Hello, Kittens,
Well, I did go down to the Con and woo-hoo, am I glad I did.
On Friday, we were just walking around, and we happened by the Inkworks booth and I peeked over and there was Amber. Whoa! I jumped in line and waited about 40 minutes and then there she was: overalls covered in paint, orange Florida t-shirt with holes in it, pink striped socks, tennies. So, I walked up and said “Hi, how are you?” She said “I’m fine, how are you doing?” Of course I said I was a huge fan and she said “Oh, thank you so much.” She asked who did I want the autograph made out to and then signed her comic, a promo card, and a postcard. I told her I had read her comic and really liked it, that I could see how much she’d grown as a comic writer from her first one, and she said(as if she was really surprised) “Oh, really? You really liked it?” I did, and I said so. She said, “Thank you so much. It’s a blast.” Then I inquired about the second issue, and she said that the story was done, but they lost the artist(the one who had done the first book) and they had to wait for an artist to be hired. So, she had no date for the last issue. I said I thought she had a beautiful singing voice, and did she always sing that high. She said, “No, Joss tricked me! He brought a keyboard in and played it and then when I went into the studio it was in a higher key.” She said she nailed it in one take, and that James Marsters was in after her, but she kept saying, “No, one more, let me do one more.” She was so cute and funny. I said thanks and she said thanks and we left.
But then, we came back about 20 minutes later, with something else to sign and no one was there. We walked straight up and said “Hi, again!” She smiled and said, “Back so soon?” I laughed and asked her about her movie, what was going on with it; she smiled and said that it was going to be showed in Birmingham at the film festival. Of course I said “Great! Good luck!” She said “Thank you so much. Bye you guys.” And then we left. Left happily, I might add!
We missed Emma Caulfield upstairs, but my brother went and watched her movie called “Tooth Fairy” and sat in on the Q&A. Said the movie was okay. When the Q&A started, the writer/director talked about the movie and all the things they tried to do, then opened the floor for questions. The guy said, “Okay, the first Buffy question goes to. . .” and sure enough, someone stood up and asked Emma about Buffy. She said she had been talked to and that this was the last season as far as she knew. Didn’t say much more(as far as he could remember—he was pretty tired!) I went up there, after Amber, and saw Emma from about 50 feet. Her hair is very dark brown and she was waving to everyone and smiling.
So, on Saturday, I worked my way out to the autograph area and met James “Clem” Leary and talked to him a bit. Told him how hugely popular he is on the internet and stuff. He gave me a flyer fo his fan club and official website. I got his autograph and a picture with him; I asked him if he was going to be back this season and he said that they had called him for his availability and that that was a good sign.
On to Virginia Hey(Farscape), Richard Trebor(Xena & Hercules), Michael Chaote(B5), Paul Dini, etc.
Then, back in line for Amber again. Got in line at about 2:15 pm and immediately saw several women wearing “got tara?” t-shirts with the website monikers. Got very excited and braved the waters: asked one if she was xita and woo-hoo, it was! I was so excited. I just introduced myself and told her how much I loved the site and that I was writing a story on there and just, well, thank you!!! I took a picture of her and—wait for it. . . Rally! So much fun. Saw some Amberholics, also. Started chatting with the women in front of me and, lo-and-behold, it was 4WiccanLuv! We talked about Amber, the site and my story; she was such a sweetie, giving me all kinds of compliments—so good for the ego!
Then, when Amber showed up again(about 15 minutes late, but who’s counting?), she was just as personable as she had been the day before. I said hi and she said “Hi, how are you this morning?” Then she made a funny face and said, “Well, I should say this afternoon, huh? I’m a geek.” I laughed. I had brought her first comic with me and she said, “Oh, wow, this is the old one!” I said, “Yeah, but it was excellent.” So, she signed both issue covers, plus the painted cover of her new one. Then I asked if I could get a photo with her and she said, “Of course!” So, I got one. Yay me! Then my cousin had two cards signed and we thanked her and as we were leaving, she said, “I won’t be here tomorrow, you guys!” We laughed and said bye and ran off to “covet” our Amber experience. Still coveting as I type this. . . .
Okay, so here’s one more bit. I did go over to see Joss. Don’t hate me, please. I didn’t hear him speak or anything, but I did want to get my first issue of “Fray” signed. I’m bad, I know. He came early to the Dark Horse booth, which could have meant a couple of things: his Q&A upstairs was over quickly because no one was there, or it got heated and pretty ugly, or it just ended early. Anyway, the line was very long and my brother had saved my spot for me(about 15 in). So, I got to the front(sorry, I’m a comic geek) and had him sign “Fray #1” and my Watcher’s guide. I asked him about the last issue of Fray and he said it wasn’t done and he was very, very busy, and wasn’t sure when it would be out, that he was working on it. No time for much else as they were filing people through very quickly. If it makes anyone feel better, he looked pretty strung out—tired, haggard, pale, out of it. But I will say this, he got there early and started signing, and when we popped back in later, he was still signing past his scheduled time.
Then, I went off and did other Con things, like the Masquerade and all that good stuff, but all I could talk about was Amber and xita and the website and Amber. How lovely she was. And her mom(who she looks so much like I can’t believe it!) and sister—totally nice. Her mom just kept saying how wonderful we fans were and I just kept thinking, can you blame us? Just look how great your daughter is. Beautiful, talented, kind! Anyway, that was my first ComicCon and I thought it was pretty excellent! Okay, it was F*cking awesome!!! I took lots of pictures and when they get developed, I’ll figure out how to post them; maybe I can send them to some kind kitten and they can do it???
Until then. . .
Kris
“Frell that!”
