CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE



Giles pulled up to the curb, sliding the transmission into neutral and setting the parking brake.



“Good God, you know...for a Watcher...you’re pretty timid.” Maggie said, looking at Giles, who gave her a bit of an annoyed look. She elbowed the Englishman in the side, grinning widely. “How about next time we go somewhere, you let me take her for a while...burn the carbon out of the engine...let ‘er purr for a while.” She said, wiggling her eyebrows.



“Yeah...come on, Giles...let ‘er purr!” Buffy said, razzing the Watcher.



“There will be no purring! She’s fine just the way she is...now, I believe that the others are waiting...shall we?” He said, climbing out of the car.



“Boy! Somebody’s a little touchy today!” Buffy said, receiving a glare from Giles.



“Aww…let him be, Buffy-dear. He can’t help it…he’s English.” Maggie said with a wink.



The crew made their way into the house and up the stairs to Willow’s room. Giles and Buffy entered first, followed by Maggie and Logan. Both Maggie and Logan stopped as they saw Willow’s pale form inside the casting circle.



“Wow…she looks just like me.” Logan said, quietly.



“Actually, you look just like her, dear.” Maggie corrected her.



“Hate to be all interruption-guy and all…but could somebody start with the introductions here?” Xander said, his eyes steady on Logan.



So that’s what Wills would look like as a blonde…not bad! Not bad at all!



Anya noticed Xander’s sudden preoccupation with the blonde-version of Willow and was not amused. She stepped in front of Xander possessively, her arms crossed.



“I’m Anya Jenkins…Xander’s mine…boyfriend, that is…he’s taken.”



“Oooookay.” Logan said, somewhat confused.



“Please excuse the former Vengeance Demon-girl…she’s just a little possessive.” Xander said, kissing the top of the blonde’s head to offer her a bit of reassurance.



Maggie stepped forward, smiling as she placed her hand on Xander’s cheek. Her eyes glistening a cobalt blue that was absolutely mesmerizing.



“So much love to give…I can see why she protects her interest!” Maggie said, taking Anya’s hand in hers. “His love for you is true, Anyanka…never doubt that, child.”



Faith stood back, not quite sure what to make of the situation. Maggie patted Anya’s hand before heading back towards Faith.



“Hey…the name’s…” Faith began.



“Faith…I know, child.” Maggie said, respectful of Faith’s personal space. She did not want to make the already leery girl any more uncomfortable by touching her…although, in some way…she could tell that the girl longed for the affection. “Very pleased to meet another of the Chosen Ones.” She said, bowing her head slightly in a show of respect.



It was a small gesture, but it meant the world to Faith. She had never really thought of herself as a Chosen One…that was B’s title, not hers. She nodded back, smiling softly.



“Thanks…nice to meet you, too.” Faith said, graciously.



“Yes, well, now that we’re through with the introductions…what exactly is it that you’ve found?” Giles asked, looking to Faith.



“Oh yeah…sorry…” Faith said, retrieving the book from the table. She handed it over to the Watcher, pointing at one of the passages. “…here…I’m not very good with all of this translating and shi-…I mean ‘stuff’…but I think it says something about members of the same bloodline being able to connect…or trace back…or something.”



Giles looked at the passage…and was quite impressed that Faith had done as well as she had. Ancient Sumerian was not by any means easy to translate.



“You’re exactly right, Faith.” Giles said, surprised. “It says something to the effect of ‘only the pure of heart and blood can trace the line back, for the bloodline ties all throughout time…generation to generation.’” He finished, looking to Logan and Maggie.



“Well…that sounds sounds simple enough.” Logan said.



“Yes…too simple.” Maggie said, skeptically.

CHAPTER SIXTY



Giles continued to study the writings in the book.



“It seems that, much like our souls are attached to our bodies by the golden thread allowing things like astral travel…so our bodies are attached to our ancestors via the bloodline…” Giles explained.



“That’s great! You guys have done that astral travel stuff before…so no big, right?” Xander said.



“Please excuse him…he’s an astral-virgin…” Anya whispered loudly to Maggie. Sending the rest of the gang snickering.



“Hey! I’m not a virgin!” Xander yelled.



Anya patted him, reassuringly. “It’s okay, honey…I love you anyhow!”



“Well…what about Buffy! She’s never done it either!”



“Actually…I did…remember when Faith and I traded bodies for a week?” Buffy said, remembering when Faith had purposely tricked her into switching bodies…it had nearly gotten her killed. However, it did give her a better insight to her partner’s innermost feelings…



“Face it, Dork-boy…you’re the only one who hasn’t…just deal with it!” Faith said, snickering until she caught a glance of Maggie giving her a look. “Sorry.” She said sheepishly, suddenly realizing that she didn’t want to disappoint the elderly woman.



“So that’s great, right? I mean…Maggie and Logan…they can do the bloodline-travel thingy, bring Wills back, and everything will be fine, right?” Buffy said, hopefully, looking to her Watcher.



“It’s not that simple, dear…” Maggie interjected.



“I’ll say it’s not!” Anya said, adding her two-cents. “First of all, there’s the possibility of the line breaking and stranding them who-knows-where in the past…and then there’s the whole time parallax thing…”



“Time para-who?” Buffy asked.



“Time parallax! You know…time travel to the past…do something to influence the future…you could possibly erase your own existence. Don’t you people know anything?” Anya said, marveling at how the human race could have possibly made it as far as they had on such limited intellect.



“Hey! Chill, alright? Some of us aren’t as OLD and experienced as you, Demon-girl!” Faith countered, sticking up for Buffy.



“Anya is right…there is a myriad of risks involved…and the chances are quite good, I’m afraid, that a parallax could occur.” Giles said.



“Well…they’re just going to have to risk it, right?” Xander said, wanting his best friend back desperately.



“That’s not our choice to make, Xander…it’s theirs.” Buffy said, leaving the matter in their hands.



Maggie looked to Logan, and Logan to Maggie. She took the young woman’s hand in her own; an action to settle her fears as much as those of Logan’s. She took a deep breath, exhaling slowly before looking deeply within her granddaughter’s eyes, smiling softly as she said “Duty’s calling…it’s time for us to answer, kiddo.”



Meanwhile…



Willow and Tara lay asleep on a bed of Emerald green, their arms and legs entwined in the embrace of lovers.



Suddenly, Tara began to stir…



“Baby? Wake up…you’re having a nightmare.” Willow whispered lovingly in her wife’s ear.



Tara instinctively placed her hand protectively over her midsection…feeling the lifeforce of their daughter growing within her.



“Something is happening…” She said, looking at her wife with fear in her eyes…

CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE



Although she couldn’t explain exactly what she was feeling, Tara knew that something drastic was happening…



“Baby? Are you okay?” Willow said, her voice filled with concern.



“I don’t know…I’m not sure what just happened, but I just felt like…I don’t know…like someone connected to me…to us…was in danger.” Tara said, her hand still placed protectively over her stomach.



“The baby?” Willow asked reluctantly.



“I thought so at first…but now…I’m not sure.”



“Maybe we should go back to the cottage…” Willow suggested, fearing that someone or something may take this moment, while they were out in the open, to attack. At least at the cottage, they would have some semblance of protection.



“I think that’s probably a good idea.” Tara said.



The two gathered up their cloaks, Willow helping Tara with hers, and headed back down the path, both in a state of heightened alert.



Meanwhile…



Logan and Maggie sat within a casting circle of sea salt, sitting side-by-side, one facing north, the other south. In front of each woman sat a silver athame. Each was bedecked with a stone lashed to the hilt, in Logan’s, a herkemer diamond; in Maggie’s, a bloodstone. The only light that shone in the room was that of four candles, one at each directional point - north, south, east, and west.



The rest of the gang stood back watching as the women began casting the spell that would transport them back in time…



Each woman extended their right arm with open hand, sweeping it in an arc, starting clockwise, then reversing - tracing the path of the casting circle…



“The tie that binds, the eye that sees…the blood that flows through thee and me…” they began chanting.



Both Slayers perked up as they felt the electricity rising within the room. It seemed to pop and crackle against every nerve in their bodies. The others seemed to pick up on it as well, but to a lesser extent.



“The blood must flow…to trace the line…I with yours…and yours with mine.”



At that point, each woman reached for their athames, cutting the palms of their left hand. After making the cut, they raised their left hands, clasping each other’s tightly together, blood trickling down their wrists in crimson rivulets.



“The blood now flows…the line now forms…through fairer skies…and rougher storms. So take us now…on wings to fly…the line to follow…throughout the skies. Black as the abyss, as dark as the night, these powers we summon, our souls to take flight. Back through the ages, traveling through time, we summon you mages, your power with thine. Deliver us there,this time that we seek, and keep unawares, our secrets not speak.”



Droplets of crimson splashed to the floor…



“Accept this our offering, our blood that falls there, as inside the circle, the time line to tear!"



The mounting energy culminated in a flash of blue light that nearly blinded the others as Maggie and Logan completed the incantation. Both of the women seemed suspended in time, frozen into position with their hands tightly clasped together.



Everyone stood completely still, each leary to be the first to speak.



Buffy turned her attention to the small form still lying in the first circle. In all of the commotion, Willow had never even stirred.



Meanwhile…



Tara doubled over with pain, feeling as though her very core was being torn form her body.



“Ahhhh!!!!” She said, crumbling.



“Tara!!!!!”

CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO



“Tara!!!” Willow yelled, catching her wife and lowering her to the ground.



“…the…baby…” Tara said, gritting her teeth against the pain.



“What’s the matter? Baby?? What can I do?” Willow said, her voice tinged with panic.



“Hold…me…” Tara said.



Willow sat on the forest floor, scooping her love into her arms.



“Goddess…please don’t let me lose them. Tara…she’s my life…my everything…my always!” Willow pleaded. She felt guilty, but she couldn’t help but silently ask that if one should be lost, that it would be the baby, and not her Tara. They could always have another child…but there would only ever be one Tara…the love of her life…her soulmate.



Then, as suddenly as the pain came, it subsided.



Willow wiped the beads of perspiration glistening on Tara’s brow. She could feel her love’s body relaxing in her arms.



“Tara?”



There was no answer.



Willow leaned over, Tara’s head still in her lap, placing her cheek near her mouth. She could feel Tara’s breath, even though it was quite shallow.



“Baby? Talk to me! Are you alright?” Willow begged, tears running down her cheeks.



Tara slowly opened her eyes.



“Unnnnhh.” She moaned. “What…h-happened?”



“I don’t know…we were walking down the path…and you…you just collapsed!” Willow said, trying her best to stay somewhat in control of her own emotions. She did not want to upset Tara any more than she already was.



“I felt something…almost like something was pulling…”



“Pulling? On what?”



“…it’s hard to explain…but it felt like something was pulling me from inside.” Tara said, trying to understand herself what had happened.



“Inside?” Willow said, placing her hand protectively over Tara’s stomach.



Tara placed her hand over Willow’s. She paused for a moment, closing her eyes and concentrating on feeling the life-force within her. She wanted to make sure that the baby was alright before she said any more to her wife. She couldn’t bare the thought of hurting her.



“She’s still there…Meghan…she’s alright.” Tara said, with a sigh of relief, clinging to the redhead.



Meanwhile, back in the future…



Maggie and Logan sat - their hands still touching in what seemed like suspended animation.



The rest of the Scoobies stood quietly, their eyes trained intently on the two women.



“Do you think they made it?” Buffy said, almost afraid to ask..



“Well…it appears that they’ve made it somewhere. However, I’m afraid we won’t know for sure if they made it back to Willow and Tara until they return.” Giles said.



“You’re serious? We’re not going to know until they get back?!” Buffy said, losing whatever shred of patience that she had left.



“I’m afraid so, yes.”



“It wasn’t bad enough that Will is lying there almost dead…now we’ve got Maggie and Logan that way, too?” Buffy said, tears running down her face.



“What did you think was going to happen? They had to do the same spell that Willow did to go back there…if they don’t make it back, all of them will die for sure.” Anya said in her matter-of-factly style.



Buffy couldn’t take it anymore. Now, two more people were in grave danger…hell, who was she kidding? All of her loved ones were at stake…and it was her fault. None of them would be there if they hadn’t been associated with her. She could lose them all. She couldn’t bear to be in the room for one second longer. Turning away from the rest of the group, she ran out of the room, down the stairs and out of the house.



“Way to go, demon-girl!” Faith said to Anya.



“I was just stating the obvious! Xander! Tell them!”



“An…I love you, you know that…but sometimes…you just need to not always be all with the ‘impending doom’ stuff. Okay?” Xander said, knowing that she didn’t mean any harm.



“I’ll go after her.” Giles said, starting toward the door – only to be stopped by Faith.



“No…I’ll go.” She said, heading down the stairs.



Meanwhile, somewhere in a wooded area…



Maggie and Logan lay in a heap on the forest floor…neither of them moving. Finally, Logan is the first to gasp as she takes in her first breath in this strange new place. Maggie followed soon after.



“Gran? Are you okay?” Logan said, breathlessly.



“I think so…” Maggie said, her hand on her chest, trying to catch her breath.



“Did we make it? Are we here?” Logan said, looking to her elder for confirmation.



“I’m not sure yet…” Maggie said, looking around at her surroundings.
