RIP Glenn Quinn...Doyle on Angel

Postby themagicpixie » Sat Dec 07, 2002 10:51 am

This is so sad. When I first saw Doyle on "Angel" I thought: is that Becky's husband from "Roseanne"? It looks really like him... Then I thought: no, it can't be - he's Irish, and the character is so different! Sounds stupid but he was so convincing as Mark on "Roseanne", I thought that was really all his range was - to play happy-go-lucky, well-meaning but not too bright... but he was great on Angel, funny and convincing, and I hated it when he was killed off. It's really sad news that someone so young, and talented, has died.

Rest In Peace.

Glenn Quinn of "Roseanne" dies of possible overdose, police say
12/07/2002 12:00 AM

Found dead at friend's home
Glenn Quinn, 32, best known for his recurring role on the sitcom "Roseanne" and a former co-star of the supernatural drama "Angel," died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 2002) in North Hollywood.

Mr. Quinn, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, was found dead from a possible drug overdose at a friend's home, Los Angeles police said Friday. Detectives said the case will remain open pending the completion of toxicology tests, but no foul play was suspected.

Mr. Quinn joined the cast of "Roseanne" in its third season, playing Becky Connor's not-so-bright, yet-sincere boy- [JU]friend and then husband, Mark, from 1990 to 1997.

He also co-starred as the half-demon Doyle on "Angel," a spinoff of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," during its 1999 premiere season.

Above posters are right that Glenn Quinn's death isn't reported on BBC News Online. However it is on the BBC's Buffy webpages in their "Cult" section, here:

Yep, it was rumored that he was sacked from AtS because of his drug addiction... Whatever else you might say of M.E., the AtS producers did their best to cover that up and take the heat for Doyle's death.

Of course, David Fury later posted at the Bronze (with his usual tact) that it'd been an "actor problem."

Either way, it's a real shame. :(

Doyle was always my favorite character on 'Angel', next to Angel of course. But it's a real shame about Glenn Quinn.

Kudos!!!

I knew that one article mentioned the possibility of overdose, but I hadn't read anything about the police confirming it. That's why I was asking for the link. So far it's still just a theory, correct?

ETA: Drusilla Lover, I don't think they had ever planned to bring him back. Glenn Quinn had moved on to new projects. There was one episode in Season 3, "Birthday", where they showed old footage of him from Season 1. But no, he wasn't going to make any new appearances.

I thought it might have been drugs.

That is really too bad. I mean death is always a sad thing, but to have it cut short because of something like this.

I have had to haul my stupid-ass friends more than once to the hospital because of some overdose. Let me just say watching someone puke up blood is enough to sober you up real damn fast.

I hope that some one see's his story and gets a clue.

I feel sad for Glenn Quinn and his family though I really don't know who he was. But I remembered how good he was with his role in 'Roseanne' despite the fact that I only saw a couple of episodes. It's especially shocking how young he was, just another bright star going back to the sky. It remains me of the death of Kevin Smith(Ares in 'Xena') and he was only about 37 years old at that time. I will pray for his soul and wish peace for his family.

Sincerely,
Strongwoman66

This is from www.glenn-quinn.com:

Hello,

I was a very close friend and former co-worker of Glenn and would like to ask for your help in spreading the word about his memorial fund. As you may know funerals are very expensive and his family has been left with a considerable bill following Glenn's funeral. We as his friends have established a memorial fund in the hopes of lightening the financial burden on his family. To lose Glenn is a tremendous tragedy and for his family to be forced to deal with financial hardships on top of the emotional ones they are already facing is horrific. It is for that reason that I ask you to help spread the word and contact information for Glenn's family. The memorial fund is call...The Glenn Quinn Memorial Fund and all donations should be sent to:

The Glenn Quinn Memorial Fund
Care Of Mary Quigley
12049 Valleyheart Dr.
Studio City CA, 91604

Please help us, Glenn's friends help his family by relaying this information to as many people as possible. Any donation would help. A few dollars from many people adds up quickly and would go a long way towards lifting the family's financial hardships.

Michael Fishman

Sorry, I know that this is maybe not the appropiate place to get very angry, but I can't help to do so. I'm reading too much on the S7 board, I guess. Words like "friends for life", "tight knitted", "S8 contract offer" and "Variety" come to my mind and a pattern emerges. I hate that pattern.

From The Independent on 18 Dec.
[quote:489156ccbf]Quote:
Glenn Quinn
Doyle in the cult TV show 'Angel'

Glenn Martin Christopher Francis Quinn, actor: born Dublin 28 May 1970; died North Hollywood, California 3 December 2002.

Although he hailed from Ireland, Glenn Quinn found success as an actor in his adopted homeland of the United States. He reached international television audiences as Mark Healy, the dimwitted husband of Becky Conner, in the sitcom Roseanne and co-starred as the half-demon Doyle in Angel, a spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Born in Dublin in 1970, Quinn was brought up in Cabinteely, on Ireland's east coast, educated at Clonkeen College, Blackrock, and played drums and guitar with local rock bands before moving to the United States with his mother and two sisters at the age of 18.

He landed the role of a pool shark in the video for Richard Marx's No 1 single "Satisfied", played a disc-jockey in the pilot episode of the teen television series Beverly Hills 90210 (1990) and made his feature film dbut as a drummer in the rock-and-romance musical Shout (1991, starring John Travolta), in which he shared a screen kiss with Gwyneth Paltrow.

By the time the film was released, Quinn had been cast as Mark Healy in the third series of Roseanne (1990-97), the sitcom starring Roseanne Barr and John Goodman as parents bringing up a working-class family in Illinois. Mark was the biker boyfriend of their elder daughter, Becky, and eventually married her.

In between shooting on the programme, Quinn travelled to Britain to film the medieval fantasy series Covington Cross (1992), in which he played Cedric, the sensitive son of the English Grey clan.

After years of having to speak in an American accent, Quinn was cast as an Irish character, Allan Francis Doyle, in the first series of Angel (1999), which starred David Boreanaz in the title role of a vampire who had previously appeared in the cult television hit Buffy the Vampire Slayer and now had the chance to redeem himself in the City of Angels. As Doyle, Quinn was a do-gooding semi-demon who advised Angel and ultimately sacrificed his own life for him. Of the chance to use his native accent on screen for the first time, Quinn said: "I've been hiding it for so long that it's amazing to have some freedom. It was like putting on an old pair of shoes it's bringing my soul back to life."

The joint owner of Goldfingers, a James Bond-themed nightclub in Santa Monica, the actor performed with rock bands in Los Angeles clubs and appeared in the films Dr Giggles (1992), Live Nude Girls (1995), Some Girl (1998) and R.S.V.P. (2002).
