Re: Gift - season 5

Thanks Pipsqueak, yes that's quite helpful. DMW, also thanks - very useful info.

You know I've heard about people like me. But I never made the connection. They walk one road to set them free, And find they've gone the wrong direction. But there's no need for turning back 'cause all roads lead to where I stand. And I believe I'll walk them all No matter what I may have planned

Shooting scripts

Postby darkmagicwillow » Wed Feb 12, 2003 10:42 am

The original Buffy shootscripts can also be found at Psyche, but I was wondering if anyone had an index of what is in these scripts but which didn't make it to the show. I'm primarily interested in moments that involve Willow and/or Tara of course.

Genetics

Postby AntigoneUnbound » Thu Feb 13, 2003 11:07 am

OK, Kittens, here's a question you might not have heard before: Can two blue-eyed people have a child that isn't blue-eyed? If I remember correctly, blue is a recessive eye color such that both parents have to carry that gene in order for their children to have blue eyes. But does this mean that the children will definitely have blue eyes?

I'm about to describe someone's eye color and it's not really a big deal, but now my curiosity has got the better of me and considering the brain power on this board, I figured someone would know.

Yours in Mendelian Musings,

Re: Shooting scripts

Postby darkmagicwillow » Thu Feb 13, 2003 11:10 am

Mina, that's a great page. Thanks! Probably another good one for the FAQ.

Antigone, it is possible for two blue eyed parents to have a brown eyed child even though blue eyes are a recessive trait. I tried to look up why, but apparently we haven't found all the genes for eye color yet. Here's a short introduction to the genetics of human eye color.

Another question: what are some good references on wicca? I know about www.wicca.org and there's an interesting article about Real Wicca which contrasts the Wiccan religion with shows like Buffy and Charmed, but I'm sure practitioners of the craft would know more than I do.

Anatomy question

Postby Jennpurr » Tue Feb 18, 2003 6:37 pm

Hey guys,

I feel really kinda, stupid and embarrassed for having to ask this question, but... here goes.

Is there a specific term to describe the adam's apple in a woman? I know men have adam's apples, but what is the term for a woman, or would it be the same?

I have a reason for asking this and it has to do with my fic, so I'm hoping someone can help me out here.

Thanks in advance,

Jen

um, i dont think girls have prominent looking "adam's apple" hence the adam part of the name for the men. it's your voice box in laymans terms and larynx in medical terms.

Re: Anatomy question

Postby Bagheera » Tue Feb 18, 2003 7:47 pm

Jen,

The area colloquially known as the "Adam's apple" is the laryngeal prominence, where the two plates of the thyroid cartilage meet in the midline to form a projection that can be felt under the skin.

Gray's Anatomy doesn't mention a specific name for this body part in women. It's the same structure, it's just that the size of the two cartilage plates and the angle at which they meet are different in women than in men. The plus side is that in women it's more subtle and you need careful observation and more intimate contact to find it!

Edited to add: PS: It's not strictly correct to use the term "larynx". That refers to the structure as a whole - the whole "voice box and dice" as it were.

Hee... the intimate contact to find it, isn't a problem. OH.. take a lookey here: kinda the whole reason for the question. :)

I was just worried about the terminology. I know it's more prominent in men, I just didn't want to make myself look like a fool if I used the wrong word.

I think I will just stick with using larynx. :)

Thanks, B. :bigkiss **HUGS**

Re: Boardgame?

Postby Lucy Moore » Sat Feb 22, 2003 5:41 am

Can anyone tell me what the boardgame Snakes and Ladders is called in the USofA? Here in the UK it's called Snakes and Ladders...(Duh!)()...Two players use a dice to determine the number of moves;landing on a ladder moves you up a few levels, but landing on the snake's head tumbles you down to wherever the tail is...Thanks,need it for a scene in a new Fic.

Lucy, it's called "Snakes and Ladders" here too.

deixs, there's no reason that they have to live in Sunnydale in the future. There are plenty of fics where they don't. In many ways, another setting makes it easier if you want to write a story just about Willow and Tara.

Oh yeah, lots of interesting tales of W/T outside of Sunnydale. Realisitically how many people stay in one town their whole life? Some, definitely but not all. Tara already left home to come to Sunnydale.

I think that many stories (including my own) choose to stay in Sunnydale simply because it is a known quantity. A pre-existing world that has pre-existing characters. Much easier on the writer.

So long as they are happy and together they can be anywhere.

Lucy, when I was little I played a game called "Chutes and Ladders" that sounds like the same thing .... except instead of snakes there were slides (you know, like on a playground). They may sell the snake version here in the US too, I dunno, but I've only ever heard of the "Chute" version. Hope this helps!

Buffy Philosophy

Postby darkmagicwillow » Tue Feb 25, 2003 4:45 pm

These are a couple of good sites for the FAQ that I've found interesting while researching all things Buffy. The philosophy site is particularly interesting, including an analysis of metaphysics (magics?) and ethics of each episode.

Where can I find information about the metaphysics (how magic, vampires, and slayers work) and ethics of Buffy?

All Things Philosophical on BtVS

Where can I find information about and pictures of Buffy villains?

Tribute movies

Postby Eelzuhtjuh » Wed Feb 26, 2003 4:29 am

I'd like to make my own tribute movie (in avi or wmv format)

does anyone know a good (freeware would be appreciated) programme to make that kind of movies, where you can edit scenes en sounds etc?

Thanks!

~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~

Never mind this question anymore, I found my answer

but for those who'd like to know

I found this programme called Windows movie maker. It's for XP only (as far as I know).

Here's a little description of the programme:

Windows Movie Maker 2 is an XP-only download that gives you the tools to create, edit, and share home movies. Compile and edit a movie from video clips with drag-and-drop functionality. Add special effects, music, and narration with ease. Share your movie over the Web or master it to DVD media. You can also save your movie back to the DV tape in your camera.

If you like you can download it here

I also found a programme to cut video files called virtual dub.

Description:

VirtualDub is a video capture and processing utility licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is designed to be a general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program. It does not possess the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files, which you can extend with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is best at processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and handle BMP image sets.

you can download that one here

So now I can get to work :D New tribute coming soon

(uhmm yeah as soon as i found out exactly how it all works and have good idea, song etc. etc.)

Watcher's Council

Postby darkmagicwillow » Sun Mar 02, 2003 8:46 pm

Is there any evidence that the Watcher's Council knows that Buffy died at the end of season 5? Or that they know who the Key is? I can't recall any interactions with the WC in season 6 or any evidence that Giles went back to work for them in England despite being reinstated as a Watcher in Checkpoint. I can see Giles avoiding telling them about the Key when lets them know that Glory is dead, but telling them about Buffy is different, especially with the potential at that point for another Slayer being called, though I can see him wanting to wait to deal with it.

I would imagine that the Watcher's Council knew about Buffy's death, especially with Giles returning to them at the start of Season 6. I would think that he probably informed them over the summer about Buffy and what had happened.

HTML Processing

Postby darkmagicwillow » Wed Mar 05, 2003 7:08 pm

As I recall someone asking for a way to remove HTML from their files, I thought I'd post that I've written a script to do that. I can't post it here as ezboard will mangle it, but if you want it, you can email me.

I also wrote one that changes the partial HTML markup files that we post on Pens into standards compliant HTML markup files that you can view in any browser.

Greek anyone?

Postby Kieli » Thu Mar 06, 2003 11:55 am

I was wondering if any Kitten spoke Greek. I'm looking for a little dialogue in modern Greek but need help with the sentence construction (this coming from the woman who is presently attempting to translate Avern's story written entirely in Czech to English :shock It's odd but somehow not as bad as I thought). Thanks!

Ratings

Postby Patches » Fri Mar 07, 2003 12:01 am

Hey, just curious - what differentiates "R" from "NC17" in Pens? The Canadian rating system stops at "R" (restricted to ages 18 and over) and covers everything. I have just a vague notion that NC17 applies if there are sex scenes. Also, when do you change the rating on your story if you're going to write "nasty" bits, but haven't yet?

Thanks.

Postby Rane018 » Fri Mar 07, 2003 8:57 pm

nakedness wise... R- is nudity and "lite" sex scenes, nc-17 usually means graphic/heavy sex scenes. both include objectable language and violence.

as for rating your fics i believe there is a way to rate each update so if you've got a generally R fic and there happens to be a NC17 part you can post that rating with that particular update. nad i'm a silly otter cause i just saw the bar up there that has the posticon for the rating of your update. so yeah you can individually rate your updates.
