Doyle in the cult TV show 'Angel'
Glenn Martin Christopher Francis Quinn, actor: born Dublin 28 May 1970; died North Hollywood, California 3 December 2002.
Although he hailed from Ireland, Glenn Quinn found success as an actor in his adopted homeland of the United States. He reached international television audiences as Mark Healy, the dimwitted husband of Becky Conner, in the sitcom Roseanne and co-starred as the half-demon Doyle in Angel, a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Born in Dublin in 1970, Quinn was brought up in Cabinteely, on Ireland's east coast, educated at Clonkeen College, Blackrock, and played drums and guitar with local rock bands before moving to the United States with his mother and two sisters at the age of 18.
He landed the role of a pool shark in the video for Richard Marx's No 1 single "Satisfied", played a disc-jockey in the pilot episode of the teen television series Beverly Hills 90210 (1990) and made his feature film dbut as a drummer in the rock-and-romance musical Shout (1991, starring John Travolta), in which he shared a screen kiss with Gwyneth Paltrow.
By the time the film was released, Quinn had been cast as Mark Healy in the third series of Roseanne (1990-97), the sitcom starring Roseanne Barr and John Goodman as parents bringing up a working-class family in Illinois. Mark was the biker boyfriend of their elder daughter, Becky, and eventually married her.
In between shooting on the programme, Quinn travelled to Britain to film the medieval fantasy series Covington Cross (1992), in which he played Cedric, the sensitive son of the English Grey clan.
After years of having to speak in an American accent, Quinn was cast as an Irish character, Allan Francis Doyle, in the first series of Angel (1999), which starred David Boreanaz in the title role of a vampire who had previously appeared in the cult television hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer and now had the chance to redeem himself in the City of Angels. As Doyle, Quinn was a do-gooding semi-demon who advised Angel and ultimately sacrificed his own life for him. Of the chance to use his native accent on screen for the first time, Quinn said: "I've been hiding it for so long that it's amazing to have some freedom. It was like putting on an old pair of shoes it's bringing my soul back to life."
The joint owner of Goldfingers, a James Bond-themed nightclub in Santa Monica, the actor performed with rock bands in Los Angeles clubs and appeared in the films Dr Giggles (1992), Live Nude Girls (1995), Some Girl (1998) and R.S.V.P. (2002).
