[b:3af0708b9b] message by xita[/b:3af0708b9b]
[b:3af0708b9b] This thread is not for a campaigns, however, if you do want to send a bigger message to ME [/b:3af0708b9b] then let us get together to talk about it. Now, I don't really want to talk about the details on the board, hello certain lurker, ;) however if you send me your user name on the board in an email, [b:3af0708b9b] xita@xita.org[/b:3af0708b9b] with the heading never forget, I will mail you using the mail you used to register on the board and include you in a private mailing list designed for those ready to really send a message. Again, if I don't recognize you, you are not getting in. Sorry!

This isn't a thread for campaigns. That won't help now; as we realised tonight. But I think for a lot of us it's going to be important to tell someone what Willow and Tara have meant to us, and the devastating effect that we feel this storyline has had on the gay community at large. Some well-penned words that let [b:3af0708b9b] someone[/b:3af0708b9b] involved know that we won't forget

If anyone has useful addresses or contacts, then here is the place to post them.

I'm just pasting the addresses given by relativegirl over in the spoiler thread.

ME gets the money to produce the show from 20th Century Fox and Fox licenses the show to UPN. So if you want to write the folks with the money (money = influence) write to Fox and UPN:

Los Angeles CA
90035.

Dawn Tarnofsky-Ostroff, President

Of course, if you want to go straight to the source:

Since its obvious ME thinks we are a bunch of nobodies, I suggest a better strategy...Write to those who they do listen to..
Not just Fox and UPN but any authors of glowing articles from salon, slate, MSN (that spoiler whore article), Advocate, etc..
But most importantly, mention with examples, what steve deknight said and how he acted.. The audio file rally has is our smoking gun on this... We must emphasize the cruelty and contempt Steve Deknight. has shown the fans.. These people will write articles about this if it makes a good story, and the way ME has acted makes for a good story.
This is our way, maybe not to get back Tara, but to let them know what they have done...

In the 'Article Help' thread I have requested info on Joss and the ME writers and their references to how the show is a 'feminist' show because I would like to submit something to both BUST and BITCH magazines.. But, I definately agree that getting things out there, to TV Guide, EW and the like will fall on more receptive ears... Besides, a nice backlash campaign is always fun.

I think Bust is a really good target since they have interviewed Joss before. I think quotes from Deknight will be really useful.. Also that Petrie quote is excellent. Anyone have these addies to all these places, suggestions are nice but addies are even better.

Remember this is about making people aware ... convince them of anything? nah.. they don't give a rat's ass about the fans.

How about Buffy sponsors? I am going to go through my tapes tonight and make a list of typical companies that advertise during BtVS, and then write to them as well. Bucks talk baby.
I bet those who place ads during Buffy will want to know how some fans feel and that the ratings are sliding for this ONCE beloved show. Gee, I wonder why?

I bet they would be interested to know as well, if say, I wouldn't be interested in the future of watching any Whedon or Noxon productions such as Firefly or whatever.
I am just guessing that the sponsors might want to know about our feelings.
I would be happy to get addresses of advertising sponsors if anyone has any. Please feel free to email me and to write to sponsors if you feel so moved.

Edited to add: CBS now owns UPN. Does anyone have any contact info over there?

I agree with writing, ME/BtVS got a tremendous amount of media play for an aging show by adding the W&T relationship

For a couple (W&T) whose relationship could only be presented in metaphor all these years, ME has chosen with aforethought to snuff one lesbian out via a bullet and leave her partner slattered in her very real blood

This from a show that has previously preferred to stake and "dust" their victims so as to not show blood

this "snuffing the lesbian for May sweeps"
ratings ploy, airing in the family hour to a targeted teen audience, adds yet one more footnote to the celluloid closet, and should be pointed out to the media
in a clear and rational way

Postby Banshee » Thu May 09, 2002 4:50 pm

I came across this tonight when I was looking for some buffy articles.. I had completely forgotten about it.. God, it was such a plea..

I've also put this in the daily:

from LesbiaNation

BUFFY SPOILERS ON TARGET

Looks like those Internet Buffy the Vampire Slayer spoilers were right on... target... for lack of a better word. That episode made me feel sick from the whole rape attempt to the shooting at the end.

LesbiaNation reader dr lloyd writes in, The writer of the episode [Tara] dies in was on internet radio, seriously it was vile. He joked about lesbians being after him, "hot girl-girl action", claimed the fans were over sensitive and revealed that they cut the love scenes for w/t [Willow/Tara] but left in the s/b [Spike/Buffy] rape uncut.

Well, Joss Whedon gave E! an interview in which he promised it would get much lighter next year. I hope so, because I dont know how much more of that I can take. He added, I need to give them [Buffy and Angel fans] what they need, not what they want. They need to have their hearts broken. They need to see change. They hated Oz, and then they hated that he left. These things are inevitable. If people are freaking out, I'm good. If people are going, Hmmm...well, that was fine, I'm fucked.

What is in the audio file? Is it the same thing Banshee mentions, about Steve having lesbians after him etc.

I'll do what I can. This takes me back to Xena days, not just with the Finale, but to the time when they banned 'The Way' ep and there was a big to-do about it also.

Good luck everyone.

Willow and Tara were not just positive role models for lesbians or questioning teens.

They were a positive representation of witches and Wicca. Now ME has only paid lipservic to Wicca with Willow and Tara, but they were two good witches. Now one is dead and the other is going to become a stereotype.

If you want to send more letters of disgust, involve some real Wicca.

The Witches' Voice, www.witchvox.com , is one of the largest witch/Wicca/Pagan sites out there.
Please contact, Peg Aloi at albion@witchvox.com to express you concerns that this once positive representation of witches has been twisted like so many others.

We have many good writers here. WitchVox takes essays, go here to find out, www.witchvox.com/words/ed...guide.html .

Another good place is AREN, the Alternative Religions Educational Network, at www.aren.org They used to be know as the Witch's Anti Defamation League.

Please consider these as other sources of help.

Boston Herald
"The Friday Rant" 5/10/02
by Mark A Perigard

Strip UPN's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" of good writing, clever dialogue, frightening menaces and believable characters and you are stuck with this season.

This week's episode was especially depressing, capped by the murder of Tara (AMBER BENSON) in the closing moment, another cruel twist in a cold season.

Over on FX, where the good seasons of "Buffy" are repeated, the show's writers brag during commercial breaks about how no character is safe on the show.

But examine that body count for a moment. The most significant character deaths - Jenny, Calendar, Joyce Summers and now Tara - are all women.

The show's two gay characters, Tara and high school jock Larry, both slain (ALYSON HANNIGAN's Willow does not count. Creator JOSS WHEDON told the Herald last year that she is at best bisexual)

The show's black characters? Kendra, Mr Trick and oh yeah, that guidance counselor who hung around for half an episode - all dead.

We knew that Buffy lived on a hellmouth.

Who knew she lived in Klan country?

I read it as his personal knowledge from a previous interview with Mr Whedon. In any case, its a major newspaper commenting on the racism, sexism and homophobia being presented in buffy and a perfect vehicle to be sending to the suits. This is bad publicity from a major market. The may not listen to fan letters but Studios do listen to major papers that are blasting them for these kinds of issues

and its the kind of media play that grabs other media outlets attention, and can be worked by organizations like GLAAD

Faxing that news piece to FOX and UPN makes them aware that it is getting read and heard

If you want to reference a story or news item, very early in Season 6 the editor in chief (Lisa Miya-Jervis) wrote the following regarding Willow & Tara:

[quote:23e05d6289][b:23e05d6289][i:23e05d6289]Quote:[/i:23e05d6289][/b:23e05d6289]
Buffy the Vampire Slayer's continued greatness
There are many reasons to love Joss Whedon and the smart, funny, wildly imaginative, sharp-as-a-tack series he created. But right now I am most happy about the way the new season has treated Sunnydale's resident lesbian couple: not with hype, not with avoidance, not with a sexualized, ratings-grabbing make-out session to titillate straight guysit just shows them going about their business. Like any couple, Willow and Tara worry about each other, share unguarded moments, kiss good morning, and snuggle up in bed at night. It sounds like a great big "duh!" to point that out, but when was the last time you saw lesbian affection treated like no big deal on prime time? [Pause here to ponder the great void.] I thought so. L.M.-J.
[/quote:23e05d6289]

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing Ms. Miya-Jervis ain't so thrilled anymore. To email Lisa Miya-Jervis directly: lisa@bitchmagazine.com

Also, the hard copy of the magazine currently on newstands (at least here in LA) has a short story by Susan Sabo entitled "Media's Fave New Message to Girls: Sex=Death" about media messages trying to scare teen girls away from sex.

Just thought that I would add a little fuel here. If anyone does want to contact Witchvox or another Wiccan organization, I would also suggest mentioning the whole Amy storyline from this season, how she encouraged wanton and irresponsible magick usage (I know, just a plot point.. ugh) and helped give the impression that a lot of Wiccans are power-mad and harmful individuals. To call Amy a Wiccan would be like calling my cat a tiger.. It's not quite the same thing. Ugh.. sorry.. ranting again. I just hate when my religion is maligned... we won't even start with Tara. It's just easier to take this into smaller bite sized pieces.

We Won't Forget - Addresses and Contacts for Letters

Postby relativegirl » Sun May 12, 2002 7:57 am

buffyfan in the spoiler forum just posted a reminder that "upfronts" start next week in NYC. "Upfronts" are where television networks announce their new fall schedules to do presentations for big advertisers lauding their wonderful fall lineups and amazing ratings. The networks do this in the hopes of getting the advertisers to buy blocks of advertising time on their shows "upfront".

So if anyone is interested in writing letters to the advertisers, the time to do it is NOW when the advertisers are deciding whether to spend their money on BtVS or some other show.

Also, if anyone is sending letters to UPN, it might be a good idea to say that you are aware of the upfronts and are sending letters to advertisers encouraging them to NOT buy time on BtVS.

Here's a list of the advertisers who sponsored SR as it was aired in the Los Angeles market:

Snapple (2 ads)
Neutrogena (2 ads)
Mitsubishi Motors (2 ads)
Johnson & Johnson Acuvue Contacts (sponsor of Villains promo)
McDonalds
John Frieda Sheer Blonde Shampoo
Powerade
Lowes Hardware
Hot Pockets
Mentos Breathe Mints
Burger King
Pepperidge Farm
Subway
VEET leg wax
Quaker State motor oil
Black Angus steak houses
Kit Kat Candy Bars
Kentucky Fried Chicken
State Fair Corn Dogs
Verizon Wireless

[b:0643f91566] kpmuse[/b:0643f91566] has posted the addresses for Snapple and Johnson & Johnson in this thread. As I locate addresses for the other advertisers I will add them here.

[b:0643f91566] Neutrogena[/b:0643f91566]
