Relinquished Symmetry

Postby hermitfish » Tue Sep 28, 2004 5:17 pm

Hey folks...for interested parties Insanity Sessions is in mid update. This is a little something from my archives that I resuscitated and edited a bit. Here we go...

Relinquished Symmetry

Disclaimer: Many rich people own BTVS and its characters…I am not one of them.

Rating: R

Author’s Notes: This storyline takes everything up to halfway through New Moon Rising as the gospel. I have made a BIG change that may make some kittens ‘thwack’ me with a shovel…or, more appropriately, a sledgehammer. Also, some of the dynamics of Angel have been altered to suit me. This is an angsty piece.

Addt’l note: A few pieces of dialogue come from the show (This Year’s Girl, NMR, Fear Itself, etc.).

Feedback: Of any sorts…sure. On the board is fine. No posting elsewhere without my consent.

PART 1

The infrared detector blinked as a visitor walked through the glass-paneled door of the office. A small buzzer informed the proprietor of the business that a visitor had arrived deep within her back office. She scowled at her laptop screen one last time before turning to the front door security monitor and pressing her intercom button. “The door is open. Please come in.”

Xander walked through the door with two vials in his hand and placed them on the dark cherry desk. He pulled the memory card out of his tiny digital camera and placed it beside the glass containers. “We snagged and sliced two new unknowns tonight. I thought you might want slime samples.” He smiled encouragingly as she nodded. “Need anything else boss?”

She declined with a polite shake of her head. He fretted internally...this was quiet even for her. Once upon a time he would have made a joke or consoled her with warm words of comfort. Not anymore.

“Ring me if anything comes up,” he finally said as he held up his cell phone and shook it for emphasis. He left Scarlet Laboratories with his sad eyes deep in a familiar thought. “I miss you, Will,” he whispered as he climbed in his construction truck and drove away.

--------------------------

“What did you rent this time Xander?” Buffy asked as she pulled two bags of chips from the cabinet. Thursday night was family night-that meant movies and lots of foods not known for their nutritional content.

“I didn’t. We have kung-fu fest on channel 37,” he replied as he grabbed a beer from the fridge. “You want one Oz?”

“No, I’m good,” his black spiky haired friend responded from the sofa.

“I’ll take one,” Dawn ventured, knowing the forthcoming response.

“Dawn!” Buffy yelled. Dawn snickered...Buffy was an easy book to read. Like Green Eggs and Ham easy.

“I’m kidding,” the former key shrugged as her older sister thrust a bowl of popcorn into her lap. “Hey...watch the slayer strength.” Buffy rolled her eyes.

“I honestly don’t see why you don’t just give her an alcoholic beverage,” Anya started. “I mean she is technically older than all of us combined.”

Before Dawn could agree, Buffy cut her off by saying, “My house...my rules.”

The doorbell cut off any further argument. The slayer casually opened the door, but nearly slammed it shut when she comprehended the woman in the doorway.

“Tara?” The name came out half-questioning and half-accusatory.

“Can I come in?” the blonde witch asked calmly. She had had all afternoon of her flight from Seattle to prepare for this meeting. Three years ago she thought she’d never come back to Sunnydale. Seeing Buffy again made an unstoppable flood of memories crash to the forefront of her mind. And these were just the waves caused by a short blonde supergirl she really never got a chance to know. She could only imagine what would happen if she ran into Willow. The woman she had fallen head over heels for …the same woman with whom she had never fallen out of love.

“You’ve got a lot of nerve coming here,” Buffy began before holding her tongue on a slew of bitterness that was prepared to come forth. “But seeing as I owe you a couple for the Faith body switch and the Lowell House, I’ll give you five minutes.”

Tara gulped. The slayer had only taken two seconds to make her feel like that weakling of yore. Her aura was golden and shaped like a proud halo, which was usual, but it was also slightly jagged with little angry flecks of red. Am I causing that? Why does she seem so mad at me?

“Okay,” was her meek one word reply as she stepped through the threshold.

The atmosphere of the room quickly went tense at the notice of her presence. A very uncomfortable silence passed like a funeral procession. Tara reluctantly lowered her defenses and felt the rush of emotions from the room’s inhabitants. She wanted to gauge what she felt was a disturbing undercurrent.

Xander’s aura was naturally jovial, reminding her of party streamers. It tinged a sad, deep blue when he cast his eyes over her. Anya’s visual manifestation was an enthusiastic colorful pulse, which was unfazed by the new arrival. Dawn...something was unusual about Dawn. Her power trace was different, not of demon, human, or slayer lineage. A bright tunneling green light encased her small frame. Anger and distasteful resent swirled like mist through the overpowering color. And Oz. Oh heavenly creature...does that mean Willow’s here too? She took a deep breath. He was difficult to read because of the his carefully self placed inner calm mixed with the natural aggressive hunting instincts of the wolf. She did somehow think he was pleased to see her again. What the Hell is going on here?

Finally, the one person who always spoke her mind broke the silence. “You’re Willow’s witch friend. Have you come back to give her orgasms and make her happy again?”

Tara’s eye bulged. They know about our relationship? Err, former… That wasn’t the kind of question she expected and she had no readied response. “What?” finally stumbled out of her mouth.

“If I was still a vengeance demon I would’ve granted her a wish after what you did. It’s much better to take vengeance than to let your emotions bottle up and make you bitter,” Anya said with a shrug before taking a handful of chips from the bag and crunching merrily.

“What I did?” Tara’s voice echoed curiously. “I left to make it easier on her...so she didn’t have to feel guilty for getting back with Oz.” That was mostly the whole truth.

“She didn’t choose Oz,” Dawn nearly shrieked.

It felt like time stopped a brief moment for Tara. Maybe by some sort of temporal demon who took pleasure in slowing down time to watch human hearts shatter. Dawn’s words filtered through the complex processing centers of her brain. She picked me. She picked me and I ran. Slowly a paint-by-number picture of the biggest mistake of her life filled in. And I hurt her...made her unhappy and bitter. My Willow. My beautiful Willow.

Tara dropped the tome and notepad she had been carrying to the floor with a thud. Her apocalyptic warning no longer seemed that important. She stumbled weakly towards the door and went out to the porch. She took gigantic cold gulps of the fall night air. Staring out at the clear starry sky, she remembered one of her last memories of her love.

Do you really want to Willow? I mean its okay if you want to, you know, wait,” Tara said as they crossed the campus green. She knew this was a huge step for her and didn’t want to pressure her into something she would later regret.

“I want them to know. They’re my friends and I want them to know why I’m so happy. And if they’re not all with the return of the happiness then they were never really my friends anyway.” She stopped and turned to Tara, running her fingers through the ends of the silky blonde tresses. She leaned in close and whispered in her ear, “I mean who wouldn’t want wonderful you for a girlfriend?”

“That’s a lot of w,” Tara responded as her heart jumped erratically and she wore an obviously smitten grin. They walked towards Giles’ place to attend a Scooby meeting. A meeting the blonde had been invited to since she had helped them so much lately. Tara felt wonderful and had finally built up the courage to ask Willow if she wanted to get a cat together. It was sorta a symbol of their togetherness-a little ball of responsibility and commitment...plus she really wanted a cat.

Tara sighed into the darkness. She’d been so happy that day. It seemed like everything fit for once. She was doing well at the university, she had gained a couple of friends through study groups, and, most importantly, she found the very love of her existence. Life was good.

Then Oz walked through Giles’ door and everything fell apart. Falling apart...breaking into pieces-that was what happened in her life. Still, she held a sliver of hope.

She went to see Willow the next morning and came face to face with Oz. It was clear that he had spent the night. Her sliver of hope turned into a jagged piece of glass. It ripped furiously through her veins until all the blood went cold and she was dead inside.

After that, there was only one option left. The only thing she knew to do. Go. Run. She knew how to run. She had learned it long ago and in all sorts of ways.

She packed a trunk, filled it tightly with her magickal supplies and books. Just as she was beginning to pull a suitcase out to pack her clothes she heard a knock at the door. She knew who it was as she could feel the mystical tingle of Willow standing in the hall. She stayed quiet and still. Then she began to hurry...Willow would be back after her class and she wanted to be gone before then.

Buffy reopened the door to find the taller girl white knuckling the wooden moulding of the rails. She was staring hard, almost painfully so, at some empty point in the night. The slayer found she oddly empathized with the girl she recalled being nice but reserved.

She thought she was helping Willow. It’s funny how sometimes you try to save people from heartache only to create more. She fleetingly thought of Angel for a second and internally fretted. She found it hard to stay angry with a woman who was so obviously beating herself up right now. Self-guilt is always the most brutal form of punishment.

“I don’t know if you remember but standing around alone at night in Sunnydale is like on the Surgeon General’s Warning List,” the slayer quipped as she look around for creatures of the night.

“I can handle myself,” Tara said bluntly, not moving a muscle.

“I can tell. You seem stronger...my spider sense is tingling,” she said as she strode to within a couple of feet of her right side.

“I know I have no right to ask but how is she really?” Tara turned to Buffy and pleaded for an answer with her blue eyes.

“I wish I knew,” Buffy replied regretfully, moving to face the Wiccan. “She’s pretty cut off from the world. We’re not close anymore...I work for her but never in direct contact. Xander sees her sometimes when he delivers samples and stuff to her.”

“Samples?” Tara asked curiously.

“She runs an analytic laboratory...she’s heavy with the science and computer work and she hires us out to kill or capture the monster baddies. She has this like huge demonology DNA database she built herself. She’s so good she does like all the forensic work in town…which in Sunnydale is like nothing to shake a wooden stick at. She’s living comfortable. She certainly pays us enough.”

Buffy spoke with a mixture of pride and numbness. Like she had cried quiet tears somewhere far from her loved ones over the loss of her best friend. She did, Tara thought ruefully. She remembered something her momma told her when she was young. Consider your actions for they’re like dropping stones in the fishin’ hole-their effects ripple out farther than your grasp.

She had managed hurt everyone in that room in one way or another. Now duty had brought her back to give what would probably be unnecessary aid. Being a demon hunter was very rewarding-it made her feel useful…needed. Today it felt like a slap in the face.

That was perhaps one of the best 1st chapters I've ever read. What a way to hook your readers and drag them into your world. I for one can't wait for more.

hey, I'm liking' this very much. Are you going to update regularly or torture us? Like I'm one to talk. Just thought I'd ask.

So, Willow is like super science girl. Its nice to see her get away from the magick stuff every once in awhile. However, what are her motivations? What is her ultimate goal? Does it have to do with the warning Tara has? I believe that Willow was too far gone with her love for Tara by New Moon Rising. She just needed a push - which Oz provided - to confirm her feelings.

How has the lack of Tara's presence effected the storyline?

This story was written very well. I look forward to more...

First...I have to say thanks for all the kind wordage...makes me jump back on the keyboard and write more. Next off...part two will be up on Friday. The wait is nearly over.

Maccoda: Wow...I think that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me about a story .

amazonaa: Good to see you're in the 'yay' on this story too. :) Thanks for reading.

DarkChild: Yes, poor Willow and Tara indeed... forgiveness will be a tricky thing for the both of them.

ladydameon: As much as I love torture, I hope to be kind to the update lovin' kitties. I'm shooting for biweekly postings (with the exception of the part 2) with both this story and IS. I can guarantee it for now because several of the next parts are written, only in need of editing.

You're asking all kinds of intriguing questions, which I love, and makes me think I'm on the right track. I adore science geek, super computer gal Willow and I thought she'd play well in this story. (Here's the portion where I turn my head and give no hinty answers to any of your questions :) ) I will say that canon differences are noticeable without Tara and with Willow playing a different part. Naturally this big NMR change and some other happenings in their recent pasts have affected the girls behaviour (i.e. this is not a meek S4 Tara).

I absolutely appreciate your readership...makes my favorite little writing obsession all worth while.

tarawhipped: Torment is a good word for what I was going for with Tara...both in the fact that leaving Willow has haunted her all this time but also in now she realizes that it was unnecessary. I didn't get to play with Willow so much in this part but you've used a dead on descriptor (disturbing) for her as well. I'm glad the intended emotion is coming through and I'm thrilled to have you along for the ride.

snuggle79: Delighted for the praise and more will be arriving soon.

: Yes, more tomenty badness is in store...it's gonna be a difficult process for her to work through her feelings and deal with other situations in the story. Thanks for reading.

PART 2

Buffy’s cell phone began chiming from the pocket of her leather jacket. Two others could be heard from inside the house. She looked at the text message as Xander and Oz walked outside, the dark haired boy carrying an axe and the shorter one a crossbow.

“1530 Peterson Way…possible vampire nest…we need wheels cause this one’s on a timer,” Buffy translated the abbreviated wording.“And you guys thought I’d never figure out the Willow coding system,” she smirked as she pulled out Mr. Pointy and twirled him back into her other coat pocket. The trio climbed into the Jeep parked in the driveway and Oz started the engine. He met Tara’s eyes, betraying no semblance of emotion and asked, “Coming?”She wordlessly moved into the backseat with Xander.

The house was ranch style and certainly didn’t look suspicious from the outside. As they got closer, however, Tara could feel a congregation of black vampiric energy.“Six or seven of them,” she whispered as they cautiously searched the perimeter.

Xander and Oz looked at her inquisitively but Buffy only nodded a faint agreement. The slayer kicked in the back door and was promptly met by two black cloaked bloodsuckers as she rolled into the house and off to the left.Three more ran outside and Oz picked one off quickly.

“Stay back,” Tara yelled at Xander, as she quickly pulled a thin ruby encrusted dagger from each of her boots and guided them with a levitation spell into the sternum of the other two vampires.

“That’s no good,” one of the bumpy foreheaded demons cackled as he proceeded towards the blonde.

“No, it certainly isn’t,” she calmly responded as she opened her palms towards the pair.“Sparks to a flame.”The ruby briefly flashed and the two vampire burst into flames.“For you anyways.”

“Hey now…don’t take all the good deadpanning.I have a reputation to uphold,” the slayer said as she finished off the last undead with a stunable uppercut followed by an impaling.

“Not to scathe your reputation Buff, but where did you learn those moves?” Xander asked as he joined Tara’s side.

“Lots of places, I guess.I’m sort of a monster fighter for hire,” she answered humbly.

“…We’re not here to engage. This is strictly recon.”Tara turned to the redhead with a toothy smile.“What?” Willow questioned. “You said recon…You’re like cool monster fighter.”

“Consider yourself on the payroll,” Oz put forth, internally impressed by the magickal display.

The witch picked up her blades and tucked them back into the boot sheathes under her pants. Her attire had changed…long skirts and baggy blouses were but a memory. In their place were comfortable, practical cargo pants and form fitting tops and tanks.“How do you fight in leather all the time?”The question came out of the blue, as no one else was riding on her train of thought.

“Always in style…I like to look my best when saving the world.” Buffy began investigating the house.

“Can’t argue with that logic,” Oz imparted.“Looks like we broke up a party,” he added as he switched on the lights and found a large circle of sand surrounded by symbols.Xander pulled out the camera and began photographing the scene from a multitude of angles and distances.

“Damn, I think were a little late,” Tara interjected.“The spells over…and it looks like we got a conjurin’.”

“Can you tell what ooglie booglie came forth?” Xander asked.

“Is that a technical expression or an term of endearment?” Oz replied, stoically.

“I don’t think Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, or an endless box of tissue monster scooched out of that circle,” Buffy replied on a tangent before returning to focus.“Do we need to clean this up?”

Tara ran her hand through the sand.“No, the spell is finished and the circle has been broken. We could carpet clean for the security deposit but I think the renters are probably dead, you know, with the pack of nightcrawlers already casting in the basement.”

Xander removed his cell phone and hit a stored number as they proceeded back to the vehicle. After waiting a moment and hearing the usual machine pick up the call he said, “Hey boss…it’s Xander…we got the vamps but missed the conjuring. We’re en route to drop off the pictures.”He hung up the phone succinctly.

“You should show her Tara’s research too…if we have a big bad coming I’d like to get as much heads up as possible.” Xander nodded and they pulled up to their destination minutes later. The sleek red letters glowed Scarlet Laboratories into the night.Tara looked at the three-story building, not terribly large, but a beauty of glass panels and steel. It looked positively futuristic on this street in this town. The witch let out an impressed whistle.

“I’d go with spedoinkle, but I’m partial to funny sounding words.” Xander jumped out of the car and opened the door for Tara, who was still staring.

“This is where W-w…” She couldn’t even finish the name.In over three years she had only been closer to her love in dreams. She willed her heart to beat and her lungs to breathe as these functions were no longer involuntary. She found courage deep within her recesses to stand…to move.

Their hands were still linked…and they had been that way for several minutes after the spell.Tara was rubbing a comforting circle with her thumb onto the palm of the redhead.Willow had her eyes fixed on the subtle movement, a light grin cascading to and fro on her face. Finally she let out a sigh that broke the moment.

“Ss-sorry,” Tara stuttered badly as her hand pulled back like she had touched an inferno. Her eyes went down to the floor and were obscured by a sheet of blonde hair that seemed to automatically cover her embarrassment.

“Hey,” Willow began as she ventured through smooth locks.Tara couldn’t release her eyes from the rug fibers.Moving beyond her hair to a creamy cheek, the aspiring witch slid her fingers down trembling skin and lifted her chin so their eyes were on even ground.

“Don’t hide from me, Tara.Never from me.”She tenderly leaned in and pressed her lips to a second pair that were fuller and warmer.“You’re so brave and you don’t even realize.” A first kiss had never been sweeter.

“You make me brave,” Tara suddenly whispered to fates unknown. She then entered the office without a thought of looking back.

Well well well, it seems we have an interesting turn of events. Tara is some cool monster fighter but I do detect fragments of the Tara we first met with coverings of an older Tara - which we grew to love.

But when did Oz come back? Why did he come back?

Somehow, I think Willow would be indifferent at this moment. May be to caught up in the research of Tara's or the failure of stopping the spell....How did she know there was a spell going on? I'll say she kept in touch with her witchy powers?

This all has to eat Xander and Buffy up inside - to have their best friend completely shut them out....

Update please...soon.....

Another great chapter! I love that Tara has seemingly changed so much (confident, cool monster fighter, makin' with the one-liners), yet just the thought of Willow still brings out her shy, stuttering side. It definitely fits with the scenario you've created of her going off on her own adventures, but having left a big part of her life unresolved.

I REALLY can't wait to find out more about Willow. It's not that surprising that she would channel her interests towards magic/monster research, but the fact that the others, especially Buffy, seem almost subservient to her is a really interesting dynamic. It's like she's become an entire Watchers Council by herself.

Looking forward to more.

Postby russ » Fri Oct 01, 2004 8:15 pm

I'm very impressed with the beginning of this story. Given Tara's state of mind at the time of NMR, it's easy to see how she could have made that "biggest mistake of her life."

Tara has grown to become a "cool monster fighter" in her own right, powerful and confident. Willow, on the other hand, has become a recluse, cold and shut away from her former friends. Still fighting the good fight, but shunning human contact, no doubt to keep her heart from being broken again.

It is hard to imagine Buffy et al. as Willow's employees in the demon fighting business. You can see how much they're hurting from the loss of their friend, while still in a way proud of her accomplishments. It's especially nice to see Oz as a valued member of the group. He too often gets a harsh treatment in fanfic. In this one he seems the Oz of old, calm and in control of his inner beast. Also, his approval of Tara's joining the group seems to indicate he's come to terms with the past.

I'm looking forward to those promised biweekly updates, and to seeing how Willow & Tara reconcile and find healing, at the same time saving the world (again).

So Oz stayed because Tara took off and therefore didn't cause him to lose his inner cool or get picked up by Riley's cronies? This should be interesting, very interesting.

I can't wait to see Willow's reaction to Tara's arrival in Sunnydale. Will she be a touch bitter? I'm thinking that she must be because of the way the gang are acting.

It's like an update...only not

Postby hermitfish » Mon Oct 04, 2004 5:55 pm

Just a quick stop by for part 2 replies...

cnd1us: Next update is Willow-focused so we'll begin to see what's going on with her. I'm glad you're enjoying.

ladydameon: Concerning Oz...this story alters from the point where Tara went to see Willow and ran into Oz instead at her dorm room. There was no hap-happy scene, no Oz attacking Tara scene, etc. I am going to address Oz probably in Part 4...so you'll get a better idea what happened with him in NMR and beyond.

Quote:
How did she know there was a spell going on? I'll say she kept in touch with her witchy powers?

Very astute observation...will be addressed also in part 4 I believe (I have a scene or two I want to slip in somewhere and I think it will be there).

Quote:
This all has to eat Xander and Buffy up inside - to have their best friend completely shut them out....

It does...absolutely. The relationship they have now is so strained and Willow has made herself very unattainable. Thanks for the comments...I love involved readers.

irishlassie101: It'll be a regular agonyfest for a while but there will be light in all this darkness at some point in their journey.

tarawhipped: Is it okay if I make you my official reviewer? You seem to have a line on exactly what I want to express.

Quote:

You've totally hit it...I wanted to show cohesiveness between Tara and Buffy & Co. How easily she fits in with them and how this lifestyle has become part of her. I also wanted to show the impact of her time with Willow...how it still affects her (the cherished memories/flashbacks) and how she stills draws strength from this love that she no longer has anymore.

I glad you want get to know Willow because she's up next. Thanks for reading.

russ: Welcome and I'm glad you like. I thought Tara's state of mind in NMR fit with what I was doing here. Especially since she was so sure that Willow would return to Oz and that she could spare her beloved suffering by leaving and making the choice easier. Buffy & Co. have an interesting business relationship with Willow, which I hope to better define soon. But it is a business relationship only- a crushing blow to her friends that love and miss her.

I like Oz...and I think he's sometimes made the villain because it's convenient. In this story he is white hat through and through. He also better appreciates what Tara means/meant to Willow and, as you said, has come to terms with it. And he's also gonna help fill in some of the early gaps in the Willow history...

So you noticed that little biweekly promise bit did ya? :) Well, I think I'll be able to fulfill it for now.

Maccoda Hey I got a WOW....muchly appreciated. Willow the mysterious and her reaction to seeing Tara again is in the works.

Well, that's all for now folks...earliest next update could be is Sunday but if not then shortly thereafter.

hey just caught up with this fic and i must say it was a bit of a nasty shock for me when i first read that tara left willow because she thought that willow was going to choose oz...but then even though tara was gone she STILL didnt choose him! but she was massively hurt by tara and became cold and distant from the rest of the gang. this is definately an avenue that i havent seen taken before and i really like it.

also, i like how you had tara change when she went away. i can see something like leaving the one you love making you tougher and it obviously did that with her. but its also nice to see that just the thought of willow makes her the way she was...like even though the monster fighting and whatnot has made her tougher and more independent, theres still a little part of her that was left untouched by all that.

anyways, great fic and i cant wait for the next update! the first meeting between willow and tara should be interesting.

I've never seen NMR addressed this way either and I'm glad its coming off as something of a new take on the situation. Thanks for the kind words.

Okay...on to the next part

PART 3

The bedroom was dark, the only glow of light came from the laptop screen.Willow typed a set of results into a spreadsheet with an accustomed ease of someone who often worked in a poorly lit environment.“Incoming message,” chimed over her work, interrupting her keyboard barrage.

She clicked once on play and her phone message was retrieved and relayed.“I guess Xander will be over soon.”It was said flatly…calmly.

She pressed a button on a rather large remote and a projection screen came down. With another button the screen suddenly had nine security pictures available for viewing. She knew it would be quiet because none of her security cautions had been alerted.

“Cerulean…auto-unlock for Harris1,” she commanded as she continued through her last batch of data. The system responded, “Affirmative.” It was now set to unlock the doors once the entryway scanners detected his specific presence. She blew a quiet sigh as she finished her most pressing work and stretched on the king size bed.She went back to task with a simple click of her‘to do’ list.

[*]Update weekly test results and send to DA’s office

She deleted that one, looking further down the page.

[*]Recalibrate and clean lab equipment

Not tonight,
she grumbily thought.

[*]Run standard testing procedures on field samples (1 from Fri., 2 from Sat.)[*]Upgrade Office laptop[*]Order groceries[*]Send out dry cleaning.

None of it seemed truly pressing, but she was not one to take a night off either.

There’s always that little obsession you never bother to write on here…now isn’t it?

Her hand grabbed at the top book in a short tower of volumes and flipped to the section filled with post-it markers and a yellow legal pad organized by the ink of different colored pens. The heading read: Prophesy Hunting.

The first stage of this prophesy has been met
, her handwriting flowed over the paper. That was true if she could rely on her ancient Sumerian for anything…and she could, along with any of the five other languages of which she was thoroughly versed.

What had started as superlative research had become an occultist’s hobby. She designed an extensive star charting programs that allowed her to compare portents of evil with their associated planet alignments. While it was never an absolute science and often many of the prophesies were written by egotistical seers and insane persons, it was still valid work.
After all, it would only take one to change everything.

She glanced back to her laptop and opened the star charts.
Two weeks until stage two…I just have to find the nexus point for the energy faster this time.

Knowing the answers were unsearchable without the pictures from the ritual, Willow approached the bathroom, an impressively large room of stunning green marble, and washed in a large shower shaped of curved glass blocks. After a full round of hygiene, she wandered the rooms collecting a few scattered garments.

The top floor of her office building functioned as her apartment and it was styled for necessity and occasional comforts…there were very few wall hangings or ornamental antique furniture about.A leather couch, two end tables with lamps, and an overstuffed recliner filled the living room. Her giant bed, a nightstand, and a rolltop desk decorated the bedroom. The domicile had the feel of a faint acquaintance.Between the lab on the first floor and the massive library/archive on the second floor, she spent little time there.

“Harris1 and unknown subject currently in lobby.Proceed with auto-unlock?” Cerulean inquired, detecting the room Willow was currently in and sending the request on the speaker system that was integrated into all the rooms of the complex.

He doesn’t bring visitors…he knows better.
She returned to her room to look at the surveillance camera.Xander was obscuring the shorter person until he suddenly leaned forward and pressed the intercom button. Then she knew who it was.She didn’t need to zoom into the image of that figure. But she did.She didn’t need to get closer to the projection screen. But she did.And she didn’t need to take a shuddering breath. But she did that too.

“Boss? Are you there?” Xander’s voice cut through her silent internal discord. The moment was over and she had her usual focus.Willow ignored his plea ordering, “Cerulean initiate auto-unlock…create subordinate profile Maclay1 for unknown subject.”
---------------------------------------------------

After receiving an ‘affirmative’, she accessed the intercom and spoke to the duo.“Proceed.”

The voice was clipped but Tara would’ve recognized it in the loudest scream or the softest whisper.Heavily tinted glass doors glided open with a tiny woosh, revealing a lobby that fell right out of some futuristic movie.

“Welcome to the white room,” Xander said with a shrug. It was a pretty exacting term. The ceiling, walls, and floor were a pristine white that created an eerie, antiseptic appearance to the greeting room.It was furnished with only a large shiny black reception desk and chair.

“So I’m thinking where’s the wall padding and my straitjacket?” Tara asked, almost amused that the unusual atmosphere had lowered her anxiety gauge a couple of ticks.

“This is no room for bondage.” Xander smirked at his own statement.“Wait…There’s always room for bondage.”

“Like Jell-O?” A beat passed and two twentysomethings broke into soft chuckle.

The third twentysomething privy to this scene watched much like an advanced processor created for her high-tech fortress. She computed each movement of her eyes, hands, lips, and body; arranging them in the proper sequence of events. She recorded every word…every syllable…every inflection that was spoken. Then the blonde laughed and corrupted the whole damn system. That brief expression of glee replaced every sight and sound she had just witnessed.Or had ever witnessed.Willow moved away from the screen, finding her threshold for pain had been met.

“Cerulean…initiate Query1,” the redhead spoke as she poured a cup of coffee from a lukewarm pot on the stove.A low chime was heard as the system spoke to the pair downstairs.

“Please state the nature of your business.”

“We’ve got visuals from 1530 Peterson. You want it in your office?” Xander asked as he attempted and failed to open the locked door.“Guess not,” he muttered.

“All after-hours deliveries can be left on the desk.If further assistance or questions regarding your delivery are required, you will be contacted.”

“What about the book?” Tara asked, expecting at any moment the redhead would beam into the room or something equally science-fictionish.

“All after-hours deliveries can be left on the desk.If further assistance or questions regarding your delivery are required, you will be contacted.”

Xander rolled his eyes at the repeat command.“Oh, yeah…we’ve got some notes on a new player coming to town. We’re going to leave it here too.”

“Um…I can’t just leave this volume here. It’s not mine and it’s sorta rare,” she communicated to the dark haired guy.He twitched his lips back and forth in thought.“Hey boss? Are you there?”

There was a consequential pause, not suspenseful or terribly nerve-wracking, but a moment of silence nonetheless.Willow ultimately pressed the intercom button on her remote and said, “Return tomorrow at noon.”

Xander turned and left the building with Tara following his lead.“Um…Wow?” Confusion didn’t begin to span the continent of Tara-Land.
When does the special episode of This Is Your Twilight Zone Life end?

She had thought a meeting with Willow would actually require…well meeting Willow for one thing.

“Real heartwarming place isn’t it?” Xander asked with a shrug.

very cool, very exciting but kinda short. You have another scheduled for tomorrow right?

So, Willow can't face Tara yet. She seems to be awful lonely too....of course we knew that. How big is this building? It has three floors but does it have a basement or a sub-basement?

This is going to be a very long, very bumpy ride.

Aww.... :spin that whole scene left me feeling sad and icky.... Willow must be soooo lonely.. Its unsettling how, professional she treats Xander and even more unsettling how he just accepts that as the "way it is".... I feel so bad for them... Anyway, I hope things get better soon.. Im curious to know how the meeting at noon is going to go... Tara's got to find a way under Willows tough exterior and help her to find herself again...

more update soon?

ladydameon: Alas the next part is currently in rewrite...sitting behind the other story and my actual work...

Quote:

Hmm...I hadn't really given it actual dimensions but it would be an appropriate size for a small business such as hers (I say small because even though she's big forensic gal...this is Sunnydale not LA). A few employees...good equipment...but in a very space efficient manner. The top-level apartment is sparsely furnished but very spacious. I hadn't actually considered a basement/sub-basement idea...hmm I'll give it some thought.

MissKittys Ball O Yarn: That part was pretty detached and unsettling and I was feelin' it even as I was writing/editing. I can say this much...the meeting at noon will have Willow/Tara in the same room.

Thanks for all the interest...I so appreciate.

Wow, Cyd, that was fantastic. I love when I go away for a couple of days and come back to lots of updated fics, and seeing yours here made me very happy.
Quote:
Is it okay if I make you my official reviewer?
:blush Of course, you know that you've now doomed me to never again saying anything perceptive or possibly even relevant (not that that will shut me up;) ).

I love the description of Willow's office/home, and seeing how she interacts with it. It's fitting that she's surrounded by computers and machinery, since it would appear that she's trying to become an automaton herself. I say try because clearly Tara's laughter broke through to the emotional part of her that she's been suppressing. It was such a powerful moment, and really made my heart go out to Willow. I can already imagine the boatloads of angst that are in store when the facade really begins to crumble.

I also thought the description of her special project was interesting, that it went from "superlative research" to "an occultist’s hobby" and not the other way around. Is this how she sees what she's doing? Coz in that case, what she sees as a hobby may actually be an obsession to avoid dealing with her life/past/etc.

Anyhoo, enough of my babble, I just can't wait to find out more. *gets comfy in chair to wait for (most likely) painfully awkward meeting of W/T*

it makes me wonder if maybe she wouldve had xander up to give her the stuff if tara hadnt been there. but then she DID make tara a security folder thing...so hmmm. i cant wait to see what happens when tara and xander actually go back and meet her in person. very good update!

Hey folks...thanks for all the early encouragement... I expect to have the update today. It's not the W/T meeting scene yet...feel free to jeer and flog. That part is nearly done and I may put a rush edit on it to appease.

tarawhipped: I so did not doom you for worthy commentary. You want to know how I can tell? When you say things like this:

Quote:
It's fitting that she's surrounded by computers and machinery, since it would appear that she's trying to become an automaton herself.

Couldn't have said it better myself. You also noticed this:

Quote:
I also thought the description of her special project was interesting, that it went from "superlative research" to "an occultist’s hobby" and not the other way around.

It was an intentional word order and hmmm...wonder if it means something :hmm

alysagoddess85: I'm glad her 'fortress' description fits in with the personality...sterile, very off-putting, etc.

Quote:
it makes me wonder if maybe she wouldve had xander up to give her the stuff if tara hadnt been there. but then she DID make tara a security folder thing

I don't think she would've necessarily met with him but there probably would've been more interaction if it were just Xander. The file identification thing is just another way she distances herself (seems I'm really bashing the heck out of that idea...oh well). She uses last names and treats them like employees/associates instead of friends and lovers.

Part 4

Postby hermitfish » Wed Oct 20, 2004 1:19 pm

Next part as promised....

PART 4

Oz resembled every bit of the person Willow had described so long ago…even tempered, nonchalant, intelligent…and all he was doing was internally pondering on the couch.Five minutes after the group arrived back from the peculiar but apparently average Willow meeting, the Scoobies had parted company.

Buffy had insisted on patrolling now that the emergency was over – after all her vampire quota was low for the night. She adamantly insisted that Tara spend the night…and the blonde in slayer mode was not a person to be easily refused.

Unfortunately, Tara wasn’t nearly as drained or jet lagged as she thought she would after a day like today. The only other sentient occupant of the house was the man with the curse of a werewolf… the one she sat uncomfortably across from.Their combined silent tendencies made for a public speaking contest, without the public or the speaking.

“Hmmm…Drink?”

“Water please,” Tara replied.

Oz returned with the appropriated beverages and Tara began downing the water in exacting sips.
Okay…neutral topic…neutral topic
…”You two never got back together?” Tara finally blurted.
Crap…neutral my ass.

“Just friends.”It wasn’t spoken bitterly, just honestly.“When it came down to it, she knew what she wanted…”

Oz spent the morning in Willow’s dorm room, catching up on lost sleep. After a brief afternoon trip to reenroll in classes, he returned to napping, not waking until nearly sundown when he smelled Willow enter the room.

They spent the first ten minutes talking about random topics and off color commentary.Oz knew something was wrong by minute fourteen when Willow began speaking in a way reminiscent of an airplane circling the sky over the airport but never getting to the place it needed to land.

“What is it?” he finally asked, taking the direct approach.

“This is wrong…this is so wrong. How can I sit here and talk about school and witchcraft and probability laws and then have to tell you that I cant be with you that way anymore.I’m a horrible, horrible person.”

“Back up a minute…you cant be with me?” The words came out scratchy as if it hurt his throat just to speak them.

“I’m in love with someone else.”When the words left her mouth, a small weight extracted itself from her shoulders

“But Xander said no new guy.”A mere second passed and every instinct he had, human or otherwise, filled in the missing details. The blonde girl?”

Willow nodded.“Tara.”Just her name lit up the redhead’s face.“And I don’t want to hurt you…but I can’t live a lie.”Tears formed of their own volition and cascaded haphazardly down her face.

“There’ll always be a place in my life for you, Oz.It’s just that Tara owns my heart and nothing in this world can make me take it back from her.I’m sorry.”

The redhead approached tentatively and closed her arms around Oz.The only sound in the room was the low murmur of ‘I’m sorry’ and she hugged her ex-lover for the last time.

“And then?” she eked out the words, her mind yelling
‘fool’
and
‘coward’
even as she gripped her hands together in her lap to keep them from shaking.
You will not cry
, her mind ordered.
You are not allowed to cry.

“She was pretty quiet.” It was a short statement, but it was enough. That was not a word that followed Willow around. It was a word that lived in some far off prefecture from the redhead. She was the one that put on a brave face…strived to make everyone around her comfortable, happy.Tara almost shook her head.
Willow should never be quieted.

“She looked for you but…”

I know how to run.I know how to hide. How long Willow? How long did you search? How many sleepless nights? I had so many Willow.Did you have them too?

“When she loaded up on summer and fall classes, we thought she was adjusting. Then we realized she tripled her courseload.”

Was it too much or not enough? But I know how you like to learn.Did you learn how to forget? I never did.

“She still helped though,” Buffy piped up as she opened the hall closet and stored her jacket.“She was…is really busy but she still helps.”

Tara felt her underlying sentiment.
She’s not gonna let us talk bad about her…she’s gonna keep on defending you.Do you know that Willow…how much these people will always love you?

“We lost her physical presence at some point. When we tried to include her in a night of Bronzing or a movie she could never be there. We…I tried to talk to her, reach out, but it was never good enough.I had waited too long.”

“Buffy, you did your best,” Tara replied.

“How do you know?”

“You always do,” Oz responded, reentering the conversation in his usual sage like way.Buffy faintly gave a sad sort of smile before excusing herself to get a ‘slay night snack’.

Tara excused herself as well, relocating to the basement for the night. It wasn’t the Ritz but it had a surprisingly comfortable fold out bed.She changed her clothes and sat down on the edge of the bed with a sigh. She lifted the cell phone from her bag but found that her hands were shaking again making the little buttons too hard to press. After a few deep breaths she finally put the call through…voicemail picked up the line just as she expected.

“Hey…it’s me.Just calling to say I got in.I’m staying at Buffy’s house and I’ll see you tomorrow I guess.”

She closed the phone and curled into a tight ball on the mattress.

---------------------------------------------------------

Tara woke to the sounds of fight.A quarrel of the Summers’ sister variety…full of verbal accusations and no actual physical violence. For the sake of privacy, the blonde tried very hard to ignore the lack of domestic bliss. She went through her yoga postures and was about to begin meditation when she heard her name shouted. In a question that sounded an awful lot like ‘Why in the hell did you let Tara stay here?’

She stood from the exercise mats on the floor of the slayer’s basement with a sigh and began rummaging through her worn brown rucksack for a clean outfit.Discarding her nightwear in favor of yellow haltertop, olive cargo pants, and her custom black army boots, she trudged up the staircase into the kitchen.

“You should have asked me, Buffy. It’s my house too and …” The words murmured to a hush when Tara closed the basement door.

“By all means keep going…I just want a doughnut and I’ll get out of your way.” Tara grabbed a chocolate frosted concoction from the box and ate quickly.

“What in the hell gives you the right to come back here and interfere?Haven’t you taken enough away from us?” Dawn stomped out of the room boiling.A rage that had been sealed for so long finally surfaced and directed itself at a woman she’d never met.

Tara followed the youngster, carefully choosing her words.“The last thing I ever meant to do was hurt anyone. But I did…I hurt Willow and I can’t change that.I can beg her for forgiveness…I can leave and try to forget.” Dawn looked up at the witch and they locked eyes intently.“You’ll never understand how much I want to change what I’ve done.”

“We all make choices…right or wrong…good or bad.I made a choice to return here and help fight the evil. That’s what I do.That’s who I am.”

The witch hesitated, not wanting her next statement to come out callous.“I don’t know about her life now but I do know that Willow’s made choices in the last three years that are not my fault.”She didn’t know if her heart would ever believe what her mind had readily said.

Her eyes spoke the last necessary thought –
‘she left your life and I didn’t force her to’.

The brunette turned to gaze out the bay window; her gears had changed from fury to a contemplative silence. It had been easy to settle all the blame on some mysterious girl who had ripped the heart out of the redhead like a demon.Yet this demon was plaintive, a misguided creature in some universal folly.Neither totally at fault or totally blameless. It wasn’t the way it was supposed to be.Nothing was the way it was supposed to be.

With no response immediately forthcoming, Tara responded, “I can get a hotel and get out of your way.”

“No…stay.I’ll go to Janice’s.If there’s trouble coming I want Buffy to have all the backup she can.” Dawn headed upstairs to make the call and pack.

“Welcome to Hurricane Dawn.Be advised of high winds and potential destructive capabilities. Please remember to duck and cover for your safety.”Buffy mockingly warned as she returned to her breakfast of the fried dough ring persuasion.

“I d-didn’t mean to…” Tara blew out a deep breath in frustration.“I don’t want to come between your gang.”

“A gang? Please…we could barely make initiation in the Get Along Gang.”Seeing not an inch of ‘turn the frown upside down’ movement, Buffy hastily added, “Most people who come to Sunnydale looking for me don’t want to send me chocolates and kisses. They want me dead.I’d be glad to work with one who doesn’t fall into that category.”

“Thanks,” Tara replied with a grace of sincerity. She disrupted the moment by adding, “I could get you chocolates but don’t bet the funny farm on the kissing bit.”

“Now I’m hurt.I’m not cute enough for ya?” A pout and a bat of her hazel eyes followed.

“Plenty cute.I’m just put off by the slayer breath,” the witch pinched her nose and batted her eyes back evenly. The two girls broke into a short fit of tension releasing laughter. On the edge of that chuckle came the realization that, as of this moment, she was more of a friend to Willow’s best friend than Willow. And when her heart contracted painfully on that beat, she tried not to wince.

This fic looks promising, has me hooked already.

The idea of Tara leaving in the middle of NMR it's something that for all I know no one has ever written, and the way you're doing it with Willow distancing herself from the others, having her own company and having them working for her without having real contact, except for Xander, and Tara coming back as some kind of experienced witch/fighter has a lot going on already, that without mentioning the fact that Oz is still in the picture; so I really wanna know how this is gonna play out.

More soon?

Re: Part 4

Postby tarawhipped » Thu Oct 21, 2004 6:03 pm

That was a really unexpected update, but in a very satisfying way. The abundance of emotions (even the quiet and unspoken ones) contrasted so sharply with the previous chapter. The image of Tara and Oz sitting in uncomfortable silence was very vivid, and I liked the interaction between them. It was so bittersweet to see a glimpse of Willow before she had her heart ripped out, and even though it went unwritten, I felt so sad imagining Willow going to tell Tara she'd left Oz, and finding her room empty...:sob

I have to keep remembering that this Tara never got the chance to know any of the Scoobies, hence the hostility of Buffy & Dawn. But I like that she's dealing with each, and her confidence and strength from those three years away is such a difference from the shy girl who had trouble making eye contact with them on the show. It kinda threw me when she called Dawn out for her bullshit, but then I was like 'woo-hoo, tell her Tara.' I really can't wait now for the W/T reunion. Angsty, I'm sure, but I love the way you write everyone---they're so very different, but you make the changes absolutely believable, and deep down they are the same characters we all know. Awesome, Cyd!

Hello...good morning...This next part (the W/T reunion of sorts) was all ready to go two days ago and I came home after lecture to post but was delayed when my monitor snap, crackled and popped in an impressive display of sparks. Now I'm back online and part 5 will be up today.

Egnalos: I wanted to try a story that went somewhere original. That starting point was the one that screamed the loudest in my head. I'm happy you like so far.

tarawhipped: Yay Cameron...reviewer extraordinaire :)

Quote:

Whew...I'm so glad that showed...Tara was rollercoastering through so many emotions (guilt, self-anger, sadness, etc.) that I could barely keep up.

Quote:
I have to keep remembering that this Tara never got the chance to know any of the Scoobies, hence the hostility of Buffy & Dawn.

Buffy was pretty hostile at first meeting but I think finding out the some of the story and realizing that Tara's been in her line of work has tempered her into ally status. Dawn, on the other hand, just misses Willow and rests the blame on Tara's shoulders. I think Tara challenging her gave Dawn something to think about.

Quote:
but I love the way you write everyone---they're so very different, but you make the changes absolutely believable

That's really good to know...I think character believability is one of my biggest worries. Willow and Tara, as much as I love the canon characters, are behaving differently here and I thought that might turn people away.

The mysterious caller is coming to an update near you...really answers your question doesn't it? :P

behindhereyes Welcome...Thanks for the kind words.

I thought there was some uncomfortableness between them but also a deep sense of understanding. They both understand what it means to love and be loved by Willow. While I don't think its possible for them to be extremely close, I think they can maintain a friendly respect for each other.
