This was so sweet. Willow’s absentminded collision upstairs while Ira and Tara waited below, was just *so* Willow! The gentle and unconditional love between Willow and her father was also very touching. I liked that upon first meeting Tara, Ira maintained parental detachment. You didn’t have him succumb to automatically ‘knowing’ that Tara was ultra special and therefore exempt from scrutiny. Tara was simply his daughter’s date, and no matter who showed up at that door, they were destined for that important, pointed and necessarily bit of parental information. This Quotable was a lovely reminder of how nice it is to be cared for in ways that allows one to grow and flourish. I look forward to #5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11…!

Awww... how totally cute! I love the list of rules for dating the teenage daughter. I always keep them in mind when meeting the parents. :D

Willow: Hey Buff. One more thing. Buffy: Yeah? Willow: I’m gay. Buffy: Okay, Will. Xander owes me ten bucks.

Quotable 5

Postby MellindraX » Mon Aug 08, 2005 9:11 pm

I'm aware that the last time I posted to this series it was more than a year and a half ago, as well as being on a different board. My series has returned, however, with an installment I like. I hope you agree, and I hope people forgive me my long absence.

Because of my absence, I'll recap the idea behind this series. Basically, each installment is independent of the others. Each is inspired by a different quotation, stated at the beginning of the fic. If you have any quotes you'd like me to consider, please include them in a comment.

Quotable #5
Title: Beach Babe
Author: MellindraX
Rating: PG

Disclaimer: These characters are owned by Joss and Mutant Enemy unless I created them myself. No copyright infringement intended, just having fun with them, and I promise to put them back with all their limbs.

Summary: Willow and Tara head off to the beach, and have a small discussion.

Notes: This is set immediately before the beach scene of 5.01 [Buffy vs. Dracula]. I'm also returning to writing these characters after a notable break; constructive criticism welcome.

New Year's Resolution members--this would be the women getting ready for that most brutal of all times of year, swimsuit season.
Fortunately, we skinny dip up here in our pond, so swimsuits aren't an issue.

The state of California is framed by the media to be the land of beaches, sun, and hot blondes in bikinis. Willow was happy to note she was close to having all three.

“Tara, baby, please come out. The ice is getting all melt-y.” She held a large thermos with both hands, her back bent awkwardly to keep it from hitting the ground, “I don’t think I could get it to the stairs. I’m not thinking about the car.”

The door in front of her remained resolutely shut. A single bead of sweat formed on Willow’s brow and trickled down to her nose, her eyes crossing to follow its descent. The broken heater was making sure her hands were becoming slippery, as well, and the thermos was beginning to threaten her toes.

“Honey?”

“No.” The response was very faint through the door, but she caught it.

“Why not?”
“I look silly in this.”

“I thought we had picked it out together,” Willow remembered their trip to the mall the previous weekend fondly, “and even the clerk said it looked nice on you.”

“Because he wanted me to put it back on.”
“At least he let us pay before kicking us out.”

She knew she was starting to get through when she heard giggling from the room. She wiped one hand quickly on her shorts and grabbed the handle again, giving an opportunity for her other hand to get a better grip on the thermos.

“There’s air conditioning in the car.”

Willow waited patiently when she heard nothing from the other room. It took a moment, but she could see the handle twist and the door pushing open. Tara blushed as she walked out into the hall, consciously meeting Willow’s eyes and maintaining a nervous smile.

She was holding a bright orange, checkered beach towel in one hand and a plastic bag in the other. Her hair was tied back in part, but mostly fell to her shoulders. Her feet were planted closely and her knees were slightly bent, trying to minimize the importance of her outfit. Which, while minimal, was notable as a dark grey, snug fitting, two-piece bathing suit that accentuated every generous curve on Tara’s body.

Willow, for her part, promptly dropped the heavy thermos onto her big toe.

She fell backwards onto her butt as she clutched her foot and found a way to gape and grimace at once. Tara dropped to her knees and put her hands over her girlfriend’s foot.

“Oh, Willow, are you okay?” She looked positively heartbroken as she rubbed the injured foot. Willow just smiled.

“And you said you’d never sweep a girl off her feet.”

Tara ignored the joke, still too concerned. Willow remained firmly planted on the floor.

“Can you stand?” Tara moved Willow’s fingers out of the way and observed the swelling digit cautiously, trying to bend it and watching the other’s face for pain. Finding none, she moved her hands and leaned back to her laurels.

“I’m fine. I think I just bruised my leg when I fell.” Willow said. She bent sideways and twisted her leg, frowning at the blue-brown marks already appearing on her thigh. Tara reached out and rubbed them pityingly.

“I’ll give you a massage when we get home, okay? Make all the aches go away.” She stood up and reached her hand down to Willow, helping her stand. “We should probably take the car, though, for your toe. I don’t think it’s sprained, but…”

“Yeah. Better safe than sorry.” Willow wiped her hands thoroughly and used the edge of her t-shirt on the handle before lifting the thermos again, shifting so that its weight rested on her knee. “I hadn’t planned on walking to the beach with this thing, anyway.”

In two circuits they brought all their things downstairs and out of the dorm building, filling the trunk of the efficient little car that Willow’s parents had given her as a college gift. They got into the front seat and buckled their seat belts. Willow took the wheel and started the car, Tara looking out her window and holding her plastic bag on her lap.

They were out of the UC Sunnydale campus and on to the highway in moments. The radio had been ignored in favor of quiet appreciation, for company and for the brilliantly lit scene of another summer day in pastoral California. Appreciated now, especially, with fall approaching so soon. The road buckled randomly under the car, occasionally, bumping the girls in their seats.

Willow would look over to Tara who would smile and remind her girlfriend to watch the road.

“It’s good, right? That we’re going to hang out with the gang?” Five minutes conversational lull was broken with Willow’s question.

“Should it- should it be bad?” Tara was genuinely curious, now. She realized that she hadn’t heard Willow mention her friends in recent memory; this was significant in a girl who put such importance into her friendships.

“No, of course not.” Her eyes were redirected to the road when Tara pointed at the windshield, “I was just thinking, recently, the past few days, that maybe you didn’t like them. Or, you felt uncomfortable around them. I just assumed that you would get along fine, never considering all the awkward you might get: lesbian-izer of Willow and general unknown. It didn’t occur to me before that you might not like each other naturally, either.”

“Willow, your friends are very nice. Maybe I don’t know them well enough yet, but that’s why it’s good we’re going to spend some time with them today.” Tara fiddled with her plastic bag, “We’ll spend some time with them at the beach, and I can get to know them.”

“Right.”

Tara was still playing with her bag, opening it and closing it randomly.

“Do they really think that I’m the ‘lesbian-izer of Willow’?”
“What? You mean, are they angry with you? Because they so wouldn’t do anything like-“

“The road, honey.” Tara reminded her politely.

“Right. They wouldn’t be angry with you. Or, or think you’re some evil warlock person. Anya said you might be trying to corrupt me and make me into a demon with sinister lesbian sex spells, but we ignored her.”

“Oh, well…” Tara said as one of her hands rummaged through her bag purposefully, “If one of them is worried- I know that she, uh, isn’t listened to as much. But shouldn’t I be safe? I want to make a good impression. I want your friends to be okay with me.” She pulled a pair of loose white pants out of the bag, “I’m just going to put these on. So I’m not the half-dressed girl after the girl.”

“Tara…”
“Road.”

Willow turned her head but remained frowning, slightly. Tara already had one leg into the trousers when Willow spoke.

“Tara, are you actually worried about my friends’ judgment of our relationship?” Willow asked, “Or are you worried about their judgment?”

“Excuse me?”

“You just-“ Willow stopped, and sighed. “You don’t feel comfortable in a bathing suit.”

“No.”
“You didn’t feel comfortable about bathing suits when I dragged you out to buy them.”
“No.”
“The only reason you let me do that is because you didn’t want to talk about that.”
“Yes.”

“Tara, you let me be a terrible girlfriend.” Willow said, “I was awful, throwing you about all willy-nilly and doing as I pleased with your wardrobe. And our plans! I’m bringing you out here on a Saturday to hang out with my friends, when you could be reading or studying or hanging out with your friends. I wasted your time on something you don’t want to wear in public. What was I thinking; I-“

“Willow, please.” Tara interrupted her, sounding distressed. “I didn’t want to make you unhappy. You seemed to enjoy buying this,” She gestured to her still-visible bikini top, “And I had a good time shopping. It wasn’t a waste.”

“It was.” Willow was adamant, sticking to her point. “You’ll never wear that again and I made you feel self-conscious. I’m a sucky girlfriend.”

“Succulent.” Tara diverted, grinning with the comment.

“Oh, no you don’t.” Willow said harshly, but grinning just as widely. “You’re not changing the subject. I’m the worst partner ever for being so blind.”

Tara was still smiling, but less salaciously as she rested her head on Willow’s shoulder. “You weren’t blind. I mean, look at your toe.” They both chuckled, “My worst accusation could be, you didn’t realize it was possible for me not to be pretty.”

“It’s not possible.”
“See?”

Willow braked slightly as she turned off on their exit. They were silent as the car coasted off of the highway and almost immediately onto the beachside road. Willow pulled in next to a Jeep, guessing it to be the Summers’. When the engine died away, she turned to Tara.

“It’s not possible for you to be anything short of gorgeous.”

“And I know you think that way,” Tara said seriously, “for which I’m grateful. But I don’t think that way, whether or not I try, and I don’t think I can. So that is why,” she reached back in to her plastic bag and pulled out a grey tank top, “I’m going to put this on.”

“You’ll feel better seeing my friends this way?”
“Yes.”

“Okay.” Willow nodded, “Okay, that’s fine. I’m still sad that beautiful suit is going to go to waste, all the same.”

Tara feigned being affronted.

“Go to waste?” She said severely, “Why would it go to waste?”

Willow looked confused, and felt as much as she looked.

“I thought you didn’t like the bathing suit?”

“I don’t like the bathing suit in public,” Tara responded, “In private, I’m sure we can find some use for this.”

The two women walked on to the beach, hands touching on the handlebar of an oversized thermos and smiling at the group of people waving to them. It would be a nice day at the beach with friends. When they left the friends, it would be a nice day of meticulously removing suntan lotion.

It would be a nice day.

Started reading all these wonderful stories yesterday when I ran across them, and just now finished, and all I can say is brave :flower !

also, as I am a totally qoute-obssessed person, I thought I would suggest a few of my favourites...

"When choosing between two evils, I always like to take the one I've never tried before"-Mae West

"Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly." -Rose Franken

It's the passion in a kiss that gives to it its sweetness; it is the affection in a kiss that sanctifies it.

You must be the change you want to se in the world. ~Ghandi

"Maybe you should save this new optimistic streak for some time when we aren’t all about to be devoured by demonic hell spawn," Anya

expressing grief and pain is natural for a human being, but one must not get lost on that path !!!!!!!!

"Pope John Paul today confirmed his opposition to gay marriages, said they're unnatural. Gay marriage is unnatural. Then he put on a pointy hat, his dress, and returned to never having sex at all." -Bill Maher

part of forever is better than none

We don't need their shallow popularity; we'll build our palaces in the dark and beautiful places they forgot to look.

"Giles! I made them laugh, did you hear? I did....the joke thing"

It’s like my whole life’s been rearranged, and I’m still trying to figure out where everything is.

Woman are like noodles....they're only straight till you get em wet

Robert A. Heinlein The Earth is too fragile a basket in which to keep all your eggs.

Prof. Gerard K. O'Neill Is the surface of the Earth really the right place for an expanding technological civilization?

"Relationships are hard. It's like a full time job, and we should treat

A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn; it can be stabbed to death by a joke or worried to death by a frown on the right person's brow. Charles Brower

people say, “How do we explain to kids that someone has two moms?” And to me, that’s an easy answer: “All families are a little bit different. Some families have four grandparents, some have two. But what makes a family is love.” More important to me is: How do I explain to my kids that other people don’t view them as equal? I haven’t found an answer for that yet
