Events is Chicago, Women's History

Hope this is fine. Feel free to change or move as needed, but it looks fairly on topic to me.

This was sent to me this week (someone has not told them I no longer work for UIC) and thought some of the Chicago area kitties might be interested.

quote:

Nationally known author and activist Leslea Newman will be on campus Tuesday, March 12 as part of the Women's History Month Programs. If you don't know, Leslea Newman wrote the controversial book Heather Has Two Mommies. Ms. Newman will be doing three presentations on Tuesday March 12.

March 12 6:30-8:00 Room 2433 EPASW
An intimate conversation with Ms. Newman
First, I am pleased to announce that Ms. Newman will be giving a special reading in my doctoral seminar, (Gender, Sexuality, and Adolescent Development) on Tuesday evening. Ms. Newman will read a new story about a young female-to-male transgender person and the development or unfolding of his identity. Ms. Newman will also discuss and engage us in a conversation around the connections between literature and research. I would like to extend an invitation to you to join us for this conversation, however, because of limited space I am trying to keep this somewhat controlled. If you would like to come or know of students who would like to come please let me know ahead of time so that I can make arrangements.

Also on March 12....

12-1:30 Levine Hillel Center
You Can't be a Lesbian--You're Jewish: Leslea Newman
This talk will focus on Newman's volume titled A Letter to Harvey Milk and will focus on issues of religion, sexuality, family, and trust. All are welcome.

2-4 pm Room 605 CCC:
Heather's Mommy Speaks Out: Leslea Newman
This talk and media presentation will center on the controversy surrounding the book Heather Has Two Mommies, as well as a discussion of issues related to homophobia, censorship, and family values. (This would be an especially worthwhile opportunity for students in elementary or middle level education.)

12-1:30 Cardinal Room, CCC
Both Sides now: An Academic Woman Once a Man: Deirdre McCloskey
UIC Professor of Economics will discuss her experiences of changing genders within a University Community.

Check the Women's History Month Calendar for more information on these events, as well as others. (I have it posted on my door.) Which does not help you. I'll try to get a copy for anyone that wants it. - WW

Finally, for the second time the Office for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns and others will be hosting a SAFE ZONE Training for all UIC students, staff, and faculty. The training is this coming Tuesday, Febraury 26 from 2-4 in room 329 CCC(Cardinal Room). SAFE ZONE is a national program dedicated to training faculty, staff, and students at colleges and universities to become safe people for GLBTQ students.

I hope that you will take advantage of some of these opportunities, as well as encourage your students and colleagues to take advantage of them.

My Best,
Stacey

CCC is the Chicago Circle Center and it is near the corner of Halsted and Harrison.
EPASW is Education, Performing Arts and Social Work. It is located at 1040 W. Harrison. Also known as my old office!
The Levine Hillel Center is located behind the CCC if I remember correctly.

If you want to go, plase contact Dr. Horn personally. The classrooms in EPASW are small and Doctoral seminars are soooo boring otherwise. I could also talk to Dr. Horne if anyone wants to go that route.

I do not know Dr. Horn personally, only by her scholarship. She was hired after I left. But if you go you might get to meet Dr. Bill Ayers. A great guy who has a proven track record of scholarship for gay/race/gender equal rights. Ask to see his FBI most wanted posters of him as his wife! They are former student activists.

Personall note: The UIC campus has had some crime recently. It is not widely known, but as I said I am still on the faculty mailing lists. So if you do go, go in groups. Especially if you take the Blue Line "L".

I won't be going myself. Not for any reason other than I live in the 'burbs now and getting down to UIC is a big pain.
