Part 18 – A Matter of ProtocolRiley stumbled forwards as he was yanked by a wire cord that had been wrapped tightly around his wrists. Faith was walking ahead of him, grasping the makeshift restraints tightly in one hand. He had only just recovered from the blow Buffy had landed on his ribcage and was glad he was able to breath properly again. Though, that was the only positive thing he could think about in this situation. He was being held captive by two Slayers and was being led like cattle to an unknown location. He just hoped security would realise something was wrong and find him. He doubted a rescue team would be able to defeat the two girls but it might give him the distraction he needed to break free.
“How ya doin’ back there, Riley?” Faith grinned over her shoulder at him and he merely scowled back in response. He wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of showing how hopeless he felt.
As they headed down multiple corridors, Riley noticed they were headed towards the most heavily restricted sector of the underground base. He realised where they must be heading.
They must be trying to free that witch, he mused. They came to a stop in front of a pair of large, sturdy metal doors. They were sealed tightly and not even a Slayer would be able to pry them open. Beside the doors was a small device that Riley knew was a retinal scanner. Only a handful of people could get past this point. Unfortunately, he was one of them.
“Come on, military man, flash your baby blues at the damn machine.” Faith ordered, motioning towards the scanner with her free hand.
Riley shook his head. “There’s no way I’m going to help you.”
Faith’s dark eyes flashed dangerously and she stepped towards him. Her hand whipped up and her fingers closed around his throat, choking the air from him. “There’s two ways you can do this. Either you do it voluntarily, or I’m just gonna have to squeeze until one of them eyeballs pops outta your head like a champagne cork.” She tightened her grip to emphasise the point and he quickly nodded.
Once the Slayer had released her hold, Riley moved forwards and aligned his eyes with the scanner. After several beeps, a muted hissing could be heard and the doors slid open. Riley felt himself being pulled through them with such a force that he found himself on the floor. The doors closed behind the trio and he looked up at his captors.
Faith looked over at Buffy and she nodded towards the dark Slayer. Riley didn’t understand the silent conversation they were having but he guessed whatever they had agreed upon wouldn’t be in his favour. Faith looked down at him and smiled sweetly. “Night, night soldier boy.” With that, she brought her fist down hard against his cheek. He felt the sharp pain flare out across his skull and then the darkness seeped in across his vision.
“You bi…” He slumped to the floor without finishing the final words of his conscious state.

Avoiding the death glare she was receiving from Mr. Maclay, Willow skimmed through the magic book she had previously put down by her side. She had decided it would be best if she could find a useful spell to help in the rescue of Tara’s mother. Though her knowledge had greatly increased recently, it never did any harm to learn more spells. She stole a glance at Tara, who was now comforting her younger brother on the bed. He was snuggled under her arm whilst she stroked his short blonde hair. Willow smiled at the sibling affection and she wondered what it would be like if she hadn’t been an only child. She then realised all of her friends didn’t have brothers or sisters and wondered if that was a side effect of being destined to be part of the Scooby Gang. That couldn’t be right, Tara was the newest member and she had siblings. Maybe it was a part of being born on the Hellmouth, or perhaps it was merely coincidence.
She chastised herself for allowing her attention to wander and continued scanning the book in her lap. There wasn’t many helpful spells in it. Mainly low level magics that consisted of making plants grow faster or simple levitation.
Maybe those commando guys are allergic to flowers. She pondered.
Yeah right, I’ll just conjure up an army of flowers and grass and give them a big dose of hay fever. She rolled her eyes at her own thoughts.
“What’s up?” Tara asked quietly.
Willow looked up, merely shrugging. “This book isn’t a lot of help.”
“You think you can get that evil hag back by using the devil’s ways.” Mr. Maclay spat.
Willow turned to him and narrowed her eyes. Instead of retorting, she looked back at Tara. “You know, I don’t think we’re going to need anything new, not if the whole Scooby Gang’s there. We can defeat anything together.”
Her statement made the blonde girl smile and Willow watched as she hugged her brother tighter.
“You’ll just get you and your friends killed.” Tara’s father taunted.
Willow ignored him and continued to give Tara a reassuring look. The middle-aged man’s remarks might not have been fazing her but she could tell they were affecting her girlfriend. Charlie also seemed to be feeling uncomfortable under his father’s intense glare.
“So, all we have to do is wait for the gang to show up and then we go kick Initiative butt, okay?” Willow smiled, forcing herself to sound cheery.
A small smile flickered across Tara’s face and she nodded but Mr. Maclay’s voice cut into the moment. “They tortured your bitch of a mother, you know that right? And they’ll do the same to you.” He laughed. “I hope they—“
“Shut. Up!” Came the chorus of shouts from the three other inhabitants of the room.
The spindly man looked at them all in shock. His children had never spoken back to him. Now they were glaring at him and it was all that redhead’s fault. She had corrupted Tara at first and now Charlie. She would pay first by his own hand. Just as soon as he got out of his restraints.
The phone rang out in a shrill tone, causing everyone in the room to jump. They all seemed to merely stare at it for a moment, no one moving to answer it. Eventually, Willow rose to her feet and crossed the room. She picked up the receiver and greeted whoever was on the other end of the phone.
Giles’ voice came across with his usual clear and crisp tone. There was also a hint of urgency in it. “Willow, I haven’t been able to get a hold of Buffy. Xander says he doesn’t know where she is either.”
Willow screwed up her face in confusion. They had all left the compound together and they had left Buffy with Faith. Her mind whirled at the possible outcomes of that situation. Although she didn’t trust Faith, the dark Slayer had helped them and she didn’t think she could defeat Buffy in a fair fight. Then again, Faith had never been known for fighting fair. Faith had known a lot about the Initiative but the pair wouldn’t have been gung-ho enough to go in alone. Would they?
Who am I kidding, they’re a pair of pride fuelled Slayers!“Oh crap.” Willow muttered.
“What?” Came Giles’ alarmed reply. “What’s wrong?”
“She must have gone into that commando base again.” Willow informed him. “We’ve gotta help her.”
There was a pause on the other end of the line and Willow was sure the Englishman was cleaning his glasses. “No, we should wait for Buffy to contact us. It is entirely possible she didn’t go and going after her would be foolish.”
Willow shook her head, forgetting that Giles wouldn’t be able to see the gesture. “No way, Giles. We have to help her. I’m not waiting around while Buffy’s in danger. We can’t do this ‘by the book’. I know Buffy, and I know where she’ll be.” With that, she slammed down the phone and rushed around the room, collecting her jacket and a few spell ingredients.
“What’s going on?” Tara asked, rising to her feet.
Willow stopped and looked at her girlfriend. “They must have gone back into the Initiative, Tara. We have to go after them.” She quickly put on her jacket and headed for the door. “Faith must have known where they’re keeping your mother.”
“Uh, Will.” Tara’s words once again halted the redhead.
She looked around to see the blonde girl motioning towards the bound man on the floor. “Oh.” Willow’s mind raced for a solution to the situation. “I’ll cast a sleeping spell on him.” She uttered a few words in Latin and the middle-aged man was soon slumped against the wall in a dreamless state. Willow’s eyes then locked with Charlie’s.
“I’ll be fine here. As long as he’s asleep.” The young man turned to stare at his father. “Someone should stay with him.”
Willow marvelled at how Charlie could still care about his father after all the harm the man had done. “He won’t wake up for at least six hours. We’ll be back by then.” She hoped.
Tara placed a quick kiss on her brother’s forehead and smiled reassuringly at him. “I’ll be back soon.”
“Be careful, sis.” He looked up at her with a mixture of fear and adoration.
Tara nodded and followed Willow out of the room. They walked down the corridor in silence, each feeling anxious for what was to come. Breaking into the Initiative was hard enough when they had been with the two Slayers. Now that they were on their own, it was going to be near impossible. Willow feared for Tara’s safety and she would have preferred her girl to be tucked safely away. But she knew that the blonde girl would have refused. After all, they were going to save her mother, she had a right to be there.
Tara slipped a hand into Willow’s and the redhead could feel the moisture that had collected there. She slowed to a stop and Tara looked at her expectantly. “You scared, baby?”
Tara nodded. “A-Aren’t you?”
Willow nodded also and moved to embrace the blonde. “But I don’t feel it so much when I’m with you.”
Tara smiled and hugged the redhead tighter. “Me too.” She audibly took in a shaky breath. “Do you think we’ll be able to do this?”
Willow pulled away slightly and looked up into nervous blue eyes. “We can do anything together.” With that, she leaned forwards and pressed her lips against the full ones of her girlfriend’s. The kiss was short but conveyed all the tenderness and safety they felt with one another.
“Together.” Tara sighed.
