Disclaimer: Many rich people own BTVS and its characters…I am not one of them.

Rating: R

Author’s Notes: This storyline takes everything up to halfway through New Moon Rising as the gospel. I have made a BIG change that may make some kittens ‘thwack’ me with a shovel…or, more appropriately, a sledgehammer. Also, some of the dynamics of Angel have been altered to suit me. This is an angsty piece.

Feedback: Of any sorts…sure. On the board is fine. No posting elsewhere without my consent.

PART 26

Willow felt as if she were going to vomit. It was painful throb in her abdomen that made her want to push her fingers into her throat just to get it over with so her stomach would stop burning and quaking.

How could I have forgotten? This was the one chance I was waiting for…it’s finally arrived and I don’t even need it.

The dining room table was covered with a Sunnydale map full of plotted coordinates. They were points from a log that Xander kept about the assignments Willow had given them. They were the locations where they found and killed monsters - exactly where Willow had told them they would be.

Wesley had carefully connected the points using star charts and it formed a large pattern. It was a pattern that both Wesley and Buffy had quickly recognized from a book.

And so had Tara. Except she had seen it in person…around the redhead’s very neck, in fact.

It was a very good rendering of Willow’s agate protection charm.

Buffy was fuming.

“How could you use me…all of us…like pawns? “

It wasn’t like that.

“How could you risk our lives without telling us ANYTHING?”

I didn’t think it would work. I didn’t think I’d be able to go through with it if it did work. I thought it was safer for you not to know.

But Willow really knew she had no excuse.

So she just sat there and took it.

--------------------------------------------

If the setting was a basement with grey, musty cinder block walls and only one hanging light bulb, perhaps Tara would understand the state of affairs. Instead it was the slayer’s mostly warm and pleasant dining room, and it seemed a strange place for to watch Buffy’s relentless interrogation and anger-filled release of frustration.

Willow’s plan was ingenious. She managed to mix math and science with magic. She stimulated power sources readily available in the environment at exact times to extract the energy she would need to activate her charm.

Tara only needed a brief scan of an old Sumerian tome to understand the purpose of the charm.

It was a cure for Willow, though an ill-advised one, that would’ve repaired everything that their tangled magic had caused. It would have removed the drain of energy on her body and soul. It would have sliced the connection between the two of them. And it very likely would have burned all the magical ability out of Willow in the process.

How much pain did you endure to even consider such a dangerous idea?

Tara was hurt that Willow hadn’t told her about this, but she wasn’t angry. She was relieved, nearly to tears, that her love never had the chance to try this option. Tara certainly wasn’t anywhere near as enraged as Buffy, who had long passed trying to understand the rationale of Willow’s actions. The slayer’s aura was a jagged red scar of bitterness and betrayal.

Thank goodness it shouldn’t be too hard to deactivate the charm. It will stop all the monsters that are sensing the charm in her home or following the echoes of the magic she recently cast.

Buffy seemed less interested in that facet of the situation.

“Why in the hell would you do something that would attract so much danger to you?”

Tara could hear the real question.

Why wouldn’t you let me help you?

She knew that Buffy had lost so much, so many. Willow was just another failure on the list of people to keep safe. Buffy had given her young life to something that hurt her more than it healed. Tara had missed this earlier, but it was plain to see now that the slayer was tired…and she seemed very old to be something she never asked to be.

“You wanted to pretend you were our savior…is that it? You gave us scraps of charity, small stacks of money, while you used us any damn way you wanted. And all we could think was poor little hurt Willow.”

All of this made no difference to Tara. She wasn’t going to sit here any longer and watch Willow curl into herself under that kind of wrath.

Not when it was her fault too.

--------------------------------------------

“ENOUGH!” Tara growled, standing up from the dining chair next to Willow’s near the entryway side of the room.

“This isn’t your business,” Buffy spat, having no problem transferring her anger to the blonde.

“Willow is my business,” Tara replied authoritatively, moving around the table and facing Buffy squarely.

“For how long? Until the next time you fuck her over and leave town?” Buffy answered as she pushed herself closer.

“That was unnecessary,” Wesley interjected from his seat, even as Xander moved next to Buffy and put a hand on her shoulder. She shrugged it off.

Tara refused to reply; it was useless to bang her head against this wall right now. Plus, she didn’t want to upset Willow anymore.

“Wes…can you get my stuff? I think I’ve run out my welcome here. Willow, I’ll take you…” Tara turned around to realize that the redhead had exited the room and the house.

“Damn.”

--------------------------------------------

Tara was thankful to the Godesses that the grounds around Willow's building were deserted and that the security let her inside without any provocation. She rushed up to the dark apartment, worrying when she didn’t initially find Willow. When she realized that the shower was running, her pulse calmed and slowly went back to normal.

Tara walked into the unlit room, turning a light on to make her presence known. Willow met her eyes as she made her way to the shower. “You really shouldn’t run off like that. Danger and all.”

“I’m sorry…I’m sorry,” Willow whispered as the drops from the showerhead rained down her face and body. It was clear she had just been standing there letting the water cascade over her without a thought of actually showering.

Tara cut off the water and pulled her out of the shower and into a warm, fluffy towel and robe.

“No.” Tara assertively replied as she met green eyes that were avoiding her own.

“Hey…no sorries. Don’t be sorry for protecting yourself. I mean, I wish you had told me…”

Willow’s eyes begged to hers. “I wasn’t trying to hide this...”

“I know.”

“This has been the center of my existence for so long. I’ve felt like I was standing still while the world moved so fast around me. Then you come back and suddenly the world does finally stand still. I don’t want to just exist anymore. You give me choices so I can move once more. You take the weight away and I’m free. I’m not sure how to move yet, so many of those muscles have atrophied. But I am damn sure gonna learn how to move again…how to live my life again.”

Willow half rolled her eyes and shook her head. “And can I beat a metaphor to death or what?”

A wry smile was her answer.

Willow moved to the living room where the charm was lying on a side table, pulsing. She became serious again.

“I don’t want to lie to you or hide from you. I don’t…”

She picked it up, carefully avoiding the smooth stone, and threw it at the exposed brick of the fireplace. It crashed into the corner of the mantle and a small crack formed on the surface. The stone quickly lost its light and magical hum; it became a dead, inactive relic.

“I don’t need that. I trust you.”

So I finnaly have finnished reading this and i cant wait for the next update.

It was so fun to get a chance to sit and read a story and be able to finish it in two days (anyone try to catch up to the chronichle story? it is sooooo hard).
Anyhow i love the story line and how the characters have changed because of circumstances, but you made them change realisticaly as if the actual characters went through this instead of just saying these guys are gonna change whether or not it would be in their character.

Cant wait for the next update!

Cyd, dear, you should have made that scene with Buffy in a dank underground cell with one lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. If that had been the setting I might be sympathetic to Buffy's anger.

I can understand Buffy being upset about not being in the loop and, well the monsters and the danger, I'll give her that, but the whole 'placating us with money' thing was totally uncalled for. Buffy and the rest of the gang all had a choice (if we forget for a minute that the concept of choice is inherently suspect and should probably be forever written as "choice") when it came to accepting or rejecting Willow's material wealth. So, I am with Willow here, it wasn't like that. I'll go as far as saying that they also had a choice as to how to deal with Willow's withdrawal and they took the easy way out and willingly signed on to be Scarlet's sidekicks without asking questions. So, after this unfortunate outburst Buffy should chill and call on the rational personality that I hope lives inside her.

As for the amulet thingie, so I gather that it was Willow's 'final solution' of sorts, but it does what exactly? how did it put them all in danger exactly? I thought it had been activated by the old guy way back when and that was that, but now it turns out it's doing more stuff? more importantly, am i going to have to go back and read the story all over again to geet it or are you building suspense here? ;-)

Cool stuff, Ms. Cyd, keep it coming.

Happy, happy reply time:

Dianneswillowtree: Thanks for reading and, yes, it looks like things are getting better for w/t.

viximon: Yes that was a fast update. I don't expect to be able to write that quickly anymore but here's hopin'.

witchlove: Welcome...I'm glad you're enjoying.

morningstar: Welcome to you as well. I'm glad the character changes seem to fit with the setup of the story and how it has progressed. Thanks.

PancakesinBellies: Well, this side of the plot does connect back to a small part earlier but it is not essential to remember it. Basically this was Willow's fail safe for curing herself. Thanks for stoppin' in.

Safuega: Buffy was not meant to be all that sympathetic there so I'm glad you felt that. You're definitely right about Buffy having choices and not really having the right to outburst considering she didn't ask a lot of questions when all this started (or at any point thereafter).

As for the amulet, I think there will be a bit of explanation of what it could've done in the next update. Again, I don't think a reread is necessary (but you're welcome to it..and it might be easier on my website without all the comments). I don't have a lot of plans to dwell on the magical stuff though I've had to use it in these last updates. Thanks, Safuega.

I'm busy the next couple of days but maybe I can start the new part towards the end of the week.

Cyd - What a painful update. Ok, lots of pain all around with Cam, Chris, etc. stories. Geez. If Alcy posts again soon we'll all be seeking medication or something. Poor Willow with Buffy's total self-absorption and accusations. How could you? Like Buffy has never done anything dangerous and stupid and not told everyone about the danger.

At least Tara is sympathetic and has gone to Willow. Things can only go well now. Ha ha.

Well, Cyd is the Mistress of Angst.

The almighty watty says I'm too cool for begging? Clearly she hasn't talked to the missus in a while.

But not only are you too cool and mistress of many things, Cyd, you're also absolutely right. I haven't talked to your missus for a long long long while. :)

Anyway. Story. Yes, Buffy is livid, her starting point is right but she sure as hell has a way with expressing her feelings, eh.
“How could you use me…all of us…like pawns? “

You know what I noticed? It's all.about.me Buffy. Again. Even though from where she's sitting, she has a point, sort of.

Willow using such a potentially harmful charm to solve her magic "problem" is, now I think of it, something she would come up with. Like reformatting the hard disk, solving the symptom not the underlying illness. And yeah, I too seems to have beaten the metaphor to death. Rightly or wrongly, she has a point, sort of.

“Willow is my business,”

And since Willow, Buffy, Sunnydale, the hellmouth and its assorted creature features are so tied together, Tara will have to make all of those her business too. Is it as simple as smashing the charm into pieces? The physical is destroyed, yet there's a lot of patching up to do. Hope you can find more time to write soon.

Can't believe I never left any review before... great story! Watty's right, Buffy's at her usual 'me! me! me!', big surpirse there... i'm glad that at least Tara's still looking after Willow, even if i suspect part of the reason is that she's feeling guilty that (even if it's not really her fault) Willow had to resort to such measure in order to save herself.

“I don’t need that. I trust you.”

More replies:

JustSkipIt: Hi Debra. Yeah, Buffy is pretty unsympathetic in her part.

Like Buffy has never done anything dangerous and stupid and not told everyone about the danger.

No kidding. That is dead on.

watty: I like your sort of points. Buffy does actually have a point but she is so poorly handling it (and handled it all along, incidently) that it becomes moot when she makes it an 'all about her' tantrum.

I like this...

Willow using such a potentially harmful charm to solve her magic "problem" is, now I think of it, something she would come up with. Like reformatting the hard disk, solving the symptom not the underlying illness.

Oh, and on a side note, the Missus informed me that she doesn't have to resort to begging to get her way. And now that I think about it, that is absolutely true. Thanks, wattyboss.

Cynthia Taz: Hi there. I enjoyed and agree with your comments. And I'm glad you like.

viximon: Heehee, thanks for hopin’...and good news for you (and everyone else) - Update should be up shortly.

PART 27

Willow thought she was supposed to be hurt by the viciousness of Buffy’s attacks against her actions. Or angry. Or something.

She wasn’t.

Instead, it was an empty space.

At the Summers' home, Willow realized that she didn’t know Buffy anymore. Neither one of them were the same. Time had passed and changed them both. Buffy was now simply a teenage friend in a world where they were firmly adults.

Willow quickly left the house upset, but not because of that realization. Her only concern was that she had kept another secret from Tara, albeit unintentionally.

The thought of causing Tara harm stung deep.

That never changed. That would always hurt.

But Tara came back and she wasn’t mad or distrustful or hurt either. They didn't fly off into an argument. They didn't get defensive or standoffish. Instead, they sat and talked it out.

It sounded so simple, yet communication rarely was.

Tara admitted she felt guilty about Willow’s life threatening decisions. She admitted that tonight she had been worried that she couldn’t keep her safe out in the open.

“I don't need safety. You just have to love me.” Willow had replied.

Willow then admitted that watching her amulet break on the mantle was a relief. It felt like closure. It had been her bubble away from life these last years. It had been one of the few reasons she went on living. The only reason she charted stars and scoured prophesies and sent the Scoobies out to kill marks. It had been the reason for her business success and it had been everything.

Now it was a bit of useless stone and metal…no longer a beacon for demons or power.

“I don’t need the future it promised me anymore.”

Not when she had Tara in her house...in her life.

All the hope she needed rested in those striking blue eyes.

They were together on this one.

And being together with Tara was joyous.

Willow reached out her hand and didn’t have to question if Tara would take it. They moved closer, each having equal parts in their dance. Tara’s arms wrapped around her waist as Willow’s hands caressed her face. They would not rush this time as lips met and tongues tantalized over sensitive spots. Earlobes and necks and shoulders were not overlooked in their gentle sway.

They moved to the bedroom, and when they could no longer stand, they let the bed take their weight.

Their bodies intertwined, fitting with the precision of a blueprint yet exuding the beauty of a masterwork painting. Fingers touched hair so soft that it caused shivers to cascade across their bodies. Hands grasped muscles of surprising tautness and strength. Lips brushed wetness of the most exquisite delight. Tongues swirled over places of hot intensity. Nails dragged down skin in pure bliss.

Their symphony of motion and balance formed a perfect circle as they began again and again.

Finally, when they could take no more pleasure, Willow spooned Tara as she drifted into a tranquil slumber.

Willow had no thought of leaving the bed this time.

They were together, completely, and this was right.

Willow’s hand lifted and, without a thought, beautiful green stars rose to the ceiling. They watched over them that night, casting a slight glow over two souls that had finally found freedom in being together and wholeness in a world of empty spaces.

Good things come in small packages, like this chapter. Especially when Willow finally realizes that she has to move on and not bury herself in the past constantly. It is telling that she isn't upset at Buffy's self-centered accusations, because there are more important fish -- Tara.
It sounded so simple, yet communication rarely was.

Who needs talk show psychologists or expensive self-help books when we have this? Sharp, and to the point.

I really like your succinct descriptions of how they reconnected. Gives it all a hell of a tone.

They were together, completely, and this was right.

Oddly, I'm reminded of the "because it's wrong" that Faith-in-Buffy kept saying in Who are You, only the opposite -- this is right, so right.

I liked this update.

even though it sounded like an ending. Its just knowing that Willow and Tara are no longer running and are talking.

I did have one question, now that the amulet is gone does that mean that willows buisness will fail? or did her buisness suceed because of WIllow and not the amulet?

hopefully waiting for the next update

Cyd - that was really beautiful. Again I love your (heck, I've lost my eloquent words) frugality of words here. The love scene is very short (as is the update) yet, everything is very vivid and real to the reader. I love that you portray so well the way that Willow is released from her prison and that she's able to basically discard Buffy's self-righteous criticism. The love scene... complete!

Wow, Cyd. Just...wow. That was beautiful, and while I agree with Emmy and morningstar that I was half expecting a "The End" there, I'm glad there's more to come.
“I don’t need the future it promised me anymore.”

Not when she had Tara in her house...in her life.

All the hope she needed rested in those striking blue eyes.

That was so lovely. Minimalist, but so emotional it's hard to believe this is the same Willow from the beginning of this story. I loved how she created the stars at the end---how it was seemingly unconscious---but she did it on her own, without going crazy out of control. It's like she's regained her balance, and it's so natural and right it's almost unremarkable (except here I am remarking on it). You have a way with words, my friend. Brava.
