How I Met Your Mother

Anything about Willow & Tara, Alyson Hannigan and Amber Benson.

Perhaps we might all hope that CBS decides that the show overall does not work, but instead could use some 'retooling.' "The show needs some work, fellas. How about we shift the focus towards Alyson Hannigan's character?"

MediaWeek reports that HIMYM is losing its audience, that it has dropped each of the four weeks it has been on, and for this past Monday finished 4th in its time slot. With regard to CBS, this is what MediaWeek has to say:

CBS
-Close To Home: too soon to tell.
-Criminal Minds: shoo-in for a full-season renewal.
-Ghost Whisperer: shoo-in for a full-season renewal.
-How I Met Your Mother: waiting for the axe to swing.
-Out Of Practice: on the fence.
-Threshold: expected full season pick-up.

I will be truly sorry to see Aly off the small screen, but there has to a better vehicle for her than this. Give her something with meat- or make Where Lilly Blooms. :party

Uh, I just googled Where Lilly Blooms. :punch

It's disappointing that HIMYM isn't doing well, but Aly definitely deserves better. I'd love to see her in her own sitcom (and Amber in Doctor Who). :-D

I found this week´s episode to have the most amusing moments so far, but whereas the show seems to have improven in some parts it has lost points in others. Aly´s part seems to be shrinking. It is not just my bias speaking when I say that is a big mistake. For me, she and the other woman have the best screen presence by far. The lead man, i.e the ´dad´, annoys me so much that I do not want to watch his big brown eyed quasi innocent deer in the headlight facial expressions for another second. He was just a nasty asshole this week, I did not find his actions amusing or cute in the least. Doogie just annoys me period. Every other comedy show seems to have one stupid and/or nasty best friend persona. I find it terribly unoriginal. I definitely would have given up by now if not for Aly. For her sake I do hope the show will get the chance to finish the season and maybe they can work on it´s weaknesses.

I'm glad for Aly, too. Actually I also like the show for a comedy. And that says a lot because normally I don't like the genre at all. For instance: Friends did nothing for me. So in the end I only watch it because of Aly but it gives me a lot of fun. Till now for me the second and the fourth episode were the best and the funniest. And Aly is great.

The lead character Ted is so lame but the real problem seems to me: I don't like him at all. He is a little brat ass. At least in episode four. How he dumbed Nathalie - grrr. Lily did well for pommeling him. Unlike most of the others I like watching Barney he is a real asshole but funny and a good actor.

On another board someone said the show should be based on the Lily character. But that would mean to rename the show: How I met your father. That's actually not a bad idea. Or maybe I thought - because I also like the Robin character - it could be based on the leading woman characters Lily and Robin and they could start a lesbian relationsship. So the show could keep his title.

A show where Lily and Robin do a little dance, make a little love, and get down tonight or is that go down tonight?
Now that is a premise worth exploring.

Aly was totally hot in her parrot costume last night. I also enjoyed seeing her as Sonny Bono in the flashback. For me, she and Marshall are my favorite characters and I think they steal the show.

I also like Robin - she's funny. I know I see lesbians everywhere, but I could see them going in a coming-out-lesbian direction with her character - she didn't want to get all snuggly with her boyfriend, and her little speech on the roof about "Is there something inside me that's broken?" is a thought process I've had a lot and have heard a lot from other lesbians when they talk about their coming out experience and wondering why relationships with men didn't work out.

Anyway, I suppose we can only dream, but wouldn't it be great for Robin to come out to Lily and Lily could flash back to college before she met Marshall and how she hooked up with her best friend, or some such?

Also, another favorite moment from last night's ep was when they were taking the picture with Aly crouched on the bar and Marshall in the foreground as the pirate, to make it look like she was perched on his shoulder.

Aly was tres cute as the parrot, indeed.

I read an interesting piece of conjecture- since we don't know yet who the lead male married (I have so little interest in him I can never remember his name, LOL), a reader suggested that perhaps the person he ended up marrying was.... Aly!

This is me hopping aboard the Lilly and Robin bandwagon.
Aly in her parrot costume and Robin dressed up as a saltine which Lilly the parrot licks every crystal of sodium off of.
Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "Polly want a cracker."

Well, I have to say that I think that Lily and Marshall are pretty cute together, so I'm not ready for "L&R" just yet . . . (but for Aunt Robin to turn out to be gay? TOTALLY! :party )

GG Lily's costume gives an Austin Power-ish twist to "shaggin' the bird" eh? Out

By the way, the (boring-the-kids) Narrator refers, repeatedly, to "Aunt Lily" . . . so, thank God, Ted does NOT end up w/ Lily!

Oy! SO if there is Aunt Lily, and we know that Robin is also an aunt (from episode one... "And that, kids, is how I met your aunt."), what the heck does that mean? :eyebrow

I wasn't trying to suggest that Robin and Lily would/should hook up, because I LOVE Lily and Marshall. They are a great couple and very cute together. I was just saying that I could see Lily being supportive, and also having moments in her past where she could relate to it

I was looking in the GMP forum for this thread and thought I was going insane when I couldn't find it.

I thought this week's ep was the best yet. It wasn't so much about Ted doing something dorky to try to meet a girl, it was definitely more of an ensemble cast thing. I thought Aly in particular was fantastic - she got to use more of her range and didn't seem like she was just playing a slightly ditzy oversexed chick.

Now I'm thinking that at the end of the series in addition to Ted finding his wife, that Robin and Barney will end up together. They have some kind of back and forth banter going on.

A really cute episode yesterday (11/21), with lots of nice screen time for AH :applause

It was amusing to see her in the company of Marshall's "huge" family which included the yummy Susie Plaxon); it beautifully exploited Alyson's diminutive size! The look of fear on her face at the prospect of giving birth to an infant the size of the turkey was priceless :lmao

The "B" story about the volunteering was also amusing.

I agree, the show is seeming to get better and better and continually makes me laugh. I think I officially like it and will keep watching it.

It was great that AH had so much screen time. I love Marshall; he's so funny.

Robin just gets hotter and hotter.

It looks like the producers and writers of the show have wised up to the fact that the initial one joke premise of the show can't be reasonably sustained over the course of 22 episodes without the folks at P.E.T.A violently protesting over the flogging and/or beating of dead horses.
I, for one, welcome the enhanced screen time of the Lilly/Marshall B-storyline as that means more Aly yumminess and more chance for her to wow us with her unparalleled mastery of non-verbal communication.
Robin does indeed get hotter and hotter with each episode and now I wish Cobie Smulders would have been centered around the girl on girl action in her recurring role on "The L Word".

Agree w/ what everyone else has said: this was a terrific episode---maybe the best yet. (Good to see that they are now unafraid to break-up "the five-some" to do multiple story-lines: it's not All About Ted!). Aly was amazing---

GG OK, let's see who around here is old enough to get this joke: "With a name like Cobie Smulders, you have to be HOT!" Out

(I just recently heard about CS's stint on The L Word: she wasn't in any hot grrl-on-grrl action? Tragic!)

An article by M.E. Fernandez from the LA Times was reprinted in my local paper. The title is "CBS SITCOM IS ANYTHING BUT REGULAR". There is a good deal about the difficulties of filming, along with material about the genesis of the show, which includes the following:

"...the show is sweet and screwball, with Ted, Marshall, and Lily conveying its heart and sentimentality; and Barney and Robin delivering most of the gags.
Bays and Thomas began the casting process wanting Hannigan and Segal for Lily and Marshall. Thomas' wife, Rebecca, a devout 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' fan, agreed to let her husband create a character like her if Hannigan, who played Willow on the series, got her part. Happily for them, Hannigan was searching furiously for a comedy.
'You can relate to everybody or knowing somebody just like that,' said Hannigan, 31."

Actually, I think Alyson now does her fair share of the comedy. :-D

How I Met Your Mother was #8 in Time magazine's Top 10 TV shows of 2005. Here's the write-up:

-8-
How I Met Your Mother
(CBS)

Five witty, good-looking young people dating, hanging out and trading quips in Manhattan. It's a revolutionary idea for a sitcom--in 1994. Overshadowed by more distinctive sitcom debuts this fall, Mother does for the young-urbans comedy what Everybody Loves Raymond did for the bickering-in-laws genre: proves that originality isn't everything. The gimmicky hook--narrator looks back on his courtship from 25 years in the future--is a distraction; what stands out is the crackling dialogue and rapport among the ensemble cast. (When Neal Patrick Harris isn't slipping the show into his tailored breast pocket, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan are so cute you could sprinkle powdered sugar on them and pop them in your mouth.) Mother feels like it's been on for years, and I mean that in a good way; you sense that, just a few epsiodes into the show's run, the writers know these characters inside and out. I can't pretend this is anything but a well-executed Friends ripoff. But I'll be there for them anyway.
Now there's something you don't see every day... unless you're us...
