To be honest I think posting the series was a mistake.

Hate to disagree with you, but it wasn't a mistake. It's very very quiet on the board lately, we had a lot of activity when we moved in April, cos people were getting to know the new board, and getting excited again. But lately, it's been eerily quiet. So much so that I stopped refreshing as often as I used to, cos I know there probably won't be anything new.

So, don't be discouraged. Keep posting. May be now the summer is over in the northern hemisphere and people get back to school / work / routine, it'll get better.

To the update. Now I know why Tara was so nervous, she proposed. :bounce And Willow accepted. :bounce The dinner with the Rosenberg parentals will be interesting, I get the feeling that they're only just accepting that their only daughter is gay, and now with the big news? *snicker* I wonder if Willow and/or Tara can keep a straight face.

Like Buffy
I'd always imagined that it'd be Willow to ask.

Who cares? It's happy news. I can't stop the bouncy bits. :bounce Nothing else seems important after that, cos ... they're getting married, here I go again. :bounce

But I rein myself in, cos what's this about a Great One threatening to kill all humans? Sounds ominous. I must say, if I were a vampire, I'd rise up against this Great One, cos he's taking my food away, but who knows what vampires think, eh?

Still resisting the temptation to read ahead. :P

Well if it had been a matter of just getting a couple of responses to each part then I wouldn't have said anything. However before your comment the last four parts hadn't had any kind of response. Not a peep, not even complaints that I'd missed out day 3 (BTW I'm not sure how that happened :blush )

I went through the whole not getting feedback thing with The cathedral and the bazaar, none of the last twelve or so parts go any response, and I have to say it was pretty soul destroying. I'm not sure I can face going through that again.

Also I have been suffering from depression lately and it has to be said the response to this fic wasn't helping with my recovery.

Sorry to lay all that on you :blush but that's why I said it was a mistake.

I'm not ruling out working on it again in the future, it's just at the moment I'm not in the right mental place to do a good job on it.

Now I know why Tara was so nervous, she proposed. bounce And Willow accepted.

Yeah, Willow & Tara getting married is always of the good :)

I must say, if I were a vampire, I'd rise up against this Great One, cos he's taking my food away, but who knows what vampires think, eh?

Well on the show Spike was the only vampire who seemed to realise that killing all humans would mean an end to their food supply. Most seemed eager to jump on the apocalypse band wagon.

Thanks for the encouragement. Sorry to be so mardy about it all.

ETA: I've editted the post for day 2 so it now also contains day 3

Day 6

Tara hesitated outside the room where the Wicca group met. She had missed the last couple of meetings and she wondered if it was worth keeping coming. She never said very much and Tara doubted if she would be missed by the other girls. Tara turned and started to walk away. She had gotten a couple of steps when she stopped again and turned back. This was one thing she wasn't going to run away from. She was going to keep coming to these meetings. As Tara went into the room she noticed that there was a new girl there. As she sat down she couldn't help but keep glancing up at her. The girl next to Tara said, "Hi Tara. I was starting to think you'd stopped coming."

Tara smiled shyly at her then asked, "Who's the new girl?"

"Oh that's Willow."

The cabin was a hive of activity with everyone hurrying from room to room getting everything packed up. Buffy looked up to see Willow in the doorway, "So are you all packed up?"

"Yeah, though Tara's just double checking we've got everything. Well triple checking actually. "

Willow hesitated a moment. Noticing this Buffy asked, "Is something wrong?"

"I take it you know about the idea to bind my powers." Buffy nodded, "And that I decided against it."

"Yeah. I have to say I'm glad you did."

"You are?"

"Well Tara made it sound rather bad."

"Oh, well anyway I wanted you to have this." She handed Buffy a few sheets of paper.

Looking at it Buffy saw it was a copy of the spell. "Why do I need these?"

"I want you to keep that. If anything happens and I lose control again, I want you to find someone to do that spell."

"Shouldn't you be talking to Tara about this?"

"I'm not sure there's any point."

"Because you think she'd refuse." Willow shook her head, looking down to avoid Buffy's eyes. "Oh!" It occurred to Buffy that if Willow did lose control again it'd be because Tara was dead. "Right well I guess either Anya or Giles will be able to handle it."

"Thanks. Not that I think you'll need to. I mean I've learnt from my mistakes, I'm not going to make the same old mistakes again."

"Well that's good. I always knew you were a fast learner." Buffy said, trying to sound encouraging.

"But you should keep that in case I start making new ones."

"Right, gotcha." Buffy folded up the papers and put them in her pocket.

Willow started to leave then, stopping in the doorway, she said, "Things have changed so much."

"What do you mean?"

"It's just before it always seemed to be us versus the bad guys, fighting the good fight." Willows head lowered slightly, "It's never that simple though is it?"

"No it never is."

***

That evening it was time for Tara to meet the Rosenberg's. Willow stared at her parents' home apprehensively. Even with everything she'd faced over the years the idea of Tara Meeting her parents still unnerved her. Turning to Tara she asked, "Are you ready?"

"Yes," Tara answered, "if you are." Taking each other's hands they walked up to the door.

They were greeted at the door by Willow's father who moved away from the door to let them in. Tara started inside, but hesitated a little when she saw the hard look Ira seemed to be giving her. Finally he looked away in order to call out, “Sheila, they're here.”

Sheila Rosenberg came into the hall saying, “Willow, we were starting to wonder if you were coming.”

Willow opened her mouth to protest that she was early, but then decided against it.

By this time Sheila had moved onto Tara saying, “And you must be Terri. We've wanted to meet you for some time now.”

Tara shook her hand saying, “It's Tara and likewise.”

“Of course dear,” Sheila said, not sounding like she believed Tara. “Well we can't stay out here all night, come on through to the living room.”

Sheila went to check on the dinner while Ira got some drinks. As he came back he asked, “So, Tara, is your father much of a golfer?”

“No sir. He prefers baseball.”

“Oh,” Ira said, sounding disappointed, “pity.”

Before he could say any more Sheila came back in, saying, “Terri, what religion do your parents practice?”

Willow was going to protest, either the rate of questions or her mother getting Tara's name wrong – she hadn't decided which yet, when Tara took her hand and gave it a slight squeeze, silencing the complaint.

“My father is a Methodist,” Tara answered.

“But you're not,” Ira said.

“No, I'm a Wiccan,” Tara said, hoping they weren't going to burn her at the stake. She knew that Sheila was being controlled by a demon when she had tried to burn her daughter, but the story was still worrying.

“Well a lot of younger people are experimenting with new age stuff like that,” Sheila said.

“You make it sound like a drug,” Willow protested earning a disapproving look from her mother. Willow sank back into her chair, wondering how, after she'd faced a hell god, a single look from her mother could affect her so much.

“Well Marx did say religion was the opiate of the masses,” Tara said with a crooked smile, “But don't you think women are turning to religions like Wicca where they feel more empowered.”

Sheila mulled this over a moment before saying, “Well I suppose. I wrote something similar in one of my books.”

“Yes, I remember now,” Tara said, trying not to sound too obvious, “it was in 'God or Goddess, a study of gender roles in modern religion'.”

“You mean you've read it?” Sheila said, both sounding and looking surprised.

Tara nodded, “Yes, it was interesting.”

“We're not going to start talking shop are we?” Ira complained.

“Now Ira, Tara's our guest. You shouldn't be rude.” Turning back to Tara she went on, “So Tara have you read any of my other books?”

“Willow, I wonder if I could talk to you outside,” Ira said.

Nodding Willow went outside with her father leaving Sheila and Tara talking.

***

As they got outside Ira turned to his daughter and said, “It only seems like yesterday that you were a little girl spending your time with your head in a book. You've grown up so fast.”

Willow bit her lip to keep back the obvious retort.

“You're thinking that if I'd been around more then it wouldn't have seemed so fast. You're right. I missed you growing up.”

Willow didn't know what to say, she'd never heard her father talking like this. So she stayed silent.

Sighing, Ira went on, “When you first told us about Tara your mother said that it was a phase that more and more young people were going through and that it was understandable given the way that Osborne character ran out on you. I was happy enough to believe that.”

Willow felt herself growing annoyed again but kept her voice calm as she said, “It's really not a phase and my loving Tara has nothing to do with Oz leaving.”

“Yes well after three years we can't really keep thinking that you're going to grow out of it. We either throw you out of the house and disown you or accept the fact that our daughter's gay.”

Willow felt herself tense a little. She knew it was unlikely that her parents had invited her and Tara here just to tell her they didn't want to see her again, but she couldn't help feeling a little worried.

“We chose the second option.” Ira smiled slightly as he said, “Come here you.” After hugging his daughter awhile he said, “Now three years is a long time to be dating. Have you given any thought to marriage?”

“Actually,” Willow showed her father her engagement ring.

“You're engaged, and you didn't tell us?”

“Tara only proposed to me yesterday.”

“Well I guess that excuses you. Now let's go and save Tara from your mother.”

***

As it turned out Sheila and Tara were getting on well. Sheila was reading Tara excerpts from her latest paper on child development. “We should probably be making our way to the table,” Ira suggested.

As they went through to the dining room Sheila whispered to Tara, “I like you much more than that Darren. When he came round he barely said two words the whole night. Willow said he was really clever but I'm not so sure of that.”

“Plus I'm not a werewolf,” Tara said.

Sheila looked confused a moment then, grinning, said, “Oh, you're referring to the paper by Doctor Mary where she uses that word to describe people who seem quiet and passive but who really have violent tempers. Yes, he did seem to be that type.”

***

Walking home Willow gave a sad sigh.

“What's wrong?” Tara asked.

“Just the fact that I know for sure I'm going to wake up any moment now and then I'll have to go through seeing my parents.”

“It wasn't a dream sweaty.” As she said this Tara reached over and pinched Willow on the arm.

“Hey!”

“Just proving to you that you're awake,” Tara grinned. Leaning over she kissed Willow on the cheek before saying, “Your parents surprised you, didn't they?”

“Well yes, I didn't think they'd ever accept the fact that I'm gay. Plus they like you. Though that's not a surprise, how could anyone not like you?”

“I think they just want their daughter to be happy.”

“Well I am obviously happy with you, but they never seemed to notice whether I was or not.”

“Maybe they finally woke up to the fact that they have a wonderful daughter who they should pay attention to.”

“Or maybe my parents have been replaced by robots.”

Tara grinned and said, “So next time we visit do you think we should tell them the rest.”

Willow looked confused, “The rest?”

“About Buffy being the slaying and us helping her to fight the forces of darkness using magic.”

“Uh, no. I don't think they're ready for that.”

Laughing they continued home.

***

A short distance away a vampire watched the two women. It took a step towards them but stopped as it felt something pierce it's back. A moment later it exploded into dust. Buffy brushed the dust off her hands and then set off after her two friends. She knew they were probably well equipped with crosses, holy water and spells but she felt happier making sure they got home safely. She had almost lost her friends twice now, she wasn't about to risk a third time.

***

The Great One surveyed the forces of vampires he had created. “Yes, these will do well.” Turning to them he said, “Soon our day will come. We will cleanse the planet of it's human pestilence and I will retake my rightful place as it's ruler.”

TBC in The Witche's Hammer

Note: After sleeping on it I've decided to continue the story to the end with a couple of caveats

1: I've decided to swap the 5th and 6th stories which means having to rewrite the next story, so there will be a delay before the next update.
2: None of the stories from now on have been betaed. If anyone would like to perform that task then let me know.

Meeting the parents, Sunnydale style. :P

Pleasantly surprised at Ira and Sheila's reaction. Ira comes across as stiff, and Sheila her usual insensitive self. Part of me can't believe how Ira told her that he wanted her to be happy, it's like choosing to accept her and Tara was the lesser of two evils. But I'm glad he softened up again to the extent that he asked her about getting married.

Tara did very well to get on the good side of Sheila. I think that Sheila really wanted some attention, though she herself hardly gave her own daughter any.

:lmao about Oz the werewolf
you're referring to the paper by Doctor Mary where she uses that word to describe people who seem quiet and passive but who really have violent tempers.

Hee.

Going back to the cabin, how sad that Willow had to give the power binding spell to Buffy. It's an insurance, but honestly I don't blame her. I doubt she'd be able to survive losing Tara again.

I'm glad you're continuing, keep it up.

hahler: I'm glad that you're enjoying the story. Thanks for the kind words. They made me :-D

Watson: I did actually spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out how to portray the Rosebbergs. That part only started coming together once I had the idea of Tara being able to refer to one of Sheila's books and of Sheila suddenly starting to get Tara's name right from that point on.

Your point about Sheila wanting attention was a good one. It gives me the idea that maybe she was neglected by her own parents and threw herself into studying as a result. So much so that as an adult she's repeating the mistakes that her parents made with her.

I'm glad you're continuing, keep it up.

I'm glad I'm continuing. This story is the first serious piece of writing I've done, and the first thing I ever published (Written all those years ago in the hopes it would help ease the heart ache I was feeling :cry) so it would be a shame if it wasn't finished.

Thanks again for the encouragement, it means a lot to me

Title: Times of Darkness, Times of Light
Author: Justin
Rating: R
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters in this story, nor the setting.

Summary: A demon is hiring vampires as cannon fodder, whilst someone is torturing and burning the local women. A typical day in Sunnydale

The Witches' Hammer

Chapter 1

Buffy made a last sweep round one of the graveyards, checking each grave for signs of them having been disturbed. There hadn't been any vampire activity since Buffy and the others had returned from their trip a week ago and Buffy was starting to get worried.

Buffy jumped as a voice behind her said, “I've got some news that might interest you.”

Buffy spun around, Mr Pointy raised, ready to strike. She lowered it as she saw who had spoken, “Spike!”

“Someone's a bit jumpy, aren't they slayer?”

Turning away from Spike and continuing on she said, “I always get nervous when things are quiet.”

Hurrying to catch up with Buffy he said, "Yeah, well then you're going to want to hear my news. There's a nest of vamps over by the east side."

"Well what are you waiting for?" Buffy asked, as she started off in that direction.

***

Buffy crashed through one of the windows of the building. Landing lightly on her feet she pulled a stake out as she scanned the room for any vampires. The only sound was a door banging in another room.

"Oh this is just typical." Realising the building was deserted Buffy straightened up, slipping her stake back into her pocket.

Spike climbed in through the whole in the window, saying, "They were here, I swear it."

"Yeah I know." Opening a cupboard Buffy found a body there. It had been drained of blood and there were several bite marks on the neck. "There was definitely a nest here. So where have they gone?"

"There's been rumours of some demon big wig recruiting vampires."

Buffy spun round to stare at Spike, an accusative expression on her face, "And you're only just telling me now?"

"I haven't heard anything concrete, just vague rumours.” Spike shrugged, “I'm not exactly in the loop at the moment when it comes to demonic activity."

"So what exactly have you heard?"

"Demonic bigwig recruiting vampires. That's it. Oh yeah, I've been hearing the words cannon fodder being bandied about a lot." Buffy nodded, not really liking the sound of this.

***

A large field to the south of Sunydale. A couple of years ago a real estate firm had bought the land in order to build some offices there but legal wrangling had tied the project up, seemingly indefinitely. Right now the only thing disturbing the peace of the area was the sound of two women laughing.

“So Xander thought that your birthday suit was a suit you wore on your birthday?” Tara asked. She was stretched out on a blanket, with the remains of the picnic they'd just eaten next to her. “Surely you're not serious?”

“I am,” Willow, who was sitting with her back against a tree, “And don't call me Shirley.”

Tara just groaned at this.

“You seemed to be busy last night, doing lots of research.”

Tara nodded, “There's a spell I've been thinking about. I was researching it, I'd like us to cast it now.”

"There is?" Willow smirked a little as she added, “Is it a sexy spell?”

"Willow! Sometimes I think you have a one track mind.”

“Sorry,” Willow said, the grin on her face taking something away from the apology.

“You know how things have been quiet lately and how that's been worrying Buffy," Tara explained.

"Yeah, I think it's a slayer thing. When there's nothing going on she has all this extra energy so she starts getting anxious."

"I was thinking we could cast a spell to help."

"You want us to summon a monster for her to fight, in order to burn off all that excess slayer energy?" Willow frowned as she considered the idea, "I'm not sure that's a good idea, I mean there's a lot of ways that it could go wrong."

"No, you goof. I was thinking we could do some investigating, make sure there isn't some big evil brewing."

"Oh yeah, that makes a lot more sense. So that's the spell you were researching?"

"I've been working on a spell for general information gathering."

"Really? So what do we need to do?"

Tara got her notebook out from her pocket and opened it up at the correct page.

Moving to look over Tara's shoulder Willow said, “I don't know how you can read that.”

Frowning slightly Tara turned to look at Willow, “What's wrong with my writing?”

“It's so small.”

“Oh, I need to write small to fit a lot in,” Tara lifted the small notebook slightly as she spoke.

“Well I don't know why you don't get rid of that old thing and get a PDA.”

“My mother gave it to me.”

“Okay, if you need me I'll be over here,” Willow indicated with her thumb, “Trying to get my foot out of my mouth.”

Tara smiled gently, saying, “It's okay.” She reached up her hand to stroke Willow's cheek a moment before glancing at the notes one last time then said, “We'll need a sacred circle.”

“I can do that,” Willow said, “I'm good at the sacred circles with the being circular and sacred.”

Before long they had the ingredients of the spell laid out and were sitting facing each other within the sacred circle. Tara raised her arms and took hold of Willow's hands.

Tara began chanting softly, with Willow following, “Blessed Goddess, we come seeking wisdom. Guide us in our hour of need. Light our way so we do not stumble.”

Everything went dark. “Not what I has in mind,” Tara thought.

As the light gradually started to return Tara began to recognise where she was. "I've been here before," Willow said.

"Me too," Tara agreed.

A moment later an old woman appeared, "Well here you are again dears. Seeking knowledge again."

"Hi," Willow said.

"We just want to know if there's anything brewing that we should know about," Tara said.

"There's always something brewing," Hecate, now a young woman said. "But right now an ancient battle is set to be repeated."

"When will this happen?" Willow asked.

"Soon, dear. Don't worry you will know what you need to know, when you need to know it."

Suddenly, in front of them their was an image of the two of them. Willow was sitting on a bed, whilst Tara was sitting nearby. Willow recognised it as being from the cabin, when they had discovered the poem that Tara had written as a child.

"Why do you keep helping us?" Tara asked.

"We're repaying a debt."

With that Willow and Tara found themselves back in the field.

"That was strange," Willow said.

"You said it," Tara agreed, "So whom do they owe a debt to?"

"And if this is part of a debt why can't they be more specific?" Willow complained, "I mean ancient battle hardly tells us much."

Tara shrugged, "Well I guess my idea of proving there was nothing going on in order to help stop Buffy from worrying hasn't worked out."

"We'd better talk to Giles."

***

Entering the Magic Box Tara went over to Anya saying, "Hello Anya, are you excited about the wedding?"

"Yes I am, thank you. You're the first person to ask me that."

Willow found Giles and told him everything they had learnt from the spell.

"So they gave no hint as to what this battle was?"

"None."

"Well it does fit. Last night Spike told Buffy that something was hiring vampires to use as cannon fodder."

"That doesn't sound good," Willow said. "Oh, I think it has something to do with a poem Tara wrote."

She showed Giles the poem. “One is for the key, weak, yet strong; two is for the slayers, doomed to die young; three is for the witches, doers of good; four is for the vampires, drinkers of blood; five is for..." As he finished reading it he looked up and asked Tara, who had just joined them, "When did you write this?"

"When I was twelve."

"It shows an amazing amount of foresight. When you wrote it the idea of two slayers was unheard of. Also you wouldn't know about the key."

"But Dawn isn't the key any more," Willow protested, "Is she?"

"Well the particular ritual which Glory needed to return home can no longer be performed, but she is still the key."

"You haven't said anything to Dawn," Tara said.

"Yes, well at the moment she has a chance to lead a life as a normal teenager. I don't want to take that away till I actually know something."

"You haven't been able to find anything out?"

"Anyone who knows about the key has gone. The monks were all killed by Glory whilst the knights of Byzantium who survived the conflict with her have disappeared. Though I don't know how."

"They're not exactly inconspicuous," Willow said, remembering the knights habit of going around in metal armour as though it were still the middle ages.

"Quite, yet there is no sign of the order. Which makes getting information difficult."

They all stopped as the door bell rang, freezing when they saw who had come in. Willow had to struggle to resist the urge to walk over and punch the newcomer.

Walking in front of Tara, Giles said in a low voice, "Mr Maclay, I thought that we said everything that needed to be said last time that you were here."

"I'm here to speak to my daughter."

"Force her to go home with you, don't you mean?' Willow said.

"Willow, it's okay," Tara said. Moving in front of the others she said, "Mr Giles is right. We did say everything we needed to."

For a moment Mr Maclay looked angry, but then his shoulders slumped and he looked resigned. "You have every right to be angry. Anyone would be in your place. But please, hear me out. I'm not going to try to make you come home with us, I just want to try to explain what happened."

Tara didn't know what to say. Part of her wanted to tell her father to leave and never come back, but part of her wanted to find out what he had to say. He had never explained anything before and Tara was surprised at this sudden change.

"Okay then. If you come through here we can sit down." They went to the back of the shop and sat round the main table. Willow stood behind Tara, with her arm round Tara's shoulders. Giles and Anya remained at the counter but it was clear they were watching what was going on. "You let me think I was a demon," Tara said staring at her father.

"You're right and that was a terrible thing to do. You have to understand though, that's what my father in law told me."

"Grandpa Stevens told you I was a demon?"

"Not you, your mother. Let me explain. When I met your mother I was captivated by her. By her looks and her charm. I asked her out, not really expecting her to say yes, but fate smiled on me and she did. For the next couple of years we courted and I fell more and more in love with her every day. Finally I decided to ask her father permission to seek her hand in marriage. I can tell you I was very nervous. I mean the Maclays have always been wealthy whilst I was just a poor farmer, there was no way he would agree to the union."

"But he did," Tara said.

"Not at first, first he said the one thing I would never have expected. That his daughter was a demon."

"And you believed him?" Willow asked.

Donald looked annoyed a moment but answered, "I was going to laugh at it, thinking it was a joke, but then I saw his face and I knew he was deadly serious. When he knew I was convinced he asked me if I still wanted to marry Samantha. I said I loved her and would marry her even if she was a demon. Then he explained about how he had had to do things, things he hadn't liked, in order to help her control her demon side. He told me that it would be my responsibility to do the same, not just for Samantha but also for any daughter's that we had. I shouldered the responsibility with a heavy heart because I loved your mother. It wasn't easy but we both believed it was necessary."

"Do you think Grandpa believed it?" Tara asked, wondering how long the lie had gone on, how many women had suffered the way she and her mother had.

"I think so, yes. Who knows when the myth started. But I swear to you Tara I did believe it. I would never have done the things I did if I had had any doubts that it wasn't true."

"So what happened when you found out?"

"Well when I got home at first I was furious about your disobedience, I wanted to just disown you. But then it began to sink in what had happened. What a terrible mistake I had made all these years. I wanted to make it up to you, but I didn't know how. Then I heard that you had died and I thought I had lost the chance to make things straight with you, just like I had with your mother." He stopped talking a moment, seemingly lost for words. "When Beth came home saying that there had been a mistake and you were alive, I knew I'd been given a second chance. So here I am. I want to make things up to you. I want to be the father that you deserve."

"I don't know what to say," Tara said finally.

"I know that this is a lot to take in. I'm staying here a few days." He gave Tara a phone number. "If you want to talk then that's the number, but there's no pressure. I understand if you want never want to see me again."

After Donald Maclay had left everyone gathered round Tara.

"Well I certainly wasn't expecting that," Willow said.

"I know," Tara agreed, "Part of me thinks I must be dreaming."

Willow reached over and pinched Tara's arm.

"Hey!" Tara said.

"Just returning the favour from when we went to see my parents last week."

"So the question is, was he being honest or is this all part of some ruse?" Giles said.

"I want to believe him," Tara said, "But as they say, many times bitten, forever shy."

"I'd suggest taking things slowly," Giles said, "If he is being honest he won't mind you being cautious and you have plenty of time to catch up."

"You're right. I'm not going to jump into anything where my father's concerned."

"Can I ask something?" Anya asked, "It seemed that your mother's name was Maclay, so how come you didn't get your father's name?"

"That confuses a lot of people. The Maclays have always been Matrilineal. I guess it makes it easier to keep the demon myth going if the name isn't always changing." Tara grinned as she said, "I guess you'd say that my father's maiden name was Peterson."

"I'm surprised people go along with that."

"Like my father said, the Maclays have always been wealthy. That helps people overcome convention."

"So you should inherit quite a lot," Anya speculated.

"No. The men inherit the money. The women just get the name and the demon."

"Do you want to see your father again?" Willow asked.

"I don't know. I think I need to."

"Whatever you do, you know I'll support you, right?"

"Always," Tara answered.

Debbie woke up to find the room empty. She tried to work out how long she'd been there but couldn't. The days seemed to blend together. There was just the pain and the questions. The room was pretty small, with the only light source being an uncovered bulb hanging above her head. She could see around her a table with instruments on it and a short distance away there was a stove, which he used to heat up his tools. He had said something about not being allowed to spill blood, so he heated the tools till they were red hot. There was no sound round the room. After a few moments Debbie realised that she was alone. Though she knew it wouldn't be for long, he was never away for long.

Debbie woke up again, having no idea how long she had been asleep for. Then it occurred to her. This was the first time since he had brought her here that she'd been allowed to sleep. She listened a moment, but there was no sign of him. She started to think that he had gone. Left her there. Forgotten her. She would have been overjoyed, except she was chained to the chair. Her only option was slowly starving to death. There was the sound of steps leading up to the room and she knew he hadn't forgotten her after all. There was a knock at the door, "Is anyone in there?" It wasn't him.

"Help!" Debbie tried to call out but it just came out as a gasp. There was another knock and then the steps began moving away. Debbie almost sobbed, thinking her chance of rescue was going. Then her gaze fell on the table. Managing to move her leg a little she hooked it round the leg of the table and pulled it over. A few moments later the door opened and a torch was shone in.

This is a new story isn't it? I don't think I've read it before.

Nice build-up, vampire nest that was emptied out, demonic bigwig recruiting vampires, Hecate again. Like everything's been rewound and about to play out again.

Mr Maclay's reappearance, I don't trust the guy, his timing is far too perfect.

And what's up with Debbie?

Like I said, nice first part, look forward to reading how the threads tie up.

Watson:

Yes it is. I was origionally writing the series for the Wiccan Ways site, so when the site closed the impetus to keep working on it sort of left. So from here on out all the stories are new.

I'm glad you're liking the build up. Hopefully the pay off won't be a disapointment.

Mr Maclay's reappearance, I don't trust the guy, his timing is far too perfect.

Yeah there are definite trust issues around this guy.

Thanks for the feedback

The Witches' Hammer

Chapter 2

Tara woke up to find Willow was already awake. Willow was sitting up with a look of concentration, which she normally only had on the day of an exam. Tara guessed that Willow was preparing herself for her duties as Best Woman, something that had been worrying Willow since returning from their vacation.

“Last time there had been so much else going on, with the whole addiction thing, that I hadn't had time to worry about it,” Willow had confided one night, “What if that's why it went wrong, because of my not being prepared?” Tara had tried to convince Willow that the wedding going wrong had had nothing to do with her and everything to do with nefarious demonic activity but Willow was still concerned about the second attempt and determined to be the best Best Woman possible.

Smiling, Willow said, "Morning."

Tara sat up, “Morning to you too. What time is it?"

"Don't worry. We've still got time." She glanced over at the clock. "I almost can't believe it. By this evening Xander will be a married man."

"That is if he goes through with it."

Willow frowned at the idea, "He'd better, or I'll get cranky."

"I'm sure Xander's learnt from his mistake."

Their conversation was interrupted by the phone ringing.

"Should we get it?" Tara asked, reluctant to leave the warmth of bed.

"I heard Buffy getting up a short while ago." Sure enough the ringing stopped. A few moments later there was a knock at the door.

"Tara, it's your dad. Shall I tell him to call back?"

"It's okay Buffy, I'm coming." Getting up and throwing on a dressing gown Tara went to the door.

After a couple of minutes she came back and said, "Willow my father wants to take us out to dinner tomorrow night. Is that okay?"

"Sure."

Smiling, Tara said, "Okay, I'll tell him to pick us up at eight."

***

Once she'd finished talking to her father, something which didn't take long – conversations with her father were always brief and too the point, Tara went to have a shower and then got ready for the wedding, grimacing as she put the dress on. She had just finished getting ready and was going to go to help Anya, when she heard a voice saying, "My don't you look nice."

"Who are you?" Tara asked. she was getting fed up of having this voice stalking her.

"I'm a friend."

Tara felt something take her hand and softly stroke it. She snatched her hand away and said, "All my friends have got n-names." Tara tried to sound forceful, but was unnerved by the contact.

"My, aren't we feisty. You know I'm really looking forward to meeting you in person." Tara waited a few moments, wondering if it was going to say anything else. When she was sure that the voice was gone she went to find Buffy.

Tara found Buffy getting ready with Willow. She was about to say what had happened when, catching sight of Willow, she froze. Buffy was wearing a green dress like Tara, while Willow was wearing a black tuxedo.

Not noticing Tara, Buffy said, "Xander had better go through with it this time, because I am not wearing this a third time. Exactly how did you convince Anya to let you off wearing your dress?"

"Um..."

"You didn't use some sort of brain washing magic did you?"

"No, of course not. I just offered to do some work in the shop."

"Why didn't I think of that?" Then as Buffy remembered what had happened last time she had worked at the Magic Box, she decided that maybe wearing Anya's dress wasn't so bad. Looking at the doorway Buffy said, "Maybe wearing that wasn't such a good idea after all."

"Huh?"

"I think you broke Tara."

Realising that she had been staring at Willow for some time Tara cleared her head then said, "Hey, I need to talk to you."

Noticing the change in her lover's mood, Willow went over to her saying, "Honey, what's wrong?"

"Just a disembodied voice. Which is starting to get annoying." Tara shook her head, trying to get rid of the nervous feeling the encounter had left her with.

"What did it say?" Buffy asked.

"That she was looking forward to seeing me in person."

"She?"

"Yes, I don't know how but I know it's a woman."

"Well I don't like the sound of her getting near you."

"Me neither," Willow agreed, "Whoever it is can just stay away from my Tara or they'll have an angry Willow to deal with."

Smiling at her girlfriend Tara said, "Well then I've got nothing to worry about. I better finish getting ready."

"Well this is just bad. Well of course having disembodied voices talking to you is bad but this is just..." Willow trailed off, hoping that her expression would convey the wrongness of the situation.

Buffy reached out to squeeze Willow's shoulder, saying in a firm voice, "Don't worry. Whoever this is isn't getting close to Tara."

Willow nodded, "Did I tell you about how it went when Tara met my parents?"

"Only a couple of times." Buffy answered, smiling indulgently.

"Well I'm just so proud of her. I mean Mom was just looking for an excuse to not like her, but Tara didn't give her any. Of course Mom warmed to Tara once she found out that Tara had read her books." Willow grinned as she remembered the evening and how Tara had managed to impress her parents.

"So all those nights of research paid off."

"Yes." After they had gotten home that night Tara had admitted to Willow that since they had gotten serious she had been studying Sheila's writing in order to make a good impression.

***

"I told you that we should have chained Xander to the alter." Dawn pointed out. Xander had reached the altar then, overcome by panic, he had run off.

"I know." Buffy conceded, "But at least he came back this time and went through with the wedding." She, Dawn, Willow and Tara were resting, recovering from the day's events.

"I hate to think what Anya would have done this time if he hadn't," Willow said. Tara was sitting next to her, her head resting on Willow's shoulder. Her only contribution to the conversation being her soft snoring.

Buffy gave the two of them a hard look, "You better not put us through this sort of thing when it comes to your wedding."

"I promise we won't," Willow promised. "We'll come up with something original." Before Buffy could respond she went on, "Well I better get Sleeping Beauty to bed. Tara, honey, wake up."

"Huh?"

"It's time for bed."

As the two of them left Tara said sleepily, "I dreamt that Xander and Anya had gotten married."

"They have."

"Oh well, that explains it then."

***

It was still light when Willow and Tara got ready to go out, and the weather was nice, so they decided to walk to the restaurant. As they were approaching the building Willing pointed to a camper parked by the road. "Looks like your dad's already here."

"He normally arrives early for meetings. He's like you in that way." Seeing a look of distaste starting to form on Willow's face she quickly added, “Though that's the only thing you've got in common.”

Going in they spotted Mr Maclay and headed over to his table. He stood up when he saw them. "Hello Tara, Willow."

"Hello, sir," Tara replied as she and Willow sat down.

"I didn't really get to look round the last time I was here, so I spent the day seeing the sights."

Inwardly Willow thought that that couldn't have taken long, though she didn't say anything.

"I must say this certainly is a large and busy place. Tara, thinking about how quiet you were when you left, I'm surprised you were able to cope."

"Well it was difficult when I first came, but I was able to adjust."

"I guess it's a sign of how much you've grown." He stared at her a moment before saying, "Your mother would be proud of you." Then he added in a quiet voice, "I'm proud of you."

Tara blushed, not sure how to respond to that.

***

After the starter Tara went off to find the toilets. When she'd gone Donald looked up at Willow and said, "I feel like I ought to be asking you what your intentions are with my daughter."

"Well I love Tara, and I want to make her happy."

Donald nodded, "Good answer. I would like to say I'm happy for the two of you, but I can't." He was quiet a moment then said, "I'm an old fashioned man and I have old fashioned prejudices. That being said, I love my daughter and if being with you makes her happy then I can accept that."

Willow's first impulse was to argue, but realising how hard it must have been for him to admit this much she instead said, "Thank you. I know she'll appreciate that."

***

"Well that seemed to go well," Willow said as they got into the taxi. Donald had insisted they get one having heard some nasty stories about Sunnydale, especially at night. He guessed it was drug addicts since there always seemed to drug problems in big fancy towns like this one.

Tara smiled and said, "Any evening with my father where he doesn't denounce me as a demon is a good one. So what did the two of you talk about?"

"He basically just said he wasn't happy about the two of us being together but if it made you happy he'd accept it." Willow shook her head, "I think it's going to be a long wait before our parents get used to us."

"I know that I'd prefer it if our parents were happy for us but I guess I'll take grudging acceptance over outright rejection." She took Willow's hand. "I mean up till a few days ago I thought my father hated me."

"This must be weird for you."

"It is.” Tara sighed. “I'm still trying to get used to the idea."

The taxi pulled up outside their house.

"I think you're right. it's going to be a while before..." Tara stopped seeing something lying on the doorstep, "What's...” Tara stopped realising that it was a person, “Is that a body?”

They both approached carefully, not sure if this was someone needing their help or a vampire waiting to ambush the Slayer. Getting closer, they saw that it was Amy.

"What's she doing here?" Willow wondered. She quickly moved to check on the girl. "She's unconscious."

"I'll call an ambulance." Tara was already getting her keys out as she said this.

Going inside Tara was met by Dawn who asked, "How did it go?"

Instead of answering Tara said, "Amy's here." Tara glanced at the doorway, confusion and concern evident on her face. She snatched the phone off it's hook and began dialling for an ambulance.

"Is she in trouble? What does she want?"

"She's unconscious. I'm just going to call an ambulance for her."

Hey Justin--OK, so who's following Tara? And what the heck is up with Maclay pere? I always feel this kind of looming dread when he shows up...He's saying a lot of the right things, and if he is up to some scheme, he was probably smart not to go overboard; that is, I'd be shocked if he didn't have some problem with their relationship, considering his life-long uptightness and background.

And what's up with Amy? You know, she's another one whose arrival always sort of worries me though I have to confess, she doesn't appear in a position to do much harm right now...

Nice job, Justin!

Maccoda: Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying the story. :)

AntigoneUnbound:

Indeed if he'd reacted by being overjoyed at them being together and ripped his jacket off to reveal a Tee shirt saying, "I love my lesbian daughter" in big rainbow letters then it might have a bit suspicious.

And what's up with Amy? You know, she's another one whose arrival always sort of worries me though I have to confess, she doesn't appear in a position to do much harm right now...

So are Donald & Amy frogs or doughnuts?

Thanks for the feedback :)

The witches' hammer

Chapter 3

Willow and Tara went to visit Amy the next day. After asking at reception desk they were directed to the right ward.

"Ah we need to go left for the orange sector," Willow said, pointing at a sign.

"But the one we just passed said we needed to go right," Tara pointed out.

"Maybe one got turned around," Willow said. "But which one? Who would have thought finding your way round a hospital could be so hard."

"Maybe we should try some kind of spell," Tara suggested, a hint of a smile on her lips.

"I don't think we're that desperate yet, though if we don't find our way soon visiting hours will be over."

"Let's try left then."

After they'd been walking a while Willow stopped to glance around the part of the corridor they were in before saying, "Something tells me this is the orange section."

"You mean the fact that the walls are orange?" Tara asked.

"That was the first clue. The sign saying, 'Orange Section' was the second."

"Now we just need to find the right ward."

After spending ten minutes walking up and down the corridors they managed to find Amy's room. She was sitting in the bed at the end of the ward looking out the window. Hearing them approach she turned looking nervous at first, but smiling as she recognised the two witches, "Hi. For a moment I was worried you were nurses here to take more blood."

"How are you?" Tara asked.

"Just a bit dehydrated," Amy answered. She indicated the drip running into her arm. "This should fix that though.” Amy turned back to them, a look of gratitude in her eyes, “They said it was you who brought me in to the hospital."

"It was quite a shock to find you on our doorstep."

"To be honest I don't know how I ended up there." Amy frowned as she tried to remember the night before, and the events which had led up to her going to their house.

"Amy," Tara said, "How long have you been living on the streets?"

"Since we killed the great one's children."

"That was a few weeks ago," Willow said, "I know we haven't always seen eye to eye, but you should have come to us, we would have helped you."

Amy stared at Willow a moment, studying her, before saying, "Thank you. You're right, I should have done but I was too proud.”

"Well as soon as you get out of hospital, we'll help you find somewhere to stay," Tara said.

***

After Willow and Tara had left Amy started to feel bored so she went for a walk round the hospital, pushing the stand with her drip on it in front of her. She was starting to think that she was getting lost, with all the corridors looking the same, when she heard someone calling her name. Looking round she couldn't see anyone. Hearing her name being called again she realised it was coming from one of the wards. Opening the door she said, "Hello, is anyone in here?"

The sole occupant of the room seemed to be a young girl who was sleeping. Going in Amy couldn't see anyone else there. Noticing that the television had been left on with just static showing she picked up the remote control to turn it off before turning to go.

Amy was just at the door when she heard a voice saying, "Hi. Are you one of the nurses?"

"Oh no. Sorry to disturb you. It's just I was walking past and I thought I heard someone in here calling my name."

"There's just me in here."

"I must have been hearing things. Well I'll let you sleep."

"You don't have to go. I mean I've been feeling kind of lonely."

Moving back into the room Amy asked softly, "Don't you have any family?"

"No, not any more."

"I'm the same. My mother disappeared six years ago. My fathers still around but I haven't spoken to him in years,"

"Did you say your mother disappeared? There seems to be a lot of that in this town." Seeing Amy's questioning look she went on, "My sister, Lisa, disappeared twenty years ago. Sometimes I still think she's going to turn up, but that isn't going to happen, is it?"

Amy didn't know how to answer that, so instead she said, "I'm Amy, Amy Madison."

"Debbie Hamilton."

Looking over the girl's injuries Amy said, "What happened to you? You look like you've been through a meat grinder."

Laughing humourlessly Debbie said, "No, I was just tortured for a few days."

"I'm sorry."

"He kept asking me if I was a witch."

"Are you?"

Debbie looked at Amy as though she was crazy, "Of course not. He wouldn't believe me though."

***

When Amy had been let out of the hospital she went to the library and checked the archives of the papers. She found that in the last few weeks three women had been found burnt to death. Also autopsy's had revealed that there was very little smoke damage in their lungs, suggesting that whoever had killed them had wanted them to remain conscious as long as possible while they burned. Also there were signs that two of the women had been tortured using thumb screws.

***

Tara looked up from the books she was reading as the door to the Magic Box opened. "Hello Amy." Tara said cautiously. She still wasn't sure how far they could trust Amy.

"Hello."

"I have to say you look a lot better than you did last time I saw you."

"I feel a lot better too." She kept glancing nervously round the shop.

"Is something wrong?"

"No. I mean yes. Are Buffy and Giles here?"

"They're in the back room. What's up?"

Amy said, "There's someone hunting witches."

Coming out of the training room Giles said, "Amy, is something wrong?"

"Yes. Have you read the stories in the papers. About the women who have been burnt to death?"

"Yes, it's terrible. They're claiming it's a serial killer."

"The person responsible is hunting witches."

"The victims were all witches?" Tara asked.

"No," Amy answered. Seeing the confused looked everyone was giving her she went on, "But the person doing it thinks they are."

"How exactly do you know this?" Buffy asked.

"One of his victims got away. she told me he tortured her, trying to get her to admit to being a witch."

"Maybe we should look into this?" Tara suggested.

"Well as terrible as this is there's no evidence that this isn't a human doing this. In that case it's a matter for the police." Giles said.

"But..." Buffy started to argue.

"Remember we have the matter of the demon hiring vampires. If this is part of some ancient conflict we can't afford to be distracted."

Buffy nodded sadly. Turning to Amy she said, "Sorry, this really isn't something that concerns us."

"Fine. I'll look into this myself." Amy turned and stormed out of the shop.

As they went back into the training room Buffy said, "I don't like this."

"I know I don't either. But like I said we can't afford distractions at the moment. It's not your job to go after every murderer that comes into Sunnydale."

***

Getting up Tara left the shop, unnoticed by the others, and ran after Amy. "Amy, wait."

Spinning round, Amy demanded, "What?"

"I want to help."

"I thought this was beneath you, since it's just a human."

"Well the last time we had a run-in with human opponents things didn't end well for me but, more importantly Giles is wrong. This isn't just a distraction."

"So you really want to help?"

"Yes." Tara looked at her watch. "I'm due to go and meet Willow at the Espresso Pump. I'm sure she'll want to help too."

***

When they caught up with Willow and explained what was going on Willow immediately agreed to help. "This might not be anything demonic but the police haven't had any luck catching the guy using conventional methods. so why not bring some supernatural help to the matter?" Noticing the surprised look Amy was giving her she asked, "What?"

"I'm just surprised. I mean I've never known you to disagree with Buffy about anything. You always acted like she could never be wrong."

"Well maybe I wasn't all that confident before, but I've changed a lot since you knew me." As she said that she glanced over at Tara and smiled slightly.

Blushing under the attention Tara asked, "What's the plan?"

"We need to talk to Debbie get more details," Amy said.

"Why don't you two do that? I'll get into the police systems and try to get more information about her kidnapping and how she escaped."

***

Debbie walked into her home, kicking the door shut behind her, saying, "Well it's good to be home." She locked the door before going through into the kitchen. Sticking the kettle on she got our a jar of coffee and started heaping some into a mug.

Debbie jumped as the phone rang. Going out into the hall she picked up the phone. "Hello?"

A child like voice answered, speaking slowly as if it was having trouble talking, "De-bie. De-bie."

"Who is this?"

"De-bie, run. He's coming."

Debbie started to grow annoyed, she really wasn't in the mood for crank calls. "Listen you..."

"Run!"

A sense of dread coming over her, Debbie glanced out the door. There was a silhouette of a figure approaching, just visible through the frosted glass of the door. Oh God, how has he found me so fast? The phone slipped out of her hand as she turned and ran back into the kitchen. Going to the back door she grabbed the handle and tried to wrench it open. Her arm straining as the door refused to budge. Idiot! get the key. Spinning round she grabbed the key from it's hook and fumbled it into the lock. Out the front she could hear someone pounding on the door. Twisting the key around Debbie yanked the door open and ran outside, heading towards the back gate.

Run! Run, Debbie! You know, I got a bad feeling about Giles' "This isn't clearly demonic so we won't get involved" approach. Seems rather a specious line to draw...not to mention uncharitable. Fortunately, our girls are charitable enough to cover his deficit...

I find Amy to be a really interesting character here. She clearly has the capacity for compassion; yet W/T also know that she has a shaky past. How will this pan out...

I'm really enjoying this, Justin--nice work!

Missocki Firstly I love your avatar. It's really cute :)

I'm glad you're enjoying the story, thanks for the kind words.

AntigoneUnbound: Giles' decision to just focus on demonic threats could well cause problems for them.

I'm glad you're finding Amy an interesting character.

I hope you like where the story goes from here. Thanks for the feedback.

And now on with the show :)

The Witches' Hammer

Chapter 4

Willow opened her laptop up and hit the “On” button. As she waited for it to start up she thought about what she needed to do. Several years ago Willow, out of idle curiosity, had run a port scan on the police computers. She had been shocked and intrigued when she found several open ports. After a bit of checking she found that one of them was being monitored by an out-of-date mail program. She had used a quite widely known exploit in order to install a root kit on the system. Not because she wanted to use it, but just to see if she could. She had spent the next few weeks panicking whenever there was a knock at the door, expecting it to be the police, come to arrest her. Over time Willow had forgotten about the root kit as she was distracted by newer things to investigate.

Since she'd met Buffy, though, there had been several occasions where being able to access the police records had been of use. Every time she had to use it was fraught with worry. She was terrified that someone would have discovered her break in and was waiting to see who used it. The fact that this hadn't happened yet was a great relief, but was also a disappointment, since it proved just how lax the Sunnydale police force was.

Once her laptop was up and running Willow connected to the police computer and used the back door that she had set up in order to access their database of crime reports.. First she went to the report of Debbie's kidnapping. She saw that Debbie had been grabbed by a nondescript man who had bundled her into his van before driving off. She also saw that there was a recording from a nearby CCTV camera attached to the file. She started it downloading and then went to the report for the officer who had found Debbie. It said that the police had received an anonymous call telling them where to find her. A note said that the caller seemed to be a child and that they had had trouble speaking.

Willow noticed that the file had downloaded. She watched Debbie coming down the street and a van pull up beside her. A man jumped out and grabbed Debbie. She tried to struggle but he was obviously too strong for her. Annoyingly it was never possible to make out anything about the attacker. Then something happened. It was so quick and unexpected that Willow had to rewind the film and watch it again at a slower speed. Just as the man was bundling Debbie into his van something just out of view gave off a flash of light, causing him to look round in shock. In doing so he looked directly at the camera, giving Willow a perfect view of his face. Willow captured and printed out a picture of him then sat back as she wondered what had caused the light.

***

Tara and Amy approached a small house on the outskirts of Sunnydale. Whilst Willow was doing the computer thing they had gone to the hospital to see Debbie, only to be told that she had been discharged. They had managed to talk the nurse into giving them her address though, which was where they were headed.

"I don't like the look of this," Amy said, gesturing at the door which had obviously been kicked in.

Tara didn't say anything, silently agreeing with Amy's summary. They went to the door and Tara called out, "Hello, is anyone in here?"

Not getting any answer they pushed the door open and went in. There was a beeping sound coming from the phone but everything else was silent.

"Do you think he's gotten her?"

"I don't know," Tara said, "There doesn't seem to have been a struggle." Going through into the kitchen she said, "The back door's open. Maybe she got out before he arrived."

"Well she obviously left in a hurry," Amy said as she picked up the phone receiver and put it back on the hook.

"I'm surprised no one called the police."

"This is Sunnydale, where looking the other way is second nature."

Coming back into the hall Tara said, "Well then we'd better do it."

"What do we tell them?"

"That we were walking past and saw that the door had been broken."

***

Willow walked down Main Street a little surprised at how quiet it was. It was normally busy but there was almost no one around. Something else was wrong, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. As she walked past an electronics shop she realised what it was. The shop had a large display of televisions which were normally on, but today they were all off. Looking closer Willow saw that they all seemed to be broken.

Willow walked over to the spot where Debbie had been grabbed and, looking round, she soon spotted the camera that had recorded the incident. It was then that she worked out what had caused the flash. It must have been the televisions blowing. This made her wonder, was it just a coincidence that made them blow at just the right time to make him look directly at the camera or was something else at work here.

Willow heard something moving behind her and spun round, expecting to see some kind of demon charging at her. Instead she just saw a crisp packet being blown along by the wind. "You're getting paranoid in your old age," Willow mumbled to herself. Still she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.

***

They gathered at the Magic Box to discuss what they had found out. "So this guy takes Debbie to his flat, tortures her for a couple of days and then just mysteriously vanishes. At the same time the police get a strange call telling them where to find Debbie," Willow said, "There's something odd going on."

"Maybe there is," Amy said, "But that doesn't change the fact we have to find her before he does, if he hasn't already."

"Maybe we should check the place where he was holding Debbie," Tara suggested, "There might be something there that will lead us to him."

"I'll go with you," Willow said.

"I was going see if I could find anything out about the previous deaths," Amy said.

***

Giles was standing behind the counter. He glanced over at the three witches, troubled by something. He wasn't sure what, though. Not having anything else to do he got out the copy of Tara's poem Willow had given him.

One is for the key, weak yet strong,

Two is for the slayers, doomed to die young,

Three is for the witches...

Giles looked over at the three women. He glanced at the poem then back at the others. "Oh dear."

***

As they were walking to the flat Willow said, "There's something I didn't mention before. When I went to look over where Debbie had been kidnapped. I got kind of a weird feeling. That I was being watched or something. Of course it could just be paranoia," Willow finished with a shrug.

"Well this is Sunnydale, Weird feelings are something of... Oh!"

"What?"

"This was on Main Street wasn't it?'

"Yes."

"When you were kidnapped I was walking down there. One moment it was empty, the next I was surrounded by children. Then they just vanished again."

"That is weird. You didn't tell anyone?"

"Well at the time I was focused on finding you. I guess it slipped my mind."

"So maybe there is something going on in that street, but I don't think it relates to what's happening now."

"No. We need to stop this killer before we deal with that, whatever it is."

***

Moving aside the crime scene tape they entered the apartment. The first room they came to was a sparsely furnished one with a chair, a stove, a worktop and a knocked over table. "I guess this is where he tortured Debbie," Willow said. Walking over to the worktop Willow looked at the tools laid out there. She couldn't help shuddering as she considered what the women who had been held here must have gone through.

"And probably the other women."

Turning Willow noticed from Tara's expression that she felt the same way that Willow did. “I hate to think about what went on here.”

Tara nodded. “I guess this is where he got his inspiration.” She held up a book. The cover read, Malleus Maleficarum.

“The Witches' Hammer,” Willow whispered.

Tara threw the book down, as though holding it disgusted her. They went through a creaky wooden door into the next room. which turned out to be a small bedroom.

"So he slept here," Tara said, surveying the makeshift bed.

"He must have taken a disliking to electrical equipment," Willow commented. There was a radio, television and telephone, all of which had been smashed. There was a large mallet lying through the screen of the television. "So what caused him to go through his vandalism spree."

"I've got a better question," Tara said. She held up the plug for the television, "Did he unplug the television before or after he smashed it?"

"It gets weirder," Willow said. She held up the plug for the telephone, "I think there's more to this than just a madman who thinks he's part of the Inquisition."

***

Debbie sat in the Sunnydale bus station, occasionally taking nervous glances at the time table. After everything that had happened she felt it was a good time to take a short break from Sunnydale. The fact that she had left her home open didn't trouble her at all.

Getting up and stretching her legs Debbie started towards the cafe, hoping some tea would calm her down. She stopped as one of the phones started ringing. She was about to start moving again when she was grabbed from behind. Something cold and sharp was pressed against her throat as a voice whispered, "If you make a sound I'll cut your throat."

Suddenly all the telephones started ringing. As the man dragged her towards the exit he said, "Your demon won't save you this time."

Out of the corner of her eye Debbie saw the screen showing the timetables change to show her being forced out. Seeing this a porter started towards them saying, "Hey what's going on?"

The man shoved Debbie to the floor and pulled a short club out from his jacket. As the porter got close the man charged at him and struck him round the head. The porter fell to the floor, a thin streak of blood running from his forehead.

Debbie had been trying to get up but the man kicked her in the side, knocking her over. He then grabbed Debbie and pulled her up, before forcing her out to his van.

Hey Justin--OK, this guy is officially pissing me off. The whole recurring concept of the electronic devices is an intriguing one, and I like that they seem to be working on the behalf of the person in danger. How DID that flash occur? And the surveillance cameras?

I like the palpable creepiness we get when Willow, Tara, and Amy walk into what amounts to a torture chamber. This is just a whole 'nother brand of evil.

Cool story, Justin, with some very intriguing elements!

The Witches' Hammer

Chapter 5

Willow awoke to a pale light flickering across the room. Waking up more she realised the television was on, showing static. Grabbing the remote Willow turned the TV off before lay back down.

Not able to go straight back to sleep Willow thought about the voice that had been plaguing Tara. She didn't like the idea of mysterious voices bothering her girl. The problem was she didn't know how to find out where it was coming from. using the "pull back the curtain" trance might give them some information but probably only if they used it while Tara was being talked to. Since there seemed to be no way of knowing when that would happen and the contact was always so brief that would be nearly impossible.

Willow was interrupted from her thoughts as the room was again bathed in light. Realising that the television had come on again she reached over to turn the light on. Rubbing her eyes, Willow swung her legs out of bed and walked over to the television. Willow pushed the off switch. The television flicked off, but then came on again. After showing static a moment, it switched to a heavily distorted image of, what seemed to be a young girl.

"Help Debbie!" the girl screamed. "Help Debbie! Help Debbie!"

"Willow, what's going on?" Tara asked, her voice thick with sleep.

"The television's shouting at me." Willow leaned over to yank the plug out of the socket.

The television kept imploring, "Help Debbie! Help Debbie!"

There was a knock at the door. "Guys? Can you turn the TV down?" Buffy asked.

"Buffy, can you come in here?" Willow tried to keep her voice calm, despite being wigged by what was going on. Part of her was expecting the girl to climb out of the television and attack her.

Buffy came in asking, "What's wrong?"

In reply Willow just held up the power cable.

Buffy looked at the cable, then the television, then the cable. "Okay that's new."

At that point the radio came to life, "Help Debbie! Help Debbie! Help Debbie!" A moment later the phone started ringing.

"Alright!" Willow shouted, "We get the message, we'll help Debbie."

Everything went quiet.

"I felt something,” Tara said. “I mean other than the obvious. Some sort of presence.”

"Some kind of monster?" Buffy guessed.

"I don't know. It didn't feel malevolent, just desperate. Willow, what do you think?"

Willow nodded in response.

"Um, guys, I kind of feel like I'm missing half the movie," Buffy complained.

"We think that Inquisition guy has kidnapped her again."

Buffy didn't seem any the wiser.

"The serial killer," Willow explained, "You know, the one you were too busy to do anything about." Even as she said it Willow was surprised at how harsh she was being.

"Willow, I..." Buffy stopped not sure what to say.

As the silence dragged on Tara broke it, saying, "I'll go and phone Amy. She'll want to help."

***

Amy arrived ten minutes later. Willow and Tara quickly explained what had happened and they began discussing what to do.

"We could try a location spell, but we need something of Debbie's," Tara said.

"You mean something like this." Amy held up a necklace.

"You stole a necklace?" Willow asked.

"No, when we saw Debbie was missing I thought we might need to do a detection spell. So I took the necklace."

"Okay," Willow said. "That was good thinking."

Buffy watched while they set up the spell and went about casting it. She tried to follow what was happening but soon gave up on that and decided to leave them to it. Even with her lack of knowledge with magical matters it was still pretty clear to her that the spell wasn't going as the witches had hoped. After they'd been trying a while Willow opened her eyes, a look of frustration in her eyes. "This isn't working."

"What's wrong?" Buffy asked.

"Something's blocking us. I think it might be the killer."

"How though?" Amy asked.

"That isn't as important as how we're going to find him," Buffy said.

"So you're in now are you?" Amy asked.

"Looks that way. So what's plan B?"

Willow looked sheepish as she admitted, "Uh, we're still working on that."

"It's a pity the strange voice girl couldn't give us any hints."

Whilst they had been talking Tara had been thinking quietly. Looking up she said, "I have an idea. Whatever's blocking us from finding Debbie will block us from finding anything nearby."

"True."

"So if we can tune the detection spell to look for something which should be everywhere..."

"Then the one place it isn't will be where he is." Willow finished.

"Will it be possible to tune the spell to do that?" Amy asked.

"It should be. Though it might take some time."

"There's just one problem," Buffy said, "There are probably other people who are trying to avoid detection. So won't we get a lot of false positives? I mean this is Sunnydale."

"True," Willow said, "but at least this will help cut down the search."

Whilst the others got the new spell ready Buffy went to get everything ready for the rescue operation. Since it was a human they were going after Buffy fetched the tranquilliser gun and made sure it was loaded. She then fetched some other weapons, just in case there were any demons lurking in the area, which they had a tendency to do.

When she went back to the others Willow was leaving them, "The spell worked. We got a number of possibilities. I'm just going to try to narrow them down."

"How are you going to do that?"

"Whenever you're uncertain about things, there's just one thing you need to remember, Google is your friend." Buffy started to walk past but stopped as Willow said, "Buffy, about what I said before, I shouldn't have said that."

"It hurt Will," Buffy said, "Mainly because it's true. We were wrong to ignore this."

Willow used the satellite images on Google maps in order to check out the places that the spell showed as blocking detection. After going through them she had narrowed the search down to five possibilities.

***

Frederick Carlson knelt down beside Debbie and looked at her with a mixture of concern and confusion. This was always the hard part, getting the heretic to admit to her sins. It was something that had to be done, yet it still pained him. This one was proving to be especially difficult. "Why are you being so stubborn?"

Debbie wasn't sure about the answer to that. Ever since he had recaptured her, part of her had decided it would be easier to just say what he wanted her to say. It was obvious there would be no end to the pain until she did. Yet despite that a part of her refused to give in. Refused to let him beat her. She'd always known her stubbornness would get her into trouble one day. "Why are you doing this?" Debbie managed to ask in response.

"I'm doing this for you. If you don't confess and accept God's love into your life, you will be denied access into heaven." Standing he went on, "That is why I am doing this, why I won't stop doing this till you have confessed." Saying this he walked over to a stove and putting on thick gloves he picked up a pair of pliers. The tips had been heated till they were red hot, in order to prevent bleeding.

***

The third place they checked was an abandoned office building. It had been built last year, but no one had rented the office space. Eventually the company that had gone out of business. Shortly after they had found a group of demons living in the basement, driving everyone away. Buffy had vanquished them but their influence had remained; stopping anyone from buying the property, or wanting to go near it.

"I hope this is the place," Buffy moaned. Whilst Debbie and the killer hadn't been at the last two places there had been people there who hadn't exactly been pleased by the arrival of the slayer and three witches.

"Well there's someone there." Amy pointed up at a window on the third floor, where a light was on.

"Okay then, let's go." They hurried up to the third floor. Walking down the hallway they ran into a man coming the other way.

"Hello," Buffy said, "We're Jehovah's Witnesses and we're wondering if you would like to subscribe to the Watch Tower."

"Witch." The man growled.

"No that's these..."

"You'll burn along with your friend." With that he turned and charged at her. A moment later he found himself lying on his back. Jumping up he drew a knife, "Your magic won't save you."

"Buffy, look out," Willow called.

Ignoring her friend, Buffy snatched the knife from the man, tossing it away before punching him.

"You won't escape God's Justice," He said before turning and running down the hall.

"You help Debbie, I'll go after him," Buffy called as she started after him.

"I'll come with you," Amy said.

Reaching a junction Buffy looked both ways saying, "We can't have lost him."

"We'll have to split up," Amy said. Looking one way she spotted a sign for the stairwell. Pointing the other way she said, "You go that way."

Buffy nodded and headed off. Amy went to the stairwell and listened. She could hear the man running up the stairs.

***

The man slammed the door open and ran out onto the roof. Looking round he soon saw the fire escape and ran towards it.

He was about to start climbing down when a voice said, "You know, I'm glad that you decided to run."

Turning he saw a young woman nearby. She didn't look dangerous but then again neither had the other one, the one they had called Buffy.

"Do you know why? Because the others can't kill you, because they're good guys."

"What about you?"

"Me?" Amy swung her hand towards him and a pulse of force flew towards him. Hitting him in the chest it sent him flying off the edge. Amy walked up to the edge of the roof and looking down at Carlson's broken body she said, "I'm still figuring that out."

She walked back down to join the others. She met up with Buffy coming back the other way.

"What happened?" Buffy asked. She had given up the search after seeing Carlson fall past a window.

"He fell." Amy noticed that Buffy was watching her with a doubtful expression . She stared at her, silently challenging her to say something. Buffy remained silent.

"Debbie, what's wrong?" They heard Willow call from the other room, "Debbie!"

Going through they found Willow and Tara alone. "She got all agitated and ran off," Willow explained.

"We need to go after her," Tara said, starting to do just that.

***

Amy was going to follow the others when she noticed something. There was a feeling of magic in the room. It was faint, Amy only noticed it because it had a familiar pattern to it. Opening a drawer, Amy found a necklace there. Lifting it up, she whispered, “What are you doing here?”

***

Willow and Tara saw Debbie disappear into a cave and quickly followed her into it.

"Lisa, where are you?" They heard Debbie shouting. They were able to follow the sound of her voice, The faint light from the entrance just barely lighting their path.

Then they lost the sound of Debbie's voice, drowned out by water running round them.

"What's that?" Tara asked.

"Must be an underground river." Pulling out a small vial Willow smashed it while shouting, "Illuminos." The passage was lit up and they quickly followed it.

The passage led them into a large cavern. Scattered round the cavern were the bones of tens of young children. Debbie was kneeling off to one side, sobbing gently. There was a light floating above her. For a moment it looked like a young girl, then it faded away.

"Debbie," Tara said, walking towards her.

Debbie stood up, a gold necklace dangling from her fingers. "This was my mother's," She said, "She gave it to my sister just before she died."

"I'm so sorry," Tara said as she went over to hug Debbie.

***

Tara and Amy took Debbie to the hospital and spent the rest of the day with her while the others were researching. Willow met her on the way home saying, "The official story is the children were killed by wild animals."

"And the unofficial story?"

"It was a Craylar demon. It was snatching the children from Main Street and killing them. No one knows why it does this, since it doesn't eat them."

"So do we have to deal with this demon?"

Willow shook her head, "The stories about children disappearing end about three years ago. We're not entirely sure what happened to it but it does seem to be coincidental that it stopped just as the Initiative were getting started. Our best theory is they captured or killed it."

"The children were taken from Main street? So the ones I saw..."

"Were probably their spirits. Also it's probably the cause of the strange feeling I had there."

"Well once their bodies have been buried, hopefully they'll be able to find rest."

***

Debbie was sitting in a wheelchair next to a large lake, her head bowed. A small urn in her hands. Willow and Tara were standing nearby her, their hands linked.

"When I was four one of the older boys started picking on me. He was about ten, but he thought it terribly brave to pick on a four year old. One day he tripped me up. Before I even knew what was going on Lisa charged over and started hitting him. He was twice her size but that didn't stop her." Debbie smiled as she remembered the incident, "When I asked her about it she said that just before Mom died she had made her promise to look after me and that she took that promise seriously." Debbie stopped a moment. She lifted the urn up a moment, but then lowered it again. Turning to Willow and Tara she said, "She's still keeping that promise isn't she?"

"Yes sweetie," Tara said, "We think she is."

Debbie nodded, then turned back to the lake. Taking the lid off of the urn she said, "Goodbye Lisa, be at peace." With that she poured the ashes into the lake.

***

A short distance away Buffy and Giles were watching the proceedings. "We were wrong." Buffy said, "This is something we should have been involved in, from the start."

"Well we weren't to know there was a supernatural element," Giles said.

"Even if there hadn't we still should have been involved."

Giles took his glasses off and getting a hanky out began polishing them. After a moment he said, "Yes, you're quite right."

Hey Justin...Great story! I love the moral backdrop: how do we decide which battles are ours to fight, and which do we leave for others? Methinks Giles will have some serious mulling to do over that very question. And speaking of questions, it looks like Amy has one of her own, doesn't she? It seemed to me that she truly felt for Debbie, and anyone w/ the capacity for compassion would seem to have some element of good within her/him. But her trigger finger sure is a might itchy...

I also love the idea of protection offered by a loved one who has gone before us. The fierce older sister, breaking through barriers to protect her sibling...

Finally, I have to say that I got what is almost certainly an immoral chuckle out of this line:
"What happened?" Buffy asked. She had given up the search after seeing Carlson fall past a window.

Yeah, that would probably make me call off the search, too.

Nice work, Justin.

Hello there justin
I don't think you remember me from the post at the first chaps of your fic. But here I am again. I've been kindda the lurker for a while then I thought "What the hell, stop making excuses and review the story already" so I do.
The story keeps the "It's great" nivel :clap I love how things bond together as the fic goes on. And it's so touchy how family relationships progress into scooby gang with the trust, quarrels, silly fight, care and all.

Continue soon, you're doing a nice work.

Yeah, there does seem to be a question mark over her. So did she kill Carlson because his hunting witches hit a nerve or does it point to her believing she has a moral right to execute people she sees as wrong doers?

I also love the idea of protection offered by a loved one who has gone before us. The fierce older sister, breaking through barriers to protect her sibling...

Origionaly this part wasn't in the story, but I think it improves the story a lot.

Thanks for all your feedback and help with writing this story.

Viximon:

I love how things bond together as the fic goes on.

As a long time Babylon 5 fan, I like stories where seemingly disparate plot points all tie together as the story progresses.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you're enjoying the story.

News:

I've started work on the 6th part and so far I've written...

the title :blush

I've got this week off and I'm hoping I'll be able to start posting it early next month.

I am reallly sorry that I have been neglecting one of my favorite stories. I re-read the whole thing today (since I missed quite a lot of updates). I really love the way how you added the parents to the mix. It always bugged me that the show didnt deal with the Rosenberg's meeting Tara. I hope Mr. Maclay is genuine this time around ;)
Keep up the good work!!!

I'm glad you're still enjoying the story. You're right it would have been nice to seen Tara meeting the Rosenbergs. I don't know, sometimes it seemed like the writers were under the impression that the show was supposed to be about Buffy *shrug* but that's just crazy

I hope Mr. Maclay is genuine this time around

You'll find out next part

The next part was delayed by computer problems, but I'm hoping to be able to start posting it in the next few days.

Family Redux

Chapter 1

Amy picked up a pile of books from the counter and walked over to the shelves to put them away. Following their encounter with the serial killer Giles had spoken to the owner of a nearby bookshop and had gotten her a job as an assistant. Amy was grateful for this, though she couldn't help wondering if he had gotten her a job so nearby in order to keep an eye on her. Amy sighed as she put the books down on a chair and began placing them on the shelf. It might not be a great job but at least she made enough in order to rent a small flat, which beat living on the streets.

“Amy.”

She froze, still in the middle of putting the book away. She slowly pushed the book into place, then turned around. As with all the other times the voice had spoken to her, there was no one there.

“What do you want?”

“I want to warn you. Things are going to get difficult around here. Do you really want to stick around to watch the fireworks?”

“What should I do?”

“Do? Do? That should be obvious. Just turn into a little rat and run away. It's all you're good for.”

“Hey!” Amy stopped, sensing that the voice had left. She rubbed her eyes. “You're cracking up, Amy.” She was broken from these thoughts by the bell above the door ringing. “Hey, Tara.”

“Hello Amy, I wanted to see how you were doing.”

“Oh well, you know, surviving.” Amy turned and went back to work.

Tara walked over to her realising, as she did so, that she still didn't feel entirely comfortable round the other woman. You still blame her for what happened to Willow, she thought. She knew it wasn't fair, since Willow had already been heading on a downward spiral before she turned Amy back into a human, but that didn't mean that Amy hadn't helped her along. Tara rejected these thoughts, telling herself that Amy had been as much a victim of Rack's influence as Willow had.

“There was something I wanted to show you.” Amy walked over to the desk and opening a drawer, she threw a medallion to Tara.

Tara saw it was a picture of the Virgin Mary. She looked back up Amy, not sure what it meant.

“That serial killer, um, Carlson, had it. It was what was blocking our location spell.”

Tara turned the amulet over in her hand, trying to gain some insight into who had made it. “So why did a self-appointed witch finder have a magical amulet?”

“I don't know, but the only reason I found it was I recognised the magic contained in it.” An expression of disgust passed over her face a moment as she said, “Ethan.”

“Ethan Rayne?” Tara looked surprised. “Why would he...” Tara stopped as she guessed at the reason. “I guess he thought helping a serial killer would be a good way to spread chaos.”

Amy nodded. “It's something he would do.”

“Have you had any luck? Finding Ethan, I mean.”

“Not yet, no.” There was a coldness to her voice as she said this.

“And what do you plan on doing?”

“What do you think? He killed my cousin, I'm going to make him pay for that.”

***

As Tara returned home she was greeted by Buffy. “Hey Tara, there was a big envelope for you.” She turned to the shelf and began rummaging through the pile of letters. “It was here somewhere,” She muttered to herself.

“Uh, Buffy.” When Buffy turned to her Tara held up the large envelope which had been left by the door. “Is this it?”

“Oh yeah, that's where I put it. It looks like it's from your home state.”

Tara nodded. “Thanks.”

***

Tara rushed up to her room with the envelope. Pushing her thumb in one end, Tara started to open the envelope, but then stopped. She had no idea what it contained and a part of her wasn't sure that she wanted to know. With a sense of anxiety, she ripped open the end. The first thing she found was two pieces of cardboard. Pulling them out Tara found a photo between them, a picture of her and her mother. Tara sat still a while staring at the picture. She could well remember when it had been taken. It had been just a month before her mother had grown ill. She was wearing a necklace that Donald had just given her.

Finally putting the picture down Tara looked in the envelope, finding a single sheet of letter paper.

Dear Tara

I am writing to you for two reasons. I found this picture of you and Melissa a couple of weeks ago and I thought that you might like to have it.

Secondly I was wondering if you'd like to come and visit us over the weekend. I've been making some changes to the farm and would like to show you around them. I know you may not feel entirely comfortable about this, given our history, so if it makes you feel better, then I'd like you to ask your friends to come with you.

Hoping to hear from you soon

Your father

Donald Maclay

Tara stared at the letter a few moments. It was short and to the point, like most of her father's letters. Tara thought about his request. Did she want to visit her father and brother? Looking back on her childhood she realised that she had never felt like his daughter, just someone who lived in the same house. A servant at best, at worst a slave. Yet, after his visit, Tara had started to see Donald as being a father. At least she had recognised the possibility of his becoming one. The problem was, she was still worried it might turn out to be a trick. She wasn't worried that he might force her to stay and look after the farm. There had been a time when her father could control her but that time was long gone. Tara's main worry was that after having gotten her hopes up, she wasn't sure she could take the disappointment. Picking up the letter and photo and putting them in the letter rack, Tara resolved to talk to Willow about it.

***

At that moment Willow was walking home with Anya. Anya was explaining her latest successes on the stock market. “So I started diversifying my stock portfolio and I'm making a much greater return, with less risk,”

“Yeah, that's great,” Willow answered in a subdued voice. She was looking downwards, obviously lost in thought.

“Well thanks for the enthusiasm,” Anya complained. “You know Tara was much better at faking it.”

Willow spun round, her expression shocked. “Tara doesn't fake it!”

“I mean enthusiasm.” Anya looked bemused as she said this. There were lots of times when she had trouble understanding Willow.

“Oh, yeah.” Willow's face started to go red. “I knew that.”

“Really Willow, what's up?”

“I got back my grades for one of my courses.”

“You didn't fail did you? Because that's a sure sign of an impending apocalypse.”

“No, I got top marks.”

“So, why unhappy?”

“It just made me realise some things. I mean I'm probably going to complete the course with top marks but... I don't know what I'm going to do with my life. I mean sure I'm doing great at college but at some point I'll have to leave. What then?”

Anya patted Willow on the arm. “You'll do the same thing as the rest of us, surely. Fight demons and die young.”

“Uh, thanks Anya.”

Anya grinned. “Happy to help.”

***

When Willow got in she went straight up to see Tara. As she went through the doorway she was greeted by a kiss. After they'd broken apart Willow said, “I hope you don't greet everyone like that.”

“No, just the cute redheads,” Tara responded. Tara couldn't help smiling at the slightly panicky look Willow gave her. She's so adorable when she's jealous. “Who happen to be called Willow Rosenberg.”

“Well I guess I'm lucky that that's my name.” Spotting the picture Willow picked it up saying, “Is this you when you were younger?”

Tara nodded. “That's my mom. My dad sent it to me.”

“That's nice. We should find a frame for it.”

“Also he said he wants me to come visit.”

“He does?” Willow sounded uncertain. “I'm not sure how to put this, which is something of a first for me, but he is your father and I don't want to say anything which would offend you because being offended is bad and I'm all against it and...”

“You're not sure if we can trust him. If he has really changed.”

Willow just nodded, hoping she hadn't hurt Tara's feelings too much.

Tara nodded. “Don't worry, I've got the same doubts. He doesn't just want me to go, he's invited all of us.”

“So do you want to go?”

Tara considered this. Up till now she hadn't known what the answer was. “Yes, I'd like to.”

“Then we're going.”

***

The news was greeted by Dawn and Buffy with some enthusiasm, but less so by Anya.

“As much as I'd like to come, who'll look after the shop while I'm gone.”

“It's only a couple of days,” Dawn said.

“Yes, during the weekend.”

“I'm sure we'll be able to work something out.”

“I'll call Giles,” Buffy said.

As Buffy went to phone Giles Anya said, “Don't get me wrong I want to help. It's just we've only just got back from the honeymoon and we're still getting into the swing of married life.”

Tara nodded. “I understand.”

Buffy came back at that point. “Giles can't make it. He's in the middle of some important research. Wouldn't say what it was but that he didn't want to interrupt it.”

“So it looks like it's just the four of us,” Tara said.

***

They got packed up on Thursday, so that they could leave the next day once everyone was home, in order to get to the motel before it became too dark.

Willow went up to her room to get the bags. She found Tara sitting on their bed staring into space. “Tara, are you alright?”

Standing Tara tried to smile, but the effect wasn't entirely convincing. “I was just thinking.”

“About anything in particular?”

“About going home. Thinking about what it's going to be like.”

Willow nodded. “You're not sure what your father's going to do.”

“That's not all.” Tara hesitated, her brow creased. “He did a lot of things, which I'm not sure that I can forgive, or forget.”

“I know you haven't told me everything about your childhood...” Willow stopped, not sure how to go on.

“It's not that I want to keep it from you, it's just there are some things it's hard to think about.”

Willow walked over to Tara and rested her hand on Tara's arm. “If you don't want to go, then you don't have to.”

Tara shook her head. “No, I need to go.” She turned to look out the window, saying in a small voice, “I need to not be afraid of him any more.”

“What?”

Tara decided she didn't want to explain the comment at this moment, so instead she said, “We should get our bags down to the car.”

Grabbing a bag Willow went downstairs. As she was going outside Buffy stopped her. “Our bags are in the car. What about you guys?”

Willow nodded. “We've got one more bag.”

“Good. Hopefully we should be able to get there before it's too dark.”

Willow put the bag in the back and slammed the trunk shut. Turning she saw Tara coming out of the house. “Have you got the maps?”

“Right here,” Tara patted her bag.

“So shall we get going?” Buffy said, starting towards the car.

“Um, aren't we forgetting someone?” Willow asked, an eyebrow raised.

Buffy looked round the group of people then walked back to the door. Opening it she shouted in, “Dawn come on, we're ready to go.”

Dawn appeared in the doorway. “Alright, I was just making sure my experiments were okay.”

“Experiments?” Buffy shook her head. “Forget it, I don't want to know.” With that they all bundled into the car and Willow backed it out of the driveway.

***

The beast slept.

It had come to the town of Carolfield almost a hundred years ago, drawn there by rivalries and petty hatreds that often built up in isolated communities like this one. Drawn by a darkness that permeated the town, a darkness which even the beast couldn't comprehend. It corrupted everything that it touched. The water. The air. The people.

In some the corruption was great, overwhelming them; in others it was barely noticeable. There had only been two people who hadn't been affected. A mother and her daughter. The mother had died and the daughter had left, one of the few to leave this place. Most seemed to stay there most of their lives.

The beast never understood the darkness, but it did understand the results. For a long time it had remained under the town, feeding on the hatred and despair. Only occasionally did it act to help things a long, Pushing a long simmering conflict to boiling point, or reminding people of a long forgotten wrong.

Not now though. For now the beast slept.
