Good article, I like the Joss Whedon quotes you have used. It sums up his lies, arrogance and ignorance rather nicely. Especially that first quote where he says that not killing her because she is gay offends him as much as killing her because she is gay. That never ceases to piss me off. He is basically saying that he thinks positive discrimination (eh that is the Dutch term for it) is as bad as homophobia. Nice and easy if you don't have to worry about being treated equally and [b:b08fc94348] so very nice[/b:b08fc94348] to compare the idea of wanting people who have been discriminated against for years to get a chance to catch up before true equality can begin to homophobia. In any case as far as I know none of us asked him not to kill Tara because she is gay, but then we also did not ask him to lie to our faces about not killing her, thereby giving us a false sense of security and hope. He did that all on his own.

All of that aside the why of killing Tara is irrelevant. It does not change the fact that WT became yet another cliche. You have summed up the facts beautifully, and what disturbing facts they are.

Yep, we call it positive discrimination as well Garfield. Kind of a contradictory term I suppose, but there you go.

Kind of a lot. I wonder whether some people do not like the idea behind it because of the word used for it, or maybe it is that now those who had all the privileges for so long are faced with the possibility of being 'discriminated' for not being a member of a minority group. No need to stand up against discrimination as long as it does not affect you right? It would be so much more consistent if people who protest the idea of positive discrimination also opened their mouths about existing discrimination, but nah, why should they if that does not affect them. Bleh.
End of babblefest.

Good article. :grin

That Joss quote annoys me as well. In the States, I think "positive discrimination" is colloquially called "reverse discrimination," as in "reverse racism." I got into quite a few discussions about it in college.

Great article, again.

June, I've come to accept that Joss is pretty much a moron. I mean, look at how he's letting Buffy go down the drain... not too cleaver.
