It's the Name Game Tuesday MKF

Postby WiccansIllusion » Mon Aug 19, 2002 7:29 pm

Ok so, AOL has a name origin thing up, so I punch in Tara's and Willow's, of course and this is what I found on the origin..
tara

Tara, a 2-syllable girl's name of Gaelic origin, means: A hill; a rocky tower; crag.

Willow, a 2-syllable girl's name of Old English origin, means: Of the willow tree; graceful.

I think it's interesting, that Tara in a sense means Earth, and Willow is a tree, who's roots go into the Earth, and etc. Do you think Joss did this on purpose? Making it even more symbollic that they are intwined with one another?

At any rate the question of the day, what do you think Willow and Tara would name their children, if they had any?

Hmm don't know about them, but I know what girl's name I always liked: Brooke. And even Brooke Shields did not ruin it for me, but she tries, oh yes, she tries.

I don't know if the tree/earth symbolism in their names was intentional or not, but it has certainly been noticed. There was a wonderful quote a while back that was being used as a sig line (I don't remember where it came from- anyone who knows I'd love to be reminded) that went something like:

[i:d4d60584dc] Willow is a tree that weeps, but Tara is firmer and will stand. [/i:d4d60584dc]

As for what they'd name their children, I have no idea. Alexis Dawn comes to mind.

They'd pick an old Gaelic name - I'm sure of it. Something like Saoirse, Aoife or Grinne.

My name (Marion) apparently is Hebrew in origin and the biblical meaning is "dew of the sea" - whatever that's supposed to mean. My mother picked it because she didn't want to call me Mary, as both my grandmothers were Mary, (it was kind of traditional to name the first born after your mother) but Marion was a derivation of Mary, so it was a compromise.

Going with the Gaelic, since I see Tara being mommy and claiming more say in what they name their sproglets, and being biased, I'd have to go with Welsh names. Something like Cerys, which means 'to love', or Elen, 'the light', or Rhiannon who was a legendary queen. She liked birds, I think. That's about as far as my memory stretches. And for boys, maybe Dylan ('the ocean') or Owen, cos that's my brother's name :)

Right, its coffee time. Have a great day, kitties!

I don't think Josh would've been clever enough to have chosen the names Willow and Tara for their deeper meaning...call me crazy, but I just don't.

I think if W/T had a girl, they would name her something very regal or urbane...I really like Tatiana, or Tatum (which means "cheerful"). For a boy, I think they might go with an Aaron ("enlightened") or Ethan ("firm, strong").

Personally, I like the name Termagent for a girl, and Bonzo for a boy. :)

I keep trying to convince my wife of the benefits of the name "Spud." It is its own contraction. It's easy to remember. It's easy to yell: "Spu-ud, stop that spinning around!" It will work for either a boy or a girl. It refers to potatoes, which I love. So far, unsuccessful.

W/T and baby names? Perhaps they might use Sara (princess) or Aaron (enlightened). Going with more of the Jewish tradition.

As for Joss, I do not think he thought that deeply about it. Tara was originally only going to be around for a short time. Anything else I might say belongs in the rant thread...

Reason I think Joss does think carefully about his characters names - Joss named himself. His real name is Joe and in college he renamed himself Joss because it meant "lucky".

I for one totally agree that Joss purposefully chose their names. Willow being a tree and Tara been a tree goddes....Tara rooting Willow to the Earth, etc, etc.

As for names...I'm just clueless...Can't think of anything right now...

And as a funny end note, I typed in "Buffy" and it said this name does not exist.

I'm pretty sure I heard or read a Joss quote to the extent that he picked "Willow" because it sounded vulnerable.

I'm not sure what names W/T would pick for their kids, but I'm most perturbed to report that pretty much all of the names I've always wanted to give to my own kids-to-be have already been taken by friends/family who've beaten me to the chase, most recently "Annabelle" who was named only this past Thursday. *shakes her fists at a girl who loves cheese*

Julia, I can completely sympathise. My brother has four kids and my sister five, and between them they seem to have cornered the market in cool names.

Damn over-achieving siblings.

Ok, I have two beautiful children (aren't all mothers supposed to say that?) I had their names picked out long before I became pregnant with them. My daughter who was actually a twin (the second baby never developed and we don't know the sex) is named Meghan Lyn and my son is Kyle Stephen.

I'm thinking that W/T might go for names like Emily or Paige for a girl maybe even Molly. And Tyler, Trevor and I'm kind of liking Avery for a boy. I don't know why. Too much Murphy Brown I guess.

With Love,
Barb

Hmm I'm not sure about this. My gf's full name is

Julia - soft haired, youthful (beautiful blonde hair)
Michael - Who is like god (she definitely is to me!)

OK very good so far so I try my name:

Melissa - A honey bee (What?)
Spencer - Administrator (What, me?)

So, obviously we were meant to be together is the way I'm reading this!

Missy

Tara/Willow names hmmm Sophia or Angus
