Everyone, I'm home from PAX and exhausted. I'd love to come up with thoughtful, gracious responses to everyone, but dammit it's bed time. It was a working trip, and I brought home lots of work and I have school; my update rate is going to remain slower then at first, maybe once or twice a week. In sum, I love you all, thanks for reading, and extra bonus thanks for leaving feedback.

I know I have left why Willow doesn't take the crystal and Willow finding out what the reminder actually says alone for this chapter, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten them. But before sleepy time, there is story time!

Chapter 2 Part 3: In Which Willow Keeps her Promise
a.k.a. In which the cluestick swings and connects

Willow began to speak, but the carefully rehearsed words pouring out of her mouth weren’t the focus of her attention. No, the important thing at the moment was trying to judge how Tara was feeling.

Okay, so, surprise, that makes sense, she shouldn’t expect to see me, as I ditched her this afternoon. Bad me. And there’s mild amuseme—ooh, hopeful! I like hopeful. Hopeful means she hasn’t given up on my dumb butt. But she’s still using the door as a shield. Well, here goes nothing.

“Anyway, I know it's late, but I thought... I mean, if you still wanted to... do something.”

Sayyessayyespleaseohplea—see, now that is Tara smiling. Full on beaming. Dimples and everything. Man, her dimples are really adorable.

Tara opened the door, and Willow followed her into the room; though she knew she still had major league apologizing to do, just being in Tara’s room put her at ease.

Screw the Bronze. Here, this space: this is my place-blanky.

As soon as she entered, Willow’s eyes landed on the doll’s eye crystal on Tara’s dresser, sitting next to a deck of cards. She hadn’t seen either of them out before, but somehow they felt familiar. Guilt beat out any curiosity as to why.

“Listen, Tara, about today . . . .” Willow gestured at Tara’s bed, and they sat down.

“I-it’s okay. I was out of line. My problem, totally.”

“What? You’re kidding, right?” She pressed on without waiting for an answer. “No, Tara, I was a total, well, bitch. I wanted you to come meet my friends, really I did. We’ve known each other a long time and I want them to like you. It’s just . . . it was supposed to be just the four of us, and I didn’t want you to get off on the wrong foot with them. Xander’s girlfriend can be really mean, and I didn’t want to give her an excuse to start in on you. And Buffy’s just really good at putting her foot in her mouth. I was going to ask if you were free tomorrow night, but I was too busy talking myself into a deeper hole, which I’m doing again now . . . .”

“L-look, I shouldn’t have just taken off like that. You didn’t do anything wrong, Willow.”

“But . . . you ran away. I made you leave.” The rawness in her own voice served as a visceral reminder as to just how badly she’d been hurting over the afternoon’s events. Willow reached to take Tara’s hand, but Tara got up and began to pace around the room.

“No, I made me leave. It was dumb. It’s okay now.”

“Hey—how you feel is never dumb. Can’t we just . . . talk about what happened?” Tara was being evasive. Willow could see it in the way Tara wrapped her arms around herself. She looked just like she had the first time Willow saw her in the Wicca group, and it scared her.

“Do you really want to know?”

“Of course I do. I hate that I made you feel like you had to leave, even if you think it’s dumb. I don’t want to do it again.”

“It really isn’t your fault.”

“Tara, I’ve spent the past six hours feeling like shit for what happened. That’s not going to just go ‘poof’ because you say it isn’t my fault.”

“I don’t know . . . .”

“Tara. You can tell me anything.”

“Fine . . . .” Tara took a deep breath. “I-it’s just that the last week, you being here every night, you sleeping over twice, how . . . intense it is when you’re here, you flirting all the time . . . even though I know it isn’t, i-it feels a lot like dating. And I know it isn’t. But some part of me forgot this afternoon. Then when we talked . . . it broke the illusion.” Tara stopped, and turned to look down at Willow; Willow had never seen Tara look desperate before. “But please, I wouldn’t change how our friendship works for the world. So I don’t want you to feel like the banter or anything has to stop. I have a pl--”

Willow guiltily rushed to Tara and threw her arms around her. “I am so, so sorry. I’m . . . I’m a moron. I never bothered to think about how maddening this must be for you. You’re sure you don’t want me to slow down, give you some space.” Willow tried to move enough to study Tara’s face. She didn’t get far before she felt fingers digging into the small of her back.

“Don’t.”

“I’m not going away.” Willow pulled Tara in close, but never broke eye contact. “I just wanted to see how you were doing. Easier to do when I can see your face.” She gently ran a finger down Tara’s nose, the tip of which she gave a gentle poke.

“Better since you said you weren’t going. But I don’t suppose you’d be willing to not go from the bed? Standing doesn’t sound like such a great plan anymore.”

“Sure. Here, you sit down, and I’ll get you some juice. I can say from personal experience that your juice has excellent healing powers. Okay?”

Tara nodded and slowly let Willow go. “If my juice was sufficient to help you out, then it’s far and away enough for this.”

Willow waited for Tara to pull completely away of her own volition before moving herself. A moment later, Willow handed her a full cup. “One glass of Tara-brand heal-y juice.” Willow moved to sit next to Tara on the bed, but stopped herself. “Um, where do you want me to sit? I’ll sit anywhere you want including on the floor in that corner, or I could stand or--”

Tara shook her head, and grabbed Willow’s wrist. Willow let Tara guide her to the middle of the bed, behind where Tara was sitting. She wrapped Willow’s arms around her waist. Tara leaned back into Willow, and turned her head towards Willow’s face.

“I want you to sit right here.” With that Tara dropped her cheek onto Willow’s shoulder.

“Okay, I know I said I’d sit anywhere, and I am perfectly happy to sit here. But . . . this isn’t going to make you crazy?” Please say no. You’re all soft and comfy and your breath on my neck is all warm and tingly and I don’t want to move.

“I want you to know I’m serious that I don’t want things to change. Besides, I’m working on a plan. I went the lesbian alliance group today after class.”

“Yeah? Looking for other cute girls to commiserate with?”

“Uh--”

“Right, right, ‘with whom to commiserate.’ Damn grammar Nazi. Yeesh, add that to the list of things my father should never hear me say.”

“Good catch, but I was actually going to say I was looking for cute girls to date.”

Despite a solid grasp of physics insisting it was impossible, Willow was certain that the room’s temperature was currently oscillating between freezing and boiling.

Date? But . . . my Tara. Not some random lesbian’s Tara. Mine.

“So, any cute witches at your lesbian group?” Willow eeked out as nonchalantly as an individual plunged into a crazy room whose temperature changes were clearly in violation of multiple laws of thermodynamics could hope to manage.

“Cute, sure, but witches, no.” Tara chuckled. “Better than the Wicca group; they consistently bat zero for two, straight and queer alike.” Willow felt Tara lean further into her chest. “Present company excluded, of course.”

Absently, Willow brought her finger up to where Tara’s breath was making her neck feel all tingly.

I don’t get it. Touching Tara makes me feel all tingly because of the magic connection. Why should her breathing on me feel tingly? The tingly comes from the magic, I know it does. See, we can test it.

“Give me your hand.”

“Uh . . . okay . . . .” Despite the confusion in Tara’s voice, Willow felt Tara’s hand gently clasp hers. “What’s up?”

“Just running a quick experiment. Don’t mind me.”

Okay, tingly, check. Now for the variable. This should feel the same.

“Bring us that deck of cards.” She pointed at the cards she’d noticed when she came in. When Tara moved to get up, Willow held her in place. “No, use magic. That’s part of the experiment.”

“Okaaaay.” The cards floated across the room to Tara’s free hand. Willow felt a quite distinct jolt go through their joined hands.

Wait just a plank second here. That’s magic tingly . . . which is different than touching Tara tingly . . . and Tara’s breath on my neck tingly.

Willow stared at the deck of cards, trying to put together what corollaries to her faulty assumption needed to be revised. After a moment, she was distracted as she registered the identity of the top card.

“You have my card.” Willow tapped the top of the deck.

“W-what?”

“This card. I played poker last night. I almost had a royal flush. This is the card I was missing.”

“That’s . . . I’m sorry your hand didn’t work out?” Willow heard the confusion in Tara’s voice, but was too preoccupied to address it.

“It’s just weird. I literally prayed for this card, and now it’s here—no. I didn’t technically pray for the queen of hearts. I prayed for the . . . heart . . . I . . . .”

[blockquote] “I implore you, Neisa, blessed goddess of chance and fortune, heed my call: Send to me the heart I desire.”

“Of course. I like it when you smile. It’s pretty.”

Willow was on her hands and knees, one hand on either side of Tara’s head. She was leaning down low, so that only about six inches separated their faces.

The fluke fallout. That’s where she’d felt this before.

‘Man, her dimples are really adorable.’

‘Please say no. You’re all soft and comfy and your breath on my neck is all warm and tingly and I don’t want to move.’
[/blockquote]

Oh. Ohhhhhhhhh. Huh.

“Hey Tara?”

“Yeah?”

“Remember the magic words?”

Wingardium Leviosa?”

“No, before that.”

“Abracadabra?”

No.” Dammit, it was her deal.

“Uh . . . please?”

“Now you’re not even trying.”

“Willow, please. It’s late. I’ve had a stressful day. I’ve already had about as much deciphering social code as I can take. Whatever it is, just say it.”

“I’m interested in you.”

Suuuuuhhhh--weet! :D What a great way to start the day!! I can't wait to read the next chapter. I'm jealous you got to go to PAX, even if it was for work. Did you get to hear any cool speakers? Wait, forget all that, get back to writing you!

I had to come back to this after re-reading for the third time, and give you huge, huge kudos on Willow's POV for this chapter. This is exactly how I would imagine Willow working through this, in the scenario that you've set. Really, really well done.

Oh. Ohhhhhhhhh. Huh.

Genius. Really, it's just so Willow.

Give the girl a lollipop! Cute how she figured it out though, and her flash of paranoia/jealousy might have helped to get that flickering bulb to stay on.

I stumbled upon the Kitten, the Witches and the Bad Wardrobe Forums in general and upon your story in particular only yesterday, and decided to register just so I could say: great work!

I've always thought Willow and Tara were a great couple, but had never really tried to read fics about them till very recently (which I guess explains my not knowing about this site), when re-watching Buffy made miss them and, well, here I am.

And I've got to say, I love how you're handling this story! The writing is great, and both Willow and Tara are very in character.

Hope you update soon! Specially since ending this last part this way was just cruel (the good kind of cruel, mind you. ;-) )

I've been waiting for the title section. Quite honestly, your writing is simply too good for the title to be random. This tied in so very well. I also like that you switched the pov to Willow's but it seemed very seamless. I didn't even really register the way you had switched to her pov and were showing her thought process until I was most of the way through. And what a lovely thought process it is. Her test was adorable and those magic words... Lovely.

Yes, Willow, plain words are helpful, but then agin, they can be such tricky things to come up with.

Yum! I love checking up on a story and finding a whole passel of updates to devour. This is such a cute story; I love your W&T and their dialogue. You're doing a great job of keeping the flirt-o-meter high without jumping right to smoochville. Le sigh. Looking forward to more soon!

Re: Queen of Hearts Chapter 2 Part 4

Postby BeMyDeputy » Tue Sep 14, 2010 1:55 am

Aaaaand, I’m back. Sorry about the delay. My laptop failed, damn DC in jack, and while crucial things had been backed up already, I hadn’t backed up any of my work on this story. I’m really hoping I’ll be able to get some stuff of the hard drive eventually, but in the short term I had to rewrite my work on this section.

@LonelyTara: PAX was AMAZING; it was my third. My fiance and I run an independent game news and review site, and so I spent most of my time on the expo floor playing games and talking to developers instead of seeing speakers. I got to play a bunch of amazing games, some of which we’d seen in earlier versions at other game conferences. I did take the time to see the Wil Wheaton panel and a panel on game journalism. I also got to hug Jonathan Coulton (who signed the shirt I bought from him), get Paul and Storm to to sign my w00tstock SD poster, and to take a picture with Wil Wheaton, who also signed my w00tstock SD poster. I also got to speak to Chris Kohler, (important games journalist guy who works for Wired) about our website, which was super awesome. Oh, and I got Zombie Dice, a totally awesome game, particularly as a line game.

Oh, right. Story. I’m so glad you liked that line: it’s my favorite from this section. You singling it out makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

@bloodynails Welcome! If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t sit down and watch Buffy until this April. Some friends of mine had tried to show it to me a few years ago, but the timing didn’t work with school and stuff. Since I did finally watch in April, I have found this site, read bunches of stories, and started writing. It was a productive summer. Oh, and caught up with all of How I Met Your Mother in order to see more Alyson Hannigan . . . mmmm. Where was I going with that? Oh, right, welcome to the site, and there seems to be a constant stream of new people here, so don’t feel intimidated by other people having been here longer. There are exciting benefits to being new, like being able to sit down and read what there is of Neverland in one chunk, rather than over many years. (Hah hah, suckers.)

@JustSkipIt: I’m glad it wove in well. I remember noticing that the “heart I desire” line is at the front of the episode where I (and many others) assume that the nature of the W/T relationship changes. I had to resist the urge to point at the screen and shout “I see what you did there! Cuz, cuz, hearts are a suit, but also, like, for lovey stuff, and she doesn’t take the crystal, but then she comes home and she has it and so the heart she wants is Tara’s and AAAAHHH!!!” or something equally coherent (I had a similar reaction when Glory brain-sucked Tara and the “at least vampires just kill you” line). I loved that it was subtle enough that I hadn’t noticed it the first . . . many . . . times I saw the episode, but that given that telegraphy and foreshadowing are so common on Buffy, I couldn’t believe it was an accident. Then a few days later I ran into the clip of Amber singing “Queen of Hearts,” and it was just too perfect: I started writing.

So I didn’t lie when I said it was that clip that made me want to write this, but I left out the part explaining why it meant anything to me. Well, meant anything other than “Holy shit that was fucking HOT. I’ll be in my bunk.”

@vazy: Tautological comments are tautological. ;)

Chapter 2 Part 4: In Which there Is Disbelief and Powderkegs
a.k.a. In Which We Get Smoochies! Yay!

“I’m interested in you.”

The words, the exact words Tara had asked for a week ago, the exact four words that stood between Tara and deliberately taking the constant flirting and affection from Willow as anything more than friendship, hit Tara like a truck. The sound of those words had become the prelude to the times she indulged herself, against her better judgment, in her burning physical desire for Willow. But here they meant something different. They meant she was dreaming. Willow wouldn’t say those words. Couldn’t say them. She was a merciless tease, to be sure, but this would be unspeakably cruel.

It fit: Willow had told her that she was spending the night with her friends, and wouldn’t be coming over. The more she thought about it, the more Tara realized that the idea that anyone would leave Willow to do anything else was ridiculous; the mere idea that anything was preferable to spending time with Willow was laughable. Nor did it make sense that Willow would come over and apologize for the afternoon’s awkwardness, as it had so clearly been Tara’s forwardness and presumption that had caused the problem.

For the second time that day, the rose-tinted world Tara had constructed came crashing down around her, shredding her as it fell. I fell asleep after dinner. She never came by. We never talked. I have to apologize again. I have to explain again. I have to hold it together . . . again. It was too much.

And so, in the arms of the woman with whom she was falling so desperately in love, Tara began to sob. She felt soft fingers brushing away her tears, but it didn’t matter. She felt strong arms pulling her in close, but it wasn’t real.

“Tara?” She heard her name spoken with such compassion and tenderness that it only made her sob harder.

“I thought you’d be happy. Not that I was just trying to make you happy—it’s just . . . you had me promise.” Tara felt Willow’s shoulders collapse. She didn’t recognize the waver in Willow’s voice as she continued. “I’m sorry. I can go . . . .”

“No!” She flung her arms around Willow; she realized at once that she’d rather be kept company by a dream than be left alone with her desperation. “Of course that would make me happy. Euphoric. T-that’s why it hurts so m-much. I figured out I’m d-dreaming.”

Tara felt the fingers that had been stroking her cheek move to her chin, tilting it upwards. Though she succumbed to the gentle pressure, she closed her eyes tighter against the possibility of reality breaking through.

At once, Tara was at peace. She was safe and warm. The soft, tender feeling radiated throughout her body, originating from a simple pressure against her lips. It was the very embodiment of gentleness. Tara was vaguely aware of her own lips returning the pressure of their own accord, but was primarily mindful of the serenity that had completely replaced the devastation from moments earlier. As she began to return the pressure, the feeling slightly changed. Her body began to hum as quiet notes of want and excitement joined the dominant ones of tenderness and security already present to form the perfect chord of calm and passion.

Tara pulled away, dumbstruck. She knew what it was to dream that Willow was kissing her; it was a feeling with which she was intimately familiar. But that . . . . If the dream of Willow’s lips upon hers was a shadow on the wall, that was the Platonic form that cast it.

Tara wasn’t dreaming.

Willow’s interested in me. When she told me, I started crying, which probably gave her a heart attack. Willow kissed me. I pulled away, which probably made her think I wanted her to stop.

“I-I’m not dreaming, am I?” Tara was amazed that the question could fill her with such panic.

Willow smiled warmly at her, and gently shook her head. “No.” After a moment, her smile faltered. “I hope that’s okay.”

Tara nodded hurriedly. “Qua okay.”

Willow chuckled weakly. “You and your ancient Greek philosophers. But seriously, that…” Willow pointed between their faces, “…was okay? You seemed kinda freaked.”

Tara smiled as she determinedly placed her hands on Willow’s shoulders, and gently pushed her back as she closely monitored her face for any sign of hesitation. Met instead with expressions Tara could only discern to be glee and anticipation, she continued until Willow was flat on her back. She settled her hands on either side of Willow’s head, and let her hair fall past her shoulders to frame Willow’s face.

“I need you to do me a favor,” Tara whispered gently. She slowly began to close the distance between their faces as she continued. “I need to you to take everything that happened after you said that you’re interested in me and put worrying about it on hold. Instead, just . . . focus . . . on . . . this.” Tara was about to close the final six inches when she realized where she was and paused. “Seriously, Willow, how could you be here and not want to--”

Tara was cut off as Willow did exactly what Tara had stopped herself from doing a week ago. Arms pulled her down by her waist and head, and once again Tara experienced a Platonic ideal. The feelings of want and excitement reverberated louder in this incarnation, which tore a moan from Tara’s throat. A point of electricity repeatedly traced the shape of her lips. When Tara recognized the cause as a moist and localized pressure caused by Willow’s tongue, her lips opened without a second thought. Tara melted as the source tentatively entered her mouth. She moved her tongue to greet the welcome visitor; as they met, Tara was completely consumed in ecstasy.

Some unknown time later, Willow gently pulled away and rolled Tara onto her side. She placed a gentle peck on the tip of Tara’s nose. So that’s what noses are for. Convenient.

“Hold that thought.” Willow said as she sat up and moved to remove her sweater. Tara’s heart stopped until she saw that there was a camisole beneath the sweater. “Sorry, overheating.” Free of her extra layer, Willow lay back down beside Tara and smiled happily. “You kiss new moon kisses.”

“Is that so?” Only obliquely interested in how to translate this piece of Willowese, Tara began to place a series of kisses along Willow’s jaw, each increment increasing in intensity and desire. She gently ran her hand up and down Willow’s back; her heart raced as her fingertips failed to discover a bra beneath the undershirt.

“Yep. You definitely kiss new moon kisses. Which really only should make sense to me, I suppose. You see . . . well . . . um. We really need to talk.”

Talk? The hell we need to talk. We’ve been talking all week. Unconvinced, Tara continued her journey until she reached Willow’s earlobe. Carefully, she pulled it into her mouth and sucked gently for a moment. “No talking. More kissing.” Tara punctuated her point with her teeth.

All at once, Tara found herself on her back, her ass clenched within a small hand, and felt lips close roughly on hers. Now, when Willow’s tongue moved forward, it demanded entrance. If their first kiss had been the embodiment of gentleness, this was the embodiment of need. As a slim thigh began to push its way insistently between her knees, Tara realized that if Willow were to decide to take her, here and now, that she would be unwilling to stop her. As the thought crystallized, Tara shuddered: it was at once arousing, intoxicating, and intimidating.

Willow must have felt Tara react, because as rapidly as she had maneuvered herself on top of Tara she had retreated, and sat at the end of the bed. Painfully aware of the sudden loss of contact, Tara propped herself up on her elbows in order to meet Willow’s eyes, but found them wide and jumpy. Her mouth was slightly open, but at the same time a distinct frown. That was so amazing, but then it stopped and now she looks like regrets it?

“W-what just ha--”

“Oh, no, I am really, really sorry. I shouldn’t have—you already showed me you want new moon kisses and here I am with the waxing gibbous kissing . . . .” Her voice became increasingly desperate as her hand moved to her ear. “It’s just . . . it’s been a long time, and I know that isn’t an excuse, but teeth mean something very specific to me.” She dropped her head for a moment before looking back up at Tara, resolute. “Talking. Very important. I have to tell you about . . . and once I do, you may not want . . . this.”

Tara raised an eyebrow, incredulous. “I can’t imagine anything about you that could make me not want this.”

“You can't imagine this.” She sighed. “I’m a Scooby.”

What the--kissing time is being interrupted for this? “You’re a cartoon dog?”

Willow rolled her eyes. “Ugh, I can’t believe that won the vote. 'Slayerettes' was perfectly serviceable, and far catchier, but nooo, Xander said it sounded too girly.”

“I see why this discussion was so important that the kissing had to stop.” Tara only halfheartedly tried to keep the disappointment out of her voice.

“Sorry, I’m just not excited about this discussion, even if it has to happen.” Willow took a deep breath, fidgeting nervously. “It’s a really long story. A three year long story, in fact. The abstract goes like this. Monsters are real: not just The Gentlemen, but also demons and more importantly vampires. As long as there have been vampires, there’s the slayer: ‘one girl in all the world,’ chosen to fight the forces of evil. Right now, that girl is my friend and roommate, Buffy. Almost as long as she’s been the slayer, my friend Xander and I have fought along side her with the help of her Watcher, which, for reference is like crazy-slayer-culture speak for boss and trainer, Giles. We don’t get the epic strength or mystical reflexes or any of the other package benefits that Buffy gets, but we help with research and patrolling. Suffice it to say I have a top-secret, high-pressure, extremely deadly hobby that can demand my attention at the drop of a hat, and if I don’t give it my all, the world can literally end.”

Demons. She knows about demons. That’s bad. Possibly good. We’ll see in Octo—no. Not thinking about that now. Tara pushed away the thought as she felt Willow’s expectant eyes on her. Tara smiled slowly as she considered her. Willow’s interest in her certainly beat out the existence of monsters for ‘most interesting news of the evening’. “You’re concerned that your altruistic efforts to save the world and the lives of everyone on it would somehow make me find you less attractive?”

“Really?” Willow beamed, the tip of her tongue pushed past her teeth. The tension had visibly left her, and she moved quickly to lie back down. Tara gasped as fingers wove their way into her hair. “’Cause the world? Tries to end. At the worst. Possible. Moments.” Willow interspersed her words with gentle but urgent kisses; Tara knew that any court in the land would consider a response given under these conditions 'under duress,' but didn’t care.

“I would be honored to have my kissing time interrupted by you running off to save the world.” Sealing her offer with a kiss, Tara added, “As long as it exists to be interrupted, I’m happy.”

“That can be arranged. I mean, I have this course in learning to kiss one Tara Maclay I just signed up for, and I was really hoping you could help me cram.”

A few pleasant minutes later, a thought occurred to Tara. “So, while I see why that was so important that the kissing needed to pause, it doesn’t explain your unique and . . . lunar? . . . descriptions for kisses. You w-were about to explain and then I was rather satisfyingly pinned to the bed.” Tara looked at Willow in earnest. “That can happen again, just so we’re clear.”

A smile flashed on Willow’s face before a pensive look set it. She gazed at Tara, apparently lost in thought: Tara wasn’t used to Willow carefully choosing her words, and so felt that it would be best to leave her too it without significant distraction. As a gentle sign of support, and to fill the gaping hole that was left when she wasn’t touching Willow, Tara ran her fingertips softly up and down Willow’s arm.

“You know the League of Nations?” Willow began all of a sudden.

“Uh . . . President Wilson. Post World War I. Fell apart. Set up Germany’s feelings of helplessness that helped feed into World War II.” Tara had no idea where this was going, but trusted Willow to get her there. Now that the silence was broken, she busied herself with the delightful task of discovering where on Willow’s neck elicited the best response when kissed, sucked, or nipped.

“Right. So, the League of Nations turned Europe into this powder keg, but after the war, it was the best anyone could think of to try and put the world back together. I’m stuck in a similar sort of position: I’m know I’m opening a powder—oh please do that again.” Tara complied, and Willow moaned. “Um, where was I? Right. Opening a powder keg, but it’s the best I thing I can think of to do. But to reduce the number of potential sparks that would make the powder go boom . . . can you believe me when I say that I like this? That I want this?” Tara let her face be guided away from the task at hand to find Willow looking seriously at her. “Do you understand that this is something I’m seeking on my own? That being here with you like this makes me happier than I have words for, which given my loquacious tendencies, is pretty darned impressive? Do you believe that?”

“Why wouldn’t . . . .” Tara’s face fell as she realized where Willow was going with this. “Oz. This is about Oz.”

Willow nodded slowly, guilt etched into her face. “I know this isn’t the best time . . . I don’t really want to think about him right now. But a few things about what happened are relevant.” Tara found herself rolled onto her back again, but this time slowly and gently. Willow pressed down into her, and looked down, concerned. “I am absolutely one hundred percent sure that I’m interested in you, and that there is nothing else in the world I would rather be doing than being here kissing you. Okay?”

Tara pulled Willow’s face down into her own, and kissed her deeply. “I believe you.”

Tara felt Willow relax, but only a little.

“Now, he hurt me pretty bad when he left. You know that. But I . . . he loved me. Despite everything that happened, I would never want anything bad to happen to him just because he loved me. I couldn’t bear it if he died for the crime of loving me. Promise me you would never do anything to hurt him.”

Died? Willow, what are you talking about?”

“Do you promise?”

“I promise. I may be upset with him for hurting you, but I don’t want him to die. Why is that a question?”

“Oz is a werewolf.”

Werewolf? Willow dated a werewolf. Her only boyfriend was a werewolf. That’s one hell of a reference point. And yeah, if the wrong people found out . . . he probably would die. Werewolf. Why does that sound fami--? Her eyes went wide as she realized.

“Your nightmare. Did that . . .?” Tara ran her eyes and fingers over Willow’s throat, looking for a bite mark.

Willow softly squeezed the hand at her throat. “Don’t worry, I’m not: he never bit me. Parts of my dream . . . yeah, parts happened. But he never physically hurt me; Buffy saved me.”

“Please pass along my thanks for that. But don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone.”

“Thank you.” As if to reassure Tara that the discussion of Oz hadn’t dissuaded her of her interest in their activities, Willow kissed Tara enthusiastically. “I have one more lengthy and obtuse metaphor before the payoff for playing with explosives. Come to think on it, you must really, really like me, because this garden path is pretty long.”

Tara laughed. “I think I could listen to you talk forever. It’s . . . enchanting.” Understanding that Willow would be talking for a while, Tara resumed her earlier exploration of Willow’s neck with her lips.

“Well, it would be a lot harder to return to kissing you back if I talked forever. So I think I’ll just stick with this last tangent: people talk about comparing apples and oranges like it can’t be done, or that you can’t learn anything informative from it, but that’s not true at all. You can make lots of comparisons: for example, they both make delicious juice. Apples don’t have to be peeled, but oranges do. Now, imagine you were to spend your whole life and the only fruit you had was apples, and then in college you realize you want an orange; the only words you’d have to describe the orange were words you learned eating apples. Because apples are your only point of reference. It doesn’t mean you’re making a better-or-worse comparison, it just means that’s the only vocabulary you have. Do you see what I’m saying?”

“You’re saying that you’ve only made out with guys before, so when you say things like ‘wow, oranges need peeling, that’s different,’ that I shouldn’t worry that it’s because you’re upset that I’m a girl.”

“Exactly! That works really well, too, because girls wear bras, providing an extra layer before nakedy-goodness, so the peeling metaphor is apt, and I think I just implied I wanted to see you naked, and that’s just a little disorienting, not because I don’t, but because different parts of my head are catching up on this ‘interested in you’ thing at different rates, and I think I should just stop talking.”

Taking a page from her victim’s playbook, Tara rapidly rolled on top of Willow, pinning her to the bed. “Oh, you can talk about wanting to see me naked any time you want.” Tara lowered her mouth to Willow’s ear and whispered, “In fact, if you keep talking about wanting it, I’m sure someday it could be arranged.”

Tara felt arousal shoot through her body and completely take over her entire awareness. She had no idea how long it took for her to identify what was happening: teeth were latched onto her jugular, and she was pulled down by her hips into Willow. Tara moaned, luxuriating in the carnal feeling of Willow wanting her, which resulted in teeth and hands grasping harder.

Eventually, Willow pulled back, breath ragged, to meet Tara’s eyes. “You are one heck of a seductress, missy. I can’t believe you’ve never had a girlfriend. How do you come up with things like that?”

Could it be because I’ve been dreaming about seducing you from the moment I first saw you? That before I heard you speak a word I had already identified you as the most attractive woman on campus? With a smirk, Tara got up and wordlessly walked to her desk.

“Hey! Where did my sexy blanket go? I was kissing my sexy blanket!” Tara resisted the urge to smile at Willow’s faux distressed tone.

Tara pulled down the now-unnecessary reminder from next to her desk, and returned to Willow, handing the post-it over as she merrily resumed her role as alluring bedding.

“Your Greek assignment taught you enticing things to say?”

Tara grinned, and shook her head. “It wasn’t a Greek assignment.”

Willow looked at her in disbelief. “You lied to me about your note? But . . . I’m mentioned! Is it about me? What’d you write about me?”

Tara shook her head again, taking pleasure in Willow’s consternation. “Oh no. If you want to know, you can learn enough Greek to read it.”

“Meanie.” Willow stuck out her tongue.

Tara considered her for a moment. “You’re baiting me into kissing you.”

“Well . . . yes.” Willow smiled, apparently pleased to be caught. “I’m glad you caught on. So . . . .” Tara recognized Willow's smile as expectant and hopeful.

“I want my payoff first.”

“Payoff?”

“I navigated European History, werewolf care and feeding, and philosophical discussions about fruit comparison to find out what you mean by ‘new moon kissing.’ You said the fruit was the last metaphor. I want my payoff.”

“Right. That. Well, it turns out that the wolfy-ness wasn’t the only thing about Oz that cycled with the moon. The tone of . . .” Willow blushed, “other things . . . changed with the phases of the moon. So, when I say you kiss new moon kisses, I mean that you kiss like this.” Willow softly cupped Tara’s face in her palm, encouraging her face closer. Tara felt her heart melt as Willow’s lips briefly brushed against her own. As their lips met once again, Tara felt the chord of feelings Willow had sent through her in their first kiss take over once more.

“That’s a very nice turn of phrase. And handy. I could see wanting to express that sentiment without taking two minutes to say it.” Particularly if you plan on saying it to anyone that isn’t me.

“You really don’t mind that I think like that?”

“How could I expect you to see the world differently? Besides, do you realize I spend all day studying language? Greek, Latin, mythology, and English. Lately I then come home and spend the evening learning to speak Willow. This is just another example of how you make words come together in amazing ways. I told you. It’s enchanting.” Tara watched Willow glow as the words of praise sank in.

“Speaking of classes, do you think you could help me study for that new class tonight? I’d really like to show marked improvement by tomorrow.”

“I could help you out with that. I mean, what if there’s a pop quiz tomorrow? You want to be prepared. I’d feel terrible if I distracted you from studying and then you got a bad grade.” Tara settled in to spend the night making sure that Willow would excel on any future exams.

Very nice update! I must say it made me appreciate my philosopy lessons much more and gave a new alluring reason not to forget the myth of the cave... anyway, I'm really enjoying this story, I'm sorry that I haven't replied before and I hope you'll keep writing!

Very well-paced, and believeable thought processes. (I know what it means when you've been taught not to believe your own eyes and soemthign happens that's outside your defined ideas; quite plausible tara woudl think she was dreaming.) And truly delicious Willow-speeches that weren't exactly babble, and the more effective for it.

Yes, Tara, imagination can make up for a good bit of missed experience - I know because a couple women back in the 80s said things to me similar to what Willow told you she was surprised about.

Absolutely adorable, fantastic job on the communication and stirrings of passion and affection between these two! I can't wait to see what lessons Tara and Willow will have in store for each other next, and I think it will be hilarious to see how quickly Willow picks up Greek....

This story is absolutely wonderful!

It is also a horrible story to read when you are seriously crushing on what is most likely a totally straight girl.

I really liked the way you used the moon phases to describe the types of kisses and it also took me a moment to realize what Willow was talking about when she started randomly mentioning the moon.

Very nicely done. The moon phase kissing is totally adorable, and not just from the Oz standpoint.

Yay, for full Scooby disclosure! Ahhh, but will it make it easier for full Tara disclosure?

Enjoying this story, and looking forward to your next update.

Oh, yeah, Tara will spill the beans on the demon thing very soon. Lessie, this is day two of "The I in Team", so February 9th, and Tara tells Willow the day before her birthday, therefore on October 15th. Right after her father does. So, about eight months. That's soon, right?

One word for you guys: canon.

Say it with me now: Canon. Ca-non. Canon.

EDIT: Sixty-ninth!

EDIT: I STILL LOVE YOU. I'm just a sarcastic ass. But only with people I like! Don't leave me alone. :pray

That was really sweet. I'm sort of shocked/surprised at Willow's initiative and passion given her slowness in realizing what was happening. She truly seems to be a person of soul and passion in being able to go with it even though her physicality with Tara is sort of foreign for her. Tara's initial reaction seemed a little strange but then she is a little strange I guess. Quite lovely though. I liked both of these Willow POV updates a lot.

Debra,
I have a lengthy response to that, but no time.

Quickly, though: I'm confused. That was Tara's POV. That's why the kissing was all impression-painting-y rather than photorealistic. And with the Plato.

Not to mention the fact that the initial section would have been WAY to distressing for me to write.

More later.

EDIT:
Okay, so since the things you touched on are things that neither girl is going to think about again (as they have much nicer things to think about), so I'll address them here, rather than in a future post.

So, this whole episode, and therefore this chapter, is about breaking perceptions, including character's self-perceptions and reader perceptions. I could probably write a decent length commentary on what this chapter means to me, as I was going for a very distinct effect in each part. If anyone cares, let me know, and I'll write it.

I'm sort of shocked/surprised at Willow's initiative and passion given her slowness in realizing what was happening. She truly seems to be a person of soul and passion in being able to go with it even though her physicality with Tara is sort of foreign for her.

I'm writing Willow very much from my own experience, though I did it backwards with respect to her. When I finally got it through my head that I liked my now-fiance, it was really easy to take the toolset I had from making out with girls and apply it to him. Willow really reacts here without thinking, and once she realizes what's she's doing she backs off. Will things go as smoothly as things progress? No: hands in new places is always disorienting, particularly if you thought you were done having new places to put hands.

Tara's initial reaction seemed a little strange but then she is a little strange I guess.

There are two things I can think of that you could find strange. One is her initial disbelief->despair reaction. As to that, well, how many times did you let Heather trick you before you figured out just how damned appropriate "Neverland" is as a title? After the remarkably shitty day Tara had, after folding her hand, to go back to the poker idea, and going to look for someone to date as a distraction, she is presented with the thing she wants. I had about five different reactions for her here, and this is the one I liked the best. I just couldn't see Tara, in this situation, accepting it whole cloth. I toyed with her thinking Willow was just being mean and moving to throw her out of the room, but that didn't seem right, either. But she's so emotionally drained at this point that she doesn't have the energy to be strong.

The other reaction I can think you might think was strange was pulling away from the first kiss. She realized that something was off, something was different, but was a too preoccupied to figure out what it was. Also, I think some part of her had realized that if this was real, that she had started to sob at probably the worst possible moment.

Okay, back to writing. I'm maybe 2/3 of the way done, then it needs to be beta-ed, so hopefully this weekend?

Hey all,
First, I want to say I'm really super flattered that this is now at 73 posts and over 3100 views. It's really gratifying to know people are reading and enjoying this as much as I'm enjoying writing it.

Glad people liked that lunar descriptions for kisses, and that I've provided at least some people a reason to remember The Allegory of the Cave. They both really seemed to fit Willow and Tara, respectively.

Sorry school is keeping me so occupied; I am continually working on this, but damn it keeps me busy. And this weekend I wasted a bunch of time going to an Among The Ghosts signing. Damn, Amber's super nice.

@vazy: Yay! Hugs! It's the scientist in me, really, that gets me antsy when things clash with what's already known. I'm such a dork.

Chapter 2 Part 5: "In Which there Are Pleasant Memories and Unpleasant Presents"
a.k.a. In Which Reality Strikes

Willow skipped her way back towards Stevenson. Despite the distinct lack of either sleep or caffeine in her system, she couldn’t contain the excited energy coursing through her; she had to resist the urge to run back to her room, gleefully screaming the whole way. The only part of her body she could keep still were her hands, which had the essential task of securing the dolls-eye crystal. Since she could no longer actually kiss Tara, stupid Latin class, she rushed toward the next best thing: gushing to Buffy about each and every minute of it. Periodically during her trip, the energy in her hands would build up, and she’d have to squeeze them around the stone, which made her remember how it ended up in her possession.

Tara pressed the crystal into her hands and looked her in the eye, steadfast.

“Tara . . . please. That’s too much. It’s an heirloom.” One of the reasons she’d had such a hard time tracking down a dolls-eye crystal of her own is that they were usually passed down from teacher to student, the crystal picking up power from each user. When the magic and the crystal were passed down within a family, the effect was amplified. She couldn’t take that from Tara or her family.

“No, it isn’t. Willow, I found it in my attic collecting dust. Just because I think it was my Grandmother’s doesn’t automatically make it an heirloom. I’ve never even used it before the blessing we did at sunrise.

“But--” As they disagreed, Willow remembered the earlier discussion that had torn her apart.
Why couldn’t we have had this discussion in the first place?

“I won’t take ‘no’ as an answer. This could help with your Scooby stuff, and the safer you are, the better I’ll feel. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can consider it a long-term loan.” Tara’s voice picked up a sensual tone. “I do expect a good interest rate, though. I’m sure I can find some way for you to pay me back.”

As she passed the dining hall, Willow brushed her upturned lips with a thumb. If she got the force just right, she could trigger the perfect memory of Tara exacting said price. Tara had kissed her with such a range of pressures throughout the night that it was almost harder not to provoke a recollection of Tara’s lips against hers. In one night, Tara had demonstrated her ability to kiss her way around the lunar calendar completely erratically. Willow couldn’t get over how she could be softly kissing Tara one moment, only to be roughly pushed down onto the bed the next. The dynamic nature of the experience was completely novel: Oz never turned on a dime from one phase to another, and Xander . . . well, the whole fluke experience was like being stuck under a full moon for three weeks. But with Tara, it kept changing. The plasticity of the interaction was new, but felt natural: the way things were supposed to be. It made her think of the first time she saw The Wizard of Oz, and how it felt when the world changed from black and white to color.

Once it had clicked in her head, that the sum of all of the odd thoughts, feelings, and actions of the recent past was her interest in Tara, Willow had simply accepted the conclusion. Her promise to tell Tara took precedence over thinking it through, particularly given Tara’s relatively intimate location at the time. Had she asked herself, in those early seconds, to define “interested,” she would have posited that her emotional and spiritual connection to Tara was manifesting as a physical attraction. She would have guessed that it was her head and her heart that were interested in Tara, rather than the rest of her body.

Until, that is, Tara had unknowingly triggered a reflex. Like a lower leg swinging forward at the strike of a doctor’s hammer, Willow had her pinned to the bed at the clench of Tara’s teeth before her brain registered what was she was doing. In one fell swoop, Willow was convinced that her body was in fact interested in Tara, and that it was going to act on that whether her brain went along or not, thank you very much. She picked her way gingerly through her memory, and let herself linger in the pleasant minutiae of the moment: the lack of resistance as she pushed Tara’s shoulder down, the readiness with which Tara’s mouth opened, the exhilarating feel of hands pushing her shirt away as they moved to caress the skin of her lower back, the soft curve of Tara’s ass in her hand that provided the perfect leverage for her to move her leg forward into . . . nothing.

Not actually nothing. Cold vacuum of space: totally absent. Just . . . different. Willow stepped gingerly around the proximal emotional landmine, but allowed herself to consider the cliffs notes of her first visceral apple/orange moment. Her feet slowed to a walk as she approached Stevenson, very glad that she had Buffy to chat with about this. While Tara had been amazingly gracious and secure about her past with Oz, Willow wasn’t ready to have a “so, that turned me on like crazy but with so many aspects of this being new, I’m going to need explicit feedback” conversation. Thankfully, Buffy was around, not only to be repaid her vicarious smoochies, but also to listen to Willow’s concerns and give advice. Gonna tell Buffy all about my night, she thought, as she opened the door to Stevenson, and Buffy’s going to say . . . .

What would Buffy say? She’s going to ask if this means you’re gay, dummy. Of course she’d ask the obvious question. Even Tara had brought it up briefly last night, but Buffy was sure to be curious what the night meant about Willow’s sexuality.

“I wasn’t going to ask tonight, but after the bit with the powder keg, this is pretty minor. If you don’t mind me asking, what made you think . . . I mean, how did you realize . . . how did we get here?”

“Honestly? It’s kind of embarrassing. When you said you went to the alliance to find a girl to date, I started to spaz. I mean, I had just assumed that I wasn’t interested, so I missed all of the cues that said that I am. Then I got all jealous, and everything went tumbling down. Then it was just a matter of processing to figure out what it all meant.”

“You’re telling me that successfully finding attractive companions for watching Xena was the key to making this happen?” Tara smirked. “I should have gone months ago.”

“Pretty mu--wait, you watch Xena?”

“Of course I do. I mean, they take your queer card if you don’t.” Tara rolled onto her back, and pulled Willow on top of her. She traced circles on the skin of the small of Willow’s back with one hand while she entwined the other hand in Willow’s hair. “As of today, I wouldn’t let it go for the world.” Tara pulled Willow in for a deep kiss.

“‘Queer card’?”

“Oh yeah.” Tara’s mouth kept flickering into a smile, but it never stayed around; it made Willow think Tara was trying to look serious; however, her light tone gave her away. “It shows up in your wallet once you’re officially gay or bi. It serves as your official credentials; the whole thing is tightly regulated. It has a Kinsey number right on there and everything, so you don’t have to figure it out yourself. What it all means is that you really don’t need to spend the next few weeks staring at hot women to figure out if you think they’re attractive. Just wait, and if you should have a card, you’ll get a card.”

“Hah hah. Like I’d do that.”

“Oh, you would. But now you know you don’t have to do it. Much easier.”

“Why would you think I would do that?”

“I’ve met you.” Willow looked down, skeptical. Tara continued gently, but without the jovial tone in her voice that was present a moment ago. “Willow, you’re an empiricist. Even if you’re wrapped up in all this right now, eventually you’re going to wonder what it means that you’re interested in a girl. You’re going to need to know if it generalizes, and I know exactly one way to do that.”

In all likelihood, Tara was right. Now, however, wasn’t when Willow wanted to have this discussion. Never sounded like a much better option. “Tara, do we have to talk about this now?”

“I just want you to know that labels aren’t important to me right now. I obsessed over it with Sylvia, and it was a waste. I don’t need you to be my girlfriend, or identify as gay or bi. I want you to be Willow. You’re interested and that’s enough for me. Everything else . . . you have to give yourself time to figure it out.”

It was enough for Tara, but chances were it wouldn’t be enough for Buffy. (She slowly walked to the staircase.) How many times had they changed in front of each other? How many times had they walked around the campus arm-in-arm? (Though she’d dashed down Tara’s stair’s three at a time, she climbed the way to her room in single steps.) Would Buffy understand that her interest in Tara didn’t mean that the affection had never meant anything other than friendship? Once, Willow would have been sure she could make Buffy understand that was the case. (The more she thought, the heavier each step felt.) Could have talked openly about how she felt about Tara: qualitatively different from how she’d ever felt about Oz or Xander, but similar just the same. Could have picked apart the situation, and tried to figure out what it all meant. But it’s not like I can just NOT tell her; I told Tara that Buffy’s the slayer, and I have to tell Buffy that she knows. When she asks why, I have to have a reason. But after last night, the cracks in their friendship were showing, and the change in her friendship with Tara could be the blow that turned the cracks into fractures. (Willow dragged her feet over the top step, glad she only lived on the second floor.)

It wasn’t just last night. A week ago, when Buffy was bubbling about the relative advantages of various breakfast foods, Willow hadn’t brought up Tara. Instead, she had claimed she spent the night at the library. She had taken credit for noticing the dark feel to the magical interference that helped lead them to Ethan, even though the assertion had in truth baffled her. Why didn’t I just tell her where I was? Before she had a chance to consider the question, she was at her door. She took a deep breath, and turned the handle. I hope she’s not too mad I missed breakfast. Not knowing what to expect, she pushed open the door.

Okay, made bed, no Buffy. Good, I could really use some time to think things through and there she is. “Oh, hi.” I have to tell her Tara knows. I can’t not tell her. It’s against the rules.

“Hey.” Yep, gonna tell her. “Out all night, huh?”

I can also play “state the obvious.” “You too.” Willow glanced at Buffy’s made bed. Didn’t I just sit on that bed with her, asking her if she slept with Parker? Didn’t I gush to her about everything with Oz? I can tell her about Tara. We share this sort of stuff . . . don’t we?

“Yeah.” Yep, she totally slept with Riley, but isn’t talking. Why is there awkward silence now? We’re not awkward silence-having-friends. Okay, I’m going to tell her Tara knows about the slayer thing, and then I’m backed into a corner for everything else. Ready, set, going to tell her, gods this silence is deafening, no I’m not, fleeing now. Willow turned and moved to her dresser, where she placed the dolls-eye crystal.

“My friend Tara from my Wicca group is actually a witch, and I had to tell her you’re the slayer.” There, that works, and then she’s going to ask why and I’m going to say . . . .”

“Sorry, about bailing on you guys at the Bronze.”

“Yeah, that’s . . .” totally okay because I had a much better time making out with Tara. “I . . .” was really pissed about it, until I realized it gave me a chance to fix things with Tara, who by the way I had to tell that you’re the slayer, because the kissing pushed her over into the “needs to know” category. “Don’t worry about it.” Argh! I just need to figure out what she’s going to say, so I know what to say, and then I can do this.

You’re going to tell her, and she’s going to ask:
1) Does it mean I’m gay?
A: retrieve.set(current.data):
- Anywhere but here
- Xander
- Oz
- Tara
- Lack of interest in Buffy, other girls
evaluate.set(current.data):
No. Yes? Maybe? I don’t know! Is this question even binary?

2) What about Oz? Do I still love him? What if he comes back?
A: ERROR: Too damn confusing. Abort, Retry, Fail? Retry.
A: ERROR: Too incredibly painful. Abort, Retry, Fail? Abort.

She just came in too, so maybe we can grab some breakfast, this weird air will clear, and I’ll come up with something other than clasping my hands over my ears and going “la la la la la” to her questions, and I’ll have done my Scooby duty and told her that Tara knows.

“’kay.” Can she even tell that things are wrong? I mean, I know she has a boyfriend, so it’s obvious where she was. But me . . . she didn’t even ask? Really? She asked where I was last week when I didn’t come home. Why not today?

Willow was about to ask Buffy is she’d eaten when the pager went off. “Man, they really keep you hopping, don’t they?” See, friendly, we can do friendly. Next time we’re doing friendly instead of chilly and weird, I’ll tell her about Tara. I have to tell her.

“Yeah, gotta go. I’ll see ya?” Did it used to be this hard to talk to Buffy? Have things really changed, or are things just so much easier with Tara that everything else feels hard? Even things that are hard to talk about with Tara are easier than this.

The phone rang, which broke Willow out of her thoughts. Tara’s in class, Xander’s probably asleep. It’s probably for Buffy. “Hello?”

“You're there at last. We have a problem. Where's Buffy?” As always.

“Just left. Beeped away by her new buds.” Oh, Initiative. How you remind me of Faith, in your making fast friends with Buffy and suddenly being more important than me. Man, you guys had better not turn evil like her. Ugh, no, Giles’ problems are more important than my being sarcastic or all doomsday-ish. “You want me to go after her?

“Uh, no, no. It's your help I need, actually.”

“Really? What do you want me to do?” The thing I do is magic. He wants my help. He trusts me to do magic again?

“It’ll be easier to explain once you’re here, but suffice it to say we’re in need of some magical defense at the moment.”

“Magical defense? I’ve been working on protection spells lately.” And now I feel more at home there than I do in my own room. Stupid Buffy-weirdness.

“Wonderful. I trust you can be over to my apartment soon?”

“Sure, Giles. I had a late night studying, so I still need to take a shower. Let me clean up quick, and I’ll be there in forty-five minutes. Sound good?” Oh, studying, my faithful excuse. Do they really think I need that much time to learn my schoolwork?

“Time really is of the essence right now, Willow.”

“Fine, then come pick me up. I’ll be outside Stevenson in twenty. See you then.”

Willow hung up the phone, and dialed Tara’s number. She wouldn’t be home, of course; Willow had only left so Tara could get ready for Latin. But she could leave a message. As she waited for the machine to pick up, she the large star chart that now hung next to her bed caught her attention.

Wow, it was only about fourteen hours ago I changed that before going to the Bronze. Was that you, subconscious, that had me do that? Cuz if so, good job. I’m not really in a “thinking about . . . the Dingoes” mood right now. Particularly after that total weirdness with Buffy.

“You have reached 5-3476. Please leave a message.”

“Hey Tara, it’s Willow. You should have a longer message, so when I have to leave you a message, I get to hear more than like two seconds of your voice. Anyway, I’m calling because Giles just called, and we’ve got badness. It sounds minor for now, but trouble that starts at ten in the morning is never polite enough to be done in time for dinner. So on the off chance I have to miss that quiz tonight, I was hoping you could ask the instructor if I could take a make up version. I know you two are close. I’ll do everything I can to make sure I can take it at the normal time, though. I’ll call to check in once I know more. Hope Latin went well. And now I really should go take a shower before Giles shows up. See you tonight, I hope!”

*****

“Did it work? Is the atmosphere ionized?”

“I'd venture yes.”

After looking around at the others, Willow tried to push her hair back down. Well, at least it’s pointing the right direction now. “Great. I’d like to be driven back for class now.”

“Sure Wil, I’ll take you; I’ve got Dad’s rusty shitbox—I mean, car, today. Ahn, you stay here and help Giles any. I’ll be back in a jiffy.” Xander grabbed their coats and his keys.

“Hey! Still being tracked here! You’re letting wagons leave the circle? I see how you lot are.” Spike took a long drink from the bottle of cognac.

Willow opened her mouth to object, but Xander beat her to the punch. “Trust me, you do not want to get between Willow and class. Don’t worry, the spell will last until you can come back, right Wil?” He turned to face Willow and whispered, “It will last, won’t it?”

“Yeah, it’ll last. Just pick me outside the dorm . . . .” Willow glanced at the clock. Spell should be in effect for around four hours, I get out of class in two and a half hours, but Tara has a long day, so she won’t be back for another five or so. Rats. “ . . . in three hours.”

Five hours to get a stupid thing out of Spike’s back. That should be plenty of time, and then they won’t need me, and I can go back to the original “spend the night with Tara” plan. As I’m not discussing it with Buffy, I guess I’ll have to talk to Tara about how to tell if she likes what I’m doing. Man, I bet we could have a really nice night of “does doing X turn you on?” With demonstrations. Okay, yes, suddenly, I like this plan.

As they climbed into the old car, Xander broke Willow out of her daydream. “That was some quality mojo, Wil. Did what we needed without Spike kissing anyone. Very nice.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah, thanks. I think the crystal really helped focus the magic into the spell, rather than just running all over the place.”

“Blah blah magic stone blah. Very deep. So, where’d you get the stone?”

“What?” Xander noticed the crystal? How did Xander notice the crystal? He doesn’t know anything about magical theory. Well, except being ingredient guy for years, but that doesn’t really count.

“The stone, the one you were just talking magical theory stuff about. Where’d you get it? It’s new, right?” Or there’s the fact that I just mentioned it without thinking. Dammit, Xander. You’re not supposed to be observant.

“Yeah, it’s new. I . . . .”

runprogram.tell(Truth):
Me: “Oh, my friend Tara loaned it to me.”
Xander: “Yeah? What’s she like?”
Me: “Witch, sweet, giving, funny, clever, gay, soft . . .warm . . .beautiful . . .amazing kisser.”
Xander: *crashes car*

“ . . . it’s on loan from a girl from my Wicca group. She found it in her attic collecting dust a long time ago, but in fact, they are really powerful magical artifacts.” I don’t want to crash, that’s all. I’ll tell him about Tara soon. Tonight, once Spike is out of the picture.

“Well, I suppose that even if you didn’t find any real witches in your group, you found something useful. Like when Giles had that crazy soul orb for Angel in his office pulling paperweight duty.”

“Yeah, well, we’re supposed to be meeting tonight, so if there’s any way you could get this Scooby stuff wrapped up before I get out of class, that’d be optimal.”

“Well, I’m not the one playing surgeon, but I can try to maneuver Giles out of research mode if he gets through. Anya and I had plans tonight, too.”

“What, more shopping?” With the hope of spending another night with Tara on her mind, she found teasing Xander to be highly entertaining.

“Shut up, Willow.”

“Correction. It’s not safe for any of us.”

Well, shit.

Hi there! Firstly, let me say a big thanks to your friend in the pic - definitely a nice rack!

Very nice background thoughts by Willow for these scenes. The show kind of left lots of things like that out and left me wanting to know more. It was interesting to see her thought process during the awkward conversation with Buffy.

I am really enjoying your take on all the stuff/thoughts that they didn't show us on the show. Very nicely done. Can't wait to see what's next.

Update, update, update, early morning update! :D This part of Ch. 2 was really well done (as it predecessors have been). Getting into Willow's head when she returns to the room with the d.e. crystal was a bit sad, as we see the impact that the growing distance between her and Buffy so clearly, but it felt very visceral, very authentic to the moment. I love her attempts to scientifically analyze what's happening with her feelings for Tara, and I for one CANNOT WAIT for the "what turns you on" testing. In detail. Please.

Re: Queen of Hearts Chapter 3 Part 1

Hey everyone,
If you liked the Willow-Buffy scene, I again urge you to thank dlline, as she was the one who encouraged me to include it. If you didn't like it, blame me for how I wrote it.

@wimpy0729: I am deeply indebted to my friend for not being upset with my having taken this photo. And for being gorgeous. I'm glad you're liking the story. I love how these characters think, and it's fun to explore how they must have experienced this part of their relationship. I also really like that there's actually a decent amount of miscommunication and lying to themselves going on, and that the more-or-less alternating POVs helps me show that.

@LonelyTara Early morning updates are my thing: I live on the west coast, and am a total night owl. That and my fiance would make fun of me, so this all happens after he goes to bed.

I really loved chapter two as well. I think it's going to be my favorite for a while. I got to work in a lot of imagery and allusions and symbolism that my English teachers told me were hallmarks of good writing. This chapter I sat and looked at the time line I made based off the show and go "I have SIX story days to get them from nothing to sex? And one of those nights Willow is at Xander's? I don't care if they are made for each other, that's some mighty bad decision making. I think the Parker fling was longer than that." Since writing fiction is new for me, and therefore writing sexy fiction is also new to me, this is somewhat daunting. Man, I can't believe they shrank time so much during this sequence of episodes.

As for the scene with Buffy, I always thought it was telling that Willow has come from this night that fundamentally changed her relationship and yet that scene is so . . . chilly. I think I watched it 20-30 times while writing it up (thank you Netflix). When Willow says in "Yoko Factor" that things have been wrong "since Tara," it really feels like she's talking all the way back to here, because this is when their friendship starts to visibly fracture.

@Zampsa1975: Glad you liked. I had fun writing the faux computer scripts that ran in Willow's head. I also had fun pulling out the old DOS prompt "Abort? Retry? Fail?"

You'll get your testing; this whole chapter is ramping up their physical relationship for the nether realms sex. Er, Nether sex spell. Nether realms spell. Yeah, that one.

Chapter 3 Part 1: "In Which Tara Learns What it Is to Be Scooby-Adjacent"
a.k.a. Why they call it a Teaser

“ . . . Hope Latin went well. And now I really should go take a shower before Giles shows up. See you tonight, I hope!”

Tara smiled. Despite the unhappy subject matter of the message, Willow's voice was bouncy and energetic, much as it had been when she left the room this morning.

BEEP!

“Um, hey, I'm just calling to let you know I can't make it to the study group this evening. I would like to drop by and pick up the book I left with you, though. I'll try dropping by around five. Hope I catch you.”

Tara frowned. Despite the mundane subject matter, Willow's voice was concerned and edgy. Plus, the subject matter was completely fabricated.

Tara glanced at the clock. 4:55.That certainly qualified as “around five,” so Willow could be knocking any second. Why was the second message so strange? Did something happen with her friends? Did she change her mind about last night? Tara froze at the thought.

An urgent knock caught Tara's attention, and she quickly moved to open the door. Willow stood on the other side: her eyes anxiously darted down the hallway, and her bottom lip looked like it would bleed if it would have been chewed much longer. Her aura was deeply colored by fear and apprehension. All in all, Willow looked really spooked.

“Hey.” One word utterances, not her style. What’s wrong?

“H-hey. Come in.” Tara stepped back to let Willow enter. Before Tara got a chance to start to close the door, Willow had it shut and locked. Willow whipped around to face her, and began to advance on Tara without reaching to actually close the distance. Tara slowly backed away: the air between them was significantly different from that morning.

“I've got fifteen minutes, but I'm really not supposed to be here at all. I just couldn't not see you, not after last night.” Okay, she wants to see me after last night, that’s good. But she’s not supposed to be here? Tara's heels hit the foot of her bed and Willow finally reached forward to pull her in by the hips for a tight embrace. Tara felt her doubt about Willow potentially regretting last night drain as hands quickly made their way into Tara's back pockets. Willow rested her forehead on Tara's and began to rapidly explain. “Short version goes 'scary organization tried to kill Buffy. Buffy lived. They know that we know what they tried, so we're going into hiding until we figure out what to do, lest they try to kill us too. If they know that you know me, they might start paying attention to you, too.’ It's scary, but we'll be okay, we always are. Right now I just could use some reassuring kissing, if that's okay with you?”

As Willow spoke and Tara understood the source of Willow’s anxiety, she held Willow tighter and tighter. She wanted to let Willow know that she was afraid for her safety, that she the thought of losing her, especially now, was heartbreaking. But Willow had asked, had pled with her to be a source of comfort. So when Willow cautiously tipped her chin forward, Tara kissed her gently, thoughts of how their first kiss had been a bearer of peace in her mind.

Peace and tranquility, it turned out, were not the reassurances that Willow sought. Tara moaned as Willow’s hands squeezed, and one then shot up under the back of her shirt. Willow moved away from Tara’s lips, and placed a hot series of kisses along Tara’s jaw. “Sorry, new moon kisses are good, but the whole ‘fear of death’ thing pretty much sets me on full moon urgency. If that’s not okay, I can not . . . .” Willow’s hands began to retreat.

Tara reached back and pushed down on Willow’s hands to hold them in place. “Very okay. You just let me know w-what you want.” She pushed Willow’s hands harder into her, and squirmed happily at the pressure. “That feels really, really good.” Confident Willow wouldn’t try to remove her hands again, Tara wrapped her arms around her, mirroring her hand locations. “If you were playing ‘Make Tara feel amazing,’ you win.”

“Good for me.” Willow beamed with pride as she pulled Tara in for a long kiss.

“I think that me feeling amazing is also good for me. Everybody wins. So, miss ‘limited time budget,’ want to lie down and tell me what I can do for you?”

“Ooh, yes please.” They settled onto the bed facing each other, and hands delicately pushed hair out of faces. “I know what I want. Show me how to make you feel good.”

Tara smiled, and gently asked, “Last night didn't show you?”

“Well, last night kinda gave me the impression that touching you at all makes you feel good.”

Tara smirked. “Have I done anything to dissuade you of that impression?”

“No, but that doesn’t mean . . . show me something specific that you want.”

Tara considered Willow for a moment before she carefully caught Willow's arm by the wrist, and gently placed her hand over her heart. Filled with both trepidation and excitement, she watched Willow's face carefully; the entirety of the previous night had been limited by Willow's early forwardness and this marked the first time Tara made the first move. Willow's eyes were wide, and fixed on her hand.

“Last night you seemed rather enchanted with the phoenixes on my shirt. M-maybe you're just a big Fawkes fan. I was hoping there was more to it than that.” Quietly she added “If you're waiting for permission, you have it.” Tara softly pulled down on Willow's wrist, but it didn't budge. Hastily, Tara pulled her hand away, but kept composed. “It might just be an apple-orange d-disorientation thing, and that's okay, too.” Despite Tara’s expectations that Willow would withdraw her hand, it stayed in place, her eyes still locked on it.

“No, Tara, that's not it. I just . . . .” Willow tore her eyes from her hand and finally met Tara's gaze, her teeth again nervously assaulted her lower lip. “I'm afraid I'm going to do it wrong. I mean, kissing I know how to do. I'm good at kissing.” Tara nodded encouragingly. “But this I don't know how to do.”

“How's this then.” Tara placed her hand directly on top of Willow's. “You let me put your hand where I want it. Then if someone messes up it's me, and you aren't to b-blame. I try to put your hand somewhere you don't like, and you just don't let me. Sound fair?”

A wide smile formed on Willow’s face as her eyes lit up. “Really? We can do that?”

“I don’t see why not. So, does that sound okay?”

Excited, Willow responded, “Yes.” Needy and desperate she added, “Show me how to touch you.”

The sound of a claxon filled the room and Willow winced.

“W-what on earth is that?”

“That’s my timer. I have to run. I . . . .” Tara gulped as she saw Willow’s eyes drop to her chest. “I think I want to take my time with this. Can I get a rain check for the next time I’m not pressed for time?” Willow looked up again, eyes dilated and cheeks flushed, only to close her eyes and slowly shake her head as if to clear it. When she reopened her eyes, she clenched her teeth and smirked. “I told you the world tries to end at the most inconvenient times.”

“Yes, you did try to warn me. And knowing just how inconvenient it can be . . .” Tara kissed her reverently, “. . . my answer remains the same. Go. Hide.” Don’t die, she added silently. Tara stood, and helped Willow up.

When she made it to the door, Willow turned to Tara and hugged her tightly. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be with Buffy. You just stay safe, okay?”

Tara nodded into Willow’s shoulder, not trusting her voice. Is this what it is to be involved with a Scooby? Being left both incredibly turned on and terrified? The claxon sounded again, and Willow pulled slowly away.

“You need to go. It’s okay.”

“I’ll be by as soon as I can, I promise.” Tara nodded, and smiled weakly at her. Willow opened the door, and glanced hurriedly down each direction of the hallway. Apparently satisfied, she backed into the hallway and waved at Tara one last time. “Take care.”

Tara waved back. “You too.” Once Willow was out sight, she whispered, “I love you.”

Dibs.

Very unique turn of events. Usually Willow stays with Tara because the Initiative doesn't know about her. I'm interested to see what other changes will occur.

Update soon.
