In the article she talks about integrity ...

when I asked her whether Tara will be raised from the dead - as her former cohort Buffy was in the sixth series, she says that she was asked to return to play Tara bad, as in evil. She decided against it and faced up to director Joss Whedon.

Thank you. :) I am glad that particular cat is well out of the bag now so it can be discussed openly. I can never thank her enough for what she did. I love to see her act, but there will be plenty of opportunities I'm sure that do not involve tainting the best lesbian relationship on tv ever. I am so very grateful she turned them down, though at the same time I would not have blamed her for a second if she hadn't. She did not have to do what she did, but she did, and that makes me respect and admire her even more than I already did. :heart

Ok, I've just bought the March issue of Diva Mag... and since I'm a devoted and dedicated Kitten, you can expect a transcript in a few hours (I would do it sooner but 1) it's quite a lenghty article, 2) I'm not too good with the whole "typing without looking at the keyboard" thingy and 3) I have to do some work... After all, that's what they pay me for...).

So watch this space! :p

Edited by DrG to remove the non Ghosts of Albion related parts of the interview to prevent this thread from straying too much off topic. The entire interview has been moved to the reopened Diva Magazine UK thread, which is the place to discuss the rest of the interview. :)

Here goes...

No picture of Amber I'm afraid... Just 3 from Ghosts of Albion, which all look pretty good!

WHAT AMBER DID NEXT

Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Tara Maclay may be gone from our screens but the actress who played her, Amber Benson, has been busy writing a new vampire series for the BBC. Jane Czyzselska caught up with her on a visit to London.

Most 25-year-old would be more than happy to sit back, relax and fully enjoy the pleasures that come with being a household name on a major network TV show. But, as her acting career shows, Amber Benson has more to her than most. Best known as the shy and loveable Tara of the cult hit TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Benson is and always has been deeply serious about her art.

Having finished a three-year stint in Buffy as one half of network TV’s longest running teenage lesbian couple, Benson has just embarked on her biggest challenge. In March, the multi-talented star makes her debut on British television with the animated online drama she has co-written and directed. The five part series, Ghosts Of Albion, is a cleverly crafted tale of demons, vampires and ghosts set in 19th-century London.

“I love acting, but writing and directing are really exciting too,” says Benson, who is in London for three weeks putting the final touches to the online drama. “When you act, you have to work hard to get inside a character’s head but, with directing, you’re using a whole different set of muscles.”

INTEGRITY

...

She’s a pro, too. When Chris Golden, co-writer of Ghosts Of Albion and LA Times best-selling author of teen thrillers, was asked recently if he would work with Benson, he told the press he’d work with her on any future projects. Coming from the guy who’s also a Buffy scriptwriter and novelist, that’s praise indeed.

ONLINE

Benson and Golden were approached by the BCC earlier this year to create an online drama reminiscent of Buffy but for a wider audience – something with the trademark Buffy self-referential humour to make the audience feel as though they’re in on the gags. “What we’ve written is a send-up of Jane Austen crossed with mystical ghosts and demons,” Benson explains.

Accessible to all, the new web drama will be available to web users regardless of broadband or dial-up capability. Actors who have been approached to be the voices on the animated drama include Leslie Phillips, who played the quintessential loveable rogue doctor on the comedy classic Carry on Doctor and Anthony Daniels, who played legendary Star Wars’ original robot C3PO.

...

The four part series of Ghosts Of Albion is available to view on www.bbc.co.uk/ghosts from 27 March. There is a new episode each week.

Thank you so much for typing that up. :)

My interest in Ghosts of Albion is even more piqued now.

Oh goodie :grin , I love Jane Austen. I love her clever and often sarcastic sense of humour, I hope that, aside from the time period, she is referring to that as well. I used to like mystical ghosts and demons stories as well, but BtVS almost cured me of that :happy , though I am sure Amber Benson and Christopher Golden will be able to revive my appreciation for the genre.

ooh Jane Austen, I am intrigued. I am having a hard time picturing what this will be like, I can't wait to actually browse it.

And gosh, gay mormons? I can't even imagine, but I'd rather not talk about that here, in the ghosts thread.

I'm really looking forward to this. Cosgrove Hall is a truely inspired choice as Brian Cosgrove + Mark Hall made such an amazing job of 'Danger Mouse'. Leslie Phillips would be a cool choice - terrific voice and genius comic timing. I think this could be something very special.

GOLDEN ON DC'S DR. FATE

February 26, 2003 10:36 AM

by Alex Segura Jr.

"I've just finished a cool project for the BBC online called Ghosts of Albion, which I created and wrote with Amber Benson. It's also about magic and responsibility, about protecting people, defending the world. It's completely different from Doctor Fate, of course, but there are some thematic similarities. The thing is, the protagonists in Ghosts of Albion and Hector Hall in Doctor Fate have both inherited great power and responsibility. The difference is, in Ghosts, they've been chosen to receive this legacy by their grandfather. Hector Hall was chosen, in a sense, by the universe itself. By the forces of Order that bind the universe together. On the one hand, that's quite a vote of confidence. On the other . . . talk about pressure! Try living up to that!"

Golden is working on a number of novels and television projects. "I've got all sorts of things happening, but only a few are comics-related," Golden said. "Ghosts of Albion, which I mentioned before, is an hour-long, animated supernatural drama that will debut on the internet March 27th at www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ It's broken down into five twelve minute segments that will appear weekly through the end of April. Hopefully there'll be lots of news about Ghosts down the line. Amber, who wrote and created it with me, also directed, and the voice talent includes Emma Samms and Anthony Daniels."

BBC hires Buffy actress and writer for web drama

By Brand Republic, London

Following the success of its first two 'Doctor Who' internet dramas, BBCi is to develop a thrilling horror/adventure laced with dark humour and has enlisted two key figures from 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' for the project.

Joining the BBCi Cult team in developing the internet drama are Amber Benson, better known as Willow's girlfriend Tara in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', and Christopher Golden, a prolific writer of 'Buffy' and 'Angel' novels.

Set in the mid-19th century, 'The Ghosts of Albion' is a tale of demons, vampires and ghosts, which the BBC hopes should appeal to 'Buffy' fans.

'The Ghosts of Albion' is set following the death of the famed stage magician grandfather of a brother and sister. However, the brother and sister discover that not all of the old man's magic was performed onstage.

The siblings find themselves the inheritors of an extraordinary legacy, and must bear the burden and the sorcerous power that makes them the mystical guardians of early 19th century England.

As with the previous internet dramas, visitors to bbc.co.uk/cult/ghosts can access the Real Player file episodes.

Each week over the course of five weeks -- from March 27 2003 -- a new chapter of the story will be available, allowing visitors to the website to explore and participate in an expanded online world.

As well as being a talented actress, Benson is also a writer, director and producer and has co-written and directed 'The Ghosts of Albion'.

Her award-winning independent film 'Chance' recently premiered in America and she has written several issues of Dark Horse Comics' 'Buffy' graphic books.

"Chris Golden and I are super excited to be writing 'The Ghosts of Albion'," Benson said. "Being a fan of British broadcasting, it's such an honour to be working with the BBC."

Golden is the LA Times best-selling author of such novels as 'The Ferryman', 'Strangewood', 'Prowlers' and the 'Body of Evidence' series of teen thrillers.

He was the editor of the Bram Stoker Award-winning book of criticism 'CUT!: Horror Writers on Horror Film', and co-author of both 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Watcher's Guide' and 'The Stephen King Universe'.

Martin Trickey, commissioning editor at BBC Interactive Drama and Entertainment, said: "It's wonderful that we are developing what we believe is going to be a truly innovative project with such respected and creative talent."

'The Ghosts of Albion' is the third commissioned series to come out of the cult section of BBCi.

It continues to give rise to a new form of "webtainment", fusing audio drama with comic-strip animation to enhance the internet viewing experience.

Death Comes To Time

This is the webpage for one of the Doctor Who online dramas. The drama's no longer available as their rights only ran for one year, but the website looks good. Hopefully the Ghosts of Albion one will be as good too.

Death Comes to Time was a very well-made production, although personally I didn't care much for the way the story ended. ASH made a cameo appearance as a Time Lord who got killed by the Big Bad.
