Amber's film TABOO

Postby emma peel » Sun Aug 18, 2002 3:45 pm

Just got an e-mail from Little Willow. She writes:

Hey everyone!

Two quick little notes about Amber's films. . .

Sweetest Taboo ++

Amber co-stars in Taboo with Nick Stahl, January Jones and other brilliant actors. It was filmed in summer 2001, then screened at Sundance Film Festival in January 2002. It was not released in theatres. It just came out on home video on August 13th, 2002.

Thanks to a fan named Christina, the Chance website now has a forwarding domain:

Be well! Enjoy the films!

I believe Taboo is your typical bad mass-murderer horror-type movie. Didn't Amber say last year that she got to die twice?

I've done a search on Amazon for the video/dvd and I can't find it (Taboo). Has anyone seen it in stores or online yet?

No listing on Amazon. Blockbuster.com lists it as coming soon to DVD and unavailable for rental in any of their stores.

Edited to add blockbuster.com page listing here.

Well officially, of course, I have to say that I have no idea what you're talking about.

the Variety review is:

A minor variant on the successful "I Know What You Did Last Summer" franchise, Max Makowski's "Taboo" still isn't nearly as clever as it thinks it is, nor as fun as it should be to merit its midnight-movie slotting at Sundance. Bucharest-lensed pic, which does clock in at a mercifully brief run time, will sooner lull auds into a peaceful slumber than it will shock or jolt them. But pic should scare up some business, albeit as a vid and cable item.

Pic assembles six perfectly slaughterable twentysomethings in a creaky old mansion and has them play the parlor game of the title, in which they must anonymously submit their answer to a single provocative question. One year later, the group reassembles and finds itself being picked off one by one by a psycho killer with an ax (or, in this case, a shotgun) to grind. Pic is armed with a well-developed sense of its own silliness, but it gets bogged down in unnecessary exposition and a dearth of originality. Only Thomas, doing an amusing riff on his lascivious "American Pie" character, momentarily enlivens things.

and from: film threat

Let's just go ahead and admit this sucked and get that out of the way. What'd you expect from another half-baked, half-finished, high-concept teen thriller? Though not devoid of the requisite plot twist or two, bad acting succeeds in snuffing any spark this dud might have had. Now that I've described the smell, let's take a close look at the corpse. Now fine actors like Eddie Kaye Thomas and Amber Benson can be appealing doing most anything. Nick Stahl needs a little more to do than just look depressed for the first couple of acts. Lori Heuring gets to be a bundle of excitement as the slut but Derek Hamilton comes off a bit too callow to really give a shit about. That would leave the major problem being the utterly dead fish known as January Jones. About the most interesting thing about her is her name. If the film had had a higher production budget, she probably would've been upstaged by the furniture.

(the rest of the reviews aren't even that flattering).

However, it did show at midnight at Sundance, so obviously it seemed like the kind of film that had something going for it.

Well the movies I watched recently were Scary Movie 2 (I'll get my brother back for recommending that one), Rose Red (4 hours of pure tortured boredom :yawn just waiting for something, anything to happen) and Scream 3 (my god is Neve Campbell hot, but what was with Courtney's haircut :stink ).

By the sounds of this movie it's definitely in the same class as those movies. Everytime I rent out another one all I can think is Amber could have done that role much better and why the hell don't they give Amber some of these roles, she's beautiful and SHE CAN ACT. Now finally my wish has come true.

Mwah, I get a bit bored with reading so called serious reviews about movies such as these. I mean dear lord, I don't think a movie like this is meant to be taken serious. We have a nice saying where I live. "Mooi zitten, dom koiken" Does not translate well, but basically it means, just sit there and watch without thinking, maybe one can actually enjoy something without overanalyzing things.

And yeah, last year at Nocturnal Amber told us she died twice, she had a bit of a laugh at that, damn that is a bit ironic now, but anyway I would love to watch this, I like these kind of movies and well I need no other incentive than to know Amber is in looking like this* I hope.

Of the reviews, Amber got high marks all around. But as far as being an independant film and therefore having this air of superiority. Most folks think independant film and think higher quality. However Taboo was consistently rated by all reports, the worst film anyone saw at Sundance last year.

Again, that being said, that Taboo was the worst film, consistently Amber was given high marks as the best thing about Taboo.

Had another mail from Little Willow:

Quote:
Mixed Taboo ++

Premiere magazine listed the film TABOO as coming out in VHS home video on August 13th - last week. Both Amber and I thought this was the correct day for her film to come out, so we were promoting it.

We just found out there was another movie called Taboo that was recently released on home video. Unlike the American-made filmed-in-Romania movie Amber made, this other Taboo is set in 1865, is a Japanese and French film, takes place in a Kyoto samurai fortress, and has subtitles. I'm cracking up right now.

We're trying to track down the correct release date for the Amber-inclusive Taboo film now. I'll keep you all posted.

that's only since the oscars in the "year of the independant film".... the ironic amusing part is considering some of the big budget really crappy films that are made. i can enjoy an uber crappy young adult starring horror flick, no matter how badly written and/or conceived it is, ten times more (20 because amber's in this one) than some shite like "dude where's my car" that some doofus in a suit decided should have millions shelled out to get made. i mean, at least an indie flick that sucks when it's done isn't an insult to its viewers bank accounts. right?

You know, maybe it's all an attempt to *sound* official... when I'm doing personal business under the guise of "reporting" I use a lot of "we"s

See me in B'Ham? That's "official" business... "we" are covering the Sidewalk Film Festival. "We" are representing Auburn University.

"We" are sooooo cooooollll. (But Xita's still the coooollleeesttt)

Did any of that make sense?

Well, I'm more than willing to sit through a bad movie to see a good performance by a great actress. So, bad reviews or no, I still hope I can find and see the movie.

However, much higher on my list is, of course, "Chance". I mean, written and directed by, as well as starring Amber! How much better do you get than that?! I expect that one to be great, IF I ever get to see it.

Gotta agree with you, snakesssz, about what I would be willing to sit through...

After all, I was willing to sit through both "American Pie" movies (ugh) and even "Hayley Wagner, Star" (double ugh) just for a glimpse of our beloved AH:drool . And don't even get me started on what it took to sit through episodes of "The Torkelsons/Almost Home".....
