Postby maudmac » Thu Sep 05, 2002 7:06 pm

Hey, folks. Happy Friday.

IAMS is evil. I could probably rant for days without taking a breath about just how evil it is, but see for yourself:

www.iamskills.com/index.shtml

From the site:

[i:c1efd40355] Unbelievable as it sounds, the Iams Co., manufacturer of the Iams/Eukanuba line of quality dog and cat foods, has been harming and even killing dogs and cats, claiming to make a better brand of pet food. In dozens of painful and invasive experiments, hundreds of dog and cats just like your animal companion, were made to suffer and sometimes die in the name of "nutrition research." These experiments were not designed to help the animals involved. These innocent victims were all healthy animals who were used simply as disposable objects.[/i:c1efd40355]

(This is an In Defense of Animals site, by the way.)

Now, I've been feeding my cats this shit for a long time, believing it was a superior food. I'm shocked and horrified to learn about what IAMS has been doing this whole time. With [b:c1efd40355] my[/b:c1efd40355] money.

So, the question is, when has something you've had faith in (a company, a person, a friend, anything or anyone, really) turned out to be something scary? Besides Joss/ME, I mean.

Hope everyone has a good day today. Take care of yourselves.

[i:c1efd40355] Edited to add: Thanks, Warduke, for editing in the date. I'm really sorry! I forgot all about that! How can I make it up to you? Um...ten ten is an underestimate! I vote for eleven eleven![/i:c1efd40355]

That's really disgusting. This site has more info. I don't think I can express how disturbing I find this. Forcing animals to gain weight and then starving them? It's all beyond cruel. All of it.

Hmm, I'd have to get back to you on the something I had faith in thing. It's been a while.

Hmm, and no doubt Willow and Tara would be outraged about this too.

Is IAMS the only dog food that does this? Do the others do this? Are there any that you would say are better?

This weekend is going to be a rather stressful one here in Pasadena. James Dobson, of "Focus on the Family" fame, is hosting a conference he calls "Love Won Out," this Saturday at Pasadena's First Church of the Nazarene. It's described as "a dynamic one-day conference addressing, understanding and preventing homosexuality."

Oh, and Mr. "God Hates Fags" himself, Fred Phelps will be here, too. :mad The First Church of the Nazarene claims that he's coming to [b:385df4237d] protest[/b:385df4237d] the conference, not be a part of it. Go figure.

Information on the conference can be found here. However, if you're a particularly sensitive soul, I strongly recommend that you [b:385df4237d] don't click it![/b:385df4237d]

Click this link instead. It's the entire run-down on what my church and several other groups in the Pasadena/LA area are doing in response to Dr. Dobson, Rev. Phelps and their cronies.

Events at All Saints begin Friday evening at 6:00 with a "sign party," where you can make picket signs in preparation for Saturday. Then at 7:30, there's a candlelight vigil called "Love Embraces All." Speakers and music are promised, and the vigil will go from All Saints to Pasadena City Hall - not a long way, really, just a walk around the block.

Here's the plan for Saturday as the "Love Won Out" conference is going on:

[quote:385df4237d][b:385df4237d][i:385df4237d]Quote:[/i:385df4237d][/b:385df4237d]
After much discussion and fear of arrest and harassment, the PFLAG group decided not to "picket" directly in front of the First Church of the Nazarene. They felt it was too inflammatory and they were not comfortable with the possibility that some of the attendees or supporters would confront them with biblical text that they could not refute nor appropriately respond. Instead, it was decided that they would use the old "Burma Shave" approach and have parents and families staggered along the large median strip on Sierra Madre Boulevard with signs simply stating "We love our gay son/daughter and so does God". We were affectionately calling this the "Parade of Parents". The PFLAG parents generally get the biggest applause and lots of tears flow when they march by in the gay pride parade and if the attendees of this conference are GLBT persons who are questioning their faith and relationship with God and their families, this demonstration of support and love will be powerful. A PFLAG member had contacted Mel White of SoulForce for input and suggestions. He was very forthcoming with information and will be used as a telephone/e-mail resource as needed. Someone was contacting the Pasadena Police department today to get their input on standing in the median versus the sidewalks all the way up Sierra Madre Boulevard.
[/quote:385df4237d]

I imagine updated information will be available at the vigil.

Sunday morning is when Fred Phelps plans to picket All Saints Church. Thanks to some "persuasion" from the counter-terrorism unit of the Pasadena PD, Fred is now saying he'll only be there from 8am to 9am. Here's the official All Saints position on how he is to be treated:

[quote:385df4237d][b:385df4237d][i:385df4237d]Quote:[/i:385df4237d][/b:385df4237d]
Our task is now to ask our church and the larger community to practice holy restraint. I do not want anyone or any group to plan actions on that morning to counter the presence of Phelps - that only empowers him and puts us in a vulnerable position.

Instead, we will let our silence and our worship be the appropriate action and we will trust the [Pasadena] PD to provide a safe structure for the church to congregate within.
[/quote:385df4237d]

All Saints Church is located at 132 N. Euclid Avenue in Pasadena. If you want to come join the fun, you'll be more than welcome, whether you're a devoutly religious person (of any faith), an atheist or anything in between. :)

Dammit. Iams is the only food my cat likes to eat. I tried to switch her to another kind recently and she won't eat it, the little weasel. Do you have any reccomendations of a *good* food for her that doesn't involve tests like this in their process?

You know Phelps as hateful as he is can be easily dismissed. But Focus on the Family and their cure agenda is really a scary thing.
I did find it amusing that apparently John Paulk is back in good standing with them as a socalled "ex-gay" after he got caught a few years ago in a DC gay bar. Yeah he's cured.

Wow. I checked out the family.org site and could not believe what I saw. They're like something out of 'But I'm a Cheerleader'.

At least when I looked at the g-d hates fags site, I could rant/cry/be freaked and then calm down by thinking those people must have serious emotional/mental problems. But with "Love Won Out" it's people that seriously, rationally, spiritually believe in that shit. My only possible reaction is laughter, I can't bear the idea of taking them seriously.

In terms of the topic, being let down, my personal experiences generally involve friends. Who claim to be open-minded, unconditional friends. Then you find out there's just 'one thing' they take exception to, and the friendship becomes uncomfortable and superficial. *sigh* let's turn this thread around and make it happy!

I'm sorry, folks. I should have mentioned this before. Today is my day to screw up.

Companies I think are trustworthy:

Halo

I have been dealing directly with this company for years and I trust them completely. (They're nice people, too.) They make a wide range of products for pets. All their foods use human-grade meat. One of the problems with most pet foods is the use of pet-grade meat. Pet-grade meat is from animals that arrive at the slaughterhouse dead, diseased, dying, or disabled. (Known in the industry as "the 4 Ds.") Another issue is that most other pet foods are processed at such high temperatures that many of the essential fatty acids, enzymes, and other assorted good stuff are destroyed.

PetGuard

I don't deal with this company directly, but I am very familiar with their products. They're committed to not only making good, healthy food, but also lessening the impact of pet food production on the environment.

I'm not familiar with the companies below. I just googled them up.

Canidae

NaturesPet

Preferred Natural Pet Food Products

Owen & Mandeville Pet Products, Inc.

Hope that helps. You might have to get these at a health food store, if you can't find them in regular stores. They do tend to be more expensive, but you know it's worth it.

Holley,
I am a Vet Tech and work for two different animal hospitals and neither one will sell any of the IAMS prescription diets. My cats will only be feed food from the Hills/Science Diet company. And it nothing to do with the fact that I get them for a big discount. I have more disturbing information regarding the IAM/Eukanuba company. I am also a volunteer for an animal rescue group and foster cats in my home as well as feeding colonies of feral cats. I don't even feed them IAMS when a bag shows up in our donation bin.
If anyone would like more information regarding another brand of food for their pets, feel free to contact me. I'll be glad to help out anyway I can. And unlike the IAMS/Eukanuba company, my advice is free.

Love to All,
Barb

Jeebus, Maudmac. We fed our late, lamented cat IAMS food. Colour me highly unimpressed by those folks.

Thanks to GracefulVictory and Bob re: info about 9/11 and about the Rolling Requiem. Neat idea. Anyone taping your choir's performance, Bob?

As a personal aside, 9/11 is our wedding anniversary. Sadly, it's a date Jennifer and I will be unable to forget. However, we are going out that night with family and friends.

And Bob, good luck, I hope it turns out ok, I can't tell you how much that man (and I use that term very loosely) churns my stomach :puke

edited to add that I saw your edit Holley and I have to say, eleven eleven sounds good to me :grin

Good luck Bob over this weekend I hope it goes well and you're able to combat the animosity that they are sureto throw your way, I'll be ineterested ot hear how it goes :)

And IAMS petfood, well we feed the dogs Purina and that doesn't seem to have a bad reputation (I hope). I can't bring myself to let the dogs eat Pedigree Chum - for when your dog is so hungry it can eat a horse. The horse lover in me just won't permit it :)

Bob, have better luck than I did!

I just found out that my sale of Shadow Earth Games fell through. :(

My chances were only about 1 in a 1000 anyway, but the few grand it would have given me would have been nice.

Sigh...I guess, I may have to close it up for good and try to find distributors for my last two products.

Been kinda of a shitty year to say the least.

Ford Motor Company is my devil.

Remember the Pinto? The classic Mustangs were nearly as bad. They failed most of Ford's own rear-end crash tests, due to a transparently foolish drop-in gas tank design. As with the Pinto, Ford decided that it would ultimately cost more money to make the cars safer than the company would potentially pay out in injury/wrongful death judgments.

I had ridden or driven hundreds of thousands of miles in those cars before I found out about this, and it makes me angry that auto makers can care so little about safety in their efforts to make a profit.

Bob: you, All Saints, and Pasadena in general will be in my prayers this weekend. Talk about a double-dose of devilry (Dobson and Phelps, that is).

I found this sad though:

[quote:b4d9fcda56][b:b4d9fcda56][i:b4d9fcda56]Quote:[/i:b4d9fcda56][/b:b4d9fcda56]
the PFLAG group . . . were not comfortable with the possibility that some of the attendees or supporters would confront them with biblical text that they could not refute nor appropriately respond.
[/quote:b4d9fcda56]

It's sad because it's so easy to refute! It's either 1) Hebrew biblical law---which Christians are not [i:b4d9fcda56] supposed[/i:b4d9fcda56] to be held to anyway, or 2) condemnation of pedophilia ("Fine, we hate it too. What does that have to do w/ me and my over-18 girlfriend/boyfriend?"), or 3) Paul's [i:b4d9fcda56] opinions[/i:b4d9fcda56] about something he doesn't understand (He thinks it's bad that [b:b4d9fcda56] heterosexuals are committing homosexual acts[/b:b4d9fcda56]). Neither he nor anyone else of the period can really conceive of the idea of [b:b4d9fcda56] homosexual persons[/b:b4d9fcda56]: completely healthy/"holy" people who [i:b4d9fcda56] feel sexually attracted [b:b4d9fcda56] only[/b:b4d9fcda56] to the same sex.[/i:b4d9fcda56]

Note: I'm not dissing bi's (heck, I am one!), merely contrasting [i:b4d9fcda56] homosexual orientation[/i:b4d9fcda56] w/ this old myth that "homosexual acts are committed only by [b:b4d9fcda56] hets[/b:b4d9fcda56] who're overly horny-promiscuous/worshipping false gods(sexually)/would rather deal w/ a 'youth' than a 'spouse'/ etc. " That doesn't describe us bi's either! :angel

Anyway, hang in there.:pray Show those 'phobes what the Holy Spirit is [b:b4d9fcda56] really[/b:b4d9fcda56] about! :party

GG [i:b4d9fcda56] I hope to be getting a dog before too long: making mental note not to buy IAMS[/i:b4d9fcda56] Out

Edited for impassioned typos!

That IAMS site made me cry. And I don't cry, ever.

Animals are my soft spot. It literally makes me sick to my stomach to hear about things like that. It is NOT okay to torture animals, EVER. Thank God I've never fed IAMS food to any of my cats, and now I know not to start. This may sound crass or something ... I honestly don't mean it that way .... but when 9/11 happened, of course I was sad and shocked and angry just like everyone else. But I didn't really break down until a couple days later when someone mentioned that a lot of the people who died, or who lived near Ground Zero and had to evacuate the area, probably had pets. And I started thinking about all those poor dogs and cats and birds and whatever, who were all alone and probably very scared from all the explosions and the noise, and just kept sitting in their apartments waiting for their owners to come home, and some of them never did. And a lot of those pets probably ran out of food and water and eventually died, never knowing why they had been abandoned, and dammit, now I'm crying again.

I have to leave this thread now. Sorry.

But thanks for the IAMS info, maudmac, really. I'm glad you told us.
