Buffy the Musical, your thoughts?

Postby Dumbsaint » Tue Mar 26, 2002 1:46 am

The bizarre-o spoilers I've been reading (bad girl!) regarding the upcoming musical episode have got me wondering what it's going to be like, and I'm suddenly siezed with silly images of the characters singing all kinds of goofy songs to each other.
Anyone else care to accompany me to the funny place? Heh...
Me, I like the idea of Spike getting misty and singing to Buffy, a la 70's glam rock falsetto... oh, I dunno. Maybe... "I Honestly Love You."
Or I would *totally* love to see, just as Buffy realizes that she does indeed have feelings for Spike, the two of them doing a rendition of that song from The Sound of Music, "And there you are standing here loving me, whether or not you should..." Heh.
On a much sappier note, I can totally see Tara doing her rock-for-Willow thing, cheering up a crestfallen redhead with a sweet rendition of that ol' Charlie Chaplin song, "Smile." You know, "Smile, though your heart is aching, smile, even though it's breaking..."
I'm such a cheeseball. I love that song, though.
What about Giles and Xander in a bar, fed up with life's responsibilities, drinking each other under the table and singing "Yo, ho, yo, ho, a pirate's life for me"?
Okay, now I'm just being weird. But for some godawful reason, I can actually picture that.

I'm trying to think of something Xander might sing to Anya, or vice-versa. Anyone have any ideas? The sillier the better. I need a good laugh today.

Well, why stop at popular styles?

How 'bout Anya singing an opera aria (something like "Un bel di" from "Butterfly" )?

Or Xander, Anya and Buffy doing the "patter trio" from Gilbert & Sullivan's "Ruddigore" ("My eyes are fully open to my awful situation..." )?

Heehee! Okay, as long as newly-ressurected Buffy can be the operatic Brunhilde, with the furry shirt and viking helmet, and Pippi Longstockings-esque blonde braids.

Hehe, how bout Xander and Anya doing that 'oh yes, I remember it well' song. Ya know,
Xander: we met at nine
Anya: we met at eight
Xander: I was on time
Anya: no, you were late
Both: Yes, I remember it well!
That might be cute!

Or 'Let's Call the Whole thing Off'! Aw, not really, I love those guys!!

Giles and Xander singing the song from Jaws 'Show me the Way to go Home' what jolly drunken rantings!

And for some reason I can see Spike warbling 'Pretty Woman' at Buffy...thats just a real fun image in my head right now!

I personally cannot wait. I've always been a huge fan of musicals, and it sounds Joss' musical stylings are pretty close to my own preferences. I certainly enjoyed the short piece he did for Giles in Restless, and I'm looking forward to more of the same, or whatever, more different. I have so much confidence that it will be great, I don't think the episode will let me down.

Oh, I can't wait for the muscial!!! There's a part of me that wants to remain completely unspoiled for this and be totally surprised and ready to enjoy the episode fully. But then there's that evil part of me that just says, "Bring 'em on! I'm a spoiler ho!!!"

I too cannot wait for the musical thing.

How about Spike and Buffy: 'Witten In The Stars' from Aida. A type of Elton and Leann Rimes thing.

OR since Dawn was rebelious (Sp)? 'Real Wild Child.

I was thinking 'Sweet Cherry Pie' for Willow, then I remembered 'American Pie' so i don't think so. Maybe it would work if ther's a dream sequence/cameo from Faith. Then it might work.

I'll think of about the other, and post something elsse later.

can't imagine buffy singing, though... i'm actually trying really hard *not* too...

hey! maybe she could sing the Brady Bunch Song! because i've heard her sing that already, so it wouldn't be so strange. heehee.

aww! those lyrics are so sweet!

i have to confess... i hadn't seen those before...

i liked this bit:

quote:
But I dream a dream so pretty
That I don't feel so depressed
'Cause it soothes my inner kitty
And it helps me get some rest

WiccanBex, I was just going to post that stanza too! Isn't it sooooo sweet?

So, is Josh going to write lyrics for the musical episode?
Any Kitten suggestions for lyrics?

Joss is going to at least write the lyrics. And the music maybe, though I have heard someone else may do that. I know that whatever I could come up with will pale in comparison to the marvel that is Joss Whedon, especially the w/t song.

Hopefully Joss (and UPN) will be even more smart by releasing the finished episode soundrack sometime after the episode airs.

There has got to be a lot of Kitties, and regular Btvs fans, that would love to get the music on CD eventually.

Not to mention all the great Kareoke song bits from Angel. But then again that the Without Buffy Network.

TaraMaclay - I LOVE AIDA!!!

Personally, my fave character was Amneris and I can see Willow or Tara singing her opening song "Every Story" about Buffy and Spike.

Actually, now that I think of it, I could see Tara doing it more. Then being the musical narrator of the whole show, sorta like her character showed up in all the scoobies dreams.

Then she'd be doing A LOT of singing and that CAN'T be a bad thing.

Ah, Princess Willow, if you like the "new Aida", you should get acquainted with the **REAL** "Aida": VERDI's!!!!!

Trust me, I wouldn't lead ya wrong ! It is one of Verdi's most rewarding scores and, if you should happen to be near a major opera house, all of them usually bring out their most lavish sets and costumes to produce it (a good example is the current Metropolitan Opera production in New York ).

Recommended recordings: Both on BMG/RCA--either Toscanini's (he first conducted the opera in 1886, when it was still BRAND NEW ) or Perlea's, with its unbeatable legendary cast (Jussi Bjorling [Radames], Zinka Milanov [Aida], Leonard Warren [Amonasro], and Fedora Barbieri [Amneris] )
--------------------------------------------
"Su! del Nilo al sacro lido
accorrete, egizzi eroi,
da ogni cor prorompa il grido:
guerra e morte allo stranier!"
[Up! hasten, Egyptian heroes, to the sacred shores of the Nile; from every heart let the cry resound: war and death to the foreigner!]
Pharaoh's call to arms in Act I of Verdi's "Aida"

Thanks for the info Hemiola.

I am a musical theater freak. Anything I can get my hands on, basically.

I've never really tried opera before but I have always wanted to. I had the wonderful opportunity of working with the New York City Opera's touring company 5 years in a row when they came to my college. So, I have heard at least 5 operas in my life but I was working at the time and not really paying attention. I will look for the recordings you suggested. I live in San Francisco and I've been hoping to attend a performance at the Opera here but my schedule has restricted me from doing so. I will get there soon, though.

Thanks again.

My only request for the musical episode is that it be serious and not campy. Not that it can't be fun/funny, but I don't want it to be a gimmick. "Hush" was great because it had such a good concept and they took it entirely seriously - it was part of a story and used to the fullest, and not just done for the heck of it. A musical episode sounds good in theory and that's what makes me worry that it'll be a throwaway. Knowing that it's a Joss episode makes me feel better though.

Just for fun, I picture Giles (who we already know is a great singer) singing something "british"-stuffy. Something Henry Higgins. Then he could bust out into The Who or something. It would be great.

in the september issue of the UK buffy mag, joss said:

quote:
"The songs will rhyme like actual songs, I'm trying to walk the line between pop and classics show tunes, i.e. comtemporary music with lyrics that move the narrative instead of just repeating it. I just hope Chris Beck (and Jesse Tobias of Splendid, who i'm hoping will help produce it) can make it all sound coherent, not just a hodgepodge. There will be much comedy and many heartfelt ballads. If it all comes together, it'll have some classics moments. That much i can promise."

chris beck won't be back permanantly, btw - just for that ep, i think.

(sorry if this has been posted before... couldn't see it in this thread anyways)

After what AH said in the interview, I'm intrigued about her singing. Although even if she's awful, she'll probably be awful in a cute way . . . it is Willow after all!

oh... i dunno... might be amusing...

although, i still think it's funnier watching spike swoon all over buffy - the whole unrequited love vampire/slayer thing is just way too funny...

I heard Joss is writing both music and lyrics but Chris Beck is doing the background score. I was so glad Chris returned to Buffy to write the music for The Gift, which I found to be incredibly moving and haunting
