Whats In a Name Friday MKF 1/3/03

Postby oneyedchicklet » Fri Jan 03, 2003 7:57 am

Good morning and Happy Friday Kittens!!

Its a daily thread combined with a little help I need. I volunteer for an animal rescue group where we keep the animals in foster homes until they can get adopted. I am on the cat part of the group since my landlord won't allow dogs. We have a very large group of kittens coming in for adoption and kitten season quickly approaching so I have to come up with names we can use. I've used all 50 states already, characters from movies and television and the computer program I have tells me how many times a name has been used. Yesterday, in ez chat, the kittens were a big help with giving me names of cities and states in other countries. So here's my question...What are some of the names you would give to a pet?
I have three cats of my own named "Nuisance, Rio and Denny"

Aside from the obvious MKF, what would W/T name another pet?

Have a good Friday Kittens!!

Love to All,
Barb

I have names for three pairs of kittens:

Up and down.

Strange and charm.

Beauty and truth.

Kudos to any kitten who recognizes where I got the names from and why they're paired.

How 'bout Trial and Error? OK, maybe not, but I see humor going into W/T's pet names, esp. after MKF... or perhaps magically inspired names?

dmw, you have quite an affinity for subatomic physics. :wink I'll let someone else state the exact reference.

My dad once had a couple cats named George and Gracie. So, you could try Bogart and Bacall, or Burton and Taylor, or whatever suits from that angle.

I've also been reading lots of Tolkien lately; there's some really interesting elven names in there. I'll list you some off (this is the house of Finw):

Mriel
Fanor
Meadhros
Maglor
Celegorm
Caranthir
Curufin
Celebrimbor
Amrod
Amras

Indis
Fingolfin
Fingon
Turgon
Aredhel
Finarfin
Finrod
Orodreth
Angrod
Aegnor
Galadriel

That's just a sample; you can pick up The Silmarillion or Return of the King and flip through their appendices for lots of interesting names.

I like Miriel and Aredhel, but for the other names, I'm not sure that I'd want to name my kittens after the seven sons of Feanor though they are cool names.

If I did, I certainly wouldn't play with them by taking some of their toys away from them, especially their three favorite ones.

Ah, the flavours of quarks eh DMW? Truth and beauty are much better names than top and bottom as I was taught.

Afraid I'm not much help with the cat names, mine's unimaginatively called Tom but the shelter had kindly named him that.Try looking at star names, personally I find some of them fascinating.

Sonya and Kalita, you're right. It looks like there are more physics oriented kitties than I thought.

I like your suggestion of star names, Sonya: Arcturus, Auriga, Deneb, Epsilon Eridani, Mintaka, Spica, and Vega are some of my favorites. Lunar names might be good too, either the seas of our moon, or the dozens of gas giant moons.

Descriptive names can be fun too: Birdcatcher, Mousebiter, Clawkitty, Squirrelstalker, Snakeswallower, Tailchaser, ... Lazybones. (-;

Well,

I would like to point out that today is J.R.R. Tolkien's "Eleventy-first" birthday, 111. That is the same age Bilbo was when "Lord of the Rings" opened. Frodo was 33.

Lot's of big Tolkien related stuff going on today. I'll celebrate by reading Phil Fogllio's "Galadriel - Elf Madien with a Whip" - I mean watching "Fellowship" again. ;)

Of course the idea of reading about hobbits dressed as "theiving little psychos that dress like Adam Ant" has it's appeal.

While I was at the Uni I named my cats depending on the main historical character related to what I was studying at the time (imagine that! I had a cat named after Christopher Columbus!). Or a literary creature that was reading at the moment (once I named one after an opera character). Now I prefer naming them with liquor names (Whisky, Cognac, Rhum, Tequila, pick your choice...) or stones names (Zaphire, Diamond, Quartz, Pearl -I know, it isn't a stone...- and so on). But some cats tell their names themselves, as Willow and Tara were expecting MKF to do. We named a stray by telling him names and he *choosed* his own by coming to us when we used it.

Why is it that we don't have a MKF emoticon? :(

Hope it helped. Lovely volunteer work you are doing.

Hey, DMW, don't you think that if you name a cat *Epsilon Eridani* it will scratch you to death while sleeping? Mine would! :lol

I have two cats called Missy & Tweet. Both getting their names from musicians who's albums were gracing my CD player at their arrival at my home.

A long, long time ago I used to have a hamster called rabbit. I wanted a rabbit but my mum said they were too big to live in the house. :cry

Other names which were considered but rejected as they didn't suit girlie kittens were:
Jeffers
Shearer
Owen
Henry
Cole
Campbell

I was going to be getting a kitty in September, but that didn't work out. Her name was going to be either Kimchi or Gingham.

on an entirely different note, here's an email I got this morning that I think we could help out with:

Another administration snub
By Molly Ivins
Creators Syndicate
The latest in a long line of anti-woman decisions by the Bush administration is, for once, getting some attention-in part because of the sheer cheapness of the move. President Bush has decided not to send the $34 million approved by both houses of Congress for the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).
The fund provides contraception, family planning and safe births, and works against the spread of HIV and against female genital mutilation in the poorest countries of the world. Thirty-four million dollars goes a long way in the parts of the world where more than 600,000 women die every year from pregnancy and childbirth, many of them children themselves.
Of course, our poor government is so broke that it can't afford to waste $34 million on women in poor countries. It has more important things to do, like spending $100 million on "promoting marriage." Two women-Jane Roberts, a retired teacher in California, and Lois Abraham, a lawyer in New Mexico-have started a splendid symbolic protest, and it is spreading by e-mail, fax, newsletters and all kinds of women's groups. The organizers are looking for "34 million Friends of UNFPA" to send $1 each to the United Nations (FPA) at 220 E. 42nd St., New York, NY 10017.
Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, director of the UNFPA, said the $34 million U.S. contribution would have helped prevent 2 million unwanted pregnancies, 800,000 induced abortions, 4,700 maternal deaths and 77,000 infant and child deaths.
We don't have $34 million to save the lives of poor women, but Bush wants to spend $135 million on abstinence education, which doesn't work.
According to that fountain of misinformation, the Rev. Jerry Falwell: "This announcement angered school sex educators, who concentrate on teaching our nation's students that they should explore their sexuality and ignore the consequences. But Mr. Bush said government can teach children how to exhibit sexual control."
Actually, sex education is entirely about the consequences of "exploring sexuality," and it works. The Guttmacher Institute published a report last week showing that the abortion rate is down by 11 percent precisely because young people are getting more education about sex. One would think the anti-abortion forces would be grateful. Instead, there is every indication that in addition to taking away a woman's right to choose whether to have an abortion, the Bush administration is going after contraception.
Bush now wants to make W. David Hager chairman of the Food and Drug Administration's Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. Hager is an ob-gyn from Kentucky who wants the FDA to reverse its approval of RU-486, the "abortion pill."
Although Hager is the editor of a book that includes the essay "Using the Birth Control Pill is Ethically Unacceptable," he told Maureen Dowd of The New York Times that he does not agree with the essay. Then why include it? He does not prescribe contraceptives for single women, does not do abortions, will not prescribe RU-486 and will not insert IUDs. Hager believes that headaches, PMS and eating disorders can
be cured by reading Scripture. I do not want this man in charge of my health policy.
It took almost all of human history for the population of the globe to reach 1 billion people in 1800. It took only from 1987 to 1999 for world population to grow from 5 billion to 6 billion. At current rates, we will reach 13 billion by the middle of the 21st century. Ninety-five percent of this growth will be in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Studies estimate that by 2025, two out of every three people on Earth will live in water-stressed conditions. The stress on global resources is already apparent.
While we spend trillions of dollars on weapons, the military and homeland security, the real threats-water scarcity, climate change and population growth-advance unchecked.
_____
Dear Friends:
I am asking you to join in sending a message from 34,000,000 American women. The message will help women living in countries where the lack of medical services (not to mention the lack of other necessities that we take for granted every day) results in hardships beyond our imaginations.
The US made a commitment of $34 million to the United Nations Population Fund last winter, with Congress approving the funds and President Bush signing the bill containing the appropriation. The Fund provides family planning and reproductive health services to women in 142 countries. It has a budget of about $270 million worldwide and does "invaluable work," as Secretary of State Colin Powell said during his confirmation hearings. The Fund's programs help some of the most impoverished and underserved women in the world.
Our country has reneged on its commitment. The reason given for refusing to release the $34 million is that the Fund provides aid to Chinese government agencies that force women to have abortions. However, a State Department fact-finding mission was sent to China in May to investigate exactly that allegation. The mission reported that it found no evidence that the program "knowingly supported or participated in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization" and recommended that the funds be released. In addition, the Population Fund is barred by law from using US money in China and, as a U.N. organization, from funding any abortion related activities.
If 34,000,000 American women send one dollar each to the U.N. Population Fund, we can help the Fund continue its "invaluable work" and at the same time confirm that providing family planning and reproductive health services to women who would otherwise have none is a humanitarian issue, not a political one.
PLEASE, NOW: Put a dollar, wrapped in a plain sheet of paper, in an envelope marked with "34 Million Friends." If you wish your gift to be acknowledged on the web address www.unfpa.org, print your name on the sheet of paper. Then mail it today to:
Chief, Resource Mobilization Branch
UNFPA
220 East 42nd Street
New York 10017
Or contribute online at www.unfpa.org

Past physicists, especially Schrodinger, have liked to do cruel things to cats. Hopefully we live in a more enlightened era. (-;

Sea, I don't let my cat sleep with me as I'm allergic so I'm safe at night at least...

I forgot one of my favorite kitten names from Sandman, a name taken by the kitten for himself: Walks the Night Alone.

Well i had a cat named Hermes (not after the deluxe shop:no , but after the Greek god:angel )
I personally find that names from the greek mythology like Ares, Heracles, Hercules, Aphrodite........ or also names of Egyptian Gods and Godesses (cats were hallowed in ancient Egypte), like Isis, Ra, Osiris, Anubis ...... could be great for cats!:cool

One of my fave LOTR names has always been Glorfindel for some reason, and they cut him from the film too.Of course my disappointment was lessened somewhat by the fact that it got Liv Tyler more face-time.

The only cats I've been sparring with lately are named Whistler and uh...Xander. Bad cat name, great cat. I could suggest you use strange Canadian place names for cats, but does anyone really want a cat named Medicine Hat?

well, the fellow on the left is Marmalade... but I thought about pumpkin & OJ (but definitely didn't want that one).. and sherbet...

but there are all sorts of food names you can use.. I don't like using people names for pets.. but a lot of people do that... and that's ok..

I'd just be afraid of calling my pet Ralph & then meeting my new boss, Ralph!!! or naming my cat Chrissie & falling madly in love with Chris!!! it would be much too embarrassing...

so, there's campbells, noodles, hamburger, chocolate (mmmm), butterscotch.... but you get what I mean... :grin

I fostered a pair of little boy kittens awhile back and named them Marks & Spencer (yes, yes, I miss England, OK? Unabashedly huge Anglophile here, move along, then). Although, after a few days it started to seem odd calling the kitten "Marks" (too much of a Communist leaning there) so that one became Milo. *shrug* It seemed to fit him, though; Milo was calm, fluffy, and mellow, while Spencer was the lean, sneaky one.

Just thought a comment on the National Champions was in order-- go OSU! I regretted having to fly back to college before the Fiesta Bowl (Phoenix's my hometown), but I got to see the game on TV, and it was marvelous! Well played and suspenseful, just like a bowl game should be (and of course, underdogs always make for a feel-good win). Excitement! -Nora

I'm just making Friday under the wire...DWM - loved the quarkiness of your pets...hee hee. But let's not forget their antiparticles - Anti-Up, Anti-Down, Anti-Strange, Anti-Charm, Anti-Top(or Anti-Truth), and Anti-Bottom (or Anti-Beauty).

Lord, I'm such a geek. :rolleyes

Anyway, nothing but cats around here :grin Thought I'd put a note in for my black labradors - Kayleigh and Willow. Will, incidentally is a boy dog I've had for almost 12 years. He's bitter, non-communicative and loves chocolate. Kayleigh (girl-dog), on the other hand is playful, needy and loves watching cooking programs.

Previously, I was owned by a pair of boxers, named Boscoe and Bailey, two brilliant cats named Crick and Watson (hee hee if you spot that one), and a white rat named Trudy.

For some reason, Trudy was always a bit nervous at home; never understood why. :hmm

I adopted my last three cats as adults, so they came pre-named. One of them had been given a "people" name, "Sarah," which also happened to be my mother's first name. This kitty had a habit of taking flying leaps and landing on people's shoulders, with no advance warning. So, many times my mother would be visiting, her feline namesake would land claws-out on my shoulder, and I'd be shouting, "God damn it, Sarah!" Then, embarassed, I'd look over at my mother, and she'd be laughing her ass off.

Our 4 cats' names are unimaginative:
Stubs - has no tail, gray and white, female, missing more than a tail, and afraid of Cookie.
Smokey - large, all gray, female, beautiful and cuddly, and afraid of Cookie.
Mr. Kitty - large, orange, the only male cat who has stuck with us, and very respectful of Cookie.
Cookie - small, jet black, female, beautiful, and psycho. She doesn't want to be held or cuddled. She just wants to kill things. Our home is in a forest on an island. Cookie has eaten nearly every variety of creature that lives out here, even bats! If she can't kill it, she terrorizes it. Even the raccoons don't come around anymore. No mouse problem here. If she was about 10 pounds heavier, I wouldn't come around here either.
