Pipsqueak -

I thought it was a spoon at first and wondered wot the heck Amber was doin... :hmm

I think she's looking thru a "Pan-Glass" - a filter used by the cinematographer for determining lighting contrast and tonal separation for a scene.

New development!!!

Aria, Amber, and Diane have worked things out and Chance will be shown at MR!!

Prior to this, the answer to the question of whether Chance would be shown was NO.

Please don't read into this. A distribution deal is still being sought.

For $16, on Sunday night, those attending MR can See both Chance and the Ghosts of Albion.

Ok, I'm attending MR, and of course I'm going to watch this movie. and enjoy it :)

But in the larger picture I'm afraid this might be bad. What could have made Amber change her stance on this? My fear is that it's because she's tried every avenue of distribution, and failed to get a deal.

If someone can confirm I'm totally wrong, I would very much like to be corrected on this one.

I'm gonna step in here & clear up some things, first LS posted what to her knowledge was the most up to date info so there's no reason for her to have had her credibilty in this questioned, she is a fantastic person & one I'm glad to call a friend. The deal for screening the movie was literally JUST finalized today so Julie had no idea that it was even being discussed between Amber, Diane & myself so she did not one thing wrong when she posted, she merely stated what she knew as fact. Jimmi, Amber has worked out some sort of deal on distributorship for the movie which I didn't ask about because frankly, it's none of my business however whenever I have spoken to any of them we have had a wonderful rapport & she has trusted me to do the best thing for the event & her participation in it so she has given me her trust & faith which I am very grateful for & allowed me to show this at MR. Hopefully this clears everything up & everyone can go back to being a happy family.

Postby urnofosiris » Thu Apr 10, 2003 11:48 pm

Aria, I wasn't questioning anyone's credibility as I already took it as a fact that Chance would not be shown at MR, I just didn't understand the need to restate what was already known. That did not stop me from wishful thinking though. I have been doing that every time I read a report from someone who has seen this movie and ever since I read the script. I've been wishing for Amber Benson to bring Chance to a Dutch filmfestival as well. Seeing as I am becoming good at it, maybe that will happen some day. :p

Thanks so much for telling us and arranging this Aria. This will make this convention even more unique than it already would have been methinks. :)

Tickets for Chance & GOA are set at $8, you need to pre buy them as they won't be for sale at the event. Start time for GOA is 8 pm & Chance will run from 9 to about 11:30, I finally got the opportunity to speak with Amber on the phone & she is wonderful, I'm an even bigger Amber fan now. You guys have all said how great she is & now I see why :)

"Chance" interview

Postby kajo 2000 » Sun Apr 27, 2003 4:56 am

(Mods: I read through all 16 pages of this thread and this interview didn't seem to have been posted yet but I will move it to the Old Amber Interviews thread if you feel it belongs there instead).

I recently found this interview Amber gave regarding Chance in the archives at City of Angel:

Quote:
Summer Film Festival

Featuring Amber Benson

07/31/2001

by Head CoA Writer Kristy Bratton

In our ongoing effort to cover the latest and most interesting aspects of the Angel cast and crew, we begin with Amber Benson's own Indy project entitled Chance, is her first self-written and directed film. Appearing in Chance are Buffy actors, Emma Caulfield [Anya] and James Marsters [Spike], along with Angel actor Andy Hallett and including Amber herself in the leading role. Plus an appearance from Buffy writer, David Fury.

In a first of our own at CoA, we landed an interview with a Buffy cast mate, Amber Benson! The buzz and excitement over her first film project did not limit that other show we all so fondly watch and when we had the chance (No pun intended. Well, hell yes, pun intended!) thanks to the connection of Andy Hallett's appearance in the film, we jumped on it.

A huge endeavor like your first major production doesn't germinate overnight, so from the initial conception to the final cut had planted its seed in Amber's mind a ways back. "I started writing it a few years ago," Amber explains. "Just playing around on my computer babbling about this and that. Then the story kinda took off and then died and then took off again. It's always herky jerky when you're trying to be creative. I personally wait for my muse to come and whisper in my ear, but that's just me. Then, some friends and I decided to make a movie and Chance was the only thing I'd been working on that fit a digital format and was cheap enough to shoot."

We're all familiar with Amber as an actor, and not just limiting herself to the role of the spirited yet shy and loving Tara. Amber has appeared in such pop-culture hits as, Bye-Bye Love along with fellow co-start Eliza Dushku [Faith] and The Crush. More recently, in Taboo and The Prime Gig. Writing is a completely different mindset from the format as well as the performance. So has writing always been a passion on the same level as acting for Amber or did it naturally follow as a part of her expanding career? She told us that she's always liked writing, "I think that is because I'm a story teller. Whether it's acting or writing or just imagining scenarios in my own head, I just adore stories. I love creating a magical, non-linear world that my brain can inhabit and just feast on. Writing lets you play God a little bit too, so that's kinda fun."

Chance is a black comedy about a girl, Chance is her name, and her relationship with her neurotically obsessed best friend Simon. We watch as Chance deals with her loves, losses, family, self and most importantly Simon. The film takes you along an emotional yet thought provoking journey that can make you laugh and cry. Dramatic at times, flooringly funny at others and with just enough twists to keep you guessing how it will all end and if Chance can really find true love! For most writers, exploring new worlds and limitations is almost therapeutic. Sometimes you tap into things you never realized where there when developing a character or plot.

Amber agreed, "Inside you because this is an emotionally and psychologically reaching piece in my mind. I didn't realize how much of this script was me. I mean, it says a lot about who and what I am. And not the way you would think, either." She was quick to explain, "I am not Chance. She may think a bit like me, but I'm really more Simon, the male lead, than anyone else. All his quirks are mine. Strangeness, huh?" It may not be far from how we perceive Amber. Parts of Tara reflect her caring and compassionate side as well. And any actor who doesn't put a small piece of themselves into each role they take on, well, there would be something missing. Certainly not the case when Amber appears on screen.

Of course, the beasts are either never as bad as you expect them or worse than you feared. In Amber's case, now that the film has run its course from beginning to end was it a 'labor of love' or 'The Film from Hell that Ate Amber Benson'? "At this very moment, I feel like a boney carcass slowly being digested at the bottom of some monster's third stomach," she confesses. "But at other times, I think I created something really cool. The critic in me just hasn't learned to shut-up, I guess."

Critic or not, there is always a favorite moment and a least favorite moment on the set that you can reflect upon with the knowledge that you'll take that learning into the next project. Amber recalls those moments for us, "I guess my favorite moment would have to be right before I started filming that first morning. It was very early and I was walking my dog. I thought to myself, 'Tonight when I go to bed I will be a filmmaker'. It still gives me goose bumps. The worst moment probably would have to be when we lost some footage and had to re-shoot a very important scene. And this one still gives me nightmares." The scene was an extremely funny encounter at a restaurant when Chance and her mother meet up for dinner with dad and his new, quite younger girlfriend (played by Emma Caulfield). Along for the fun was Simon (played by James Marsters) and what followed was some of the most witty and comical entanglement of the film. The scene was re-shot later on a boat with a slightly revised script but the original version was hilarious.

When given the opportunity to work outside the Joss-verse with the quality of talent she regularly has on the set of Buffy, James Marsters for example, only fun can ensue. And more fun when you add the likes of Angel's Andy Hallett. "I love them all," she admits. "They were a joy to work with and they made it a very special movie indeed." When being a part of the acting ensemble herself in Mere Smith's Indy film, we were wondering what challenges Mere put Amber up against, knowing how wacky Mere can be and Amber playfully confessed, "Well, after she beat me with a dogwood switch and made me sing the alphabet backwards fifteen times to the tune of the national anthem, we got on swimmingly. Kidding. She was a pleasure to work for," Amber professes. "She wrote an awesome script with a lot of kung fu grip action, peopled it with hot guys and then sat back in that director's chair and made us all feel like we were on a Spielberg film. She rocks and is an absolute doll. I'm ready to see her direct an Angel ep." Or shall we all say to Joss Whedon that Amber should direct a Buffy episode!

Each project has a personal goal for its creator whether it be emotional gain or just a learning experience. For Amber it was, "To just do it," she enthuses. "To prove to myself that a twenty-four year old nobody female could make a goddamned movie. Even if it turns out to be a pile of doggie doo at the end of the day, I can say that I did it." The proof is in the pudding or so they say, so where can fans get a taste of Amber's hard work? "Hopefully we will do the festival thing and then see what happens from there. If worse comes to worse, we can always put it on the Internet or sell it on video out of the back of my mini-van," comes the trademark Amber humor. But hopefully the critics will recognize Chance for what it is, a quality, well crafted piece of independent film work with the backing of original talent and depth to produce there much of same!

At the end of the day, what's your final thought? "Life is very short," Amber says. "Try everything you've dreamed about (within the perimeters of sanity and the law) and regret nothing. Oh, and don't forget the sunscreen."

James Marsters on "Chance" & Amber

Postby kajo 2000 » Thu May 01, 2003 9:23 am

Excerpt of James Marsters' Q&A at last weekend's Vulkon Convention in Cleveland (from atnzone):

Quote:
Will the movie you did with Amber Benson be released?

That's the movie Chance. I really have a soft place in my heart for young artists who are beginning. I remember the days when I was starting to produce theater and how hard that is and how much negative reinforcement you get when you try to become more than you were before. Amber showed me the script she had written and I thought it was brilliant.

She said she wanted to film it for seven thousand dollars and I said 'Cool!' Basically, I wanted to support her in her first effort. She was wonderful. I dropped so many balls when I was starting to produce and she didn't drop one. She had no money but everything was right down professional and I really respected that. She made some really smart choices. When you shoot in digital or video, the color really blands out so she saturated her set with really bright colors to make up for that.

And I understand that it is available but I don't know where. I think that movie was a really auspicious beginning for a very talented storyteller. I had a blast doing it because I got to play something completely unlike Spike. I was in a dress! I look forward to her next movie. What you see is delightful.

Edited to add: Nate Barlow, who co-produced Chance, has a couple of Amber pics at his website:

I had this great plan to buy the limited access ticket and take the train over to moonlight rising just for the screening of chance but now I see they are sold out. Mind you I was willing to fork out a good $38 for a movie. But $138?!!!!! I'm going to go cry now. Unless someone thinks I can bribe my way in or pretent perhaps I just lost my pass? So close and yet so far. And after having to leave California right before the screening in Sac. Any news of other screenings of Chance?

So definitely going to this, Amber's just so perfect (:sigh ) and there's no way I'm missing out on an oppurtunity like this. Still trying to get friends to come with the me to the "David Boreanaz European event" so I can meet her, but not having too much luck at the moment, so this may be a better one. It may be longer before I finally meet her, but she's worth the wait (just hope I can wait)

sooo, this one, definitely the one with the oneness. And I don't know what I just said there, so I'm gonna just give up.
