It was a she and I am not sure why but I felt it was because maybe being bisexual was trendy in the 80's. It just came across that way, although I am probably wrong.

yes i've just seen it too. i was in shock when she kissed her ex bf's sister! i'm like "whoa, what just happened?" was it a ploy to get the attention of the viewers? it might be. who knows? critics gave it a thumbs down but i was just curious tho' to watch it coz i grew up in the '80s. that Dynasty-slapping bit was the only thing that was pretty ok and the music (MTV! lol) 1984, ahhh my favourite year. cheers and peace!

See, that’s the thing it was a girl, all gimmicky and silly like but cool at the same time ‘cause *hey! She’s bi* and I’m still all weird about it. and yeah the best part was the dynasty shots and the *is my nose bleeding*? somehow i found that hilarious.

It was totally gimmicky. The bisexual girl broke up with her boyfriend to be with his sister, but, the sister is straight. Doesn't matter, bisexuals are just out for what ever they can get right?
The show was kinda funny though. Hehe, good thing I have such high standers!

I haven't seen "That '80s Show" - it's not been shown in Australia yet(well, it wouldn't have if it just premiered in the U.S.). But I do remember the hype that went on when Joseph Gordon Levitt guest starred as a gay teenage boy on "That '70s Show". I didn't see the episode (as I didn't watch the show), but I remember Channel 7 showing the kiss between the 2 boys in the comercial - as they did with the kiss between two women in Ally McBeal.

Perhaps like many other shows, this character is just a publicity gimmick or maybe it's like what Puff said and she's there because it may have been trendy to be bi-sexual in the '80s.

was it trendy in the 80's? i thought it was trendy in the 90's. maybe it was the whole going after the ex's sister (that whole attracted to everyone at the same time mentality) and then coping a field when apologizing? i dunno. i'm bi and it was just off to me.

Hmm, well that sucks to hear...like the gimmickiness of it...I probably won't watch it...But hey...more gay/bi characters on tv are cool I guess...Maybe after a few years of gimmick characters someone may try to do something else with them like oh say portray them as actual people instead of "my sexuality is all there is to me" characters.

at least there is W/T yayness when I think of W/T...all smiles and goodness and cuteness.

The character reminded me of those girls in college who kissed other girls not because they wanted to, but because they could. I never liked those girls, and I have a feeling I'll never watch this show again.

Now Willow and Tara...I bet they want to, can, and LIKE IT.

maybe that's it, i'm spoiled by joss and aly and amber. they've got the real stuff but i cant think of any bigger gimmick than the 80's show. i mean, how original is that? and it's a comedy on fox. what was i thinking? oh, well, i cannot wait for w/t to get back together (i can dream cant i?) and get on with the real deal.

I dunno, it just seemed to me like "oh, we have a gay person to get ratings". Kinda cheesy. Just seemed more trendy and less about any actual sexual attraction. I predict that the girl will be straight ("cured") by the end of this season. Brittany Daniel is kinda hot, though. But she's no Amber

"oh, well, i cannot wait for w/t to get back together (i can dream cant i?) and get on with the real deal."

tis no dream!! they will they will!! okay...maybe i am a wee bit desperate with that but dammit, i love them! one of the main reasons i watch buffy. okay...yeah i'd still watch the show...but holy gaping void batman if there was no w/t!

and this may be sacrilige on some weird level but i'm actually finding myself preferring tara over willow. egads did i just type that for all to see?! eek, please don't hate me kittens...

and that is offtopic...well...on w/t tpic but off that 80's show topic so forgive the digression please.

Sacrelige? Never. A lot of us like both girls equally, but if you happen to have a favourite, that's no big deal.

I kinda like Tara more, too. Especially this season - though Aly's had the better role. quote:

Just an observation here, 'cause I didn't see the show, but it would be kind of weird if they put a bisexual on the show because they thought it was trendy in the 1980's.

Considering that this was the time where AIDS was really beginning to hit the country(with reports coming out, linking it to sex) and sexuality was being attacked more so by the christian right, I find it weird that this would be addressed so flippantly. But, perhaps, they don't care so much because, you know, it's a woman and women who sleep with women can't get AIDS, right? I'm sure that if someone had said in the initial character development, "Let's have a bi-guy or a gay guy", then someone would have brought up AIDS and reminded them that it's a comedy and not to bring in all the drama of that..

Personally, seems like they're selling out. I don't believe that the 1980's were a time of sexual experimentation(I'd put that somewhere at the 60's, part of the 70's and mid to late 90's)--I think they're just taking an aspect that will draw in viewers and adding it to a character, though it's probably completely out of place.

I haven't yet seen the show to judge for myself but even if the intent of the creators was just to add a gimmick to draw viewers, I don't care. Two women kissing is still two women kissing. Sitcoms are filled with attention grabbing storylines for ratings, it's what they survive on. I'd much prefer to see Brittany Daniel kissing another female to kissing Dawson over at the creek.
*looks around*
Not that I watch that show or anything.

But, you have to wonder, who is getting the better end of this deal? The writers because they get their viewers or us because we will take whatever little piece of scraps that the networks will give us? Sure, two women kissing is still two women kissing, but should we celebrate when it seems like it's just exploitation?

And that's the million dollar question. The answer is, there's no definitive answer. That's really something everyone has to decide for themselves. Some people will be completely comfortable with it, some will be out and out supportive, and others will be horribly offended.

And I'm sure there are tons of feelings inbetween that I left out.

It makes for an interesting discussion, though.

Personally, it doesn't bother me. Will I watch the show? No - but that's mostly because it's about the 80's and I don't remember the 80's, nor do I particularly want to.

I'm so use to starving that pieces of scraps, as little as they may be, are alright by me. Now, if they showed two women kissing infront of a room full of guys getting their rocks off, I might change my mind.

I saw this show last night, and I did not particularly like the bisexual girl. As was stated before, it didn't seem like it was right. So I will probably watch the show again, but Sophia will take the position as my least favorite character on the show.

By the way, did anyone else notice that the main characters sister is an awful lot like a blonde Fred after awhile? When she's been talking for awhile her voice takes on that cute tone Fred's always has, and she KIND OF has Fred's face, and she does the adorable little eye-roll when she's all flustered. I noticed that and thought it was funny.

Ooh, ooh! I thought it was just me! The only character I really liked was Katie (the sister), and she definitely has a bit of 'Fred-ness' (no relation to Elliot).

love,

yeah shan that's the question i had. i dont know whether to say yay for us or ok how about some realism here.

but i dont know if i'd watch the show again to see how they develop the character. if she is continued to be played for laughs and all the stereotyping which is what the show is about then i certainly will stop watching.

and yeah the sister looked a bit like fred, except blonde. thought her dancing to pat benatar was cute.

well that came later when sis confessed to bro that his ex gf has the hots for her.

as for whether this bi crumb of a kiss was worth it, i've seen more heat between bert and ernie on sesame st. than this scene. and the boob grab later on was just obscene.

I love the 80's and I almost hop this show doesn't become a hit, otherwise it's going to be trendy to like the 80's and that is soo annoying.
About the bi chick...it didn't bother me at all, and if it was a ratings gimmick they did a bad job of advertising, because in all the promos I saw they said nothing about it, so people who wanted to watch the show did. It was just an added funny bonus. Although I did find it weird, because in the 80's I didn't think it was trendy to be bi, I thought, during that time everyone was freaking because of AIDS and stuff. Oh well. I will watch it again. Probably just for the kewl punk chick. If they were gonna make anyone bi though it should have been her, but thats just my opinion.

buttercup, here in LA and i'm sure NYC they promoted the fact she was bi with the dad's line about not going out with her cause one day he may wake up with two women in the commercials. it was totally promoted here. and i even saw a picture of the kiss on some magazine. so idunno. maybe were you live they went for a different angle

Not that I have seen the show (being an Aussie and all) but as someone who was *gasp* 17 in 1980, I think that the perception of the 80's as being a time of sexual experimentation might depend on what subculture you belonged to during that time. Speaking as someone who was deeply entrenched in the British New Wave/Goth/Punk subculture in Australia, I can say that there was LOTS of sexual experimentation in that subculture. In fact, to not be a bi goth was considered quite odd.....

But maybe we were just randy, eccentric, teenage Aussies?
