AntigoneUnbound – Wow. Considering how late it must have been in your part of the country by the time this post went up… you must have been at work really late!! Yes, Tara is quite the enigma in the piece, and she’s going to stay that way for quite some time, it seems. Glad you liked it.

VN12 – Yes, the hug/almost kiss was a very intense write for me. I almost felt like I was right there with them…

Cinditipude – Yeah, like I’ve said before I’m really trying to communicate “real life” in this fic. So naturally in real life Willow wouldn’t be an overnight success. To own one’s own business takes a lot of work and not a lot of reward… at least at first. And I should know… oy.

Grimlock72 – Yes, Willow does tend to over think things A LOT. That is prolly one of her more prevalent flaws.

BFR from Paris – Well, the hug actually took place three months earlier than the start of the fic itself. So.. things are still pretty much where they were. I warn everybody reading that this fic is going to jump around timelines a whole heck of a lot. Glad you like the choice of “Amelie” unfortunately I myself haven’t seen it yet… but I plan on it and hopefully soon. Love the soundtrack!

Snuggle79 – Tara’s sis is caught up in her own life, which it seems she has actually been able to have.. unlike Tara… hopefully there we’ll be some evening out of responsibility as time wears on.

Beth – Yeah... they sure do seem real, don’t they? I think that is because the subject/conflict of this story is so very universal, it hits home with a lot of people. And yes, if only Tara would look to see what is right there in front of her. But then again, maybe she knows… and the thought of being so completely cared for… scares her. But it’s all speculation at this point.

Jdcoiffi – I hear yah! I have to watch the movie too!

Cheers to all

DW

Willow's reaction to Tara's costume, and her thoughts while Tara was trying to ease her breathing, was amusing. Also liked her mental debate about whether to wait for Tara or not. Poor Will, she's such a smitten kitten.

DW,

I like how you are giving a lot of mystery to Tara, but it seems like she is leaning toward gay. She is certainly interested in Willow to a certain extent. :shy

Tara really does need to balance her priorities. Tara does need to take care of her mother, but she should make time for herself to figure out how she feels about Willow.

Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.

Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Willow: Hi, um Tara. I was wondering maybe you want to go out some time for coffee? food? Kisses and gay love?

wonderful, my love. so sad to see willow want to be with her so badly and for tara to be confused. but i know you'll give us W/T.

if you are doing flashbacks then that means that we will be able to read willow's not so forward declaration yet declaration nonetheless? right?! that would be cute to read and i'm interested in tara's thoughts afterwards.

just curious: why did you decide to have tara have a sister instead of brother?

S’more Replies!

Grimaldi- Well, personally I think any Willow is cute… but that’s just me ;)

mollyig- Hehe, you rhymed! :p I am so of the easily amused party.

The Rose24 – Tara is so caught up in caring for her mother. It seems as if she doesn’t really know anything outside of that. Willow is trying to give her the opportunity to “step out” (no pun intended) and I’m not sure that Tara will know what to do with herself once she does. Or once her mother passes away. But Willow will be there to lend her support and her love.

Rane018 – I had thought about showing the moment where Willow expresses her feelings (however ineptly) to Tara… still debating it… But I’ll decide eventually… and the reason I gave her a sister rather than a brother is b/c Donnie comes with too much a stigma attached to him, I wanted to be able to start fresh in that respect. Also, though it will be expounded upon later, Tara’s family is not “backwoods” or “low income”, and Donnie is associated with that image as well. So… Bad Donnie.. no part in fic for you! :p

Cheers

Update...

Postby DarkWiccan » Tue Nov 05, 2002 2:26 pm

Previously:

Willow likes Tara. But doesn't know if Tara is gay or not. Tara doesn't even know herself. Xander likes Willow, but it's NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!

Moving on...

Warning... kinda angsty.

_______________________________________________

Willow lay reclining on the couch in her living room watching re-runs of “M*A*S*H” on TV. The apartment was relatively dark, with only the ambient light from the television and the small light over the kitchen stove providing any illumination. The redhead’s ears perked up as she heard the front door opening, and the sound of someone struggling through it with full bags, grocery bags. A familiar and comforting scent wafted toward Willow’s nostrils, and she knew without even having to look up that it was unmistakably…

“Hey, Baby”, she called from the couch, “You need any help?”

“No, I’m okay, thanks, Hon”, Tara answered, unloading her burden on the kitchen counter. “The store was a madhouse”, she commented as she began to load the groceries into the fridge and pantry. “What time did you get home?”

“About half an hour ago”, Willow replied, straining her neck to peer over the back of the couch and at her lover, bustling about. “You sure you don’t need any help?”

“Positive”, came the reply, “anybody call?”

“Xander”, said Willow, “he left a message. Wanted to know if I wanted to hang out tonight.”

“Do you?”

“Nah, I just wanted to spend the evening at home tonight.”

Tara finally made her appearance into the living room, crossing to where Willow sat and straddling her legs.

“Good”, she said simply.

“Good?” Willow inquired, more than enjoying the feeling of her girlfriend’s weight across her thighs.

“Mm-hmm”, Tara sighed, leaning in and capturing the redhead’s lips briefly. “I mean, I just hate eating beef stroganoff all by myself…”

Willow’s eyes instantly lit up. “You got stuff…”

“Uh-huh…” Tara smiled.

“To make beef stroganoff?” Willow was positively giddy. “You’re making my favorite?”

“Uh-huh.”

“What’s the occasion?” Willow grinned, shifting her legs happily beneath her lover.

“Well, I just wanted to make this evening special”, Tara explained, “particularly since today’s weather is cloudy with a high of 73 and scattered showers expected throughout the day.”

“Huh?”

Willow inhaled sharply as she awoke from her dream. Sitting up slightly, she turned her head to focus blearily on the clock radio going off beside her bed. She groaned, sniffled a little and rubbed her face tiredly before reaching over and shutting the abominable contraption off, not quite ready to start her day.

***

Tara was up to her elbows in soapsuds. She had felt the need to do something rather than feeling useless, as she generally did when it came to caring for her mother. Well, not so much useless as helpless. Her mother was going to die, and there was nothing she could do about that and she hated that feeling. So she had to do something. Something to busy her hands. That something had ended up being baking a cake… from scratch. The kitchen was now, in her opinion, an absolute disaster area, and so the something she had subsequently settled herself into doing was cleaning it up. Tara diligently scrubbed and washed each dirty pan, plate, and utensil to a sparkling clean, refusing to use the dishwasher because that meant cutting corners, and she desperately needed to do something time consuming.

Lisa, completely caught up in the music playing through her Walkman, be-bopped into the kitchen from the front hall, settling down at the island in the center of the room and unloaded a stack of mail onto its surface.

“Mail’s here”, she said, sidling up onto one the bar stools.

“Could you sort through it, Lees?” Tara asked, “I’m kind of busy here.”

“Sure”, Lisa sighed, dismissively glancing at each envelope and announcing the contents. “Bill…bill…bill…Get Well letter for mom… Get Well letter for mom…bill… Get Well letter for mom…Ooh, Publisher’s Clearing House. Hey, Tare, we may have won 10 million dollars.”

“Wouldn’t that be great”, Tara stated, rolling her eyes, “Anything else?”

“Yeah, there’s one for you”, Lisa announced.

“One for me?” asked the blonde, perplexed. “Who from?”

“Uh… return address says ‘Rosenberg’”, read Lisa, “Isn’t that Willow’s last name?”

“Yeah”, said Tara, “Why would Willow be sending me a letter? We just talked on the phone a couple of days ago and she only lives across town.”

“Maybe it’s an invitation to her Hallowe’en party”, offered her younger sister.

“That’s probably it”, Tara agreed, “could you open it and read it to me? My hands are all sudsy.”

“Sure.” Said Lisa, taking off her headphones and letting them rest on her neck while she tore open the long, slender envelope.

“Dear Tara,

“So it’s 8:35 on Friday night and I’m sitting in my living room listening to a mix CD that a friend made up for me, and my thoughts keep drifting to you. I just realized that you probably get a lot of ‘Get Well’ letters for your mom, but never any for you. Not that you are sick or anything, just that you don’t get the attention that is due you.

“You’re going through a really tough time, and you haven’t had anyone to help take up the burden with you. When my godchildren are feeling low about themselves, or are just stressed out, I like to take them into my arms and hug them and tell them to give me their worries, give me their pains, because they are far too young and precious to have to carry such a load.

“If only there was something I could do you for you. You have known too heavy a burden for too long in your life. If I could somehow offer you my support as a friend

to help lift some of the weight from your shoulders. I’m sure any sort of respite would be the only you have had in a long time.

“When I was young, my dad and I used to play this game we called, ‘I Wish For You’. We normally played it on road trips to help pass the time. The way you play is simple. Using the phrase, ‘I wish for you…” you something that you want for the other person. Pretty self-explanatory. When I was very young the wishes were almost always material in nature. ‘I wish for you… a new bike’, etc. But as I grew older they became more emotional or spiritually centered. With that in mind:

“Tara—

“I wish for you friendship.

I wish for you peace.

I wish for you hope.

I wish for you joy.

But most importantly—

I wish for you freedom.

I wish for you...

Love,

Willow

Tara stood completely still by the sink, her hands stay resting underneath the soapy water, and she could feel the tips of her fingers beginning to prune. A strange sensation filled her chest, and not a pleasant one. Fear, panic, a sudden rush of embarrassment all pounded against the inside of her ribcage.

“Wow”, said Lisa after a moment’s pause. “Um, well… that was really… sweet.”

“Yeah…” She couldn’t believe that she had made her little sister read the letter aloud.

“Uh… is there something… going on with you two?” the younger woman asked hesitantly.

“No!” Tara answered, far too loudly to be convincing. “I mean, no…” she said again, this time keeping her voice calm. “What makes you say that?”

“Nothing”, Lisa tried to assure her, “It’s just… this letter… it’s…kinda like a love letter almost. Doesn’t she know that you’re straight?”

“Of course she does”, Tara defended, finally thinking to pull her hands from the sink, drying them hastily with a towel and taking the letter from her sister’s hands. “It’s just a friendly note. See, she even says, ‘as a friend’.”

“Why are you freaking out about this so much?”

“I’m not freaking.”

“Yes, you are”, said Lisa. “I know you too well, and this is you freaking. Tara, if you guys have something…”

“We don’t…nothing. I’m telling you there’s nothing.” She folded the letter up and stuffed it in her back pocket.

“Your reaction would tend to make me think otherwise”, Lisa countered.

“Just drop it, okay?” Tara was starting to lose her temper now, and that truly gave Lisa pause. Tara was a very temperate soul, but most likely as a result of all the current stress she was under, whenever she lost her temper, she would really lose it.

Lisa tempered her voice, trying to make it more soothing and not so accusatory. “Tare, if you have feelings for her, that’s oka—“

The blonde cut her off before she could get any further, “Well, I don’t, and I just wish you would let it go. It’s just a letter.”

“Okay, it’s dropped. It’s gone”, Lisa acquiesced, “This is me over it.”

Tara let out a long, defeated sigh. “Good, now, would you mind helping me put this stuff away?”

“Uh, okay, sure”, she agreed, step up over to the dish rack and beginning to unload it.

“I just have to run to the bathroom”, said Tara, excusing herself from the room.

Once inside the bathroom she removed the letter from her pocket and crumpled it in her hand, prepared to flush it down the toilet. But after several minutes of standing over the open commode, rumpled note in hand, she felt herself returning the tattered paper to the safety of her denim pocket, and leaving the small room.

Oh what a cruel way to wake up, poor Willow.

Tara's coping mechanism of constantly staying busy is so touching, afraid to stop for fear of being overwhelmed by all that's going on. Willow's letter was so sweet, pity Tara was too busy to read it for herself, it may have been better received if read in private without Lisa being aware of its contents.

Wow, that was a truly beautiful letter. I can’t believe her sister ended up reading something so private. What a twist; can see how something like that can happen. Poor Tara so embarrassed & confused. Not sure of what she is feeling & then having her kid sister call her on it. She is freaking but yea, kept the letter. Maybe there is hope.

Poor Willow though, it must have taken such courage for her to send that letter. She now has to wait not knowing what really happened & if Tara freaked or not. Hope she doesn’t end up getting that heart on her sleeve broken.

Oh, DW...What a clever way to give us a bit o' teasing with W&T, and what a humorous way to show it as fantasy: "especially since today will be..."

I was so impressed at your description of Tara's reaction to the letter: that twisting, embarrassed feeling in the gut; that desire to have absolutely ANYTHING else be the focus of attention. You wrote that scene so well. It actually took me back to my own coming out process and how excruciating such moments were.

Hats off, DW--this is an incredibly well-written update.

Postby JewWitch18 » Tue Nov 05, 2002 9:28 pm

oh, DW, your updates are so good, and yet so short! having never felt much in the way of ambivilence in my own early days of coming out, and also being a heart-on-the-sleeve kind of girl, I am totally feeling willow here. poor sweet bundle of love! she sees this girl she loves in pain, with this huge burden on her back, and all she wants to do is make it better...and so she goes out on a limb and tries to offer herself, but the timing is so tenuous and I can just see her sitting around trying not to think, did she get the letter yet? should I not have sent it? what's she thniking? not that I have ever had such thoughts running through my own head...about letters...cause I'd never be so chicken I'd write a letter to a girl I see every day just because I couldn't say the words out loud...ehrm, yeah. :blush

super good update! I know you said in the beginning that this wasn't going to be a regularly-updated story, just an exersize, but have you maybe built up some steam, or juice, or steamy juices since then? cause I vote for a lot more of this story.

Re: Update...

Postby VampNo12 » Wed Nov 06, 2002 2:34 am

I am so glad to see another update DW! Even though, Willow was dreaming, what spoke to me was the simplicity of the moment. Or in other words, for Willow "happiness/perfection" is simply being together with her love eating beef stroganoff (ie conveys the emotional depth of feeling/love she holds for Tara, it's not simply passion she is feeling for her). Here's hoping her dream will become a reality soon :) .

As for Tara I really feel for her. She has such a heavy burden on her shoulders, and her need to stay busy really resonated with me (ie in regards to feeling "helpless").

Willow's "Get Well" letter to Tara was beautiful. In regards to Tara's "unpleasant reaction" towards the letter, I think it would of been better received if she read the letter to herself in private (as opposed to Tara feeling "exposed" with Lisa reading it out-loud to her).

And I thought what was significant was even though Tara "freaked", when push came to shove she couldn't dispose of the letter. With this in mind, I get the sense of Tara's mind and heart waging a war, with her mind "wanting to get rid of the evidence", but on a deeper level Willow's words "touched" her heart. Now Tara has to get to the stage where her heart and mind are on "the same page", and although, I have a feeling there will be some more angst before this happens, I am sure W&T will eventually find one another. Can't wait for the next part!

well written! :)

The emotions you depicted are so raw. I felt my heart being yanked from my chest and almost shred to pieces at Tara's overwhelming confusion as to whether flush the letter or not. The fact that she reacted so intensely belies her true feelings.

And intense feelings isn't something Tara needs right now that she is busy worrying about her mother.

Emotions are so well evoked.

Much appreciation,

Wow!! A whole heckuvalotof replies!! I’m away from the board for two days doing a show and BLAM! You like me! You really like me! :cry :grin

Okay… down to brass tacks:

Mollyig: Yes, such a horrid dream. Haven’t we all been there… sigh…

Jdcoiffi: No, she didn’t throw it away. But Willow doesn’t know that. In fact, Willow doesn’t know anything… but she’s holding on… and glad you liked the note. I was very should I/should I not include it… up to the second I posted it… even after I posted it, I was still unsure.

Beth: Once again you peg it on the nosey. Deduce, you say?

Snuggle79: Yes, the key word to this fiction is confusion. In fact, I shall make it the word of the day. Can you say “confusion”? Yeah, I knew you could ;)

Grimaldi: Your loquacious responses are always appreciated. ;)

AU: Yes, I think at one time or another we have all experienced that horrible, gut-wrenching, twisting, can’t breathe, want to die feeling… glad you think I captured it well. Still absolutely ADORING “On Second Thought”, btw…

JewWitch: Yes, well.. my updates are on the snippet-y sized side of things. But as I said at the very beginning, this is just a “when the inspiration strikes” kind of fic. Sometimes my inspiration is long-winded, and sometimes… not so much. As for steamy juices… most likely there won’t be any in this story… I’ve rated it PG-13 and I’m sticking to it. <> :miff :grin

The Rose24: Awe, gosh.. thanks :blush

Deixs: Thanks!

VN12: Yes, Willow very much likes the simple things. We will be learning a little more about her and her past relationship experiences and what drives her in connecting with other folks. And I have to agree that the letter would have been much better rec’d if Tara had read it in private. Absolutely.

Sleek: Sorry about the heart-ripping… I hate ripping hearts... but… (takes out official membership card to the Dept of Redundancy Dept) I think that the effectiveness of this fic comes not necessarily from the writing, but from the common experience that almost all of us have gone through, no matter from what side of the fence.

Littlecrazy80: I hope she does too :)

Xita: So wonderful to see you gracing my thread with your presence. Yes, this is an unusual approach to the W/T relationship. But I am having fun playing around with the characters and making a general nuisance of myself :grin And yes, we will do a few more flashbacks that establish the beginnings of W/T friendship

Barnabasvamp: Making this entire premise believable is part of the challenge of writing this piece… and I am loving (and hating) every second of it. Loving b/c I adore the process of character creation and manipulation. Hating b/c I tend to live emotionally through the storyline I am writing and there have been some tough moments to draw out and give breath to. Glad you’re enjoying!

Twisted Minstrel: I think that everyone knows this story… and everyone hopes for a happy ending. That’s the joy of fiction… ultimately… it’s all predetermined. Unlike real life… which doesn’t have an outline or a story board… thought I really wish it did. Oy.

Cheers!
