Vanquished - A poem

Postby Willowmere » Sun Jun 24, 2001 11:14 am

Since the fall of last year, I've been writing Buffy-related poetry. Some have centered on a specific character, other are about events. This is the poem that corresponds to "Tough Love".

Vanquished

When I pull back the curtain of your gilded hair
like peeling away the centuries
I see the library
at Alexandria
burned
The golden goblets of Inca kings
weeping their forms into Spanish ovens

I see the temple of my learning
in rubble
The ragged feathered shaman
wandering the pillaged streets
Proclaiming to the burnished Conquistadores
that the Emperor has no clothes

Wow. All I can say is truly great poem. I haven't even seen that episode yet, just read about it, but the poem brings forth strong mental images and has a lot of emotion building language.

Like to say you are a wonderful poet and hope to read more soon.

"Liberate tutemet es inferis"

"I am you know... yours"

"I think i'm kinda gay"

"In all my travels throughout the universe I have battled against evil; against power mad conspirators. Ha, I should have stayed here;the oldest civilisation, decadent, degenerate and rotten to the core! Hah! Power mad conspirators, daleks, sontarans, Cybermen... They're still in the nursery compared to us. Ten million years of absolute power; that's what it takes to be really corrupt!"

You based a lot of your imagery in classicism, which brings forward the idea of ancient texts and/or civilisations. Can I ask what gave you your inspiration for that? I'm always interested in what drives a writer to include the detail or themes that they do.

Well, I must admit I was influenced by the book Along The Inca Road, which I was reading when I wrote the poem.
I like the way you mentioned "ancient texts". They are such prominent figures in BtVS, that I wanted to conjure up the same imagery. I'll post another poem and you can see another way I used a particular "style" to tie my poems into the show.

Edited to fix my g.d. coding, which sucks worse than an undead Dirt Devil.
