Donation to Charity in the name of Willow and Tara

Postby xita » Mon Jul 15, 2002 8:20 am

So this idea was kicked around to me and I think this is something the whole kittenboard can get behind.

Lets find a Gay/Lesbian charity, preferably one that deals with abused
youth, and lets donate some money to them in Willow and Taras (not Aly and
Ambers, they have their own favorite charities) names.

Heres what I propose we do.
- We find a charity.
- I would prefer checks being written out directly to the charity. I can certainly collect that.
- We get some sort of online payment account for those that want to use it.
Those that dont can write checks. Lets avoid cash, to messy. This is a possibility only if we find someone trusted to handle it. I am not so sure I am for a variety of reasons.
- Anyway, so we need one or two someones in charge of handling the money.
This has to be someone we all trust.
- We set some dollar goal to reach. This should be based on what charity we
pick and what they might need. Maybe they need new computers, or clothes or
even a descent set of cooking supplies (if it is a group home kinda setting)
or even money just to help these kids get home or to a safe place. Just to
pull a number out of the air, $1500.00. That is about a buck each for every
registered member. Some will want to give more.
- We then present the charity with a nice big check!

Good for them, good for us, good for what Willow and Tara meant to us and to
the youth we want to help.

We will keep everyone updated on our progress. That way those who
contributed can see how the contributions are growing. I anyone wants to
tell the group what they sent in is their business, but this is not a
contest and who sent in what will be kept anonymous.

Great idea! You can count me in for a donation.

I volunteer for a local food bank. Many charities that deal directly with providing goods and services to those in need are local in nature. Others, like the Salvation Army, are widespread. Are we thinking about a local charity or something larger? The residence of whoever is chosen to deal with the money may impact on this issue, too.

Edited to add: For example, locally the Rainbow Resource Centre has a youth group component, providing information and referrals for counselling, legal help, etc. Is this the kind of organization we're talking about? Or, are we thinking more like a hospice or something?

Xita,

This is wonderful.

We can do something SO positive here and add something positive to the legacy of Willow and Tara.

I should point out again that these are in [b:39d27ecaa8] Willow and Tara's[/b:39d27ecaa8] names, not Aly or Amber. They have their own favorites.

Unless anyone objects, I'll set up a Pay Pal account later today to handle online donations.

You can be rest assured of 100% anonymity if you wish. This is too important.
Ill let you all know when it is ready.

Ok, we need a GLBT charity. Now, Ill admit my ignorance here, but I dont know of any. So suggestions right now would be FANTASTIC!

Local vs. National vs. International.
All have their good points. I would like something that would really help and get the word out that Willow and Tara meant something.

Wonderful idea. I'll definitely contribute.

Since we're such an international group of people, perhaps we should try to find an organization that's international. Or if that's too broad, find a national U.S. organization since Willow and Tara are (I guess ...) U.S. citizens. Unless of course there's a local organization that someone knows of that could really use our help. I guess that wasn't very helpful, was it :spin

Will kittens from outside the US have to send our donations in dollars? Cause it generally costs a fortune to cash international money orders etc. Just curious.
Also, I've suggested in the past that selling merchandise is a good way to raise money .. as well as to deprive ME of income.

The Kitten Board is an international community, but I would still prefer a local US -as that is the home country of the founders of this board and Willow and Tara- LGTB charity. I think we could mean more to a smaller charity.

*edit: No objections from me [b:51c99714ff] WebWarlock[/b:51c99714ff], you came up with the idea for raising some money for a LGTB charity, it's only fair if you collect it as well :p

I got the Pay Pal account set up, but I am not ready to start taking donations just yet.

Yeah Garfield, this idea has been floating around since early May. So it really is a Kitten idea. I think I was just most vocal then.

Pay Pal has been bought by Ebay. So maybe we ought to have a big Kitten Auction-athon with all the procedes going to our charity.

People have talked about unloading a bunch of BTVS stuff, this could be your chance. I have a ton of gamer stuff, including some BTVS stuff. I'll add that to the pot.

We just need a charity.

I would like one that deals with abused gay/lesbian teens or even just gay/lesbian teens. They need the most help and they are the ones whose letters Joss seemed to care about so much. Let's show them what really caring means.

If we pick a US-based charity, and if that charity is a true non-profit organization, then for those Kittens who have to pay US income taxes, the donation will be tax-deductible if the check is made out to the charity directly. If this is important for Kittens, maybe they should start saving some money now for when we are ready to make the donation and then write their check directly to the charity and just send whomever our "trusted accountant Kittens" are a note about the amount of the donation so that we can have a grand tally.

Also, based on my experience working with various community groups who wanted to start non-profit organizations, donations of working computer hardware is almost always welcome. And something tells me we may have some kittens who are cash poor but have more computer hardware laying around then they care to admit, so this might be a type of donation that is also welcome.

This is a great idea. Thank you Xita. I don't care who we donate the money to, as long as it is used for a good cause and helps someone less fortunate than a lot of us here. :)

That's a very cool idea! I am definately in. There are sooo many charities out there though. What about one for homosexual youth in foster care.....they're not treated very well in the system.

I have paypal and could write a check...which would be best, or does it matter? Gosh, I haven't been part of this group very long (well lurking a while) but I just love it here!!

What charities are out there? Some one mentioned PFLAG. I am partial to helping kids myself. So once we get a list going then we can start working out the details.

As you know XIta I am in.

Might I suggest the following to the group as a whole -

HRC - which has done tons of grass roots advocacy and has several programs geared to families.
www.hrc.org

The Trevor Project - Is based in California and specifically focuses on promoting tolerance. The Trevor Project is a nonprofit endeavor created by the makers of TREVOR to promote tolerance for gay and questioning youth, and to aid in suicide prevention among that group. Statistics have shown that gay teens are three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers, and The Trevor Project hopes, through its efforts, to prevent some of those tragedies from occurring.
check out there website:
www.thetrevorproject.org/project.html

PFLAG -- A national organization with hundreds of local chapters devoted to promoting the health and well-being of gay, lesbian and bisexual persons and their families and friends.
www.pflag.org/

My only concern would be going to an organization like the Salvation Army which has had a horrible record within the gay and lesbian community.

I also think it will be important - as Xita helped me realize - to not use this to support GLAAD since they have dropped the ball so hard on reporting any kind of disappointment at this or any of the other similar TV plots this season on shows they have been known to honor. i.e. All My Children as well as Buffy.

Although I do think once this project has been completed we should alert some level of either the gay press, GLAAD etc and send along with the info about the donation the wonderfully composed piece on the Cliche.

Beyond helping today's gay youth with the funds, I think getting the word out so the industry and the advertisers take notice can't hurt.

There's my two cents....
