Postby WiccansIllusion » Mon Aug 26, 2002 6:39 pm

well, it's almost tuesday and probably is tuesday in a lot of places so I thought I'd start a daily thread. I was just thinking about my first concert, which was the Bangels in 1988. And it got me to thinking, two questions really. For kittens, what was your first concert? I've also been lucky enough to meet the Indigo Girls, and see them about 7 times, Sarah M, and several others as well as the Grateful Dead. thanks to having a hippy father.

And the second, what do you think was Willow and Tara's first concert? I can personally see Willow being a closet Greenday or Weezer fan...and Tara probably would have seen Loreena Mckennit with her mother, or someone along those lines.

Dar Williams... If _The Pagans and the Christians_ doesnt describe them dead on, nothing does..

Oh and Tara had a crush on Natalie Merchant

first concert: dont laugh, but it was the novelty band "Da Yoopers". The first real concert was Paul Simon..

My first concert was Rush in 1983 at Radio City Music Hall. I did several hard rock shows in high school, like Van Halen in 1984 with David Lee, and Iron Maiden in 85 and Triumph in 86. Saw Squeeze in 87 at my college, and Ziggy Marley at my school also. Seeing the Dead for the first time in 89 was a seminal event. I ended up catching the Dead 43 times before Jerry kicked off.

My job is as a music writer, so I see upwards of 50 shows a year. I love Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler (whom I've seen since 91, before anyone knew who they were). I enjoy Phish and other jam bands. I love bluegrass, and go to Telluride every year and really like Tim O'Brien. I would go to large lengths to go to an Emmylou Harris concert. I love Irish music, like fiddle player Kevin Burke and Scottish Celtic style like Natalie MacMaster. In the last 4 weeks, I went to see Yes, RockyGrass Festival, Natalie MacMaster, Cowboy Junkies twice, the JamGrass festival with Yonder Mountain String Band, Leo Kottke and David Grisman, and Widespread Panic twice, with Ben Harper opening one day (Ben is the man). I go to Cowboy Junkies whenver possible; they are one of my favorite bands, and I do some work for them, so that works out.

I also love outspoken women's music, like Ani DiFranco, whom I've been catching since 94, Natalie Merchant-both solo and with 10,000 Maniacs, and Tori Amos (listening to her sing Me and a Gun live is a religious experience). Basically, I am a huge music freak.

As for Tara and Willow, I'd see Tara going to Tori Amos or something similar. Given her family history and where she was, I doubt she went to concerts till she got to college. Willow could be anyone. I guess technically Oz's band might have been her first. I could see her at a Pearl Jam show though.

My first concert was Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was 21. It was interesting to see all the mothers with their 14 year old kids, and the people smoking pot all around them. That's my main memory.

Oh wow! My first concert was get this, Queen! I was 16 and they played Madison Square Garden! I went with my friends by subway into the big city! I felt so grown up!

Willow and Tara both adore Melissa Etheridge's sexy, sultry heated voice! I can see them enjoying her at an outdoor by the beach concert, like the one I went to at Jones Beach in NY years ago, under the stars, rocking to the music in each other's arms, smoochies when the mood strikes! Oh yes!

Bob, just wanted to say that I am thinking about you and your kittie. We said prayers for you today. You are a very sweet man Bob. I was very touched by how you wanted to help your baby spend her days. Sending you good vibes.

Well since im a hardcore 80s music fan, id have to say it was the Go Gos at the Greek theater in Berkeley...They were awesome and i fell in love with Belinda, Jane, Gina Charlotte and Kathy...Saw them again at the San Jose fairgrounds..

Have to say second fav was seeing Boy George and Culture Club in SF...The boy is such a cool person..My fav line of his at the concert was "the last time i was in San Francisco, they told me i was sexless, but i just want you to know i can tumble" and he broke into Ill Tumble for Ya..

[b:c6b2d9d8b1] First concert:[/b:c6b2d9d8b1] 1st year University -- got body-checked by a friend while on my way to an on-campus film fest. She insisted that I had to come with her to the small, dingy University bar to see some new singer. I had never heard of her but relented when she offered to front the $6 ticket price. Turned out to be [b:c6b2d9d8b1] Sarah McLachlin [/b:c6b2d9d8b1] doing her first tour for [i:c6b2d9d8b1] Vox[/i:c6b2d9d8b1]. I thought her singing was fab but she was often self-conscious and shy (faced away from the audience lots) and [i:c6b2d9d8b1] really[/i:c6b2d9d8b1] could not dance -- at all. I saw Sarah's 2 other campus concerts over the next year but she never could pull off moving rhythmically when not singing. By the third concert, however, she had found a way to hide it -- the patented hold-onto-the-mike-while-swaying technique. She's gotten better over time but she still uses it to this day. I still chuckle when I see her grab the microphone and start to move.

As for real concert (in a concert hall) -- [b:c6b2d9d8b1] Sandra Bernhard's [i:c6b2d9d8b1] Without You I'm Nothing [/i:c6b2d9d8b1] [/b:c6b2d9d8b1] tour. Totally Fantabulous.

[b:c6b2d9d8b1] Willow's First Concert[/b:c6b2d9d8b1]: Her parents dragged her to some celebrated Klezmer band over from Israel. www.tepel.org/articles/wh...ticle.html

[b:c6b2d9d8b1] Tara's First Concert [/b:c6b2d9d8b1]: She would have fit in so well during the ambisexual New Wave but I'm thinking Tara would have gone to her first concert on her own, during her 1st year at Sunnydale. It was free and put on by the Music faculty. Something not mainstream, more naturalistic/tonal, engendering a visceral reaction without any real lyrics e.g. throat-singing or latin-esqe Gregorian chanting. But I'm very sure she has [i:c6b2d9d8b1] Hole [/i:c6b2d9d8b1] on the CD player at home.

willows first concert - I can see her as kinda into alternative rock, maybe a Weezer concert with Oz...

Tara - heh, I just had a vision of Tara dragging Willow along to a Abba revival concert.....

my first? Wet Wet Wet in '95. Still think I have a little crush on Marti Pellow (the lead singer) after that concert.
but nothing will ever match the Natalie Merchant concert I went to at the beginning of the year. that lady is AWESOME.

[b:f119bc332e]Arafel[/b:f119bc332e], you wouldn't happen to need an assistant by any chance? I live in Ireland, though, the commute might be a bit tough. [img:f119bc332e]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/wink2.gif[/img:f119bc332e]

Well, this has been a good year for concerts as I got to see my darling [b:f119bc332e]Indigo Girls[/b:f119bc332e] twice this year. [img:f119bc332e]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/revolve.gif[/img:f119bc332e] Have only seen them 7 times in all, and yes they have only played here 7 times.

Other concerts this year - Blind Boys of Alabama, Pina, Luka Bloom, Gemma Hayes, Powderfinger, Altan, Afro Celt Sound System, Damien Rice, Harlem Gospel Choir, Kila, Sinead O'Connor, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. And I'm sure I'm leaving out a few. Can you tell I adore music? [img:f119bc332e]http://homepage.eircom.net/~mollyig/winkgreen.gif[/img:f119bc332e]

Tara's mother brought her to see Joni Mitchell, when she was a kid. Willow wasn't allowed to go to concerts as Sheila thinks music is an unhealthy interest (she strikes me as being mad that way).

Being an absolute music junkie I felt the need to add my voice to this thread. First concert I went to was Eurythmics. Annie Lennox was just awesome in concert. Willow and Tara I think would listen to Indigo Girls, Ani Difranco, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos and of course Joni Mitchell. I also want to be Arafels assistant I'm so jealous of all the bands she's seen!

I don't know if there are any Orlando Kittens on this board, but if there are, I'm here to offer some helpful information.

Basketball season is rearing its ugly head, once again. Which means - pre-empted programming. So to anyone depending on WRBW UPN-65 for their Buffy needs, I'm posting a list of all this season's Magic games that will interupt your regularly scheduled Tuesday nights.

December 10
January 21
February 11
March 11
April 1

Buffy will not be on these nights. And in compliance with the network's requirements, they will air the following weekend. I will post a schedule of the actual air dates and times, once our scatter-brained programming director finally gets it together.

Also, please do not write in to the station or the network about it. There is nothing anyone can do about it. It sucks, I hate it too -- more than you, believe me. But contracts with the Magic have been signed for three more years and an angry letter or phone call to the station won't do any good.

Let me know if this will be of use to anyone. If not, Mods - feel free to shut me down.

Hothouse Flowers, I think, when I was still at school and waistcoats were in. Heh. They were great. But I think I smelled of patchouli for days afterwards.

I'm really not sure what kind of music Willow and/or Tara would haul themselves out to see. I think Willow only really liked Dingoes because Oz played in the band. Honestly, I think her music tastes are probably very sober and straight laced. And I think she avoided concerts when she was at school because they would have interefered with her homework. ;)

As for Tara, I suspect that she's probably a little more clued into music than Willow. I hate to say it, but she probably does like female solo artists, sigh. Of a lesbian nature. More sighing. She seems a bit crunchy that way, god love her. And I'm sure she's only too willing to teach Willow all about her personal tastes. In uh, music. ;)

Bros. Yes, I had Grolsch bottle tops on my shoes. Yes, I had a James Dean belt buckle. We don't need to mention it again. Okay?

Willow certainly seemed to like Blink 182 when she was shaking and shimmying it off at the Bronze.

And I'll have to add my voice of approval to those saying Tori Amos for Tara.

Ok, my first concert was the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Meadowbrook. Arthur Fiedler was the guest conductor. My dad took me & I loved it. I still love most classical music.

My first non-classical concert was by an artist who is no longer alive & will not be named. I liked the music then & still like most of it now. (NO! it is NOT "pelvis"!)

As to which concerts W&T would have seen, I cannot add anything to those wonderful suggestions already given.

Hmmm....I really can't tell you the actual first concert I went to. I'm sure it wasn't anything really popular...but my dad's a music minister and he was in school when I was born...so I know I've been going to concerts since I was little. First concert I wanted to see....don't laugh I'm a classical music buff....The Canadian Brass. These guys are hilarious....not to mention awesome musicians. Now my all time favorite concert so far....No Doubt on their Tragic Kingdom tour!!!

As for W/T I could totally see them getting into No Doubt grrl power and all!!!

my first concert, that i remember, was Cool and the Gang. I was sitting on my dads lap by the loudspeakers and i think of him everytime i hear *jungle boogie* (which is cool now cause of pulp fiction and all). hehe... my mum took me to the ballet all the time though that's not really a concert is it?

keep in mind no one cool and famous ever came to puerto rico (except meatloaf :) ). i mean, even though we were rocking to nirvana and stuff in high school almost everyone i knew was at the REO Speedwagon concert and the Chicago concert and christopher cross, etc... that's the kind of music that came to PR. that and a lot of pot smoking reggae bands that i never cared for. i did go to a peter noone concert with my mum once. it was hilarious! i knew all the song.

then madonna came in like '91 and it was a near riot. michael jackson was supposed to come and that whole child abuse thing started and he cancelled....

as for w/t's first concerts: i'd agree that Will's mom would have taken her to the symphony or something cultured like that as a child.

as for tara i'd say her first concert was in sunnydale, at the Bronze. she didn't look like she got out much in high school unless it was one of those times after her mums death that she went crazy and stayed out all night.

editing to add: my favorite band ever, sleater kinney, will be here in concert on my birthday (yay) and i cannot wait to see them! i see them ever single year and i just love them... sigh, i've been listening to their new album all day and night.

OK another cultural experience I've yet to sample. never been to a concert..have crowd issues. But I am in such a good mood I'll give it a try

Tara - Loreena Mckennitt in her early touring years...

Willow - Sara M. seems to be a good fit especially after w/t were together.

But of course they'd go to every classical concert there was

Missy

just had a strange vision of Willow and Tara dancing to "The Mummer's Dance". mmm nice!

But I wanted to drop by and say how cute this thread is and people's first concerts. Mine is oh so very lesbian, Indigo Girls. Irony is I was kind of in the closet and I went with my straight suitemates. I think they were the only straight people there hee. I'd never seen so many lesbians in my life. It was fun.

Have fun today kitties, all my love.. now if I can stay awake at work :p

I think Willow's primary musical influence was, like many teenage girls, her best friend -- Buffy. They liked the same music, swapped CDs and Willow was probably always downloading songs for Buffy and Xander and burning them CDs. And I think Buffy was able to get Willow to go to many concerts just as she was able to get Willow to go to the Bronze on many many an occasion. As for Willow's first concert (this is rather unimaginative since Willow and Buffy seem to always have the poster hanging somewhere) but I would guess String Cheese Incident.

Tara's primary musical influence would have been her mother's extensive record collection. I'm guessing Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Gracie Slick, Joni, old Bonnie Raitt. Which led Tara to delve deeper into the blues -- traditional and contemporary, especially the women artists. I see Tara as a kindred spirit to a Susan Tedeschi or Jonny Lang, maybe Beth Hart. (Though I totally see her digging Hole -- her guilty pleasure.) I think Tara's first concert was at McCabe's Guitar Shop, an un-announced all accoustic Bonnie Raitt concert, which is why Tara put a McCabe's poster up at the Magic Box.

As for my first concert . . . well, in honor of [b:bbf99a4927] Autumn[/b:bbf99a4927] and [b:bbf99a4927] friskylez[/b:bbf99a4927] I'm going to tell the truth: I [i:bbf99a4927] wanted[/i:bbf99a4927] my first concert to be Elton John's Yellow Brick Road Tour (yes, Lindy, it's true -- I [i:bbf99a4927] wanted[/i:bbf99a4927] to go) b/c I had a huge crush on Barbara Cooper aka Valerie Bertinelli on One Day at a Time and she loved Elton and I loved Elton and I was just sure I would see her there. But alas my first 3 concerts ended up being: Alice Cooper (Billion $$ Babies), John Denver (Rocky Mtn High) and Heart (Dreamboat Annie / Little Queen). All of them at Red Rocks long long before it was despoiled by John Tesh.

I never did make it to see Sir Elton.

Wow this is fun.

First concert. The Who, eigth row. I couldn't hear a damn thing for days.

Let's see I also saw the Rolling Stones, They Might Be Giants, Too Much Joy twice, had a blast at Lilith Fair (the men's restrooms were so empty!), front row of Sinad O'Connor (now that was a great show!), Fishbone, Faith No More when they were nobodies, Living Color, Sting more times than I can remember, was going to go see Pantera till I found out what racists they were, Lyle Lovette, Shawn Colvin twice, Indigo Girls, Jewel, Allyson Krause, Edgar Winter, Ipso Facto, Peter Gabriel, and more I am sure but can't remember. Was going to go see Rush (as in Geddy Lee, not Limbaugh!) but didn't get tickets in time.

Willow and Tara's first? Well I don't know, I am sure Tara's was during her first year at Sunnydale.

I am sure her and Willow spent some great bounding time sitting on the lawn of some free concert in the park. Of course they went and saw Sarah.

This is so not me, but the tickets were free, and I was 15. My first concert was Amy Grant. The Christian singer. Sigh.

Willow and Tara's first concerts...that's really tough. Maybe for Willow, that band from the Muppets?

For Tara, though, I'm thinking Michigan Women's Festival. She could take Willow. They could share a tent. :)
