'Observer' gay and lesbian travel special

Postby tyche » Sun Feb 24, 2002 8:22 am

My paper had a special edition of its travel section devoted to gay and lesbian issues today: go here and then scroll down a bit to read the articles. Stephanie Theobald's article about slang words for lesbians and lesbianism in diffent countries is pretty entertaining and definitely worth a read.
There's also a story mentioning that Barclaycard have stopped using Sandals resorts (which only accept bookings from heterosexual couples) in their promotions after protests from customers. Just goes to show that consumer protest does occasionally work. I hope that the angry email about Sandals I sent to a certain bridal magazine (which will remain nameless because I wouldn't want to upset Cosmopolitan Bride - oops, slip of the tongue there ) this morning will have some effect. I really do not understand why they seem to assume that, just b/c you're engaged, you won't mind discrimination against gay and lesbian couples. I would not want to go on honeymoon to a place which discriminates in this way, and my fiance wouldn't either. And that, kitties, is my rant for the day.

That's interesting except for the fact that tortillera doesn't mean omelette maker, it means tortilla maker. Unless in the UK and omelette isn't made with eggs. A tortilla(thin unleavened pancake made from cornmeal or wheat flour) is made by molding the mixture with your hands, tiny claps and rubs give it the round familiar shape. Anyway, the origin of the term I imagine is a comparison between that motion and tribadism. Anyway, I don't think the term originates in Spain as tortillas are a latin American thing. And having lived in central america and the us, i have never been called tortillera, the term that was favored when I was growing up was "marimacha" while here in LA a gay man is a "joto" My knowledge of slang is only limitted to spanish so I don't know about the rest

Maybe they were refering to the Spanish meaning of "tortilla". In Spain a tortilla is a kind of omelette with potatoes (very tasty in my opinion ).

And a gay man is called "marica " or "maricón " in Spain.

Anyway, it's an interesting article.

very interesting article... thanks for sharing...

it's always so interesting how slang is so very culture/language specific... and I for one would like to know whether I was being insulted or not

Okay, I know I have a gutter mind, but am I the only person to read this sentence more than once?

And for our next Kitten Board picnic : jam tarts with tortilla!!!

(I'm not sure if this combination would be good for my stomach, but still...)
