Just a note to say I looked at your site, and wanted to drop you a note. Don't think your email address is working.

hey eyes are blue and i really doubt it she wears colored contacts. light eyes tend to change pigment with lighting and the surrounding colors of their clothes or evnironment.

Amber's Eyes

Postby elessar007 » Tue Mar 11, 2003 1:19 am

I can't say with any definitive authority that Amber's eyes are blue. But I can tell you that I have green eyes that change to an almost navy blue depending on my mood and health. I am willing to bet that Amber does not wear colored contacts.

I can say with certainty that her eyes are blue. It was one of the first questions I asked her back when she showed up at the bronze. Her eyes just appear differently with lighting.

Thanks for clearing that up Xita. I was pretty sure she didn't wear colored lenses but didn't want to give an absolute statement to the fact. I've been wrong in the past and I'm sure the future holds the same.

It's sort of a relief to know her eyes are naturally that color. I find her eyes so engaging that it just wouldn't be the same if I knew the color was manufactured.

Wanted you to know Jenn that I checked out your site and sent you an email yesterday. Hope to see more of your stories soon.

What does AU stand for?

Hey, unofficially, you know what they say, they aren't any dumb questions, the only dumb thing is not to ask. ;)

AU means "alternate universe" and it's just a story that sort of veers away from the way it's been presented on TV (or movies or books or wherever).

Here's a site that defines terms commonly used in fanfiction - The Fanfiction Glossary.

Recommendations

Postby darkmagicwillow » Tue Mar 25, 2003 6:01 pm

I just saw the Pens recommendations thread come up again, and while I love that thread, I'd like to see a new recommendations thread, one that recommends stories that aren't on Pens. While the average quality of Pens is better than any other fic site I've found, there are some really other good authors out there and I'd like to find more of them. I don't know if this would be an appropriate thread for Pens, or whether it would be better suited for another forum here through.

Re: Recommendations

We can't really have a thread on Pens that recommends fic that isn't here.

Pens is a haven for Willow, Tara, Aly, and Amber, unlike a lot of the sites that might be getting linked to in a non-Pens fic recommendation thread.

i agree, holley. after all, even fanfic sites like wiccan ways are no longer just willow tara. plus we've got lot's of great fics here on the pens that need the exposure. i guess it'd help to finish the fics too ;) but there are a lot of fics right here people may have missed and i love discovering fics. that was the original intention of the recommedation thread wasn't it?

maudmac, that's why I asked where such a thread should be posted as it didn't seem quite appropriate to Pens. It sounds like you're confirming my original thought that the Kitten, where there are already threads recommending books, TV shows, and movies of all types, would be more appropriate. I'm not sure why the site issue came up as I mentioned the thread would be for recommendations for particular stories, not sites, and I would expect people to link to the individual W/T stories, though perhaps that would be worth making clear in the first post.

Actually, dmw, it wouldn't fit there either since there is no Buffy stuff allowed on the the Kitten and no fanfic outside of Pens. So there is no place for this thread anywhere.

Re: recommendations

Postby darkmagicwillow » Wed Mar 26, 2003 2:59 pm

What about the new Witches&Vixens forum? It says it's for anything about Willow and Tara, the FAQ doesn't say anything about fanfic recommendations, and people already discuss Buffy novelizations which have a lot less W/T in them than many fanfic stories. While I won't intentionally post anything that violates a rule of xita's, I can't find any rule against my suggested thread in either FAQ, and if there is one, I'd like to know the reasons why we can't discuss non-Pens W/T fanfic while we can discuss Buffy novels with minor W/T content.

Re: recommendations

Postby urnofosiris » Wed Mar 26, 2003 3:21 pm

We only discuss the WT contents from those books, and we know those contents, general buffy discussion would be off limits. We will not be discussing or recommending fics outside of the WT fics on the Pens. We cannot make sure that what is in those fics does not violate the FAQ. We have posted that we are working on the FAQ, but the guidelines on the new creative forum already says no fanfic of any kind. It would not be consistent if we let a fanfic thread be posted on the Kitten and Witches & Vixens, it is for WT and AA discussion not fanfic. The Pens is for WT and AA creative stuff. There is no other place to put fanfic. We want to keep the focus on WT. We do not want to distract from it by specifically discussing, posting or linking fanfic from other shows or WT fic we do not know the contents of. The Pens provides more than enough WT fics to discuss or recommend.

There is no need to specifically say in the faq that (non) WT fanfic can't be posted on the Kitten or the Witches & Vixens forum. It goes without saying that when it is stated on the creative forum that we you can't post fanfic of any kind that that would include linking, and if you can't do it on the creative forum, which would be the only appropriate place for it, you also can't do it on the discussion forum. We have already expanded the scope of the board, but there are some limits we will not move past.

I think I am done editing now. :happy

Thanks for the explanation, DrG. I know you were probably intentionally phrasing your explanation broadly, but I did want to repeat that I was only interested in a W/T fic recommendation thread and not a general fic recommendation thread.

While it was established that Dawn (or more precisely her blood) could open a portal between dimensions there have been passing references in season 6 that she was no longer capable of doing this. Can anyone clarify?:read

Lesbadar, the first thing that comes to my mind is a scene with Dawn and Spike at the beginning of "Bargaining", where Dawn says:

Quote:
DAWN: But I'm fine alone. It's not like anyone's coming after me. I'm not the key. Or if I am, I don't open anything any more. It's over. Remember?
Of course, this could just be wishful thinking by Dawn; it's never been proven that she doesn't have Magical Key powers anymore. But this is the closest they've come to saying so onscreen.

Hope this helps!

portal wise her blood would not open anything anymore because the ritual could only be performed on a certain date (i think). they'd have to wait another 1000 years to try to open it again or something. as for powers from the key energy, it's never been said Dawn's got actual powers of any kind. i figure they would have explored that if she did. joyce's ressurection doesn't count (witchcraft in buffyverse can be done by anyone, ie xander and sweet).

I don't think the series has said anything definite about the Key, as that statement from Dawn doesn't seem to indicate that the Scoobies had done any research on the topic, so if you want to explore Dawn's Keyness in a fic, I don't think you're violating canon. I loved Tulipp's ideas about Dawn in Terra Firma.

Dawn and shoplifting

Hello Kittens-

When did Dawn start going klepto? IIRC it's season 6, but I'm not sure.

Thanks everyone.

Jixer,

I believe, if I'm not wrong, the first episode where it was hinted that Dawn was stealing was the halloween episode in Season 6, right? She took a coin or something from the Magic Box? Am I right, guys?

Hope that helps. I'm not sure if they showed anything before that. Sorry. :(

She did take the coin from the Magic Box in "All The Way", but it actually started in Season 5, when she stole Anya's (they were Anya's, right?) earrings in "Intervention".

Music in Fics

Postby Patches » Sat Apr 05, 2003 8:25 pm

Was wondering if anyone knows the copyright rules for using the lyrics from a song in fiction (Pens and elsewhere). Is there a general prohibition against such things? I vaguely recall reading or hearing somewhere that one must/should? obtain the artist's permission before including their intellectual property in an original work. I know fan fic bends quite a few of the standard rules.

Your wonderful wisdom is welcomed (I couldn't find anything specific on the net. Grateful thanks!

Cheers!!

Patches

p.s. Mods, if this belongs in the 'Writing discussion thread,' please move it, as my request applies to both Pens fic and works of general fic. Mucho thanks :bigkiss

You know I've heard about people like me. But I never made the connection. They walk one road to set them free, And find they've gone the wrong direction. But there's no need for turning back 'cause all roads lead to where I stand. And I believe I'll walk them all No matter what I may have planned

patches... i'd say it's like when we use dialogue from the show. simply disclaim it's not yours in the beginning and who wrote it and such.

I'm being very lazy as I haven't read all the pages of this thread, so if this has already been asked and answered, Sorry.

But, does anyone know how old Anyanka is? I was going to go with 1200 yrs but I know there are different names for her so I wondered, if there are various ages too.

Thanks for any help.

"Selfless", a Season 7 ep, establishes that Anya first became a vengeance demon in 880 AD. That would make her 1123 years old now, if you start counting from that point. (I'm guessing she was probably around 20 human years old, possibly less, when she got demonized.) Also, in "Doppelgangland" in Season 3, she tells the bartender that she's 1120 years old.

(sorry for the mention of S7, but it's kinda relevant)
