Aly interview in Der Spiegel

Postby kajo 2000 » Sun Aug 17, 2003 2:48 pm

There is a new Aly interview in the German publication Der Spiegel.

As the interview is in German, I was wondering if any German-speaking Kittens would please be kind enough to translate it into English? It is fairly short - Aly was only asked 3 questions - just click on the above link to go directly to the relevant page on Der Spiegel's website.

[I see that Der Spiegel has a summary in English of a few of its stories from the previous week but they only seem to be for political or current affairs articles, not for entertainment. I also tried using an online automatic translator but some of the words would not translate into English and I don't really want to post an inaccurate transcript, especially when someone is being quoted.]

Thanks in advance.

Heh, I get Der Spiegel weakly and was just reading it today and skimming through and woah, nice surprise there. I will go and give a translation, gimme some minutes.

edited cos I am done with the translation:

Please be kind, I did it in a hurry and there might be some mistakes.. :blush not in the content though.

Often sex is ridiculous

The actress Alyson Hannigan, 29, about sex-jokes, lesbian love-scenes and her role at the cinema movie “American Wedding”.

Spiegel: Ms: Hannigan, like the first two sensationally successful teeny comedies the third part offers a whole lot of drastical sex-jokes. What’s the fun about such salacious jokes?

Hannigan: If it’s about sex we all tend to make a fool of ourselves. Think about your first sex and how clumsy most of us were, think about the pressure we got ourselves under when we were teenagers. Because most of us have embarrassing experiences it’s so entertaining to watch others doing the same.

Spiegel: In the “American Pie” movies you play some kind of wallflower role. Don’t you want to be the sexbomb once who gets adored by all the guys?

Hannigan: Actually not. If you play the sexy babe you always have to be afraid that soon there will be another one who’s butt is sexier. I see it as a challenge to play characters the audience is interested in not only because of their looks. It’s not an accomplishment to have big tits. Besides, I always was wilder. I have always been more enthusiastic about football and martial arts than about shopping sprees.

Spiegel: You are not only drawing attention to you with the “American Pie” trilogy but also due to your team role in the TV-series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. How did your fans react that you played a young lesbian witch?

Hannigan: Of course there are still reservations in the USA about homosexuality. Some viewers have been outraged but the overall reaction was positive. I have gotten a lot of letters from girls who liked the character particularly. For me as an actress its: Love is love. But kissing scenes with women are more pleasant to shoot – men tend to have bad breath or aren’t shaved and have scratchy stubbles. Women are softer and smell better.

"Sex is often laughable"

The 29 year old actress Alyson Hannigan talks in an interview for der Spiegel about sex jokes, lesbian love scenes and her role in American Wedding.

Spiegel: Ms.Hannigan, as with the first two very successful American Pie teen comedies, the third part offers all sorts of radical sex jokes. What's so funny about racy jokes?

Hannigan: When it comes to sex we all make ourselves look pretty silly. Just think about the first time and how awkward almost all of us are, think about the way we let ourselves be pressured as teenagers. Because a lot of us had embarassing experiences it is so entertaining to watch others in that same situation.

Spiegel: In the American Pie movies you sort of play a wallflower type. Wouldn't like to be a sexbomb for a change, admired by all men?

Hannigan: Not really. When you play the sexy babe you'll be worried all the time that very soon someone will come along who has an even prettier ass. I see it as a challenge to play a character that the audience will be interested in for more than her looks. It's not an accomplishment to have big tits. Aside from that, I've always been a bit wild. Football and fighting sports have always interested me more than shopping sprees.

Spiegel: Aside from the American Pie trilogy you've especially caused a sensation as co-star in the TVserie BtVS. How have your fans reacted to the fact that you play a lesbian witch on the show?

Hannigan: Of course there is still prejudice against homosexuality in the USA. Some people who watched the show have cried out in disgust, but most reactions have been very positive. I've received a lot of letters from girls who really care about this character. For me as an actress it's like: love is love. Though kissing scenes with women are more pleasant to shoot. Men have bad breath more often and are often unshaven and their stubble scratches. Women are softer and smell better.

Hee Lindy, I did not expect any other continental europeans to be up this late :p

Edited to explain a bit, see what happened was that I was typing this up and posted and then I saw that Lindy had also posted to say she would type it up and then she edited in her translation before seeing my post and then I edited mine out and then I edited it back because it took me 5 minutes of my life to type it up darn it, at least it proves how translating can subtly change things from person to person, but the most important question no.3 is pretty clear. Hee, bad breath and stubble, take that gentlemen. :laugh

I have to laugh...just for kicks I took a glance at the German text and I have to say that Europeans who complain about how many "Americanisms" are creeping into their languages are correct!

For instance:

German for "sex bomb" = "Sexbombe"

German for "teen" = "Teenie"

German for "tits" = "Titten"

As a Francophone, I can tell you that the same phenomenon is also occurring in French:lol

BTW, are there any interviews with AH in current French magazines???

Women are softer and smell better!

Gee, isn't Amber the only woman she's kissed so far? Credits and kudos for Amber...we know she smells wonderful, ala Herbal Essence, and good breath to boot!

Lucky Aly...

oh no, even beyond buffy Aly's kissed other girls. So she's had some experience, still one can't help but think of that day when they kissed hundreds of time for The Body :p

Oh really? I had no idea she was experienced...or had more experience, per se. Not that Howard Stern is an inidicator for truth but Aly did say she had kissed other gals to get back at guys.

Well, I suppose practice makes perfect and they had to kiss dozens of times to make it look less like they were ready to jump in the sack during the Body, according to Aly, if memory serves.

Again, I say, lucky for those two!

Well she kissed that girl at the MTV movie awards a couple of years ago, it was a small funny scene to introduce best kiss. Though I am not sure you could really call it a kiss, it was more a clash of tongues. As odd as it may sound, it did not seem intimiate enough to count as a kiss where stubble could be an issue had it been a guy, though breath would be another matter. Anyway I bet it wasn't just the Body kiss that took many takes to get it just right. So I'm guessing Amber may be the main point of reference on comparing kisses between men and women, but it does not really matter, I think it's a safe bet to concur that most women are stubblefree and I am sure they would be smart enough to -for example- not eat a ton of garlic the day before.

Thanks for the translation Lindy and Garfield.

And as for this...

That's true Garfield but then again there are some women who have so much stubble, you could peel an apple using their face :paranoid

I think it's funny actresses always say that, makes you wonder how many of those actors just don't brush their teet or put on some deodorant before some nice scene with an actress.

You'd think they would, even if you aren't interested in making a good impression on your co-star, at least you would want to make sure you do not indirectly end up in an interview like this. This seems easily avoidable. Odor TV does not exist yet, so there really is no need to literally stink in order to be in character. :stink

Actually, "Titten" (singular "Titte") is a fairly old German word...

In this case you don't have an anglicism but rather a proof of how closely related German and English are.

As one of the chemistry profs at my university (an Englishman) said it: "English is a North German dialect."

You're right and in Dutch the word for tits is "tieten", maybe the word migrated to England instead of vice versa. There are more words I can think of in the English language that come from other European languages, and vice versa as well of course.

And now I am going to sit back and marvel how a little Aly interview could turn into talk about the origin of tits.
