I just ordered it, but I went another route. I used the good ol' reliable US postal service with stamps and everything! Hopefully it won't be too long before I get a confirmation. Yay Amber, lucky us. :applause

I actually e-mailed benson entertainment with this question just to make sure they would be offering the same deal in a few weeks. I got a reply this morning and the response was "at the very least six months". hope this helps.

fredric,

Not a stupid question at all.

They need the information, of course. But I don't think e-mailing is necessary. You could just print the information on a piece of paper and mail it with your money order. As long as they have the information I'm sure that would be fine.

I had a little trouble with the form on the Chance site, so I just emailed them directly. That worked out fine.

I was just talking to a friend the other day who asked when this movie was going to come out. lol Great timing.

The Price of Chance and other Updates

Hey all. Just got off the phone with Diane Benson and she asked me to spread the word about a couple of things.

PLEASE feel free to spread this around as you see fit.

Some people have been complaining about the price of the Chance Poster/DVD opportunity that first went live last week. "It's a ripoff." That sort of thing. Diane has asked me to explain a few things.

The effort to get Chance distributed and into the hands of the fans has been a bumpy one. I won't bore you with details here, but suffice it to say that there are issues having to do with everything from SAG to shooting on video to prudishness. Things might have worked out eventually, or might not have. At a certain point, Amber and Diane just didn't want people to have to wait any longer.

BUT . . . there are rules. Because of professional agreements with SAG, Chance can not be sold to the general public without a whole boatload of complications that would then make it impossible. That is why 1) You can NOT just buy Chance, but must instead buy the poster or photo and why 2) ANYTHING YOU'VE READ ABOUT IT BEING FOR SALE ELSEWHERE, INCLUDING ANY CONVENTIONS, IS NOT TRUE.

Subsequently, when trying to figure out how to resolve their dilemma, Diane was speaking to a SAG rep who said, quite literally, "just give it to them."

Of course that's ridiculous. They'd already sunk a great deal of money into the movie and . . . and please make note of this . . . while a Hollywood studio might pay pennies per copy to make hundreds of thousands or even millions of copies of DVDs, it costs a great deal more (and I mean a GREAT deal more) when you're doing only a comparative handful. And, of course, going about it this way, there's no way to know how many copies will be needed as part of this poster/picture offer.

Still, Amber wanted to make the movie available to those people who had been waiting a long time to see it.

Unfortunately, to print the pictures and posters, to arrange the mailing materials, to handle the e-mail, the orders, the money, and to manufacture the DVDs and videos . . . all of these things cost money. And that was going to be UP FRONT money.

Then came the idea . . . a signed photo or, even rarer, a signed Chance poster could be sold and the DVD or video given away FREE with every order. This would lessen the up front risk and still let those who had been so patient get a look at Chance.

The average DVD is $15 to $20. The average independent DVD from a small distributor can be $30. An UNSIGNED poster can be easily $20. I'll be honest with you and say that I cautioned them that with international shipping and some other variables, they might not be charging enough.

No one is forcing anyone to buy anything. And there's that wonderful old saying about not being able to please everyone, which is so darn true. The point is, people have been clamoring to see Chance, Amber put her heart and soul into making it (not to mention the budget), and this was the only way that could be found to get it to the audience. Considering what some conventions charge for a signed photo, I think it's a hell of a deal.

Now this part is from me: if you see people online complaining about the price, ask them to go do a little research on the costs involved in mass producing and mailing DVDs or videos, not to mention printing photos and posters, the cost of those mailing tubes, all that fun stuff.

Personally, I think it's more than worth it. It's a brilliantly charming movie with fantastic performances. I'm a little bothered by the suggestion that they're asking too much, as though anybody is going to be making a bundle out of it.

Amber was getting impatient, and she figured a lot of you were as well.

I hope you like it. I know you will.

Diane also wanted me to thank everyone again for all their support throughout this process. It's been risk after risk, and it's only been possible with the enthusiasm of Amber's fans.

Finally, yes, I just posted this, but unless I'm asked to do something like this, I don't speak on Amber's behalf, or on Diane's. Amber's site is Amber's site, my site is my site, and if you have a question for her or a message for her, I'm NOT a short cut to deliver it. Just a reminder for those of you who might be thinking along those lines.

And finally, finally all of you 'holics know this message isn't really meant for you. I suspect I haven't told you anything you didnt' already know. But you surf in places where they might not be as knowledgeable about all of this, and others visit here who might also not know the score.

Well this message isn't meant for us either, but there may be someone out there who needs to have it spelled out I guess. I would not consider anything a rip off unless I paid a shitload of money and did not get what was promised. With Chance I know what I am getting: a pretty poster and one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, no one is making me buy it. No false promises or advertising here.

Amber was getting impatient, and she figured a lot of you were as well.

Well hell yeah, I've been impatient ever since I read the script. Having seen the movie I am no less patient now to get my hands on the DVD. So I am grateful she decided to do this.

It's good to have an explanation for why they're giving it away with the purchase of a picture and/or poster. I'd been thinking it must be something like that, but I don't know enough about that stuff to've figured it out on my own.

As to people complaining about the cost...pffft. Spending $45 to have a copy and a picture or poster? That's a sweet deal for us and, considering the expenses involved, I hope what they're charging is enough.

Amber's about the least greedy person on the planet, I think. Anyone who knows a thing about her knows it ain't about the money.

Once again I'm reminded how lucky we are. My respect and adoration for Amber knows no bounds. :heart

It was sweet of that "hairy lesbian" to post that info.:) I thought there was logic behind the prices and the free DVD/VHS and now I know why. I have no problem at all with the price as I ordered the photo and the poster and get a free DVD copy of Chance as well!

A big "pooh" to anyone who is complaining about the cost being too expensive.

I just hope Amber at least breaks even on the distribution.

What a woman! Gotta love her even more. We are so lucky.

Thanks to Chris Golden once again and also for clarifying that stuff about the DVDs being available at the cons as well. It saves a lot of people from thinking it is going to be available to them and even going to such things based on that alone.

It's a shame that he even has post such things to deflect the comments of others but hey, you can't please everyone. So stuff 'em I say! I've ordered mine and it's money well spent. :grin

People are actually complaining about the price?!?!?

Damn..:spin

And here I thought it was just the folks at PayPal being all uppity about this little transaction...(two different people from PayPal called me this morning at work to see if I had received the product I paid $63 for on July 8th. LOL)...I think I'll be :bow 'ing down to little Miss Amber for the next 30 years or so for making such an AWESOME film available...not complaining about the price or method of distribution!

:clap Kudos to Amber for making her dream come true! :clap

ETA: I'm not sure what PayPal considers "a ton" of orders/purchases...but the second person I spoke with this morning mentioned (in the course of our conversation) that they had amassed a "ton" of orders for the product. :applause

I really sincerely doubt that anyone who complained about the price is not amber fan. I imagine it's other people who might have interest in the film for reasons like seeing another actor in the film. Amber fans know the score and know she would never try to rip off fans.

I too imagined there was some kind of contractual difficulty with selling the film itself. It's sad that she couldn't just do that.

Anyway, the part I found intriguing is that this is the only way so far that you can purchase chance. This convention thing is not a done deal and I would hate for some of you to lose out because you are waiting for this tour thing.

Not to mention the big thing to remember here is that Amber and Diane need the money up front to cover the cost of the initial printing of the DVD. It's important for eveyone to purchase their photo or poster as soon as they can afford it.

Well officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

Postby Kajun » Tue Jul 15, 2003 12:08 am

The people who are complaining obviously don’t realize that a signed Chance Poster usually fetches $65 - $90 on eBay. I have wanted this item ever since a picture of it was posted here on the Kitten many moons ago. The last Poster up for bid sold for $100.50. I was bidding on it until the announcement of a photo/poster/free DVD offer. My last bid was $52. For only three bucks more, instead of only getting a poster, I will also get a signed photo and finally get to watch Chance... repeatedly… in slow motion.. and backwards even! I consider this offer an excellent deal !!

I have never heard of anyone from Paypal calling customers and questioning the status of items being purchased, especially not within such a short time frame. It doesn’t sound right to me. If these calls are in fact being made by Paypal employees then.. Whoo Hoo! Swamped with payments to Amber… oh yes!

well to mind mind anyone complaining doesn't yet realize that it's a picture of AMBER:heart

that's the only thing I can think of that would explain it.

plus: when I first saw the price I was shocked. when I was making copies of my short (9min) on dvd it cost $30 per unit unless you ordered over 100. getting these copies is not cheap.

The only complaints I've seen were from the AICN talkbackers, and can therefore be completely ignored (along with their opinions of the film). Personally, I'd have been happy to pay the £35 just for the signed picture of Amber.

I´ll pay 71,99 $ to get the movie. And I love to spend that money.

Benson entertainment even helped me to get everything done right. They tried to write some german sentences, which I think was really cute.

Everyone who can afford it should buy this poster and the movie.

I think they are swamped with emails - I got an email back several days later basically saying that, plus thanks etc. They then give you further directions in the email. I would strongly advise emailing the order and include all the information the form asked of you.

If, with Anthony Stewart Head, "It's for the children" then, with the lovely and talented Renaissance woman Amber Benson, it's surely for the fans.

There can be few, if any, people in the entertainment industry today who are more attuned to the cares and desires of their fans than Amber.

She has already invested every ounce of her blood, toil, tears, sweat, and ready cash to write, direct, produce, edit, and knock on every door for it to be shown.

She premiered it in her home state and then braved the horrors of the Friar Tuck Inn to screen it for us at MR2003.

Did she have to do any of this? A resounding NO would be the answer.

When she asked people for donation to help fund the movie, did they have to do it? Again with the NO.

Now, when her only concern again is for the fans who haven't seen it and for those of us who want to support our favorite creative lady, she is asking for a nominal investment in quality "Chance" memorabilia and to own a copy of the film through a back-door kind of deal.

I, myself, gave Benson Entertainment more money than they were asking simply because I wanted to show my support for any creative output from Amber.

And nothing says thank you like dollars in the waist-band, or so Xander would have you believe:tara :bigkiss :flower :bow
