It's out!! I just got my copy. I haven't read it yet, Amber's story is called The Innocent, I'll scan later! And did anyone get the regular buffy comic today? It was supposed to be out but they didn't get it.

volume 1? It doesn't have a volume. This is different from the novel. This is the graphic novel.

Yes, we must emphasize this is not the text-only book, this is the graphic novel, essentially a big comic book with different stories.

And, of prime importance, this one has one story written by Amber Benson.

It's too bad they gave both the exact same title, it's rather confusing...

The new Buffy comic #41 Ugly Little Monster Part 2 was on the delivery list for next week.

I also picked up Tales Of The Slayers graphic novel today. Some of those stories though... wow... sad stuff.

Just finished it. Quite a good collection, if very dark. Amber's story is one of the more depressing, in fact, if very well written (but then, it's Amber). The other stories are all interesting, with Joss and Rebecca's standing out particularly. Recommended.

Hey West Coast folks--

I talked to my comic book guy (who's great if you need a good comic place in the SFValley). He said Diamond (that's the comic distributing company) shorted the West Coast shipment of TOS. Next week, he promised. I was bummed, but I guess a week isn't a big deal.

Found the book on amazon.co.uk .. as 'Tales of the Slayer'. A search for 'Tales of the Slayers' turned up nothing, but the photo Amazon have of the cover says 'Tales of the Slayers'. Bizarre, no?

Just finished Tales of the Slayer. I thought it was a great little collection. Loved the Frey piece. A monkey! Woo and a hoo! And Amber's piece was very well done. Very worth the $ and a trip to the comic store.

On a side note - while at the comic store I picked up the cutest buffy pop-out people. So I am weird, but I thought they were hysterical. You can cut out and stand up all the BtVS characters, and the set comes with a little Sunnydale backdrop. On one side it is night and on the other it is day. Too funny. But is it appropriate to set them up on my desk at work...hmm...

By way of a quick over(re)view without spoiling . . .

Really enjoyed this collection. The list of titles and authors is as follows:

Prologue - Joss Whedon
Righteous - Joss Whedon
The Innocent - Amber Benson
Presumption - Jane Espenson
The Glittering World - David Fury
Sonnenblume - Rebecca Rand Kirshner
Nikki Goes Down! - Doug Petrie
Tales - Joss Whedon

Like SeanGaffney said, it is a rather dark collection of stories, but then again, all things considered . . . we're talking about a lineage that only continues when one dies and another takes her place. I found it to be a delightful cross-section of cultures and eras.

Amber's is definitely one of the more depressing stories, as is Joss Whedon's verse piece "Righteous." "The Innocent" is quite good work on Amber's part, if a bit lighter in the text department than some of the others. I really love Jane Espenson's "Presumption," which . . . damn, I don't know what to say about it without giving anything away. "Sonnenblume," by Rebecca Rand Kirshner, adds a bittersweet facet to Slayer history, although I'm really not sure how I feel about Mira Friedmann's stylized artwork in it. David Fury's "The Glittering World" has an interesting concept, though it feels a bit sketchy as far as the characters go. And Doug Petrie's New York in the 70's "Nikki Goes Down!" (if I'm not mistaken, this is the same Nikki whom Spike killed in "Fool For Love") is pretty cool, though I was less emotionally engaged by it than I was by the others.

The whole collection is nicely bookended by short sketches of the first and last Slayers that we know--the Primitive and Melaka Fray. The collection as a whole is just pretty damn cool.

Joss Whedon's Prologue and Epilogue are both excellent. I'm surprised about something, though--we were originally given the impression that the First Slayer was a sort of "hominid". The Prologue implies that she is a modern human, but living apart from other, more civilized humans.

1. "Righteous" - an excellent and tragic evocation of the style of a medieval ballad, very much in the line of "Sir Patrick Spens" or even "Robin Hood" . Good artwork too.

2. "The Innocent" - fine story by Benson, but a little too short for my taste. I would have liked to have learned more about this Slayer. Pity it wasn't written in French with English translations in brackets .

3. "Presumption" - a fabulous imitation of the writing and dialogue style of Jane Austen; perfectly captured the "Regency" flavor.

4. "The Glittering World" - the artwork here is fabulous, but I found the actual story a little hard to follow (did the Slayer win in the end, or not??). Cute appearance by a character from the Buffyverse.

5. "Sonnenblume" - a good story by R.R. Kirshner, but I really didn't care for the "cartoonish" artwork. This kind of thing was done better in the "Maus" books.

6. "Nikki Goes Down" - again, fabulous artwork, but I found the story a little sketchy. I agree that this must be the same Slayer encountered by Spike in "FFL" .

Very much enjoyed the bringing in of Fray at the end. Ties everything up nicely .
