CHAPTER FIVE
Willow standing up against the least crowded wall at the fire station as a crowd of firemen her age moved confidently and smoothly around her. Willow was just standing there and despite the looks from Tara that wanted her to be otherwise, to be next to here she wanted it to be that way. She was happiest when in the shadows.
Watching quietly, and with such a fascination, as people h walked around and up to people they did know with such ease and skill that the girl never seemed to learn how to do, she kept up against the wall. Refusing to mingle with Tara’s fellow co workers in fear of not fitting in and strange looks that she got from the past, she stood silently and as tall as she could. Sadly, she was only five six. Not that big of an impression was probably made from her body stance.
She didn't want to be here.
She truly didn't care to be here. Except to be near Tara who was talking to one of her co workers.
Well better yet, she didn't see why she had to be here.
Seeing, meeting and befriending Tara’s coworkers in an environment away from the Scooby‘s, the redhead girl couldn't think of one good reason to leave the wall and talk to someone she didn't know.
They'd forget my name the second I walked away from them anyway, the redhead knew from experience, and if they did give me the time of day, the conservation would lack and go into an awkward silence before they gingerly moved away from me. So what's the point of going through all that internal torture for nothing?
That made perfect sense to her, but didn't to Tara that wanted everyone to get to know her. She noticed out of the corner of her eye Buffy walking up to her.
“Shoot me, I begged. Just shoot me now.” Willow said, with a little laugh.
“C’mon, Willow!” Buffy laughed, bumping her hips against me (her best friend . . . unfortunately). “Dance! You look so dead; it’s like you don’t want to be here!” She grinned, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
I glared. “That’s because I don’t!” Willow said.
“It’s okay, Willow, really. You don’t have to hide your excitement, your only here because of a certain blonde over there,” Buffy said, point at Tara.
Willow closed her eyes miserably as she bit back a groan. And I called her my best friend. I mean, it’s not her own fault that I was here in the first place when I can be at home doing something besides begin here at the fire house.
“Like, what?” Buffy asked, looking at her Reading a book?
Yeah, exactly. But, no. Instead, I’m stuck here in the middle of a fire station surrounded by people I don’t know.
I know. Let’s stick together,” Buffy said.
ew. “Buffy,” Willow said desperately, tugging her arm. She looked at me, raising an eyebrow. I inwardly snorted. Gosh, she probably thought I left to the washroom.
“Can I go now?” asked willow.
“What? No!” Buffy yelled, a little to loud.
“Why not? Willow asked.
“We just got here five minutes ago. Are you insane you’re here with Tara?” Buffy said, giving her a really weird look.
“I know, it’s just she’s off with her pals somewhere, and I, I don’t know anyone here, well except for you of course,” Willow said, looking at her.
“C’mon let’s dance Wil,” Buffy said.
Willow dragged her legs towards the side of the dance floor. she grunted as she tried to push and excuse past people who just shot me scowls and glares. she replied by shooting them with her own daggers and even flipping them off when they cursed her existence
“Yeah, well, screw you, too” Willow yelled, back.
Willow and Buffy finally made it to the sidelines and inwardly patted herself on the back as my eyes surveyed the mob of people dancing. I snorted. Pft, if you wanted to call it that. Our generation has taken its toll and defined new, non-existent words and new definitions for other words. I don’t know whether it’s a good thing, or a bad thing. It depends on how you look at the world.
“Well, look who decided to show up, and dance” an amused voice said to my right
Willow turns to the voice and sees its Tara walking up to them.
“Why, Tara!” I shrilled, perfectly imitating her posses and fans. Whatever, same diff. “I didn’t know that you even noticed me begin here!” Willow said.
Why do you say that, I invited you here? I mean, what should i be doing if I wasn’t here be at home in front of the mirror practicing my smiles!” Tara said, smiling.
Willow raised an eyebrow, obviously unperturbed by her act in front of her co workers. and dropped her sweet smile and glared at her.
“Why are you acting like this?” Willow asked.
Her lips twitched, “Acting like what Willow?” Tara asked.
Willow nodded robotically. “Never mind Tara, just never mind,” Willow said, walking off the dance floor.
“Willow, wait I’m sorry,” Tara said, running after her.
Tara caught up to willow before she got to the door and turned her around to face her.
“leave me alone Tara, please I just want to go home,” Willow said, pulling her arm away.
“Don’t go I’m sorry, please dance with me?” Tara asked.
Horror washed over willow body as she looked around her. and saw couples making their way to the dance floor and start to. . . move. Okay, so she wouldn’t really call it moving. She wrinkled my nose.
“Is this even dancing?” willow asked in disbelief, raising her eyes to meet hers.
Tara met her eyes with her own intense ones. “What else would you call it?” asked Tara, looking at her.
willow snorted. “Standing in one spot as people so call sway moronically to the music playing she paused.
“What the hell does this accomplish?” willow asked.
Tara suddenly grinned and Willow felt all air leave her lungs. willow gave herself a swift kick in the ass.
“You know why they dance like that?” Tara asked, pulling willow closer.
Willow stiffened when practically all space between them vanished. Tara lowered her mouth near willow’s ear and willow could smell her perfume and the shampoo she used.
"No why?” Willow croaked out, trying to play it off as casually as she can. her eyes darted frantically over her back before her eyes landed on Buffy in the sidelines, practically smirking her ass off.
Willows eyes locked with Buffy before it grew wide.
That dirty little . . . ! She was planning this the whole time!' willow thought to herself.
With renewed confidence, Willow pulled back and stared at her straight in the eye. “Tell me Tara. . .” Willow began casually. “Why did you ask someone like me to dance with you when others would just die to be in my place?” Willow asked, mocking here earlier words.
Tara smirked, tightening her grip on willow’s waist. Willow uttered a squeak of surprise, causing her to chuckle lowly as her face flushed.
“Why else?” Tara asked .willow met her eyes accidentally. “I needed a reason to hold you.” asked Tara.
Willow stared at her. “What?” Willow asked slowly, unsure if she heard correctly.
“You heard me,” She murmured. “You’re just too stubborn and naïve to realize it sweetie.”
Willow gasped, before glaring at her. “I am not naïve!”
She rolled his eyes. “Your not stupid? No, we all know your not she said, tapping Willow's head slightly. Willow watched her in confusion. she smiled slightly. “Willow, I’ve been in love with you ever since that night of the fire.” Tara said
Willow gawked at her in total surprise.
. . . What? What the hell did she just say? thought willow
“What?” willow asked in total disbelief, unable to believe her. Well, obviously.
“You heard me,” she said, her voice casual
I didn’t even know she started to tremble. “That’s not possible,” I got out. It can’t be. It’s just. . .willow started
Okay, this is a dream. I am convinced that this is a dream. Things like this does not happen to people like me. I’m not kidding, it just doesn’t. It happens to Cinderella, Snow White, hell—Buffy! It doesn’t happen to Willow.
She chuckled wryly. “You make me crazy,” she whispered lowly, pulling me closer, if that was possible. I was oddly frozen in her arms and my heartbeat was unusually loud in my ears. What. The. Hell. “Your smile, your emotional eyes, your scent . . . Hell, even your glare. Which I receive a lot, by the way,” she added thoughtfully, as if she hadn’t just announced her love for me moments ago.
. . . I’m not kidding. If this is some kind of sick joke end it now." willow pleaded
“Liars go to Hell,” Willow said softly just as the song slowly died out. she looked up and her eyes locked with ocean blue orbs. she inhaled a sharp breath after I searched her eyes. see wasn’t lying. Oh, God. I needed to get out of here. Now. Willow said.
“Who said anything about lying?” she whispered, tightening her grip on my hand. I felt myself tremble. Damn it. I began to shake my head as I ripped my hand away from hers. I had to look away when I saw the flash of hurt in her eyes. Dear Lord, how could three little words affect someone like this?
“You’re delusional,” Willow finally managed to get out. “This’ll pass. I’m sure of it.” Willow nodded her head. She didn’t know if she was convincing herself or trying to convince Tara. willow thought.
She narrowed her eyes a little as she shoved her hands into her pockets. she looked down at me with flashing eyes. Even I had to admit it: she looked beautiful. But then I winced. This was pure craziness. Oh, God, I’m going psychotic.
“I had six weeks to think about my feelings,” she said in a clear, but low voice. “Trust me, Willow. I’ve tried my damn hardest to get over you. I . . . It felt weird. You were that girl that didn’t bow to me. You didn’t act like a ditz when I’m around you . . . In fact, you practically shoot flames whenever I breathe the same air as you, all though i can handle flames I'm a firefighter,” Tara said, chuckling a little.
Willow stared at her, with her mouth slowly falling even lower.
“But that’s why I fell even harder for you,” she finished in a murmur. She lifted her hand and brushed a piece of stray hair from willow’s face. Willow was frozen. and was dead. and couldn’t tear her eyes away from Tara’s. “Ever wonder why I spend more time around you rather than my friends?” she asked somewhat wryly as she tore her gaze away from me.
“But . . . That’s because you like annoying people,” Willow tried feebly, but she knew she was drowning.
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, please, Willow. You and I both know I just love to get you fired up
BITCH. Willow spat out
She’s confessing but she still manages to be a huge jackass at the same time. It’s probably her gift.
“Oh, whatever, Tara,” Willow snapped. “You say you love me, but then I turn and see you surrounded by bimbos here and there. You want a tip? When you’re head over heels for someone, don’t go and throw yourself at someone else. Your feelings aren’t going to go away.”
With that, she turned and huffily stalked out of the room. she glared at anyone who looked at her. What the hell were they looking at? she slowed her steps when she reached the balcony. and leaned forward on the edge and stared at the ocean at the side. she smiled a little when she saw couples walking down the beach. That was cute. . . But they go overboard when they start to make out excessively. Okay, we all get that you like kissing, but not in public, please.
Willow stared at the night sky and closed her eyes a little. “Lord, I am an idiot,” she breathed out. Her eyes darkened a little when she thought of Tara. I wasn’t pissed because of her . . . But because of how she’s making me feel. Honestly, God. Do you find other people’s pain amusing?
Yes, you are,” a voice said clearly from behind her. willow whirled around and saw Buffy leaning casually against the wall, just watching her.
willow glared at her. “Buffy!” she hissed. “You knew all along, didn’t you?!” How could you betray me like that
She just looked at me with her lips tilted upwards. “You’re an idiot, Will,” she announced flatly. She walked to me as I watched her. I had a feeling she was going to start talking, and it was going to be long. She stopped suddenly and turned to me sharply. Her smile grew. “You know tara and I never did like each other?”
Willow stared at her.
She nodded her head to herself as she focused her eyes on the night sky. “Yup. . . She came to me one day and asked for my help. Why would I say no? And then I find out that she has it bad for you so I’m all for it. Will,” she said, turning to me with a look of seriousness on her face. “I know you like her. Hell, you probably even love her. I can read you.” Her eyes twinkled. “I haven’t known you since we were born for nothing.”
“But. . .” I tried pathetically, “she’s a firefighter . . . she’s a player for God’s sake,”she exclaimed exasperatedly. “Why the hell would I be with her when I know that we’re going to break up in the end?”
Buffy raised an eyebrow. “What end? True love has no ending.”
What? Asked willow
For some pathetic crazy reason, my heart began to beat so damn fast and hard when realization hit me smack in the face. Oh, God. . .
“She’s always been in love with you,” Buffy whispered with a wide smile. “She just didn’t have the guts to tell you until now. I mean, you could be a real biter,” she teased.
I flushed. “Oh, shut up. I’m not that bad. . .” willow said
“Really? Tell that to her.” Buffy said, winking at her
Yeah, right. willow said, with a laugh.
“I will,” Willow said with a tone that I would do no such thing. “The next time to see her.” Which is never. Because I’m going to force Buffy to bring me home if it’s the last thing I do. And if it isn’t the last thing I do, I’m going to move to a different country and switch schools.
Okay, exaggeration. . . on my part.
“Really?” Buffy’s eyes brightened. “Because that would be now. Turn around, Willow.”
“Oh, for God’s sake. What did I seriously do to deserve this?” wined willow
'Well, it’s now or never." Buffy said
But I prefer never, she whimpered pathetically in her head before gathering the last ounce of courage and dignity she possess and turned around. Before meeting a wall of breast. Oh, her chest. Right. she looked up and saw her smirking at her.
willow wanted to hurt her. Like, right now.
“Go away,” willow hissed.
“Spit it out. You only have this moment. It’s your moment. You own it so do what your heart tells you. And your heart is saying—” Buffy said,
“Buffy, go away before I skin you alive and feed your flesh to vampires!” willow snapped, feeling the blush on her cheeks. Buffy grinned widely but agreed, but not before she passed me and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
“This is the moment,” Buffy whispered in her ear. “We know you love her.”
willow pushes her away after that.
Willow watched Buffy wave before closing the balcony doors. she frowned. Maybe she should’ve ran when she had the chance. I mean, now my other option is breaking the doors down or jumping off the terrace. . .
“Willow?” Tara said.
Willow looked up and saw Tara raised an eyebrow in my direction. she stared at her for a moment, seriously debating whether she should jump before forcing myself to stay rooted to the spot where she was standing. I have to do this. I’m going to jump and hopefully make it to the end. Because, well, it was just suck if I tripped and fell on my face.
“I have to tell you something,” Willow blurted before she lost any more of her dignity.
Oh God, too late. willow thought
She just stared at me, as if waiting for me to finish. . .
Well, duh, willow mentally scolded herself. Of course she’s going to wait until i spit it out. She’s a sweetheart, isn’t she? willow inwardly groaned. Ugh, why must I be cursed with this? Why couldn’t have I fallen for the Queen of Nerds, or something? It would’ve made life so much easier.
. . . Not that I’ve fallen for her, or anything, or have I," willow thought
. . . Oh, God. Just shut up, will you? My pride has already been shredded enough.
Um, yeah,” She began nervously, rubbing the back of her neck before ducking her head and tucked her hair behind her ear. A sign of my utmost tension. This was uncool, man.
“Spit it out, Will,” Tara said amusedly and almost tauntingly.
As if she knew how hard this was for me. What a farting piece of— “I have places to be, people to meet . . .”
willow lifted her chin her defiantly. “Fine, go then,” willow said in an angry tone. Here I was, trying to gather my lost dignity and last ounce of courage to confess my stupid feelings for this stupid heartless women, and she’s telling me that she has places to be? “See if I give a damn,” I muttered before making my way to walk past her as I felt a flush rise to my cheeks.
Damn her to Hell.
She caught my hand in the last moment. “I was playing, you gullible witch,” she said in a low tone before whirling me around in the blink of an eye. And I found myself on her chest.
Wide eyed, I looked up at her. I was speechless. Who did she think she was? “Do you have a thing for deciding people’s actions?” I managed to get out, along with a convenient glare.
Her lips curved. “It comes with being a firefighter,” she shrugged.
“Arrogant prick,” Willow muttered.
she chuckled and I felt her rest her chin on top of my head. I was stiff. My heart was beating so fast I was convinced it would pop out of my ribcage.
Not a pleasant thought, really. I cringed at the thought.
“I can be less arrogant,” she suddenly said after a few moments of silence. I was startled. I stared over her shoulder with wide eyes. “I can be more considerate. Charming, quiet . . . I’ll even stop talking to other girls,” she offered, lowering her eyes to meet mine. “I’ll do anything you want me to. I’ll be anything you want. You just tell me . . . and I’ll be that . . . for you.”
“W-what?” willow breathed out, unable to believe her ears.
Heer eyes were smoldering. I knew right then and there why girls throw themselves at her like pathetic morons, and rant on how gorgeous and sweet she is until they realize that they’re repeating the same stupid thing over and over again. . .
“I meant what I said, Willow,” Tara said quietly.
willow struggled to stay composed. “That you. . .”
“That I love you,” she said clearly. “I always have and I always will.” willow couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. “And I’m going to do everything in my power to get you to fall for me,” she said with determination, her eyes burning into mine. “This is different. You’re . . . You’re not like other girls.”
Willow inhaled a shaky breath. It was now or never
“I’m already in love with someone.” Willow said, looking into her eyes
She froze right when those words came out of her mouth. she felt her go rigid against her and she had the sudden insane urge to start cackling like a madman (woman, in my case). she inhaled quickly before looking up slowly and saw her staring at her.she felt my back grow hot and I wondered vaguely if it was just me or the temperature outside.
“What?” she asked slowly; shocked even, as her eyes burned straight into mine. I nodded slowly. She continued to stare at her before she saw her lips start to turn and a frown start to crease her forehead. She inhaled before exhaling and ran a hand through her hair. She was still stiff.
“I’m already in love,” she reiterated quietly as willow looked away from her. she stared over the balcony before focusing my eyes on the night sky. she felt her move a little away from her and she had to contain her urge to smack her forehead for her stupidity.
It’s honestly amazing that she’s the valedictorian of her graduating class. Like, seriously.
“You. . .” she breathed out before she muttered something that sounded like a curse in a foreign language. Willow know. She was bilingual. What can’t she do? she felt so ungodly inferior standing next to her. Just, you know, don’t tell her I said that. Her ego will triple.
Willow lips tipped into a small smile and she knew Tara was watching she. “Yeah. . .” willow murmured and turned abruptly before leaning on the ledge of the balcony. “I have been for a while. Even if I tried denying it,” I added thoughtfully with a wince as willow admitted something I usually don’t (or ever) do to anyone.
“Really,” she said, her voice curt.
Willow turned her head and quirked an eyebrow. “Yeah
SHe suddenly narrowed her eyes as she shoved her hands into her pockets. I prepared myself for the inevitable. “This is pretty low of you,” she commented, her eyes darkening.willow saw jealousy flash there and . . . and hurt? “If this is a joke then you better tell me now.”
willow shook my head silently. “I’m not lying,” I told her in a murmur.
There was a cold silence before Tara chuckled to herself wryly. “Of all ways to be burned. . .” she muttered to herself as she craned her neck to look at the sky. I watched her silently. “Thanks Willow,” she said in a terse tone. “You know, for telling me. Because I wouldn’t want to seem like a jackass pining for someone who’s already in love with someone else.”
Willow glared at her suddenly. “Well, excuse me. It’s not like you warned me or anything. Don’t go all sarcastic on me and make it seem like it’s my fault I bruised your la-dee-da ego,” willow bit out before crossing her arms over my chest as she turned her body to face away from her.
I cannot believe that she can get me pissed off in less than two seconds. That’s just so . . . unearthly.
“It’s not exactly like you slapped me and screamed bloody murder,”Tara snapped back.
“What, was that what you wanted me to do?” I asked heatedly. “I’m sorry for being shocked, okay? Apparently you’re surprised, as well. And—oh for God’s sake, Tara. Don’t glare at me like that. It’s not my fault.”
“I don’t even know why I put up with you,” Tara muttered darkly.
“Apparently you’re in love with me,” willow deadpanned, managing to hide my teasing tone.
Tara suddenly turned to me and stared at me. “Are you using that against me?” she asked in disbelief.
Willow stared at her. "NO! I'm not," willow said.
What a moron. I swear to God, I will speak to the fire chief and question his sanity. Why on earth didn’t Tara make it top of the class? Obviously the fire chief is a total fool that could not tell Tara is a total smartass that cannot read between the lines to save her life.
“I’m conversing with a moron,” I sighed.
“Thanks,” Tara drawled darkly before she sort of stared at willow for a moment before muttering something else under her breath and turned abruptly. “Well, whatever,” she muttered. “I’ll leave you to . . . and . . . For damn’s sake,” Tara growled under her breath, probably to herself. It was amusing. She looked at Willow. “Just forget everything I said, okay?” she said. “Obviously I can’t compete when you’re already in love.”
She turned and was about to head to open the balcony doors before Willow couldn’t take it anymore.
Yes. I snorted with laughter.
Willow watched as she slowly turned around and stared at her before taking in my puffed cheeks (I was trying not to laugh) and she glared. she glared daggers, people. Evidently I bruised her pride way too much for her liking.
Uh, my bad?” willow said
“What?” Tara sort of snapped.
willow lifted an eyebrow. “Panties in a twist, much?” willow commented. SHe growled. I smirked. Giving up that easily, eh? “Aren’t you at least interested?” willow laughed
“You’re completely humble,” Tara said sarcastically. “I mean, your ability to not boast is just astounding, really.” I saw her eyes flashed again. But I knew she was curious.
I rolled my eyes. “She’s an idiot,” I stated flatly. “A complete moron, really,” I mused, thinking of him. “In fact, I don’t even know why I converse with him. It’s funny, because she’s supposed to be intelligent,” I scoffed to myself. “Yeah, right.”
“I can sense the love you share. Really.”
I glared miniature daggers at her. “I’m not finished yet, you nimrod.” She huffed but stayed silent. I stared at her before I smiled a little to myself. “She’s really stupid,” I murmured, turning my head to look at the scenery behind me. “But she’s so much more,” I expressed, smiling at the night sky. “She’s just so . . . imperfectly perfect. Her idiotic act makes me want to kiss her until she bleeds, but she makes me smile.”
“Sounds perfect for you,” Willow heard Tara say lowly.
willow clenched her hand into a fist before inhaling a deep breath and turned back to her. She was staring at the distance, seeing nothing, possibly. “She . . . She’s constantly surrounded by girls, and I can’t help but feel insecure. I mean. . .” I hesitated a little.
“Then she’s an idiot,” Tara said sharply. “Why would she surround herself with other girls when she has you?” he said bitterly.
Gee . . . Let's all brainstorm. I'll let Tara go first.
She doesn’t know,” Willow said, looking down. she felt Tara's eyes on her. “She doesn’t know that I love her. We’re always arguing. I always push her away because I don’t want to get too close . . . But it’s inevitable.” I sighed before looking at Tara and saw her just staring at me. I smirked. “Kind of funny that I fell for a complete smartass, huh?”
“Yeah, since you’re a complete genius,” she muttered before rolling her eyes and tried to gain the atmosphere of disinterest. But I saw through her façade. She scowled deeply. “Who is this hypothetical moron?” Tara said in a sarcastic tone. “Quite a woman you make her out to be.”
Willow looked at Tara, letting the seconds drag by slowly.
. . . She really didn’t know, did she? Willow thought
Willow exhaled before groaning. Her eyes sharpened. “Why are you such an idiot?” I moaned in agony. Must I spell out every little thing for a female? willow said
“Well, my bad,” Tara snapped. “If my stupidity is contaminating you I might as well leave,” she said heatedly before whirling around, ready to push the doors open.
Willow slapped her forehead. I don’t even know why I’m doing this. “It’s you, you stupid jerk,” willow muttered. She suddenly stopped. Willow stared at Tara’s back, feeling her face burn.
“Yes, you heard right. I love you. Not some other moron, but you.” Willow said.
Willow have officially lost her dignity.
Tara turned around slowly before staring at Willow. Willow blushed even darker then her hair and looked down. Seconds later, Willow suddenly felt arms around her. She looked up and saw Tara . . . glaring at her?
“What?” Willow snapped moodily.
“You scared me you infectious cow,” she grumbled.
Willow rolled my eyes. “You are such a baby.” willow said, with a laugh.
Tara suddenly grinned and before I knew it, swooped down and kissed me passionately on the lips.
Look at the words I’ve been reduced to.
Willow was left breathless. she looked up and saw Tara smiling widely and she knew she was lucky. Willow locked eyes with her and she smiled at her slowly. My eyes lit up and I suddenly began to laugh at the stupidity of it all. This certainly wasn’t how she expected her announcement of love would be.
Willow's laughter died down and she saw her staring at her with a small smirk on her face. Willow lifted an eyebrow. “What?”
“You do realize that you’re now my permanent girlfriend?” Tara asked easily.
Willow shook my head. “So you do have a thing for making people’s decisions. . .”
She laughed. “No, of course not. You’d probably hurt me for suggesting that to someone else now. . .” she said, winking at Willow.Willow smacked her, ready to snap something at her but her kiss left willow flabbergasted. She certainly knew how to shut me up now.
“Jesus,” I murmured, blushing hotly as I looked down. I felt her eyes on me. Slowly, She looked up and saw Tara staring at her intensely. she smiled slowly, knowing that my cheeks were still flushed and my lips were probably swollen. “What?” wilow whispered, leaning her forehead against hers.
SHe kissed Willows lips lightly before smirking a slow smirk. “You’re breathtakingly gorgeous,” she replied in a drawl. But her voice was different. It didn’t hold her usual charming arrogance anymore. It was sweet, sincere . . . and genuine. And that’s how I know she meant what she said, that she loved me, that she’ll always love me. . .
She meant it all along.
She always has . . . and I know she always will.
"How about we get out of here, and i'll show you just how much i do love you," Tara said.
"And do you plan on taking me?" Willow asked.
"Well, I was thinking back to my place," Tara said, winking at her.
