It's how's the weather Friday MKF 1-17-03

Postby Patches » Thu Jan 16, 2003 10:41 pm

It's freezing in Southern Ontario. Seems the Jet Stream is vacationing in Florida, and has invited every arctic blast of cold air to follow along. Not much snow though (sigh :( )

Good news is our city just put in the ice rink at the park down the street :clap

What do cold weather Kittens do to stay warm?

We're having cold (but a wimpy winter as far as both temp. and snow is concerned) in Minnesota-- -2 right now, high today of 5... cold for me (the native Arizonan!)... I feel like I've triumphed over the winter, though, what with my actually going outside and all... -Nora

Blowing a bloody gale outside. And it's only 9.15 in the morning. I was on the phone earlier and all I could hear was the wind whistling outside. We've been promised 90mph gales. Great. :rolleyes

Blew like **** last night with added rain, Ruth's getting it now.

It lifted the felt on the roof and now I have a semi-flooded bathroom. So it's a new roof. Only a couple of K. :spin - where I'm gonna get the money for this I have'nt a clue. I'm in the middle of re-doing the kitchen [the cooker blew up just before Christmas] - guess what, the roof is leaking there too.

I'm going to move to California if it carries on like this.

Oh Graham, I remember it well. Bleh. I think I was on the verge of getting frostbite when I neglected to take my mittens out with me on a trip to wait for the train. Standing on that platform is one of the singly most cold and miserable moments of my entire life. Heh. As was living in an apartment where the landlady was um...well, selective about when she decided to turn the heating on.

Hey, Tommo, most landlords/ladies are in the city. Waiting for the El, no matter how much you bundle up is quite the experience in Chicago. I have plastic and blankets over my windows and I still can't feel my toes. The things I do to live in a Gay Mecca.

Manitoba is a land of extremes. Last week we had temperatures that went up to +6C. People were playing football and going without coats. This week it dipped to the -20's, so with wind chill it was around -31C. Sometimes there's a certain stillness in the air at those temperatures (you can hear a little farther, I think), and when a car door is closed it sounds brittle.

I'm in Nashville, and yesterday morning we got somewhere between 4 and 8 inches of snow.

This may not sound all that bad to those of you living in more northern climates, but you have to understand that it NEVER snows here. Like, ever. And we are totally unprepared to deal with it. So as of right now, half the driving surfaces in the city are still packed with snow, including the parking lot at my complex, and I'm currently trying to decide whether my vehicle can make it out all right.

Although it was kind of amusing yesterday watching the news reports of all the poor bastards on the road who have no idea how to drive in snow. Heh.

Well, here in good ol' Pittsburgh, it's 16 F but feels like 4. Can't wait for tonight when it's supposed to be 9 F but feeling like 0. Ugghh..

Forgot to add that we also have a few inches of snow. Brrr...

And lucky me with the furnance that doesn't work. Landlord is sending over someone to look at it. But, I have my doubts that they will be able to do anything, as they are the third company to come out. I can't wait until he replaces the friggin' thing.:rage

However, until then, it's lots of snugglies as usual. Which isn't sooooo bad.:blush

New England is freezing. And it has been for like a week now. Around where I live, there's like... two feet of snow on the ground that is just not going anywhere. OTOH, it does make that nice crunch-crunch sound when you walk, which is fun. And the kids are having a blast coasting down the 20' snowpiles that the plow has pushed up in our driveway.

I imagine we'll be in for more snow this winter, but we probably won't get it until it warms up enough to get some moisture in the air. Right now it's cold as stone and dry as dust. This is the first really cold, hard, snowy winter we've had in a few years. Last year's was ridiculously mild. According to the forecast, there's no end to the cold in sight, our weatherman said laconically that the temperatures will range "from cold to freezing" for the next few days.

That said, I would not live anywhere else on earth. :grin We had our first white Christmas this year (where it actually snowed Christmas day) since 1974. A white Christmas is just magical.

Ah the wheather report, that brings back happy memories.:) It feels like so long ago but it has only been 2 years. Hmm I wonder of those butterflies ever made it south or whether that hurricane sucked them up and scattered them to the far corners of the earth.
Anyway, due to global warming winter is no longer part of the Dutch seasons, nowadays we just get autumn, but in order to get at least some sense as to what time of year it is, it has been devided into: wet, wetter, wettest and bloody aweful. It does occasionally freeze, usually when a thin layer of snow has fallen and partly melted. When that happens it will start freezing so the freshly melted snow will turn to ice and cover the sidewalks and it will stay that way for several days to weeks so everyone can experience the joys of falling flat on their faces or asses.
Yes, when it comes to bitching about the wheather the Dutch are the *best*. :smug

Well, as a public service announcement for all you kittens contemplating a move to California, here in southern California, is 9.0 am, 55 degrees f/13 c. Today's forecast is sunny with highs in the upper 70s f/mid 20s c to low 80s f/high 20s c. :D

Of course, here in California, we don't have whoever this "gale" woman is who is wandering around the UK getting blown by Ruth. :spin

SWRD, San Francisco is beautiful, but you and your lovely bride-of-convenience will get a lot more sun in Southern California. And Ruth can go to Long Beach or Palm Springs to, uh, play.

It's shaping up to be a beautiful day here in coastal SoCal. On days like this, it's hard to get any work done. I just want to take a walk on the beach, or put the top down (the car's, not mine) and take a drive around the coast, or...

Sorry. Shutting up now.

Hmmm, convenience and love in the same sentence. :drool

Besides SF can get kinda misty at times..... but I'm sure the Bay Area Kittens will be glad to see you.

Checkie: You know I know SF. We had a long chat about it last year. You gave me directions [I think it was you]to the lovely Tara's Willow Cafe in wonderful downtown Menlo Park,[ where I had a really tasty bacon sarnie and fries to go. SF has fast become a second home to me with 4 visits in the last 5 years. I tend to hang out in North Beach [not in a suggestive way I would add]

Wow. I've been away from the board for a few days. 'Scuse me while I curl up in the Kitten love, wrap it around me like a big, booby-print blanket, and feel the love. *gropes Ruth*

Ahem.

Speaking of, might I add my own hint of jealous pique to that of everyone else regarding this shady "Gale" character. Why is everyone getting blown but me? Hee. I sound like Garfield.

Anyway, yeah, it's a gorgeous day here in San Diego. Too bad I have to spend it in the modern day dungeon that I proudly call the ninth level of h- um, work. :hmm

And incidentally, how funny, The Rose. I didn't know you lived in Raleigh. As of a few months ago, my partner and I were thinking about moving out that way. To think, we could have been neighbors.

SWRDie, that wasn't me you talked to about Tara's Willow Cafe. I don't know the Bay Area very well anymore. But mistiness aside, SF is a beautiful city, and a lovely place for a second home.:wink

And you obviously won't have to worry about Ruth getting bored there while you go about your business.

Nix, I can give you the skoop, best if you email me direct.

SF is one of the friendliest cities I have ever been to.

Each area has its own vibe. There are places you dont want to frequent at certain times of the day or night but, hey that's true about just about anywhere.

Also, I bet the Bay Area Kittens out there can also give you some pointers.

Pick up a copy of the Lonely Planet Guide to California/Nevada [better than the Rough Guide] which does help. There are stacks of interesting web sites which I'll email you with.

strewth Checkie who was it then? Never mind, we all agree that SF is brill, although someone will no doubt come in and tell us it isnt.
Ha! you've got me dreaming now, just think about showing Ruth around the Castro District, by the Castro theater. I'd never get her away from there :party
