Its Rings N Things Tuesday, Ms. Kitty Fantastico!

Postby Zahir al Daoud » Tue Aug 06, 2002 6:13 am

Hi everyone! Wow, its been ages since I did a daily thread.

I'm assuming many folks here saw [i:3352922702]Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring[/i:3352922702], which comes out on video today. Woo hoo! Personally I enjoyed it immensely. And I'm soooooo looking forward to [i:3352922702]The Two Towers[/i:3352922702] (although the wild rumors about it seem fairly silly to moi).

Rings are on my mind, because I just placed an engagement ring on my girlfriend's finger. (She loved LOTR btw).

So I have three questions. (1) What did various Kittens think of the film and book? (2) How do you think Willow and Tara reacted to same? (3) What kind of wedding rings do you they would exchange?

confession from an insane kitten freak: I am absolutely terrified of hobits. hence, i refuse to read the books or see the films..... please dont hate me for it.
and i somehow think tara and willow would have some groovy ancient celtic rings of a sort....peace.

This is totally off topic but being the basketball fan that I am, especially the Los Angeles Lakers and Sparks I would just like to say that the basketball will never be the same. Chick we will miss you. God must have needed you to call the games for him.

the fridge is closed, the eggs are cooling, the butters getting hard, the jellos is giggling and the lights are out in the booth.
God speed Chick, we will miss you so.

The guy who played Timmy on 'Passions,' Josh Ryan Evans, died last night. He was only 20 years old. www.eonline.com/News/firstlook.html
That just really sucks.

And I have no interest in LoTR, not really.

Haven't seen LoTR, and honestly, I don't have any wish to. Can't stand Sean Bean you see. He looks like he doesn't wash.

And I will take a firm stance and vote for "things", if that's okay. :)

Well Zahir, I'm with you 100% on this one. I absolutely loved LOTR. My partner is picking up the DVD today that I had pre-ordered and we'll be having dinner and a movie at home this evening.

As for rings, I like to think Willow and Tara would get rings that look like the ones Angela and I got 18 years ago. They're gold with an antique finish and look like oak leaves circling on each other.

And congratulations to you and your fiance!!! That's wonderful news.

i LOVE lord of the rings. i read it every year. as for the movie, they did an excellent job casting Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, she's amazing. i actually just got a LoTR poster free in the mail today!!! i'm so excited about the DVD coming it- it has previews of the Two Towers on it as well. does anyone know who has been cast as owyn?? i'm so scared of the Marshes in the next movie, i'm sure they'll be really creepy.

as for w and t's rings, i like to think they might be like the ones i want- they're silver and say "vous et rien autre" on them.

Heh heh heh. When the first movie came out a whole horde of people I know online simply assumed Eowyn had been cut and that Arwen was taking her place (a very strange idea when you think about it). They are quite wrong. I've seen pics of the actress (she's blonde--no surprise there) but don't recognize her. I do believe she'll be taking the place of her brothers in the story, though. This is the 21st century--our elvish princesses ride into battle with their men thank you very much!

And when Galadriel was "tempted" by the One Ring was one of my favorite parts. Her words ("I pass the test! I shall diminish. I shall go west. And remain Galadriel.") really hit me for some reason. Helped drive home (again) that this ring is EVIL.

I'm sooooooo looking forward to [i:5872b35676]The Two Towers[/i:5872b35676] (and isn't it cool to see Christofer Lee getting a lot of work again?)

(I'm kinda hoping for simple gold bands with our birthstones on them for me and my lady)

I did enjoy the LoTR movie, and am also looking forward to the next one. The movie finally made me read the books, because all my friends know that I like fantasy/sci-fi, and when the movie came out, ceaselessly made fun of me for being the ONLY one who had not read the books.

I am glad that Eowyn is being kept in the movie. If I remember correctly, though, she wasn't an elf.

Also, I can't wait to see what they do with Ents.

Hell. I can't believe Josh Ryan Evans is dead. Fuck.

I got home early from work and just as I sat down to check my email, I heard it on the news. The wheels in my brain just spun for a minute. Because the character he plays, Timmy, just died on the show [i:6c08e0425d] yesterday[/i:6c08e0425d]. For some reason, for a second, I thought, "Pfffft, that's not news. Everyone knows Timmy's dead. Tabitha will just make a new Timmy, like she always does. Why is this on the news?"

I don't know what to say. Josh is dead. Timmy is dead. There's no hope, you know?

I'm just in shock. (Please, please, please feel free to make fun of me, but I [i:6c08e0425d] cried[/i:6c08e0425d].)

I know not a lot of people are into [i:6c08e0425d] Passions[/i:6c08e0425d] and it doesn't have great ratings. I know people mock it, and think it's silly. (Which it definitely is. It's ridiculous. And no one mocks it more than fans, trust me.) But it has a fiercely loyal fan base. (Sound familiar?)

Josh, you will be missed.

NOOOOO!!!!!

I've been trying to avoid LOTR all day as I'm determined not to buy it. Darn daily thread.

LOTR and the Bible are the only two books every member of my immediate family has read. Absolute compulsory reading as far as my father is concerned. And I have loved it every single time I've read it. (Well not so much the bible as arguements over that led to me spending most of my time during religious education standing outside the door of the classroom.) But I will not buy this edition of the DVD. *tries desperately to convince herself*. I will wait until November when the 4 disc edition comes out. The one that contains more than the web stuff and promo for the Twin Towers that I've already seen. Honestly, I'm not going to go out and buy this tomorrow. :shy

Don't let your hatred of Sean Bean put you off, the man makes my skin crawl but I suffered because I so wanted to see this movie.

I had written a long post in reply but my screen froze and I had to restart and lost it all, so here is the short version...

Don't let anything put you off this film. It's a must see movie.

I've not read the books and now I really want to, but I don't want to spoil the movies as it was great to be there and not know what was going on, also not to be sitting there saying 'oh they didn't do this or they skipped this bit'. I may read each book after each movie so I guess I'm two behind now. Bummer how RL gets in the way sometimes. At this rate I'll be rerading them after year three.

If you love all things New Zealand (it was filmed there!) and LOTR then you must look at this site. 'New Zealand - Home of Middle Earth'. They have a beautiful presentation (you'll need Flash 5 to see it. If you don't have it get it as it's amazing to see) Not only that, it's narration is done by Lucy Lawless. I melt every time I hear her Kiwi accent.

www.purenz.com/?98B94218-...2A52EAFCE1

We have pre-ordered the big bumper special edition DVD set with bookends that comes out in November but I'm sure this weekend we will be renting it and maybe a few times more until it comes out.

Enjoy.

Chino, you love it this much and you haven't even read the book. You're in for a treat. It's pure excercise for the imagination. I think it's a given that any film you see of any book you've read just doesn't meet your expectations. Nothing quite like the inside of your own mind.

The movie was beautiful. But I need to see it again, when I saw it in Korea, the Elvish was not subtitled in English so I missed a little bit of the dialogue. I just reread all the books a year ago in anticipation of the movies coming out. Can't wait for the Two Towers!!

And Congratulations on your engagement, Zahir!!

I first read LOTR when I was a kid, and I loved it. Just reread it last year before seeing the movie, and I could swear it got even better. (And I even saw the movie twice).

And my brain may still be waterlogged, since I've just been swimming, but Star Pixie: I think the actress playing Eowyn is Miranda Otto. From what I've seen of the previews, she looks like she fits the role.

Now. As for W/T. I'll bet they read the books together before watching the movie. And then when they saw it, Willow got in trouble for making a comment about how hot Arwen is. Though I'm sure we can all guess how she made up for it afterwards. :)

Finally... Zahir: Congratulations! *throwing of confetti*

As much of a HUGE Tolkien fan as I am, I can't get excited about the video release today.

Two reasons, really - A, I have no money, and B, the EXTENDED EDITION comes out in November. THAT one I want to see...

Ruth, if your aversion to Sean Bean is that strong, here's a hint...
[b:ac21244577] SPOILERS! [/b:ac21244577]
****** He's only in the first movie. Dies a big ugly death with arrows sticking out of him and all. You can see the other two without much (or likely any) Bean-age. *****
[b:ac21244577] END SPOILERS[/b:ac21244577]

As for Two Towers changes, readers of the books can rest assured that little much is changed. Eowyn is the same character, played well by Miranda Otto, I understand. Arwen's role isn't as big as some think.

And Elrond's sons do appear.

I'll leave it at that...

Sheridan, much as I love LOTR, I must admit methinks [i:8cb3e21698]The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant[/i:8cb3e21698] are actually better (certainly many times more adult). And both of them derive from myth, and from Wagner's Ring Cycle.

Everyone--A thousand thanks for your wishes! I had given up on ever getting married, pretty much assuming I was one of those fate to spend the rest of his life alone. Then, about three years ago, I met my lady online. We didn't physically meet for over a year. Then she moved up here to LA, in the same apartment building even!

Forgive the babbling. I'm actually misting up a bit. This is a joyful thing, a glorious surprise life has given. She completes me.

Thanks for listening.

Hello, friendly friend friends! Just got back from 6 weeks in China, and I of course had to see what was hapening over here.... Alright, to actually be on topic, I thought the movie was stunning, though I was never too fond of the books... I saw it twice, so it must have been good, right? I NEVER waste money... :) Really, though, a great movie mostly for the setting.
