffy,” Willow said.

“Hey, it's what a Slayer's for.”

“So now we just need a plan for finding and getting to this 'Great One',” Faith said.

Before they could get started on this Jenna came running in. “Hey guys, you really ought to come and see this.”

***

Rushing outside they immediately saw what the problem was. A pair of tall demons were standing just outside the shield. They were holding staffs and chanting loudly. A small hole had opened in the shield and it was slowly growing.

“Do you think you can stop them from breaking through the barrier?” Buffy asked.

“We can try,” Willow answered. She, Tara and Amy joined hands and started chanting. The hole stopped growing then started to shrink.

Two more demons appeared and the hole again started to grow, though slower than before.

“I think we should start getting everyone ready to defend themselves,” Faith suggested.

“Agreed,” Buffy said, “Willow try to buy us as much time as you can.”

***

They hurried through the castle gathering together anyone who could fight. They led everyone to the main hall, then started arming them.

While the others were doing this, Dawn kept an eye on what was going on outside. “You'd better hurry. I don't think they can hold the demons out for much longer.”

“We're almost ready,” Buffy said. Turning to everyone she said, “Okay you have to decapitate vampires. Demons are easier to kill. Other than that, good luck everyone.”

“Well that was inspiring,” Faith said.

“We don't have time for great long speeches.”

Once everyone was ready they marched out and prepared themselves for the coming attack.

***

As soon as the hole grew wide enough the demons started coming through it. The magical demons continued working on increasing the size of the hole, so more demons could move through. They hadn't moved far through it when Buffy, Faith and the others moved to intercept them.

As they drew back Willow said, “We should be doing something.”

“I don't think we can do much to help here,” Tara said. “We need to stop the Great One.”

“How do we get to it?”

“Well most the demons are round the front, so it shouldn't be too hard to sneak out the back.”

“Unless the Great One is amongst the demons out there.”

“It isn't. You remember how I said I felt something out there, drawing me to it. It's the Great One.”

“What do you want me to do?” Amy had been so quiet during the conversation that the others had almost forgotten that she was there.

“Can you help the people here, hold off the demons?” Tara asked.

“Sure there's a couple of spells I want to try out.”

“We should get going,” Willow said.

There first stop was the small room being used as an armoury. Tara looked at the weapons a while then grabbed a sword. “This'll do it.” She strapped the sword to her hip as they headed to the rear of the castle.

***

Tara was right about there not being many demons round the back of the castle. The few who were there weren't paying much attention and were easy to slip past.

They weaved there way through the streets of Sunnydale, an eerie silence around them. The shields around the castle blocked most of the noises from the battle.

As they drew closer to their destination Willow realised where they were heading. “The Magic Box?” Willow said, “Why here?”

“I don't know, something just drew me here.”

“Oh, I'm not doubting you,” Willow said quickly, “It's just Anya's going to be angry if her shop gets messed up again.”

“Don't worry, I'll be careful to not damage her shop while I save the world.”

“That's okay then.”

Entering the shop they quickly looked around. “He doesn't seem to be here,” Willow said,

“I guess that gives us a chance to get ready,” Tara said, “Maybe we can make some room...”

Tara stopped at the sound of the door opening. “Hello Guardian,” A voice said.

Gaia's Guardian

Chapter 2

Buffy found herself surrounded by a pair of vampires and a green scaled demon. The demon tried to grab her but she twirled out of its reach before kicking it away. She ducked under a swing from one of the vampires. As she straightened she staked the other.

Spinning further she grabbed the demon and spun it's head around. She turned back to the remaining vampire, in time to see Faith driving a short sword through its neck.

“Do you have to keep butting into my fights?” Buffy demanded.

“In case you haven't noticed things aren't going too well for us. We don't have time for niceties.” A vampire jumped at her back, knocking her forward. Faith threw the vampire to the ground and Buffy staked it. “See B? Teamwork.”

Buffy shook her head as she muttered, “Faith's lecturing me about teamwork? What is the world coming to?”

A short distance away Xander was about to attack a demon when he heard something behind him. Spinning round he saw a vampire frozen behind. “Huh?”

“You're welcome,” Amy said.

“Hey Amy thinks she's Phoebe Halliwell.”

“Piper,” Amy corrected.

“What?”

“Phoebe has premonitions, it's Piper who freezes things.”

“Can you discuss television when we're not fighting for our lives?” Anya asked them both.

One of the defenders, a young woman, was hit by a vampire, who then bit into her neck. Buffy pulled the vampire away, shoving a stake through its heart as she did so. Grabbing the woman, Buffy handed her to another defender. “Get her back to the castle.”

“There are more coming,” Someone called.

Looking out beyond the shield Buffy saw there was another group approaching. “Do I look like I need this?” Buffy asked no one in particular.

***

Tara and the Great One circled each other looking out for any openings. Tara couldn't believe she was doing this. She had never used a sword before and here she was about to engage in a sword fight with a pure demon.

“Oh the Powers were very clever,” The Great One said.

“How do you figure that?” Tara asked.

“Making sure you were used to summon me. So if I kill you, I'll be banished.”

“Fancy that,” Tara said.

“Pity I can incapacitate you without killing you.”

“You'll find that harder than you think,” Willow said.

“You have no part in this,” The Great One gestured and Willow was thrown out of the shop. “Now it is just us.”

Tara glanced outside to make sure Willow was okay before saying, “Your arrival was arranged by Wolfram and Hart.”

The Great One nodded. “They gave me this chance.”

A moment later he was running at Tara, swinging his sword as he ran. Tara stepped to one side, moving her sword as she did so to block his blow. She shoved her sword forcing him back. He swung again, but the blow was again blocked. With his next thrust she knocked his sword to one side, before slashing at his left side. All the while she wondered how this was possible. Had she somehow inherited the skills of her ancestors?

The Great One quickly backed away saying, “You're not as weak as I thought.”

“You're as stupid as I thought,” Tara answered.

“Petty insults, are beneath you.”

“It's the truth. Otherwise, you would have realised that Wolfram and Hart and the Powers are the same people.”

“Now you're speaking nonsense. Hoping to confuse me? It won't work.”

“I was shocked too. It's simple really, The Powers control the light, Wolfram and Hart control the dark. Complete control.”

“Then why have us fighting?”

“To keep us weak and dependent on them.”

“You lie!” The Great One ran at Tara again.

Tara ran forwards, knocking his blow aside and cutting him across the arm. As she stopped she felt a stabbing pain in her arm, she saw her arm had been cut. Before she could say anything she heard the sound of fighting from outside.

“Ah, some of my followers have found the redhead.”

“Willow!”

“If you want to save her, I suggest you stop the bantering and get to fighting.”

Tara nodded and charged him. She swung her sword at him, only for him to catch it in the guard of his sword and sent it flying across the room.

“I knew concern for her would weaken you.” She walked towards Tara, as she backed away. “I think first I will cut your arms off.”

He swung at Tara, but she rolled out of the way. He swung again, but she managed to avoid the swing.

“You're tiring,” He said.

Tara looked round for her sword. She saw it was on the other side of the room. Tara threw her arm up and the sword came flying towards her, slicing through his chest. He fell to his knees, a strange purple liquid coming out of his mouth.

“Do you mind if I borrow this? Thanks.” She pulled the Great One's sword out of his hand and swung it back.

The Great One looked Tara in the eyes. “Inconceivable.”

Tara swung the sword, taking the Great One's head off. As his body dissolved she said, “You keep using that word, I do not think that it means what you think it means.”

Tara lent against the sword, trying to get her breath back. She looked up as the door opened, relieved to see that it was Willow.

“Tara, are you okay?”

Tara just nodded. Willow ran over and hugged her.

“What about you?” Tara asked. “I heard fighting outside.”

“Fine. Some demons attacked but I was able to hold them off. They left suddenly, I guess when you killed the Great One.” Willow looked at the Great One's remains, “So that's it. It's over?” Looking outside Willow frowned. “Why is it still dark?”

“I guess it must be night again.”

“I guess that's why I'm so tired,” Willow said. She punctuated the comment with a yawn. “It's been a long day.”

“And it's not over yet, I'm afraid.”

“You mean the Powers that Be and their war?”

Tara nodded.

Willow's eyes widened with shock as she looked past Tara. “Tara!”

Tara turned to where Willow was looking and saw a figure appearing. At first it was a ghostly form which she couldn't make out. Then as it solidified, she gasped, “Mom?”

“Tara, I'm here for you.”

Stepping away from Willow, Tara said, “I did it, I beat the Great One.”

“I know. I saw it. Now you have to come with me.”

“What? Why?”

“Because it is your time. Don't you see you were returned to defeat the Great One. Now that you have, you can take your place in Paradise.”

“So that's it? I just come here to defeat this monster for you then I have to leave?”

“No, not just that.” Samantha nodded towards Willow, “This is your chance to do what you couldn't
before, to say goodbye.”

Nodding Tara turned and walked back to Willow.

Willow was crying as she said, “No Tara, you can't go. I can't live without out you.”

Cupping Willow's cheek Tara said, “Willow, I'm not going anywhere.” She then walked back to her mother.

“What's wrong?”

“When we met in the nether realm you said I'd have a choice to make, but I'd make the right choice.”

Samantha gave Tara a benign smile. “Of course. I trust you.”

Tara nodded. She raised her sword, and swinging it in an arc, she cut her mother's head off.

okay. so...WOW. wow is a good word. i'm glad it was invented. i just spent the last two days rereading the entire thread. it's amazing. so, i'm wondering why tara cut off her mother's head, but i'm hoping it's b/c it wasn't really her mother. maybe a demon too. or, perhaps the real great one? or i dunno. i'm not good at figuring stuff out so i'll just wait for the next update. well awesome story lines!!

Hello!

It was a little fast... but it's not over, is it? I mean there is still the Powers That Be and Wolfram and Hart...
Even if I was expecting a longer battle, I liked this chapter :-)
