jixer: Yes, there does seem to have been a decided lack of real men in this fic. We now have a girls moving into a very different lifestyle indeed and my only regret being that there is just one chapter remaining and not enough time to explore it. I could keep going of course but I’ve brought this fic almost to the point where I feel it is time to end it. I’ve had heaps of fun writing WYTN? but I think all good things must come to an end.

wimpy0729: Making kittens squirm is one of my favourite pastimes! I don’t know where all the dirty talk came from, I think I was just in one of those moods when I was writing this chapter. Bad me :p It seems I can’t make any promises about being able to update as soon as I’d like due to the fact I’m so busy at the moment but I’m going to try as best I can!

DreamstoDream: Knowing Faith I don’t think it will be long until she finds some action of her own!

Cesgirl13: Back and badder than ever of course! Glad you enjoyed it!

veiled isis moon: you have been bad indeed! I’ve missed you! But I know exactly how difficult it is to try and fit everything into the day…there never is enough time, not even for fun things like reading fics :D or in my case, writing them!

I think Willow would have found Tara eventually without Joe’s help, although he definitely saved her a lot of pain, both physically and mentally.

Didn’t you know homosexuality is contagious? Well, it seems plausible to believe that it could have been viewed like this in the 1950s. And it just goes to show the difference between Faith and Willow, they are essentially leaving the same world behind and yet while it was a huge struggle for Willow, Faith views it as another adventure.

Lol, I’ll hold your to your promise!!

JustSkipit: Thanks so much Debra :D Although it would have been very easy to draw out the forgiveness process, I think it would have been too painful for me at this stage of the fic. Yet at the same time I didn’t want to give the impression of having a quick fix for what was obviously a serious wound for Tara.

And yes, Willow and Tara found a two bedroom place so they could take in unannounced roommates :p

Artemis: lol, I think a lot of people would pay lots of money to see that!

As difficult as it was for her to forgive Willow, Tara did come to the realisation that their life together isn’t always going to be perfect, they’re going to fight, there will be other arguments…but their love will always keep them together.

I love this new set up as well and I would love to explore and expand on it but that’s just something I’m not going to do. What I do hope to do is write a chapter that will be a fitting end to WYTN? and leave everyone, including me, happy.

tarawhipped:Thanks so much. I always try for realism in everything I write despite the fact that it is one of the hardest aspects of a story to achieve well.

I’m sad that its coming to an end too but I’m also looking forward to leaving it completed and being able to take a step back from it.

But I wouldn’t worry at all, Captain Red will be back in full flight as soon as WYTN? is wrapped up, the next chapter of Rhyme and Reason is almost half done and there are a couple of other exciting ideas in the pipeline :p

numbered words: Thanks so much! I know what you mean, I’m always saying I wish people could understand…and that’s today…I’d hate to have experienced what it was like in the 1950s to live an alternate lifestyle of any type.

I love Faith, I definitely don’t think I could write a fic without her!

blue and green wings: lol, thanks and I promise to get cracking on the next chapter asap!

WillowRulez: Thanks so much for leaving some feedback! You remind me of all the fics I’m enjoying and have yet to leave feedback for! Lol, I can just see Faith’s annoyed face but somehow I don’t feel sorry for her at all…she’s just sore because for once she’s not the one getting the action!!

Modjadji: I have plans for Faith…even though there’s not that much time left to bring them to fulfilment. It’ll be fun, that’s all I’m going to say!

I agree with you, while it was easy for Faith to leave behind her life, Willow had a much more difficult time of it…understandably so given the type of person she is. I’m so very glad you’re loving it!

russ: There had to be evident pain from Tara in this chapter and I did struggle with it at the writing stage being the self-critic that I am.

While it would possibly have be unlikely for someone like Joe, an Italian-American, to openly embrace Willow’s relationship with Tara, I’d like to think there were forward thinking, open minded individuals in this time period and I’ve done my best to portray them realistically in this fic through the likes of Joe, Faith, Abby and Anya.

I was a little worried at the cheesiness of that line but I did love it from the moment I wrote it so there was no way I was going to change it.

I don’t think anyone feels sorry for the Rosenberg’s :p

I hope I can do all the kittens justice in the last chapter!

LunaMuses: Thanks for being a great reader!

BV: I don’t know if I’ll call it ‘giving in’ on Tara’s part because there was never any doubt that she would forgive Willow…it was just a matter of time until she realised that there was nothing to forgive.

sam7777: If they had to have a roommate then I can’t think of a more perfect person that Faith :p Someone to keep them smiling and feisty enough to fend off any ignorant or hostile individuals.

4WiccanLuv: Leave it to Joe and Giles to hold up the male flag in this fic.

I do get angry at the fact that Willow’s parents could not accept their daughter as she is but I’m also glad that she does have such a great real family around her that care about her more than her biological family ever did.

I couldn’t leave Willow to cry either, much too painful to let her suffer.

I do love playful, innocent Willow and Tara but I couldn’t resist putting in a little dirty Tara talk. And Faith is definitely going to have to get used to it!

Dreamlover: If I had a rap across the knuckles for every fic I read and enjoyed without leaving feedback then I’d have very sore hand!

Lol, I think this is one fic when there won’t be any Fuffy…I was at one stage considering it but in the realities of the time period I had to pass it over as something that wouldn’t be realistic. I’ll have to leave the Fuffy for one of my other fics ;)

AntigoneUnbound: Welcome back Mary! I’m exceptionally happy that you could catch up on all that has been going on. It’s been quite an eventful last few chapters to say the least. I quickly realised that the class struggle would be a major theme in this fic and I definitely would have been missing out on something in not exploring it.

Lol, thanks so much…it’s definitely one aspect of my writing I’m keen to improve on and I’m always happy to get great responses! :P

Thank goodness I’ve never had a moment like that but I could imagine only a few things more horrible!

Faith does indeed add a lot to any living arrangements and I think Willow and Tara are going to have their hands full with her! I only wish I had a few more chapters to explore it!

Thanks so much for all your awesome responses wonderful kittens! I’ll try and have the next and final chapter up as soon as possible!

hey alcy,

I'm just catching up on my favorite W/T farce only to find that it's not so farce-y anymore!! in a good way. a very good way. although, the introduction of Willow's roommates (brilliant to make it Faith and Anya, btw) was a very nice touch worthy of some of my fav old films.

Love how you've brought it all full circle in a believable way. this is not contemporary America (which is still not all that accepting), parents would not just take this in stride. especially finding out the hard way. but it all works out beautifully with the two of them (and Faith!!) in their own apartment. Love, by the way, the little touches of Willow being scared of her new life and not-so-competent at things like household chores she's never had to do before. it's the little things that give your stories such depth and a sense of place if that makes any sense.

Anyway, this is a lovely place you've brought us too and I love it that they haven't had to do it alone (giles, faith, anya, etc.). thanks again for all your hard work

veiled isis moon: Why am I not surprised by the fact that you like being bad? I’m certainly glad that I make you laugh…contrary to popular opinion, my main aim in life is not to torture kittens but to make them smile.

Ooooh, and I love promises :p

lipkandy: I’m the first to admit that this fic has ended up in a completely different place from where it started…but I hope it’s all the more better for it, I’m certainly glad that you’re still enjoying!

It makes perfect sense, the thing I love most about writing fics is creating a believable world, a world that doesn’t just exist in my mind…but in the minds of everyone who reads it. My philosophy has always been, if I don’t enjoy what I’m writing…then no one else will either.

For this reason and a few others I’ve re worked my idea for the last chapter, hence the title being changed. My original idea for the ending has been sitting at the end of the fic for the past few months but upon arriving at the point where I had to write it…I felt it didn’t do justice to this fic at all, nor the characters in it. So hopefully what I am working on is am improvement…I’m having fun with it though which is the main thing. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to come into being, I’m halfway there…so stay tuned kittens!!

Re: Chapter 35

Postby KiwiAlcyone » Fri Sep 24, 2004 10:03 pm

Well, here it is folks...the last chapter of WYTN? ever. This chapter has been incredibly difficult to write mainly because the story actually refuses to end! I realised when re-reading what I had wrote I could have easily written another ten chapters covering the material in this one chapter. So it may feel a little choppy and disjointed but I really feel that I need to put this fic to rest or I'll never be able to and I wanted to leave everyone with a sense of completion. I hope I managed this well enough...not all the ends are tied up but what I've left unsaid really isnt what this fic is about. In the end, it's about Willow and Tara having the courage to love one another no matter what.

To everyone that has read WYTN?, whether you've left feedback or just enjoyed in silence, thank you.

Chapter Thirty-five – “Everyone Loves a Happy Ending.”

Willow was breathing heavily as her feet flew across the sidewalk, even as she ran she was awkwardly trying to pull on her apron while at the same time trying to hold her heavy book bag. With the apron still hanging off one shoulder, she struggled to pull open the door of Dennis’ Diner. The door prised open she slipped inside and almost fell over in the process. She looked up to find Faith paused in the middle of wiping a table. The brunette then glanced up at the clock before fixing a decidedly reproachful frown on her face…directed at a rather bedraggled Willow.

“Fifteen minutes late Willow…again!” Faith chastened, although her tone was teasing rather than annoyed.

“I’m so sorry!” Willow dumped her back behind the counter, she poked her head over the counter into the kitchen where Dennis was slaving away over a hot grill, “Sorry Dennis, I’ll start fifteen minutes early on Monday.”

“No problem Willow,” Dennis smiled quickly before returning back to the beef patties sizzling away beneath his expert gaze.

Willow was trying to tie her apron into a bow but her cold fingers refused to co-operate. She gave up in a huff, throwing her hands in the air at her lack of basic co-ordination.

“Starting to regret trying to work and study at the same time?” Faith came to the rescue, spinning Willow around with a gentle pressure on her hip so she could do the apron strings up for her.

“No…” Willow said, although there was a trace of weariness in her voice that gave her away, “It’s just…”

“Hey,” Faith pulled the strings into a taut bow in the small of Willow’s back before spinning Willow back around to face her dead on, she smiled warmly, “Doll, you know you want more in life than this,” she playfully plucked at the front of Willow’s apron, “And you’ve got everything you need to get what you want...the brains, the willpower…excuse my pun…and people who love you…including an unnamed person who would follow you to hell and back.”

Willow couldn’t risk breaking into a smile, “I wouldn’t have lasted a semester without her, let alone almost to the end of my degree.”

Faith recognised the warning signs in Willow’s voice and she quickly moved to put a halt to the Tara-adoration she knew was coming up.

“I recognise that tone in your voice Will!” Faith laughed and tried to distract Willow with a mention of her second favourite thing to eat…food, “Hey, why don’t you take a seat and I’ll make you a sandwich…you look as though you haven’t eaten all day.”

Willow was about to protest and say she really ought to get to work when her stomach rumbled loudly and removed that excuse altogether.

“Five minutes!” Willow said firmly as she took a seat at the marble counter top. Faith beamed and went to work fixing a sandwich from whatever ingredients were handy.

Willow tried not to notice exactly what was going into her sandwich. She glanced around at the small but bustling diner which besides home and university, was the place she spent all her time. For two months Tara and Faith had made it their top priority to convince Willow that she ought to continue with her studies despite the fact her parents had refused all financial help. Willow had been at her wits end trying to convince them she did not need to study…and she failed miserably, she had never been a good liar. Tara had even offered to work two jobs to pay Willow’s way through school…at which Willow huffed and puffed and said she most certainly would not.

A few weeks later Willow landed a job at the diner where Faith worked…mostly thanks to Faith pestering Dennis non-stop until he employed her. The following semester she had picked up her classes at college and embarked on what was a very busy schedule. Between working and studying she began to fret she wasn’t seeing enough of Tara. However, every time she rubbed her eyes in frustration after staring at a page of text for too long or came home stinking of hamburgers…Tara was there.

“Willow!” Faith said suddenly, snapping Willow out of her Tara-induced stupor by slapping a plate laden with sandwich down in front of her, “You’ve got one of those soppy looks on your face again…get it off before you put the customers off their food!”

Dennis jammed his large palm down on his bell and Faith immediately whisked away to collect the order, leaving Willow to look dubiously at the sandwich in front of her. Nevertheless, she tucked into it with gusto and discovered that it was actually a lot better than she would have thought.

“Hey, Joe was telling me that the new Audrey Hepburn movie is opening at the Embassy tomorrow…do you and Tara want to come with us?” Faith asked as she swept past Willow with two armfuls of empty plates.

Willow chewed her mouthful quickly so she could reply, “We’d love to…Tara’s been waiting for that movie to come out for ages but she has to work tomorrow…and I have an essay to finish.”

“Well, more popcorn for Joe and I then,” Faith shrugged as she moved to answer the insistent ringing of the bell which ordered their working lives.

Willow grinned and talked despite having a mouthful, “I still can’t believe you’re dating a delivery guy…even one so nice as Joe…”

Faith arched an eyebrow dangerously as she plonked her elbows on the counter top next to Willow. Willow felt decidedly uncomfortable as Faith cracked her knuckles playfully.

Joe had remained fast friends with Willow. True to his word he had quit the Rosenberg’s employment on the very same day he had delivered Willow to Tara. Willow had been immediately sceptical when Faith had begun to show an interest in the young man. The mutual attraction however, was plainly obvious and after a stern talking-to from Willow, Faith reassured her that her intentions were nothing but sincere when it came to the handsome Italian-American. Willow eventually had to admit that she couldn’t be happier for them. Joe successfully tamed (most of) Faith’s wild ways and he was rarely without a smile.

Both girls were suddenly interrupted by Dennis thumping even harder on his bell. Willow quickly shoved down the last of her sandwich and moved to help Faith with the plates of food. They continued their conversation as they swept effortlessly between crowded tables.

“There’s nothing wrong with dating a delivery guy! And besides, he’s real smart…he’s going to run the business one day!” Faith replied indignantly.

Willow carefully placed the two orders of hamburgers and fries down on a customer’s table with a warm smile and received hearty thanks in reply.

“I’m having you on!” Willow laughed as she and Faith moved to clear a recently vacated table for the next customers, “If anyone has a reason to think the world of Joe…it’s me…although I have to admit I’m a little surprised at how long he’s managed to hold your attention…it’s been almost two years!”

Willow paused in collecting up plates to see Faith’s cheeks had reddened ever so slightly…even so, it was enough to cause Willow to break into a broad grin, “It’s the real thing isn’t it?”

“Well, we can’t let you and Tara remain the only happy couple in New York…and…yeah…I think it is the real thing…I really like him Willow…” Faith admitted, with just a little reluctance.

“Yeah…I know you do Faith, he’s a great guy…” Willow stacked the pile of dirty plates in her arms to carry back to the kitchen.

Faith followed with a plaintive look on her face, as soon as they passed into the relative privacy of the kitchen she burst out, “No, you don’t understand Willow…I really like him! It’s terrifying! I mean, what if he were to come by tomorrow and say it’s all over…break up with me!”

Dennis looked up from where he was liberally squirting mustard and sauce onto a hotdog, “Who’s breaking up with who?” the middle aged moustached man had a look of pure shock on his face at the thought of either of his girls being dumped.

“No one Dennis…no one,” Willow assured him and his jolly face quickly returned to it’s customary state of smiling, “Faith is being paranoid that’s all.”

“I’m just saying what if!” Faith protested.

“And I’m saying you shouldn’t have to, Joe loves you…” Willow piled her armload of dirty plates on the bench and turned to Faith, “and Tara and I love you too…you guys have done so much for us.”

Faith narrowed her eyes in warning, “Don’t you go getting all mushy on me Willow Rosenberg!”

Willow grinned and threw her arms around her friend to envelope her in the tightest Willow-hug she could possibly manage. Faith pretended to try and squirm away but she could do very little in protest when she was actually quite enjoying herself.

“I love you Faith,” Willow whispered very seriously.

“Shut up,” Faith replied going decidedly red.

“Hey!” Dennis interrupted the pair of them by thumping two pots together, “I don’t pay you two to snuggle in my kitchen…burgers and fries are going cold, coca-cola is losing it’s fizz!”

*****

“How’s it going honey?” Tara’s soft voice filtered through Willow’s sleep-addled brain.

Willow’s head jerked up suddenly from where she had been drifting off to sleep over her papers. She managed to look just a little guilty as Tara approached, her shoulders slumping slightly with weariness.

“I’m exhausted,” Willow replied honestly, although her condition was so evident she hardly needed to say it.

The redhead glanced down at her work to see an untidy scrawl that made absolutely no sense on her paper, she then looked back up at her partner with a weary smile on her face.

“And you’ve got ink all over your lip,” Tara murmured softly, reaching down to caress the aforementioned lip with a gentle thumb.

Willow scrubbed at the offending spot with the back of her hand but only succeeded in smearing it across her cheek. Being that she herself could not see it, she appeared quite satisfied with her efforts. Tara just laughed and drew a small, white handkerchief from her pocket. Wetting the corner with salvia just like a mother would for a child, she scrubbed the spot fiercely until the skin was red but devoid of ink. Willow wrinkled her nose up adorably,

“Ow!” she protested.

“Stop whining,” Tara chided gently, “It’s gone now isn’t it?”

“If you say so,” Willow muttered in fake sullenness.

Tara grinned, “Listen to you…I think someone is feeling a little sorry for herself.”

She wrapped her arms around Willow’s neck, planting a sloppy kiss on her cheek. Willow was playing hard to get, trying to twist away from her partner…enjoying the spot of playfulness in what had otherwise been a very depressing day full of schoolwork and no Tara-fun as the blonde had her time take up by customers all day. Willow had scowled at every customer who walked in the door for intruding on what was the first whole day they had been able to spend together all week.

However, as soon as five-thirty had rolled around, Tara had turned the closed sign around. The last few customers had been politely asked if they would like any help and a few minutes later the girls had the store to themselves. Tara had wandered to the back of the store to find Willow’s eyelids closed and her head drooping steadily as though she was moments from full fledged slumber.

Now, with arms wrapped around her neck and a moist imprint from Tara’s kiss still lingering on her still red cheek, Willow was almost wide awake. Tara nuzzled Willow’s neck playfully, trying to elicit some sort of enthusiastic response from her even as she was playing hard to get. Tara decided to play rough and swung a leg over Willow’s lap, squeezing in between her body and the table. Her breasts were of a height with Willow’s face, the red head only had to move her head forward a few inches for her nose to be buried in Tara’s cleavage. Usually that was a very pleasant prospect for the redhead…but she was forcing herself to remain above temptation. Although, faced with one of her favourite sights…she was of course failing miserably.

“Tara…according to my calculations…I have to do at least a thousand more words before I call it quits for the night!” Willow spluttered weakly…her attention riveted on Tara’s hands as the blonde slowly undid the buttons at the top of her shirt. The blonde undid each button with dramatic flair, peeling apart the fabric of her shirt to reveal her creamy skin and Willow just wanted to explore the area with her tongue, “That’s not fair.”

“What’s not fair is the fact that I haven’t had sex with my girlfriend all week,” Tara purred, running a hand down her throat, taking the exact same path Willow wanted her tongue to take.

“Well, why didn’t you ravish me one night after I came home from the diner?” Willow asked quietly, her eyes looking longingly at the soft tissue.

“Because you are always dead on your feet! Last night it was all I could do to half-carry you into bed!” Tara laughed, moving her hands to encircle Willow’s neck, rubbing her thumbs along the girl’s hairline.

“Well, you should’ve taken advantage of me,” Willow commented with a regretful sigh.

“I’ll make up for it now,” Tara murmured before lowering her face to meet Willow’s.

Their kiss began softly, both taking the time to work into it…as though they were familiarising themselves once more. Although for both Willow and Tara, the memory of the other’s taste would not fade even if it was ten years between kisses. At first it was just lips, lips being sucked, tugged at…nibbled gently. Both girls were just moments away from giving in to their desire for one another and explore everything…but at the same time both knew that they had forever to do just that. Willow gave in first, her mouth parting with a sigh to allow Tara full access. Tara wasted no time, her gentle tongue slipping into Willow’s mouth. Her penetration was shallow at first before

There was a small but insistent cough from the front of the store and both Willow and Tara looked up to see Giles standing at the front of the store. His hand poised over his mouth as though he had been on the verge of coughing again. Tara squeaked and in her haste to get off Willow’s lap, her legs became tangled in her skirt. She slipped sideways and fell with a thud on the floor. Both Giles and Willow reacted instantly to help her…although Willow in her haste simply made things worse by falling on top of Tara. The two girls ended up in a far more compromising position than they had originally been in with Willow lying spreadeagled atop Tara.

“Sorry baby,” Willow mouthed to Tara as she eased herself to her own feet before reaching out with two hands to help up her fallen girlfriend.

Tara grinned as she was drawn up into Willow’s arms, she quickly planted a last fleeting kiss on the lips she had been exploring so intently before they were interrupted by the embarrassed Englishman.

Giles was still very much an embarrassed Englishman and he had to clear his throat again as Willow decided she didn’t want to let go of Tara’s lips. The girls were still slow in drawing apart, silly grins on their faces as they turned to Giles with their arms still wrapped around one another. Tara’s grin however, faded slowly as she saw the all too serious look on Giles’ face. Giles saw her reaction and his gaze lowered to his shoes, he scuffed his feet awkwardly. Tara slipped out of Willow’s arms and crossed the short distance to stand just in front of Giles.

“Giles?” she asked quietly.

“Tara…Willow…um…” Tara knew that voice too well, he was moments away from removing his glasses and giving them a thorough cleaning, “I have a little bit of bad news girls…well, I don’t know if it’s bad…although it might sound bad as first but I think in the long term it will benefit me…and you two as well…”

“Giles slow down,” Tara said softly, “You’re starting to sound like Willow.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?” Willow asked in a small voice before Tara shot her a quick look.

“No doubt,” Giles managed a quick, tight-lipped smile before becoming serious once more, “Um…before I lose my nerve…I have to go home to England.”

“You can’t leave!” Willow immediately protested.

Tara was a little slower to respond, her face remained emotionless however and all she could do for a few moments was stare at Giles’ face. Her oldest and dearest friend was leaving to go halfway around the world. The thought immediately terrified her, they needed him…not for his financial support but the fact that he was one of the few people who accepted their love for what it was.

“Can I ask why?” she finally asked in a small voice.

“I’ve been offered a position at a university there…a dream position actually…though it was certainly it was by no means an easy decision to make…”

“Nonsense Giles,” Tara replied, trying to sound happy for him, “I’m so happy for you…” she turned to Willow and poked the redhead with her elbow, any attempt at subtly failing miserably, “We’re really happy for you.”

“Like hell we are!” Willow replied, staring straight back at Giles, her red mouth opening into a defiant pout.

“Willow!” Tara turned to Willow with a horrified look on her face as though she couldn’t believe that she had just said that.

Willow had the look on her face that she always had when she didn’t think she had done anything wrong, “What? You can’t just let him leave!” she turned and faced Giles, her lower lip beginning to quiver, “You can’t…leave…y-you…because…because…I love you Giles!”

Willow suddenly leapt forward and threw both her arms around Giles’ waist, squeezing as hard as she possible could…as though somehow it would change his mind. Giles looked down at the redhead in his arms and reached up a hand to stroke her hair gently. When Willow pulled away there were tears streaking their way down her face, she dashed them away quickly but more took their place. She eventually gave up and simply let them fall unimpeded to the floor. Tara wrapped an arm around her shoulders and drew her close…she needed the contact as well, her own tears were brimming unshed in her eyes.

“I’m going to miss you both dearly but I have to tell you there is something that might cheer you up a little…I’m leaving the store to you Tara,” Giles said softly.

“You want me to look after the store while you’ll gone?” Tara asked, still not having recovered from the original shock of hearing that Giles was going to be leaving their lives after having done so much for them both.

“No Tara…the store is yours…I’m giving it to you.”

“Mr Giles, you can’t…I mean…” Tara was speechless.

“I don’t want to sell it to anyone…I want it to go to someone I know loves it as much as I do…and I know you do Tara…so it’s yours…yours and Willows,” he grinned awkwardly, “You can rename it ‘Tara’s Books’ if you want.”

Willow pouted playfully, “I think ‘Willow’s Books’ has a better ring to it!”

“Call it what ever you want...and I'll visit as often as I can...I promise,” Giles said warmly and honestly, “But please say yes?”

Tara finally relented and allowed herself to be drawn into Giles’ arms. Not to be left out, Willow wrapped her arms around both of them and squeezed as tightly as she possibly could.

“Yes,” Tara whispered, tears misting her eyes as she missed the kindly Englishman already.

*****

“Is my hat on straight?” Willow looked worriedly down at Tara as the blonde hunched over, smoothing out creases in the bottom of Willow’s graduation robes.

Tara straightened to her full height and a smile crossed her face as she looked at her nervous girlfriend, “Firstly, it’s not a hat…it’s a trencher…and secondly you’re not supposed to wear it into the ceremony anyway…you haven’t graduated yet.”

“Oh,” Willow tugged it off too quickly, messing up her carefully groomed hair.

Tara smiled sympathetically at the petrified look on Willow’s face, reaching up to gently smooth Willow’s hair back into place. Willow immediately relaxed with the feel of Tara’s hands on her head. Her eyelids slid shut and the babble and noise that had filled her head fled before Tara’s gentle touch.

Tara took a step back, keeping a light grip on Willow’s elbow. Her eyes roamed over her girlfriend’s body, it’s lithe form concealed by the flowing graduation robes. Everything was perfect…

“Sweetie,” Tara whispered, “How on earth did you do it? All those hours of working at the diner…and writing paper after paper…”

Willow smiled, “You should know full well how I did it…you were with me at every step…I love you more than I can possibly say right now.”

“Hey!” Faith burst into their room, both Willow and Tara looked at the smiling brunette, “The taxi’s here and the drivers been honking on his horn for ages…haven’t you guys heard him?”

Tara grinned and turned back to Willow, sapphire eyes searching out green, shining with love and happiness, “We’ve been distracted.”

“I bet,” Faith remarked dryly, “Now stop distracting each other or we’ll all miss Willow’s big day!”

“You don’t need to make it sound so tragic,” Willow muttered as both Faith and Tara seized an elbow each and began dragging her out the door.

“She’s getting nervous,” Tara whispered in a conspiratorial voice.

Willow shot Tara a look that only confirmed her words.

Half an hour later, Willow had to admit that Tara had been dead right. She sat ramrod straight in her chair, hands clasped tightly together as she waited for her name to be announced. That small fact in itself was more than enough to cause her an extreme amount of consternation. What if it was pronounced wrong? Willow did not think it was possible to mispronounce either ‘Willow’ or ‘Rosenberg’…although it was highly likely that people would snicker at ‘Willow.’ She glanced around nervously at the rows of friends an family seated to the side of the auditorium…she hoped they didn’t laugh. Unless she tripped of course…then people would laugh. Willow felt the heat creep into her face just at the mere thought of taking a tumble in front of her entire graduating class.

“Willow Rosenberg!” the Chancellor’s voice boomed out around the hall

Willow had worked herself up into such of state of panic that she immediately leapt to her feet, almost kicking the poor person seated next to her. She approached the stairs with something akin to blind panic.

Don’t trip…one foot after the other…don’t trip….smile! No wait…don’t smile, you’ll look like an idiot…calm…composed….don’t trip!

Willow made it safely up the stairs and across the stage to shake hands with the Chancellor who murmured some heartfelt words of congratulations that Willow could not hear.

All she could hear was everyone cheering like crazy, her classmates…people who obviously did not even know her and yet they cheered anyway as she bounded up the stairs with a huge grin on her face. A few voices stood out from the rest. When she dared to turn her head slightly, she quickly found Faith, Joe and Tara standing up, hands clapping above their heads. Willow even felt so brave as to wave quickly in their direction before continuing across the stage and down the other side safely.

As she descended the steps she felt a sense of anti-climax…the rolled piece of paper in her hand…something she never thought she would ever hold. All those hours working at Dennis’…the hours she had spent apart from Tara…were they all worth it?

“Willow!”

Willow looked up to see Tara threading her way to the end of her row, she ran down the aisle in her skirts…completely oblivious to how she must look. Willow grinned as Tara swept her up into her arms, swinging her around. Tara pressed her cheek firmly against Willow’s, laying a tiny kiss on her cheek.

“I’m so proud of you,” she whispered fiercely in Willow’s ear.

When Willow pulled back there were tears glistening in Tara’s blue eyes. Willow looked down at the paper in her hand and realised it was as much Tara’s degree as her own. She pressed the degree into Tara’s hand…wishing she could press her lips to Tara’s at the same time.

“Tonight,” Willow mouthed, a hot flush sweeping over her face for no reason other than that she loved the blonde more than life itself.

Tara arched an eyebrow questioningly as though she didn’t quite understand what Willow was meaning, “Willow loving?” she mouthed with a grin on her face that said she knew full well that was what it was.

Willow nodded with a serious expression on her face and managed to mouth her reply with a straight face, “Willow loving.”

*****

Later than evening, the four of them were celebrating as far as their budgets would allow. Which meant they were having celebratory hamburgers free of change at the diner. Dennis only too happy to cook four last hamburgers that evening for his favourite employees and customers.

“Where to now Will?” Joe asked before taking a long gulp of his coke, “You can’t keep working here now that you’re a college graduate.”

“What’s wrong with working here?” Faith punched Joe in the arm.

Joe rubbed his arm in mock pain, managed a fairly good imitation of Faith’s pout while he did so.

“I don’t think Willow is going to be working here for much longer,” Tara spoke up, casting a sideways glance at her girlfriend "…do I have to call you Professor Rosenberg when you’re appointed to the college faculty?” Tara asked, reaching up to run both her hands through Willow’s silky hair, toppling her trencher off in the process. The silly hat fell unmissed to the floor.

Willow lent down and kissed Tara gently on the lips, her tongue lingering along those beautiful full lips she loved so much, “Only in the bedroom,” Willow whispered in a low sultry voice.

Tara’s eyebrows raised in semi-shock at the red head’s mischievous tone and smouldering green eyes. It did not last long before Willow collapsed into a fit of giggles, burying her head in Tara’s shoulder for a few moments to compose herself. When she looked back up again her eyes were brimming with tears of laughter.

“You do beat all Willow Rosenberg,” Tara reached out and tweaked Willow’s nose playfully.

“Seriously though,” Willow sobered up a little, “I haven’t even been offered a position yet…”

“Willow, stop being modest! You’ve all but been officially told the vacancy in the science department is yours…”

“I don’t want to get my hopes up,” Willow admitted, knowing if she was not offered the position she would be crushed. However, many of the other faculty members had told her she had the job and they were just completing the formalities.

“Understandable,” Tara whispered, continuing to stroke Willow’s head, this time running her thumb lightly along Willow’s jaw.

“And besides,” Willow’s eyes twinkled again, “I like working here!”

They both looked around at the diner, the scene of many fun filled meals but also a lot of sweat and struggle…and the pay had never been that good. It was a diner after all.

“I know how much you’re going to miss customers that yell at you because they have the wrong order…or all the men that try and grab your arse as your walk past their table…”

“Now that I will not miss!” Willow shivered slightly but there was still a grin on her face, “The only fingers I want grabbing my arse are yours!”

“Okay, okay!” Joe held up his hands as though Willow and Tara were about to start grabbing arses right in front of him and Faith, he rose to his feet, “Before you guys get so far caught up in each other…as you are prone to do…” Faith was nodding vigorously in agreement, “I just want to say a few words…firstly to Willow for being so damn smart, don’t worry about it…we still love you!”

Faith and Tara both hooted loudly and took deep gulps of their own drinks as Willow nodded her head in acknowledgment.

“Um, we don’t want to steal your limelight,” Joe spoke up a little awkwardly, his face a bright shade of red,” But Faith and I have been waiting to tell you some really great news…at least I hope it’s great news, we think it is anyway…do you want to tell them baby,” he glanced nervously at his girlfriend.

Faith grinned and was quick to speak up, “Hell yes! Joe and I are engaged!”

Willow and Tara were both struck speechless for a good few seconds at least before Joe’s words sank in fully. They turned to look at each other for a few moments as though wanting to confirm they had both heard the same words from Joe’s lips. Them like clowns in a sideshow, they both turned their heads to gape at the other couple. Both Joe and Faith were beaming happily at one another.

“Congratulations!” Tara finally managed to blurt out, while all Willow could manage was a silly grin.

Joe lent down to deposit a loving kiss on Faith’s lips and the brunette stood to join him for an even better kiss that brought about a rousing applause from Willow and Tara.

“That’s really…” Willow was trying to express her feelings but she was just having too many thoughts at one time to manage to get any coherent words out, “That’s just…wow!” was all she could manage.

“Do you think Abby and Anya will be able to come to the wedding?” Tara asked hopefully.

Willow sighed a little regretfully, “I doubt their husbands will let them…but we can hope right?”

Everyone else at the table nodded hopefully, knowing that their friends were sorely missed in their lives.

“Well, I don’t know about you two…but I have a delivery business to run at 5am tomorrow morning…and a lovely fiancé to walk home.”

“And leave at the front door!” Tara chastised mildly, “No hanky panky before the wedding!”

Faith chuckled, “You should know it’s a little late for that T.”

The couple moved out from behind the table and both Willow and Tara stood to join them. Each exchanged warm hugs and a round of congratulations going in all directions. By the time Faith and Joe finally made their departure, Dennis had appeared from the kitchen, ready to turn the lights of and go home.

“Can we stay a little while longer?” Willow asked her boss pleadingly, “I’ll be sure to lock up.”

“For you doll…of course,” and as he was leaving he flicked off the lights, leaving the diner shrouded in only the pale light of the neon ‘coca-cola’ sign.

“He knows us too well,” Willow whispered as she turned back to Tara.

The redhead pressed the blonde up against a stool behind them until she was sitting on the edge of it. Willow slipped a thigh comfortably between Tara’s, applying a gentle pressure.

“What a day,” Tara replied, nuzzling Willow’s cheek with weariness, “Almost makes you sad it’s over...and in a way…more than just the day is over…”

Willow pulled back a little so she could gaze questioningly into Tara’s eyes. The blonde was obviously tired and yet they still sparkled with her trademark energy. Willow managed to lose herself in them for minutes before she finally spoke…

“How do you mean?”

“Well…Joe and Faith are getting married, which means all manner of new changes…not least of which will be that you and I will be living alone…and you’ve finished school and are about to be appointed as one of the youngest faculty members at NYU…and I have the store that keeps me more than busy. Doesn’t it just seem as though everything has fallen into place?”

Willow cocked her head to one side in an adorable manner than Tara loved…it was her thinking pose.

“Baby…” Willow whispered tenderly before claiming Tara’s lips lovingly, for a few seconds she stroked them firmly with her own…teasing just enough so that Tara emitted a small groan when Willow pulled away, “…everyone loves a happy ending.”

Tara licked her lips and raised her eyebrows questioningly, eyes sparkling in the dim light, “I don’t know if we’ve reaching an ending…I’d prefer to say we’re moving into the next chapter.”

“There have already been lots of chapters don’t you think?” Willow grinned as she remembered their adventures, “The mummy hand…oh my god, I thought I was going to die in that crate…with your lips right there and me wanting to kiss them so badly…”

Tara let out a breath, “Tell me about it, I could have sworn you heard my heart beating…not to mention that damn painting!”

Willow let out a loud guffaw, burying her face in Tara’s shoulder for a few moments, “Those French guys are never going to look at American girls the same way again.”

“And I seem to recall a certain red head getting a little too frisky at the dinner table one night…leading to flying food.”

Willow blushed bright red, “Why is it that I seem to be attracted to getting into scrapes wherever I go? You know what…from this moment on…I’m going to be dignified Willow…I have a university degree dammit! End of getting into scrapes!”

“But you’re so cute when you do!” Tara giggled and felt the full force of Willow’s stare before she relented, “Okay, I’ll at least let you say it,” Tara laughed happily, nuzzling Willow’s cheek, “Is it an undeniably happy ending?”

“You betcha…but you know what I’m really looking forward to now?” Willow asked, practically purring as Tara nuzzled her cheek, “The new beginning…any ideas on how it should start?”

“A few,” Tara whispered as she ran a hand up around Willow’s back, continuing upwards to caress her neck, “Although most of them are not suitable to take place in a place like this.”

“Hmmm, I like the sound of those already” Willow had her naughty face on, green eyes twinkling, cheeks pink tinged with desire, “Should we go make a start?”

“Willow Rosenberg…that’s the best idea you’ve had since you decided to fall in that fountain.”

“I did not decide to fall in the fountain!” Willow protested as stood on her own two feet, “It was an accident!”

Willow found her feet and reached out two hands to help Tara up from her perch on the stool. She pulled the blonde up and into her arms.

“I’m not going to argue with you Will…mostly because we’ve got the rest of our lives to argue…let’s go home…put Dean Martin on the record player and see what happens shall we?” Tara arched an eyebrow suggestively.

Willow gulped to find her mouth dry as Tara pressed forward further into her arms.

“How do you do that?” Willow asked as Tara gently slid one arm around her waist and at the same time took her hand gently, she applied a little pressure and they both twirled slowly between the empty tables.

“Do what?” Tara asked softly.

Willow drew Tara’s hand to her chest where her heart was thumping like mad as though it were trying to burst through her chest, “This!”

Tara winked and began kissing Willow in one long, luxurious caress of her lips. Willow felt as though at any second her knees might buckle and give way beneath her. When Tara drew back there was a decidedly naughty look on her face,

“Because I am so damn gorgeous,” Tara replied in all seriousness.

“Oh good lord,” Willow whispered, knowing that if they remained the way they were for much longer she would be forced to ravage Tara right in the middle of the diner, “Um, I-I…think we should get out of here…please…”

“Let’s go home Willow,” Tara whispered, in total agreement.

oh cool! am I the first to congratulate you? I hope so :)

really a wonderful and remarkable achievement alcy. yes, this story changed in tone from the beginning, but it worked. you kept that wonderful "lightness" of the beginning while somehow managing to keep it realistic for the time period...and those two things are nearly an impossibility. I know. my mother had to leave her first love (a girl) to marry my father who is a wonderful man, but still.

I know a lot of readers would have preferred a 'happier' ending with reconciliations abounding, but this was so perfect for the world you created. Willow and Tara did it on their own. It's like a Cinderella story in reverse with a wonderfully happy ending. and it is a happy ending whenever the two of them are together and in love. so ...

BRAVA CHICA!!

and I'm so jealous. what is it about endings? they seem to get farther and farther away with each update.

thanks again for a wonderful read that never failed to bring a smile to my face.

A Beautiful Ending

Postby wimpy0729 » Fri Sep 24, 2004 10:53 pm

Oh you know, I always hate to see a great fic end, but you did it so beautifully...always love a happy ending (or a new chapter ;) .

You did such an amazing job with their journey, and oh so much angst (stupid Mr. Maclay and Willow's parents..grrrr). But that was indeed part of their journey, and they made it through together and I believe it made their love that much stronger.

The way you brought everything together here was truly wonderful and the pieces did fall together. This is why I love this board...here they end up...Willow and Tara together forever. :luv2

Great job!

Re: Chapter 35

Well, I have to say that my first reaction was "There could've been ten more chapters? Bring 'em on!" But every story has to have an ending, and this was a great one. Just like Tara says, it feels like the beginning of a new 'chapter', even as this one is coming to an end. There's so many possibilities for the future - Tara owning the bookshop (did it end up as 'Tara's Books'?), Willow becoming a professor (she did get the position, right?), Faith and Joe getting married... as I said, so many possibilities.

Just between you and me, I'm imagining Willow and Tara - no longer blessed with Faith's presence, and their two incomes now being, I imagine, fairly respectable when combined - getting something like that little cottage Willow imagined way back in chapter 22. You know, with the bird bath, a little country garden, just enough cosy space for the two of them. Not out of the city, seeing as they're both working there, but maybe some little place tucked in a quiet little corner of some nice neighbourhood. Do they have terraces in New York? Something like that.

As you said the chapter moved about a bit, but I didn't find it disjointed - it felt like snapshots, each one well-chosen, and together making a complete picture. Willow working in the diner during her studies said so much about her growth, from rich girl (adorable, but nonetheless used to ease) to an independent woman who doesn't flinch from the hard realities of supporting herself. And her graduation had so much more meaning when we've seen how hard she worked to get it - not just brain work, because we know Willow can do that in her sleep, but real hardship, working long hours, coming home tired, that she got through to pursue her academic dream.

Giles passing the bookshop on to Tara was also great, showing the two girls at their best - Tara level-headed and mature, Willow excitable and impulsive. They're such a great pair, having the best of both worlds between them; I had a smile a mile wide when Willow lunged at Giles and hugged him.

And the final scene was wonderfully balanced between realism and a 'fairy tale' happy ending. The mention of Abby and Anya was a sad reminder that not everything works out perfectly - I don't like the sound of 'their husbands probably won't let them' come to Faith and Joe's wedding... and of course the fact that Willow's parents refused to help her pursue her studies, and that she and Tara had to restrain themselves to a kiss on the cheek at her graduation... but there you go, this is the reality of the world in the 1950s.

I felt that it meant so much that, in this setting with all its hindrances, Willow and Tara have staked out their territory and made a life where they can live together and be happy. Compared to the life Willow grew up expecting it probably seems pretty humble, but when you consider what they've gained it's a great achievement and a testament to both of them.

And Tara's absolutely right, she is damn gorgeous :drool

In conclusion, bravo! I'm sad to see this story end, but glad to have read it. And just like Willow and Tara, I'm receiving this ending in good grace, and looking forward to a new chapter - that being, of Rhyme and Reason, and/or Captain Red :)

Thanks for writing this phenomenal tale.

This was a very beautiful and satisfying ending, and as much I would love to see it continued, their story has definitely come full circle. If anything, now that they are entering a new stage of their lives (new careers, etc.), you could always do a sequel.

I love happy endings, which is why the Kittten Board is such an oasis, but I like that you didn't make it too happy. I half expected Willow's parents to show up at graduation and be all "we're sorry, you're ok by us," which would have been unrealistic, and taken away from the genuine support of those who stood by them all along (Giles, Faith, Joe).

Sorry to see it end, but glad we've got more Captain Red and Rhyme & Reason to look forward to. Thank you!

Chapter 35

Postby sabina » Sat Sep 25, 2004 3:43 pm

Hi :wave

I'm feeling embarassed because I've been reading this story for quite some time now and I had to see it end and realize that this was my last chance to leave a reply to your wonderful story to finally hit the reply button and start to write. :blush

There is so much that I could say that I almost don't know what to write. :moo

You wrote a beautiful love story with all the right ingredients: playfulness, lightness, love but also angst, dark times and hate and I feel sad to see it end. I echo Artemis' words when he says: You could write ten other chapters? Please do :grin

On the other hand it's nice to see a great story ending and becoming complete, unfortunately there are lots of great stories on pens that are still waiting to be finished.

I really loved your happy ending :pinky

Not all of W/T problems were resolved and they both have lost a lot along the way to reach where they are but they have grown and adapted. They stood together and their relationship held strong even against all odds. That it is the kind of happy ending everyone can hope for in their lives :wink

Thank you for an amazing story :applause

I almost didn't respond to this chapter, as others had already said it all so well. But then, how could I not say "thank you" as we come to the end of this story?

Throughout, you've struck the balance between the light comedy originally intended, and the tough realities of life in that time and place. We've seen the girls grow up, facing the heavy odds of social pressure and physical and emotional violence. Nobody handed them an easy ride; they made their own happy ending through hard work and steadfast love, "with a little help from their friends." At the end, it's the good times and the comical episodes they take delight in remembering.

I'm glad you resisted any notion of a last-minute reconciliation with Willow's parents, or with Buffy. Those who rejected the couple are gone from their lives; those who have supported them all along are their true family. And thanks for getting Faith & Joe together; it's nice to see happy endings for others, as well as W/T. Again, that touch of harsh reality as we learn that Anya & Abby have husbands who won't let them associate with Willow, Tara & Faith.

So once again Tara says it best, "Almost makes you sad it's over." and yet, "we're moving into the next chapter." (If you ever felt inclined to write any of those later chapters, there would be no lack of readers.)

As we leave this chapter of their lives, Willow & Tara are safe in their own home (humble but with the promise of better to come); they have their love, and Deano on the turntable. Vita bella, indeed.

Thanks, Alcy.

Chapter 35

Postby JustSkipIt » Sat Sep 25, 2004 8:22 pm

Well, I can't believe this story has come to an end. Well done throughout. I sense a sort of sadness and melancholy on your part and can certainly relate. It's like this is your child and now it has grown up and you have to let it go make its way in the world. And honestly, I think you should be quite proud of it.

Nice summarization of the events leading to this wrap-up. Faith and Joe, what a cute couple. I must admit that I pictured him as a sort of middle-aged butler/driver or whatever, not a young hottie. But nice to have a hottie for Faith. Is Faith happy working at a diner as her life's ambition or will being a housewife/mother make her happy? I'm wondering about her dreams.

Nice Willie-Wonka moment with Giles and Tara. It seems that all of Willow & Tara's dreams are truly coming true and how wonderful that these friends could all support Willow to complete her degree. That's truly something.

The only sadness I feel is that Willow's parents have apparently never made any further effort to be a part of their only child's life. How incredibly sad for them. I was expecting them to waylay her at the graduation to say something but they were nowhere to be found. How sad.

Well done!

Wow Alce, you are something else, you know that?

This is one of the first fics I started reading when I found this fantastic site, and, I swear, it's one of my faves. It's sad to see it end, but you concluded such a beautiful, fantastic story (novel even?) as I thought you would: amazingly.

I, too, thought Willow's parents would show up at the graduation and give a gruff 'congratulations', but I also thought that that would be too much to expect from them. Their loss, however.

Joe and Faith was excellent, I loved it. It's sad that Abby and Anya are cut out of all their lives, but it's so great that Willow and Tara have all this amazing support.

And Giles, you just have to love the man.

I thank you, and applaud you, Alcy, for such an amazing fic. Your writing and plot lines are brilliant, and I was a little scared that maybe in the last chapter, it wouldn't feel finished, but I must say, you pulled it off! Beautifully, too, might I say.

So, GO AMAZING ALCY!

Thank you

And of course the love makin.. gotta love it, and you wrote every time so beautifully.. I really am just awed by your talent and I wish this story wasn't over. Alcy, thanks for sharing this wonderful tale with us, I’m sorry to see it end. I recall, when you first began, it was intended to counter the angst of WN. What was supposed to be a light-hearted romp turned out to be incredibly profound. Your writing is powerful and real. And in the end, you had me *purring* like a happy fat cat! :kitty

Kudos, you captured the era perfectly with the lingo, the soundtrack and fashion. You also gave us a realistic glimpse into what being a woman meant at the time. It was harsh and sobering, and more so, if you were gay. It made me grateful to be living in the now. Although, I wouldn’t have minded one bit, the opportunity to have seen Elvis or Sinatra in their prime though! ;)

I digress…yes, things could be better at present, but your story clearly demonstrates the progress for both, women and gays. Not so far in the future, the Women’s Lib movement began in earnest. I can totally picture Willow and Tara burning their bras in a mass protest! :pride Seriously though, IMO, your Willow was a Maverick. She lived her life as she chose and not by how society dictated. She rebelled against convention. She didn’t take the easiest path, but it was the right one for her! And beautiful brave Tara…what can I say? She’s Will’s heart, her source of strength and her anchor. She’s often portrayed as so very kind and wise beyond her years, but I loved how by the end, she was also sexy and confident! :thud

I have to admit, I had hoped that their families and friends would come around, pleading “insanity.” Sadly, acceptance and unconditional love is not always in the cards. However, I’m happy with the surrogate family you created for them. Sometimes you gain more than you lose. Yay for Giles, Faith and Joe! :clap

I’m starting to ramble now, so I’ll stop! But once again Alcy, thank you, outstanding! It’s been a pleasure to read. Now, off with you….go forth and update Captain Red & RR, I miss them! :bow :clap

Loved the story. Willow and Tara both had to overcome their home life to be together. I loved how you used folks like Faith and Giles. The detail from Paris to the states was lovely. I find that W/T work even better in some ways in an AU setting that let's their love grow. it's such a wonderful relationship in any setting.

Chapter Thirty-One – “Winter’s Chill.”

The girls dorm room looked as though a miniature tornado had swept through it, spilling out the entire contents of both wardrobes all over the floor and the beds. While Faith, Abby and Anya were still applying unnecessary touch ups to their make-up, Willow had paced the floor like a caged tiger.

“Will, stop pacing, you’ll wear a hole through the ceiling…and you’re walking all over my cashmere sweater!” Abby snatched up an item of clothing just as Willow was about to step out it.

“You hate that sweater doll,” Faith replied calmly as she admired her reflection, “If Will wants to pace she can pace…besides…she is…kind of late…”

Abby and Anya both gave Faith an intense glare as Willow looked up with something akin to panic. Her eyes bulged and her mouth worked soundlessly for a few moments before she looked at her watch. Tara was almost fifteen minutes late…

“One minute after the last time you looked!” Anya said in exasperation.

“Why don’t you give her a call?” Abby asked softly.

“It’s not too soon is it?” Willow asked anxiously.

Abby picked her way through the debris to put her hand on Willow’s shoulder, “Will, Tara said she would be here at six…and we all know as well as you that Tara is never late for anything, especially not when it involves spending time with you.”

Willow practically ran downstairs to the phone in the foyer. She tried the boarding house first and Miss Connelly politely informed her that Tara had not yet returned from work. She rang the bookstore but the phone just kept ringing as though no one were there.

“I’m going to take a cab, I know the way she walks home,” Willow told the girls as she ran upstairs to grab her heavy coat.

“I hope nothing’s happened,” Abby looked worried.

“You want us to come with you?” Faith asked.

“No, I don’t want to keep you girls from your fun…can you just wait for another fifteen minutes in case she turns up?”

“Sure,” Abby nodded firmly, “We’ll wait.”

*****

Willow instructed her cab drive the route between Tara’s home and Mr Giles’ bookstore. She walked the same route every single night. Despite Willow’s insistence that she take a bus, Tara always said it was much too short to bother with public transport.

She sat the whole route with her small nose pressed to the window as she searched in the failing light. Tara would be wearing her familiar blue coat with the patch on one arm and her white woollen hat. As the cab pulled up outside Mr Giles’ bookstore, Willow looked anxiously out the window to see it looked as though it had well and truly been closed up for the evening. The blinds were drawn and the sign was flipped over to read ‘sorry, we’re closed.’ Willow gave the cab driver another dollar and asked him to wait for her as she went to look for herself. She tried the door handle, fully expecting it to be locked but it turned and she pushed it open.

The interior of the store was dark, only lit by slats of light from outside filtering in through gaps in the blinds. Willow peered around in the darkness for a light switch but could see none, she took a hesitant step into the store.

“Tara?” she called out into the darkness.

She was answered with nothing but silence. Willow stepped further into the store but even as she looked around she had a feeling she would find nothing out of the ordinary. Tara left everything in pristine condition…as she did with everything she came into contact with. Still, the door was unlocked and there was no way she would have forgotten…

Willow stopped in her tracks when he eyes came to rest on something lying behind the desk. She took a few more steps forward and gradually she saw an outstretched hand on the floor…lying on the floor…Willow took a few more steps to the right on her shaking legs.

Willow felt all the blood rush from her head and she fell heavily to her knees. She scrambled the few meters to the fallen form on all fours and found herself kneeling beside Tara. The blonde was lying on her back, eyes closed and unmoving. Her face was a bloody mess, so bloodied Willow could not tell where she was actually cut.

“T-T….” Willow started blubbering senselessly, her hand was trembling as she went to check Tara’s pulse.

Before she pressed her fingers against the familiar throat, she saw the steady rise and fall of her chest. Sobs racked her body as she reached out to lay her hand on Tara’s head, running her hand ever so gently over the blood matted hair. Seconds later she jerked her hand away for fear she was hurting her. She knelt, staring numbly at the violence that had been inflicted on someone who would never raise a hand against anyone in her life.

Willow managed to snap herself out of her stupor and turned to find the phone on the desk. With trembling fingers she dialled 911.

“Please, you have to send an ambulance!” she said urgently as soon as she heard the click of someone picking up on the other end.

“Calm down miss,” said a well-trained voice on the other line, “Where are you and what has happened?”

“Um…bookshop in Greenwich…Rupert’s Rare Books on…um, on Johns…Tara…m-my….my friend, someone has…b-beaten her,” Willow broke into a fresh wave of sobbing, “Please hurry. There’s a lot of…b-blood”

“Someone will be there as soon as possible, who did it? Are they still there miss?”

“Um, I don’t know and no…at least I don’t think so.”

Willow had to put the phone down she was crying so, her eyes were burning and her nose was running something terrible as she bent to touch her forehead to Tara’s chest ever so gently. The steady beat of Tara’s heart was the only thing that gave her a small measure of comfort.

“Baby, you’re going to be fine…please be fine because I don’t know if I can go on without you, I mean I can’t go on without you. I need you. T-Tara please…”

“W-W…” it was barely a whisper.

Willow’s head snapped up to see Tara looking up at her from the one eye that was not closed shut. She choked on yet another sob and reached out to cup Tara’s cheek tenderly.

“Oh god…Tara,” Willow whispered, wiping her nose with the back of her hand, “Someone’s on their way…I just called and they’ll be here soon…”

Tara tried to manage a nod, she winced in pain.

“Oh god baby,” Willow whispered fiercely, “Who on earth did this to you? Just tell me and I’ll…I’ll…” Do what Willow…turn them into a toad? Hit them yourself? Willow balled up her small fist and looked down at it with scorn…there was nothing she could do…absolutely nothing. Willow burst into a fresh wave of tears, pressing the balled up fist to her mouth in a vain effort to curb them.

“Stop crying Will,” Tara whispered through swollen lips, her voice sounded laboured, “You’re ruining your dress…and it’s so pretty too…”

“It’s new…I was going to surprise you…” Willow began before her face fell even further, “My dress! Tara what are you doing talking about my dress! Look at…oh my god…Tara…baby, I’m so sorry.”

“Why are you sorry?”

“I should’ve been here…I could’ve done something!”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know…anything!”

“Will, he would have done the same to you…I’m so grateful you weren’t here.”

“Who Tara? Who was it?”

Tara’s eye closed shut slowly even as a single tear leaked from the corner, “It’s alright Will…”

“Goddamn it Tara…what about this is alright?” Willow burst out angrily in between sobs.

“Tired,” Tara mumbled.

Willow saw that she was slipping back into unconsciousness and was not sure whether that was a good thing or not. What if she couldn’t wake up again?

“Tara?” Willow said urgently, wanting desperately to reach out and shake her awake, “Come on baby…”

Tara was still unconscious a few minutes later when the ambulance arrived and strange men came to help Tara. Willow was leaning over her, sobs shaking her tired shoulders and she refused to be moved.

“Stand back miss…let us help her,” a strange voice spoke to her in soft tones.

Willow felt someone help her to her feet, she stood on shaky legs and watched from far away as they worked on the still form of the girl she loved. Her vision slowly became murky, fading to black at the corners and gradually spreading to envelope her whole consciousness.

*****

“I can’t believe you fainted.” Tara said softly, “I thought you called the ambulance for me.”

Willow managed a weak attempt at a smile, “Sorry…”

“No…I was stupid…”

“Tara Maclay…don’t you dare say what I know you have on your mind,” Willow fought to the urge to start crying all over again, “This was in no way your fault!”

“Please don’t cry again Will…” Tara whispered, turning her head to look out the window, it was snowing outside.

“What happened Tara, why on earth would this be your fault. Why won’t you tell me who did this to you?”

Tara drew in a deep breath, not wanting to go through it all over again, “I was just about to lock the door…”

Tara stood in the middle of the store as he closed the door before turning to regard her with a calm that was frightening. Her lip was trembling uncontrollably and she bit it to keep herself from blubbering.

“Well?” he said walking across the floor to stand a few feet in front of her, “This is not much of a welcome for you to give your father?”

“What do you want?” Tara asked quietly, forcing herself to keep her voice even and sound as though she were not absolutely terrified.

“What do I want? You walk out on your family without a word and you ask me what do I want? I want you to come home of course, back where you belong with your brother and father.”

“I don’t belong there, you’re not my family.”

“Sometimes I wish to god that we were not,” his tone took on an even darker edge as his eyes narrowed, “You have brought shame and disgrace to the Maclay name Tara!”

Tara bristled, as if she really cared what other people thought of her family, “I’m not living for you! I’m living my life! Mine! It’s not yours or anyone else’s, it’s mine!”

“You call the perverted and sinful lifestyle you live a life?” he was almost yelling.

“What?” Tara frowned, how could he know…“Perverted? Sinful?”

“You walked out on us and I was ready to cut you off completely despite the fact that it was against my better judgment. A woman’s place is with her family after all…but Donnie saw you…” he drew in a deep breath as though he were struggling with something difficult, “He saw you…and a…girl dancing at a bar! Another girl Tara!” he spat it out as though it were a foul taste in his mouth, “And then he said you…that you kissed her! In full view of everyone!”

“I-I…” Tara ducked her head, taking a small step backwards.

“Are you trying to deny it?”

“No sir,” Tara whispered defiantly.

He came at her in a fury, his hand closing painfully around her wrist and twisting it up behind her back. Tara let out a small cry.

“Have you been cavorting all over town with this dyke of yours? Allowing yourself to be drawn into that sinful world?”

“It’s not like that!” Tara replied, trying to wrench herself out of his grasp, feeling her anger rise at the way he saw her Willow, as some sort of evil temptress who had seduced her.

Her father twisted her arm even further and she let out a sob.

“Then what is it like? You keep it hidden? Enjoying sating your perverse lusts in privacy…have you given yourself to her?”

Tara set her lips, such questions did not even deserve an answer.

“Say you’ll never see her again and come home Tara…and this will be the last we ever speak of this again.”

“No,” Tara replied calmly, like there was a chance that she would choose her family over Willow.

“You would defy me to go and be a whore to some dyke! It’s unnatural Tara!”

Tara was angry enough to take a step forward, “No it’s not, I love her!”

“You’re nineteen, you don’t know what you’re saying.”

“Of course I do, who are you to say I don’t?”

He slapped her hard, “I’m you’re father!”

“Yes, you are!” Tara choked back a sob, “But you’ve never done anything to prove it to me…you made Mom’s life a living hell…she was the most wonderful woman in the world and you beat her into the ground!”

“Your mother knew her place,” her father’s voice was tight.

“You’re a bastard of the worst kind.”

Her father’s hand crashed down across her cheek once more. Tara’s eyes were watering as she clutched her cheek.

“I hate you,” she hissed defiantly.

Another slap, this time almost driving Tara to her knees even though he father still held her by the wrist. It twisted painfully and Tara cried out as she heard the sickening sound of snapping bone as her wrist broke. He let her go and she fell to her knees, clutching at her wrist.

“You’re a monster,” she whispered, forcing herself to look up at him.

“And you’re not my daughter,” he replied, his fist crashed across her face.

Tara lost count of how many blows feel after the second or so. She tried to tuck herself up into a ball, cradling her broken wrist against her chest.

“You are no longer part of our family Tara!” he punctuated this with a fierce kick to her stomach, “I never want to see you again!”

Despite the situation, it was the best news Tara could hear from her father. Whatever he did to her with his fists, it did not matter because she was going to be free of him. She was free and Willow loved her. Tara cried out then as a fist lashed out against her face. Willow loves me…
Another blow…followed by another…followed by a merciful darkness as Tara lost consciousness. She found refuge in her dreams of Willow even as the man who should have cared for her and loved her left her lying bruised and bloodied behind the counter…

“B-baby…” Willow whispered, trying to stop blubbering and be brave for Tara’s sake, especially when she had not shed a single tear and Willow had cried more than enough for the both of them.

“I love you Willow…nothing is ever going to change that,” Tara said determinedly.

Willow wiped her nose on her sleeve, “I love you too baby…”

“Even though my face is a mess?” Tara asked softly.

Willow reached out a gentle hand to Tara’s brow, careful to avoid the stitches just about her left eyebrow. She smoothed back an errant strand of blonde hair from her beautiful girlfriend’s face.

“I love you,” Willow said again firmly.

“Your hand is cold,” Tara said in a concerned voice, “Are you cold?”

“No baby,” Willow lied smoothly.

Tara saw right through it and Willow ducked her head, biting her lip.

There was a light knock at the door and Willow spun around to see a nurse standing in the doorway. A kind look was settled on her face,

“Visiting hours were over an hour ago miss…do you want me to call you a cab?”

“Can she stay?” Tara asked pleadingly, it was an effort to raise her voice above a whisper, “Please.”

The nurse smiled softly and nodded, closing the door behind her as she left them alone once more.

“Hop up here,” Tara patted the bed beside her with her good arm.

“I don’t want to hurt you…” Willow frowned concernedly.

“You won’t…besides, I’ll feel safer in your arms.”

Willow prised off her shoes, dancing shoes that had not seen any dancing at all that evening. She tugged off her cardigan and then tugged the new dress up over her head. It was thrown on the floor without a further thought. Clad in her chemise and petticoat, Willow crawled beneath the covers next to Tara. She kept her distance, not wanting to touch any area of Tara for fear of putting pressure on a bruise.

“Will, you’re miles away…”

“But…”

“You won’t hurt me…you never could.”

Willow inched closer to Tara until their bodies were pressed together. With a small intake of breath, Tara lifted her head as Willow put an around beneath her and around her shoulders. Tara nestled against Willow’s shoulder even as the red head moved her other arm over her stomach.

“Better?”

“Much.”

Willow kissed the top of Tara’s head, “Sleep baby.”

“You’ll watch over me?”

“Like a hawk,” Willow whispered, “like a hawk.”

She listened to Tara’s breathing slow until she was sure the blonde had fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep. Only then did she allow her tears to start falling again. Tears for the girl she held in her arms, cradled against her. Tears for the both of them because she knew in her heart that what they shared meant they would always be exposed to the hate and violence of others. She stroked Tara’s hair even as she wished things were different. While Tara could be so amazingly brave…Willow knew that she herself could not…she was terrified.
