Title: Halfway Across The World

Author: Cath

Email Address: CathyTombs@aol.com

Rating: PG-13

Spoilers: None

Disclaimers: All characters belong to Joss Whedon and Mutant Enemy

Feedback: Yes! Yes! Yes! I mean, if that’s okay

Pairing: Willow & Tara, obviously

Summary: Pretty much says all in the title. Willow and Tara go halfway across the world. I never was any good at writing summaries, sorry!

Author's Notes:: This is my 3rd - I think it's third - fic posted on the board, and I hope to get past my record of three pages! This may take longer than my other fics, what with exams drawing dangerously near...

CHAPTER 1 – Trying To Check Lists

“Passports?”

“Check.”

“Plane tickets?”

“Hang on, I know I put them somewhere… here they are! Check.”

“Currency exchange thing?”

Tara Maclay couldn’t help but smile at her girlfriend’s way of organising things. Willow Rosenberg, the younger of the couple, was not always tidy but always ready. Tara hadn’t been surprised when, two months before they were due to leave, Willow had printed out a twelve-page plan of what they had to take. At that moment they were in their bedroom in the Summers house, Willow standing in front of the dresser poring over the papers and Tara sitting cross-legged on the bed, two large suitcases in front of her and belongings scattered all over the double bed and rug covering the hardboard floor. She glanced around as Willow called out the item, spotted the strange technical gadget lying underneath her underwear and pulled it out. She stuffed it in their day bag, glanced over at Willow's bowed head and slyly slipped her panties over the short red hair. The young Wiccan looked up, flushed, and took the panties off rather more slowly than someone else might have done. Tara grinned at her cheekily.

“Check.”

“Suitcases?”

Tara laughed. “Oh, c’mon, Will, like we’re going to forget our suitcases. Almost all of the stuff you called out is in the suitcase.”

“Suitcases?” Willow repeated stubbornly, her pen poised on the paper.

“Check.” Tara managed to say through her giggles. “Will, you really do take the biscuit.” She reached forwards, unable to control herself, and grasped the redhead around her waist.

“Now, now, baby, Xander’ll be here in half an hour.” Willow tried to scold, but just staring into Tara’s beautiful blue eyes made her want to melt into her lover’s arms. “Ooh. O-okay.” Tara pressed her lips against Willow’s neck gently, kissing her again and again. “Tara, stop!” Willow burst out finally, a stupid smile spreading from ear to ear. Tara moved her head back so she could look Willow in the eye, and laughed again as she saw the hungry expression on her girlfriend’s face. “Back to the list.” Willow struggled out of Tara’s grasp reluctantly, glancing down at the paper in her hand.

“Toothbrushes?”

“Willow!”

Willow shrugged and tried to look innocent. “It’s just the way I wrote it down. If you’re doubting my techniques…” She trailed off meaningfully and slowly licked her lips. Tara’s gaze fell to those soft, warm, succulent… NO!

“Now see what you made me do.” Tara retorted grumpily, looking down at her cotton blue blouse. The buttons had all been mysteriously undone, how she would never know, and her red lace bra was in full view. “You made me get all undressed.”

Willow lifted her hand tentatively, her fingers itching to touch. “My dear, you brought that upon yourself.”

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

The two women smiled at each other, lighting up their pretty faces. Willow moved her hand closer to Tara’s body, her pulse quickening, reaching greedily to pull off that top and expose those slender, bare shoulders.

“Right, we really need to finish checking off the list.” She said, grasping ahold of the collar and pulling the blouse down. Tara stood still, her own heart thumping with anticipation, cheering herself silently that she had gotten her girlfriend ‘distracted’. “As soon as…” Willow swallowed, feeling a static electricity shoot through her as fingers came to flesh. “Just as soon as…” She bit her lip anxiously, glancing at the silver watch dangling off her wrist. “Xander’ll be here in twenty.”

Tara couldn’t resist. Reaching up with her own arm, she drew her fingers through Willow’s silky soft red hair. Wrong decision, she thought as Willow snapped out of her trance and backed away reluctantly, woken by the movement. Damn.

“Put those breasts away, baby, we got work to do.”

Tara pouted and reluctantly pulled her blouse back over her shoulders.

Tara: No, I-I understand. You have to be with the person you l-love.

Willow: I am.

Thank you guys for the feedback, it's really encouraged me and I hope you'll keep replying, I need all the help I can get! :wink

SAULE77: Thanks! I thought the self-control thing would be funny. I never was that good at writing humour fics despite the fact that I'm a giggler :lol so please tell me if I'm bombing, won't you?

SNUGGLE79: Thank you. I've read quite a few fics with vixeny Tara and I liked them so I thought, what the heck, I'll try it meself!

PIPER: I agree, very bad Willow! I always worry that I end up making it just plain stupid, not funny, I seem to do that a lot :cry You'll tell me, right? Scold me when I turn the readers away, right? Right? :paranoid

GRIMMY: Yup, very Willow-y. For some reason twelve seemed exactly the right number... just like her! :wink

MICHELLE: Thanks! I'm pretty sure there's not going to be so much self-control later on, though! :wink Sorry, I like winking, it's the one emoticon I know off by heart! :wink Apart from the :willow and :tara of course. Oops. I'll go now.

LONEWOLF: Thank you, and I'm sure there's going to be a lot more Willow and Tara goodness. Though I can't really do the smut thing... anyone wanna be my beta? Or rather, do I get the pleasure of someone's beta?

STEF: Thank you, normally I couldn't quite understand Willows 'resistance' but it seemed to fit! I like that the 12-page checklist went down well!

CELIA: Thanks very much! I always seemed to be able to put down Willow better than Tara for some reason, even though I'm a lot more like Tara. Hmm.

Thank you again Kittens, and I promise update will come tomorrow. I'll go now and get to work, yeah?!

Well, here's the promised update! Is it obvious I'm trying hard on the humour thing? Should I just stop right now? I can take it (I think!!)

CHAPTER 2 - An Awkward Journey

Willow shifted uncomfortably in her seat, cursing the airport agency under her breath. They had totally screwed up when Willow had called to book the flight tickets – and now the couple were sitting at different ends of the plane. Willow leaned forwards, and was just able to see past the large woman sitting next to her and about seven other passengers to Tara, who was sitting at the window seat on the left side of the plane, whereas Willow was at the right. The blonde 22-year-old looked just as nervous as Willow. She was sitting next to a handsome man of only about twenty years old, and to Willow’s jealousy she saw he was trying to chat Tara up. Seeing Willow glancing at her, Tara ignored her neighbour and gave her girlfriend a bright, forced happy smile. Their holiday was turning out just great.

“So, are you from Sunnydale?” The man, who had introduced himself as Rick Turner, asked cheerfully. Tara nodded, not wanting to make conversation, and resisted the urge to turn her back on him. “What a coincidence! I am too!” Rick exclaimed too enthusiastically. Tara swallowed hard. Don’t let him ask to meet up, don’t let him ask to meet up. She pleaded silently. “You’re heading to cold Switzerland, right?” Rick continued. She knew what was coming as she nodded again. “Me too! Wow, we have to meet up, it’s like we’re destined to be together.”

Oh, crap. “Um, Rick, I’m – I’m – I’m in a relationship.” Tara wasn’t about to blurt out she was gay to a total stranger. His face fell.

“Well, I hope he knows how lucky he is.”

For God’s sake, we only just met!

Willow was looking decidedly furious at Rick.

“Can we at least be friends?”

Jeez, this guy never stops. Tara bit her lip to stop from sighing. She was sure that Rick could have been a nice enough guy if he hadn’t thrown himself at her so quickly. She didn’t like anyone who spoke cheesy chat up lines. Willow was a different matter. The redhead, whenever she spoke, meant it sincerely, and Tara knew that.

“Do you even know my name?” Tara found herself asking, and clapped a hand to her mouth. She hadn’t honestly meant to say that.

“It’s Tricia, right?”

Tara scowled, looked up at the television screen at the head of the plane and saw with relief that the BELTS ON sign was no longer lit. “No, it’s Tara.” She retorted, stood up and purposely walked down the aisle and up the other side to see Willow.

“Having a nice time?” Willow asked with a slightly-bitter smile. The woman sitting next to her was not taking up one seat but about one and a half, leaving the poor redhead squashed up against the wall.

“Peachy.” Tara said. “I’ve got a total slime-ball sitting next to me.”

Relief was evident on Willow’s face. “Really? That’s great!”

Tara folded her arms. “What?”

“No, I mean, I don’t want any competition.” Willow tried to look innocent.

“Will, sweetie, I’m gay, not bisexual. You’re the only gal for me.” She held out her hand. “Care to come for a walk to the toilet?” She flashed another cheeky smile. Gladly, Willow grasped hold of Tara’s hand and squeezed out through the one inch gap, taking care not to wake up the old woman.

“I’d like much more than a walk, thank you.” Willow beamed as Tara glanced around to make sure no one was watching and then pulled them into the tiny toilet cubicle. The lock closed with a click.

CHILLED MONKEY - Thank you. I've only posted two fics before on this board and both of them were kind of depressing so I thought, what the heck, I'll do a cheerful one. That way I don't end up seeming like someone who doesn't know the word 'cheerful' :grin

Thanks for the feedback, Kittens!! I'm going to tiptoe off now and write the third chapter! Does that sound good? Okay, I'll go, I promise. Update this evening (cos I'm in England, I'm not sure what time that is where most of you are. I think one in the afternoon in America? I'm no good with that.)No matter. I'll stop babbling now. Halfway Around The World

Postby 4evaWill » Mon Nov 11, 2002 12:34 pm

CHAPTER 3 – Arrivals

“Willow!” A cheerful voice exclaimed, and there was the sound of someone bounding towards them. Willow and Tara exchanged irritated looks – the last thing they needed right now was an incredibly hyper and not wanted Amy Madison. “What the heck are you doing here? Fancy seeing you in the Alps of all places! Oh, what a coincidence!” The brunette wrapped her arms around Willow’s neck and drew her into a bear-like hug. “Did I ever thank you for making me human again? Because, it like, totally rocks! Have you met my new boyfriend, Ian? We’re all set out for a romantic week together.” She raised her eyebrows at Tara. “Oh, I forget about the whole women thing you two have. I s’pose you’re having a romantic week as well?”

“Not with you around.” Willow muttered under her breath. Receiving a sharp nudge from her girlfriend, she looked straight into Amy’s still rat-like blue eyes. “Look, Amy, you seem to have forgotten what I said to you when we last saw each other.”

Amy considered whilst waving shyly at a handsome man standing at the reception desk, booking them in. “Um…”

“I’m not even going to bother.” Willow held her arm out to Tara who obediently slipped her hand through. “Come on, baby, let’s go book into our lodge.” They walked off, leaving an open-mouthed Amy.

“How rude.” The witch scowled, then pasted a pretty smile onto her face and danced over to her boyfriend.

“Willow and Tara Rosenberg?”

Tara smiled at the fact that the receptionist had mistaken them for married. “Actually, it’s Willow Rosenberg and Tara Maclay.” She reluctantly admitted. The woman at the desk tapped into her computer and looked apologetic.

“I’m sorry, I always seem to make mistakes like that.”

“Oh, that’s okay.” Willow hastened to make amends. The woman reached behind her to a board filled with keys hanging on hooks and handed a set to Tara.

“You’ll be on Pine Lane, at lodge 17. There’s maps situated at every junction and sled stop so you will be able to find your way.” The woman nodded towards the large pile of luggage by the door. “If you just take what you’ll need for this evening, we’ll send one of our bus boys up later on.”

“Thank you ever so much.” Tara gladly said, and reached for her cosmetics bag whilst Willow dived for her own suitcase containing her pyjamas. “See, sweetie? Things are going great already.” They stepped out into the cold evening, and she wrapped her knee-length cardigan tighter around her. “D-d-despite the freezing atmosphere.” Tara added with already chattering teeth.

“And the Amy arrival.” Willow sighed. “Ah well, I think she got the hint.” She peered at the large map that stood at the end of the entrance to the main lodge. “Here’s Pine Lane… two blocks from here. And number 17, ooh, it’s right by the sled stop. That’s good.”

“Yes, God forbid we walk.” Tara joked, and put Willow’s suitcase on its wheels. “The receptionist said that the sled only comes every half hour, and it’s just past half seven so we’ll walk. It’s not that far.”

Willow pretended to pout. “I don’t wanna walk.” She whined. “I’m tired. I wanna take the sled.”

“Oh, stop being a baby.” Tara cuffed Willow lightly on the ear and they both laughed, breaking the unusually still air. Willow looked up at the black sky – being winter, of course it got dark much earlier – and saw with amazement that the hundreds of stars were brighter than she had ever seen them. “Aren’t they beautiful?” Tara whispered, reading Willow’s thoughts. They continued along the path, their boots crunching the crisp snow, involved in their own happy thoughts of their four-week holiday.

“This is just how I imagined it.” Willow said as they drew near to their lodge. They had passed several other lodges, all wooden and seemingly occupying someone as the lounges were lit up from the flickering fireplace. “I mean, this is exactly what it’s like in the movies. Beautiful dark night, the romantic lodges…” She glared at her rattling suitcase. “The only thing that spoils it is these damn wheels. Shut up!"

Tara laughed again, feeling giddy with happiness. “Will, honey, nothing could spoil this.”

“Yes.” Willow agreed. “I mean, I’m with you. And that’s enough.” She wrapped her free arm around Tara’s waist, and Tara did the same, her cosmetics bag dangling by her side. “I love you, Tare-bear. Did I ever tell you that?”

Tara paused, turned to Willow and saw that those wonderfully sparkling green eyes reflected the stars. “Everyday.” She replied quietly. “And I love you too.”

Tara: No, I-I understand. You have to be with the person you l-love.

Willow: I am.
