Update

Postby Shadow » Sun Jun 08, 2003 9:14 am

She glanced at the papers in front of her for what seemed like a millionth time and dropped her head on the table in defeat. She just couldn’t understand it. Her first thought was to call her colleagues, but she couldn’t, not if what she was seeing was real. A lab tech knocked on the glass door and she motioned to her to come in.

-        Dr. Summers, I did tests again. I even double checked everything. The first test results were accurate.

Brown haired girl took a deep breath before answering.

-        Lana, can you read this? I know you’re lab tech, but I also know you are struggling to get scholarship so you can finish college. Can you understand what you are seeing?

-        Well, I know that this two DNAs are so much alike they must come from sisters because only sisters have so many same markers.

-        That is right, but it’s not what I was aiming for. Look at this.

Dawn pulled yellow paper from underneath the pile and showed it to the other girl who took it.

-        What am I looking at?

-        Something that makes me think I’m completely crazy. Usually baby’s DNA has two codons. One from mother, and one from the father. Now, first of all, this two DNA’s have same parents. Both parents.

-        Why does that surprise you?

-        Because this DNA belongs to my niece Yuki, her mother Willow moved to Japan years ago and came back this month. Other DNA belongs to Jewel, Tara’s daughter.

Both women fell silent for a moment. From the first moment Dawn met Lana they clicked. Soon they became friends and Lana, far away from her home and her family found comfort in Dawn’s family. She played hockey with Jewel every Saturday since Buffy started working Saturdays and couldn’t make it anymore.

-        Neither one of them adopted, right?

-        Right.

-        So, if they have codons from same parents, and Willow gave birth to Yuki, while Tara gave birth to Jewel, then it means that Jewel’s second parent is Willow? This is too advanced for me Dawn. Is this even possible?

-        No.

-        Then how do you explain it?

Dawn moved to the window. The dark was starting to fall on Sunnydale and she wanted to head home early. Her head was starting to ache and she still needed to meet Jed for a coffee. Sometimes she didn’t understand why was she seeing him. She really loved him. That was never a question. The thought of hurting him hurt her. She smiled when he smiled, cried when he cried, but still… something just wasn’t there. Maybe she looked at the relationships from the wrong point of view. After all relationships she was witnessing were gay. Buffy and Faith were crazy about each other. They always played tough in front of others but she caught them sometimes, when they thought no one was watching them and they would just look at each other with pure adoration, or hug for so long the almost became one. Sure they fought. They were both pig headed, but even when they fought it was never like when she fought with Jed. It was just more… natural. How strange, gay love seems more natural then straight love. But she still couldn’t describe it.

-        Do you ever wonder if there were stories of two princesses or if knight was female, there would be more gay people?

-        Huh? Where did that came from?

-        I honestly don’t know. It just occurred to me, right now, that even if we are thought to be opened to homosexuals since we are children, we still hear stories about knights and princesses and that cuts itself deep in our mind so we can’t shake it. And even if we feel attracted to same gender we feel dirty and disgusted with ourselves. And all that because of some fairy tale crap. You know, nothing will change in the world until Cinderella meets princess charming. Nothing. How can you tell people that being gay isn’t something to be disgust with if you counter the knowledge they held close ever since they were little babies. It’ s all just same old crap.

-        You know Dawn, someone might think you were gay.

With that Lana walked out and left Dawn alone by the window. For a moment she just looked at the Sunydale before picking up phone and dialling well known number.

-        Hey Jed, look I can’t make it tonight. I have something important to do. And I’ ll probably be sleeping over at the old house, so… see you tomorrow and love you.

She hang up thankful for the answering machine, picked up the papers from the table and ran down the hall.

When she reached the stairs she carefully jumped from one to another feeling like a little kid, not some doctor. She reached the lab, two floors down and searched for the blacked haired girl. She found her buried in books. For a moment she just looked at the girl. Her shoulder length black hair was let loose and was constantly falling over her eyes, which Dawn knew were dark blue. Lana wasn’t gonna let her hair win so she tucked strands of wild hair behind her ear once again. Dawn didn’t know a lot about Lana. Except that she had some kind of an accident that made her forget who she was or were she came from. One of the doctors noticed she had sound knowledge in medicine so they gave her a job as a lab tech until she finishes college.

-        Dawn?

Soft voice brought her out of her fantasy.

-        Hey Lana, I was wondering if you would like to meet the other kid, Yuki. She’s something different.

-        So is Jewel.

-        Lets go.

Tara carefully entered the room. She was trying hard not to make too much noise. If Jewel decided to take afternoon brake and fall asleep willingly Tara didn’t want to play with luck and wake her up. For a moment she just watched her daughter sleep. If she closed her eyes she usually saw big house with even bigger back yard with swings and slide for Yuki and Jewel. Maybe even a pool for her and Willow. She was definitely warming up to the idea of having a family. She didn’t use to. Growing up wasn’t easy for her so she wanted to make it as easy as possible for Jewel. Things were going great even before Willow arrived. So ok, they were un orthodox family, but Jewel was always loved. Buffy took her shopping and ice skating whenever she could. Faith made sure that Jewel becomes sk8er buying her skateboard and appropriate cds. Dawn took her to all kind of museums and showed her labs both at hospital and at university. But bringing Jewel up with Willow and helping her to bring up Yuki sounded like the paradise.

Faith looked around and smiled knowingly.

-        Red? You just have to see this.

-        What?

Willow entered the room and gasped. Walls were painted in blue, along with the blue curtains and floor. In the middle of the room was a huge bed and when Faith jumped on it Willow realised it was water bed.

-        Awesome. This is great Faith. How did you find this house? I mean, it has everything. Kitchen, dining room, basement, three bathrooms, living room, study, master bedroom, guestroom and two bedrooms in the attic! This house is a dream house.

-        Dawn and I found it a while ago.

-        A while ago?

-        Yeah, when you phoned and said you were coming for a visit.

Willow jumped on a bed next to Faith and looked at her.

-        How did you know I was gonna stay?

-        Come on Will! I know you.

She shifted an lay on her back gazing at the light blue ceiling. Willow followed her example. They stayed that way for a moment before Willow decided to speak again.

-        Do you know where they are?

Faith cursed under breath. She knew this conversation was coming ever since Willow phoned to say she was coming for a visit, but somehow, she just wasn’t ready for it.

-        Mom’s on some conference on child psychology in Europe. She’s going to talk about how divorce and new marriage can effect children.

-        She has experience.

Willow turned on her hip and waited for Faith to do the same. When she did Willow continued.

-        If you don’t want to talk about it we don’t have to.

For a moment Faith wanted to reach out and hug Willow, but she couldn’t. Not now. She needed more time.

-        Thank you.

She jumped of the bed and ran towards the door.

-        Come on Red, you have to see back yard.

Willow did only thing she could- followed her.

Everyone was at table. Jewel and Yuki were sitting across from each other and smiled like they were having some kind of secret conversation. Buffy even thought for a moment that they were reading each other’s mind before she dismissed it. How could two kids do that? Next to Yuki was Faith who would poke her every once in a while. Next to Jewel, on the head of the table was Tara who was smiling at Willow who was sitting at the other side of Jewel. Just when Buffy was about to sit down a doorbell rang. Jewel jumped out of the chair and ran to the door. Yuki followed her.

As soon as she opened the door she smiled with delight and hugged Dawn.

-        Auntie Dawn!

-        Hey kiddo!

Yuki stood by the door and looked curiously at her aunt. This was the first time she actually saw Dawn. She didn’t come to Japan with the rest of the Scooby gang couple of years ago. And when they went to hospital to get their blood tested some nurse took her blood. But now she was looking at Dawn with eyes wide open. But Jewel was talking to her aunt so Yuki shifted her gaze to the dark haired girl. Allowing her eyes to ignore solid form she extended her vision and gazed at girls aura. So much pain, and so much loss.

-        Hello there.

Girl said something, Yuki was sure of that but she couldn’t stop reading. Not yet anyway. When she saw what she was looking for she smiled at girl.

-        Hello Lana.

Lana looked surprised for a moment before smiling back at the child.

-        You must be Yuki. So who told you my name?

-        I must have heard it somewhere.

Lana decided that it was best to let it slip for now. She was starting to feel uncomfortable under Yuki’s stare.

-        So… what’s so interesting on me?

-        Nothing. Welcome to our bed and breakfast. Please, join us at the table.

Dawn looked at them and smiled when Lana took Yuki’s hand in her own and followed her to the table. She was surprised when Yuki turned and winked at her. Jewel tried to stiff giggle but couldn’t. Sometimes her friend seemed so adorable.

Willow got up from her seat the moment Dawn entered the room. Brainy type Willow was made her think about blood tests for the whole day. She spent two hours at the hospital this morning just talking to younger girl about her work and college. Dawn still had to pass some exams on University. Sometimes, when she felt nostalgic, Willow imagined herself as some doctor. Maybe a pediatricion. Or surgeon. It wasn’t like she didn’t like her job, just sometimes she wondered if things would have been different if she stayed in Sunnyhell. Dawn mouthed “Wait” and that made Willow very nervous cause it meant something was weird. But as evening went on she soon forgot DNA test results. Everything was perfect. And she realized she wouldn’t mind doing this every day for the rest of her life. She glanced on the floor in living room where Dawn and Lana played cards with kids, then on couch where Buffy and Faith were making out. Slowly she pulled Tara towards the back yard. They sat on the grass and for a moment just enjoyed comfortable silence. Willow was the first to brake it.

-        Faith found me a house, here in Sunnydale, and I was thinking that maybe you and Jewel would like to move in. If it’s too soon for you we can wait but I just wanted you to know that you can move in anytime.

Tara looked at her thoughtfully.

-        When will you be moving out?

-        Next week, I think. I just… well, I wanna give some space to myself but also to Buffy and Faith.

-        I understand. I’ ll have to talk to Jewel about it first tough.

Like just remembering something Tara looked curiously at Willow.

-        How come FAITH found you house? I figured Buffy would do something like that. I mean, she’s your best friend.

Willow looked confused for a moment before she started laughing.

-        Oh Goddess, you don’t know!

Now Tara looked confused.

-        Don’t know what?

-        Faith is my sister. Well, step sister actually.

-        Sister?

-        Yeah, my mom divorced my father when I was 7 and married Faith’s father. We kinda didn’t like each other at first but… I guess we’ve gotten close cause we were alone all the time. We really started calling each other sister 2 years later when mum had a child.

Willow lifted her gaze and saw Tara smiling.

-        Meadow is your sister?

-        Yeah.

-        I should have noticed. She does have your eyes.

-        And Faith’s hair.

-        Goddess, I never thought. I met her that year I came to Sunnydale. While she was still living with Buffy and Dawn.

Tara leaned against tree and Willow put her head in Tara’s lap. Soft fingers were toying with red hair. They hardly had any time for themselves. Usually in the middle of the second kiss someone would barged in. Jewel, who wanted Willow to braid her hair. Yuki, who wanted Tara to tell her story of two witches. Buffy, who needed a shopping buddy. And, of course, Faith, who just wanted to tease Willow.

So any time they had alone they really appreciated.

-        Willow, tell me something about your past. All I know I heard from Buffy. And I’d really like to hear it from you.

Redhead relaxed under Tara’s hands and closed her eyes.

-        Well, after Meadow was born we actually had family for a year or two. Mom worked at home, dad had office in Sunnydale… paradise. But then everything got back to normal. Mom started going to conferences, dad went back to his office in L.A. Faith and I took care of Meadow, but then when I was 15 Faith just disappeared. She was just 13 years old so I was scared to death something would happen. Next year Buffy moved to Sunnydale and we met. The rest of the story you know. For the next two years I helped Buffy save the world. I tried everything to find Faith but she disappeared from the face of the Earth. We graduated and I felt so much pressure so I ran. First to Kyoto, then to Tokyo. I flew back home only once after that. And that was after Faith showed up at my doorstep one night. She looked like she didn’t eat or sleep for days. I remember her sleeping for two days before she told me she found out she was the slayer. When I told her I know Buffy we decided that it would be for the best if she went back to Hellmouth. I brought her home. They fell in love. That made me laugh for days. Ask Faith about it once, but wait for her to get wasted first.

For a moment Willow thought blonde fell asleep but then Tara spoke again.

-        And I thought MY family was complicated.

-        When will I hear your story?

-        Not tonight. But soon.

Willow smiled innocently.

-        So… we have some free time. What do you wanna do?

-        Guess.

And Tara slowly kissed Willow. Last coherent thought Willow had was “I just hope no one will decide to take a walk in the back yard.”

                * * *

Dawn was slowly walking down the road lost in her thoughts. She almost forgot that Lana was walking right next to her. Jed phoned her an hour ago saying that his mother is ill and he is heading to Huston to see her. Dawn felt nothing but pure joy, not because his mother was sick, but because she now had some time to decide what she really wants. And right now she didn’t want to part with her dark haired and awfully quiet friend.

-        So… did you tell Will and Tara about test results?

-        No. I intended to. But they ended up having… fun in the back yard so I just decided it’s best to wait for tomorrow.

They both laughed and Dawn shook her head lightly.

-        I will never forget just how red Faith looked when she got back in!

-        I think she was impressed.

-        She was! She just kept mumbling something like “that’s not possible”

-        I heard “I can do that!”.

That was it. Dawn finally realised what it was that made this night so pleasant. Laughing. That hardly happened when she was with Jed. But with Lana things were so different. For now she didn’t know what it really meant. But right now, she didn’t care.

-        Hey Lana?

-        Yeah?

-        Look, you live at the other side of the town. Why don’t you sleep at my place?

Lana looked surprised at Dawn’s suggestion.

-        I don’t know. What would your boyfriend say?

-        Well, he’s half way to Huston by now but even if he wasn’t I’m asking you to sleep at MY place, not his.

-        I thought you live together.

-        No. I actually live with my friend Meadow. She’s Will and Faith’s younger sister.

-        They have one more sister? What’s she like?

-        Yeah. Well think of Willow’s brain and Faith’s attitude.

-        Ouch.

-        Oh yeah. But she’s at college now so I have apartment for myself for two more weeks. Then she’s coming home.

Suddenly something popped into Dawn’s head. Something that wasn’t supposed to be there. But the more she thought about it the more determined she became. So she smiled for herself and took Lana’s hand in her own, pulling her to hurry up. She was on a mission and she intended on making it a good one.

UPDATE

Postby Shadow » Sat Jun 21, 2003 4:56 pm

I'm posting this update but be warned that it's not beta read so...:sigh I really try but I think I need to move to an english speaking area. any of you Kittens want a roomate :eyebrow I cook really good.

-        Faith?

Buffy stood in the kitchen holding phone in one hand and Jewel’s Po in the other one.

-        Come on Faith! Phone call!

Just as she was about to put the phone on the table a hand snitched it out of her hand. Before she knew it Faith was already speaking in the phone.

-        Yo Faith’s in da house… or on the phone in this case.

-        Heya F!

-        Shit! Is that you brat?

-        One and only.

-        Nice to hear from ya!

-        Heard that prodigal sister came crying back home

-        Yep, our own little prodigy is in Sunnyhell. Though not much with the crying. Thought about kicking her out for running away but she brought something with her I didn’t wanna give up.

-        My little niece? What’s she like?

-        She’s… smart, and funny and cute. Like me.

-        Yeah right. Think we can kidnap her and kick Willow’s ass? Maybe then she wouldn’t run away again.

-        Oh, not necessary Willow’s already staying.

-        So it’s working?

-        Is it working?

-        Well, if Willow’s stayin’ then it must be workin’ .

-        I don’t know kid. It was a wild shoot. I don’t even know if it is about them.

-        It is. It is. It is. I know it!

-        Ok munchkin, but I advise you to talk to Willow. She’ll know.

-        Ok, will so when I get home next week. Anything else you wanna share?

-        Oh yeah. Yesterday we had dinner and afterwards Tara and Red went to back yard. When I went to call them in… well, lets just put it this way if I wasn’t gay before…

Faith sat on the chair in the kitchen and watched Buffy closely with one eye while chatting with her favourite brat in the whole world. Of course she would never actually say that out loud.

-        I get it! I don’t need another visual about my sisters having sex!

Faith chuckled remembering when Meadow caught Buffy and her in compromising position which included kitchen table and ice cream. The youngest sister never ever wanted to eat of that table again so Buffy actually had to buy a new one. Thank god that was everything she saw cause they didn’t actually had enough money to refurnish every place she and Buffy had sex.

-        It’s all educational!

-        Bye Faith!

-        Bye brat!

Faith hung up and started laughing like crazy while Buffy just looked annoyed.

-        You do know she is very traumatized by what she saw that time?

-        That’s why I enjoy it so much!

Now both of them were laughing hard but them Buffy sober up.

-        What are two younger sisters hiding from the world and especially oldest sister?

If anything could make Faith sweat it was Buffy’s determined face. She was stubborn and if there was something she wanted to find out she probably would. So Faith decided to take different approach.

-        Look B. love ya and all that, but Meadow’s secret, not mine to tell.

That seemed to put Buffy at ease but Faith knew it wouldn’t be easy as that. For Meadow.

* * *

Small redhead walked slowly down the hall carrying Tigger in her arms. Tigger was too big for a little girl but she held him close to her body. Her strawberry blonde hair was cupping her face gently and her cheeks were red. She stopped in front of the door and slowly opened them. On the bed was a figure sleeping peacefully. Almost floating girl came closer to the bed and gently touched blonde hair on the pillow. Tara woke up almost immediately.

-        Willow?

Still sleepy she turned and took a closer look at her visitor.

-        Yuki?

Yuki pouted her lower lip and hugged Tigger closer.

-        I had a bad dream. Can I sleep with you?

Tara instantly picked Yuki up on her lap and hugged her. Not losing her grip on the Tigger she put one hand around Tara and pulled herself even more in Tara’s embrace.

-        Oh sweetie, can you remember what was it about?

Yuki just shook her head no and relaxed.

-        Don’t you want me to go and find your mommy?

Yuki shook her head one more time melting into Tara.

-        Mama-chan is sleeping with Jewel on the couch. I didn’t wanna wake both of them. Can I sleep with you Tara-chan?

Tara’s heart swell with love for the tiny redhead.

-        Of course you can honey.

Yuki pulled out of the embrace and familiar deep green eyes looked straight into blue ones.

-        Tara-chan can I ask you something?

Tara just smiled and nodded.

-        Can I call you mommy? Cause I heard Jewel call you like that and I call my mommy mama-chan so…

Yuki’s eyes were big and Tara froze for a moment. Pulling herself up in the bed she stroked little girl’s curls. Was she really that serious with Willow?

-        Yuki, let me tell you something, ok?

She waited for little girl to nod.

-        I want you to know that as far as I’m concerned, I’ll always be your mommy. I love you just as much as I love Jewel and I know you can’t understand this because neither can I… but I feel you. Inside. Just like I feel Jewel. So you are my daughter, at least in my heart. Ok?

Smile on the girl’s face warmed Tara’s heart.

-        Nice lady told me you are my mommy.

Tara looked confused for a moment before she pulled herself out of bed. With Yuki in her arms she stormed through the house until she was in the living room. Willow and Jewel were cuddled up together and Tara stopped for a moment and smile.

-        Don’t wake them mommy. They look so peaceful.

Going up the stairs again Tara realised she knew what she had to do.

-        What do you say that you and I go for a little visit to your Auntie Dawn?

-        Ok.

“I will find out what is going on. I have to.”

* * *

-        Are you kidding me?

-        No! It was hilarious event. Willow was running away from the horse and Meadow was running after them trying to stop horsie and Faith was rolling on the ground laughing like crazy.

It was almost six am and Lana and Dawn were still talking. They were sitting on the cheerful blue couch drinking juice and retelling all the stories they could think of. They never got to bed since they couldn’t stop talking. Somehow they just had to tell everything to each other. Dawn was the one talking most of the time since Lana couldn’t remember who she was.

-        So… you remember stuff… about medicine and everything but you can’t remember your name?

Black haired girl smiled sadly.

-        I remember some things. Like big library with lots of medicine books. And I remember a lab… and skeleton which I’m pretty sure I used to scare someone. Boy maybe 7 years old with hair black as night and green eyes. I don’t know who he is though I know I loved him very much.

Just as Dawn was about to speak doorbell rang. Before she even had a chance to answer it Tara came in the room with Yuki wide awake in her arms.

-        Sorry for barging in like this but I have to know what did the DNA test say.

Lana was the one who passed papers to Tara’s hands.

-        Mommy is Auntie Dawn going to help you?

Dawn and Lana looked at Tara who just shrugged.

-        Tara, sit down. This might be a little bit hard to comprehend...
