In this week's issue of PARADE, James Brady chats with actress Alyson Hannigan, whose latest movie, American Wedding, opens Aug. 1. Now that her long-running job as Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer has ended, and the American Pie series has reached its conclusion, does Hannigan have any new projects lined up?
"No, now I'm trying to figure out what's the next step and meeting with people," Hannigan says. "I'm not rushing into things. I'm fortunate enough to realize I don't have to rush so I'm figuring things out."
Maybe Hannigan could write a script based on her experience of meeting her half brother from her father's second marriage. "He was brought up in Europe and I didn't meet him until I was an adult," she explains. "And when we finally met it was rather strange, very Oprah Winfrey Show."
How did Alyson Hannigan handle the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer after seven years on the show? Find out in this week's "In Step With."

In Step With Alyson Hannigan
By James Brady
We've just said goodbye to her on TV's Buffy. On Aug. 1, Alyson Hannigan is back for her third helping of Pie, and this time they're calling it American Wedding.
She is a redhead. Irish and both sexy and funny. The vivacious and delightful Alyson Hannigan is back on the big screen in the third edition of the hit American Pie movies, titled American Wedding.
"I worked on the first one only seven days," said Alyson, who played Michelle the flute player. And critics said she stole the sequel. Now she's back for the whole trip in American Wedding opening Aug. 1. The amazing thing is, said Alyson, "I did all three on my days off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer." She played Willow, the gay witch, on the popular television series.
When Hannigan and I spoke, she was just back from vacationing in Europe with her fiance, Alexis Denisof, a former co-star on Buffy. She had a little head cold and a sore throat. I thought it made her sound even sexier. Where in Europe were they? "London," Alyson said. "I love London. My fiance has a house there in Notting Hill, but he was having work done so we stayed glamorously in a hotel in Covent Garden. He may trade in the house and get something smaller. It's too big for us."
That sounds as if she and Alexis - who's now on the tv series Angel - are pretty serious. "There's no marriage date yet," Alyson told me. "but we're getting there".
Since Buffy had just gone off the air after its long and extraordinary successful run, I asked Ms. Hannigan to look back on the experience.
"I was on the show for seven years,"she said. "I stayed for the entire run." What was that last day's shooting like? Relief or bittersweet?
"It was very, very strange," said Alyson. "We were happy but a little bittersweet, saying goodbye as each scene ended. There were tears and hugs - that's how close we were, how good it was." So a series like that isn't just another job?
"Oh, my God, no,"she said. "I have friends for life!"
Brady's Bits
Alyson Hannigan's train of thought was interrupted during the interview. "You OK?" I asked. "Yes, just a cat crisis," she said. Her cat had gotten its claws caught on something - and it was Alyson to the rescue! And not for the first time, since Hannigan got the cat from a pound, which she believes is the "right way" to find a pet.
I'd read that Alyson was born near the White House. "I'm told that," she said. "But I can't remember. The closest hospital to the White House, I guess. "
Hannigan's parents divorced when she was 2, and Alyson grew up in Atlanta with her mom. By the time she was 4, she'd done her first commercial - for Duncan Hines. She first got to California on a visit to her dad and had her first auditions there. In 1988, she landed a part in My Stepmother Is An Alien, playing Dan Aykroyd's daughter, and her career was launched.
Had she seen a final cut of American Wedding? "I saw the 60-second trailer, and that was very funny," said Alyson. "And we had a good feel while we were making it. But, in this business, you never know."
