RIP - Chuck Jones - 1912-2002

Postby BBOvenGuy » Fri Feb 22, 2002 10:32 pm

Charles M. "Chuck" Jones, creator of Pepe Le Pew, the Road Runner and the Grinch, co-developer of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and many many more, mastermind behind some of the most brilliant cartoons from the Warner Brothers golden age, has passed away at his home in Corona del Mar, CA. He was 89.

I'll miss him.

Details can be found here.

A fitting tribute for a great talent would be these three simple words:

That's all folks!

He will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck Jones in my early days (early 80's) of fandom. Somewhere I have his autograph, in my collection of things that have followed my around my entire life.
He will be missed.

Oh, that is sad. A huge talent and he will be missed. In farewell, I utter one of my favorite lines, the immortal words of Marvin the Martian: "the plutonium Q36 explosive space modulator!"

That is sad, but it also seems like he had a full and good life so that at least is a comfort.

In fact he really is sort of immortal now. Those great cartoons are going to be around forever. My youngest brother will be bummed. He worshipped the ground that Chuck Jones walked on. He's an aspiring cartoonists/artist.

Oh that's very sad. At least his memory will be immortalised in his well and widely loved creations.

May he rest in peace.

The truly sad loss of a great American artist--an artist as important as any of the "serious" artists whose works are found in museums.

Chuck Jones was, along with George Dunning, one of my heroes, while studying animation at college. I have a book he wrote, called Chuck Amuck, which, as animation and drawing was invested into every corner of his life, was pretty much an autobiography. It's fun, great if you want to learn about animation, and often quite touching - his description of Johnson the sea-swimming, grapefruit-wearing cat, accompanied by his wonderful drawings, is, frankly, and excuse the Britishism, a delight. Lots of interesting insights on how he created/developed his characters. Need I say he was a genius? His mastery of melding draughtmanship, composition, movement, colour, expression and humour (with just the right amount of bite) was unrivalled in my opinion.

I shall have to dig out For Scentimental Reasons, and What's Opera, Doc? (the two cartoons that won him oscars) and have a watch again.

A great man.

From "THE RABBIT OF SEVILLE"

Bugs (Singing to the music of Rossini's Overture to "The Barber of Seville"):
HOW DOOOOOOOOO!
Welcome to my shop,
Let me cut your mop,
Let me shave your crop!

Daintily....Daintily......

HEY YOOOOOOUUUUUUU!
Don't look so perplexed,
Why must you be vexed?
Can't you see you're next?

Yes, you're next...OOOOhhhhh so next!

Now we must begin the scraping,
It's no use to try escaping,
Kick and scream and rant rave,
It's no use you need a shaaaaaave!
etc

I have a friend who has recently turned me on to the SciFi Channel show Farscape. (She's also into Buffy.) So she's been explaining the series, and last night we got together to watch some of the latest episodes that she had taped. She showed me one where the "hero" character gets knocked out, falls into a coma and starts hallucinating. (For any Farscape fans, I think it's the one called "Revenging Angel".) In his mind, everything becomes a cartoon. He is American, from Texas actually, and everything in his cartoon world is a referance to Looney Tunes, with occasional other things thrown in (Roger Rabbit) It was so funny to watch! My friend looked at me strangely as I giggled, feeling like I was watching the old Bugs Bunny Road Runner show, and anticipating all the familiar sight gags and twists. It was lovely timing to be watching this as I'd been thinking about Chuck Jones and all that he has given us.
