How I Met Your Mother

Anything about Willow & Tara, Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson.

I must say, I've often been bemused by the success of HIMYM. I tried watching the 1st season of it and I couldn't get myself to laugh once, finding the jokes very forced. Granted I am a fan of Boston Legal, and HIMYM simply couldn't come close to that laugh factory, but despite game attempts by all the cast it just isn't, for me at least, remotely funny. Other shows have came and went, some even having shorter runs than a single season (Out Of Practice with Henry Winkler and Stockard Channing, which i thought was quite funny, never got a full season) that I felt were far funnier than HIMYM and certainly at the moment Big Bang Theory and Two & A Half Men leaves HIMYM trailing behind in terms of laugh quota.

But in these tough times if people find the show amusing and is keeping the lovely Aly in work then fair enough.

How't now? Wha' ha' ye so many figmagaries?? (James Boswell)

As the famous Scotsman quoted above said, I really can't see why you have a problem with the show. For me, it is quite enough just to have the pleasure of seeing Mrs. Denisoff every week. On top of that, while some episodes are clearly better than others, on the whole the show is bright and witty, especially compared to some of the other haggis one can see on American television these day. :happy

The actors (especially AH ;-) ) truly inhabit their characters, and flawlessly deliver some truly great lines. For example, when Robin accuses Barney of being "smitten" by one of his conquests, he replies "I don't get smitten. I smite."

I implore you to give HIMYM another chance. You won't regret it.

I've tried on a few occassions to get into it (even started watching the recent ep that name dropped Tara) but I've yet to watch an episode that made me crack more than a weary smile. It simply isn't anywhere near as funny as it thinks it is for my mind, and as I've said, other shows leave it standing in terms of humour. Heck, drama shows like House are funnier than HIMYM. And no, Aly isn't enough for me to watch a show.

I gotta be honest. I don't think I ever would have watched the show to begin with if Aly wasn't in it.

Different buttons on different people, I think. HIMYM pushes a lot of my buttons in a good way. Big Bang Theory pushes a lot of my buttons too, but both in a good way and a bad way.

I absolutely adore the way the HIMYM cast manages to pull off their lines, especially NPH, Alyson and Cobie. Barney/Lily interactions always leave me cracking up or going "awwwww....squeee". Barney/Robin and Robin/Lily interactions tie for second place. Ted and Marshall just don't suck me in and scenes with just these characters don't fare as well to me (hence my lack of care about Ted/Zoey). With that said, they're not that bad, they just don't match up to the rest.

Big Bang Theory hits all my geek buttons and I love keeping an inner scorecard about how many references to geek culture I can completely understand on something other than a superficial level. With that said, Sheldon's lines are very awkward (not in a social context) and frequently even jarring. It's very obvious the writers are trying to cram in technobabble, instead of letting the character be organic. Add in the very frequently non-subverted stereotyping and I hesitate to give the show more than a B-.

It might be a futile hope, but Amber guest starring for like half a season would cause my Squee-meter to irretrievably meltdown. Amber>>>>>Zoey.

Man, I had to sit and watch her telling Marshall like three times. Her face is just so amazing.

Also: I think one of the reasons that I really like HIMYM is that my parents spent their twenties and thirties in New York City, so I grew up hearing about it. It's a show that reminds me of stories I heard from my mom, even if the details of the stories are totally different. I mean, yes, I started watching because Aly and NPH are on it, and to this day they're the people I get the most out of. But I there's more to it than that. A lot of stuff leading up to Marshall's dad dying didn't appeal to me, but I think starting with the episode where Lily tells him, the show has been a lot better this season.

The season finale was great and I LOVED the cliffhanger! So, so happy that Lily is finally pregnant!!!!!! :banana :applause :bounce

I absolutely love the stuff they come up with for Lily...her with the 'vomit talk' and Marshall being able to understand her every word...hilarious. Alyson is such a wonderful actress and is so great with being able to transition from quirky humor to serious mode in the blink of an eye. And her facial expressions kill me! She doesn't even need to have a line, just the look on her face says it all.

I've seen every episode and some of my favorites (Cockamouse) several times and I have to say...this season was very funny and there was A LOT of Buffy references too. From the Blitz episode that referenced 'The Gentlemen' to Tara as Lily's first choice as a baby name...great stuff. Overall, I thought the ep where Marshall's Dad died and the countdown, was pure genius. I didn't even notice it until about half way through and then went back and watched it again trying to catch all the numbers.

OK, so I've babbled enough and I don't care what anyone says, it's worth the watch...if for nothing more than getting to see Aly every week! :grin

Par of me can't understand at all how people can say that they don't like HIMYM, but I still respect them, as long as they don't go and trash the show or its actors. For my part, I absolutely adore HIMYM!! I started watching it for Aly, of course, but I love the complexity of the show. The characters have been so consistent, fluid and true to themselves ever since the pilot, it's a quality that very few shows have today...also, it is one of the rare shows that manages to make me laugh, along with Big Bang Theory. I know I will laugh my butt off whenever Lily/Barney or Lily/Robin are on screen together (and Lily's constant fantasy about making out with Robin is hilarious!)

This season has been great all in all, but it got better after Marshall's dad died...I'm Canadian and even laughed like crazy at the Glitter episode, lol. I love the girls and Barney so much, and I'm so excited that Lily is FINALLY pregnant!!! I can't wait for next season!!! :)

Gaga 01, i really agree on your opinion on how i met your mother.

i'm beginning to think i am the only one here that has actually come to know buffy through how i met your mother. it was a very boring afternoon in the middle of the week, waiting for the next how i met your mother episode of season 6, when i started to just browse a bit and then got to the wikipedia page of alyson hannigan and then the character page on willow and my eyes fell on "relationships - tara maclay". and i was like "wait... that's a girl's name..." and so i decided that i am bored enough to watch an episode of buffy just because of the fun of watching alyson hannigan kissing another woman. of course i chose "the body" to watch, which is a really bad choice as first episode i think because it is really depressing. my reaction was: "oh my god, buffy's mom, who i have seen alive for like 3 seconds, you can't just die now!" and well, long story short, this is how i came to watch buffy. looking back it's kind of hilarious.
I must go and get ready to play croquet with the Queen.

You may not be the only one, but you are one of the few, lol. That's one of the things I love about HiMYM; all their references to Buffy! The episode (season 1, the Pineapple Incident) where they discuss vampires and its mythology is hilarious :grin You didn't pick the best first episode of Buffy ever to start watching the show but, on the plus side, it was the episode where Willow and Tara kiss for the first time so woohoo!! My first experience was Buffy was no better, the first episodes I saw were Reptile Boy (season 2), Spiral (season 5) and Chosen (season 7). All in the same week. I was messed up for months trying to catch up, lol. But yeah, I'm sure the success of Aly and HiMYM will have bring new Buffy fans, especially with all the guest stars that were on the show. A friend and I really want Sarah Michelle Gellar to be the mom, lol :laugh

I don't really care what anyone says either...I love the show and so does my kid. We just watched 2 of my favorite episodes today: "Woo Girls" and "Not a Father's Day." I mean, who can resist Lily in a cheap kids fire hat awkwardly attempting to assert her "wooness?" Or drunk baby Lily on a rolling office chair being propelled by a fire extinguisher? Ahhh...goodtimes:) I love finding the Buffy references...it's turned into kind of a game.

the first episodes I saw were Reptile Boy (season 2), Spiral (season 5) and Chosen (season 7). All in the same week. I was messed up for months

My first Buffy episodes were Hush, then The Yoko Factor and then Pangs...all season 4, but throughly confused me none-the-less.

OMG...SMG as the mother? Priceless!! I'm seriously hoping that before the show ends that they find some sort of cleaver way to work Amber in as a guest star. I thought they kinda missed their opportunity with the baby names, but I'm hoping that they have something else up their sleeves. :pray

uuuuh, i guess i never realised that there were buffy references in how i met your mother (with the not knowing buffy while watching and all). now i am all excited to watch how i met your mother!

yeah, the reaction after "omg, buffy's mom!" was "omg, lily, stop crying!" and then "uuuuuuh, kiss".

me too, at least for weeks, or probably still am. i watched hush after that and from that point on and when dawn was introduced i actually believed she had been there all along. it was kind of confusing when i found out she was not. but wikipedia helped me a lot when characters were talking about stuff i really didn't understand.

Personally I'd be lobbying (if I knew who to suggest it to; the HIMYM credits don't help much) for Cobie to get the "gay Robin" storyline she wants and to have Amber play the girlfriend.

SMG as the mother is kinda-sorta dependent on her availability, which will be zero if _Ringer_ runs two seasons; ELiza also is committed toa show which looks promising. Actually not many Buff-alums woudl qualify. MErcedes is even more light-complexioned and blonde than Sarah Chalke so their kids wouldn't be as dark as they're shown in the flashforwards (brunette genes being dominant isn't enough.) Charisma, Julie, Juliet and both Lizzes are a bit too old to be compeltely beleiveable, and Amy Acker already played a character in HIMYM.

And I think Marshall and Lily's first child is going to be their son, based on what was said in the "cigarette episode.."

Just watched the season finale on E4. It finally aired in the Uk Yay! I absolutely love How I met your Mother It was the main show that got me into watching Buffy last Summer. Although I actually started watching Angel before Buffy. I've enjoyed how they've teased about who the mother actually is especially the finale psych although I'm glad they said right from the beginning that it wasn't Robin. I've enjoyed the little Buffy references especially dead to me eyes and "The Gentlemen!!" So I can't wait for the next season.

Hahahahahahahaha...I had the same thoughts!!! It was good, I just wish they had MORE Lily in a Lily-centric episode, ya know? I loved the second episode where their first baby outing was to the bar and Robin photographed them holding the baby and doing shots. Fitting, lol.

Finey, Willow_Friendly: I've been hoping for AMber as the Mother all along. She might not want to commit toa season-long arc, though, with th writing and other work. Sarah or Eliza might be available though.

And I like that dream sequence idea. As set-up? Well, Amber could play either a fictional author or herself doing a book signing a couple of the HIMYM characters go to, which might give Lily the idea. Or even a con guest, if BtVS exists in the "Motherverse." (Doesn't mean Lily herself has to be the fan; in either case she could just be along with Marshall or Robin. (Heck, in the Buffyverse, If igure the actors exist; in fact in my own fanfic subverse, there was a sitcom -lately I'm callign it _Bonniemeadow Road_- from Fall '99 to Spring '04 which featured Aly, Amber, Emma, and Nicky as suburban couple neighbors; Dawn is the only one who watched it but Xander has a cousin who's married to AMber's former makeup artist from it.)

So I guess Ted meets "The Mother" this season but *we* won't. I can see, sort of, that maybe they don't want to sign someone this season for one ep. but contract for a long arc for next season. (Maybe they already *have* someone lined up who'sn't available for this season, maybe.)
But it needs to be a big reveal, and *early* in S-9. If they go on with the teasing for most or, persih forfend, the whole season until the final ep., then the renewal will not be worth it, even if it turns out to be Amber.

The season 8 finale was tonight.

I almost jumped up in my chair when I saw the ending!

They showed the Mother! (Though it was not SMG or Amber)

They totally trolled us, giving us this line of dialog from the actress who plays her only having to wait until season 9 (sniffles) starts.
I don't always wonder what it would be like if everything in the world was box shaped, but when I do I play Minecraft.
