I believe that Warren has the family name of "Asshole". Heh.

Sorry, couldn't resist that.

However, there is a surname mentioned somewhere in Season 5. In I Was Made To Love You Willow finds a name on the computer...here's the script exerpt:

WILLOW: Hey! I think I found him. A Warren Mears. He went to Sunnydale High with us for a semester, and then he went to the tech college over in Dutton. I've got a local address where his folks still live.

Hope that's the right one. I couldn't find a surname for Katrina though. And hey, I'm a big fat geek! :lol

Ruth/Katharyn:

One idea to save time might be to write the fic with codes intact, post it on the board, then copy & paste the posting back into a fresh Word copy. This preserves at least the simple tags like italics (I just tested this using a bit of "Final Exam" - :shy ).

Also re: Warren - could his name be spelt "Meres" - that's a sort of cesspit or swamp isn't it?

I don't mind angst. I really like angst, but I am very concerned about a current trend that has serious violence perpetrated against Willow and Tara. I don't think this is the place to be posting about Tara almost getting raped. It's not something I am comfortable with at all. I pulled a fic today, because of some complaints. And I am considering adding something to the FAQ about it.

*editing to clarify. I am talking about extreme graphic violence agaisnt Willow and Tara. There is a difference between saying he was choking her and describing the way his fingers pressed on her throat. I have to question why the latter is needed. It's like BtVS, I never minded angst, Tara getting chased in Superstar. Did I need to see Buffy struggling against spike's attempted rape? no..

Angst & Violence

Postby urnofosiris » Wed Jun 12, 2002 12:37 am

Agreed, angst is ok, but some of the things I have read lately, well let's just say, if I wanted to see that I would start watching the show again. It is not easy to draw a distinct clear line, but it is easier to see when it gets crossed.

Angst and violence. Hmm. I like angst when it's well thought out and is an integral part of the story. However, violence is one of those very gray areas where it's hard to justify extreme violence. And you know, I go back to my original appreciation for Pens; it's a safe haven for Willow and Tara. Now I'm not saying that all the stories should be hugs and puppies because god knows, we thrive on variety here, always have. But there are plenty of other places on the internet where you can see these two girls being put through all sorts of crap. Unnecessary crap, that is. I don't expect to see it here on Pens and I don't want to see it here on Pens.

That's just my personal view of course. I may be wrong. But here I expect stories to have a positive and less damaging conclusion than the season we've just seen. Honestly, I think that some writers are taking their tips from Joss Whedon and that in itself is not a good thing.

Eh, sorry for being ranty. Honest opinion. Not always helpful; I realise that. Sorry.

And uh, Bagheera....naughty girl.

tommo, I already knew that was his middle name. Now I have a full name: Warren Misogynist Bastard Mears.

Though now I'm thinking is should be some kind of post-name tag, so that he could be Warren Mears MBA

Re: Angst vs Violence

Postby Rally » Fri Jun 14, 2002 9:29 am

Getting back to the angst vs violence topic once more. The thing that is alarming is the number of visits to the hospital that the girls have been making of late in fics. It seems one or the other is in a coma or some life threatening situation.

Now certainly, if the fiction deals with supernatural storylines, vamps, demons and what not, you expect there would be some potential for thread and danger. But it seems lately as though they are always in harms way. Remember your source here, prior to Seeing Red a lot of the Buffy violence was comical in nature. The girls have been tossed around by vamps and trolls and what not with barely a scratch. So if they can manage to stay out of trouble in the show, for the most part, I would hope the same would apply to fics.

As for using violence and or injury to create angst, well, it at this point has been over done. Perhaps it's time to find some other ways of creating angst.

Kittens are clever, I am sure you can all find much more interesting ways to propel your stories then by another round of sitting in the hospital lobby.

Officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

Re: Angst vs Violence

Postby molsongrrrl » Fri Jun 14, 2002 1:08 pm

i have to agree -- there has been a lot of violence in the stories lately -- hospital visits all over the place.

i like angst, but the violence is starting to bother me ... perhaps more so because this season on the show there were so many rape references flying around, i guess i just would rather not read it in willow/tara fic.

pens is a safe haven for willow/tara fic -- i visit the willtara board on yahoo and i find willow/buffy stories -- or willow/tara/buffy stories ... over on wiccan ways i read a story with spike raping tara. i mean give me a break.

i visit pens most often because it is monitored so well and monitored to keep away that kind of stuff ... and i appreciate it!

I actually am trying my hand at a fic ... creative writer i am not -- but gonna challenge myself ... but no violence and just willow/tara goodness ...

ok this is disturbing.... violence against our girls on this board? WTF?!

I'm all for angst but not violence, i cant stand it. things are screwed up as enough already. i haven't been able to read most of the fics (scheduling issues), but i'm currently following like five at the same time and it's hurting my leetle brainy.

good to know the mods are firewalling certain topics/fics because i'm just not in the mood to read about violence, especially towards W or T. I vote more snuggles less struggles. if i wanted that i'd watch the last three ep's of BTVS. i mean i've had W or T in the hospital lately but it was for a happy occasion. ;) teehee...

THANK YOU xita, brian and garfiled for yer constant vigilance. HUGS!

Postby Rane018 » Sat Jun 15, 2002 4:00 pm

questions like this can be yahoo'd... or go to about.com.... for example i found this:

***********************************

The wedding rehearsal is followed by a dinner for members of the wedding party. The grooms parents traditionally are responsible for the financial obligation of the rehearsal dinner, however any other close relative or friend may do the honor.

All attendants, the bride and her fiancé's immediate families, the officiate and spouse, as well as any out-of-town guests are included in the guest list. Family and friends of the bride or the host may also be invited. It is considerate to invite the spouse or significant other of each attendant.

The rehearsal dinner is usually held in a private home or a restaurant and is as formal or informal as the host would like, just so long as the wedding remains the main attraction. At some point during the evening, the best man offers a toast to the bride and groom. The groom then follows with a toast to his bride and her parents. The bride may follow with a toast her groom and his family.

If the attendants gifts have not already been passed out, now is the time to do so. An early evening is suggested as the events of the following day will be exhausting. The bride and her attendants will appreciate their beauty sleep.

***********************************

BTVS related questions are easy to answer but other ones just dont have anything to do with that. maybe we should keep in mind OT questions posted here should really be asked after you've done a search and come up with nil. or if you want more guidance as to were to look.

that's just my opinion...

Re: Angst & Violence

I agree that you don't want to have violence for violence sake. However in the world which Willow and Tara live violence is practically a daily occurence. If you are putting them at the centre of the story then some of that violence is going to be directed at them. Saying that I think the violence should be either be mild and in the background, or if it is serious it should be as a means to take you to somewhere in the plot, and of course you should aim for a positive ending which precludes any permanent damage to either Willow or Tara. Though I trust certain other characters suffering, oh lets say Riley for a totally random example :) , would be fair game?

Tara: No, I understand you have to be with the

Re: Angst & Violence

Postby Sassette » Sun Jun 16, 2002 6:00 pm

I think the tricky thing about violence on this board is that, as a W/T 'shippers board (or, rather THE W/T 'shippers board *G*) most, if not all, of the people reading expect to be getting stories that focus on romance rather than action. It's a pretty logical assumption, when you think about it.

That is not to say that violence or angst can't be worked into a story in this forum. God knows I deal in plenty of the former and a few spatterings of the latter. The important thing to remember is that if you're worried about the violence content of your fic, e-mail a mod and check! The mods are very hard-working dedicated people, and they're certainly not going to be mad that you checked with them ... I'm sure they prefer it. But also remember ... the more >graphic< the violence, the greater the likelihood that you need to check.

So, if at any point, you've checked with a mod about violence and they've ok'd it, are you done? Nope.

At that point, it's probably a good idea to include a heavy violence warning in the disclaimers. The more detailed the disclaimer, the better - use your discretion. Of course, there's a kind of balancing act between giving away your story and disclaiming it properly ... just try to err on the side of caution, because it's nice.

And for Pete's Sake, Read the Disclaimers. If you find the content of a story objectionable, and the nature of that content was clearly disclaimed, I have absolutely no sympathy for you. Now, if a writer has objectionable content in their fic that they didn't bother to disclaim accurately, I have no sympathy for >them< either, so y'know, it goes both ways.

I guess my point is that we all know what we're comfortable with ... but we have no friggin' clue what >other< people are comfortable with - so it's important to be careful and considerate. So basically, check with a mod if you're worried about your content (and if it even remotely crosses your mind, you should probably be worried), institute appropriate disclaimers, and if you're checking out a new story, don't skip the disclaimers - read the blasted things. That's why they're there.

-Sass

I've seen Xita's and Rally's avatars and I got an idea for something. Can anyone get me screencaps of say...Xita's avatar...as smooth as Xita's avatar. Maybe around 320 x 240 size. I've got an idea just no means of doing it without nice caps.

I made 2 pens archive today. I moved completed fics out of the archive and put them in their own board. You can also now reply in those boards, but the posts will have to be approved cause I don't want any new threads in the archives. Also I will be moving completed fics out of Main pens. Though not any recently completed ones. If you spot mistakes let me know.

Three questions

Postby Sheridan » Mon Jun 17, 2002 3:37 am

For future reference I need to know some stuff, just point me to the right page if it's already up:

1) Which US states allow same sex marriages?

2) Can someone give me an outline of Wiccan marriage practices?

3) Is there any sort of blessing ceremony in Wicca which would be equivalent to Christian baptism? And I mean the baptism of infants rather than adults.
