Postby drlloyd11 » Thu Jun 27, 2002 5:10 am

ahh, its hot , muggy, I'm behind scedule, and wanting to just go take a nap at 11AM. It must be summer in Boston..
So, for like the 20th time, someone asked me what my kitten shirt meant, and I'm getting pretty good at narrowing the answer down.. I have them in catagories,,
1)Factual
"Its about this show Buffy and there are these two cool characters named willow and tara who are witches and are in love with each other and its really cool and super romantic and the creator is now a big jerk"...This takes about 70 seconds, longer if the person I am explaining to actually paying attention past the mention of "Buffy"
2)When surronded by BTVS fans
"Its the Kitten board shirt"... followed by a long serious of personal questions with the assumption I am going to kill them for mentioning SDK
3)when on the T, and asked by scary ass people.
"Um, its a tv show thing"
4)My obnoxious neighbors
"Its a gay thing! just go away! dammit! and take the dog"

Ok, I would love to hear anyones annecdotes about this. Just to know I am not the *only* person to wear the shirt. :)
Otherwise, having been playing neverwinter nights, and dreaming up some huge "buffy" module for it. Big fun game, if long and involved. Love to hear from anyone up for some multiplayer?
Ok, have a nice day kids..

I've had to explain the shirt before. I have even been asked if it's something to do with animals, lesbians and pro-life :D At least the middle part is right. Normally I tell people it is the shirt from a posting board I am on and it's all to do with Willow and Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer...by now the person is bored and has wandered off.

Reminds me of when I was wearing a [i:ff6cfc1d98] Red Dwarf[/i:ff6cfc1d98] shirt in L.A. and someone asked me if it was a band. For whatever reason, I said, "Yeah! Not much airplay over here, but they're [i:ff6cfc1d98] huge[/i:ff6cfc1d98] in England!"

I guess my geek street cred had expired at that point...

I'm a tshirt freak, so I'm always getting asked to explain my shirts. Most of them are for bands (11 Indigo Girls tshirts heh heh!), but some I bought because they're just a tad weird.

Am on leave at the moment, so had a nice relaxing afternoon watching Wimbledon and eating strawberries (as you do!)

I wear my kitten shirt when I'm out running errands, just to see if any attractive women react to the middle picture. Or, better, actually know about the Kitten board. It's kind of a way to flirt without putting forth any effort. I can't wear it to work, though. Some of my clients would see the picture of the two women holding hands, or the coat hanger with a line through it (a symbol that's also been used by the pro-choice movement), and fire me on the spot.

This past Monday, I had a Kinko's cashier tell me the shirt was cute. She was [i:e21ae2119e] so[/i:e21ae2119e] not my type, but I started to explain what the shirt was about anyway. She was not comprehending what I was telling her. I think she was just a slow straight woman who liked cats.

If you look at the board home page froggyfrog.com/kitten you will see all kinds of goodies, including how to get the shirt.

Here's the direct link to the cafepress kitty store

I wore the shirt to school once and my teachers sent me to the principals office! He had to talk to me about "why it is innapropriate to be advertizing pro-life, and homosexuality. Or sexuality in general." I got so pissed off. But on the up-side, it did get me a date for the next dance, her name is (believe this or not) Tara. I asked her if I was dreaming when she asked me. She looked really confused but thought it was funny. We had a great time and since then, I have bought her a shirt of her very own! Love's a funny thing! :love

Once upon a time, when I was both a fan of [i:27e90faf5a] BtVS[/i:27e90faf5a] and a daily lurker at TWoP, I used to wear their [i:27e90faf5a] BtVS[/i:27e90faf5a] shirt. It said "Vampire Stabbin' Demon Stompin' Recap Goodness" or some such thing on the back.

Okay, so this guy comes up to me and starts talking about Jesus and God and stuff. He just [i:27e90faf5a] knows[/i:27e90faf5a] I'm on board with him because my shirt is all about the demon stompin'. I guess he didn't bother to read the other two bits.

I politely attempt to distance myself from him but he won't hear of it, because he can tell I'm a demon-stomper. He's a demon-stomper, too, and he wants me to join him.

I left the encounter shaking my head and mumbling something I rarely did in those days, "Jeez, it's just a [i:27e90faf5a] TV show[/i:27e90faf5a]..." :rolleyes

Poor guy will have a coniption fit if he ever sees me in a Kitten t-shirt. :eek

This is totally off topic but I need Drloyd's help....Diana and I are planning on coming to Boston in a couple of weeks on holiday. Know any decent places to stay that are near the Mohegan Sun Casino? If this needs to be moved, mods, please feel free to do so. I just didn't have any clue what thread to put this in.

I recently decided to take the bull by the horns (not quite sure what bulls have to do with it but you know...) and wear my shirt around the house. Naturally, my mum asked me what the significance of the symbols were, so I told her it was from an internet posting board and the name.

I think it went over her head.

Anyway, the next day my 8 year old neice asked me what the t-shirt meant and my mother ordered me to explain properly to her what it was about. So I did. About the internet posting board based on a tv show, blah blah blah.

Oddly enough, nobody seemed to get that I was talking about lesbians. Or Buffy. Or Willow and Tara. Or anything to do with the board at all.

And being English, my mum thought the symbol for the bad wardrobe was hilarious. Bless. I think she's still pondering the girls holding hands bit. Heh. ;)

Yeah, I am recycling the entire current issue of 'Dreamwatch'. But anyway, in the new issue they have an interview with Gillian , and she says she will be doing a play in London later this year. I haven't heard of the play (it's claled 'What the Night is For' and it's by soeone called Michael Weller), but she mentions that the run will start this October. I will definitely go to see it if I can get tickets, cause I've always loved her work.
I knew the colonisation of the London stage by US stars would lead to someone good appearing eventually...

Yeah, I am planning on going over to the UK this fall to see Gillian's play. I think her official website should have details on it soon (gaws.ao.net).

Ought to be a lot of fun, it's been a while since I've been in London and always enjoy myself.

And I don't have a kitten shirt, but I do have a lot of shirts for the XF group I run the OBSSE. Last year at our gathering there were 100 people all wearing golf shirts that had our URL on them. We just told people we were a failed dot com running through the last of our venture capital. That seemed to work...

I have been bad, I still don't have a Kitten t-shirt. :( .
But none of you have EVER bought a Shadow-Earth one! :lol

I do have to explain my "Othordox Druid" one every once in a while and once when I was back at my home town someone gave grief for wearing my "Lilith Fair" t-shirt. Which was fine with me cause it reminded me why I was SO glad to move away from there!!!

Reminds me. When I was back at the U working one of the other profs came in to my office that I shared and she was introducing us all to this new student. She went down the line saying this is so-and-so and their research interests are blah blah blah, and she got to me and said "and this is Tim. He has the best T-shirts!". Nice to know I got hired their not for my academic skills but my killer fashion sense of jeans and a t-shirt!

I don't even remember what t-shirt she was thinking of.

The NY Power keep losing. That blows.
I'm going to get a "chicks dig me" shirt for my birthday, either that or a "Chick Power" shirt. I went to Tent and Trails today for carribiners and ended up spending over $100 on things. Weeeee. . . .work things are fun.
This girl I work with also watches Buffy so I got to rant over season six at the bar after work the other night.

Postby Rally » Thu Jun 27, 2002 10:25 am

So I have worn my shirt around, never really been asked about it, but ya know it's not always a good idea to approach evil people on the street and ask stupid questions.

<rant>

At any rate, so been in the corporate world for a while now, been through a lot of downsizing, and reorganizations. They are usually quite boring for those not in management or those being laid off. I have been through the restructuring, the bringing in of new management teams, the boredom of slide presentations and snappy slogans dreamed up by marketing team.

I had to go through another one today. To give you an example of the activities that go on, for those of you who have never worked for a large company. Basically haul our asses to work at 7:30 in the morning, to catch a bus to the off site location of the event. In this case it was the Technology Museum in downtown San Jose. Have a continental breakfast while our 400 some employees filter in to learn our future for the next supposed 18 months.

We then sit through 2 plus hours of powerpoint slides, video presentations and rah rah speeches from management. The good news, they tell us, only 10 people lost their jobs, they of course were displaced yesterday and escorted out of the building. There is a lot crap about vision statements and innovation and how we are leaders in technology etc. We get little folders and sunglasses and of course pizza for lunch when we return to the office.

Tomorrow we will "drill down" deeper into the new structure of our organization, which of course includes another layer of management to the mix. Of course followed by another morale building lunch, this time a bbq.

So, what is the point of all this you ask. Well for the first time, I am finding myself effected by this reorganization. I found out before boarding the bus back to the office. My manager of just over year broke the news that he just received the day before. He lost 3 slots, he lost me to another group, he lost his admin and he lost a just vacated hardware slot.

This is a kind of a shock for me, and I still don't know how it is going to effect me or my job. I know I will have a new boss, new responsibilities, beyond that I have no clue.

I still have a job, but beyond that I just don't know. Anyhow, what I do know is I plan to get very drunk tonight and try not to think about what the hell I am going to be doing come Monday morning.

</end rant>

Rally,

That really sucks.

I was downsized (that is the nice way to say fired) in September. Before that I watched 4 reorgs, was laid off in April only to get a call five days later from my boss to say I was on the wrong list, come back.

I drove to one of those reorgs through the Chicago snow in my 11 year old Ford with one working windshield wipper just have smoke blown up my ass in December of 2001. I shoulda just gone home instead.

I hate the corporate world. I hate academia. But I hate not working even more.

On the bright side I just had an interview today! Yeah! Got a job teaching at nights last week! Yeah! and I still have my new book contract! Yeah again.

Oh and Joss is still not getting an Emmy for OMWF! Yeah!

So I might have 3 jobs by the end of next week! Wierd.

sorry to hear that Rally- i will think happy thoughts for you.

i figure, being trapped in slave labor as a grad student, i will not even think about getting a real job for like 4 more years, assumming they are stupid enough to give me a phd. and then i will drop out of research and open a coffee shop that has a greenhouse, so people can get coffee and ice cream and look at plants.

Rally - I haven't been through a restructure from the same perspective you have, but I can sympathize. I work in the tech industry and when we restructured I was put out of a job. I was lucky that they wanted to keep me as a worker, so they were able to switch me to another open position, but it isn't any fun! I was also lucky in that my new boss was one that I had worked with before and we got along well. The downside is I still have an hour to an hour and a half commute, but I still have a job.

I wish you the best of luck! :)

As for tshirts, most of mine are theatre or work ones so I don't get many questions. *laugh*

Have a good day! Hugs to all the kitties

Hhhmm maybe i should buy a t shirt, it might be a easier way to come out as bi, then to actully tell them, i could use it as a starting point into the conversation instead of my last attempt of saying in the middle of macdonalds to a table of my friends while talking bout people we'd have (in the having way!) i'd have Alyson Hannigan any day. Needless to say that wasn't the best way to start of that conversation!

Hi, I figured most of you would read this thread. Sorry if it's OT, but I need help. It's about a movie I'm desperately trying to see, and maybe it'll never come to Europe.
But I found out a minute ago, it'll be screened in the USA at 10:20AM-11:45AM, Friday, Jun 28, sorry I don't know the time zone or the channel, I only got this link:

www.gist.com/tv/progdesc....4&lnk=imdb

Here's the question, could someone please, for the love of every deity I can think of, tape this movie????
The name is "The Price of Milk", starring Danielle Cormack and Karl Urban (who were both in "Xena"). I'm really desperate about this, and if someone really could tape this, I'm sure we can arrange something...

Thanks in advance and now on to something completly different: The Daily Thread

Have a great day :)

It's a lazy birthday Thursday, MKF.

And I'm having a nice one. Got taken out for a yummy lunch at Rockin' Baja Lobster, mmm. And I've gotten some really cool presents, too. My girlfriend got me a great set of rune stones inscribed on rose quartz pieces (I've been coveting such a set for ages). And funnily enough, my sister gave me her gift at lunch, which she got on her recent trip to Europe. It's a Buffy t-shirt she picked up in London. Ha ha. It's actually cute, maybe I'll wear it. Just not in public.

Maybe I'll just paint a big red circle with a slash line through it and write "got Tara?" on the back in something approximating a yellow crayon. ;)

Edited to add: oh yeah, and did I mention that I got a job yesterday? Adulthood. The other, other white meat.

Rally

I can't say I know how this feels. I work in a highly competitive industry dominated by corporations that are addicted to growth, but so far, all the downsizing is being done by our competitors. I console myself by saying that if they do it in the area I work in, my company will be around to take some extra people on.

Anyway, Rally, if you show even a tenth of the energy and talent at work that you show with your creations that find their way onto this Board, the employer that gets rid of you is a complete fool.

PS: I don't care what the Mods think, I [b:6288c34189] still[/b:6288c34189] want to see another "Spike's Xylophone" avatar. xx Bagheera

Arg. I hate fanfiction.net. I've been trying to get caught up on some fic, but it just keeps screwing up. Arg. Meanwhile, I've been playing guitar a lot lately, as just starting out on summer vacation. And lemme tell ya, Blink 182 songs sound really dumb on acoustic guitars. Maybe I should get an electric.

I don't have a shirt yet either, but I just looked at them and they look really cute and now I'm going to have to buy one. :)

I can't seem to shake my jet lag. It's been a week and I'm still getting tired in the middle of the day, and not because I'm not getting sleep, because I am. And Korea's only 5 hours earlier than Hawaii (but tomorrow). I can't imagine what will happen when I get back to Chicago and it's 14 hours earlier! Only 3 weeks and 2 days until I go home. I'm gonna miss Korea :(
