Its a Giants Win the Pennant Tuesday 10-15, MKF

Postby Rosenberg » Tue Oct 15, 2002 2:47 am

This thread is dedicated to Rally in honor of her Giants.

So, the World Series is now set with al all-California match-up between the Anaheim Angels and the San Francisco Giants. For the first time, two wild card teams will be opposing one another for the championship. Does anybody have any special recollections of past World Series that come to mind? My first would be the 1968 Series between the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. The Tigers came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the championship and make this kid very, very happy. They also helped to bring the city of Detroit together after the terrible riots of 1967. Thats about the only good thing I can recall about 1968. Other than that, it was a terrible year with assassinations, riots and the escalation of the war in Vietnam.

Back to baseball, whom do you think Willow and Tara would be rooting for? I would say they might favor Anaheim because theyre from Southern California and, living in the hellmouth, they would probably be on the side of the Angels.

Ah, thanks Rosenberg. My boys put me through the ringer this season, but especially a lot over the past two weeks. Both of my past two weekends have been spent screaming my lungs out at the baseball games. It's been a rollercoaster and exorcised the demons of a few past NLCS and World Series not to be.

Wednesday I will attempt to get some Series tickets, but they are scare. The Giants have about 7000 per game to distribute to non season ticket holders. The last time I had tickets to a World Series, was in 1987 when you would purchase the tickets for the NLCS and the WS all at once. The Cardinals knocked out the Giants that year and my tickets were useless.

The most memorable series, and not in a good way, would be 1989, the Bay Series. Though I was a poor book store clerk at the time, I was sitting on my couch for Game one when the imfamous earthquake hit the area and knocked out our power for 3 days. That series was postponed for a week while we picked up the pieces of that mess and the Giants went down quietly to the A's in four games.

Hopefully this year will be different.

So good luck to the Angels, but GO GIANTS

I have very little in the way of football knowledge. Pretty much all I know comes from the Kitten! But then again, my local team is Da Bears, so...that's OK. :)

I'm all for the beer drinking and hot dog eating and marching bands and whatnot.

A big birthday shout-out today to Tulipp, and a great day to the rest of you! Oct. 15 is always a favorite of mine b/c it marks the first time I ever kissed a girl--definitely a cause for celebration!

it's really cool that it will be an all California series this year. i hope the Angels can win it this year. i was at game 5 in 1986 when they were one game away from the World Series and Dave Henderson hit that home run.
i like the Giants, but Go Angels :bounce :bounce

my favorite World Series moment was when Kirk Gibson hobbled up to the plate in the '88 series and hit that home run off Eckersley.

i think Willow and Tara would root for the Angels because they would think the Rally Monkey is cute.

GO THE VERTICALLY CHALLENGED!!!!!!

I'm sorry. My british passport means im not so familiar with the fabulous sport that is american football. Personally I'm more of a Curling gal. Something about grown men and women chasing a kettle on ice with a broom deeply excites me.

Anyhoo, did anyone hear that Naomi from Fame Academy is leaving??!!!!I'm truly devastated :(

Ah,

The Cards are out of it, so no interest for me.
And not like I'll see my local team (Da Cubs) there anytime soon.

my favorite World Series moment was when Kirk Gibson hobbled up to the plate in the '88 series and hit that home run off Eckersley.

Well, if were going to do favorite Kirk Gibson World Series moments, Ill go for the home run he hit off of Goose Gossage in the 84 Series to help win it for the Tigers. Thats about the only winning memory Tigers fans have had in the last two decades.

With all due respect to the British kitties, the World Series is about baseball, not football, although its true that it is football season. The football Super Bowl wont be played until the end of January.

Hey, I almost forgot today is the 28th anniversary of the first day I started working for my company. It was just going to be temporary until I saved up enough money for tuition. I guess Ive saved up enough for tuition by now.

Go Giants!

Okay now, everyone eat your almond tortes but that's all. I feel bad because everybody already said happy birthday to me and the other October kittens in the October birthday thread, and I feel really guilty now, kind of passive agressive.

Almost like if I started talking about some guy all the time, and then when everyone else started talking about that guy, I just blamed them and quietly went away.

Not that I would do that; I never would. It's just an example.

So, okay, my favorite team is the, um, Crullers?

This is a sports thing right?? Oh well so begins and ends my knowledge.

Happy birthday Juli, just wondering when we might see the article you were planning on fan fiction? And it saves resurrecting that thread - though if it is not archived I might have more for you in about a month.

Many happy returns, Juli! Returns of what, I do not know. How many? I don't know that either. Just that there'll be many :)

As the almond torte has no mention of chocolate, I'll pass if that's okay. Not that I want to be critical of your choice, but chocolate's chocolate. And a cake without is not a cake, IMO.

Now baseball...hmm. That's like rounders right? Accept with longer bats so the ball's easier to hit? ;)

Rally,

Think you can get some tix for me too? God, I only wish. Can't afford the steep prices. I'll have to be content to sit at home and watch the game on TV. If we win though, I'm sure I'll be able to hear the roar of the crowd in my living room all the way down in South City.

I was on the edge of my seat last night when Lofton walked up to the plate. My boss (who has a pacemaker) thought he was going to have a heart attack when Lofton whacked that ball into the outfield. God bless the Cards for throwing that ball to the far right of home allowing Bell to slide in for the win. What a feeling! Were you there last night? I can only imagine the excitement.

As this is a W/T board...my W/T comment is that they have no interest in baseball. However, I can see Anya being really into it. She would decide to bet on the series and at Willow and Tara's persuasion would bet on the Angels (cause they know someone named Angel). Can't you just see Anya jumping up and down on the couch as the Giants crush the Angels and W/T staring at her like she's insane? Ok...maybe it's just me.

Thanks, Katharyn (and Ruby and relativegirl and IT and Emma. You all are just the best).

As for the article, well, it is coming along. I am not a particularly fast writer, and until recently, I admit I was putting most of my energy into my fic, but that's finished now, so the research is on the front burner again.

As for [b:bc9c085061] when[/b:bc9c085061], the burning question, well, may I just direct you to the queue that includes my mother, my therapist, and my dissertation committee? :wink

Oh, and I'm always looking for more responses for anyone! Even when the first version is finished, I'll be continuing to ask questions, so anything you have will be much, much appreciated!

Happy Birthday, Tulipp!
Secretive birthday wishes so you won't feel bad.

I don't remember any particular games and/or series. I remember my grandmother telling us about the earthquake before we'd heard about it on the news or anything because she'd been watching the game.

I'm going to be all excited for a minute because my little brother is coming to visit this weekend!! I love my little brother, he's one of my best friends. We tell each other absolutely everything, which his girlfriend doesn't like (she's coming too, incidentally). I guess she figures that he doesn't need to share aspects of her personal life with me. If I had a girlfriend, I'd probably tell him all about her too. It helps to have someone to tell everything to, especially when these things could prove harmful to the person in question at some point. So YAY! my brother's coming to visit!! :grin

[b:a27eb72f52] BoredNow99[/b:a27eb72f52] ..rounders, that's exactly what I was thinking!

Going off the subject for a second, thought I would relay my smile moment of the day. My job involves me writing very long and boring audit reports, which get graded on a traffic light system . As I'm putting the finishing touches to one today, my boss takes a look and says something along the lines of 'That's what I like to see, lots of amber', to which I can't help reply, 'I'd happily look at Amber all day'. Course this went right over her head, but it made me smile.

Back to the rounders, I know nothing about baseball, so good luck to both teams

Ah, I'd probably better not. But you know what I mean. The second worst thing that's happened to me this summer was finding out that you have a girlfriend. Heh. Go me with my "too lateness". ;)

Well, I'm biased because I met my gf at an Angels game. And I think Jackie Autry, former owner Gene Autry's widow, is kind of, uh, attractive. (Middle-aged, short graying hair, nice smile, looks athletic.) I'm real happy that she's still a big presence in the Angels family.:wink

Edison Field is a friendly, comfortable place to watch a game, and Willow would find the parking easy and the atmosphere in the stands generally polite. I think she'd be able to relax and enjoy the game, rather than worrying about how long it was going to take to get out of the parking lot after the game, a la Dodger Stadium. And I could see Tara really getting into the game and yelling at the umpire that he needed to go find his guide dog.

I would have to agree with those who have mentioned Kirk Gibson's 9th inning, 3-2 count, home run in '88 World Series. I was actually there at Dodger Stadium, along the 3rd base line. Pretty much the most incredible sports moment. If you don't count when Notre Dame beat UNC during overtime for the first and last time in women's college soccer.

Willow and Tara would definitely be cheering for the Angels!
