It's Reasons to Skip Football Weekend, MKF 10/5-10/6

Postby BoredNow99 » Sat Oct 05, 2002 3:37 am

Okay, so I was harassed and harangued into starting a weekend thread. Therefore, I accept no blame for this topic :)

I have a very football-minded family. It borders on obsession. So when the days come along that I can't actually attend the match, for whatever reason, I have to think of a bloody good excuse why not.

Of course, I could say I needed to stop the end of the world with a yellow crayon and it still wouldn't wash with my parents.

So anyway, for the sport-minded Kittens - what would stop you attending the big match? What would tear you away?

For the non-sport minded...what's your best ever excuse for getting out of something you didn't want to do.

And what would Willow and Tara's be?

Have a good weekend Kittens, wherever you may be :)

Putting myself in the non-sports minded camp for this one.

Best excuse ever....that's a tough one. See, I'm not that good at making up excuses, so I usually just lie, but I'm not a very good liar, either, and I almost always get caught.

But this is shamefully bad...I once called up my grandmother and told her I couldn't come to her birthday party because my car wouldn't start.

And then another time, I was visiting her, and I had tried very hard to make sure we would have an activity for our time together, which was making bread, but then she went and made it all before I got there, so we had nothing to do but sit around and look at each other. So I told her I had to leave early because my glasses prescription was wearing out and I needed to get home before dark so that I could still see.

Oh, the shame. My own grandmother.

Hmm my excuse for anything and everything is always, "I'm sick". From a colf/flu to throwing up and delirious depending on what I'm trying to get out of. However after using it a million times I'm thinking I'm going to have to be dying next time I want to use it.
There's also the extrmely helpfull coincidence that it's someone's birthday on that day!
However in my family there is always the timeless way of playing each other off each other, eg - parents said no, I'm doing something with my parents/I'm doing something with my brother (which my family then does likewise). But when applying this use carefully :lol There have been many times that I've used them and then been caught out because I didn't actually *tell* the person I'd said I was "supposedly" doing something with them.

Thankfully my family couldn't care less whether *I* watch the football, if I don't get in the way of *their* watching the football!

Hmm WIllow and Tara are known to be terrible liers so they'd probably end up bumbling and stuttering something out like, Willow: We uh have s-something, uh -
Tara: Something very important -
Willow: Yeah it's very important that we do this-
Tara: Last minute, important *something*!
Then blush and stare at the suddenly extremely intereting floor and leave/hang up.

um, do you mean american football or football like soccer football?
anyway, um i'm usually really good at getting out of stuff. i don't lie though, so i either come up with something vague, but still true and get myself out of it, or come up with waaaaaay too elaborate logic as to why i shouldnt have to do whatever it is anyway. well, thats just with my familiy usually.
if i'm supposed to do something with people i actually like and want to get out of it, theyd probably understand and not mind of be offended if i just said "i dont feel like it. catch ya later".
i think, depending on their mood, w/t would either do exactly what you said kismic, like in OMWF, or if whatever they wanted to scurry off and do instead was less romantically minded, willow would start off willowbabbley and not very convincing, but that would give tara minute to think of some much better beleiveable excuse and then she'd swoop in and explain away, and off theyd go.
that's what i think.
and yay! yummy weekendness!
peace out.

Um, since this is sports weekend extravaganza and this will be one of my very few post so I will take up the pro sports end. Today I will be attending the Giants Braves playoff game at PacBell Park, this is a best of 5 divsional series that is tied up at 1 game a piece.

I have the very unique problem tomorrow, that is the annual Assault on Candlestick Park by my Rams fans mailing list. Folks come from all over, as far away as Scottland to attend this event. Problem is, if the Yankees don't lose their game today, the Giants Braves matchup for tomorrow will start at the same time as the Rams Whiners game.

So, as to the question what would tear me away from the big game, the answer is a Bigger Game. If the Giants game starts at 1pm tomorrow, I will be forced to choose between my Giants and Rams. So while my Rams are having their fair share of problems this year, its the niners, their biggest rivals. I was harrassed mercilessly as a child by all my niner loving relatives, for being a Rams fan. Currently the Rams have defeated the Niners in 6 consecutive games, and it would be nice to keep that streak alive. A lot of of Rams fans are of the opinion, that even if the team only went 2-14 this year, let those two wins be against the Niners.

So there you have, for what it's worth I will try and attend as much of both games as possible. Anyway, enough sports, I need to pack and get to the ballpark. Happy weekend Kittens.

I haven't really come up with any good excuses to avoid football (and here I mean the american kind) games. But, I've come up with behavior that gets me invited (read: dragged along because my mom couldn't find anyone else to go with her), mainly, bringing my knitting along. That got her embarrassed enough. And then, the time after that when she attempted to make me go, she caught me with my knitting and made me leave it at home, but I managed to sneak a book under my shirt. I haven't been to a football game since.

So there it is: embarrass them at a game, and they probably won't try to take you again.

I can't think of anything that would stop me from watching The Villa play.....well except for it being way too expensive and not living in Birmingham anymore.

I once had to think up an on the spot excuse for not wearing my school uniform on the first day back after the summer holidays... Having decided I was now too old for uniform and was just NOT going to wear it..after all I'm an individual.......a rebel...and it was time to stand up against oppression....

Summoned before the Headmistress (and this was when you could still get the cane so it was a bit scary)...I told her I was so proud of going to the school that I took my school uniform away with me on holiday to impress everyone I met and I hadn't had time to wash it before school started again.

She thought it was such a mad excuse to come up with that all I got was detention and an essay to write on the value of wearing a school uniform....

I was such a rebel!!

Seriously, though, it's become such a duty I feel immense guilt if I'm not there. So to answer my own question - friends keep me away. And that's about it :)

When I was at school, I used to be in the (field) hockey team...
And my home town team...
And the county team...
And had England training and trials...
Until one day, I realised I had no life left except school and hockey, so feeling kind of p*ssed off, I went round to my reprobate-of-a-friend's house and got plastered, despite having a match the next day.
In our drunken stupour, we put the world to rights, and decided I'd tell them where to stick that hockey ball, but how to get out of tommorrow's match?
No excuse seemed convincing enough, so I decided to think of something in the morning, but on my way home, while staggering around a dark field taking a short cut, I put my foot in a hole, and turned my ankle, which made a horrible crunching noise.
After limping home, i was rushed to A+E, given a pair of crutches and told I'd torn the ligaments and tendons. and I'd be off my ankle for a year.

And the moral of this story is...
"Be careful watch you wish for!" ;-)

:shock I would >never< want to skip football weekend! Why oh why for the love of God and all things holy would I want to miss my boys knock the snot out of the dolts from San Diego?

And I have to agree about our girls being closeted hockey fans. In fact, I'm quite certain that the only male's picture to ever grace the inside of their school lockers was that of Peter Forsberg. :sh

As for what our girls would do to get out of doing something they didn't want to do . . . gee . . . I dunno . . . maybe offer to go home and look something up in some volumes back at the house that deal with mystical chants, bacchanals . . . ;)

And, I kind of think Tara is a secret Broncos lover and would never miss one of their games either. Cuz, y'know..."HORSIES!" Which, roughly translated, of course means: GO BRONCOS!! :grin

Well, normally I only need to watch the first 4 minutes of a Lions game to convince me to skip it. :) Although, I hestitantly put forth that QB Joey Harrington may be for real and I may have to nurse my loyalty back to health in time for next season.

Hockey is another story. I live for hockey. Nothing can stop me from watching an important Red Wings game. Not even sex. On more than one occasion in the playoffs, I've had to root my head out from under the covers because I heard the TV announcer say, "Fedorov in on a breakaway. He passes to Datsyuk. Back to Fedorov in the slot. He shoots he sccCOOOORRRREEESSSS!" Thank god my dear gf is also a hockey fan, so she forgives me. We usually have the good sense not to get frisky during a big hockey game anyway.

I also agree that Willow and Tara are probably closet hockey fans. Although, [b:54408bba9a] Relativegirl[/b:54408bba9a], I believe the picture in Willow and Tara's locker is of Steve Yzerman, not a certain spleenless Swede you mentioned. Steve is just a nicer guy and he's won more Stanley Cups. And, hell, if you're going to bother putting a picture of a [i:54408bba9a] guy[/i:54408bba9a] in your locker, go with the one with more hardware, ya know? ;)

I actually don't go to matches very often, I prefer to watch them at home, so the general populace don't have to be exposed to my really bad language and shouting fits. I get uncharacteristically violent when watching sports.

My usual excuse is work, because everyone knows civil servants work really hard. [b:dc8af3c729]Is that laughter I hear?[/b:dc8af3c729] [img:dc8af3c729]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/winkgreen.gif[/img:dc8af3c729]

So, my beloved footie gets mention. After 7 defeats on the trot, I can report this arvo's game resulted in Woking FC finally getting a point in a 2-2 draw. That combined with the board being back means my weekend has improved considerably.

As to what would make me miss a game, that's tough - I did once miss a cup semi final to go a cousin's wedding (thankfully no one noticed me with a radio plugged into my ear during the ceremony)

And I managed to schedule my hols next Feb so that I can get to Vegas, see a bit of California, and still only miss one game

Gonna stop going on about football no, coz Tommo'll get mad.

Willow could never be a fan of swimming - the sight of Xander in speedos would be enough to put anyone off for life :wink

Ah sports! Being such a sports fanatic I don't think very much would stop me from attending (or at least watching a game on tv). The only time I tried an excuse to not go to a game was a Giants football game (my family are big fans, I on the other hand can't stand the team, I am a Colts fan all the way), and my family was taking a particular group of people I just can't stomach. So the thought of having to suffer watching a team I wouldn't be rooting for, with the added dread of who I was going to be surrounded with, I decided I had a pounding migraine headache (and only bed rest would make me well). So they went to the game, I of course had a miraculous recovery ;) , and watched my Colts on Direct TV.

I am actually going to miss two Bronco games this season (away games of course I would not miss watching a home game) because of a trip to Europe. But even then if I can find Bronco news I will - or I will find an internet cafe and read the Denver Post sports page at least..

Nothing would stop me from, watching a Man United, game.

My girlfriend on the other hand, can't stand football:( So she's always coming up with excuses, why I shouldn't watch, especially if it's on the telly.

I can remember on one occasion when Man United, had a big champions League, game, which was being show live on telly. I arrived home from work to be informed, by my girlfriend, that the T.V wasn't working. I took a look and nothing, it just wouldn't switch on. Well of course, I was really disapointed, as it was really a big game. So I decided that I would go down to the pub to watch it.

I went upstairs to change and when I came back down stairs the TV was miraculously working again. My girlfriend sheepishly informed me that she had removed the fuse from the plug, because she didn't want to watch this "rubbish". But, she didn't want me to go out either, so she put the fuse back in.

I had to laugh, she hasn't done this again, thankfully and she has slowly come to terms with my Man Utd obession.

Well I'm on the PRO side of this coin.

I spent three hours driving to a Packer game last sunday. We left at 6am so we could put up a tent for tailgaiting. What an awesome experience. We provide the tent so we keep getting the invite. Packer tickets are impossible to get. :grin Then we sat in bumper to bumper traffic for four hours getting home. :( They won so I didn't mind much. GO PACK!

I do have to agree with Molly though, being at the stadium forces you to listen to ALOT of profanity. And I miss the instant replay.

I do love the idea that Tara might secretly have a Hockey obsession. I can just see her charging the glass watching the action. I'm thinking Willow might go just for the Tara entertainment :wink

See, I live in an SEC football town, where that's ALL you do on Saturdays in the fall.

Last week I worked for ESPN's broadcast of the Auburn vs. Syracuse game. It was my first time on the field, and it was many Orangemen fans' first time on "the Plains."

Just as important as the game itself (if not moreso) is the tailgating here, though. See below for Bud Poliquin's (of the Syracuse Post-Standard) comments on tailgating in Auburn:

[quote:5bf26f402f][b:5bf26f402f][i:5bf26f402f]Quote:[/i:5bf26f402f][/b:5bf26f402f]
I have descended into college football's Grand Canyon. I have stood in its Alps. I have gazed at its ocean sunset. I have done all of these things and I've been changed forever.
I knew, of course, that we were different up here.

I understood that autumn Saturdays in our burg have never been given over to any kind of serious sporting fervor. I've accepted for a good, long while that a fair amount of our citizens regularly choose to pick apples or seal driveways rather than head to the Carrier Dome to watch the Syracuse University Orangemen at play.

But, Lord have mercy on our college football souls, I've come to realize we're not merely quirky in these parts. And we're not just overly particular. No, having attended a game in Auburn, Ala. - which is like going to Mass in Rome - I'm convinced that, by comparison, we're as dead as the flying wedge.
[/quote:5bf26f402f]

Y'see, excuses become irrelevant here in Auburn. It becomes part of who you are, despite excusable protests. So I just go with the flow around here ... and it works out because I get free grub and beer!

As for Tara and hockey, I can't really see it, but I'd love to imagine it. The mere thought of Tara pounding the penalty box glass and taunting opposing players tickles me pink.

And with regards to excuses, I think the Maroonrafer report speaks for itself.

[b:6342fc278e] Ann-Marie[/b:6342fc278e]: ManU... I will always be thankful, because they gave me the two best minutes in my life as a football fan. I'm from Germany - and I'm a HUGE hater of Bayern Munich, so you know what I mean. :)

Talking about the Champions League and Bayern Munich: That will be a problem for German football fans who are also fans of the show we don't talk about. On Oct, 23rd it's AC Milan vs. Bayern - and it's Bayern's very last chance to survive. At the same time, on another channel, it's OMWF.

I'm not very happy with this, because I still have the unrealistic hope that we don't get to the second half of season sux here, due to ratings. And OMWF in itself is a shure ratings killer. If they show a dubbed version, it will piss off one half of the audience, if they going to air it with subtitles, it will piss off the other half (we don't like subtitles over here).

And there's really no reason to skip football. You won't get this old dog away from the tv screen when there's a big match on it - no way. Has been tried (everything, corruption, violence, sex), never worked. ;)

Ann-Marie: great story. Trying to watch united has caused me SO many problems. One champs league game (to my shame, I can't remember which) was on Valentine's Day. I refused to go out for a nice romantic meal, and made my 'valentine' stay in and watch the game. That relationship did not last too much longer.

But my favourite incident was in 2000. My friend and I were gutted to have not been able to get to Barcelona for the 1999 final, and so, early in 2000 we decided that we should try to book tickets for the final in Paris. We had no tickets, but spent 100 quid each on transport. And then United crashed out of the competition to Real Madrid, and so there was no point going to Paris. But, we'd paid. So plans were made for a little holiday anyway. But then, our secret plan 'to visit a mutual friend in Paris' was leaked (actually, by us) to our college lecturer, and he effectively banned us from going. And thought it was meant to be some kind of romantic weekend away. Which it really, really wasn't. So we didn't go. No football, no holiday.

justastraightdog: those two minutes, in 1999, were the greatest of my life. glad they made you happy too. 'who put the ball in the German net? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer'

Also, any idea whether OMWF will be with subtitles or dubbed when shown in German? It's causing me much worry.

Hey Justastraigtdog,

I'm glad Man Utd, made you happy. That particular game, was nervewrecking. I wasn't able to go to Barcelona, as I couldn't get the time off work. I watched this one in a pub favoured by Man Utd supporters.

When we equalized, this mountain of a man picked me up and carried me around the pub, I was still celebrating the first goal, as were must of us, when the second went in. Then the place just erupted, it was crazy and it's a night I will never forget, we waited a long time for that one.

Yeah, I'd sick to watching the football, but OMWF, is definately the best episode of season sux, tape it. Believe me when I say the second half of season sux, is crap, except all the bits with Willow and Tara in them, that is except for their last scene together in SR.

What team do you follow in Germany?
