The more pleasant side effects of caffeine (fic)

Postby willow's girl » Mon Feb 18, 2002 10:52 pm

Description: The combined Willow/Tara snippets from some Xander/Buffy fics I'm writing. And yes, it is JUST the Willow/Tara parts. Let me know if they make sense out of context
Disclaimer: The characters from Buffy are not mine, sadly. They belong to the good people at Fox, the WB, UPN and of course the God of all things Buffy, Joss Whedon.
Spoilers: Season six through Doublemeat Palace.
Rating: PG-13

The Encounter:
Willow answered the door, expecting to see anyone but her once lover.
“Oh, hi Tara,” she said, nervously fiddling with the laces of her blue velvet, lace up top. “I thought you weren’t gonna be able to make it tonight.”
“Wicca group was canceled tonight, so I thought I’d see if Dawn still wanted to catch that movie.”
“Dawn, Tara’ here!” Willow yelled up the stairs.
“Be down in a minute!” Dawn yelled back.
“She’ll be down in a minute,” Willow told her, “but you probably already knew that. Come on in. I’m sorry, if I’d have know I wouldn’t have . . .”
“It’s ok Will,” Tara told her. “You don’t have to avoid me just because we’re . . .”
Willow impatiently awaited the rest of her sentence. We’re Tara to say “over” it would mean absolute hopelessness. “Broken up,” meant a faint trace of hope and “on a break” would imply the possibility of reconciliation.
“N-not together,” Tara finished.
Well, thought Willow, still a little hope.
“It’s just hard, seeing you and not being able to . . .”
“I know, it is for me too Willow. Just because it’s hard, doesn’t mean it’s bad.”
“Does that mean that maybe we could, you know, see each other on purpose sometime?” Willow asked.
Tara’s frowned. “Willow, it’s too soon. I don’t know about trying to date again.”
“No, not a date. Just . . . talking. I’ve felt so lost without you in my life. I miss you.”
Tara smiled sadly. “I miss you too.”
“I know I don’t deserve your friendship. The things I did to you -- you have no reason to trust me. But if you could just let me try to make it up to you—“
“How about coffee?”
“Coffee?”
“You know, Starbucks or something. Fancy, over-priced beverages. No romance, no magic, just caffeine.”
Willow beamed, a huge smile on her face. “Oh that sounds wonderful!” She gave Tara a huge hug, before she even realized what she was doing. She started to pull away, but to her surprise Tara returned the hug.
“I-I’ll call you,” Tara said.
“Ok,” Willow replied.
Dawn and Tara left to see the movie. Willow sat at home, replaying the conversation with Tara over and over in her mind.
“I can’t stand it anymore,” she said, “I need a fix.” The abstention from magic combined with the lack of snuggles was killing her. She went to the fridge and pulled out a carton of Ben and Jerry’s.
“Arrrggg!” she screamed. It was empty. Buffy must have finished it off after patrolling. Well, there was no helping it. This was an emergency. She grabbed her purse and headed to the store.
Just Talking:
Willow and Tara were talking over iced mochachinos.
“How good. I’ve been a little stressed with homework. You know, it was so much easier to mix academics with stopping evil in high school. Or maybe you wouldn’t know. I mean, you didn’t really start fighting evil until college, unless you did and I didn’t know about it in which case . . . I’m babbling, aren’t I?”
Tara smiled and nodded, taking a sip of her drink.
“Hey, you got a little something,” Willow said, rubbing a bit of foam away from Tara’s beautiful lips with her fingers.
“Willow, are you ok?” Tara asked, suddenly concerned. “Your hand, it’s shaking.”
“Fine, fine. Just jittery. My heart’s beating all brrrrrr,” she said, making a sound like a drum roll.
“Me too. Must be all the caffeine,” Tara told her, with a wink.
She’s flirting with me, Willow thought. Oh goddess, I’m not sure don’t know if I’m strong enough for this yet! More then ever she longed make Tara float.
“Yeah. Bad coffee,” she scolded her drink, “making me all jumpy!”
That got a laugh from Tara. “Next time, we’ll have to get decaf.”
Next time? Tara had said next time!
“Most definitely,” Willow agreed. “So, how’s school been for you?”
Later:
Willow and Tara were at Buffy's sitting ang laughing at a bad B movie.
Willow could stand it no longer. She leaned in and kissed Tara. Moments later she pulled away, horrified at herself. She’d ruined everything. Now Tara would never be able to stay friends with her.
“I’m sorry Tara,” Willow said, “I shouldn’t have-“
“I’m not sorry,” Tara told her, swooping in for another kiss.
Willow discovered the meaning of bliss. Bliss: a reconciliatory kiss with the woman of your dreams after an agonizing two month separation.
Buffy and Xander walked in, hand in hand.
“Whoa guys, get a room,” Xander quipped.
“Buffy gave him a light kick in the shin to quiet him. “Look, we can leave and come back later if you want.”
“No need,” Tara replied, “I like Xander’s suggestion.”
Willow’s eyes lit up. “You vixen! Um Xander, Buffy see you both later.”
“Much later,” Tara added. The two girls raced each other to Willow’s room.
“Well, that’ good.” Buffy smiled. “Willow’s been so miserable lately. It’s good to see the two of them back together. I mean they are back together, don’t you think?”
“Oh Goddess, Tara!” they heard Willow cry out.
“Yeah, I think you could say that,” Xander replied.
“Willow, Willow, Willow!”
“Whadda you say we go chat elsewhere?” Buffy asked.
“Yeah, that’s be a good idea,” Xander answered.

It seemed interesting, but try adding a little more description between sentances. It gets a little confusing who was saying what and all that, all in all it was good.

I think I have seen someone else say they were posting just the Willow/Tara part of a longer story, why not just post the whole thing? I would think, and others can correct me, that if W/T are featured fairly prominently in the story that the whole thing should be ok, right?

In any case you did a good job with the pair talking and interacting and cut away at a good time, when more would have probably just been too mundane. You have some word choice problems in a couple spots and a few awkward sentences, but otherwise things read smoothly. The end seems a bit sudden on the other hand.

It's nice to see some more hopeful pieces. You should do more.
