OK, so I finally got around to seeing the premiere episode, and I have to unfortunately say that my opinion of the show has significantly dropped.

I mean, I did have rumblings with how last season's final episode ended that something about the show was going to be dramatically altered, but I never figured it would be done to the degree that it has.

It can't be a real coincidence that, out of the who half hour, we only got about two minutes worth of Aly time, none of which really convinced me that she'll be a full time presence on the show this season.

I get the feeling this season may be the show's last.

Why isn't Aly gonna be on the show full time? I kinda haven't kept up with HIMYM new but I don't remember hearing anything bout that?

From the second season premiere episode, I don't really see how they can work Aly back in as a regular.
After having played the "I need to find myself" card at the end of Series One, Aly was only used in a couple of scenes in the second series premiere, including the final one of the episode, where she is hesitant to go into the bar and see Marshall.
After having ripped his heart out and then pureed it in the blender right in front of him, why would Marshall take her back if he had even a shred of dignity left?

Folks, where's the love? The producers have stated that in S2, they will play with Lily's role as she spends her time away from Marshall; they may hook her up with Barney, or whatnot, but for sure she is an essential part of the show. There is utterly no question in my mind that when all is said and done, Marshall and Lily will end up together. But given the confines of the show and what we already know (ie, that Ted and Robin do NOT end up together), it will be interesting to see how they get there. Meantime, it made sense that Lily might not want to meet up with Marshall at that point, given that he is with all the other friends and that there is much they would need to talk about. She might not be ready, and I am betting she won't be until around episode 18 or 19.

Aly's brunettiness is starting to grown on me (what is it with becoming brunette these days? ie. Aly, SMG, Cameron Diaz, etc.). But I sure do hope she goes back to being red.

Yeah, I agree that I'm being a little unfair. Then again, I may be reading too much into this (I do that sometimes). After all, the last time I remember this scenario happening, Lily was named Tara, Marshall was named Willow, and it didn't end up so well for either of them, you know what I mean? (OK, yeah. I know that HIMYM is a comedy, all funny-fun-fun show, but then again, I didn't actually think the show's creators would actually play the "break-up" card with them near the end of last season, either. And look how wrong I was there.)

Yeah, it was quite a thing to see her as a brunette after seeing her twice in the show as a redhead. I wonder how they'll work that into it. (And I too hope that she goes back to being a redhead. I miss my redhead Aly.)

I have to agree with Dana5140--you have to show a little patience. I have no doubt that the producers have every intention of exploiting Lily's newly acquired independence in all sorts of interesting ways (as an example, think of the hilarious Lily/George Clinton fantasy sequence in the episode--a splendid exhibition of AH's comic talent [loved the bit with the ferret]). I am certain that, given the way the narrator always refers to them as "Aunt Lily" and "Uncle Marshall" that they will, in fact, wind up together at the end of everything. :party

yeah i have to agree - the way the narrator (future ted) talks about lily would certainly indicate she is still around. plus lots of people have done what lily did and eventually gotten back together with their partners ... it doesn't have to mean marshall is weak or something ... just that they will work it out - probably over this season! and besides robin was being sympathetic about lily so i have no doubt that will be the way back into the group!

It was very much a Lily-centric episode tonight, which while completely predictable, did showcase Aly''s comdeic skills, and with an ending that one could see coming from a mile away- though Aly did get to turn the tears on a bit, and no one in the world does that better.

That, plus the end bit, where she does the "twin" thing (what is it with Aly and weird hats?) :laugh OMG! The perfect comeuppance for "Doogie Himmler"!

I read in TV Guide that there's an upcoming episode where Lily has a drunken liaison with Ted. :thud Speaking for all heteromales out there in TVLand, this is unfair. First Ted gets Robin, then Lily??? What is this -- a sign of the apocalypse? ;-)

Hey, now, I'm one of those heteromales! ;-)

Oy, Lily with TED? I thought they were going to set her up with Barney. Putting her with Ted would surely ruin Ted's relation with Robin, wouldn't it? And it would just kill Marshall, so I am going to assume that no one, but no one, will find out- I can see them getting up together, realizing what happened, and then making a pact to never speak of it again.

Aly's outfits in this ep were really nice, almost Willow-like in some cases. And I have to agree with Ted, Marshall, Barney and Robin; Robin has a nice ass. :-)

Adjust your viewing schedule: CBS has announced that "The Class" and "How I Met Your Mother" are flipping timeslots as of next week. In other words, "...Mother" now will air Mondays at 8:00.

And Doctor Who starts for me that week, too.

Why can't they move it back to Sunday? I have absolutely no schedule conflicts there...

Sad to say, that was pretty much all I personally enjoyed about the episode, as once again I absolutely failed to find it entertaining. I haven't gotten around to seeing last week's yet, though from what I've read about it, I doubt it will help change my opinion.

I still believe that unless something drastic happens (and I mean soon), HIMYM will be gone by the end of this season.

I was thinking that myself as I watched the other night...I mean Aly was pretty much the draw and now that the dynamic has changed so much it just isn't as funny as it used to be...also when you get two characters together who have had the L.U.S.T...it invariably kills the show...plus how long can the show possibly go on with the concept and never actually get to the part where he meets the mother?

Still, you know damn well that eventually Lily and Marshall will get back together...I just keep thinking, with the Buffy alums that have already been on the show...and the tendency of Buffy alums to work together (are Nick and Charisma joined at the hip now?)...seeing that everywhere...they really need to go back to the thing Lily said at the end of the last season about never getting to have that lesbian experience in college and bring Amber on the show...they could at least get one week of really high ratings out of it...still it has been my experience that shows I really like in the beginning and find funny, never stay on the air for long...the american public wants the same old cookie cutter crap over and over...for instance what happened to Out of Practice? I thought that was a great show and not just because of the hot lesbian...

Indeed. Aly was pretty much the only reason I started watching the show (of course, since then I found other reasons to keep watching, but it was always about Aly as far as I was concerned.) And as I've said before, the last few episodes of the first season really threw up warning bells, and I was rather disappointed in the Season finale.

umgaynow wrote:also when you get two characters together who have had the L.U.S.T...it invariably kills the show...plus how long can the show possibly go on with the concept and never actually get to the part where he meets the mother?

I have to agree with you. Those two factors will be the death of this show before far too long.

umgaynow wrote:Still, you know damn well that eventually Lily and Marshall will get back together...

Yeah. I know that. And I'm sure that most other people know, too. Fact is, the show's creators seem either unable or unwilling (most likely the latter) that they have any real plans to do so. I mean, yeah, there was the thing in the last episode, but that was played more for laughs than anything else.

Actually, when you think about it, that could be the very worst thing they could do at this point.

I heard about this before, but didn't want to post anything here until I heard an "official" announcement. And apparently, it got made back in August and I never realized it.

HIMYM Season 1 to come out next month.

Cover Art

I'll admit, I was all too eager to pick this up, because (stupid person that I am) I never taped it when I had the chance (this despite the fact that I had every chance to do so). And I really do want to get this, despite my opinion of how much the show has slid.

The problem is, I'm not exactly swimming in cash these days (I've made sure to save up enough money to get the He-Man sets, and had no real desire to do any more big spending for the rest of this year. And knowing this, life has apparently decided to release a great deal of things I want to get in the last two months and a half, which include a new "Star Wars" book, the 20th Anniversary release of "Transformers: The Movie", and the first half of "She-Ra."

I gotta admit, HIMYM Season 1 really is on the bottom of the list of things I wanna get.

I've missed a couple of this season's episodes. However, I saw the one this last Monday, and I have to say I'm quite pleased. Aly had a good bit of screentime, and a nice story for her -- Lily temporarily with Barney. She and "Doogie Himmler" had great scenes together.

Lily redeccing Barney's apartment just illustrates a Fundamental Truth about men and women: Men see a woman and want her to stay exactly the same; women see a man and see what they need to change.

Much as I hate to say it, I find this program growing on me. The jokes are telegraphed miles in advance, Aly overemotes too much (but is still cute as hell), I hate the laugh track, but dammit if this thing hasn't caught me up. I find myself tuning in. I think so long as the show creators understand that Aly and Neil Patrick Harris are the real reason people watch, I think this has legs. I think that is also why we have seen their profiles rise over the course of S2. Ted and Robin are too sedate and we know they do not end up together. Marshall is just a goof, played too obviously as the loveable lunk. But Lily has spirit, and Barney is all Id. Lily gives as good as she gets, too- as Barney found out. :-)

OK, so I finally got a chance to see this week's episode, hoping to God that it can be the one that convinces me that this show isn't going to be on the chopping block.

Well, it was...and it wasn't.

To be fair, I have been rather overly critical of the show lately, though I would like to believe that my reasons and justification for doing so aren't that far off the mark (the fact that they have been repeated in this thread by at least one person at least tells me that). And to be honest, there were times during this episode when I truly felt as if the writers were grasping at straws for plot elements in order to tie a story together (it has got to be the oldest cliche in the book to put the two people in the show who couldn't be any more dissimilar together.) And, to me, it did end on a sour note, with Lily back where she was, with no real indication that things would get better for her.

Then again, I have to admit that this episode produced the first truly laugh out loud moment for me this season. And, being a Star Wars nut, I got a chuckle out of the reference (though I gotta wonder how they managed to get together a full suit of ROTS clone trooper armor).

I still have my doubts, but if future episodes are as good as this one was, then I might start to think better of the show.

ETA: I just noticed this (the next day, naturally) that this post got me Not Much for the Timber. Yay!

Neil Patrick Harris says he is gay

LOS ANGELES -
Neil Patrick Harris is gay and wants to quell any rumors to the contrary. "(I) am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest," Harris tells People magazine's Web site.

The 33-year-old actor said he was motivated to disclose his sexuality because of recent "speculation and interest in my private life and relationships."

Harris stars on the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother." He started on TV as a teen, playing the namesake doctor on the series "Doogie Howser, M.D."

So, "Barney" is a sistah...isn't that ironic...considering the character he plays...then again look at Bull on Frasier...same thing...gay guy playing the crude skirt chasing swinish guy...but frankly, NPH did always set off my gaydar a bit...no straight guy keeps his hair that perfect

Anyway, good for him having the courage to come out...it's funny, my best bud and I were saying the other day that it's always the women who come out in the industry and never the guys and now with the guy on Grey's Anatomy this makes 2 in one week

I'm glad that Harris haad the courage to come and the grace to do it as he did. But the truth is, this was forced on him by blogger Perez Hilton, who was also involved in outing the fellow on Grey's Anatomy. I am really of mixed minds about that. The fact I go home at night and sleep with my wife is of no moment at all to anyone but me. Who Harris sleeps with is his business, and I just don''t see what is gained by outing him; he's just an actor on a TV show of no particular significance. It's not like he heads the entire evangelical movement, you know?

Teh real problem now is that, given that Barney is a hyper-hetero, will there be any negative fallout from (a) fans or (b) network brass as a result? It is not as if there are no gays in Hollywood, but still the old prejudices do persist and it would be sad if he were to pay a price for an outing not of his own choice.
