I'm not one for feedback (sad, I know!), but this fic soooo deserves praise. You, Ms. Phoenix, are a wonderful writer. I loved The Lamb, and if possible, this fic is even better. I await the update with bated breath :) Bravo!

Christ, Jen, you really know how to make the emotions team bubble, don't you? You are the Apocathery, here is the Den and you have damned us all to hold on to each precise word, trembling and desperate.

...but don't worry, that's a good thing :D

First, let me explain: my Wednesday evenings this semester are spent in a classroom for film screenings as part of my Southeast Asian film class. Loosely translated, it's a Bollywood class and Wednesdays are when we see the films. It's interesting and I'm learning a lot, but as the films are in Hindi, I must stay concentrated on the screen because if I look away, I miss the subtitles! It's trickier to read a movie than it is to see it, but it just makes the dibsing game that much more fun.

Anyway, these chapters. My god, these chapters. If ol' Mayor Wilkins knew you made him President here, I'm sure he would have given you a medal and made you part of his staff. But he isn't, he's dead, and I'm quite glad for that. His charm is what makes him all the more terrifying, and Tara knows this. If she's over 500 years old and he's over 500 years old, I wonder how their paths mixed? I believe you'll tell us(in all due time, of course) and I don't think the story will be pretty. All the hints allude to something darker than the ink she breeds.

How will Tara get all the ink before Wilkins comes back with Willow's involvement?

And my GOD, that chapter with Willow in the den? I'm complete and utterly hooked and dripping on each word. I can't even describe how powerfully your words grip me, utterly and completely. It was magnificent and my heart is tense at the seams. What happened between Jenny and Willow? That mark must have made Willow do a 180, and I can't wait to know what happens.

Jen,

I'm so sorry to be so AWOL right now. I still can't bring myself to jump back into Pens, as much as I miss it. It still just makes me way too incredibly heartsore. I truly hope to be back someday, and you should know that this is the fic I'll start with when that day dawns. You really are an amazing writer.

I hope you had a magnificent time in NY. Experience of a lifetime for you, eh?

Still hoping for you that love swings your way and sweeps you off your feet!

Phoenix,
I found this after reading The Lamb so I am a little late coming in, sorry :)

My... what a complex and intriguing story you've created here. I am so enthralled I can hardly wait for an update. So many questions to be answered, so much speculation going on in my head. :hmm

I like Warrior Willow, it's a different type of "warrior" for her character. The way she stole into Tara's locked space, she was all business, and in the end showed compassion for her. I was a little nervous about that encounter until then. Although the encounter isn't over yet is it? :)

Giles, Jenny, Spike, and even Faith have different roles here, working for Willow. I am curious about that, although maybe it is what it is for this fic. hmmm?

So far loving it and looking forward to the next update!

Hey, no wonder you were so proud of this chapter, you have every reason to be, it was divine!

I never could've imagined Willow and Tara's next meeting would go like that and now I'm anxiously waiting my next fix.

I'm still wondering what Jenny told Willow, you'll tell us soon, right?

Part 1

Funny factoid: Googling "poppy den" turns up this story as #1 result.

The atmosphere created by the opening chapter is wonderful. I liked learning about Willow through Tara's eyes...and wow, how different this Tara is, outwardly.

Of course, I'm curious what the offering of Tara's dream will be, as well as the story behind the Cracker Jack ring.

The Romanian is something like "Beware the man of God," which is utterly shivery, after having read The Lamb...

Part 2

That poor purse, with all its Willow-clutching.

(I am a demon.)

Ah, this spells more things out, doesn't it?

Curious that Tara is able to read so much both by careful observation and seemingly other-worldly intuition.

Again, the character of Tara is wildly different from that we know, but is fascinating nonetheless. I continue to enjoy her view of things.

Part 3

Hee. Loved that C.S. Lewis was a client.

So sad that something as simple as caring, as wondering whether another is okay, is such a rarity.

And now I'm starting to wonder about Willow's wealth, as well.

I'm thinking she'll kiss her on the forehead. Why? 'Cause it'll drive me crazy. ^_~b Maybe Willow will kiss her. Please let Willow kiss her...

Sounds like Tara has a horrible nightmare in exchange for giving a dream, similar in spirit to her character in The Lamb. Wonder what else she gains from it; I doubt that she is just doing this as penance for things past.

(more to come as I read)

Wow again, friends. Thank you for such response to the last chapter. Let's not delay this fix any longer...

Nue - Congrats on the dibs. How can I do this? I LOVE doing this. Dangling my readers on the edge of my thread is what gives me kicks in life. I'm seriously so happy everyone likes this so much. I'm having a blast writing it. There's a lot more to come.

Carnegie Hall charges like $2,000 per video, so unfortunately there aren't any. All we have are secret blackberry pictures and you can't even tell which one is me. Sigh. Oh, well. Off to Nashville next!

ophelia11 - Life totally gets in the way of the REAL priorities, doesn't it? I'm glad you're able to pop in now and then and leave a comment - it is so appreciated! Wasn't it fun that it was Wilkins? When I got that brainwave, I about stopped in my tracks. He's perfect for this. Oh, you just wait and see what happens next as we step into Willow-land.

Zampsa - Sigh. It would be nice for them to have an uninterrupted talk, but that just wouldn't be my style, would it? Not that I aim to prolong the angst, but have I ever got some delicious stuff coming. Nice and slow. Enjoy!

Shai - Thanks for tuning in. I know it's hard to leave feedback; I'm guilty of it myself. I'm just glad you are enjoying this. Chime back in when you can, and I hope you continue to enjoy!

MelCar19 - The suspense is like the ooey gooey cheese on a great pizza, that just stretches and stretches until it snaps. Besides the fact that I'm hungry, I hope you enjoy the next update.

Zooey's Bridge - Can I have a little evil laugh? Please?

Bwahaha.

K, I'm done. I love the allusion that I am the Apothecary and this is my den and these little chapters are your own maddening opium fixes. You hit the nail right on the head - how is Tara going to fill her quota with Willow in the way? I guess we'll find out soon, I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Or, you know, shortly thereafter. Uh, with the whole pizza cheese thing?

I sent that chapter to Jen (masterjendu) and she pretty much had the same reaction, that open mouthed oh. my. god. I'm glad you liked it, Rach. Good luck getting a dibs in through the Bollywood.

taraslove - Jude, I've been thinking of you. I chastise myself regularly on not emailing, but apparently I need more chastisement. Take your time, honey, I'm just glad to see you at all. We'll be here when you're ready for us.

As for love, there happens to be this girl in my chorus... Time will tell!

Little Bit - I'm glad you're enjoying it. I hope I never go too over the top with emotion, just enough to slide you inside the story with me. You won't have long to wait, another fix coming right up!

irishgrl2 - Better late than never. I'm happy you could join us. Besides, I could pull this story out for at least fifty chapters. We'll see. This particular encounter between Willow and Tara is far from over. I'm very excited to show you what happens next. You're gonna get a little bit of new information, but not enough.

Bwahaha.

Sorry. Slipped out. Enjoy!

ceridwen - Wow. Divine? I wouldn't have gone that far, but I'm sure glad everyone enjoyed it so much. As for what Jenny told Willow, I'm not sure if I'll ever reveal it in words. I haven't planned on it, yet, but we'll see what happens with flashbacks as we go on. Don't worry, the story will keep on rolling. There's going to be a big dishout today. I hope you like it.

jasmydae - I hope you're not getting spoilers, but I'm really happy to see you here. Thanks for chiming in. So, the Romanian is close to what you have, but has a little more sinister side to it, more like Beware the man marked by God, which could either make them good or evil.

As for how it turns out, you'll just have to keep reading! I'm glad you're here, Megan. I hope you find time to work on Constants, as well, because I'm enjoying it!

That is everyone, and again I'm very excited about what I'm about to share. I hope you like it.

Big hugs as always to masterjendu, for being the best beta in buffydom. (I love alliteration.)

No gift

Some years ago, Willow had a contract in Rumania, a rescue and extraction. It had been her first visit to that particular country. Her first impressions had left all her senses in a state of overload; her eyes bombarded by the vibrant greens of the gardens and the garish cement block architecture of tract housing, her ears trying to make sense of the romantic language that had just a tint of Slav in it, and her nose assaulted by garbage and the wet gassy smell of death.

It had been high summer, and the scorching sun had decided to slay a goodly number of street dogs; their bodies lay where they expired on sidewalks, until their fur was chewed away by maggots and their muscles gleaming and swelling with decomposition until they burst like melons.

Like chewy fireworks.

She had never eaten better bread; she and Xander gorged themselves on it until they were silly. When he discovered the chocolate hazelnut spread known as Finete, he gained five pounds.

In the underground one day waiting for the train, so hot she wished she could just peel off her entire skin, Willow saw something that changed her life forever.

It could have been a boy.

He could have been nearly nine years old.

His eyes were glassy and red-rimmed; he was high on the deafening smell of glue, a grey metallic goop held in a brown paper bag called a punga. He himself smelled like an open sewer, dirt and oily grime collected in every crevice of skin or ratty clothing.

That was not why Willow suddenly felt nauseous and gripped Xander's hand, her throat closing in sympathy, clenching his hand until her knuckles shone white.

Some time in the horrific past of this maybe nine year old boy, someone had broken both his arms and both his legs and set them backwards. His knees and his elbows flexed the wrong direction. The boy could not walk; he crabbed about on the heels of his palms and the heels of his bare feet and begged for money. When he opened his mouth, his rotting teeth looked like brown icicles.

(da'm si mie)

Willow was nearing her first million dollars, but she did not give this boy a single leu. Money would be his death sentence; either he would be beaten and robbed of any sum she gave him, or he would use it to buy more drugs, until his liver gave out in a great flood of jaundice and his eyes bloodened until bursting. With great regret, Willow realized there was nothing she could give him that wouldn't lead to his downfall, neither clothes nor shoes nor food; each act of compassion would instantly merit an act of robbery or worse.

(God died with Buffy.

violently)

He rested on his behind on the cool and dusty tiles of the underground, plucking at her legs, and her eyes were fixated on those horrifying backwards elbows.

When the train finally came, Willow tore herself from his dirtied claws and did not look back. With Xander's arm around her shoulders they departed the station and never saw that boy again. It was not the first evidence she had collected of the shameful inhumanity of the world, the great indifference that separated men from women, the rich from the poor, the dark-skinned from the light, even before names were uttered like Muslim or Gyptian.

Gyptian. Her contract at the time had been to rescue and extract a Gyptian witch. Janna of the Kalderash, who had changed her name to Jenny to hide herself and offered service to Willow to pay her blood debt. Her greatest protection came from being one of Willow's staff.

The world had wronged this boy and that Gyptian more than anyone Willow had ever known.

(has Giles seen Jenny's scars?)

Until now.

In the last seven days, Willow had come to the conclusion that there was a chance that this Tara, this apothecary, had been even more maligned by mankind than Jenny and the nameless crippled Rumanian boy. She had only to test her hypothesis in a controlled manner.

Never was Willow so sad to be proven right.

And now, with Tara's soft skin underneath her fingers, her luscious scent driving Willow insane with thirst and desire, Willow thought back to that boy and grew sad at the comparison. Could she give anything to this woman that would not lead to her downfall? Would there be any gift that could not be stripped away by those more powerful than she?

If the boy had asked for it, Willow would have killed him, in the hopes that he would find peace in the Afterlife. Maybe there he could play soccer, and build tree-forts, and alternate between chasing girls and scorning them. Upon defending a bright maiden's honour in the schoolyard, she would give him a kiss on the cheek; he could touch it and remember just how sour the Earth was in comparison.

No pungas with their bright high smell.

Willow had come to the poppy den today prepared to kill. She chose her battle clothes so very carefully, planned her entrance and exit, had prepared at least a dozen plans based on various contingencies. She had practiced her one-sided conversation in a mirror at home until she felt she could deliver it without unnecessary emotion. The last time she had come to the den she had come as a supplicant, meek and blindly faithful, all for a dream.

Not now. Never again.

(I will not be caught by surprise.)

It was looking as if compassion were a gift that Tara could not accept, which made Willow's heart sorrow all the more.

(no gift)

Even while her fingers touched Tara's cheeks, her slate blue eyes the only world Willow could now see, Willow sensed that Tara was about to fight back. The world had hurt her that deeply by its continued abuse; she shied away from a soft touch as would a whipped cur. She could not allow Willow nor her empathy. There was a titanic struggle in Tara's eyes, a struggle that Willow recognized all too clearly.

She had seen it often enough in her own mirror.

(if you let someone in, they can hurt you)

So many walls, and steel vault doors, and veils of adamant and iron. Far better to keep the world at a distance, and pretend that there was nothing wrong.

Willow's compassion a weapon now, more dire and menacing than any sword, and they both knew it.

What was Tara thinking of, that made her jaw tight, and her eyes hard? And had Willow really prepared a plan for this sort of outcome?

(more than a dozen different designs)

And it happened again, as it happened at first, and Willow felt like crying. Not only for the broken and jaded woman in front of her, but also because she knew she was about to be rejected again. How many times would Willow be discarded, and could her heart possibly take much more abuse?

(we're both mongrels here)

Tara deliberately took a step back, and Willow's hands fell to her sides. Tara's face closed off, she drew her lips in a thin line, and she said, “You should not have come back, Willow.”

Even though Willow knew the words were coming, they still stung. She looked at the apothecary, and the woman in front of her was alarming and cold, a Siren with no human heart, no better than a beast, really, who hunted the weak of mankind, preying on their inadequacies and their fears, gorging on their dark desires like a bloated spider nursed with fell meats and foul potions.

Willow's fingers felt cold now that they were no longer touching Tara's skin.

Willow was not so easily fooled, not with the knowledge she attained all this past week, starting with Jenny's surprising revelation. This time Willow could see through the apothecary as if she were a mere pane of glass.

Tara's ready transformation into a destroying Sphinx causing Willow more anguish than ever before. Was this a compulsion, or did Tara really wish Willow never to return?

And if the apothecary thought Willow could be swayed so easily, then she really knew nothing about her.

(remember the rumanian boy?)

Every gift a dangerous one, and only by being ignored could he be free to live. For the sake of the apothecary Willow had this one moment to decide on her course of action, not knowing what either outcome would end up being. Give Tara what she so plainly needed, knowing it would lead to her destruction, or leave her to seek that destruction on her own?

Willow would always remember their kiss. Nothing could take that from her.

Decide, Willow. Will you love her, will you kill her, or will you walk away?

(it's no longer my decision

it is hers)

“Did you really think you could fool me that easily?” Willow asked, staring Tara directly in the eyes, gambling with every expectant part of her soul. “What is it you are trying so hard to protect me from?”

“Protect you?” Tara said, and then she laughed with a clear note of derision, crossing her arms in front of her chest. “You mean nothing to me. You are but one of thousands, Willow, who come to my door. I kiss all of them. What makes you so special?”

Willow could not be goaded so easily, not when she could remember the taste of Tara's lips. Not when Tara, mere minutes ago, had been so supple and fragile before her.

And her heart constricted in even greater pain, knowing what she did of Tara and her mark, seeing every word that came from Tara's mouth as an eternal sacrifice. Tara must feel for her a great deal to try so hard to push Willow away.

The game was getting dangerous, and Jenny's warnings rang in her head.

(don't go back to the den, Willow)

“You are not as clever as you think you are,” Willow replied, her voice grim. “But you are telling the truth, aren't you? You would have me kill you. You would have no other.”

Oh those eyes! Slate and ice and deep and cold. A blue haunted by the remembrances of sunny skies and swimming pools and blueberries with cream. Tara was in them, and Tara was winter.

“How much do you hate me, Willow?” Tara asked. “Would you rather destroy me than kill me?” The woman lifted her hands and showed her empty palms, as if her weapon were in her hands and not in her lashing tongue. “I assure you, that is what you are doing right now.”

“No less than you deserve, though, is it, Tara?” Willow shot back, injecting the necessary venom in her voice even as her heart ached for her. “How long have you fed on the miseries of mankind? How long have you tainted our dreams? You are the devil, and the world should be rid of you.”

“Then do it, Willow,” Tara said, and she bent to pick up Willow's sword. Paralyzed for a moment by Tara's grace, her sinuous movements and that bewitching scent, it took Willow a moment to realize that the apothecary had again unsheathed the sword, and was pressing the hilt into Willow's palm. “Free mankind of me. Make them safe. That's what you do, isn't it? You are the self-appointed Saviour of the world, righting wrongs, wielding the hand of justice by the blade of a knife. How many have died at your hand, Willow? No wonder you don't sleep at night.”

Willow just as swiftly tossed the blade to the floor again. “An easy end for you then, Apothecary? What if I would rather destroy you slowly like the Angel of Death that I am?”

“I should have expected nothing less,” Tara shot back.

“You should have expected something more,” Willow replied, her mind screaming that this was it, this was the moment she had been leading up to. Her wildly beating heart a tattoo in her chest, Willow said, “do you really think I would punish a whipped mongrel dog before punishing the Master who holds the leash?”

Tara could not control her face this time. A flash of startled white, her eyes wide, her mouth opening in a small O of surprise. Before the apothecary could prepare a counter-attack, Willow asked, “Just how long have you been a slave, Tara?”

Tara looked completely winded, as if Willow had punched her in the stomach, but she mastered her face quickly. “You need to leave, Willow. Now.” With her finger, she pointed at the locked vault door.

Willow shook her head. She almost regretted the tactics she was using, how she was battering down Tara's defences, slicing into the armour Tara had tried to shield herself with. By word and deed, she would reduce Tara to rubble.

Naked and defenceless, Tara would find she could still stand her ground. With every protection stripped from her, Tara would discover her own worth. By all the gods, if this was the only way to show Tara how beautiful and deserving of happiness she was, then Willow would do it, no matter how it hurt.

Then freedom would taste all the sweeter.

She only hoped Tara would forgive her when it was all over.

More careful now than at any other point of this surreal encounter, Willow stepped forward and caught Tara's wrist in her hand. With her other hand she peeled away the filmy fabric that rustled near the crook of Tara's elbow. The mark was there, the mark that Jenny recognized.

The Apothecary froze.

Assaulting Tara with her compassion, her rich voice throbbing with emotion, Willow looked Tara so very carefully in the eyes, even as she touched that mark with the tips of her hungry fingers. “This mark, Tara. One of the most closely guarded secrets of the world.”

Willow could feel the trembling in Tara's hands, she could sense that Tara was becoming dizzy and faint.

And the last, biggest gamble of them all, both of their futures hanging on this one moment. Willow still held Tara's wrist with her one hand, and lifted the other, drifting it upward, Tara like the mongrel whipped cur she was, cringing and almost reeling away from the touch.

She had been abused for so very long.

Willow's hand plunged eagerly into Tara's hair, and it was a warm glade of golden honey, and her neck was as soft as Willow remembered. Holding the back of Tara's head with her hot, lithe fingers, Willow breathed, “You are a genie, Tara, and someone very evil has your collar.”

To be continued on Saturday with Chapter 16 "Flawed Design"

Jen

On a side note, that little Romanian boy exists. I saw him with my own eyes at a subway station in Bucharest in 1999. The sight of him is forever seared in my brain. I can only hope there is enough love and compassion in this world to clear the debts mankind makes by such actions.

:sob poor Tara. I'm glad Willow can see through her bravado though.

That paragraph was my favorite.

This just keeps getting better. Can't wait till Saturday.

Great update!

Willow is a smart cookie for figuring all of this out (Oh and Jenny too! Can't forget about her!)

Now if only Tara will allow her to help! But I dunno if things will happen that fast, you like to kill with the suspense!

Love the story so far, cant wait for more.

Amazing. Utterly amazing. The little boy made me want to cry. I am curious though just exactly what Willow learned to make her come to the conclusion that Tara had been even more wronged...
This story is continuing beautifully and I can't wait to read more.

My god that was beautiful ... and I too have travelled to places and seen atrocities that have made me weep that the human race is on a path of self destruction. But hope springs eternal when I see that there is compassion and love in the world ... just not always enough in my humble opinion.

Lol, I have! You liked it?

And Ms. Phoenix, again, I am left speechless. Time and again you satisfy our need for an update, and leave us beging for more, all at once!

That was certainly an intense update! Your descriptions of Romania was so haunting... Can't believe you witnessed it for yourself.

Gyptian. Her contract at the time had been to rescue and extract a Gyptian witch. Janna of the Kalderash, who had changed her name to Jenny to hide herself and offered service to Willow to pay her blood debt. Her greatest protection came from being one of Willow's staff.

I was wondering how Jenny came to work for Willow, nice touch. :) You know I always liked her character, I'm glad she is in your fic!

I see you're not finished with the Willow and Tara standoff... The tension in that room is almost unbearable. I am hoping that Tara will break (not literally of course) and that she will get swept up into Willow's arm's, but that would be too easy righ? Sorry, I am the hopeless romantic. :luv

I did not see the genie part coming though, well done on that!

Looking forward to your update!

I absolutely loved following Willow along for this chapter. Her smarts have never been in question, but you've taken her intuition to an entirely different plain. The way she meticulously practiced for this meeting and responded to Tara was so telling of her nature. It was heartbreaking to watch each woman "up the ante" so to speak, in hopes of shielding themselves from more pain. The careful revelation of Tara was rough and tender all at once. Perhaps Willow will share a bit of herself to garner that trust. Whatever happens, I'm totally hooked!

I always find the imagery of your stories so rich and vibrant and they bring about a myriad of emotions. The description of the little boy is one of the most haunted things I've ever read, so I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like to witness. It was not only how you described him, but the difficult truths of his situation through Willow's thoughts. Your writing is exceptional. Thanks, as always, for sharing.

2000 dollars? dear lord, I can´t make that in 4 months!! and if my band got paid like $100 each presentation, I´d really happy XDDD

and.. this chapter got me... I read in the late night after a really hard day at work (and being at college again is HARD!), so I could think a lot about this piece... the rumanian boy reminded me about the kids here in Rio, and Willow´s reaction didn´t surprised me...

This ready-to-slice-your-throat Willow really scares me... but now, I´m praying to all deities to give her force to save Tara...

really nice chapter, thanks! :peace

Hello kittens on withdrawal...

I have bad news.

I have warned you that this is my dessert fic. As it happens, my other fic, which is the rewrite of The Lamb, is nearly completed, so I have been working on it nonstop ever since I got back from New York. The Apothecary has taken a back seat, and will probably stay there until Mistletoe is finished.

Mistletoe will be finished in less than a week.

So, when I take my breather from Mistletoe and send it away to various editors, that is when I will have all the time in the world to work on The Apothecary.

Thank you for such enthusiastic interest in this little fic. I hope not to keep you waiting too long.

Va pup pe toti!

Hi I've been away from the board for a few years and just recently found it again.
I just want to say thank-you because The Lamb was the first fic I read when I came back and this is the second and you've reminded me what I loved most about this site.. the great fics.
So thank-you :applause

Hey there,
So Willow's shown up again and she has her connection to Tara as well as having knowledge of Tara's situation. I almost wonder if that won't be more disturbing to Tara than thinking Willow hates her. Now the question is what she'll do with that.

I'm not sure what you mean by getting spoilers?

(edit: Oh, I get it. You mean the googling. No spoilers. I was hoping to place the story's decade.)

Part 4

Her thumbs were mimicking Tara's thumbs, finding that exquisite hollow between jaw and ear, and pressing lightly in it.

mmmmm...*dreamy*

Willow had just taken half of Tara's nightmare with her

This actually made me shudder, a testament to the ominous unknown of the nightmares you have successfully conveyed.

I'm really loving this one.

And what a kiss!
Part 5

Before Persia.

Orz?

Faith's cheeks coloured slightly, but still she stared, too proud to stop now when caught.

I just love how the best authors can share so much about a character with so simple an action.

Giles' tweed clothing was as much a disguise as her designer clothing was.

(why had Tara never organized her books?)

The complete lack of a segue between these thoughts was splendid. ^_^

Happy Sunday!

I'm excited to resume posting chapters of The Apothecary, and here is some fb to fb!

Zooey's Bridge - Still keeping up with the dibsing. Well done! No, I actually haven't seen really any Bollywood. I own a television, but I haven't plugged it in yet. After working all day, the only thing I want to do at night is write. Thus the following chapter. Hope you like it!

ceridwen - You're right, Willow can see through Tara's bravado. I think that sort of moment, whenever it happens in a relationship, is a critical one. When the person we long to have love us can see through whatever veils and filters we may portray, then we know they care. It's like sifting through sand to find the nuggets of gold. Anyone who takes the time to sift means something to us. Sorry you had to wait so long for the next chapter, but I hope you enjoy it.

tacoda 13 - I'm glad you're enjoying it.

MelCar 19 - I like to kill with the suspense? Little ole me? Darn tootin. Willow and Jenny are indeed quite smart, and you'll soon see what Tara decides to do with Willow's information. Enjoy!

CrazyTaraWitch - We'll eventually delve a little deeper into Willow, to see how she came to learn of Tara. I'm actually quite excited about showing everyone a deeper layer of all the characters. If you can believe it, this has been the quiet before the storm. Now we'll see what happens when Tara is found out.

Little Bit - When all we see is the inhumanity of man, it's sometimes easy to lose hope. I think it is upon all of us to try and brighten the world, even in our own little spheres, to spread beauty and love as we can. I'll never forget that little Romanian boy. I swear never to forget him.

Zampsa - Quite a few people have mentioned they hope Tara allows Willow to help her. That's really the truth, isn't it? We humans can sometimes be prideful, and never accept help from anyone because that would mean that we are weak. I've come to understand that it takes an even deeper strength of character to ask for help when it is needed. Thanks for reading.

Shai - Ms. Phoenix? You can just call me Jen. Even though you were left speechless, I'm glad you left me a note. I really appreciate it. I hope I continue to render you speechless. Let me know if I succeed, ok?

irishgrl3 - I really wanted a huge ensemble cast for this fic, to see if I could write to more of the Buffyverse characters. When Jenny died in the series I cried and cried. I liked her so much. I'm more than happy to resurrect her here and give her a darn good story. There is more Jenny to come. I hope you like it.

ophelia11 - It was rather strange to write such a rough and tender Willow, to give just the right balance of tact and push. She had prepared so long and so hard for this day; proving that her feelings for Tara go very deep indeed. I'm glad you are continuing to read and enjoy the story, even gladder that you take time to leave some feedback. Thank you!

Nue - Wow, ready-to-slice-your-throat Willow. She is, in a way. I start to wonder if her plan is flawed from the beginning, if her own experiences have coloured her too much. I must admit that I'm very pleased with the eventual denouement of the scene as you will soon read. I hope you like it too.

Tara the Phoenix - Yes, that's me. Might be rather silly to fb on my own fb, but here's an update. I have finished the manuscript of Mistletoe, and I'll be flying to Cincinnati next weekend to meet an editor to discuss it. I'm very excited. I'll keep you all posted on its progress. Now that I'm finished it, I'll put it on the back burner for a while to simmer and bubble, which means I'll work solely on The Apothecary.

freckled-chick - Hi, and welcome again to the board! I'm actually quite astounded that you've read me first, but I'm very pleased you found your way back. This is a precious little home for us, with very talented writers. I'm just pleased to count myself among them. I hope you continue to find excellent fics, and I also hope you continue to enjoy this one. Thank you so much for taking time to comment. I appreciate it.

JustSkipIt - I think you've really hit it, that Willow's knowledge of Tara's situation might prove more disturbing to her. It's like anyone who suddenly discovers one of your deep secrets. Tara's not sure yet what Willow will do with her knowledge, and that must be really scary. Very intuitive, Deb. Thanks for sharing.

jasmydae - With spoilers, I actually meant glimpsing pieces of the coming chapters as you are trying to scroll through and leave feedback. If you were reading any of the fb to fb, you could also get spoilers of what is coming up next on The Apothecary. I'm glad you took the time to comment, especially as I hope you are continuing to work on Constants. I appreciate what you said about the lack of segue; I had hoped it would resonate with Willow-style. I hope you continue to enjoy the story.

That's everyone! Much thanks always to masterjendu for being my beta. I'll be posting the next chapter very soon.

Flawed Design

High school was the first place Willow learned that she could get anything she wanted as long as she worked hard for it. After high school, on the path of her illustrious and amazing career, this belief was strengthened; the world was not impenetrable, and that there was nothing that existed on this earth that couldn't be hers if she wanted it bad enough. No secrets too deep, no treasure too guarded.

For a while there she had forgotten the difference between the things she wanted and the things she needed.

When she prepared for this day, this altercation with the apothecary, traveling first to Rumania and then to Tokyo, writing more than a dozen scripts with alternate endings, Willow thought she had thought of everything.

She was a professional. She knew exactly what she was doing. The ending was always predictable because her designs were perfect.

Arrogant Willow. She hadn't expected this.

(this design is flawed)

Tara's eyes held anguish fathoms deep, and her voice broke as she said, “Willow, put your dagger at my throat.”

One hand was still in Tara's hair, the other held Tara's wrist. There was no room for daggers here, especially at the throat of this woman. What was it that she was asking Willow to do?

Tara shoved Willow away, hard. Confused, Willow opened her mouth to follow and say something, but Tara overrode her, saying even louder, “Willow, for the love of God, put your dagger at my throat!”

Then Tara's eyes changed, and her face grew tighter, and Willow saw that this wasn't Tara anymore. Tara was shunted far far away.

Was this override of Tara's mind some compulsion laid upon her, or was the genie still here?

(is this her master?)

Surprising speed and strength as Tara lifted her booted heel. Then Willow was flying across the room to smash into the bookcase, a fierce roaring in her chest from the force of that impact, for Tara broke at least three of her ribs with that one resounding kick.

The Chronicles of Narnia fell to the ground, and the spine of the book broke.

Tara was already picking up the discarded rapier, and it was naked and thirsting. Then the terrifying woman in blue stopped for a moment, the rapier held in a steady hand, the tip hovering professionally low. Like a killing machine with no emotion on her face, Tara stared at Willow for a last moment.

(Jenny's scars

what is the price of truth?)

Willow drew the kris from the scabbard at her back, wincing as her broken ribs ground against each other in protest. She was barely able to lift the long, curved dagger blade before the rapier clashed against it; thankfully the straight edge of the rapier spun off the sinuous edge of the dagger as Willow flicked it away.

With a few steps Willow was next to the little table where she had left her stack of money. Tara was stalking her; Willow picked up the table with her hands and threw it at Tara's ankles. The woman tripped momentarily over the little table, giving Willow enough time to shove one of those garish chairs away; this sweet smelling den was the strangest arena she had ever fought in. With another one of those mighty Tara-kicks the little table was shivered into pieces, striking the intricately carved bookcase, prompting another showering of precious books.

Tears were trickling from Tara's eyes even as she lunged at Willow again.

(who holds her leash?)

Willow pivoted away from the thrust, cursing the Persian carpet that tugged at her heels, and she caught Tara's wrist with one hand, jerking her forward. Tara seemed to be too well trained to fall for such a simple ruse; the Apothecary slammed her free elbow into Willow's face. There was a sickening crack as Willow's nose broke, more blood streaming suddenly from it in a crimson waterfall. Dazed and blinded, Willow then felt Tara's shoulders duck underneath her, then a mighty shove into Willow's already broken ribs, sending Willow tumbling once again across the floor.

Willow struggled to her knees, and as Tara leaped with the rapier in her hands, Willow somersaulted to the side, slashing Tara's leg with her kris. The blade bit deep and the Apothecary tumbled mid-leap, crashing with sickening force into the wall.

If it had been any opponent but the woman that Willow was falling in love with, Willow would have been able to kill her at that moment. Instead, Willow rolled back up, wiping at her streaming nose as she re-entered the standard battle stance.

She sparred with Spike four times a week. Only in Persia had Willow ever encountered an enemy as proficient as Spike, and she had Giles and Xander to back her up.

The Apothecary was the most skilled and deadly adversary Willow had ever encountered.

As Tara jumped back to her feet, her leg a bloody ribbon, Willow wondered if she would actually survive this fight. She should have expected a genie to be an accomplished warrior; how old was Tara really?

Tara feinted and pivoted as she re-engaged; Willow was watching her eyes and was ready. Willow followed the course of the feint and lifted her dagger, knowing she had to get the rapier out of Tara's hands, and the sooner the better. Taking a gamble, Willow dropped her dagger as she used her thumbs to gouge into Tara's sword-wrist, seeking the pressure point that linked the wrist to unbearable agony.

Tara gasped, and still she wept salt tears, and still she punched Willow in the jaw with her free hand just before slamming her shoulder once more into Willow's tortured chest.

Winded, Willow spun with the movement, only temporarily releasing her hold on Tara's sword-wrist, wrapping herself around Tara's unprotected back to come at her from the other side. Once on Tara's sword side, she slammed her own elbow into Tara's throat and grabbed the wrist again with both hands, gouging her thumbs deeply into Tara's wrist.

And just as Tara wavered, Willow slammed Tara's chest with her shoulder, pain from her ribs like great sparks in her eyes, a great cloud of agony and faint obscuring her vision. There wasn't much time. One more mighty squeeze with her thumbs and the rapier finally slid from Tara's nerveless hands.

Even as the rapier fell to the ground, the Apothecary bent to draw out one of Willow's own boot-daggers; once it was in her grip, she sliced Willow across the belly.

Anticipating the move, the dagger did not quite disembowel her, but the slash still cut into her skin, leaving a smooth edge of cascading blood. Willow staggered back, grasping the sword hilt with her bloodied hands, knowing she had unwittingly encountered an adversary more skilled than both her Armsmaster and that Persian.

She should have hired Tara for her lessons.

And she should have realized that dead men tell no tales. No wonder it was the most closely guarded secret in the world; those who uttered it were immediately silenced.

(and no one can save me like I saved Jenny)

The battle continued in unnerving silence. Tara uttered no taunts in an attempt to infuriate Willow; it wouldn't have worked anyway. Long gone was the time that Spike could goad her, and in this fight for her very life Willow would not lose her focus.

Even guarding her movements, Willow had to stay alive. In one moment of that battle, she skewered Tara's sword-side, the blade erupting from her back like that bloody volcano of her dream. Tara staggered away, clapping her hand to the wound, but was still able to parry Willow's following lunge.

(god if you make me kill her)

Tara thrust again for Willow's belly with Willow's own dagger, but Willow had her rapier now. Three swift parries were followed by an even quicker lunge; the women sidestepped each other as they fought. Their blood continued to rain on the Persian carpet; drops bright as cranberries alighted on the discarded books.

Blood in Narnia.

(I will hate you forever)

As they fought around the room, Willow discovered a small weakness on Tara's left side, a tiny hint of old aches or wounds. Despairing that she had to use such tactics against the one person she thought she would never have to fight or kill, Willow baited that side by revealing her own unprotected side. Tara went for it with her dagger and Willow suddenly pivoted again, caught the flat of the dagger and spun it, then rapped Tara's left side with the flat of her rapier, the steel slapping with enough force to raise an angry welt.

Continuing her pivot as Tara gasped, Willow again spun around Tara's back, caught Tara's hair

(oh the golden honey)

with her left hand, and yanked back sharply. Tara gasped in agony, and the sound of it ripped Willow to her core.

(for the love of god put your dagger at my throat)

Tara stamped Willow's foot, and she was about to elbow Willow in the gut when Willow laid the edge of her blade against Tara's throat. Tara was shocked into stillness; that last minute movement caused Willow to graze the skin of Tara's throat with her rapier, leaving a thin line of blood.

Ritual death. Would it be enough to break this compulsion laid on her?

Please let it be enough.

“You are dead, Apothecary,” Willow whispered harshly into Tara's ear, “I have defeated you.” She trembled with the effort of the fight, the pain hot and brilliant over her whole body.

(yield Tara, please, I do not want to kill you!)

Willow could not see into Tara's eyes, could not tell if this ritual defeat would be enough to stop the rampaging bloody art of the skilled Apothecary, or if Willow would be forced to kill her.

Willow thought she'd rather die instead. If Tara would turn to kill her, Willow just might allow it.

Tara's body shivered, and Willow could feel that thrumming against her, the warm and sticky volcano of blood from the wounds Willow inflicted. Every breath Willow took was agony, and her wounds wept like her eyes.

“I am dead,” the Apothecary whispered.

Willow could almost hear the subtle click in Tara's mind as the true woman returned to her body. Willow's desperate gamble to prove that it was not really Tara that she fought had paid off, but at a terrible price.

And Willow barely removed the blade from Tara's throat in time, as Tara collapsed in a bloody heap on the floor.

To be continued on Wednesday or Thursday with 17: Betrayal.
