DO NOT POST - Backup in Progress

Beta Readers

Postby Shadowcat » Thu May 31, 2001 6:46 pm

I just got done writing a fic and am dying to post it somewhere. Then I realized that it has nothing to do with Willow or Tara, so I probably couldn't post it here. THEN I wondered who I'd even get to beta read it.

So, here is my proposal! Rather than posting fic right after it's written, how about a few of us volunteer to be beta readers for the board? Who knows, it might turn out better fic. Any one interested? Or not?

Personally, I like to edit things, and I'm pretty good with constructive criticism. I'm offering my services. Just don't spam my mailbox.

I think we tried to set something like this up before. I know for myself, if I need a beta reader, there are several reliable people on the board who I can send fic to.

Perhaps those wanting to beta could sign in here. I have some time coming up soon so I'm available and more than willing to beta for anyone, if they want it.

Other good betas: this is your place to check in with email addys!

Ooh! I'd love to beta-read stuff! Editing is almost more fun than writing. I don't have much experience editing fics, but it can't be that much different than editing English papers. So...flywacket7@aol.com. It's summer, so I have tons of time.

Ahhh, now I can finally put my degree in English to good use(hear that mom?)!

I'd be happy to beta anyone's fic...I'm a decent enought editor and I'm good with constructive criticism. I'm quite good at prodding and cajoling, if an author requires it

Oh, I'd be more than happy to beta-read stuff, if only to be able to read it before it's posted... kidding!

I'm good with the grammar editing and technical stuff, and I can also help with story and theme to a good extent. Find me at: maquis_kalita@yahoo.com

I'll bravely add my name to this list as well. I've paid my dues in the salt mines as both an English teacher and as a writer, but don't let that scare you away. I'm honest but kind and offer only (hopefully) helpful criticism. Plus I have way too much time on my hands.

Tip: Whoever you send your work to, send it as an attached file (.doc, .wri, or .txt) to preserve the formatting.

Beta bump. Writers please read this! There's nothing more off putting than simple mistakes in a fic. Not a warning, just a piece of advice!

Heh, okay, so I normally write horror flick reviews (long story) but I got v. bored at work & wrote a fic. So if there's someone out there who won't laugh at my uselessness too much, I'll send it to them. Or more accurately I'll bottle out of sending it and make my boyfriend hit the "send" button. Anyway, let me know.

Meaning that I'm not as prolific as you are nor am I presently an English teacher. Thus, I've not beta read very much but I can at least try my hand at it.

Add me to the Beta list. : ) I've done a bit of beta in the Buffy-fandom, although most of my work has been in the Harry Potter-fandom. Still, I have a bunch of experience, and I love to help. : ) For those of you writing non-Buffy stuff, I work in a number of different fandoms, too, so just drop me a line!

Writing a lot doesn't mean you're instantly a good beta, heh heh. Neither does being an English teacher. But thanks for the compliment. And the more betas, the uh...more...lol.

Count me in as yet another beta reader...though anyone who gets this far down the list has to br truly desperate. Will read anything but don't expect me to massage any egos (or anything else!) I keep my replies positive but I tell you what I really think. I know that is what is supposed to happen, but I have found that some beta readers don't do anything but wax lyrical about something to avoid confronting the writer with what might be a pleasant truth. If your fragile don't send me your fics to beta...unless of course they are marvellous anyway. If you can stand some constructive comments then feel free.
